Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News Talk SEDB.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
We're talking with Troy Johnson. Now he's the captain of
New Zealand Prime Ministers eleven who take on England today
in Queenstown. Troy, what a wonderful time to be playing cricket.
Interesting game this one, and welcome to the show.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
Thank you for having me.
Speaker 4 (00:27):
Yeah, yeah, it's obviously very cool opportunity for us, slightly
probably different teams to what a lot of us are
used to.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Obviously a bit of.
Speaker 4 (00:35):
A mix of people from all over the country. But yeah,
very exciting times and anytime you get to come down
and playing in Queenstown it's always a good one.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
So what's the point of the Prime Minister's eleven. I
think it was originally the New Zealand And eleven but now
it's the Prime Ministers eleven are to take on England.
Have only got two days? What needs to be achieved
out of this?
Speaker 4 (00:56):
Yeah, I think obviously it's an amazing opportunity for us.
I'm sure the English hearer have their own things they
want to get out of it, but I think certainly
for for us it's an awesome opportunity to play some
real class cricketers. We've got a bit of a mix
of contracted domestic cricketers and a bunch of young lads
who are I guess aspiring to that, and certainly from
(01:17):
what I've seen of the group there, they're certainly knocking
on the door.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
So I mean it's amazing opportunity for us really.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
You know, any time you get to face an international
bowling lineup or bowl against the quality about as they
have as yeah, it's going to be very exciting and
something I know we're certainly all looking forward to.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
How strong is the team that England are going to field?
Is it a handy HOUNDI or just a few? Do
you know much about who they're going to line up
in this game?
Speaker 4 (01:44):
To be honest, man, I have absolutely no idea what
lineup they'll put out, but certainly from you know, it's
obviously been pretty well publicized over the last few years,
the way they're playing, obviously the way Brenda McCullum's gone
and probably changed that team, the way they're playing. I mean, certainly,
as a fan of the game, I've absolutely loved watching
them and watching the way they go about it. So
I think regardless of what team they whatever team they
(02:06):
put out, whether it's a you know, eleven of them
or a mixture of the whole squad, it's it's going
to be a great challenge for us and something I
think we're yeah, we're going to really look forward to
and look forward to seeing the way they play.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
The other captain Troy Johnson, do you fight fire with fire?
Are you going to come at them the same way?
Speaker 3 (02:23):
I think we have to wait and see.
Speaker 4 (02:24):
We might have to keep that one in the locker,
but we've got some outstanding young players who I know
will be very eager to show off their talents. You know,
it's probably a bit of a you know, as nervous
as I'm sure a lot of the boys will be,
it's probably a bit of a pressure free hit out
for a lot of our boys. You know, you're either
I think you have an amazing experience getting to play
one of the best teams in the world, or you
(02:45):
go out there and you have a great day out
and play well and you know you walk away with
runs and wickets against an international team.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
So I think, regardless of what happens, it's going to
be a great few days.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
You're out of the fire birds. See you've got a
couple of your teammates with you as well. So and
you know the cut of the jib of a couple
of your blokes.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
Yeah, we do. We do.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
Got Juicy Teshoff and Yahya zib So. I mean, two
very very good cricketers. Jesse was the New Zealand under
nineteen skipper and played against a bunch of guys who
are now playing international credit.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
So he's certainly he's got the goods, and he's pretty
pretty fresh and pretty raw, and there is a lot
of talent there.
Speaker 4 (03:23):
So I'm really excited to see him steaming in against
a few of their boys. Yeah, he'll certainly fight fire
with fire. So I'm looking forward to seeing him go
about his business mate.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
You fast, you deliver it, the court goes to the boundary.
He is aware of that, isn't he. He is accurate.
He's not one of these guys who just sprays it
flat out all over the park.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
No, No, he's the goods. He's pretty new to it
all in terms of professional cricket, but certainly when you
look at, if I guess the talent he possesses, I'm
really excited to see where he goes in thee the
next few years.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
It's called the Prime Minister's eleven. Did Chris pick the team?
Speaker 4 (03:59):
I'm not sure actually how much of a sway Chris
had on picking the team, But if he, I think
we're all pretty thankful to be here.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
So that was very kind of him.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
Is he going to roll around and take a look.
Is he going to achieve from the sidelines?
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Not sure. Actually, hopefully White's up and comes out. We
could give him a bowl. I don't know if you
want to pow it up, but yeah, hopefully gets the
bar tab after anyway, And as.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Far as the coaching staff, if you are a couple
of old school involved a Graham Aldredge is helping out,
and of course Bob Carter, what's their advice being?
Speaker 3 (04:28):
But I mean there are two there, two of the greats,
aren't they? Those two? Geez? Certainly.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
I mean he's got so much to offer with both
both great heads, and like say, Bob's been around, He's
seen plenty, so they'll do a great job with us.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
So I've got no doubt. And I think just.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
As a learning experience for a lot of us coming
into a new environment, learning off new coaches and learning
off each other as well.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
It's going to be really cool.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
So, I mean, I think regardless of what happens with
the game, I think most of us players will be
better off for having these few days alongside a couple
outstanding coaches.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Are you a fanboy? Youre going to get out there
and get them to sign your bat when you're in
the middle, You.
Speaker 4 (05:04):
Know, I think I'll be too nervous to ask, But
I'm definitely a fan made.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
I'm an absolute cricket nuffy.
Speaker 4 (05:10):
Well, oh yeah, I'm to be honest, man, I'm pretty
just excited to see them play. I will be standing
out in the field admiring a few shots, I have
no doubt, But yeah, I don't know if I'll be
asking for autographs, but I'm very very excited to see
the way they go about it. So it's obviously been
pretty cool watching them the last few years, the way
they play, And yeah, I guess to watch it up
(05:31):
close as is going to be awesome.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
I don't know a cricket that isn't a cricket nothing,
it's part.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
And Parcel, I think it is part of it.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Hey, one last thing, and thanks so much for joining us, Troy,
what do you know about how Sir John Davies OVAL's
deck plays much experienced.
Speaker 4 (05:48):
There as we flew in, that looked pretty green, So
it might be a weave on offer. I'm a better sadly,
so it might be a weave it on offer for
the bowlers. But I mean, you're going to struggle to
find a bitter looking Oval in the world, aren't you.
It's an amazing ground, so I mean, anytime you get
to play down here in Queenstown's was a really enjoyable fixture,
a really enjoyable game. So no it we'll be Yeah,
(06:11):
we'll be really really excited to get out there. But yeah,
the touch is looking pretty green, I think, so we'll
look forward to taking that.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
On represent with pride. And if Ben Stokes cleans you out,
you're not allowed to take a selfie when you're walking off, Okay,
going to keep it good.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
I promise you I won't be doing that mate, I'll
I'll be storming off.
