Nieker is bringing back big time boxing to New Zealand.
He joins us on the show with a new promoter, David.
Good morning, welcome along, gooday, how are you mate? Very well?
(00:23):
Thank you? How are you doing? This is exciting for you?
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Oh it's huge.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
This is We're bringing big time boxing back to New Zealand.
Joe was the last person to do it in a
big way. And with Duco and him of course, and
my my own coach nol Thornbury promoting the show, We've
got a We've got an awesome, awesome lineup of.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
You know, entertainment to bring to to bring back to
New Zealand.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
Great having Joseph Parker in your corner as your new promoter.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
Yeah yeah, he's He's stepping into a new pair of boots.
So I'm excited to see see how he enjoys it,
because I want to. I want him to have fun,
and I think I think we're gonna have a lot
of fun these next let's say twelve weeks or however
long it is until the fight you've got.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
Yeah, we'll talk about that fight shortly. But you're doing
all your training. Your training is based out of Australia,
isn't it.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Yes, Yeah, training a little rural town called Gatton in Queensland.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
And what's that like? Living there and training there? I
love it.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
I love it.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
There's there's endless sun and we honestly have no distractions.
There's nothing going on in a small town like Gatton,
so I can really focus on the training.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
And obviously I'm a little bit closer to home than
I was in the in the UK when I was
training over there with with Joseph and Tyson Fury. So
really nice to be able to just jop back for
a few days and see the family, get some R
and R and get back to training.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
Your coach is Noel Thornbury. So what's he done to
your your style, your fighting? That's you know is going
to put you on the right track.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
Yeah, I think it's I've learned a lot more about
efficiency in the pro game, being efficient and you know,
not over exerting yourself when you've got twelve rounds in
front of you. It's so important and like it's so
easy to kind of drain your own battery. So for me,
not Knowle's taught me so much, so much about the sport,
(02:20):
but I really feel like.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
I'm adapting to this new new environment of pro boxing.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
What you build up being like, so far, how's your fitness,
I'll tell you what.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
My fitness is always good.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
But we're twelve weeks out, so I'm I'm the kind
of guy that were ripped here and bus so I've
had to take it easy the last the last few weeks.
I've actually got sick as soon as they got back
from Saudi, so I've been bedridden for two of the
last four weeks.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
How was that Saudi experience?
Speaker 2 (02:48):
I was incredible. It was incredible there the Saudi's treated
us like royalty. It was Yeah, really awesome experience.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
But once in a lifetime, I think, so to be
able to part of that was incredible. And yeah, just
looking forward to the next one and bringing bringing boxing
back to back to.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
New Zealand and what was it a fourth round knockout
of previously unbeaten German fighter So that was pretty good.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Yeah, yeah, it was.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
It was.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
It's another it's another scalp, but it's a it's a
small stepping stone on the way to that world titled dream.
So we're ranks fourteenth or fifteenth in the IBF now,
and we're looking to get this next bout sanctioned by
the WBO. Uh and then we just we just start
acting acting guys on that list to get to that
mandatory spot.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
So tell us about this big event that is coming
up at Auckland's Viaduct Event Center on September fourteenth.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
I well, basically this is this is the premiere boxing
event of twenty fourteen in New Zealand. So I'm really excited.
I know that it's going to be a huge night
of boxing. I'm gonna put my best foot forward and
give everybody show. I can't predict how the night's gonna go.
(04:04):
We still haven't revealed the undercard yet, so and I
actually don't know the full full lineup, but I can
I can promise you a lot.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
Of action and great Having Joseph Parker on your side
as well, he would have so much knowledge that he
can pass on to you.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
Oh Joe, Joe's been like a brother to me and
a mentor since since twenty twenty one since my pro day.
I was in camp with him before his fight with
Junior far So for me having him on my side,
and you know, no questions, there's never a dumb question
with Joe.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
I ask a lot of them.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
But he's been really really helpful in my kind of
development through the pro ranks because.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
This is really it's such a such a big step to.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
Move from amateur boxing to pro boxing, a lot more
than I thought it would be.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
But he's he's been awesome.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
He's been awesome, and now knowing that he's gonna be
there as and as actual title will be to you know,
like look after me in a lot of ways as awesome,
I feel.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Like I've got a real safety net.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
You know. Absolutely well, David, we wish you the very
very best of Like it's still a wee way out,
so all the best for training for that big night
at Auckland's Events Center in September.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Chairs Ryan appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
That's David Nico joining us love on the show today,
and of course it's being promoted now by the current
w b O heavyweight champion, Joseph Parker,
