Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're talking international rugby now on the country Sport Breakfast
where the All Blacks play their final test of the
season just after nine o'clock Sunday morning live here on
gold Sport. We'll have a commentary up against Italy in
a Chili turin. Joining us on the CSP this morning
is All Black assistant coach Jason Holland marj You know, Jason,
(00:21):
mate got the willies on. It's a bit chilly over there,
I believe, yes.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Been good to make sure we use all our kits
and the jackets and the beanies are out, but no,
it's good, nice clear days, but but you're definitely pretty cold.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
So Jason, let's talk about the team that's been named.
Not as many changes as expected. Why was that?
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Yeah, Look, just the continuity of our game and hell
been going as really important to us or speak for Italy.
They around their six nations and what they've been doing lately,
So that was important for us to finish us too
well and then make sure that we continue with the
with a nearly in the way our game has been going.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
Ethan the group back in the side and for injured
Tarmothy Williams, would this change still have been made if
Tomoty was healthy.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Yeah, yeah, Nah, would have would have. Grout has been training,
training really well for two or three weeks. Then you
know the boys that would offer, and Tom's gone really
well through the England Island Games. You know they un
their selection. But our group has trained well and was
due to start and we're looking forward to his performance
on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
The weather's been a big topic of conversation back here,
with the report's saying below zero for kickoff. How do
you train for that sort of weather?
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Oh, look, I suppose we need to be. I suppose
we're training that during the weeks pretty cold here already.
But I was just an awareness of our game and
if the ball got slippery or those sorts of things,
how we play and how we apply precious so you know,
we still have massive intention and how we want to
play the game with the ball and the power of
position and holding on to the ball, but aware of
(02:01):
a little adjustments just that if the ball gets really
shut free or we're through through some snow or rain
or whatever it may be. So you always got your
little wads around how you play from tweak when we
feel it.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
So looking back to last Sunday's clash against France almost
the one that got away? How did you raid that one?
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Yeah, I suppose as a group, we're really really disappointed
that we were able to nail that. I think times
during that game we probably played some of our best
rugby that have played all season, to be honest, and
the French were my opinion, probably one of the probably
the best side we've played over in the Northern Hemisphere.
So yeah, but we look at the game and we
look at the little little bits of opportunities that we had,
(02:43):
you know, three for opportunities to score tries that we
didn't quite take, and a couple of you know, we
didn't get out of our own end as efficiently as
we would have liked in that last twenty twenty five minutes.
So yeah, it was it was a bit of the
one that got away and really disappointing to lose by
a point when we felt like we've been building that
game nicely and hit some really good moments in that game.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Been any special work ons this week of training.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
Oh, look, as a couple of things around A couple
of things I just talked around really around making sure
how do we finish the opportunities we're creating, how do
we make sure that when we get down at the
opposition twenty two that we score points and score tries.
So there was one thing and as I said, were
scoring points and maybe not getting out of our own
end as efficiently as we would like with teams kicking
(03:31):
off and corners. So that two were the key things
which were sort of took the pressure off France and
back on to us in key moments. So we will
look to be more efficient in that space.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
On Sedlee well, the Sunday farewell matches for two men
that have given a lot for the all Black Jersey,
Sam Kaine and TJ Peranara, how special is it to
be able to give those boys one more run?
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Yeah, I think if there's in the top of the
list around motivation for the whole group management players is
to make sure we put a performance out but that
those boys can be proud of. Look obviously massive, massive
parton and the history of hes in a rugby those
two and it's hugely loved in this environment and massive
leaders within us. So you absolutely unbelievable men and the
(04:22):
determination to make sure we do them proud on certainly
night as huge so you know, they've done so much
and he's rugby and we can't wait to put it
out there for them on Saturday Night.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
And on TJ. You've had a lot to do with
him through his career. Coaching him at the Hurricanes took
us through how he's developed over the years.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
Yeah. Look, I come in the knees halfway through teacher's career,
I suppose, and I've just watch them become the absolute
leader around the group, those when to those when to
be grumpy, and those when to give boys to pump
up and those and knows the game so well. So
as a coach, he's awesome to you know, pop in
(05:03):
little things to every now and then around you know,
where he thinks we can do things a little bit
differently or what's good. So he's you know, the boys
love him. He's he's tough and he's a guy that
the boys look up to and I expect him to
to come off the bench with massive energy and be
proud of the way he finishes.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
On the other side of the field, the Italians funny
year for them this year. Jason one of their best
six nations if it's ever, wins over Scotland and Wales
either a draw over France, but they've struggled in the
Autumn Nations tournaments. What do you make of their side?
You can't take them lightly, can you?
Speaker 2 (05:41):
No, he can't. Look as you've mentioned that Six Nations
that they really look competitive during that and yeah, obviously
Argentina gave them, you know, put a few points on
them a couple of weeks ago. But they've got some
siding players, you know, the back three, so some of
the accounter attack stuff is pretty and then you know
they've got real threats in the backfield. And yeah, it's
(06:04):
a bit of an unknown quantity. So I suppose when
you get that, you just got to make sure that
as I said here, we're pretty happy with lots of
our game against France, and we were worried about our
performance and making sure that we keep growing rather than
you know, getting you know, sitting them being playtewing a
little bit with our performance. So yeah, a little bit unknown,
but definitely have the capabilities to play some really good footy.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
So just eighty minutes left of the season. Have you
enjoyed your first year as a member of the All
Black coaching staff.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Yeah, No, it's been awesome. There's been lots of little
things to learn along the way and just a little
differences between you know, the step up from Super Footy.
But you know, she's a pretty pretty awesome environment to
be yes pretty much together for five or six months,
you know, through from June through through all now and
the abilieve has sort of spend time with each other
(06:55):
and and being you know, competing at the top end.
I was specially through you know, the the South Africa
as the Argentina series and then you come together over here.
It's no, it's cool as all. We want to keep
getting better and both myself and the group wanted to
keep getting better. But it's exciting, and you know, you
(07:16):
have a little of a break and I know by
January February, we're hoping that dream rolls around pretty quick.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
I guess you'd be excited to get some time off.
Or does it never really stop?
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Oh yeah, no, we'll look at'll stopped for December for
it that way, so we'll have a break and switch
off and then probably come in to coming to early January.
Switch I want set back into it. But yeah, it's been,
it's been. You know, it's busy, but it's awesome. It's
awesome to be involved in these big occasions.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
Fantastic or Jason, all the very very best for Sunday morning.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
Thanks for joining us, mate Awes, and thank you every
good one.
