Speaker 1 (00:00):
The country, sport breakfasts, weekly tea off golf coverage with
Crown Trade up to a new Crown forklift. Simply the best.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
I've turned for home. The one hundred and twenty fourth
US Golf Open. Where the leaders on the way and
it's very very tight. Two former champions leading the way,
twenty twenty champion Bryce and to Shamba and a winner
from twenty and eleven Rory McElroy, locked together joining us
on the show. Mister Major's grahame a guys, morning, Graham.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
Good morning, And it's certainly getting tired, isn't it? Nine
holes to go, and we've got a two way tie
on top of the leaderboard. You couldn't mask for more
than that.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
No, Absolutely a tournament golf. This is one hundred and
twenty fourth installment of the US Open. It's really offered everything, Graham,
hasn't it.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
Yeah, it certainly has. And when you look at the leaderboard,
it sort of brought the top players to the top
of the leaderboard at the right stage. You know, those
that couldn't handle it. I'm talking about defending champion and
world number one Scotty Scheffler. You know they both got
twelve over for the championship, so just couldn't handle the course.
(01:13):
But the shambo McElroy can't play great quality players up
there battling it out, and it's going to be a
test of nerves, that's for sure, because this course gives
you nothing.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
Yeah, when we spoke last week, you described how tough
this course is. I don't think I've ever seen greens
that challenging on a golf course.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
Yeah, that's what it's all about. I mean, that's pretty
fair off the tea fair ways wider than the normal
US Open, and the much heralded rough with this wygrass
they have there really hasn't been as penal as most
people thought it would be. It seems to me, particularly
the Shambo who's been in there a lot, seem to
(01:58):
get decent lies every time time they go in there.
That's not to say, you know, at the critical stage
in one of these closing holes that they will get
a horrible light. But it's all about the greens, as
you said, and you may say they're excessively I mean,
if amateurs tried to play the course at this speed,
you'd be out there for a month. But you know,
(02:19):
the pros have got to find a way to handle it,
and so far three of them at least are.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
It wouldn't be a golf chat without bringing up the
great one against Tiger Woods. He missed the cut with
a sievenovo. Would you be surprised if this was maybe
the last time we saw Tiger at the US Open?
Speaker 1 (02:37):
Okay, So he was asked that question and he gave
a typical Tiger out that he never gives anything away.
He said, it might be, but it might not be.
So that's what he said. So it could be, probably
won't be. I think it'll depend on how he goes
at the British Open. But it's a long time before
(02:58):
the major start again. You know, we're talking April next year,
after the British Open, before you see the Masters. So
I think he'll keep going if he stays fit. And
he's looking as good as as he's looked for many
years at the moment, So let's see. He needs to
play more golf, you know, to learn to score. He's
(03:19):
hitting the ball pretty well for a forty eight year old,
so I think we'll see him. I think he'll play
right up to the Seniors Tour.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
And our own Ryan Fox. I think he finished around
about fifty seventh or they're about At least he made
the cut, so he'd be reasonably happy with his game.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Yeah, he finished for the seventy six, so a plus
twelve total, right up there with Scotti Scheffler, and the
last time I looked at was actually tied for fifty seven.
So we'll see how he goes. But you know, he
made the cut. There's a huge number of big names
that didn't do that, so that's a feather in his cap.
And I don't think he's seen the course before. If
(03:58):
he did, it's escaped my memory. But you know, to
come in their first time and play a major championship
with this layout to make the cutters pretty admirable.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
So McElroy or Deshambo to win this one, who are
you picking?
Speaker 1 (04:14):
Well, the Shambo keeps hitting it in the rough and
as I say, surely he's going to get a nasty
lie and Rory's approach ions have not been very good
for a player of his quality. So you know, if
Rory can tidy up the approach irons, he's going to
win it. If the Shambo keeps getting lucky out of
the rough, maybe he'll just sneak at home. But it's
(04:36):
going to be, you know, one shot here or there,
one bad lie or one unlucky bounce. It's going to
decide it.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
And Rory has been a long time between drinks winning
a major for Rory to isn't it almost ten years?
Isn't it?
Speaker 1 (04:48):
It is ten years? Twenty fourteen PGA and Lewisville was
his last one, and at that stage it won four
majors in three years, starting with a twenty eleven USO Congressional,
and everybody thought, here we go, can he catch Tiger?
And if he catches Tiger, can he catch Jack Nicholas
because he looked unbeatable at that stage. But it's all gone,
(05:12):
you know, it's all gone to hell in a handbasket,
really for him in mages, not everywhere else. Of course,
he's still picking up regular tournament wins pretty easily, but
it's the majors that really have been knocking him around.
So a win here may reignite his career at the
age of thirty five.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Absolutely well, Deschambo now just about to go for a
power thing. Oh no, he'll be on a bootie if
he gets this one, and so he'll go back to
the lead if he gets it in. It's reasonably easy
one for him, isn't it.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Yeah, No, relatively plan so I would expect him to
make it. The fact that he got there from where
he was is a miracle shot. I mean, he's taking
on this course. There's no question he's not playing conservatively.
He's going for it and you know that may reward
him in the end, but hats off to him the
way he's playing. He's certainly been the crowd favorite of
(06:05):
this championship and he's thoroughly enjoying being back on the
big stage having spent most of the year, you know,
playing the live tour, which is not very well followed.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Well, he's out in front again now, one shot lead
over Rory McElroy. So there we go. Graham, always great
to chat mate. Thank you so much. It's a pleasure, indeed,
thank you gra Gars joining US US Golf Open. Yeah.
De Chambeau now seven under going to the eleventh. McElroy
is six under. He's also heading that way as well.
