Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on
Gold Sport Time to.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Talk sale GP Now on the show where our Black
Foils have won the first event of the role ex
sale GP twenty twenty five season in Dubai with a
convincing victory ahead of Emirates, Great Britain and the United
States and the winner takes all final in Dubai. Joining
us A Mana was dockside to watch all the action.

(00:26):
Bleir Tuke's brother Jesse Chuck Morning, Jesse.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Morning, BK. Yeah, what a weekend here in Dubai. What
a way to kick off the twenty twenty five season.
Black Foil is getting it done. So we'd like to see.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Absolutely this year a little different. Number one, we had
a couple of extra teams eleven teams on the water
and a few changes to the Kiwi team as well,
with Leo Takahashi coming in, So that'd be very very
pleased with that start, wouldn't they know?

Speaker 1 (01:00):
It's men name memis off season. I mean we haven't
really had this in sale GP so far. It's really
new to open up a transfer window and it doesn't
really go off as we expected. I think everyone kind
of thought there was gonna be one trade here or
one trade there, but it really opened up. We saw
people like Kyle Langford from the Aussies moving over to

(01:20):
the Italian team, and you know on our home shores,
Andy Maloney going over to the Brazilian team moved under Brazil.
So yeah, a real shake up for the kiwis, real
shakeup for the Black Foils. Leo Takahashi coming into the mix.
He's young, but I mean he's been around the block
sale GP. I mean looking back, he was with the
SALGP Japanese team in season one and two and they

(01:43):
went close to winning it a couple of times. So
he knows a thing or two about flight control and
he showed that over the weekend. I mean, he's young,
and people were I guess slowly questioning his school set
coming into the mix, but he threw it down and
showed that he's a young talent. It's a force to
be reckoned with, which is absolutely fantastic for Black Fors fans.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Obviously, the f fifty for the Kiwis goes pretty well
in the light ears because I believe the wind was
fairly light across the weekend.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
Yeah, the fifties. In the light air, they've got the
chance to adapt the wings. So depending on the wind
conditions they can go from the normal twenty four meta wing,
they can pump that up to the twenty nine meta
wing and then likewise in the heavier breeze they can
drop that down to the eighteen meta wing. But if
you look at the results over the last couple of
years in the lighter conditions, when we do go up

(02:35):
to that twenty nine meta wing, we've got a really
good track record. So whatever it is about the New
Zealand boat and the twenty nine medal wing, they seem
to go well. There is a slight asterism there obviously
looking back to Santa Pe last season, that's the twenty
nine meta wing was the one that collapsed on them
in Santa Pez when it fell down on the team.

(02:57):
But since then they've just looked absolutely unstoppable with the
twenty nine meter wing, and it's because it is just
an absolute beast to try and tame. I mean, every
team really struggles with controlling the twenty nine minute wing
casts a massive wind shadow and it's got a lot
of complexity that comes to it. So it's great that
our teams can kind of harness that and really use

(03:19):
it to an advantage because when you look along this
whole long season, there's lots of events, but the last
event of the season it's in Abu Dhabi, the big
Grand Final. The win attacks all Grand Final is in
light air conditions. So to start off the season with
the win and light air conditions is a good result
because we know that's where we're going to finish and.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
It would have been reassuring beating Emirates Great Britain, of course,
almost the repeat of the America's Cup, wasn't it.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
Yeah, quite good. Dylan Fletcher was in the mix as well.
It's his first event back. He hasn't been in the
Saal gp mix for quite a while, so it was
a bit of Bob as your uncle. You know, here
we go. Good to have you back, Dylan. You're still
in second place and don't you forget it. But you
know it's it's good. It's rivalries and that's what solgpig gives.

(04:11):
It's not just like one team on one team. You know,
you've got that going on.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
You've got the.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
USA team in the mix who have really kind of
thrown a lot of fisticuffs around the place early on
despite not having the greatest results, and then you've got
the Ausies missing on the final, the Spanish missing out
on the final as well. So that's the beauty of
having eleven twelve teams on the race course. It's not
just one on one. You've got kind of all these
big rivalries going on and it's kind of just really

(04:37):
just throwing it all down. It's good to be back, actually,
twenty thirty five season, it's good to be here.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
When I spoke to Peter Berling on Friday ahead of
the racing on the weekend, he said, having eleven boats
all going for that start line, it was really really
important to get a good start. And obviously the kiwis did,
did they Yeah?

Speaker 1 (04:55):
Starting? You know, I feel like everyone's quite critical on
the Kiwis on they're starting, and I reckon. It's sometimes
a bit unjust I reckon. Track record wise, Pete does
get a good start more often than not, but especially
when you've got this big twenty nine meter wings, you
have to start good because if you don't, you just
get absolutely sucked out the back because you've got no

(05:18):
control over your fate. You're in the wind, shadow of
everyone else. So the key we started. They didn't start
absolutely spectacular all week, but they were just good enough
to be in the mix. And that's something I think
we've lacked in previous seasons is that they've almost gone
to brighte. You know, you're the first of your last,
and this week they just seem to be pretty happy

(05:39):
with going. Look, let's just get off the start in
good shape, work our way through, trust our boat, speed,
trust our crew, and just pig everyone back throughout the
throughout the throughout the race. And that's what they did
this week. So they started well, they sailed well, and
quite frankly, sal do if you can often deliver a
winner that maybe wasn't the most deserving of it throughout

(05:59):
the win they sailed okay, but they made the final
and they got the win this week. It's definitely feir
to say that the Keywis were the best performances throughout
the whole weekend and deserving winners of the final.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
And teacher now shifts to the home event, it'll be
a different story. I would imagine Off Winyard caught it
in Auckland January eighteenth and nineteenth, won't it.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Yeah, Well, we're going to multiply the fans on shore
by about twentyfold, I think going from Dubai to Auckland.
I mean we're talking about the biggest purpose built grand
stand in the South Pacific. I mean, I think in
the Southern Hemisphere. Someone told me today, so that I've
seen the graphics, I've seen the markups of what we're
installed for. They're at Windard Quarter. It's going to be

(06:43):
absolutely mammoths thousands, over ten thousand people watching from the shoreline.
They're at Windyard Quarter, and whichever way you look at it,
it's going to be absolutely brilliant event. Obviously, the keywis
defending champs going in after winning in christ As last year.
So yeah, Auckland, you've got a bit live up to.
I must say, chriss it turned on last year. So

(07:03):
anyone coming to Auckland, make sure you bring your dancing shoes,
your voices and really get the black because imagine that
starting twenty twenty five season with two ones on the trot.
That's never happened in salgb before, so that would be
absolutely members.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
Jesse Safe travels Homemade and we'll talk closer to that
big event in Auckland. Thank you so much.

Speaker 1 (07:24):
Jers b Kay, we'll have to have you up in Auckland.
I reckon for that one, so we'll see you there.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
Yep, you will. I'm booked in January eighteenth and nineteenth
for sal GP. Should be very, very exciting and
