Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News Talks EDB All Sport Breakfast All Star Panel.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Yes, all Star panel featuring two commentary stars involved in
coverage of the doubleheader at Sky Stadium today. Firstly calling
the Black Ferns Wall Aruz test for Sky. Great chat
to Ricky sward elkad Ricky good Adam, how are you
very good? Thanks lovely to hear your voice. And Ross
bond part of our News Talks dB commentary team for
the All Blacks match at seven tonight. Bondie morning to.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
You, good morning team, how are we very well?
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Right, Let's get into it. Bondie will start with you.
We'll go All Blacks France first. In light of the
injury news during the week and light of what you
saw under the roof and Dunedin last weekend, where does
this All Blacks team sit and what do they want
to get out of Test two tonight?
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Do you think I think it was just a typical
first start performance, a little bit rusty in some areas.
We're looking to improve, I guess execution and finishing tonight.
I can tell you that as I'm sort of looking
out down on Sky Stadium. There's a horrific shower coming
across the city at the moment, so the forecast it
(01:19):
is meant to sort of disappear, so it'll be a
little bit slippy on top. I guess that this underneath
the stadium will always be good surface. I just think
they'll aid the combinations or clicking a little bit better tonight.
It wasn't a performance that worried me substantially, and I
thought the French boys actually turned up and played pretty well.
So I think execution and just combinations tonight will be
(01:42):
a lot better for the boys in Black.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Yeah, Ricky depth being tested a little bit, I guess
in the leadership ranks, and also a couple of positions
such as wing. Anything that concerns you ahead of tonight
or are you confident that the jitters of last week
will be overcome?
Speaker 4 (01:56):
Yeah, I'm probably a little bit with Bondie, although having
also just looked out the window in my hotel and
welfare with my walking shoes about to go on as well,
is it going to be a factor tonight as well? Look,
I actually really enjoyed watching that test last week, and
I think we've kind of managed to in the aftermath,
and that Rebracutton's kind of sucked the life out of
(02:17):
the really good bits as well, and there was it
was a really fun test to watch. I'm really looking
forward to seeing him on the Nadawa play. I know
it's unfortunate for Caleb Clark, but for me, that was
probably my one surprise in the wider squad selection is
that there was no room for either of the chief swingers,
Nadawa or Leroy Carter, who I thought had been excellent
all season. So I know Nadawa was obviously there an
(02:39):
injury cover, so I'm actually really looking forward to seeing
him get his opportunity. Might not necessarily be a knight
for the wingers, but he's a sort of player that
gets busy, gets involved, which you always like to see
for the guys out wide. So yeah, look, leadership, there's
plenty of that. You know, you louse Scott Barrett, Yes,
but Patrick Sweeplos, who was the Blues captain Voden Barrett's
(02:59):
paid one hundred and thirty thousand tests, so many it
is now, so the leadership side doesn't necessarily worry. I mean,
these are all guys who are senior world class internationals.
You naturally become leaders by doing that. But yeah, it's
probably a bit the same. You want to see things
tidied up. And if you're the French, you came here
having heard nothing but that you're disrespectful, that you're the
(03:20):
C team, the B team, the D team, whatever it is,
you're always going to go out like that. Last week.
Those guys have got absolutely nothing to lose, Nobody expected
anything from them, and they're playing for long term positions
as well. So I felt like we were probably in
the lead up did a little bit of a service
to the French and their attitudes and they're kind of
proditional standards a wee bit.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
Yeah, and body, isn't it funny that, you know, a
few weeks ago it was so easy for people to
write off the series, call it a waste of time.
But last week, as Ricky mentioned, it was an entertaining test,
a great spectacle. And we've got you know, three sold
out tests now as part of this tour, and I
think a lot of eyes will be on this one
that may not have been seven days ago.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
Yeah, look, I agree, And look, the French boys always
come to play, don't they. And you know, the street
side tonight for of the boys that were top tabletopp
and the Tulusians will be back in this team tonight.
They'll come out and as Ricky said, they've got nothing
to lose, they'll put it to the abs tonight. Interesting
we had William Savat at our training on Thursday night
(04:19):
local Rugby Club where he came along and had a
lot him and Dane toles I had. They were there
working with our howkers, which was a pretty special moment
for our boys. Savata course three hundred and fifteen games
were to lose fifty for the French side of the
current French forward coach and lot. He was pretty relaxed
about how they had gone. He said, we'll give it
a real crack tonight and they will and look disrespect
(04:41):
the French at your peril as we've seen over the years.
So I'm looking forward tonight. I think it's going to
be a cracker. But I do think the boys in
Black will be a lot better and we'll probably pull
away in this one all right.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
And before then, Rocky four thirty black Ferns as they
get so close to this Rugby World Cup. Now I
have this huge test against Australia selections on the line,
obviously wanting to finish there a couple of months of
home tests on a high. This is pretty important one
of them as well, both for individual players at a team.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
Absolutely, God, it's crazy to think that it's you know,
five or so weeks until the next World Cup. Obviously
a short cycle, a short four year cycle became a
three year cycle this time around, and all of a
sudden it's here. So yeah, a few changes this afternoon
for the Black Ferns with some injuries, none of which
I gather are serious. They're more just being very very
careful or at this time with a handful of players
(05:31):
Acalettiinga being one of those. I had actually had a
chat here on cheese asass just a little hammy niggle.
So there's a couple of those kind of things in there.
But yeah, look, you want to see a performance from
the Black Ferns. My feeling is there's only one or
two places is that even still up for grabs. It
may come down to just where some of the where
things around, injuries or any niggles in terms of selections,
(05:54):
So you now want it to be performance. You want
to see the things that have kind of been worked
on the last six, eight, ten weeks to start to
come to the four against an Australian team that is
again and I was turning into one of their places there.
They know that there is a gap between them and
the top four at this stage, it's quite significant, so
they're going to want to close that a little bit
(06:14):
and show that it's closed. So from the Black Black
fans perspective, that org as well. For my we're talking
this afternoon, isn't it'll be right exactly? You want to
see a really strong performance from them this afternoon.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
Yeah, great, and BONDI just from a selector's point of view,
the net has been cast wide for the Black fans
this year. They've had some wider training squads, a lot
of people in and out of the environment. You know
for some of those final few spots. How much would
it for you come down to a performance in one
game like this or do you sort of look back
on the year as a whole of what people have
contributed to a squad.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
Yeah. Look, unless unless it's a superstar performance, and I
think probably that almost the ink will be will be
dry on the pad. Bunting will have his ideas. Yeah,
they've cast in it white as you said, and look,
I've been impressive the a super Rugio pre I thought
that was some outstanding performances through there. I think he's
(07:12):
got the best crop here and lor he'll know unless
unless something super sonic happens this afternoon. And as Ricky said,
there is a huge gap between the fans and the woolaroos.
So now I think he's pretty much good his team
on paper. All right, I've got I.
Speaker 4 (07:27):
Think on nexcept so sorry, just quickly. Look, there's probably
two players and they'd be the ones i'd watch for
coming off the bench today, and that's Kelly Brazier and
Laura Bayfield, who will make your debut. They really like Bayfield.
She offers a lot, but is it just the makeup
of that squad? Is their room for her to come
in at the slate stage?
Speaker 2 (07:43):
Yeah, it will be interesting. All right, we'll watch with
interestal quick break here on the All Star panel where
with Ricky Swinell and Ross Bonds back after this and
the All Sport Breakfast. It is the All Star Panel.
We have been talking lots of rugby, so time for
one final topic that I do want to get Ricky
and Bondi's thoughts on and that is a story that
came out during the week after the fourth place the
Junior Tall Blacks had at the Basketball Under nineteen World's Cup.
(08:05):
Turns out that every player had to fork out five
grands to be part of it. And Ricky, we know
that age group national sport. This has long been you
know what's had to happen. Do you think Basketball New
Zealand have the chance and the provision to maybe reduce
the barriers that are prevented by the financial kind of
ways this team has possibly been selected.
Speaker 4 (08:26):
Yeah, it's tough, isn't it. I mean every sports organization
everywhere around the world is trying to do more with less.
There are more tournaments, there are more teams, and bond
you will know. You know, at club level it's exactly
the same that pie is getting thinner and the money
isn't necessarily getting bigger. We all hear how tight things
(08:49):
are in everyday life.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
At the moment.
Speaker 4 (08:51):
So if your Basketball New Zealand And, it's probably obviously
the success that team had has put this into the spotlight. Unfortunately,
it has been the reality of junior sport of club
sport for far too long, for a long long time.
So yeah, has your basketball New Zealand. Look, you've got
to try and we're obviously using them as the example.
(09:12):
You've got to try and find a way because what
of the kids who just simply can't afford that, who
might have missed out on this team because they just
simply couldn't afford that, and finding other ways. But I mean,
BONDI you're sort of at the coal facer club sport
a little bit more than I am, and just how
challenging it is of an environment to find funds for
everything that needs to be done.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Yeah, I mean, I think Reckon hit it straight on
the head there. It's bloody tough out there, and I
guess the key thing is that if you're going to
into these teams into that and then you've really got to,
I guess try and help fund them. I mean, our
platsops are currently at the World Cup, doing really well
on the world stage. The guys had to fund themselves.
(09:54):
A part of their funding had to be from their
own pockets. We've seen the New Zealand men's volleyball teams
just been at the World they had to fund themselves.
So everyone's everyone's hurting, and yeah, it's a tough one,
but I guess it's just the reality of the modern
day will and at club level it's bloody tough. And
then you've got guys that are missing training, missing games
(10:14):
because they've got to work these days. So it's just
the reality of the modern world we're in. I guess.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
Indeez, all right, guys, got to leave it there, but
great to catch up with. Both of you. Have great
calls tonight for the respective games you're covering. Ricky Swell
from SkyTV, Ross bond out a News Talk zedb's commentary
team for the All Blacks test tonight.
