Speaker 1 (00:00):
International rugby coverage on the Country Sport Breakfast is proudly
brought to you by Access Solutions, elevating you and your
business to a higher level. We're talking test rugby now
on the Country Sport Breakfast and the All Black Selectors
have rung in four changes to the side that lost
in Wellington, with Talmody, Williams, Rico, Joanni, Caleb Clark and

(00:21):
Will Jordan all starting in. Former captain Sam Kain there
as well joining us. The Man will be calling the
game tomorrow night from the Eden Park Elliot Smith, Morning.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Elliott, Happy Friday, Bak. Good to catch up.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Yeah, nice to catch up with you too. So I
actually thought there might have been one or two other
changes as well, but in a way they've been wee
bit cautious. What are your thoughts?

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Yeah, I thought there might have been as well. In fact,
I'm surprised that they haven't made a lot more changes.
This basically says to me, I think that Scott Robertson
wants these players to go out and rectify what they
did wrong last week and is trusting them to do so,
and doesn't want to be seen as a coach that
chops and changes necessarily week to week and is happy

(01:01):
to back these players in and trust them to deliver
again the week after defeat. But they're going to have
to be a lot better than they were at sky
Stadium tomorrow night at Eden Park if they're going to
get the victory. I thought perhaps a change to the
loose Ford treuer might be in the offing, some more
ball carrying, perhaps a what is the tt who doesn't
make the twenty three at all? Change at halfback could

(01:24):
have been there as well, and maybe some others to
the back line too, but have stuck with by and
large what they put out at sky Stadium. In fact,
the four pack wouldn't have been changed at all if
Ethan de Grout hadn't suffered a neck injury earlier in
the weekend been replaced by Tomighty Williams, So that would
have just led the back line with those three changes
so conservative I think from Scott Robertson and look, they

(01:48):
better work because otherwise they'll be further questions asked after
tomorrow night.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
Biggest surprise for me and maybe for you TJ Peranara
in the run on a lineup, so you know he
didn't have the best of games last Saturday.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Did he No, he certainly didn't. I thought he was very,
very sluggish at the base of the ruck. He was
indecisive with his kicking, took too long to get the
all blacks in the right areas of the park, and
you want that energy out of half back. He was
too ponderous for mine and I think there was a
definite argument to make the change to Cortez Ratama. Bring
him in this week and give him the Test start.

(02:21):
Now you know it's going to be a case by
case basis, but on the on t J. Peedinara, he's
not going to be there after this year. You've got
a very very good young replacement in Cortez Ratzama, who
isn't the finished product, sure, but he's growing as a
Test footballer week to week. I would have started him
this week. He could have brought t J Pedinara off
the bench. And I think the thing for me as

(02:41):
well is that t J. Pettinara has played seventy five
percent of his Test matches coming off the bench. He
was behind Aaron Smith for the majority of his career,
only played the matches really where Aaron Smith was injured
or rested. So for me, t J. Penanaro has always
been that finish half back and then too in the

(03:01):
twilight of his career, his test career put him into
start Test matches. I think they've got it the wrong
way around. I think he's your insurance policy off the
bench that you could bring on late in the game
to either to close the game out, to add a
different spark off the bench. That's what you get out
of t J. Pettinara, and I'm surprised that they've stuck

(03:22):
with him this week. It feels like a bit of
a last chance for TJ. Peterinara. Having said that, it's
another big ass to book Cortiz razamar In to start
against the spring Box in a couple of weeks time
in Johannesburg. So it's an intriguing selection one I don't
agree with. Look, t J Peteranara is going to have
to step it up tomorrow night at Eden Park.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
I'm a big fan boy of Sam Dowry and it's
good to see that he's back in there at Locke
as well. I'm impressed by his play.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
Yes I'm I I think he's taking his chances very
very well, remembering he wasn't even in the squad when
that was named at the start of July or end
of June for the three matches against England and the Fiji,
made his way in through injury cover then was named
for the Rugby Championship. Deserving of that spot came off

(04:08):
the bench of course in that Figi Test in San
Diego started last week, made every poster when I thought
he was excellent. Obviously scored a try, but his line
out work was superb great in the year, pinched a ball,
stole a line out late in the game. I think
he's really gone a long way to putting himself in
the All Blacks mix in the future. Remembering that there
are some players sidelined obviously at the moment, so that

(04:30):
is going to be have those players come back in.
But when they're going to select the squad for later
in the year and figuring things out, Sam Darry's name
for mine has to be right in the mix. So
looking forward to seeing how he goes tomorrow night. It's
a ground he knows obviously very very well in Eden
Park and hopefully he can continue to build on that
good performance at sky Stadium, because I thought he was

(04:51):
the best All Black on the Park last week in
a losing performance. Hopefully he can continue to deliver in
the All Blacks Jersey.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
New wing combination to Caleb Clark and Will Jordan moving
into starting roles.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
Yeah, this is intriguing to me. Look, I think Will
Jordan we probably thought he was going to come back
in once he had a bit of game time under
his belt returning from that shoulder injury. The question being
what position would he be in fullback or right wing.
I would expect him probably to see some time at
fullback at some point this year, but it's the horses
for courses and selection for this game and putting him

(05:26):
on the right wing giving him the opportunity there. His
ability to cut through off the wing is magnificent. He's
become world class at doing so over the last couple
of years. That allows Boat and Barrett to remain at
fullback and Cayler Clark just been knocking down the door
for opportunities. You know, scored a hat trick in his
last game out on Eden Park in the Super Rugby Final,
and Mark Talian I think maybe perhaps a little bit

(05:50):
hard done by has found it a little hard to
get into the last couple of games and Caleb Clarke.
We know what he can do with ball in hand.
Mark to Leer can add some impact off the bench.
All that that's a little curry as well because he
can only really cover left wing right wing doesn't have
that utility value from what they usually look to on
the bench. And severa Reese I think has just been
out of sorts in recent times, had a very good

(06:11):
first Test and to need him probably has played his
way out of the lineup. So we get to see
will Jordan tomorrow night and get him look forward to
him perhaps stamp because they were authority back on the
All Black side and.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
Sam Kine good insurance policy off the beaches, off the
bench as well, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Yeah, I know that we a few probably well, I'm
sure people will be happy to see him back out
for the All Blacks, but I'm sure they have plenty
of fans and they're a great start to the NPC season.
Might have thought maybe there's a chance they can be
bolstered by him this weekend, but not to be great
to see him back in the All Blacks Juesday. After
that long injury, Laft last played a professional game back
in January with the injury that he had which has

(06:48):
been incredibly frustrating for him. A couple of club games
at NPC pre season under his belt, we know what
he can still do. I mean there's that lingering feeling
around the World Cup final and the red card obviously there,
but we know what is capable of. It was only
you know, that game against Ireland the quarter final, the
best game of his All Blacks career that he managed

(07:09):
to turn out and put on the park, so we
know it is capable of. Different role for him, it's
the one he started out is All Blacks career and
when he was the understudy for Richie mccaury ends his career,
you know. And the twilet was screen not saying he'll
finish necessarily as a bench player, but he's going to
be off the bench this week and look, I think
he can add some merrial impact. I think that's what
they were missing last week, some leadership in the last

(07:31):
twenty looks forward to seeing what he can add tomorrow night.
But having said that, I would have liked to see
more from Wallace to TC. I think we touched on
it there before around the changes to the loose Ford trio.
He's a player that I think the All Blacks are
crying out for the ball carrying his ability there Surpris's
missile on the twenty three, but looking forward to seeing
Sam came back there.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
Thirty years since the All Blacks lost at Eden Park.
They damn will better not lose tomorrow night, that's for sure. Eliot.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
Have a good CHEERSBK, looking forward to it.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
Ellie Smith on commentary duty along with Van Strawn, and
of course we'll have a Poney on the sideline as well.
