Throughout the day, racers will compete for one of 60 trophies which are on permanent display at the Maritime Museum, and over $15,000 worth of prize money.
Thousands of spectators are also expected to attend the event.
It has been running for 185 years, making it New Zealand's oldest sporting event.
The regatta starts at 9am with dragon boat races on the Viaduct Harbour.
