Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're talking the French Open now on the show, and
it is all over on the courts of Roland Garris
gives me great pleasure to bring in multi media Mike Start,
Craig Gabriel, Bonjo, Craig.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Ran, good to be with you. Yeah, it's all done
and dusted and the title has been won by Carlos
Alcaraz in five sets of Alexander Zverev.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
And that was a game that went almost well, I
think about four hours twenty minutes. So he put up
a fight, didn't he, Yoka zerub Zverev.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Yeah, as you would expect him to do when it's
a major final like the French Open. So but he
admitted that in the fourth set, which Alciaz won six ' one,
he said, this game just left him. He said he
lost focus. He couldn't understand why. He says, he's not
somebody that normally gets tired or gets cramped or anything
like that, but he just lost focus, and that, you know,
(00:56):
totally opened the door for al Karaz, who was down
two sets to one before that fourth set, got back
on board and then rolled on the fifth, sixth, sixth
to two. So yeah, I mean it was an amazing
performance from our Kiraz, It really was. Zverev was full
of praise for him, and he's now won major titles
(01:20):
on three different surfaces. He's the seventh man in the
open ear to do that, but the difference is he's
the youngest one to do it. He's just turned twenty
one a month ago.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
Yeah, that's the amazing actually, And on all three surfaces,
is the one that he shines, do you think or
is he pretty gone on all of them?
Speaker 2 (01:40):
He's well, he's won Wimbledon on grass, He's won the
US Open on hard court, and now he's run the
French Open on clay. But I would say that clay
is really his prime surface. But as you can see,
he can win, play and win and is comfortable on
all the surfaces.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
The changing of the god, really do you think, Oh.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
We've I think we've been seeing that in more recent times.
You know, we've got we're going to have a new
world number one. Tomorrow when the official rankings come out,
Janick Sinna and Alcoraz will move back to two. Djokovic
is at three, and Alexander Zverev will come in at
four and Daniel Mete at five. So yeah, it's great
(02:25):
to see the younger ones really carrying that banner now.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
Absolutely right. Let's move to the women's side of things now,
And it was a day or two ago, but I
Sweetik has dominated Jasmin and Paulini. What six two sixty
one made it look easy? Your third consecutive French Open.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
Yeah, yeah, and fourth overall it lasted sixty eight minutes.
I did some checking and it's it was the most
one sided final since two thousand and seven. I think
it was so. Yeah, Schriantek was just too impressive, and
I think, just me, Paulini was pretty overwhelmed by the
(03:02):
whole situation. She gave it everything she had and she
I think she had a good time in one sense,
because she's somebody who just appreciates, you know this, what
she's achieving. She's got a smile on her face, she's
got a lovely disposition, and it was unfortunate for her.
She was also in the women's doubles final and she
(03:23):
lost that as well today. So while it's been a
terrific tournament for her, it's been a disappointing weekend.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
She'd be a nine to look out for in the future, though,
wouldn't she?
Speaker 2 (03:34):
Ah look, I'm not She's twenty eight and yeah, look
that's not old obviously, but in tennis terms, she's maturing
a little bit later. But yeah, look, I think we'll
see her around. Whether she gets to a Wimbledon final
weekend or US Open, I'm not so sure about that.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
Well, Craig, we appreciate you getting up staying up late
for to talk to us here in New Zealand. I
guess you can have a break now and then it'll
be Wimbledon.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Well, yeah, Wimbledon is less than a month away, but
I dare say it's not a break over the next
couple of weeks. I've got an early flight in the
morning to go to Bucharest. I'm going to be sitting
down with a very famous tennis player over there, and
then we get back out of the grass with Queens,
et cetera, and leading to Wimbledon.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
Fantastic. Well, thank you very very much, and we'll hear
from you in Wimbledon is own. Thanks so much, Craig Auvoir.
