Speaker 1 (00:00):
Motorsport on the country Sport Breakfast powered by CRC five
to five six made right here in New Zealand. Well
time to talk motorsport now on the show in a
particular rallying and Hayden Padden strengthened his grip on a
second consecutive European Rally Championship with an absolutely dominating win
in rally as Sarah Dion and Wales at the weekend.

(00:24):
He joins us on the show this morning. Hayden, good
morning and congratulations.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Thanks so much, Brian.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
It was a comprehensive win, really, wasn't it. I think
you finished a minute forty eight or they're about to
ahead of the next competitor.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Yeah, that was a good wine you Obviously taking any
wind doesn't matter if it's one second or one minute,
but for sure you had to do it in the
way we did it right from the start of the rally.
Was pleasing a little bit surprising because we've sort of
been lacking that performance all season. But a few things
pre event with the team that they found with the
car obviously did the trick and yeah, it was just

(00:58):
back to sort of how a bit more normal, shall
we say, what we've been trying to chase all year,
and I.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
Think on tarmac was even more sort of pleasing for you. Really,
wasn't it.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
A definitely like I'm saying that Whales is, although it's
a Tarmaic, really it's quite a unique tarmic raally. The
roads are very narrow, very bumpy, so you do need
a little bit of a shall we say, a gravel
driving style on those type of stages. But yeah, like
and all the European championships here she predominantly tarmic for
year of five eight rounds of tarmac, so the championship

(01:28):
itself doesn't work to our strengths as much as it
has in the past, so to be competitive on the
tarmac surfaces as pleasing.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
You're now leading the championship by twenty one rally to go,
so how key was it to claim the maximum thirty
five points from Rally Wales.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
Yeah, it was massive. You know. Obviously we've we've had
a couple of tough events prior to that, so it
was good to get a bit of momentum, sort of
the credit down a big result to sort of to
put our mark on the championship. So to do that's
certainly pleasing. Obviously it's not quite enough points to bank
the championship with around the spare because the championship rules
is that you drop around, so seven your best seven

(02:06):
out of eight counted. So in a perfect world we
would have had good and then we wouldn't. As it stands,
we can't do that. So we've got a budget and
we can do try and try and make sure we
can get to the eighth round.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
Yeah, the next one is is in Poland. I believe
it's an all new rally. So how sort of positive
areue about getting to that event?

Speaker 2 (02:26):
Obviously we'll try to get this. We want to just
give up on a championship, so and put it fully
in the hands of our competitor, because Francesk who's that,
says well, if we don't go in to second, are
here to fill win the championship, so the rest. But
obviously money doesn't grow on trees either, so we have
to sit down and work hard to you know, with
the team and with partners and see what's possible. And

(02:48):
of course we'll be working doubly hard to make sure
we can do it.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
You've got a bit of time, really, it's not till
what October the eleventh.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
Is it, yes, so mid October, so we've got about
five six weeks and obviously got a very busy period
here as the element of that up comings it's in rally,
so actually have two weeks it should be here.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
What's happening for the europe You actually go through school
qualify over so how does it as far as the
rallies are concerned.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yeah, Like obviously road positions we've been a key factor
in rallying and it varies from rarely the rally whether
it's gravel or tarmic, and whether you want to be
at the front or the back. And it's always a
discussion point even w C. You know you always hear
drivers talking about it. So er C they have a
qualifying It basically means from that it sets your road
position for the rally. So on gravel rallies that the

(03:33):
fastest person goes at the back and the slowest at
the front, and on timaic rallies the fastest person's at
the front. So qualifying becomes very important because it sets
you up for the weekend.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
And we you in Wales with.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
The type of roads that were there that it was
very important to be at the front and traditionally we
haven't been great in qualifying this year because that's where
you need absolute maximum performance.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
In the car.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
The drivers. You've had a couple of practice runs to
the drivers and everything know the roads very well, so
pacenotes don't becomes such a factor and it's just about
driving as fast as you can. So yeah, it was
pleasing to get a good qualifying Wales because isn't it
was what set us up for the rally.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
And because as you mentioned, you've got a busy month ahead.
You've got the Daybreak a rally and the man Or
two and in a week or so from now then
Rally Bay have plenty in October as well as Ashley
Forrest Rally sprints. So it's a very busy time for
you and the team, isn't it. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
Luckily let the team here he see, and they've been
amazing job. They've been very busy of the last couple
months getting everything rebuilt, not just for us but also
our customers. And then of course yeah very busy. Now
three rounds and New Zealand Championship to go. We've got
actually Forrest, we've got the ev car coming back out,
we've got another social car coming as well, so we've
got a few things going on. So yeah, at the
end of that, I love being busy. I think between

(04:42):
now and Christmas I've got something like three days off.
So I love being like that though, And at the
end of the day, I'm living my dream, doing what
I love and doing what's a great team and talking
about living the dream.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
You also drove a WRC car the Goodwood Festival of
Speed recently. What was that like?

Speaker 2 (04:59):
Yeah, memories. It was the same spitcar that we drove
back in twenty and eighteen, so yeah, it was obviously
pretty special to get a bit invited to go along
and drive out and put on a bit of a
show and if anything, just sort of gave you the
itch again, don't want to be driving a WRC car
and but yeah, no, it was incredible experience and even
Goodwood as a whole, I'm sure as you know, this
is a phenomenal event with the amount of cars and

(05:21):
history and people that are there, so to be part
of it all was pretty special.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
Well, we wish you the very very best of luck
and hopefully you can get to Rally Poland in October. Hayden,
thanks for joining.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
Us, mate, great, thanks so much, Brent.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
Hayden Pain can we rarely start and you zeel a
rally champion. Gee's a busy man. Three days off between
now and Christmas
