Confidence from the Crusaders they’ll be able to manage without the services of 64-test Wallaby James O'Connor in tonight's Super Rugby derby against the Highlanders in Dunedin.

Rivez Reihana is coming off the bench, having suffered an ankle injury early in the campaign.

With O'Connor resting, outside back Will Jordan is excited for Reihana to get a run.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Wildergrave from News Talk SEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Height minutes after seven. Say what are we looking around about?
Twelve hours until this game kicks off? It's on Gold
Sports and it is the Crusaders versus the Highlanders.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
Will Jordan joins us.

Speaker 4 (00:23):
Now, good morning, well morning, how are you?

Speaker 3 (00:25):
I'm very well looking forward to the entertainment of a day.
Is the Crusader's head on down to Highlanders Land? And
you're going to get accustomed to playing under a roof
next year. So this is a nice lead into it,
isn't it.

Speaker 4 (00:39):
Yeah. I guess we'll get a bit of a look
at what will happen next year. We've certainly felt the
four conditions of class which on Friday Night against the
Blues last week, So Muke have yeah, confirmed dry conditions
for what it'll be a pretty high octane game on
say you'd think so.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
The general thought pattern coming out of the media US
is that you guys are going to lose a huge
advantage when you're playing under a roof next year, because
you really can win that grind and the cold and
the wet over there. Apollo Projects lean to do. Isn't
there's any traction in that statement, will?

Speaker 4 (01:15):
I mean, yeah, certainly over the years we've really brought
into that type of game around our set piece, our
kicking game. We've had good success to that as well.
I think yeah, as I remember next year, in the
different conditions and certainly our back line, we pretty excited
about the opportunities that are present as well. So yeah, I'm
sure there's a few teams that are looking forward to

(01:36):
coming down here and being a roof of this year,
but obviously yet having us us having the roof will
be huge for the city and I'm sure we'll get
a big crowds and minus next year. So we've been
have a job too before we get that. But like
you say, get a bit of a look at it
this week.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
Mad ass game last week? Is there's a thought process
that says and I supposed to look at the stats
that the Blues actually they played better rugby, they had
the better of all the stats that couldn't get it
done at the end. Did you sit back and reflect.

Speaker 4 (02:04):
On that much yet a little bit like there's some
stuff in the second half around their exits they didn't
quite nail which crossed hundred a bit appreciate and meant that, Yeah,
we wrapped up the tackles and the church she wasn't
really wanted, but at the same time, like there was
a decent night to not have the ball and just
bag your defence. So I know Matt Todd's really plays
in that space. How we're coming along like that defense

(02:26):
was a little bit leaky to start the year, but
the last two or three weeks it started really ramping
to form. And as you get in towards knockout footy
and went to rugby, are your defense will be pretty key.
So we're pretty pleased with how that's sticked up in.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
The discipline of course, always the key in any success,
and you'd be happy enough that the way you applied that.

Speaker 4 (02:46):
Yeah, I think like we made turn in vidiot tackles.
I think it was something around there and only gave
away I think four penalties on defence, maybe seven or
eight in total, So those are pretty good numbers, Like
any time ten and you're doing pretty well. This pibum
is obviously a big thing for us. Come out of
that Hurricanes game. We went down the stair Dean, so

(03:06):
I thought we made some good shifts in that space,
and it's always importantly as soon as you give vipenalty,
you give teams three cracks. I was an advantage Joe.
You're into your five meter in defending mauls, so it's
hugely important that space and be part of that's cussing
and defensive system. I thought we did that well last rider.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
Where do you have to lift you look back at
that go. We don't need a miracle from O'Connor at
the end. We'd rather just get it done well before
the eighties. So where are those areas where you've got
to pull it forward? Considering it you're not going to
be a horrible, horrible weather. He's going to be under
our roof.

Speaker 4 (03:39):
Yeah, I see. I think just the exit stuff like
we showed to getting out of our twenty two a
little bit to put us under pressure. But at the
same time that's just sometimes what's going to take. Like
you know Derby games, the common general has been really tight.
So the way we regrouped after going down three points
of tend to go got great impact from our bench.
He had a good seat. Please plan to apply pressure

(04:00):
there so for away we're able to win that game.
In the last ten minutes through controlling the kicking game
and finding the way the WILM is really great for
our group and in particular our bench coming on feeling that.
So I've been putting again this week should be plenty
of running Raygia in the first fifty, so our bench's
ability to come on left and do it with the
game requires will be really key. And we're not son

(04:22):
hpelled against the Hollanders like they piped us up there
down there last year, and it's all these tight games
against them, so we know it'll be another huge physical
battle when you've got to earn it in the first
fifty or sixty minutes, and ye'll see how the game
falls out from there.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
I see the reward for super sub James O'Connor or
Jock as I believe you call them, is to have
the week off. Isn't that nice?

Speaker 4 (04:46):
Yeah, I'm sure talked about it. I might have known that.
Obviously he's doing a great job for us. Jock playing
incredibly well and great stuff throughout the week in terms
of sitting our team up and also really helping the
young teams out. Taha blade plays are real by product
to that. But at the same time we excided for
of us getting the run. I was probably one of

(05:08):
our better players last year, to be honest, when he
was in the ten jersey and all account did a
great preseason. Fortunately got injured right before round one, so
I said, a little crack against miner and not quite good.
So excited him to get a run and just build
a depth like yet a need three ten debridiars ago
in case injuries strike, and we got full confidence and

(05:28):
Rivers coming in. But yeah, also really stuck with what
Jock's given us over the whole first ten weeks.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
To be fair, do you think Joe Schmidt and the
Wallabees could should pick him?

Speaker 4 (05:38):
Yeah? I mean yeah, I mean it all depends on
how they really would they want to play the game,
and Joe will be all over that. But for me,
I looked at particularly a squad and what he could
bring to that his experience, what he knows about the
Northern Hemisphere game having played over there in particular. We're
really critical and certainly your first five we are starting

(05:59):
or coming off the bench. Having a pretty cool head
I'm understanding what to do in big games was quickly important.
So he's certainly putting his hand up it'd be great
to see him out there. Thing's got fifty five tests,
so you just can't buy that sort of experience, So
you'd have to be in the reckoning I think.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
And finally, as far as the injury toll is concerned,
you've lost a few players, how many of them are
close to getting back on deck again?

Speaker 4 (06:24):
Yeah, I think we've done a little bit bit in
that space. It's here to be fare a little bit. Yeah, Yeah,
we've managed to a bit of kettle out in the park.
But yeah, I think you know, a guy like bradeny
Or was really good in his game againto the Force
unfortunately went down again, but I think after the buy
it looks like he might be back. Don Gardner as well.
So yeah, the guys off the graphs working really hard

(06:47):
to get themselves back into shape. And it's a credit
to our management mist and Hydeo that we're able to
have some great improvements over what's been a bit of
a niggle aspect of the game over the last couple
of years of injuries. So yeah, touch Wooden, Well may
that continue?

Speaker 3 (07:00):
How's Ethan?

Speaker 4 (07:02):
Yeah, he's just got a bit of a hamstring niggle.
Not too sure the severity of there and what there
looks like. But yeah, no good for this week. So
for us like Canny God like Tom Christy who can
come and play sixty seventy games really better hardened, he
becomes a real leader for us to film the defensive
side of the ball. So it's a light flight replacement
and no doubt Tom will begin stuck into it.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
Will Jordan looking forward to it to be a huge
exchange South Island Derby the hunt of his host and
the Crusaders. I'm sure you'll be amongst and will we
thank you very much for your time here at News
Talks There b play hard.

Speaker 4 (07:34):
Thank you, enjoy game.
