Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sport, the Latest from the Land and just great rock.
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport,
your home of Live commentary twenty.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Two away from nine. He's got a plane to cash
to New York this afternoon, but he joins us before
he flies out. Jesse Check morning, Jesse.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
Morning, BK. I'm in the midst of packing.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Oh right, well it'll be hot over there, so you
won't have to take too many sort of warm clothes, mate.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Yeah, don't feel sorry for me. It's going to be
a good weekend.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Penultimate Round of Sale GP this week in New Zealand
leading it finds Australia actually an unfamiliar territory because they're
sitting third and there have been three time champions, haven't.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
They And they're not out of the words as we know.
Top three teams at the end of the thirteen race
series go into their Winnisaxaw final and where they're sitting
at the moment, they're in danger. BK. I mean you've
got ten Mark there, six points behind France, right and
there as well, So one dad race might be in
(01:02):
New York, it might be in San Francisco. Look to
be honest, I think if anyone's going to be tripped up,
it will be in New York. It's going to be
a really tough venue. So the addis, I mean they're
in danger and serious danger of dropping out of that
top three.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
What's the New York venue like.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
One of the most difficult to sail And you probably
say that about a few venues, but I mean, you
just don't have the landscape surrounding you like you do
in New York, the biggest buildings in the in the
world towering around you three hundred and sixty degrees. In
this race course, they've moved it slightly as well, from
when we went to New York in twenty nineteen. They
come right back down below Lower Manhattan's so you've got
(01:41):
Governor's Islands, You've got the Statue of Liberty right there.
In terms of a setting, there's not many venues that
are going to be more iconic than this one. But
what that does is just makes it incredibly difficult. You
can imagine the wind funneling through a city like New York,
and you've got these massive wind shifts coming at you
left right, and it seems and we've seen in the
(02:01):
last couple of events that these big wings, if they
get caught out on the wrong angle or they push
the wrong button, they can flip in an absolute heartbeat.
So I want to be surprised, I really want to
be surprised to see some big wind shifts tossing these
boats over and capsizes this weekend. Then you add in
the you know, the currents and the flows of the
rivers in there as well, and you know there's a
(02:23):
lot to contend with in New York.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Is there an advantage to the US team sailing there?
Speaker 1 (02:31):
No, I mean this is kind of you know the
big sailing and sailing and sailing. Sometimes it's better to
be lucky than good. I think that's no more true
than here in New York. There's going to be an
incredible amount of luck needed with these wind shifts and
the currents. And you know, the wind conditions are looking
all right, but they can change in a matter of
(02:52):
seconds in a venue like that. So this is the
event where someone could be spat out the back and
really just throw the Canama victims in the race for
the top three. In the US team specifically, I think
the would need a miracle to do well in New
York since Taylor Canfield's come in and taken over from
(03:12):
Jimmy Siddle. They went from second on the leaderboard and
they're all the way down and eighth place over or so,
that team has finished dead last, and we saw a
few oud ends and it looks that team looks in
absolute ruins.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
In Halifax, we saw Emmert's to Great Britain sort of
come to the four so to speak, turning point for them.
Maybe they're the ones to look out for.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Well, I don't know where they've been. I mean Sibby
Namesley stepped away and Giles Scott came into the Mets.
And while the driver change is huge for a team,
Giles has got a couple of gold medals and the
actual team doesn't change. You know, he's still got some
of the most experienced sailors in those types of boats.
So they've been unperforming no doubt. Throughout the season. I
(03:55):
would say they're the top three team every single day
of the week. So yeah, I durn a real outside
shot to get up into the top three come the
end of the season. Two ones and you know, we've
seen teams loose points with crashes, all equipment failure as well,
so they don't count the Brits out.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
No changes on board the New Zealand boat. All pretty
settled there with Pete Berling steering the machine.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
Yeah, so the same team as it's been throughout the
season there. And I think for the key is New
York's a big one going into the end of the season.
They can be conservative making it into the top three
that want to take the race in San Francisco. But
I think for them, I reckon they're going to come
out fire and I think New York's one where I
(04:41):
want to have a really strong result. I don't think
they want to just kind of lag themselves into that final.
I think they really want to hit their straps. They
were gusted after Halifax with how they performed there. Really
they missed out one. So the team's the same and
from what I've I've heard on the ground, they're probably
more driven than ever to to have a big one
in New York and just kind of solidify I suppose
(05:04):
this spot at the top of the leaderboard and say
we're on the top, but we deserve to be there.
I mean, the Ausies have been complaining about losing points
and that, but you're going to remember the Keywis had
that tragedy, you know, back in Santrapez. Through the season,
I think a win here in New York solidify themselves
on the top of the leaderboard, that'll be what they're
looking to, you know, really hit San Francisco with So.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Yesterday we had the big announcement no sale GP for
Littleton Harbor. The Hector Dolphins have went out on that one.
So where is it going to go? Do we get
around in New Zealand next season?
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Yeah, so obviously the Dolphins. Yeah, one, it's probably more
than one nil now they're probably three nil. But yeah,
it's a shame for me as you know, something that's
gone around with this thing. It was nothing better than
christ Church. I mean just the fans that turned out
and numbers that we've never seen on the seat. It's
(06:01):
going to be a shame not to not to head
back there. But fortunately with the new schedule and they're
really just trying to ram these things in right across
the globe, it's just not going to work in February
in christ Church during the during the May ten season,
So we move I think we move it. I think
it stays in New Zealand. Auckland to me is the
(06:22):
number one and probably the only option they're looking at. Yeah,
I was up there last week down the end of
when you're pointed there and looked out, and it is
an awesome spot. The wind conditions are right in that
in that spot in there, it's going to be an
awesome venue. I think the people will come out like
they did in christ Church. I don't think anything will
(06:42):
be different.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
All right, Well, let's hope of Aukland next year. All right,
safe travels mate, and we'll talk at the end of
the weekend. Thanks for kay Jesse Chuck joining us sale
GP New York this coming weekend. Just a couple of
days to go before the sailing gets underway.
