The Auckland Tuatara will begin their fourth season competing in the Sal’s NBL on Saturday night when they host the Franklin Bulls at Eventfinda Stadium.

Their fourth attempt comes with some significant change for the organisation, who have appointed just their second coach in history in the form of ex-player Cam Gliddon and a brand-new management line-up to support him.

Big man Tom Vodanovich caught up with D'Arcy Waldegrave to preview their season opener.

Tip off is at 7.30pm.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk SEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Right, it's good Tom, now, good morning Tom.

Speaker 3 (00:14):
Here you go mate, thanks for having me.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Going very very well. Well, it all goes from now
the season, what it cracked off did and on Thursday
when the defending champions got rolled by Podlanger. That's another
story though. We're interested in what you're up to tonight.
It's kind of this trans Auckland camp, isn't it. Franklin
balls up against the to a Tata. A lot of
feeling in that, I'd say, Tom.

Speaker 4 (00:35):
Yeah, man, I mean just you know, getting back and
getting into it. Obviously a good big game they've seen
to schedule all the big Cross rival games in the
first round bring some excitement, so it should be good.
I think we'll have a good, good crowd there and
be worth a watch.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
So pre season, you haven't been up to a great deal,
haven't You haven't even been there?

Speaker 4 (00:53):
No, No, these boys have been working much harder than
me in this uniform.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (00:56):
I just got back recently from Melbourne. But they've had
a blitz tournament down in the West Coast, the beautiful
West Coast where you know, give him a chance to
get together and have that experience on the road and
test a few things out.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
So but now I've been here a couple of days
now and into the thick.

Speaker 4 (01:13):
Of it already, and you know, learning the plays off
at imports is always an interesting way to go about it,
but we're getting it done.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
You've got to get used to that the basketballs because
you do flick around various leagues, countries and the like
all the time. So to be able to climb in
and understand what goes on right from the get goes probably,
I suppose it's quite key. And the way you play
your game, Tom.

Speaker 4 (01:32):
Yeah, I guess you've got to be a bit of
a quick learner sometimes. But yeah, I'm pretty lucky with
these guys. Obviously, having Cam Glidden as our coach and
next player, he understands the moving and transitioning of things
between teams, so he's yeah, been pretty good and helping
me get into it quick and keeping it simple at
the start.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
So I'm sure.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
Yeah, we've still got more players to come in and
I'll be the one having to help them get through it.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
So it's just one of those things in basketball.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
It's a strange i'd start, isn't it not Every team
is hitting the ground running with a full roster, and
we all know it's going on with that Indian important
team and that hasn't worked out particularly well. Is the
players that they've got. There's a number of teams that
still haven't got there, Phil Ross's I think even their
Rams haven't got a handful their imports. It's quite common.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
Yeah, I mean I think this year the New Zealand
League just sort of decided to start a bit earlier
with the feeble windows and other things that go on,
so meant that the Australian NBA and New Zealand League
sort of clashed a bit more.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Obviously, I guess.

Speaker 4 (02:24):
It meant that Indian league that they ran over there
clashed a bit too, so they couldn't put a team
together early, which is a bit sad and disappointing, but
it is what it is in this sport.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
Tell me about what you guys are hoping to put
on the floor. What's Cam Glyndon, who I might add
as an absolute GC, I love talking to him. What's
this general faery so fast out of a season? What
does he want to achieve first and foremost.

Speaker 4 (02:45):
Man, I think he's just, first of all, just trying
to get everyone really confident, you know, especially at this
time of the year. You've got a lot of young
dudes and fresh faces, and just making sure that everyone
knows that they're here for a reason and out there
and be confident. But man, we're just trying to work hard.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
A lot of threes, as Cam used to. That's pretty
much all he did.

Speaker 4 (03:01):
I'm surprised to get any other players, but no, it's
a wide variety of things going on at the moment.
But I know the boys out south will be listening in,
so I'm not going to divulge too much.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Nice to think they were. Nice to know that you
think they're all listening. This is fantastic, Harlight, all of
Franklin Ball. Thanks very much for listening in. Well you
can make it nice and simple though, right, score, dominate
the boards, get stops, we go. That's it, all right?

Speaker 3 (03:25):
What you should have cams?

Speaker 2 (03:27):
I can't shoot threes, it's not going to happen.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
Hey with your teammates.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
City haven't got everyone there, but anyone in particular we
should look out for.

Speaker 4 (03:37):
Yeah, we've got two great imports, you know, awesome people.
But man, I've had you know, one full training with
them and just finished to work out with them now
and that man, they can go.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
So Boy and.

Speaker 4 (03:45):
Chuck would definitely be worth watching, you know, some high
flying and long range shots. But man, I think a
lot of our roster, a lot of young guys who
are coming through who are definitely worth a watch. Do
Wilkie for the rapidly he'll be solid.

Speaker 3 (03:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (03:59):
We just got a good group that I think, and
when it all comes together and you know it'll it'll
be quite an exciting team.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
What can you bring from the Southeast Melbourne Phoenix anything
in particular?

Speaker 3 (04:09):
Now, I'm just going to keep bringing what I always
try to bring.

Speaker 4 (04:11):
Man, it's a bit of a leadership trying to hit
some open shots and a bit of a bruiser out there.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
Hopefully the rest allowed it to play this year. We'll
see what happens.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
Right, So you just bring exactly who you are and
nothing's ever changed. You're a big body who likes to tussle.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
Well, yeah, do what I can then as much as
I'm allowed.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
And same the same attitude as well. You just like
I love the way you play the game and the
way you talk. As well. It's super casual, but a
little more intense on the floor itself. But you roll
through this, don't you.

Speaker 4 (04:41):
Tom oh Man, I think it feels like I've been
around longer than I probably have. But yeah, man, there's
no point trying to change and be anyone different, right,
So yeah, I'll just hopefully bring what I can to
the team and hopefully help some young guys, you know,
find a find a little bit of a leader in
me somewhere, and hopefully we can help everyrun out.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
A lot of a leader. Tom, A good man, thanks
