Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the sports field to the shearing Shed. It's the

(00:02):
Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on gold Sport.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Well, it took cricket now and the black Caps says
you've probably heard this morning of fall and short of
defending two hundred and nine in their second One Day
International against Sri Lanka to lose their three match series.
On game remaining, I think caselmends with an unbeaten seventy
four has led the host to a three wicket victory,
chasing down that two hundred and ten target with six

(00:27):
balls to spare in a reduced forty seven over contest.
Michael brace Willough finished with bowling figures of four wickets
for thirty six, joining us on the show this morning
to talk all things cricket. Host of On the Front
Foot with Jeremy Coney, Ryan Model Mornings. You very well.
Thank you. So imagine you were up all night watching

(00:48):
the action this morning. How many runs do you think
the black Caps were short of today?

Speaker 1 (00:54):
Well, I suppose when you look at it, down of
the last four bulls, though probably only about ten short.
In your mind. It was a one day game and
they just got over two hundred. It was quite difficult
to beat on. It seemed there was no one ever
really able to take the initiative when you look at
the fact that Chriss wl Mendez, who's a powerful striker
of the ball, bet at one hundred and two balls,

(01:16):
and of course Mark Chapman was the best of the
New zerlders. His Mitch Hayes batting were the only turnings
of real notes in the New Zealand side. It shows
the difficulty of the batting in Pala. Kelly, I thought
you pretty well to dependent when you look at the
bowling effort, and Bracewell again just started to put his

(01:39):
name forward again for a selection in other forms of
the game four thirty six, and you know, we saw
a general performance that it was probably a bit unlucky
in the end result to miss out.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
I guess we've got to remember it is a fairly
young and inexperienced squad, isn't it really? A lot of
the keep players are back home.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
Yeah, well that's the point. I mean, there's a meaningless
series really from that point of view. And I would
have expected the like particularly the likes of Smith and
others who and young as well, others who are preparing
for a Test mat Susy and Stingland would have been
better off here at home playing domestic first class cricket,

(02:23):
as other players are doing at the moment, those who
played on the tour to India and Cherlanka. So yeah,
it is an experience. It's looking at a few more players.
But you know, also some of those players who are
there have been around the white ball team for quite
some time. Chapman is generally a part of that side,

(02:44):
Phillips of courses, part of every side. Now he seems
to get the player in all those games. Sodie Duffy
has been away on many of these tourist. Tim Robinson
is starting to develop his sort of career, so you
know there's a little bit of experience in terms of
white ball cricket there for some of these players. It just,
you know, it seems to me that it's an unnecessary

(03:07):
tournament to be at this time of the year. We've
got our own domestic game that we should be fostering.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Very good point indeed. All right, So last Friday, Tim
Southey announced that his Test career is set to end
after the three Mex series against England. The beginnings on
November twenty eighth in christ Church. I think he's going
to wrap up his career on what will be his
home ground in Hamilton on December fourteenth to eighteenth. I
mean he's contributed a lot over the years, hasn't he.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
Oh, he's been a wonderful contributor to his career. He
just looked at the things that he's achieved along the way,
the work at hall that he's got, he's got more
workers than any other news in international cricket. He's played
a significant role in various forms of the game. I
remember back to the seven lookts he took against England
and the World Cup at the West Back Stadium when

(03:55):
he was one of the star performers. I mean he
has just been a major tributor and a consistent contributor,
and I suppose it's time to face reality for him.
I've obviously seen the writing on the wall and he
deserves to have a send off. He's probably getting a
slightly you've got to send off and might have been
the case with Neil Wagner who just got to get

(04:16):
to the press conference without really having much play time.
But you can already name the team for the match
in Hamilton. Cadule you can name one of those. He's
going to be playing in Hamilton terms.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Yeah, yeah, absolutely and talking about the England series. Also
on Friday, the team was named return of Kin Williamson.
So obviously he's over his is it a groin injury?

Speaker 1 (04:42):
Yeah, well he gets a chance to play some cricket
for his plate chield side and obviously they see him
fit and ready to go. The Project Shield matters of course,
will just test out its fitness issues. When it comes
to squad, I mean it's a very good, well balanced squad.

(05:04):
There are no real surprises there. They've included Nathan Smith,
who's going to be a player of the future. They
could have looked at somebody like Duffy, They could have
looked at Bracewall to bring into that squad, but they
have got the best squad available. They're real challenges the
eleven they are going to put on the park in
each Test match because it's very hard to leave idiot
those players out, and particularly what they're going to do

(05:26):
around at the battic with will Young, who was the
star of the show and player of the series against India,
whether he will be included in the top six, you've
got to but that's going to hold the balance of
the side the way I see it anyway, I.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
Think the thing is, I mean, you know they're coming
off that success in India, but it is it's going
to be a totally different story back home here in
New Zealand against against England. Can you see us beating
winning the series? Oh?

Speaker 1 (05:54):
I can. Yeah. It was interesting talking to BBC commentator
Jonathan Agnew in last week's that he said that England
come here as second favorites. Well for an Englishman to
say that when they've been trying to rule the world
of cricket. Their performance in Pakistan was very ordinary. They've
got to be adaptable to conditions and you know McCallum

(06:17):
will know what they're going to face here. Many of
our players have come back from that Indian series and
not really been able to get into the rhythm of
the longer form game. They're all having their innings in
domestic cricket. Lake and Tom Blundell got a sixty odd
last week, but using the time well to develop and

(06:38):
I think that at home we beat them in Wellington
that close game last time, we've got a chance of
we're going to win all three if we want to
put ourselves forward to get into the World Test Championship Final.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
Yeah. So, I mean there's only two weeks to go, really,
isn't it. Twenty eighth to December. It all starts in
christ Church.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
Yeah, and they'll be in the country before we know.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Yeah, alute. And then following up from that, it's actually
a busy summer of cricket for the black Caps as
Sri Lanka in a T twenty series, in an ODI
series and then Pakistani here for a T twenty series.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
Yeah, and certainly not Test cricket SS. But I suppose
they've had a fair diet of Test cricket up till
the Christmas stage, and that may well be the way
cricket in New Zealand is going to have to accept
things over the next few years with the increasing number
of white ball tournaments. They've got the Champions Trophy where
that's going to be staged. It's supposed to be in Pakistan,

(07:31):
but India not wanting to go there, so there could
be changes a foot when it comes to that. There's
still a lot of cricket for the black Caps to play,
but of course the period up to Christmas is the
one that we're most interested in, and that's the Test matches.
Threw them against England.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
As you said, plunket shield crickets under. Have you had
much of a chance to sort of cast your eye
over any of the matches.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
Yeah, well I saw the Norkland game last week. That's
the first round of matches being played, another round starting
today and not a lot to be seen from it. Yes,
there was some outstanding performances. I mean some of the
outstanding individual achievers through the last week have been Logan
van Beet for his effort for Wellington, and I've got

(08:17):
to put in a word too for the women's game
with Frankie McKay because of the top scorer in the
women's game, top run getter, just shows how longevity and
consistent performance for one particular side can deliver you the rewards,
and she's been an outstanding contributor. But I think this

(08:37):
round of games will be the real test for those
who are in the Test Mets side in terms of
being able to get some Fumkin Williamson will be watching
with a lot of interest to see what he's able
to do, and Ruchian Rovendro, who had a bit of
a failure with the bat, but we know what he's
capable of, so I'm sure that the challenges out there
for those players who are going to be playing in

(08:57):
the Test series.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
Yeah, absolutely. Frank McKay five thousand, one hundred and fifty
two runs pretty impressive. Well, it's nice to catch up mate,
have a good week and you too. Thank you. Brian
