out here on gold Sport the Country Sport Breakfast talking
weather ahead of the long weekend. John Lord joins us
from the mid Service.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
Morning, John Kyoto, good morning.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Before we talk about the long weekend, let's just talk
about the hammering again that the poor old east coast
of the North Island around the Gisbon what our region
took again yesterday. They've had a hell of a year
of wheather, haven't they.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
They have indeed same sort of idea with a big,
deep low pressure sitting off of that eastern cape of
the country and with those southeast winds pushing the rainfall in. Now,
normally the hills and ranges on that western side of
the region have actors, would have protect you know, if
we think about most of my weather comes in from
the western side of the country that get a ble
of sheltering through air. So it's normally a fantastic place
to be, plenty of clear sky, sunshine. But when the
(01:08):
winds come in from that other direction. It pushes in
through there and runs up in towards the hills and ranges,
and of course, once that rain is in the hills
and ranges, it's got to go somewhere, so it fills
in towards those rivers. And it's been just a day
of rain that just continue to feed through. So it's
been incredibly wet, but also very windy. I think Gisban
Airport's saw some strongest winds it's reported over the last
(01:30):
well ten twenty years or so as we went through Tuesday,
So windy, wet, and of course high seas as well.
Those winds really helping to drive that home, which brings
with it its own coastal issues as well. So definitely
a very unsettled story on that eastern side.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
And that big low is slowly, slowly moving.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Away exactly, so thankfully we are seen and improvement. We've
seen those to the weather warnings canceled as we went
through the nighttime. They've all expired. We'll find more wet
weather today on that eastern side, but not to the
same level, and as it pulls away, generally better right,
drier conditions as we head through towards the long weekend.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
We'll talking about a long weekend. It's Matadiki tomorrow around
the country. Looks like it's going to be reasonably settled.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
I think it will be, and I think for many
of us, first thing on Friday morning we should hopefully
see a bit of clear sky coming through. There will
be pockets of cloud. I think the eastern coast still
struggling on the north line, and down in the far south,
we think we'll find there's more cloud in the western side.
For many of us, I think hopefully a bit of
a chance to get out there early on and see
a bit of the night or the dawn sky and
(02:29):
hopefully see Matadiki's first thing on Friday morning.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
That's really good news. Okay into the weekend. Now there's
a Warriors game at home. A lot of people will
be looking forward to that one for a big win.
What's the weather going to be like Mount Smart on
Saturday night.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
Saturday night's going to be an interesting one. We had
this front moving northwards as we head through the daytime
on at Saturday. By lunchtime, protracted across the lights of
Tabanaki to Wellington by a sun heading towards the even time.
Towards game time, I think it might be knocking on
the door of Auckland, so I would take a coat.
I think we might find some showers as we head
through there, and perhaps some longer spells of rain just
(03:05):
in time for the game itself, but hopefully there's still
be some good breaks between it, and by.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
The looks of the weather map, there's some sort of
rough stuff heading towards the South Island as well across
the course of the rest of the weekend.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
That's it. I think they've got a bit of a
break as we head through Saturday. It looks to be
a good day for you on Saturday for the South Island. However,
as we head in towards Sunday, particularly for that western coast,
I think we'll find another area of rainfall pushing through there.
So we could find some heavy rain petic place like
few Audland and up in towards the the ranges of Westland,
so worth keeping a close sight on the three weather
(03:37):
Woman's there, but hopefully on the eastern side they might
find the winds picking up some dry weather out through
there too.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
I'm just looking at the weather map and there's a
huge high across the east coast of Australia coming our way,
So maybe next week could be more settled.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
Hopefully start to see a bit one way of that
high pressure pushing back towards us. It's been really reluctant
to come through, but I think we are going to
find once that low runs across US on Sunday, month
high pressure comes back towards US a bit more of
a southerly feed of air. I think we will perhaps
see a bit more of some cooler temperatures later on,
but still some showers pitching through. But hopefully I think
with a high pressure building across US, definitely a bit
(04:11):
more settled with it and the good news so the
people are on the eastern coast of the North Side,
definitely more settled for you for.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
All the ski buddies, I mean, we're almost at July.
Is there any snow on the way in the next
few weeks.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Well, I think we will find a bit of snowfall
with this front as that runs up on Saturday, mainly
down towards places like Mountain Spire and National Park. Perhaps
over some of the hills and ranges blased like the
Remarkables might give a snowfall from that, but I think
it mostly on that western side one airth the house.
As we're heading towards next week with some cooler temperatures
coming through, hopefully will catch some of those showers, so
I would, so we've got the chance of a bit
(04:43):
more on the some snowfall picyally about the tops of
the ski fields one airthing house, but it's definitely not
out of the woods to just chat.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
No, all right, John, nice to catch up. Have a
great weekend. Thank you so much.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Thanks very much. Have we got on yourself
