Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sport, the Latest from the Land and just great Rock.
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport,
your home of live commentary.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
I Am just a poor boy or my story seldom
too squad lisistance through a pocket full of such primisuns
all lies and Jess the Man.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
We're talking boxing now on the show and the Big
One Tomorrow night Viaduct event sent a three time world
title challenger, Tommy Copenci is going to face Rise and
Key we star David Nika Tomorrow a night. David joins
us this morning. David, good morning, good morning, good morning.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Thank you for having me on Broin.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Oh absolute pleasure. Mate. Took us through the last couple
of weeks going from fighting Blake Caparello to you know,
a quick change Tommy Copenci. Now, how difficult is it
been to get ready for a new fighter on such
short notice.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
Truthfully, he's actually a very similar opponent. He's still a
he's still a South Bass, which means a left handed fighter.
He's about the same age, similar record. The biggest difference
is that where Blake Capparello failed at the top level
against world champions, he lost and Tommy Carpenci has has
beaten a former world champion and Chad Dawson one of
(01:22):
my favorite fighters at that at that date. But yeah,
he's a He's a stepping stone for me and an
opportunity to to show my show, my development and also
take a step step ahead in terms of you know,
tougher competition.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
It's been a busy build up for you. I know
you've you've had rounds of media interviews, the face off
and so on. Do you like sort of the build
up to the fight?
Speaker 3 (01:47):
Yeah, it's it is busy. I try to take it
in my stride. It's just you know, it does get
a little bit difficult. I'm a little bit of a
homebody now. I've I really appreciate my my quiet time
back in rural Queensland, and so obviously coming back and
being the star of the show is a bit of
a bit of a shock to the system.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
Do you have to lose much weight for the fight
tomorrow night?
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Yes, Yeah, it's it's it's been. It's been difficult. I've
been trying to balance my my caffeine intake and and
my my how much the scales are changing. So it's
been it's been a fine balancing act. But I'm getting
through all this media work and no, I'm excited to
excited to show up, come, come tomorrow night, and you know,
put on a show for everybody.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
David, you're nine bouts into your career a surprise fighter.
How have you enjoyed it so far?
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Oh, it's it's an It's been an amazing journey. And
obviously spending time with with Joseph Parker over and Morecambe
and the and the Furies was it was an invaluable experience.
You know, I learned the art of of combat, the
art of fighting. You know that there are there are
a fighting race over there. And you know, I've always
competed as an amateur boxer. Now I've I've you know,
(02:56):
learned the art of you know, survival in the ring.
And uh and I can't wait to show everybody what
I've been working on. I'm so blessed to have the
likes of Manuka Doctor behind me. They've basically taken all
the pressure off at home so I can keep focusing
on my boxing. Uh And and now we've got a
global broadcaster in design, which is DAZN dot com, because
(03:19):
without them, we can't show the rest of the world
what I've been cooking. Uh, And it's a it's a
huge opportunity obviously, to to put on in front of
you know, the good people of Auckland.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
Well, they'll be looking forward to the fight. You've walked
out for fights dressed is as Hercules as Batman, Optimist Prime,
even Kung Fu Panda. Can we expect something a little
different tomorrow night or those days over mate?
Speaker 3 (03:44):
It's a funny one. It's that those are all quite
nostalgic ideas. I'm coming to the realization now that I
have an opportunity to to actually be to be the superhero,
to to create my own superhero, like you know, Dave
the nice guy Nike. I'm hoping one day that they'll
make make action figures that can resemble something of myself,
(04:04):
you know what I mean. Yeah, So it's exciting, like
I'm going to keep it pretty clean this time, and
I want to I want to start building the idea
that I can be the superhero, you know, I can.
I can transcend boxing and be a positive influence for
our next generation.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
Fantastic You've been working full time under renowned Australian trainer
nol Noel Thornberry. What he brought out in you that
you didn't think you had.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
Well, it's interesting. He's he's been a really really positive influence,
but he's never tried to change my style. If if anything,
he's probably tried to encourage me to use my natural attributes,
which is actually more of an endurance based athlete I have.
You know, I started boxing coming off a short a
(04:54):
short athletics and cross country careers as a teenager, and
so I've kind of reverted back to someone my natural
advantages of being extremely fit and being a volume fighter,
being able to break guys down on the ring, and
now obviously moving into the pro game, you know, we
have up to twelve rounds to break guys down, and
that was something that I couldn't really express through through
(05:15):
amateur boxing. So I think efficiency is probably the biggest,
the biggest development and biggest improvement over the last couple
of years working with Noel, and it's it's coming through
and I feel like my last fight was a good
a good statement to make, and I'm hoping come Saturday night,
I'll be able to do the same and just keep
(05:36):
keep building momentum towards those world titles.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
And how good is it to have Joe Parker in
your corner. I mean, all his experience, that must make
a big difference.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
That's pretty cool, like to know that he's at the
height of his career and still transcending. He he has
always been a brother to me, and now I have
him as a as a promoter. So I feel very fortunate,
very lucky. I know he's spent all the rest of
us he's waking hours, you know, preparing for his next fight,
which I'm told it's going to be towards the end
(06:07):
of the year. So it's I feel very special that
he's you know, taking a sideway step to help me,
you know, project into into into the ranks, the top
ranks of Cruisewaight boxing.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
And what about you for your next fight or is
that too far ahead at the stage?
Speaker 3 (06:26):
If I could get on his next undercard, that'll be amazing.
I know he's I know he's been I know he's
been busy. I know he's got plans and the works,
and I want to back this fight up with hopefully
at least two more fights before the end of the year.
You know, it's it's been a little bit of a
slow start to the year and I think I just
really like to round it out with a couple of
(06:47):
good wins after this one.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
Well, David will wish you all the very very best
of like tomorrow night, out of Auckland, out of the
event center. Good luck mate, Cheers Brian Precid.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
It's no more than the company changes in the quiet
the railway.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
Station and David Nika joining us here on the show today.
That fight tomorrow night against Tommy Capenzi and of course
you can watch it on Zone. Well done to those
winners who scored themselves three months description to the Zone
that we've given away over the past past couple of months.
