Speaker 1 (00:00):
Live add Field Days the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Plaguing a bit of Doctor Hook there Dinnis Courier from
Doctor Hook turned seventy four today. Gregor Paul joins us
right now. He'll be getting excited about a semi finals
weekend this weekend morning, Gregor, Good morning, big game coming
up at Eaton Park tomorrow night. Looks like it could
be a bit wet too.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
Well. I'm looking at the window at a moment and
I'm expecting the deli utes to start any time soon,
given that it's awkward and it's winter. I mean that
could be for the next three months, but at before
the Stone, so yeah, probably will be. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
This was almost like a Blitterslow Cup match in a
way because it is the Battle of the Tasman. You've
got the Brumbies versus the Blues. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
Look, and I said earlier someone that you know, I
know that the Blues put the Brumbies away quite easily
in their own robin when they played at Edon Park.
But you really get the Brumbies playoff history. Recently, they've
been in semi finals and they've played really well, and
there's been a wee bit unlucky, you know, not to
actually get into the final. I think they were quite

(01:05):
unlucky not to beat the Blues a couple of years
ago in the semi final. So they're a good team.
They're definitely a good team. They got a lot of
good players, were well coached. I think this could be
a lot closer than people are imagining, because I would
also expect the Blues to get a wee bit nervous,
you know, the big prize is getting close and for
a long time, and I think they'll be a wee

(01:25):
bit of nervousness, particularly without the captain. And it sounds
like a Kira and Yulani might not play much. Two
blows selection wise, so and almost a week bit of
experience for those two not.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Playing and the other one of course in Wellington on
Saturday afternoon the Hurricanes and the Chiefs as well. That's
going to be another rougher eye.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Yeah. I think that'll be a great game. And the
last time they played was a great game. In fact,
both times they've played this year's we really extended games.
And look, I think the chief the Hurricanes have impressed
me all year because they keeps they look a wee
bit wobbly every now and again, but then they get
the ship back on and even keel and they sail
beautifully again. And they're a good team. Those young players

(02:07):
are good. You feel that the chief who started the
season probably is pre tournament favorite. They haven't delivered that
sort of eighty minute outstanding performance that I think is
in them. Clearly if they're going to do it, they're
going to have to do it. They're going to have
to do it on Saturday if they want to stay
in this competition. But I don't think that that far

(02:27):
away from playing at the full potential. They've shown a
lot of glimpses in the last few weeks and you
feel that, well they can put that together for sixty
seventy minutes, they're going to be quite hard to contain.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
Gregor. I want to touch on an article you wrote
yesterday and it's online on the New Zealand Herald all
about New Zealand Rugby spending something like ten million on
content creation with the Guess documentary series. In their own words,
that's a lot of money to throw into something for television,
isn't it.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
I think that's content, that's the whole content spend rather
than just on one series, but that one series is
clearly you know, the big play within the within the
wider content play that they've made here. It's a lot
of money to spend. I mean, what does a Herald
spend on and say billion creating content. Well, it's probably

(03:19):
will be more than ten million over a year. But
we are content companies that we work for, so that's
I mean, to be spending ten million dollars when you're
not a content company, when you're actually a rugby and
that is a lot. I mean, there's a significant amount
of money to spend and you're going to make sure
if you're spending it, I'd be wanting to know where

(03:40):
we're getting the return on that. Are we going to
get the return on that? Is this worthy of the expenditure?
And as a rote I'm not sure that the latest
installment of you know, the All Black Stocking series, in
their own words, I don't know. I'd be a wee
bit disappointed. I am a wee bit disappointed doesn't really
tackle the issues I'd want to to tackle and I

(04:01):
think it's massively underwhelming.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
I haven't I haven't seen it personally. Have you watched it?

Speaker 1 (04:06):
In the first series, the bits that they've been that
have been released, and yeah, look underwhelming. Well put together,
it's kind of you know, high production values. It's got
the right formula what hep but the stories are cheapers.
You know, if you're going to compete with the Drive
to Survive, Breakpoint and all the other sports series that
are out there, you've got to put something on the

(04:28):
table that grips people. It's got to have personality, it's
got to have drama. It's got to take you deeper than,
you know, than the mainstream media have already taken you
by covering the World Cup. And I guess that's the
failure of it. It didn't tell viewers anything that they
didn't already know having read the Herald throughout the World Cup.
So you know, if you've got access to the players
and you can't get any deeper into the story, then

(04:49):
the Herald can from not having great access to the players.
I'm not sure you've done a great job in producing that. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Absolutely, It's a lot of money to evolve and off
the field stuff. I mean they're cutting into that two
hundred and sixty two million from Silver, like really are they?

Speaker 1 (05:03):
Yeah, Well, in the financial results who put out and
I think next week we'll get a real view of
how much money they've been cutting out silver Lex money
they've been burning through. But my understanding is it's quite
a lot. And you can argue that, oh, well, it's
an investment, but we're they going to get the return.
I mean that content is just content has been made

(05:25):
and watched. I also understand how that builds a return
on your investment, you know, like at The Herald, you
know we have advertising and we have subscription revenue that
pays for the content creation. So was then that our plan?

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Yeah, very good point. All right, Gregor will enjoy the
rugby yah this coming week in and we'll talk again
next week. Gregor Paul joining us here on gold Sport
