Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Wildgrave from News Talk SEDB.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Tony Johnson is up next as we review preview the
funning games in Super Rugby Pacific and he joins us. Now, Montcy, you,
mister Johnson, I've got a question for you. I don't
know if you can answer it or not. I'm sorry
to throw the seat you like that, but I'm watching
that game last night. I was very, very tired. Did
(00:32):
blackhead to get back on the park again after I
got yellow carded with eleven minutes to go?
Speaker 1 (00:38):
Ah?
Speaker 3 (00:39):
Oh god, you got me there.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
I just I'm watching a game. You're back on the puck.
Shouldn't he be back on again? We need you back
on again with a minute to go?
Speaker 3 (00:48):
Anyway, That's not what I expected to be asked.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Expect the unexpected. Hey, let's look at that game first
up that that was some mighty defensive effort or was
it more of a case of the Hurricanes just not
making the most of opportunity.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
Well think, for quite a while in this game, the
Crusaders played like vintage Crusaders. You know, they were running
the show. But then at the end they kind of
things dropped off, but I think there will be some
concerns about David Haveavily having to leave the field because
he's had an injury plague season and when he really
(01:28):
does marshal that back line extremely well. I just thought
they looked really good through the middle, early stage, middle
stages of the game, but then things went a bit
skew towards the end. They started falling off tackles and
they conceded those yellow cards and suddenly the Hurricans had
had a sniff at it, forcing the game to extra time.
(01:49):
So it was it was a good comeback from the Hurricanes.
It was look it was. It was a really good
contest of the sort that kind of expect from these
two teams. But at the end of the day, we
are It's sort of like a little bit, you know,
a tripp to yesteryear or a very familiar sight of
crusaders on top of the table.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Well, at least you can see the yellow and the
black and red, unlike that. Was it two thousand and five,
and want to say two thousand and six finals during
the week, why would you replay that you can't see anything?
Speaker 3 (02:22):
Well, no, it was just that it was an intriguing moment,
wasn't it. It was a bit of an aberration, but yeah,
why not.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
I've got a text in from one of the lists
of saying black Hatted did get back on again. That's
good to see because I was so focused on what
was going on.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
Game.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
No, they're going to lose. And I think the big
thing around this, and this is what black hat a
scene has said to me once a couple of years ago.
The key in winning these games is discipline, and that
discipline lagged in the end of that and that's what
worried me. I'm sure that's what worries Rob Penny too.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Well. Yeah, I mean it'll be something they'll talk about
greatly during the week, I'm sure. But the fact that
is that at the end they still won the game.
And as well, Jordan said, at the end of the game,
you know right now, in games like that, all points
is you know what matters most, and we saw in
the game that followed. You don't get that four points,
you know you're going to suffer for it. Because I
(03:14):
think that is the beauty of this competition that if
you don't bring your a game every week, then you're
going to stub your toe on matches, and I think
just to come away from the capital with the four points,
even though things got a bit shaky at the end,
that's all that's going to matter to them. Of course,
the other standout feature of the game Scott Barrett suddenly
(03:36):
right back to being the Scott Barrett. We know there
was some discussion about him, which outwardly he took on
the chin, but you know, inwardly may just have been
fuming about a little bit. Whatever the reason, brought the
best out of him. And that was a very encouraging
sign too to see him, you know, smashing into gaps,
(03:59):
you know, tackling hard, winning turnover ball at lineouts. You know,
he had a standout performance in that game, just at
a time where people were starting to question what sort
of shape is he.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
In Foreman class? We know that argument. Hey, let's talk
a wee bit about that. You mentioned the game the
Chiefs got beaten by the Waratars. As was written in
the Herald, the war Tars are as home and away,
as elf, Stuart, they can't went away, but gee at
home they're almost impossible to touch up.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
Well, I didn't expect this, because they came back. I
thought they would come back, you know, tail between the legs,
licking their wounds and probably shorter confidence. But they made
a great start and they did a couple of things. Firstly,
even though they had tries just allowed, and no question
that the Chiefs, you know, they had a bit of
(04:47):
fortune on their hands there. I think if Morgan Tylor
and nuw he had been the TMO, the Warritars probably
would have put about forty points on the board. But
not to be Morgs yeah, looking good man. I'm not
criticizing it. I just think he felt that the Wartars
had been a bit short change there. But the other
thing they did was they really had a crack at
Damien McKenzie early on. They got a good couple of
(05:09):
shots on him and it did seem to throw him
off his game. And it was just one of those
nights where the worst it got, the worse it got
for him. You know, he was shelling passes, you know,
dropping balls, throwing wayward pass it. That's a game that
you know he will need to flush pretty quickly and
get it out of his system because it wasn't a
(05:32):
great look. And I just wonder whether the whole idea
of you know, taking him from the number ten jersey
where he's been playing really well. Putting it back to
fullback that might have unsettled him a little bit. I
don't know, but I think it was more the fact
that the war Retars really rattled his cage, and I
think probably the big disappointment about that was that he
(05:52):
wasn't able to recover from it, and in the end
that forced the Chiefs to go to their forwards and
that's when the war Retars, their defense stood up. Their
tackling success was outstanding. Up ninety. The Chiefs carried the
ball a lot, but they really what they were not
(06:12):
making a lot of meters from from their carries, and
of course the Chiefs, you know, dropping the ball on
the line next thing the try of the season you'd
have to say down the other end of the field
from Teddy Wilson finishing off a magnificent move. I think
the other thing to the confidence that they had and
the confidence when they were able to get Sue Letty
(06:35):
into the game. It was powerball and you can see
there what they are so excited about having this guy
in the rugby union ranks, because you know, he was
a class act and he as I say, He just
gives them so much confidence and their ability to attack. You.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
For Joey Martin to start playing for the Blues another
story just quickly he may. Let's wrap it up with
a we prediction of the so afternoon. Can Moan and
Pasivika carry on their upsetting ways over the big brother
Auckland from over the road?
Speaker 3 (07:03):
Well, three wins in a row. I think it's only
been done by four teams this year. It's really hard
to get a winning stretch going, but I think they'll
fancy their chances, especially on their second half performance. They
are a tremendous second half team and that's where the
Blues have tended to fall away. Bottom line is, mate,
what we've got here is an actual derby. This is
a genuine real derby. Derbys are played between teams based
(07:27):
in the same city and there's a great deal of
excitement about this. It's again, it's another absolute must win
game for the Blues. They are just clinging on to
their hopes of getting in the top six. They can't
afford another one. Whereas the Mina know now that if
they can get another couple of wins on the board
and build a winning run, then they are right in
(07:47):
the frame, so it should be exciting. I'm really looking
forward to it.
