Speaker 1 (00:00):
Southern nights, Glenn Campbell, there would have been a good
Southern night in Southland last night. Today's panel is the
farmer politician panel. They're both cowcockies, ones from Northland, ones
from one or two. Andrew Hoggard and Grant mcnasal McCallum.
Neither of you, two losers have had the shield since
nineteen seventy nine.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Seventy eight, mate, sorry seventy eight, but we still got
off to my fault. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Well, to be fair, I'm a bit of a rugby historian,
and I know that the one or two team, as
I said that, they were full of great players, Mark Donaldson,
Frank Oliver ken Granger. But Northland also at the time
had a great rugby side as well.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Yes we did. We had a great team back then,
and it was we wanted the referee. I think played
about ten minutes of extra time, we got a penalty
and won the game, and then then we took the
shield home and said, ah, because it was going to
be something like Octave, we don't have to take challenges,
so we said not of South and and Otago apparently
from memory, and but then we lost Aukland next year,

(01:01):
so I.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
Reckon I'm just this is just out of the back annals, anals, annals,
of course, of my mind. Grant it was there a
guy called Chippy semonof who the penalties.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Correct, Yes, kicking the penalty and the people of man
Or to have never be given that referee.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
Andrew Hoggard, Were you old enough to go to footy
in those.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
Days seventy nine? I was three and four, so no, no,
first game I remember was Warrapper Bush versus the Lions
eighty one I think it was eighty two. Eighty three
would be eighty three, okay, it's yeah, yeah, it would

(01:41):
have been Southland. Just need to hold her on for
a couple more games, drop it to counties and then
counties hold of the game and then mental two's and
with a chance again.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
Yeah, well one of them. Someone's texted and said, be
aware the counties are waiting. Well they haven't had it.
Well they never had it for years and years and years,
and I think they have had it, haven't they? And
then they lost it quickly?

Speaker 3 (02:02):
Correct? Yeah, they have had it? Yeah, okay there, yeah, all.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Right, okay, let's get on to the issues of the day.
You're both politician farmers. Hou's carving going because Grant, I
got a text last week and it was remissive me
not to read it out. I just ran out of
time from a farmer up in north and who said
it has been really wet.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Yeah, yeah, it certainly has done. We've had a particularly
wet seat sort of cold spring. Grass grows a bit sluggish.
We fair to say we're we're all away tighter than
wether time last year, and so yeah, everyone's at looking
forward to a spring that is a bit warmer and
some more sunlight and we get more grass because it's
a bit tougher out up here at the moment for

(02:41):
our team.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
And I understand grasses growing slowly in the month or
two as well. Andrew.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
Yeah, spit tight at the moment. But up until I
think it was the last Friday, we've had a week
of some pretty beautiful weather. So you could just see
the grass moving in front of end when I was home.
That was. But yeah, so it's starting to get better
weather now, So yeah, it feels like it's going to
take off.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
What are you two make? And I'll stick with you.
Andrew of the Open country acquisition of meat Racer.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
I didn't even know that one had happened.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
All right, Well I won't ask you then, what about
you grant you've got yours?

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Just announce mate, they're literal announce at the day. Yeah,
I think we'll good luck to them. That's the market
at work, amagency, how it all works, open country and
expandentory mode. And I suppose they'll be There will be
competition in their own way for Fonterra, and that keeps
everyone on their toes, which is a good thing.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
You're both Fonterra farmer shareholders. What are you going to
do with all your money?

Speaker 3 (03:44):
I still have the last bit of the farm to
buy off my parents, so I'm pretty sure that'll be
the deposit for that.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
Now, Andrew, here's a serious question, do you what do
you reckon most farmers will do? I reckon farmers are
pretty sensible. They'll pay down debt or pay off the
debt surrounding the purchase of their fontea because a lot
of them paid six or seven bucks for them anyhow,
So I don't think that's going to be yep. I
don't think there's going to be like a mass rush
for the jet boat shops. I mean, you're more likely

(04:11):
to buy a tractor than a jet boat, aren't you.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
Look I think look, Deli, you'll get a few people
that want to go and splurge on that toy that
I've never kept to own. But I think most will
be investing back into the farm, improving it or paying
down debt, which whichever one works for them.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
You're a bit of a playboy, Grant McCallum. I bet
you you buy a toy.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
That idea from one. Don't know why I come on
this show some days on are going to get abused
by you, James.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
No, No, all publicity is good publicity. You've got an
election next year. Pal is Ellen first going to be
gunning for you in Northland.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Yeah, they did last time. We had a great competition.
It's always entertaining on the half steeds with them with
old Shane Jones. Look, look, ser we'll be investing back
in the farm and paying down some debt. We've got
to do some environmental stuff and I just like to
make a shout out now. That's assuming, by the way,
that the Farmer's shareholders voth to go through the process.

(05:11):
That's firstly got to happen, and I think we should
as a shareholder I'm very keen to see. I think
it's a smart move. I disagree with Damien actually, and
I just think it'll be good for our farm business.
I'd just like to make a shout out now Jamie too.
And this is the sorts of things we can do
with that sort of money. Is it's conservation Week this week?
And I know farmers do a lot of good work

(05:33):
in this space and the QY two Trust is an
example of that. We farmers invest a lot into bencing
off and and I know you have as well. And
I just so this is sorts of areas that farmers
will love to spend money on. And are you watch
that's what will happen.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
I love the QRY two National Trust.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
You too.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
In fact, your coalition government needs to fund them a
bit better.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Andrew, you've made some working on with those bio diversity credits.
That will be an option for them to be able
to get some extra can't.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Come soon enough. What's your announcement on the poultry industry.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
So that was last week. We signed an operational agreement
with both the egg producers and the poultry industry around
how we're going to manage not only bird flu but
also to other diseases Newcastle disease and something combversal disease,
infectious bursal disease, that's the one. So a range of

(06:25):
pretty serious poultry diseases, and just sort of setting out
what the cost sharing arrangements will be and around a
response and most importantly reading this because obviously if we
can do the readiness part well, that cuts down on
the need to go to the more expensive response costs.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
Andrew, We've got your boss, David Seymour on the show
tomorrow and the reason for that is there's a big
announcement coming from ACT tomorrow on the Paris Accord agreement.
Are are you going to do a New Zealand first
and kick.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
It to touch? I'm sure David can tell you all
about it tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
What do you reckon? They'll do?

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Grund Andrew, come on, it's obvious. Mark Cameron has been
running around saying a few things pretty obviously are going.
Jamie thought, I'm.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
Not going to steal the bosses thunder, So we'll hear
about it tomorrow. We'll take it and already heard it
various interviews with David and myself over the last year
or so.

Speaker 1 (07:23):
Anyway, so there's only the woe cold nats who want
to stay in there, right.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
Know, the sensible people that actually understand how international markets
and trade work and how important our reputation is. That is,
That is basically what it boils down to, Jamie. Yeah, well,
we're happy to have this debate, my friend. Will you
go formally public with it and then let's have the
debate just to finish on.

Speaker 3 (07:45):
It's something that treats agriculture on the same footing as
all the other stuff we'll get to at the moment.
The Paris cor just does not work for agriculture. It
treats it like it's co two. We need to recogniicate it.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
David Sema on that one tomorrow the announcement. That's the
announcement of the announcement. Great great day for Southland rugby yesterday.
Not so good over the weekend although they did they
did Southland Boys very good team did finish third in
their first national First fifteen championship. But a one or
two side Fielding Egg? Are they still called Fielding Egg

(08:19):
or just Fielding High? Very well? They made the.

Speaker 3 (08:21):
Finals to the Yeah, so technically it's Fielding High School,
but the acronym still fa HS, so we still have
the egg and they're sort of but yeah, no bloody
top effort from the team, particularly given you know, it's
Fielding's not a huge town and a lot of people
to pull from state co ed school footing it with

(08:45):
all the name private boys schools around there, so for
them to get to the finals was a pretty awesome.

Speaker 1 (08:52):
Great rugby school, the White Locks, Aaron Smith, you name it. Okay,
got to go lads, there we go. That is the
