Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the rugby field to the rotary shed. It's the
Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport Talking.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Cricket Now in Sri Lanka, as you would have heard,
have won the opening One Day Cricket International against New
Zealand at don Buller by forty five runs while the
Duckworth Lewis method the visitors. They finished on one seventy
five for nine chasing and adjusted to twenty one from
twenty seven overs. Will Young Tim Robinson put on the
opening stand of eighty eight before the order disintegrated really

(00:29):
collapsed earlier. The hosts scored three hundred and twenty four
for five from forty nine point two overs. Tim Robinson,
Mitche Nathan Smith made their ODI debutes, joining us on
the show this morning. Former black Cap North Otago Sparks
coach is now Otago Sparks coach Craig coming morning, Craig area,
k Hey, Yank, very very well, thank you. What do

(00:51):
you make of that result from the black Caps this morning?

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Oh just shows the old cricket train goes funny, isn't it.
You know we're three, you know, we're playing test matches.
We're in India and then next to you know, we're
in Sri Lanka, but half the team BK also back
here in New zeal I'm playing first class cricket, but
we've got a one day series. We've just had a
T twenty series. But yeah, I suppose I'll be very
disappointed with the ball because you know, giving up over

(01:16):
three hundred, it just made the batting chase really tough
and you know with rain and what are they needing
eight and a half and over for twenty seven overs?
But not easy at all. But after good start, will
Young continuing to impress and show that he's an all
round cricketer. Good to see Robinson get some get some
runs as well. You know, he can hit the ball
very very hard and this is pretty new experience for him.

(01:38):
But also when you see people at Nathan Smith getting
an opportunity to bek this guy is a really, really
skilled quality cricketer. Would not be surprised to see his
name in the squad for the England series as potentially
the all rounder. You know we talk about you know
who's going to play. I think he'll get well, fingers crossed.
I'd like to see him get picked for that Test
thing batting that eight position and being able to bowl

(01:59):
see so and obviously personally delighted to see Jacob Duffy.
I think he got three wickets up top and bold
very economically and did a great job. So he's been
waiting a long time to get the ball in hand again.
And you know, again someone who in the next couple
of years i'd like to see playing a lot more
for New Zealand. So yet one of those ones where
you probably set back in the change room and just
sort of strike your shoulders and go, yeah, we didn't

(02:20):
bowl well enough. It meant we had to chase too
many and you know, conditions were tough, So let's just
move on to the next one.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
Yeah, and they've got a couple more to go to,
haven't they. I mean it's a chance, just as you mentioned,
try younger players, isn't it bringing new stock into the team.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
And that's one of the one of the beauties is
that we do have the opportunity to develop on the
international stage. And normally you're not talking about development all
the time with the black Caps and you shouldn't be.
But with the way the schedules are BK and the
amount of cricket we play, you do get great opportunities.
And one thing New Zealand Cricket of shah and they
always plan these things pretty well. And that's one thing

(02:56):
you know. I know Gary Steed's been under a bit
of heat he bounced back in India obviously to those credits.
But one of the things they are very good at
is planning and you know, getting guys opportunity. Folks is
over there he played the one and the T twenty. Yep,
you now see Nathan Smith getting an opportunity. Hey has
been moved up into that batting spot. We could keep
a batting spot. So yeah, it's quietly yet just give

(03:17):
people opportunities and what they do became. You know what
it's like in sport where they come back now they're
motivated because they've had a little taste. They also know
what experience of playing in a subcontinents like, so when
they come back to a domestic cricket they're a little
bit more driven. They've got a little bit more experience
and it just left the standard all around. So you know,
while I'm not really going to remember the series, you

(03:39):
know it comes to the memory bank. From a performance
point of view, these sort of things are really important
from a cricket point of view for news other cricket.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
All right, he let's change tech now and talk about
the Hallie Burton Johnson Shield getting underway this weekend. Now
you're in charge. This is for women's cricket. You're in
charge of the Otago Sparks defending champions. How's your side
looking ahead to defend their title?

Speaker 1 (04:00):
Part? They've just been the gym, BK. They're all in
the coffee shop having a coffee. Yeh know, they've worked
really hard. They've had a massive preseason. Actually, they all
want to start way too early, BK. And I'm when
I say early, they sort of want to start training
in May when it comes to betting and bowling, and
I've got to sort of hold them back a little
bit actually, But that's pretty good. We've just had a

(04:21):
little bit of weather that probably interrupted a few games
that had an ideal world would be great. But when
I took over the side, what four years ago, the
first time we played a game, we didn't have a
we didn't even have any preseason game. So you know,
we're evolving nicely. That the girls have worked exceptionally hard.
They've been training the house and we've overtrained, BK. Actually
we're ready to play. You know, it's likely you can

(04:43):
only you know, you can go around the track as
many times as you want and practice, but you need
to get out into the Grand prixed actually understand what
you're doing. So we're ready to go. We're looking forward
to it. So big year. We've got the majority of
our white foods are going to be available after that
World Cup win and play most of the HBJ and
also the Super Smash. So it's great to have the
international players back into the domestic scene. And yeah, I

(05:05):
think people will be really not surprised, but really pleased
to see the team of the cricket they're going to
see this year. I think we're going to go up
a step, which is fantastic.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
The HBJ. You referred to it as the HBJ, do you.
I mean that's competed for since around the mid thirties,
isn't it.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
It's too big longer words for me, BKA. You know,
I'm going to get my sixty five words in a minute.
And if I say Halle Burns Johnson, it's Cloe.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
The HbA we call it. So yeah, we've got us
sitting in the office. Still we've enjoyed looking at it
over the winter, and you know, I suppose tomorrow we
fly away and now it's an opportunity again. Because I
always I never talk about winning competitions. I talk about
let's go out and let's do the things that we
want to do really well, and that that takes care
of itself. And you need a bit of luck, You

(05:50):
need a bit of things to go in your way,
and weathers obviously a big part of that too. I mean,
if you get a couple of games ranged out, you
can miss out. We don't have unlike the men who
played their Ford Trophy. If you overcome their top three
go into the playoffs, whereas in the in the hPG,
it's only a final for us. So you know, it's
pretty cutthroat. And two years ago, I remember if we
had a third place playoff, every team was in the mix.

(06:14):
But unfortunately at the moment we only have a final.
We don't have a two v three to go to
the finals. So yep, you need things to go your way.
But also I just want to see how players go
out and play some good cricket, show that they've improved,
show that they're developed, and all say some fun.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
You're up against? Is it Canterbury this weekend?

Speaker 1 (06:30):
Yeah? Up to the up against the neighbors yep, so
always look forward to that. We're up at ring Your
actually BK, so it's the most lovely ground out at
Main Power over there, so we'll go out and play
them there and yet look forward to taking on the
Red and Blacks is always good fun.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
How much of a boost do you think that the
T twenty World Cup win will have with getting the
next generation involved in the game, Craig.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
I hope a lot. You can't, just as we've seen
an other sports beech and I think I think the football,
you can't just sit back and say that's the most
important thing, because we're still going to have some really
good structures and things in place to allow especially the
young girls to want to come along. And then we've
still got to deliver a quality product because the White

(07:15):
Ferns winning the World Cup doesn't mean a young girl's
going to turn up on the park and enjoy her experience.
So we've got to make sure whatever we're doing, we've
got things in place. But then when they turn out,
they have a positive experience because we need them to
come back and come back and come back. So yeah,
we all hope that it's going to be a real
big line of the stand for us to say, yes,
participation's going up, but we need to make sure we

(07:38):
do a whole lot of things right and then we
also make sure there's a positive experience. But you know,
it's a start. It's better than any minute marketing campaign
vacated the market has come up with, isn't it? You know?
But again it's as you know, and I mean you
think of Steven Adams, you think of even Liam Lawson. Now,
so Liam Lawson doing a great job. I'm now a

(07:58):
Formula one fan. Part of it matters walk with you
and you got me into it and I follow things
and you know, but just because Liam Lawson's driving, it
might inspire a lot of young boys and girls out
there to want to drive cars. But they've got to
have the options to be able to go right where
I go and then what do I do. The one
thing we do now about driving cars is if you
get in the car and you get the opportunity, you're

(08:18):
probably going to enjoy it, especially if you're trying to
go fast.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
Oh absolutely, hey, and you personally Craig, your youngest son,
Zach made his first class our debut for Otago in
the first up. Plankert cheered loss. I'm sorry to say
to see how proud of a moment for you was?
Was that getting another a son into that game?

Speaker 1 (08:38):
Yeah it was very Yeah it was. You know me,
I don't talk a lot about that side of you know,
I don't want to put pressure on my kids, but no,
to have both your sons have been played now for
a Tago and Zach got his opportunity to make his debut.
He's a league spin bowler. As betting we didn't go
quite as well as he would like, but he bowled
really well as a league spinner. So yeah, to see

(09:00):
him get that, I sort of said to him, he's
watched the Tiger Vaults BK for nineteen years, which is
actually literally true because before he turned one, he was
already on the sidelines at UNI over watching me play.
But yeah, it's But also I hate at BCA as
well because I know how tough cricketers the hell of
the proficion take up. So and I always say to
my kids that, you know, I'm never proud of them

(09:22):
because of performing all the way they perform. I'm proud
of who they are and people who get to know
Zach or No, he's not only a good cricketer, but
he's a pretty pretty cool gw man. And then my
other son Jacob. You hopefully they get to play together.
He just had an eye operation. Actually, BK hit a
ketterack and he's been playing cricket for eighteen months blind
and has left eye so not the easiest thing to
do as an opening better So hopefully he's on the recover. Well,

(09:44):
he's on the recovery. He played a game got one
hundred actually, so you know it's it's buddy hard getting
up when they're both playing BK because they're the life
scoring Now you can follow it and just absolutely ruined you.
You're better off not knowing and there's fighting out at
the end of the day with a phone call. But no,
now with all this technology, follow it and it just
it just turns you the bits.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
Yeah, it probably does too, will you please that probably
didn't say, hey we want to be motor racing drivers
and turn to Formula one because you be broke down mate.

Speaker 1 (10:11):
I still am BK, but you're right, probably not as
broke as broke as you could be. But no, yeah,
that's you know, as we all know, when you've got kids,
you just want them to be able to live their
dreams and enjoy their lives, and you know, that's the
most important thing. And cricket is a tough game, we
all know that, but it's also a very special game,
so you know, really that's a that's a nice.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
Thing to have. Yet, good on your Craig, good luck
with the HBJ and we'll talk again soon mate. Well done,
Thanks thank you for coming joining us here on Gold
Sport and the Country Small Breakfast, talking a bit of crickets.
We'll give away the Celebration pack next on the Country
Sport
