Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sport, the latest from the Land and just great rock.
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport,
your home of live commentary.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Well as you know, England have won the opening cricket
Test against New Zealand and christ hugs comprehensively. I've got
to add by eight wickests. A post lunch flurry saw
England chase one hundred and four required in just twelve
point four overs. Joining us on the show this morning,
host of the front foot, of the man who's probably
wondering what he's going to do with himself today, expecting
there was going to be cricket, Brian wideld what.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
He was IBKH today of reflection.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
A day of reflection. Yes, I mean the old adage
mate catches win matches would never have been truer. Eight
dropped catches in England's first innings of four hundred and
ninety nine by the black Caps. And that's not good enough,
is it?

Speaker 1 (00:50):
No? And one of those was dropped to five six times.
And he's the best batsman they've got, one of the
best going around. You don't give him a chance. And
it turned what could have been the first of things
lead for New Zealand after a very good innings of
three forty eight being put in on that track to
a deficit of one hundred and fifty and they just
didn't show the batting strength to withstand the England pace

(01:16):
attack and they end up paying. And it was all
due to those drop catches, even though they don't admit it.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
In New Zealand, Captain Tom Latham, I mean he's spilt
three himself, didn't he, which is unusual.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
Yeah, well they were and Glenn Phillips another one in
the gully is you know, he takes one of the
most miraculous catches you will ever want to see. But
that's fine and you can laud that, but when you
put two softies down, that's when you've got to wonder
what caused it and are they doing the work, and
to not accept that it is other than an isolated incident,

(01:52):
because it's not the first time. Remember back to the
Sri Lankan series and the catches they put down, the
slip chances that were missed in those test matches when
they lost that series comprehensibly, Well, the same thing's happened here.
It really does require some work. You don't want to
panic over it, but it does need some work to
be done to make sure they're sharp when it comes

(02:13):
to the catching, because England's catching was outstanding.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
Well, you know catches when matches, as I mentioned, they
were trying to look for excuses in a way like
they were saying, maybe the botanical gardens at Hagley Park
Hagley Oval camouflaging the ball, would that be an excuse.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
Oh, there's always been those excuses with how many test
matches as I've played at Heckney Oval. Now, there used
to be the situation in Wellington when you were feeling
at gully or slip and the embankment where they've got
those red stones, you know, the bricks that sort on
an embankment were often seen as an obstruction. Those are
obstructions in terms of visualization of the ball or being

(02:54):
able to see it exist in every ground. You just
have to take the catchers. I mean they do the
good job of getting to your situation. You look at
the one that Conway put down. I mean he traveled
a lot of ground to get there to be able
to make that catch. But when you get there, you've
got to do the business, and they weren't able to
do it. So you know, background is always a problem.

(03:15):
So's the sky. It's a very bright blue or it
can be gray. You have to be able to catch
in those situations. And you say catches win matches, they
also lose matches.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
How impressed were you by debutante Nathan Smith?

Speaker 1 (03:31):
Oh, very impressed. Here's a guy who has Sharonta talon
at domestic level and he looks the goods for a
mid to lower order batsman and bowlder. He ended up
with what three wickets I think of the first and
things when he probably should have had six, and his
average will look pretty low, part of about about fifty

(03:54):
at the moment where he should be averaging fifteen or sixteen.
He and Will O'Rourke the future of our bowling Ben
Sears is another one and we're getting grestages where we
may just have to look at the next Test match
at the base in reserve because it's going to be
played on a similar type of pitch to bring in
Jacob Duffy rather than using Tim Soudy with the new ball.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
Can you see many changes for that Sekon Test that
gets underway on Friday and Willington.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
Well, I don't think they will because they stick with
their tried and true and you know that loyalty is
always important. But to my mind, I think they need
to beef up the attack by bringing in Duffy at
the expense of Saudi. And you know, it's hard to

(04:43):
say that the confidence levels of Devon Conway seemed to
be slipping and the man who batted through a storm
in India, Will Young, probably should be considered. They may
also need to be a change at the middle order,
and Phillips may need to go one ahead of Tom
Blundle because his confidence with the bat seems to be

(05:05):
lacking as well.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
And we look at the we look at the England team.
Pretty impressive that team really, I mean Bridon Carson, mean,
he was man of the match, so you know you
have to be impressed by a number of new players
in that team.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
Yeah, but he basically bowls well, not a lot more
different than we saw from willow Urke. They've got some
good players, there's no doubt about that, and they give
them the free reign to go about their duty. You
can look at players like Harry Brook, I mean, here's
a got a few give them five innings. He's going

(05:40):
to say thank you, very much. I'll make one hundred
and seventy and you know that he's a quality player.
Cast will be interesting. They've got a lot of good
fast bowlers because you know, they've got Ollie Stone who's
part of this set up as well. They've got Jimmy
Anderson in charge of him and he will bring a
lot of experience. They've got some good flowers, but they're

(06:00):
not unbeatable and New Zealand has got to be able
to put pressure on them, which they weren't able to
do by dropping catchers and not being able to restrict
the lead that England took on the first innings.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
I guess it was reassuring to see Kin Williamson in
the runs. Didn't quite get the ton I thought. I
was hoping you'd getting that first innings. But he's almost
back to his best form.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Well, I don't think he's ever out of his best form,
so he said, I mean, you look at his stats.
He's averaging around up near the sixty mark, and you
know he's just a wonderful criminal to watch. I've never
seen him flustered. That was something that was brought up.
You know, he's always calm and collected every now and
again he might be put under a little bit of pressure,

(06:42):
but he regains his composure and he's always batted like
that and he looks so good when he's at the grease.
I was ready to celebrate one hundred for him because
he deserved it in those conditions, because it was it
was hard batting on that first day with the picture's
bouncy and as pace as.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
It was in a nice weey knock. Daryl Mitchell yesterday
couldn't quite say the day that he got into the
eighties too, didn't he?

Speaker 1 (07:04):
Yeah, And you know there's there's plenty of form there
and quality in the New Zealand side. It's a matter
of delivery, y.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
You know, the.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
Players are there. Latham, Conway Vender is another one.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
You though.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
He can pick out centuries and double centuries. He's got
a Test match level. They're there. It's just a matter
of being a little bit sharper, a little bit smarter
about what they do rather than give away some of
those soft dismissals that they gave, particularly in the first
and but also in the second.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
On the positive side of things, have got an extra
day really now this week to sort of you know,
get down work on catching work on other aspects of
the game before hitting Wellington on Friday.

Speaker 1 (07:42):
It's a matter of sharpening the game map and making
sure they're able to square the series, because I think
they can.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
All right once. We'll thank you for joining us, mate.
You can take the day off today and look forward
to that test on Friday.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
I might go and watch the West INDI's played Bangla Dish.
That's on TV.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Oh there you go, right, Brian model Bryan Modael joining
this morning here on Gold Sport on the Country Sport Breakfast,
wrapping the first cricket Test with honors in that one
going to England. But there's two more to go.
