Speaker 1 (00:00):
Big Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Off we go to the Land of Hope and Glory.
Catching up with Johnny Norman talkSPORT Cricket editor and presenter
of the following on Cricket podcast. Haven't spoken for a
couple of weeks.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
Morning John, Good morning to you mate. I hope you
and your listeners as well.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Yep, we're all well. We're all refreshed after our nice
we holiday and hope you're well. How's your weather over
there at the moment you're in the summer?

Speaker 1 (00:31):
Well, I mean yeah, kind of. We had the in
laws over from Auckland and I'll tell you what. They
landed about the twentieth of July, just as summer appeared.
And then they went home about a week and a
half ago and they took the summer with them. It
is ridiculous. And then next week the temperature is going
to drop to fifteen sixteen degrees. I was listening. I

(00:53):
went to get my haircut yesterday and the lady headdresser
was telling me she's already putting a summer clob is
you know, away for this for the winter, And I'm like,
what has it come to that already. I'm blinking you
miss it. Summer here, I tell.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
You hasn't been the best. All right, let's talk cricket
first off, and the big news over here today, and
I guess over there as well. Brendon McCullum is going
to become England's new white ball means cricket coach from January,
combining the roles with his existing ridball duties. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
Now, I tell you what. This is a story one
of a good friend of mine, George de Bell, who
writes for the Cricketer magazine. He told me that he'd
heard this room or a couple of weeks ago. We're
on this on the circuit. We were at the first
Test I think we're up in Manchester for the old
Trafford Test, Sri Lanka, the visitors, and I mean I

(01:46):
was with him and he kind of voiced his opinion,
and he voiced it in front of some other journalists
and they completely flat batted it away. They were like,
no way, it's going to go to Trescothic, it might
go to flint Off, it might be oh in Morgan,
here we go. The press release dropped a half two
this afternoon. B mac is going to be the main

(02:08):
man across both Tests fifty over and twenty over for
a couple of years. So that's an Ashes away, that's
an India series at home with the Red Bull, and
then it's going to be a Tea twenty World Cup
in Sri Lanka and India, a fifty over World Cup
in South Africa, and you know that is a hell
of a lot of work. So you're not going to

(02:30):
see him in New Zealand too often. I made over
the next couple of years.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
And you sound a little surprised that he is going
to be the white ball means cricket coach, are you.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
Well, I am a little. You know, the general feeling
or the consensus was that England played too much cricket
and it's impossible to combine the roles, you know, So
in fairness to Brendan, if you have a look at
twenty twenty five, there's a there's a tour of India,

(03:01):
then there's a champions Trophy at the start of the year,
then I guess it's ipl so he won't be needed
in March and April going through to May. It's a
big summer of Test cricket. I mean possibly might hand
the reins to to you know, a Marcus Frascothic for
the West Indies series at the start of the year,
I mean, and then the Ashes towards the back end,

(03:23):
and of course there is a white ball trip to
New Zealand, so you know, maybe he just fancies combining
that with some with some home time. But yeah, I
am surprised, actually, but pleasantly surprised, because I think he's
exactly the kind of guy England need right now. He's
going to bring an identity back to the white ball team,
a new way of looking at things, just a little

(03:46):
bit of fresh impetus, and I think Josh Butler will
absolutely be delighted he's going to be working with Brenda mccullor, because,
of course Josh Butler kind of moved away from Test
cricket just before Brendan came in and introduced basball to
the world. So yeah, surprise, but also kind of excited.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
Fantastic and staying with cricket. No bums on seated lords
for the Sri Lanka Tis.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
Why was that, Well, there's a couple of reasons for it.
I mean, you know, Brendan McCullum has probably got a
little bit to blame for that, because of course England
wrap up there, whether they win or lose, they do
it within three days generally speaking, so I think that
probably played a part. People just don't think Test cricket's
going to be happening on a fourth day. And why

(04:29):
would you have shell out one hundred quid two hundred
New Zealand dollars for a day's cricket when you don't
even know if it's going to happen or not. The
opposition as well, Sri Lanka. They're not the household name
team that they were ten to fifteen years ago. I
mean there's no Dilsha and Sangakarajai, Wardener Marilli, so that

(04:50):
plays the part, and maybe just a bit of overkill
over here. So much cricket played, and you know, whilst
the first three days at the Law Tests against West
Indies and sold out, I think people have just kind
of got to a point where they don't want to
be spending this amount of money, especially when they're not
there's no guarantee they're going to actually watch competitive, top

(05:13):
top top class sport.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Yeah, good answer that one. All right, let's talk about
footy as well. If you've got that underway now the
new season, the EPL and Manchester United struggling in the
start of the new season.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
Well, I mean I was chatting to your standing presenters
over the last couple of weeks, Craig and Hamish, and
I was saying, you know, me and b K have
been talking about a ten big under pressure for the
past year and a half. It's like a regular slot,
isn't it. So we talk about, you know, the problems
at Manchester United again and here we are and we're

(05:48):
going to do it all over again. We won't next
week because there's an international breaks at Manchester United aren't playing,
but that's the only reason, because it is the number
one subject in this country.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
You know.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
There was pictures of Jim Ratcliffe, the new owner, with
his head in his hands watching the capitulation against Liverpool.
Liverpool won three nil, they could have won five or
six at Manchester United lit miles off, so there's a
lot of there's a lot of conversation. But the board
have come out today they say they're absolutely behind their man,
so you know he'll be sacked in two weeks And.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
Me and silly the striker Earling Hallan I mean, he
keeps on scoring goals. He's a machine, isn't he?

Speaker 1 (06:26):
Well he is, I mean back to back hat tricks.
If you haven't got him in your fantasy team, which
is a big thing over here, I don't know if
you do it in New Zealand, if there's a rugby
you know these fancy leagues they do. But you know,
if you haven't got him in your team, then you've lost.
He just churns out the goals and it's incredible to
think at the start of the season and still, to

(06:47):
be honest with you, people are asking the question about
you know or easy actually that good? Well, the answer
is if he's playing at home, yes, and if he's
playing anyone in the team the top four, absolutely yes,
and the jury is out maybe at the absolute top top.
But I remember the same conversation being said about Christiano

(07:09):
Ronaldo when he was a Manchester United and few would
dare suggest he isn't anything other than an absolute out
and out legend. Now so enjoying while we got in,
because of course, the big money in Europe these days
isn't necessarily in England, and I wonder how long it
will be before the likes of real Madrid or Barcelona
come sniffing around? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (07:31):
Absolutely, Hey John, always good to catch up mate. Enjoy
your week and we'll do it again next week.

Speaker 1 (07:36):
Look forward to it BK. And as I say, guaranteed
no ten hog chat this time next week.
