Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the cricket field to the cow shed.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on gold Sport.

Speaker 3 (00:07):
Well, as we mentioned, there's all sorts of competitions and
skill that's involved, skill events that are happening here at
field days.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
Tractor polls going on behind me.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
But as you come down after the down the big
hill you'll see a digging contest happening there. I'm not
quite sure how you explain it. Graham Rogers joined us.
It's the organizer this one morning.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Graham, good morning and how are you this money?

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Yeah? Pretty good mate? Now tell us every year you
do this competition? What is it?

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Well, it's part of a nationwide competition that we have
with all the branches of the Civil Contractors Association. We
have different branches have their competitions each year and then
there's national competition organized for the Central District Skill Days
in April.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
And what do they do?

Speaker 2 (00:54):
What happens, Well, we'll start with as every industry should,
we start with the health and safety briefing. We start
with the drug test. We've start with the questionnaire before
they were out on site, and then there's ten different
exercises they do when they get on there. So these machines,

(01:14):
they are all they're all state of the art. It's
really been really interesting to see the development of them.
I've been involved in this for about nineteen years now,
and just to see the way that the machines have
developed and the technology. Some of them got iPads now
instead of controls and a dash. That's phenomenal. But the
probably the most one of the most one of the

(01:40):
events that most of the people come along to see
is the is the beer poor. It's what we start with.
So you've got to take you've got to take the
cap off a beer bottle, the proof of the bucket.
Then you've got to pick the bottle up with a
little holder that's attached to the bucket, and you've got
to pour the beer into a glass. So five points

(02:01):
for taking the top of the bottle, another five points
for how much beer actually ends up in the glass.
So you think about it. You've got your boom is
three or four meters out. You can't really judge distance
frottle back. You can judge a sideways, but trying to
judge the neck of the bottle is above the actual
glass itself. That's take a bit of practice. That's real skill,

(02:25):
certainly that After that, we've got a series of tubes
CBC tubes upright in the ground, decreasing its side from
one hundred and twenty mil down to ninety milk. Then
we've got a piece of weight suspended from the bucket
on a string, and you've got to keep the bucket
steady enough to drop the torpedo down inside east of

(02:47):
the tubes. After that, there's an egg sitting on a
little pile of sand, so you've got to pick the
egg up with the tooth of the bucket and then
carry it around and drop it into a glass sitting
on top of the post. All of these sound they
sound tricky, they sound hard, they sound almost impossible. But

(03:10):
of the ten events that we've got, the competitors have
to finish within forty minutes. There's things like painting a
We're to attach a paint brush to the bucket and
you've got to paint an S and a G on
the on the paint board in front of you. You've
got to get the bigger up on top of a

(03:32):
couple of logs. You've got to go from one log
to the other without the tracks touching the ground. In
the middle. Then once you're up on the logs, yousue
the boom around and there's a bucket of water balanced
on a couple of half round posts. So arch quite even.
We've decided to make it a little bit trigger this year.
The water twisted and then you've got to slide that

(03:55):
side that bucket along the along those posts from one
end of the other without stopping it off. So they've
sound weird and way out there type events, but it
shows the skills of the operators, and each event is
designed to show the people watching how these guys have

(04:17):
developed their films over the year and can relate them
to different tasks that I've got to do on Sorry,
there's one where you've got to pick up a basketball
and then drop it into a manhole that's three and
a half meters full, so you can't actually see the
whole of the top of the manholes you've got to
drop the basket and the basketball into. But it's the

(04:37):
experience that the guys have got knowing what it is
that is sitting on top of that manhole and then
adjusting the bucket around so you've got to silt the
bucket on the side so it comes out in a corner.
It just can't come out of the front. Yeah, that's amazing.
To anybody's time and wants to go along and have
a look, please come along so that.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
All starts when tomorrow does it's task tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
Morning, we've got third competitive each day. You'll be going
from eight about eight to fifteen, eight thirty through to
about four thirty each day.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
And they'll be at the end of it all and
over overall champion.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
Yep, prize money and then there's been a champion per
event as well, and then then an over world champion.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
And I love it.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
Look, I'll watch it, yeah, watch it for a couple
of years now and I think it's great.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
Boy, the precision is amazing. Hey Graham, that's great and
thank you for joining us this morning. Hope it all
goes well mate.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Yeah, just one of the if somebody wants to go
along and experience what it's like to sit in a
bigger there's a couple of heavy goo diggers there as well,
one for the smaller kids, one for the older older
guys as well, so you can just have a little
bit of a play and one of the exercises is
the same as what's on the event.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
Oh Nat knocking the top of a bottle of beer.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
Not quite that one day, one of the other.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
Graham thank you for joining us this morning and hope
it all goes well. Mate.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
Okay, thanks for having a good night.
