Speaker 1 (00:00):
International rugby coverage on the Country Sport Breakfast is proudly
brought to you by Access Solutions, elevating you and your
business to a higher level talking rugby.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
On the show now and Yesterday, Scott Robinson and his
coaching staff name their squad for the Northern Hemisphere tour,
only one change from the group which contested the Rugby Championship.
Half back Camroy Guard returning from that long injury layoff
to take the place of Crusader youngster Noah Hotham, and
the All Blacks of course play Japan before heading to
Europe for the tests in England, Ireland, France and Italy.
(00:34):
Joining us on the CSB this morning to look at
the squad, one half of the Rugby Direct podcast and
New Zealand Herald Rugby writer Liam Napier. Morning, Liam, Morning, Well,
your first thoughts on the squad made only one change.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
It's certain no headline surprises where there bka certain conservative
continuity theme as has been the case largely throughout Scott
Robertson's maiden tenure at the helm Roy gad return He's
very much the future for the All Blacks at halfpack,
along as courtiers Artimo who's been taking his chance in
(01:08):
a big way this year. But I guess the main
conjecture and talking points are the lack of change and
continuing the farewells of Sam Kin and TJ. Penina.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
Do you think as a rugby journalist that they should
have been included.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
I think you can justify Sam Kaine's inclusion on the
experienced basis leadership behind the scenes, but it does raise
the pressing question of who is the next All Blacks
open site And I don't know whether Scott Robertson knows
that himself. Is he going to switch Ardie Severe to
number seven and put s Wallace a Titi to number eight?
(01:47):
But they the All Blacks have missed an opportunity here
to bring in someone like a twenty one year old
Peter Lukey from Wellington and the Hurricanes, who I feel
is very much the future of the All Blacks. Loose
forwards Dalton Papalali has fallen out of favor in a
big way. Maybe the All Blacks look to someone like
an Ethan Blackheader at seven, but TJ. Peinara I personally
(02:09):
wouldn't have selected him. I think cam Rogad and Ratamara
the future and Noah Hopim is the next cab off
the rank behind them. Scott Robinson did say that Finlay
Christi and Noah Hosm will be in the All Blacks
fifteen squad that will play actions against Munster and Georgia,
(02:29):
but he has leaned heavily on experience by taking Petinara
and came before they go to Japan next year.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
It's going to be an interesting one because it gets
named at two o'clock this afternoon. That that All Black fifteen,
you know, And I guess we'll see a few new
names there, won't we.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Yeah, you'd expect to see some new names, a bit
of guys on the fringe, people like Ammonia Nadawa, who
I feel was unlucky not to be in this All
Black's environment. He only had twenty minutes off the bench
in July and has since gone back and played extremely
well for the Steamers. And yeah, you'll see others who
(03:07):
are on the CUSP, guys like Harry Plummer, Josh Lord
and those sort of guys who were in Neil Black
squad as injury cover this year, No Hope and Peter Luckeye.
So it will be very much the next gen All
Blacks All Blacks fifteen. But I guess there's about evolution
(03:29):
and maybe whether some of those guys should be elevated
to this all Black squad. But clearly Wis Robinson is
under pressure. The love the performances six and three to
this point in the year, and three tests against England,
Island and France in fifteen days as a very cool schedule.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Yeah, absolutely, but I guess in a way the All
Blacks are building for the future, for the World Cup
more so than anything else.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
Do you think, Yeah, I think I would have probably
liked to seen a wee bit more evolution this year.
There's been guys like Billy Proctor, who was a standout
on test debut against Fiji and then we didn't see
him at all during the Rugby Championship, so I think
they have missed some opportunities to progress. Wallace a Tit
has been an absolute standout for the All Mix this
(04:16):
year and he only really came into the picture because
of an injury to Ethan Blackheader. Other guys, young guys
in this All Black team, to fu By Courtes Bartima
to Mighty Williams have really performed big time, So it
has been a lot of the youth that has shined
for this all black team, so I would like to
see a bit more of that promoted. But it is
(04:37):
a very grueling end of the year and Scott Robinson
and his team clearly wants experienced guys that have been there,
done that on the big stage and high precious tests.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
Cerd Lee, Well, we've got you here at NPC quarter
Final this coming weekend. Quick fire questions who's going to win?
We'll look at the four matches Wellington Counties.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
Well Counties did a real number on and didn't they
a couple of weeks ago for the Jonah Lomu Trophy
and Pokakoe, So i'd expect Wellington to get their revenge
there before they lose. They're all Blacks to the to
the Northern Tour. But yeah, it'd be interesting to see Dalton,
Popa Lei and and cam roygo go round again for
counties as well.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Battle of the Bays on Saturday afternoon, Bay of Plenty.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Versus Hawks Bay Well, I probably wouldn't get out alive
with Mark the Steamers, but I have really enjoyed their
run this year. They've had a bit of mongol about
them with Richard Watt leading the helm, so yeah, up
the Steamers there.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
Good work, good work Tarananake, why Kato this will be a.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
Good one well indeed Tananaki of course locked away the
shields last weekend. I think they will just sneak it.
Stephen Peterfeester, I'll expect him to go round for them again.
So pretty influential guy to have back in your ranks.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
And Tasman Canterbury.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Battle of the Crusaders, isn't it. Tasman Canary has been
pretty patchy this year, will be they'll be on the
back foot that will be wanting to make amends from
losing the shield last weekend. So back the Marco to respond.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Fantastic Liam, Hey, thanks to your contribution mate, have a
great day. Cheers and all those matches that we mentioned
there with Liam will have commentaries on Gold Sport and
iHeartRadio thanks to Gallagher Insurance partners of Provincial Rugby, all
kicking off on Friday night with at Wellington Counties game
