Big League podcast News Talks.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
This week on The Big League Podcast, Warriors hooker Wade
Egan reacts to that try by lecqua halla Seima and
give some insight as to what went wrong in the
nail biting victory over the Knights in Newcastle. Michael Burgers
and I will give out two cents. What can be
done about the warriors abysmal right wing defense and they
surely surely can't lose to the Titans.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Right.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
My name is Nathan Limb. Let's go b LB. I
feel like I've just been through a washing machine. That
was one of the most outrageous finishers you will ever
see to a Warriors game. They were done, they were
dead and buried. They were so far gone. I wouldn't
have blamed you for turning off the tally. Three mifth
field goals, one missed penalty, some dreadful edge defense. The
(01:13):
Warriors shouldn't have won that, and quite frankly they didn't
deserve to. But then Lecquahalaesima grabs the charge down deflection
runs forty meters, evades six defenders and crashes over for
the match winning try in the final seconds. I feel
so sorry for my pregnant Landlords, who I happened to
(01:33):
share a war with, because I was screaming at the TV,
just like I'm sure you were as well. Michael Burgess,
Senior New Zealand Herald Ride up. We're going to get
stuck into the myriad of issues that came out of
this game for the Warriors, But first, let's start with
that finish.
Speaker 4 (01:51):
Were you screaming at the TV? No, No, I wasn't.
I was. I was in shock.
Speaker 5 (01:56):
I was.
Speaker 4 (01:59):
Just a complete, incomplete, stunned shock. You know, I'd written
my story. I'd written my story talking about how this
defeat is going to hurt so much, how it was
probably the worst defeat of the season, given the circumstances.
Speaker 5 (02:11):
The story is written, I was about to send it.
Speaker 4 (02:13):
It was all over, and as you say, the Warriors
had lost that game three or four times already, and
then that is I mean, we've been discussing it in
the office this morning. I was thinking about it last night.
It's one of the craziest finishes I've ever seen. Covering
the Warriors. It's one of the craziest finishes the Warriors
have ever had in thirty years.
Speaker 5 (02:31):
Just things like that just don't happen.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
They just do not happen until they happen, and then
you're trying to work out for the next three or
four days how it happened. And I'm sure every Warriors
fan out there will be watching the replay of that
the last ten seconds probably fifty times one percent.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
And you know, you're going through those final minutes and
Tenna's just missed a second field goal. He missed the
penalty from thirty five meters out, which was it wasn't
a gimmie, but it wasn't front and you're thinking, okay
that you know it's not going to happen because they
were setting up for that final field goal and he
was like forty five meters out and you think, there's
no way he didn't connect with the last one at all.
(03:09):
There is no way he kicks this, and he doesn't.
It gets charged down, Lecker grabs the ball and he
just makes that. He just gets in between those two players,
makes the gap up the field and you're thinking, hang on,
hang on a second. I still didn't think he was
going to score the try when he got to the
twenty because he had two defenders either side and the
fullback for the Knights was coming up, and all he
(03:30):
needed to do really was chopped Liquors legs and he
would have just fallen short of the tryline. He was
too far out. But Hala SEMA's footwork the left foot
the right foot step just put the defender the full
back in two minds and then the contact has made
what five six seven meters out from the tryline and
just momentum powers him over the line. I mean, talk
(03:51):
us through what that was.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
Yeah, it's still hard to comprehend how it happened. There
were like three or four miracles within those last seven
eight seconds. You know, Helly Seema picks up the ball.
When he picks up the ball, his facing the other way.
He had to turn around to pick up the ball.
There's three seconds to go. He's forty two forty three
meters out and he's sort of standing start. There's two
(04:16):
Nights players within three or four meters of him, and
he takes off.
Speaker 5 (04:20):
You know, for me that one of the keys was
from a standing start.
Speaker 4 (04:24):
Just boom took off those first five meters, which they
say every athlete, if they've got the speed over the
first five meters, you something special. He just goes suddenly
in is a gap. But as you say, there's still
Nights players converging. Fullback's coming. Then he managers had the
presence of mind to veer in and in out to
do the step. Dallan's calling for the ball ignores. Dollan
(04:45):
still knows what he's doing. But as you say, the
biggest miracle was Bradman Best jumps on his back.
Speaker 5 (04:53):
I looked at it again last night.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
He is eight meters out, Bradman Best jumps on his back,
so he's you know, he's jumping on him like a
bloody like a bloody line jumps on an antelope, trying
to bring him down. There's two other defenders coming and
he gets tackled about four meters before the line, and
again has the presence of mind to just say, I'll
be able to slide here in my momentum. He doesn't
(05:14):
try throwing the ball backwards over his head or something else.
Just incredible from a nineteen year old. The physical gifts
to do what he did, and also the mental speed
of thought to be able to process it so quickly.
Speaker 5 (05:30):
It's just amazing.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Coach Andrew Webster spoke about Leka obviously after the game,
and in typical fashion, he didn't point to Leckus Try
pointed to Hallaesima's defense, which included a try saving tackle
in the first half, and he says that defense is
growing week by week.
Speaker 6 (05:47):
He's his toughest critic around his defense.
Speaker 7 (05:50):
Lo.
Speaker 5 (05:50):
He works really hard at it.
Speaker 6 (05:51):
He's got a long way to go with it. We
all celebrate the one at the end, but he's got
some other brilliant.
Speaker 5 (05:55):
Stuff in him.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
Now, up next we are going to hear the perspective
of Warriors hooker Wade Egan on all of this. But first,
here are the highlights Warriors twenty Nights fifteen. You're gonna
love this. Sunday afternoon. Footing on nine void.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
Now Ah Chase is on and Toppy scores again against
Newcastle to kick towards Dom Young the two meter giants
out of England.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Up, he goes off hands.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
It's there for hunts and.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
The Knights hit back.
Speaker 5 (06:27):
Ruined to move Dag Guy best quick hands.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
Marsha holds on this time, so does Kate well Oh.
Passing off the ground. There isn't it now? He says,
the ball paring arm was above the ground. That's all
legal and fair game.
Speaker 5 (06:40):
And now the.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Knights lead quick hands Marsho. Surely this time they're.
Speaker 4 (06:46):
Flying the Knights every time they bring the ball left
here to Bdnan invest something happening.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
Ah By longer targeted Mshew and got the better of
the youngster and gives them the chance to level the
scores in Makok is going to have a crag.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
It's traveling. It's traveling. It's over or is it?
Speaker 3 (07:06):
Yes, it's over the crossbyve Chus. But it's a shot
at goal from almost directly in front to snatch victory,
chance to put the Warriors in front. It's hooking, it's
waved away. Can you get this run away? Shuts down?
It ricochet space here, look at it, go Halla, Sena.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
It's on foot back try save up piece with my time?
Speaker 3 (07:30):
Oh Waca, how the sea for the Warriors.
Speaker 7 (07:35):
Can you believe what you have just seen? No?
Speaker 2 (07:38):
I can't. I can't believe it. My audio Curtesy of
Channel nine The.
Speaker 5 (07:42):
Big League podcast.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
Michael Burgess got a quick chat with Warriors hooker White
Eagan after full time. Let's take a listen.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
That's a crazy night. It's a crazy finish.
Speaker 7 (07:53):
Yeah it was crazy mate. Yeah we the poet didn't
deserve to win it, but you know, anytime you get
two points in this league, you'll take it. So yeah,
when you get the borderleck over with a bit of space, mate.
He can do special things. And yeah, he done that.
Speaker 4 (08:07):
You've been around long time, you know, in the NRL,
but I can't imagine you've seen too many more remarkable
plays than that.
Speaker 7 (08:17):
I don't think, so that's I don't believe. I was
in shocked. Actually after I couldn't even I couldn't even celebrate.
I was in sort of disbelief. You've just done that,
and yeah, yeah, he's one of the most special players
I think I've seen for quite Yeah, I just gloody.
Speaker 4 (08:35):
It's funny you say that because the camera pant to
you in your face, you just looked like you didn't know.
Speaker 5 (08:39):
What was going on.
Speaker 7 (08:41):
I honestly didn't. I couldn't believe it. They Yeah, I
don't know. I don't know why, but I think I've
had a few of those things happened to me over
the years. On the other end, so it was nice
to get one where we went in the game.
Speaker 5 (08:52):
What was your view of the last play and held unfolded?
Speaker 7 (08:56):
Oh I was yeah, I think actually struck it pretty well,
but they got kid pressure in them. But yeah, if
you want the ball in someone's hands with the game
on the line and a bit of open space, I
think it's his probably in the whole comments to be fair,
a couple of players in the RL, they could probably
score a try from there, and I'm glad that is
up in his hands. He just sort of finds himself
in those spots most games left, and yeah, it was.
(09:18):
It was unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (09:20):
Did you realize it was only like six or seven
sickness to play when you pass the board to ten?
Speaker 7 (09:24):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's wine. That's why I went there.
We tried to field goal. I think it was a
two pointers, so if he sort we might have a
chance to win it. But yeah, just ended up the
way it was that we were trying to sort of
win the game there with a field goal and then yeah,
you see what happened that.
Speaker 4 (09:38):
As soon as you say, you're probably lucky to win it,
but what does this result mean?
Speaker 7 (09:43):
Yeah, that's very good mate. I was pretty well happy
with the with the performance. Nice nice made a pretic
good round. I thought it's might be fair though it's
tough and they throw it shape at us. But yeah,
we probably too many errors, I think now our own
end and to sort of ups and give them am
easy field position. But yeah, anytime you win this league,
win And yeah.
Speaker 4 (10:04):
How did you how did you sort of turn it
round after halftime though and get it a bit more solid.
Speaker 7 (10:09):
Ah, we just went back to our game for them,
maybe sort of trying to sort of put them in
their end. And I think we done it pretty well
in the second half, probably better than the first half.
We didn't as an errors and we sort of kicked
to the corners a bit more and we defend pretty
well in countries, so we're pretty pleased with the second
LSS effort. But yeah, our first half probably put out
to our standards.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
And just you mentioned Lechard before, can you just tell
us about what were your first impressions.
Speaker 5 (10:34):
Of him when he first turned up with training last week?
Speaker 7 (10:37):
Oh he's yeah, great kids, great kid, and he just
sort of willing to learn and very he's pretty relaxed
and they're easy going, and that's what all we love
about him. He just turns up on game days. Yeah,
and he's just a freak like seen seen today.
Speaker 5 (10:52):
What do you think makes him so good though? Wait,
because you would have seen some great athletes in your time.
Speaker 7 (10:58):
Oh, I just think he's he doesn't taken getting too serious.
I think I think it's pretty it's pretty cool to
see like he just has time with it and he
packs himself and backstability, and I think all the boys
back him as well. That's what the shines. I think
he's natural athlicability and he's footy playing life. He's Yeah,
he's just a footy player and he's some people sort
of I guess they can get coach out of him.
He hasn't a sort of wrong coach, but I think
(11:20):
we're sort of allowed there under bit himselves and yeah
he's he's himself and yeah, everyone just gets on board
with it.
Speaker 4 (11:26):
Yeah, backship and as one of the senior guys that
you met, James are used tot to trying to help
keep his feet on the ground as well and not
not let things, you know, get out of control in
that sense like we have seen with some other young staff.
Speaker 5 (11:39):
Yeah, a little bit.
Speaker 7 (11:39):
I guess he's a he's a very humble kid mate,
and he works out of training every and every week,
and yeah, he definitely doesn't get, you know, ahead of himself.
He still works very hard, and yeah, I think his
personality so like that. He's a very homble kid. And yeah,
I'm glad he's on our side.
Speaker 5 (11:56):
And can you tell us about the tri celebration?
Speaker 2 (11:58):
What that?
Speaker 5 (11:58):
What that meant the.
Speaker 7 (12:01):
I don't know. I think he shushes everyone. I think
he even shushed our home fans a couple of weeks ago,
So he's trade celebration.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
So I just want to nice about your try that
looked at full speed, That like a good try that
got momentum.
Speaker 5 (12:14):
How did you feel?
Speaker 7 (12:16):
Yeah, when I first when I first scored, I thought
it was a try. I thought to roll over with it.
But yeah, I'm not too sure if the ball carrying
arm hit the ground or whatever. Yeah, I'm I didn't
really get to have a look at it. I was
sort of in the huddle with the boys, and then
next thing was a note price, so I actually haven't
really looked at it yet. So yeah, I guess I
have a look and I thought I scored it, but
obviously I think my arm I hit the ground when
(12:37):
I think it was gay guy. That was old me,
So yeah, that is what it is.
Speaker 4 (12:41):
Did tonight feel like a bit of a banana skin?
All the Knights of me going well, they've had this
illness problems before the match, you guys were heavy favorites
and it's always such a tough place to go.
Speaker 7 (12:52):
Yeah. Man, they're still a tough team. I know to
have another results this year, but they're they're very great
team and they hang in most games. They've probably been
unlucky with your results, and yeah, I said before, they
probably a bit attention. It's tough. They defended well and
they played some pretty good footage. I think, you know,
they probably haven't got the results they want this year.
I think they're very, very tough team.
Speaker 4 (13:13):
And Tanner Boyd, I guess he had a he had
a tough night. He's coppying a bit of criticism. But
he also did step up for those conversions and I
guess people got to remember it's only his second match
in first grade for the Warriors.
Speaker 7 (13:26):
Yeah, he wants, he wants to take those moments and
that's all we love about him. And he's a half
back and anytime we're in that situation and if he
misses it, that's what the good players or do, mate,
So we'll keep backing him. I thought I thought he
was still had a very good game outside of outside
of those things, and you know, you go unlucky with
a goal kick and a couple of field goals. But
it's sort of the good players that step up in
those moments and want they're bore in their hands, and
(13:47):
he wanted that tonight. So yeah, we'll back in under.
Speaker 5 (13:50):
So just a couple more ways if that's okay.
Speaker 4 (13:52):
One nights like this, when this happens and it's something
pretty freakish, does it make you feel like something special
might be brewing this season?
Speaker 7 (14:01):
Oh, it's a cliche that sounds, man. Not really, We're
just sort of trying and take it game by game.
You know, we've got to go week by week and
just keep not show wins. Mate. We don't want to
try to look too far ahead. Obviously, we want to.
We have a great group of lights here and we're
playing some decent for you at the moment. But to
get what we want to go through, we still got
to keep improving each week. So yeah, not looking too
far ahead, mate, We're just trying to yeah, win each
(14:21):
game as it.
Speaker 4 (14:21):
Comes to you know, ice reporters love cloches and what
did you and what did the guys say the.
Speaker 5 (14:27):
Liquor after scores that try? What do you say?
Speaker 7 (14:30):
You know you trently say anything? Mate? We just got
around him. I just said, just give him a thank
you mate? Sex within this again, I guess, yeah, you
just you just get around him. He's a special player.
And I just starties on our.
Speaker 4 (14:42):
Side and is the ankle okay you had that incident
the first time?
Speaker 5 (14:45):
Yeah, yeah, this is going.
Speaker 8 (14:49):
Yeah, the Big League Podcast on the Worries Bad Wagons
since day one.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
This is the Big League Podcast.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
Fantastic to hear from Waite Egan there, great work Burds
on getting him over the phone after that. I find
it funny in that chat that even the players were
in shock by that last try.
Speaker 5 (15:11):
I loved that comment.
Speaker 4 (15:12):
I loved that comment that that Eagan admitted he didn't
sort of know what to do. He didn't notice it,
he didn't he couldn't celebrate because he was still in shock.
He was feeling what you know, hundreds of thousand people
in New Zealand who hadn't turned off their TV, we're
feeling watching the game themselves. So yeah, just just crazy.
And he's a guy that sees how he see me
(15:33):
every day. And I think he summed up really well
some of the things that make him so special. But
even so, he sees how he see me every day,
and he was still stunned by what Leka did. You know,
we just see him once a week on TV, so
it's it's quite remarkable.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
Now, let's go through this game in a little bit
more detail, and coach Andrew Webster first of all, his
overall summation of the game. He's proud his side were
able to stay in the contest throughout a lot.
Speaker 6 (15:59):
The way that we kept fighting and kept going after
the moment wasn't happy for us. We had some really
good looks at field goals, penalty goals, more earning that
through our defense and then come up with Freaki's played
by a young guy who's got heaps.
Speaker 5 (16:10):
Of talent, and that's what he's got in his toolkit.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
Now we've talked about Leka Halasima and the try, so
let's unravel what didn't go so well in the game, because,
like I said before, the Warriors didn't deserve to win,
and I thought for the most part, they played really
poorly apart from that opening twenty minutes berge. And we're
going to start with the Warriors left edge defense, so
it's from a warrior's perspective. The right hand side. Now,
(16:34):
we've talked a lot about it this season. I don't
think that it is an Rchilles' heel burge. I think
it is a gaping open wound. I've defended Dylan Watson
is a lesniak all year. I've talked to him loads
and he is a top, top bloke. But we have
to be blunt about the fact that he had a
shocking game. It's three dropped high balls, mistake at the
(16:55):
play the ball which led to a turnover, and then
the night's second try Kurt Capewell. That edge obviously had
trouble in leaked two tries Kurt Capebole. Was he carrying
an injury? Because the only thing that I could point
to that may have affected Dallan's decision making in terms
of which play he was targeting jamming, whether he jams
(17:15):
in or stays out, was the fact that if Capewell
was carrying an injury and wasn't running as well because
there was a break the Knights made down that side
where the player just sailed past Capewell as if he
wasn't even there. So potentially, when the ball was going
out to that edge, Dallan was going, Kurt is not
going to be able to make the tackle. I've got
a jam in. But then he has been doing this
in the entire season as well. What is your take
(17:36):
on this burge because I just think it's not good enough.
Speaker 4 (17:41):
Cape Well didn't get across for one one of those,
but all the others it was Dellan misjudging things. And
he's been a great player. He still can be a
great player, but he's down on confidence. He's been down
on confidence since he came back from injury, I feel,
and he needs something to get that back. And when
you're down on confidence, you know you're overthinking things. He's
(18:03):
worried about getting it wrong, making a mistake, but he
is getting it wrong some of the decisions to jam in.
And look, it's easy to blame wingers, that's the thing
we've got to remember. Easy to blame wingers. Wingers often
pay the price for things that happened back along the line,
so they're easy targets. But it is obvious that the
Warriors are being stung a lot on that edge, and
(18:24):
Dallan Dallan's misreading so because also that that muff to
play the ball was a killer that came just after
that came just after Tyler Pecki had made an amazing
try saving tackle. A play later, Hella Sema makes an
amazing try saving tackle, so they survived. The Warriors got
the ball back, and then there's a muff play the ball,
(18:45):
which which sort of it happens, but it's a lack
of focus hot.
Speaker 2 (18:50):
It was a mistake you make at the end of
the game when you are exhausted, not something that should
happen twenty minutes in.
Speaker 4 (18:56):
So that's the sort of thing that kills Fords. Kills
Fords because I've worked so hard, they've repelled them. And
then and then the Night scored their second try off
that real turning point. So it does need some work.
Maybe Andrew Webster got it wrong. We don't criticize him
much on this podcast because he doesn't get much wrong.
Speaker 5 (19:13):
I could see his logic.
Speaker 4 (19:14):
Cape was really solid defensively the right edge, But maybe
for someone like Bradman Best, who's so quick and so
hard to deal with and as you say, I think
cape Weell was carrying a little bit of something.
Speaker 5 (19:25):
He did get. He did struggle, so maybe I mean.
Speaker 4 (19:29):
To Webster's credit, you saw at the end of the
game of about thirteen to fourteen to go, he switched
Pompey to that side and that sort of sealed it up.
So that was very good smart thinking on the run.
But the Knights could have scored five tries down that edge.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
They were not clinical at all, the Knights. And just
on what you were saying about Cape Well, I don't
blame Andrew Webster at all in terms of having I
called for cape Well to be on that edge last podcast.
I thought he was the best option they're given his
experience to be able to support Dallen. And I think
the fact that if he was carrying that sort of injury,
(20:04):
which I'm not sure if we got clarity on what
exactly that was, if he was carrying an injury, that
definitely would have hindered him. And if he can get
over that, I still would probably want him there next week.
It's just that performance just wasn't good enough.
Speaker 5 (20:19):
Yeah, let's see what they do.
Speaker 2 (20:20):
I mean.
Speaker 4 (20:21):
The other school of thought is when does Ali la
Tala come back because he's a specialist center and coming
up to the finals, you really want your specialists. What else, though,
what else have you got? I guess there's a lot
more from the game?
Speaker 2 (20:35):
Yeah, Tanner Boyd was my next point because I feel
like this is the sort of situation where he will
cop a lot of crap from the fans this week.
Given the finish, the three missed field goals, the miss penalty,
I was really impressed with him. I thought he played
really really well. Yes, he missed those field goals and
late penalty, but it took balls to keep attempting it
(20:56):
after he'd muffed those. This is only his second game
at half back for the club, but he never shied
away from it. Even from forty five meters out with
three seconds on the clock, he still wanted the ball
in his hands. He still wanted to be the player
taking that chance and I like that. But like Wade
Egan said, I thought he was superb. But his general
play kicking was pinpoint, perfectly dropping bombs just before the
(21:19):
try line, even when they were sort of forty meters out,
he was still landing them in between the try line
and the ten and the Knights were under pressure whenever
they are taking those cacks. He was had a nicely
way to grub a kick into the Knight's end goal
at a pump. He scores the first try. That stuff
is not easy to do, and Boyd, from what I've
seen so far, is ruthlessly consistent with it.
Speaker 4 (21:40):
Yeah, I wouldn't say he was superb or had really
strong game. I think that's been quite nice. But on
the other hand, I will agree with you as I
like to do that he's going to cop a lot
of criticism, and a lot of it is unwarranted because
he should never have been in the situation or having
a kick a penalty at the end, or having a
kick a feel golt. The and the Warriors are so
dominant in that first twenty minutes, they should have been
(22:02):
further ahead. There are a couple of calls that went
against them, which we have to get to as well.
So so much as on his shoulders, and you're exactly right.
You could sort of see in his eyes he wasn't
that confident lining up that penalty. He wasn't set properly
for that field goal. The first one from a distance,
the one he should have got, was the one close
to the post with about seven minutes to go. Where
(22:22):
he put it, Why that was that was the really
unfortunate one. But it is only a second game. He
would have had so much going through his head. And what
I do like is that that'll be good for him.
That's that one out of the way, and now he
can move on. He'll be much better for that experience.
He'll be relieved that Leka saved, you know, because he's
still the half back. It is his job. He's the
(22:43):
goal kicker, he's the half back. He's I take your point.
He was stepping up, but that penalty, you know, you
got to hit it cleaner, and you could see his reaction.
He knew he sort of hooked it like like one
of my golf shots.
Speaker 5 (22:54):
But his organization was still pretty good.
Speaker 4 (22:56):
You're right about his kicking game, the way he can
land it just before the try line. So we can't
undo what was saying about him last week. He was
really good last week and there's still a good basis.
It was just just a furnace to be in. There's
last three or four minutes.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
It was a furnace. And Andrew Webster has welcomed how
Boyd faced the challenge.
Speaker 5 (23:14):
Lots of halves.
Speaker 6 (23:15):
They're going to be in that situation where you've got
to have the big moment at the end. But he
just wanted to keep having a crack at it, which
is the best sign.
Speaker 5 (23:22):
He didn't hide and you wanted to keep going.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
Now, there were a couple of controversial incidents burst It
will just touch on quickly. The first one Wade Egan.
Did he score that try because it looked at full
speed like momentum just carried him over. Obviously, they ruled
that his arm carrying the ball touched the ground and
therefore he can't reach out. What was your take on it,
because I did understand where the bunker was coming from.
Speaker 5 (23:42):
There, Oh, you understand where the bunk is coming from.
Speaker 4 (23:44):
But this is the problem of slowing things right down
versus common sense, like when you see it when you
see it in full speed, and even the replays straight after,
the commentators didn't even consider double movement. It was just
for me, just he just squeezed over because momentum took
him over. And that's what Andrew Roberson was so frustrated
after the game. We all know what a double movement is.
(24:05):
You know, double movement as you hit the ground bomb
and then you sort of get up again and stop
and you reach out, you know, but he didn't even
need to reach out.
Speaker 5 (24:12):
You sort of bom so.
Speaker 4 (24:14):
And that was quite a flash point because that was
that was twelve nil and they get the ball back instead.
Straight after that, jackson Ford got pinged at the play
the ball, Knights went downfield and scored a try with
that rebound. So that's one flash point and the other one,
which we're coming to, is the night's second try when
Greg Marzu had three players on top of him. Okay,
(24:35):
his arm wasn't touching the ground, but three players on
top of him and gets the ball inside to gag guy.
Speaker 5 (24:40):
I thought.
Speaker 4 (24:41):
Andrew Wibster summed it up really well after the match.
He said said, is this league or union sort of thing?
You see in union where you can pass off the ground,
but in league generally you tackled a couple of players
on him, you can't pass off the ground.
Speaker 5 (24:52):
I don't know what you thought, but I didn't mind it.
Speaker 4 (24:54):
The ref interpreted himself and the bunker didn't look at it,
so that's cool.
Speaker 5 (24:58):
But it was a bit of a stretch.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
Well. We even heard the commentators were questioning it. There's
Channel nine commentators there. I understand the ruling because you're right,
his arm had carrying the ball, hadn't touched the ground.
But at the same time, I felt like the tackle
was complete, like he chopped the ground and there was
a moment where it paused and then he flicked the
ball up. So that was my issue with it. I
(25:21):
think if the Warriors hadn't ended up winning, this would
be a much much stronger talking point. But again, it's
just that sort of gray area. And with both of
these issues, there's a little gray area around the interpretation
and how fast you go back and look at it,
and how much the plane needs to actually stop before
it's considered. It goes into double movement territory, or you
can or you can't flick an offload off the ground.
(25:42):
But for me, the tackle was complete.
Speaker 4 (25:44):
Yeah, And let's be clear though, Let's be clear, the
Knights were still the better team. The Knights still deserved
the wind. So that's one of those things. Those two
incidents changed the momentum. But a Warriors team that's a
top four team can't let those things affect them as
much as it did. And the Nights, Yeah, they were
(26:04):
in a way they were robbed, weren't they in a
way they were robbed and just very quickly on the
Warriors attack. Just in that first twenty minutes. The Warriors
were just camped in the Nights twenty and I thought,
you know, you felt like they should have scored at
least one more try than they did. They should have
had a been out twelve nil eighteen mel given the
dominance in.
Speaker 2 (26:23):
That early period. But I don't want to actually, I
don't want to blame the Warriors attack here. I thought
Tanner Boyd was steering them pretty well. Those cats he
was putting up were very contestable. Yes, Dylan wats in
his Olesniak dropped a couple of those high balls when
there was a chance for him to just catch it
and fall on the line. But I thought Newcastle's defense
was incredible.
Speaker 5 (26:42):
It was amazing.
Speaker 4 (26:42):
It was one of the best stretches of defense I've
seen this season. I mean it summed up by the
fact that at halftime the Warriors that had thirty tackles
I'm sure this is right, thirty tackles in the opposition
red zone. You never see that. And at the score
not only scored one try. So it was crazy. Knights
were defending. Felt like the Knights, it was like their
(27:05):
biggest game of the year.
Speaker 5 (27:06):
They were amazing.
Speaker 4 (27:07):
But the Warriors were but lateral. They were a little
bit east to west instead of going north first, you know,
and it felt like when they're really good, they punched
through a bit more and then go wide. But there's
a little bit of going white early, and that did
limit the effectiveness of what they were trying to do.
Speaker 2 (27:26):
Now, we like to hold ourselves accountable on the Big
League podcast, and this week, unfortunately it is my turn.
Speaker 5 (27:32):
When's he going to listen to me? When I might
have been eighty two episodes.
Speaker 2 (27:37):
I might have been a little bit eighty one episodes.
I might have been a little bit confident about the
warriors chances last week. They're also without Klein Ponger. The
Warriors are going to absolutely steamroll and merge.
Speaker 4 (27:51):
I don't see any way out for the nights here.
Don't get too carried away. Don't think it's going to
be easy. It's not going to be easy. Is going
to win by thirty It was a bit arrogant. Yeah,
you're a bit complacent, and good on you for bringing
it back there on you for finding that clip and
owning your owning your mistake and look, we all live
(28:13):
and learn. And after eighty one episodes, maybe you might
go home today and talk to you for that man
to say, Actually, I'm going to start listening to Michael
Burgess a bit more because his shit, he really knows
his stuff.
Speaker 2 (28:25):
Gosh, maybe I'm not the arrogant one. Maybe that's where
it's my.
Speaker 5 (28:29):
Big league podcast, right.
Speaker 2 (28:30):
The Warriors host the Titans on Saturday night at Mount Smart. Somehow,
this is the first time they're playing the Titans this year. Bird,
We're twenty one rounds in to the season and they
play the Titans again about three weeks after this, So well,
it's going to be all Titans for the next few
weeks unfortunately. But the Titans they sit dead last on
the NRL Ladder with four wins and thirteen losses. They're
(28:51):
coming off a twenty one twenty loss to the Tigers
in West Sydney. Benji Marsha will be sighing a big
heap of relief.
Speaker 5 (29:01):
Will Ever.
Speaker 2 (29:03):
Adam Dewey with the a field goal in the seventy
ninth minute, they are likely the Titans to be without
Skippettino fu saw Malioi at Locke due to a knee injury,
but Kean Kini should be back from a neck injury.
Obviously we know Keeny impressed for the late last year,
so he will be dynamic. They've also got aj Brimson
(29:24):
who scored against the Tigers. He's so dangerous at fullback
and obviously familiar with Kiaren fourn and Jaden Campbell in
the halves. Burge, do we need to be worried about
this because I want to go out there and say
that Warry is going to put forty on them, But
I'm Steamer right, I'm slightly lacking the confidence to say that.
Speaker 5 (29:41):
Now.
Speaker 4 (29:41):
Well, look, the last time the Titans came to Mount
Smart they were also dead last on the ladder. They'd
lost seven games in a row, maybe eight, I think
it was seven. They hadn't won a game that season.
This is last year, right, Anzac Day. We're all looking
forward to a big party, and what happened? The party
never happened. Well, the party happened having with the Gold
Coast Tanna Boyd. I think he kicked five six conversions
(30:04):
of penalty of field goal and they won twenty seven
to twenty four.
Speaker 5 (30:06):
So it was a friggin nightmare. Can't see that happening again.
Speaker 4 (30:09):
But the Titans are They became the Warrior's bogey team
last year, they beat them twice and they just got
them with this pure X factor and pace that they've got.
So the Warriors will need to be really careful, really
prepare well, not be complacent, ignore the table, all those
good things. But you feel like this Warriors team a
better team than last year's team, so surely it can't
(30:32):
happen again.
Speaker 5 (30:32):
It won't happen again.
Speaker 4 (30:33):
The Warriors will be prepared for what's coming and they
will take so much relief and confidence and momentum from
what happened and what happened in Newcastle, so they'll be fine.
Speaker 5 (30:44):
But they just need to start well. They've got to
start well and stamp their throat in the game.
Speaker 2 (30:49):
Is it last year that the Titans put like sixty
on the Warriors.
Speaker 5 (30:51):
Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 4 (30:52):
So with the ends of day game with twenty seven
to twenty four, which is like, you know, first NZI
day at home for years, this is going to be great.
And then they lost and then revenge Gold Coast sunny
afternoon and they got absolutely smashed. Although two of the
better players on both those matches Aaron Clark, Tanner Boyd
(31:13):
and now we'reing Warriors Jersey, so that also fills you
with a bit of confidence.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
Now in terms of the Warrior's lineup, thankfully there went
any more injuries there, which is I mean, apart from
whatever Capewell was struggling with, do we get confirmation on
what that actually was?
Speaker 4 (31:27):
Well, it looked like a thigh or quadrcept didn't it
from his bandages. They also mentioned that Tanner Boyd had
been touch and go Captain's run with some kind of
slight quad complaint, and Chanell had a calf, so there
are a few little things going on. We didn't mention
Chanelle too. I think he's another one that won't be
completely happy with as a game. Like you say, Tanner
(31:49):
is going to get some grief, but Chanel one particular
play where they just got a repeat set and first
tackle run it of just getting blind, so he gets
pushed over the sideline with about twelve to go. That
was another coach killers, So yeah, there's plenty to work
on now.
Speaker 2 (32:04):
I said earlier that I'm happy for Kirk Capble to
remain in that into position as long as he is
fit and he's not still going to be carrying that
injury and that's not going to be hampering him during
the game. Do you want him there or do you
want Ali l'a talleran.
Speaker 4 (32:16):
I'd like to see Ali there, really would. I mean,
Kate was a safe bet. It will be tempting because
it's another big game. You want to lock it down.
It's a safe bet. But at some stage you've got
to think about what you want to do in September.
Maybe Webster wants to do this, Maybe he wants Kate
Weller in the centers of September.
Speaker 5 (32:34):
But he's been amazing.
Speaker 4 (32:36):
But it's a big ask, even for Kurt, who's an
amazing competitor, because he's against up against these guys who've
got so much pace. And I wouldn't mind just seeing
what Ali Lautawa can do. But maybe Webster thinks Cap
willers the answered defensively. It's a big question.
Speaker 8 (32:52):
The Big League Podcast on the Worry Is Bad Wagon
since day one, The Big League Podcast for the Biggest
League fans.
Speaker 2 (33:06):
Okay, cook Fire Predictions Bird. We're going into Round twenty
one of the NRL I was starting off with quite
a biggie. It's Roosters versus the Storm, and it's in
Sydney and the Storm just lost to the Seagulls. Craig Bellamy,
I wouldn't want to be at Storm training this week. No, No,
he should have seen him in the press conference. He
was he didn't know what to say. For the first
(33:26):
few seconds you could see he was fuming. I mean,
no one predicted that eighteen sixteen to Manly, no one
at all. The Storm will bounce back. They always do.
Speaker 4 (33:35):
They almost never lose two games in a row, especially
in that manner.
Speaker 5 (33:38):
So yeah, the Storm for mine, and.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
The Rooster's coming off a lost to the Sharks as well.
Speaker 4 (33:43):
Cowboys, Dragons, man the Dragons almost beat the Bulldogs. That
would have been something because they would have really helped
the Warriors too. I think the Bulldogs needed a seventy
eighth minute try to get up for that, to get
up for that win twenty eighteen. So Dragons, they're still
they're still right in it. But I like the Cowboys
in Townsville generally, and it's it's a tough match for
the Dragons to recover from.
Speaker 5 (34:04):
So I'll go with North Queensland here.
Speaker 2 (34:06):
Yeah, the Cowboys shelled forty three points odd number, forty
three points to the Dolphins, and I was still, oh,
actually no, no, I'm going for the Dragons. I've changed
my mind.
Speaker 4 (34:20):
Broncos versus your Broncos all day off, the by their sailing.
They're sailing ever since that they turned a quarter about
three or four weeks ago, and there they're a top
fourteen that's hiding down in the fifth spot.
Speaker 2 (34:32):
Warriors versus the Titans.
Speaker 4 (34:36):
Yeah, Warriors that this will be their night to really
get going. The Tigers they are okay, weren't they two
weeks ago? They're okay at home, but still a lot
of mistakes. They weren't great on Sunday and gets the
nights in a lot of ways. So I feel like
everything could click against the Titans. Titans will still be
good for a future. Ees interesting to see two where
the chances back and we'veter.
Speaker 2 (34:56):
Said last week that he should be back for this game.
Speaker 5 (34:58):
Well there you go.
Speaker 4 (34:59):
I mean the tame was very good again, I mean
them Andrew Ross and commentary and Steve Roacher going on,
oh look he's not doing many run meters. But it
wasn't that type of game. But man, he saved a
couple of tries. He looks sparky. He's still still a
really good player.
Speaker 2 (35:14):
Well potentially if I mean if playing that well, put
him on the wing instead of Dowan. Chance goes back
to fullback.
Speaker 5 (35:19):
Actually, there you go, there you go.
Speaker 4 (35:21):
That's that's going to be a really big call because
it would be a massive decision to drop Dowlan, but
there would be a temptation on just just effect is
down on confidence.
Speaker 5 (35:30):
So the Warriors, Yeah, the Warriors.
Speaker 4 (35:32):
To get the job done at home, and I feel
like it'll be won't be as nervoy as the as
the Tigers game. Panthers versus the Tigers, another team that's
turned the corner. There was their turning point. They're coming
there on the way they're back. It'll be close because
it's a West West Sidney thing and Tigers will be
(35:53):
really motivated for it. But the Panthers they're sailing home
towards the playoffs.
Speaker 5 (35:57):
Now.
Speaker 4 (35:58):
Bunny Sharks, Yeah, the Rabbits they're heading towards the wooden spoon.
It's very sad, very sad for Wayne Bennett, very sad
for the club. So many issues, so well, so many
injuries mainly.
Speaker 2 (36:10):
Yes, the rabbit o's are absolutely in the mud fifteenth
on the ladder, coming off of hiding at the hands
of the Panthers. So I will agree with you that
the Sharks get the job done in Sydney Raiders versus
the Knights.
Speaker 4 (36:21):
Raiders heading towards the minor Premiership, I don't think anyone's
going to stop them getting first place. They might not
even lose another game this year the way they're going
from memory, They've got quite a decent draw in the
run and so the Knights will be shattered by what happened.
Speaker 5 (36:34):
So Raiders all day.
Speaker 2 (36:36):
And the last one Bulldogs see you goes both sides
coming off solid. Well, see he was a very solid performance.
Bulldogs are still winning and they're still up there.
Speaker 5 (36:44):
Yes, far out.
Speaker 4 (36:45):
That's this is This is the game of the round
and always this is the fifty to fifty one, isn't it.
Speaker 5 (36:49):
I might go Manly, here go Manly, go go Manly.
Speaker 2 (36:54):
I'm going to back the Bulldoers because they are at
home game Manly Michael Bitches, thank you so much for
your time, your wisdom, your insight. Please follow and rate
the podcast. Thank you for making us a part of
your week. We will be back next Monday to digest
what is hopefully a job one hundred and fifty point
win for the Warriors over the Titans. My name is
Nathan Limb. Have a fantastic week.
