An even opening day in the first Sri Lanka-New Zealand cricket test at Galle.

The hosts are 302 for seven.

Number five Kamindu Mendis posted 114 on a pitch that contained more venom than some expected in what are traditionally spin-friendly conditions.

Will O'Rourke returned the best bowling figures for the Black Caps, taking three for 54 from 17 overs, as well as pinging Angelo Mathews who he had caught behind for 36.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the cricket field to the cow shed. It's the
Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Well, finally, Broan Models are relieve man he could sit
back in his favorite armchair and watch cricket, Black Caps
and Tri Lanka. They got this series underway yesterday afternoon
last night, Tri Lanka winning the toss and choosing to
bat finishing the day and I'm surprised to the score
three hundred and two for seven. Joining us on the show

(00:27):
this morning Man for the Front Foot Podcast, Row Model
morning was.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
Yes, I probably should have gone to bed at tea
and then I wouldn't have had to put up with
the final session which really destroyed my faith in the
New Zealand side to some extent. But it was good
to see some cricket and Test cricket being played. Unfortunately
New Zealand just ran out of puff for the final
session and Sri Lanka have got a commanding position three

(00:55):
hundred and two for seven.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Yeah, it that's a very very strong position. But as
you said, the first couple of session we had them
at four for one hundred and six. Things to Will O'Rourke, mainly,
do you think that Saudi and co. Will be disappointed
with how the day ended up.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Yeah, I think they've got to be. But I think
those things sort of happened when you're playing in hot
conditions like they are, and it looked as though it
was reasonably hot over there. I didn't see the temperature.
They would have been disappointed by that final session. The
bowling plan went to pieces, and that happens that the
ball gets soft and you can't do much with it.

(01:31):
But they didn't seem to have a bowling plan that
was able to cope with a batsman who's in pretty
good touch. This guy Comindu is obviously a very good
player and he was hard to get rid of. It
was aj S Mattel that got him out in the end,
and it was a rather unusual dismissal. It bit and

(01:56):
jumps at the batsman, He got the glove to it,
went over to keep his head. Mitchell dived in, took
a good catch and they got rid of him. But
you know, it was it was hard going for them,
as you say one hundred and six or four, when
Dan and Jay at the Silver went out and then
Matthew's out just before tea one hundred and seventy eight

(02:17):
for five and that was due to again the bowling
of a Rock who really is an outstanding prospect. I
think he found it pretty tough late in the day
in the final session with the new ball, he'll be
refreshed and be needing to get rid of their last
batsman pretty quickly, which they should do. But they're looking

(02:38):
at a tough times because batting is not going to
get easy on this pitch. The ball is turning and
it did pop out of some dust a footmark that
was made by a rock to get rid of Kamindu.
But they'll be pretty disappointed the way first, after what

(02:59):
was a promising start in two sessions, were.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
You surprised with how little luckow spinners had out there?

Speaker 1 (03:07):
No, not really. I think that to some extent they
didn't really create enough opportunities. They didn't get enough pressure applied,
and the riagu and batsman knew how to handle the conditions,
you know, particularly Kimindu and of course Matthews with his

(03:29):
score of thirty six. But then there was the other
Mendus who got fifty and they put on in the
final session. I think it was about one hundred and
thirty one hundred and forty runs and that was the
tiring stage and I'm not sure in the end result
they probably had quite the right balance in terms of

(03:51):
the attack. I think they probably needed another seama. They
had spinners in the form of Raverndra and Mitchell who
are not Mitchell Phillips who was the best of the
spin bowlers, and Santa or perhaps Ags might well have
been replaced by Henry. I'm surprised that Henry was not included.

(04:15):
He's still one of our leading fast bowlers and an
extra seema might have done the job. Spinners are going
to play an important role and they will win Sherivenka
bat Bowl to our batsman and it's going to be
it's going to be tough. But I think New Zealand
just needed that other seema. Easy to be wise after

(04:38):
the event, but you know, when you've got so many
people who can spin the ball of Vendra, Phillips, Center
and AJZ, the extra seema might have been different because
I think they're going to have to look after a rope.
We're not going to want to bowl him into the ground.
He's a trump to my mind. I'm impressed by the

(05:02):
way he bowlved that fist, but he was a little expensive,
but boy, he was getting the ball to bounce, and
that's something you're going to get from a player of
his height and he was able to do that. And
he was also able to swing the ball in a
bit like Chris Martin used to do with the right
armor over the wicket, and he caused their top order

(05:25):
real concern. He's a man in the making for us,
and I think it was pretty evident when he played
last year, the Test matches that he did play and
he looked potentially a very good player. Well he's just
come out and done it again and you know, three
for fifty four. In the end results it's just three
runs and over. That's not too bad for a player

(05:48):
in conditions that supposedly aren't supposed to help fast bothers.
But you know, mark him down. He's a player of
the future orock.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Yeah. Absolutely, And do you think the Black cass maybe
lacked a little bit of you know, test match experience.
I mean didn't get any play when they were supposed
to play against Afghanistan, whereas the shrill Angas have come
up a tour of tour of England, so that kind
of you know, up with the play so to speak.
Do you think the Black Caps lacking a wee bit there?

Speaker 1 (06:15):
Yes, they were, and I think that was evident. You know,
there was some untidy work in the field at times.
There were four overthrows that you know, you don't want
to give any batsman four overthrows and it was a
throw at the stumps that was probably not necessary. But
you know, those are the things that you sort through
when you have a debrief about how you go about

(06:37):
the job. But I think that they just weren't in
test match rhythm and I think that showed in the bowlers,
and it showed with the spin bowlers. You know, the
longer they play, the more likely they are to get
that kind of Test match rhythm and that that is
quite evident. And that was part of the final session

(06:59):
as well. You know, they were boling both sides of
the park and they are being picked off with the
players that were playing the sweepstroke and getting a lot
of runs from it because the ball wasn't directed in
good areas. So you know, all those things have to
be sharpened up and that will be a hard job
for the bowling coach, Jacob Orem to get his bowlers

(07:20):
to get into that kind of rhythm that they need.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
I've got to say, what a wonderful venue. There's some
great shots above. Have you been there?

Speaker 1 (07:29):
Yeah? I love it down there. It's a wonderful place.
I've been there quite a number of times. I've stayed
at the hotel that the team is staying at. The
it's just up the road. It's called the Lighthouse. And
on the last tour, I actually stayed about thirty k's
south of Gaul at a place called Weiller Gama because

(07:49):
it was the only place I could get some decent accommodation.
But it is it's a delightful place. The Gaul fought
in that Gaul area is a lovely tourist desk nation
that it's one out of the box for me. I
love the Gaul and playing at that ground.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
Yeah, sort of looking at those images, maybe think chit
would mind going there for a little bit of a holiday.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
Yeah. A lot of people, do you know, they choose
there and places just a little bit north. It's very
much a scenic place which has become popular with overseas tourists.
Delightful place.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
Okay, so what happens today, what happens on day two?

Speaker 1 (08:26):
Onds They dismissed for three hundred and two. The last
three weeks have taken in the first day over it
will be a hat trick for O'Rourke and then and
then New Zealand have got to bat and they've got
to bat well. That is the problem. They've got to
do well. They're going to be betting forth if things
go according to plan in this game, and batting last

(08:49):
in those conditions against the espin this is going to
be difficult. So they've got to bat long as much
as they can and get as close as they can
to the table because they don't want to be conceding
a run's advantage to Sri Lanka in those conditions. We've
got the batsman that can do it. But whether they're

(09:09):
in again, that's sort of rhythm we're talking about. Match
Play is very important as you see it, but you know,
New Zealand have got to bat and bat well.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
Day two, four o'clock this afternoon. Brian Model joining us.
Thanks wad enjoy go and get a rest now.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
I'm going great to sleep.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
Good boy. Sorry to wake you up of course. The
