Almost a quarter past seven here on the Country Sport Breakfast,

about the first semi finalist on the women's side.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
Being found Emma Navarro who's had a breakout year this
year and she's defeated Pala Badosa six two seventy five,
but also was up five to one in the second
set when Navarro came back and ended up winning that
in straight sets. So she's going to hit the top
ten as well once this tournament is done. And and yeah,

what I find interesting is this the first time she's
reached the quarters of one of the majors and now
she's through to the semifinals, whereas her countrywoman Jessica Pagola
has been around for a number of years, has never
gone past the quarterfinal stage. And today she will be
or tonight, sorry tomorrow, I should say, she will be

playing her seventh quarterfinal at the Majors, So we'll see
if she gets through for the first time. But full
marks to Emma Novara.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
Currently on the mean side, one of the American host
Tayler Fritz. He leads, I think Alexander Via is one
set and then what's the latest on that one?

Speaker 1 (01:38):
Yeah, that's on right now watching that at the moment.
He won the first set seven to six on a tiebreak,
seven points to two, after having I think it was
three set points in the bulk at the mid part
of the of that first set. So Taylor Fritz upper
set and it's three two on serve and the second
set is there now three or Fritz is just hell serve.

Interesting part of this is that this is their tenth meeting.
Zverev has got a five to four career head to
head advantage, and it was Fritz who beat Zverev at
Wimbledon just a couple of months ago as well. So
we'll see how this one pans out, but at the
moment it's Fritz slightly ahead, and no.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
Doubt the New York crowd will be absolutely loving their
American player out there.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Oh absolutely, I mean, you know, that'll put them through
to the semi finals, or with whoever wins, we'll go
through the semis and we'll play the winner of the
match between Grigord Dimitrov and France Tier four. So I
can pretty safely say that the locals will be cheering
for an all American semi final and the fingers crossed
for them for Francis tiafour to play Taylor Fritz and

those two guys are very very close friends as well.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
What else do we have to look forward to today
or tonight your time as well.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
Yeah, so this will be the this is very that
is the last of the day session. Tonight, on the
night session, we've got to repeat of the Australian Open Final,
first up with Arena Sablenka taking on Jiang Qinuen of China,
who won the gold medal just a few weeks ago.
And after that it will be the match between Francis

Tiafo and Grigor Dimitrov and it's Grigor who leads that
series three to one. But you know, I made that
point to Alex Dimino yesterday about going in against Jack
Draper tomorrow with the three love advantages. Look, these things,
what's happened in the past is not going to be
necessarily a reflection on what you're going to be playing.

And every match is different, so yeah, there's a point
in that. But also when you've got a pretty solid
record over an opponent that gives you extra confidence, you'll.

Seriously? So, I mean, we've had an amazing tournament. We
started the US Open with twenty players in singles, the
men's and women's singles, so it's it's an incredibly successful
event for the Australians.

Yeah, what is it? What do you put that down to?
Elsie Crickets. It seems to be in a good state,
doesn't it.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
Yeah, look at Trubby, the meat Pies, yea, the Kangaroobergers.
Yeah yeah, yeah. There were a couple of guys in
the standiaes today that I noticed wearing baggy greens. But yeah,
I don't think they were real. I think they were
fake ones.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
So the mean side of the draw, it's really open.
Who are you picking to win it overall? On the weekend?

Speaker 1 (04:34):
Yeah, Look, it has been a finalist here before the
COVID year final that he lost. It was an incredible
match and it was such a shame there was nobody
to watch it in the stands. Dominique team ended up
beatings there in that final, and then you look on
the other side, you got the world number one still
very much in focus at jan Nick Sinner, and he's

playing the only man left who has won a championship
up at the US Open, Daniel Medvedev. Look, I don't
know what to suggest. I think the winner will probably
come from that Sinner Medvedev match, as much as I'd
like to say, Alex And as long as you're the
way I look at it, as long as you're in
the drawer, you've got a chance to win. Absolutely.
