Speaker 1 (00:00):
Pre Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly Live the Field days
on gold Sport, talking wine on the show Now, as

(00:22):
we always do on a Thursday morning, catching up with
Michael Cooper Morning Michael.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Good morning, Brian.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
Something rather interesting to chat about this week, and you
want to touch on it. It's all about branded wines now,
can you explain please.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
It is a little bit tricky, but it's it's well
worth knowing about. When we'vecup a bottle of wine, typically
it's got a brand and a variety on it, you know.
So it might be something like Braincott of State Malbrosnon Blanc,
in which case, well, the brand is Braincott of State
and the song is the variety. And that's how most

(01:00):
wines are labeled. You know. We think to ourselves, oh,
what do I feel like today. I'm in the mood
for a Pino Gree or I'm in the mood for
a you know, Merlow, right, and so we go and
buy a Pino Degree or a Merlow and so it's
labeled by that variety. But also, of course it has
a brand, which will be the name of the name

(01:20):
of the producer. But this is the sort of slightly
mysterious segment of the wines out there that actually are
not labeled by their great variety. So I'm talking about
wines like Saracen Chieriscuiro or Alix until Les font Rouge. Gosh,
what on earth? What is this? You know, what's it

(01:43):
made from? And and so on. But it's just intriguing
that they don't put the label the varieties on the
front label. Sometimes they do appear on the back label,
sometimes not. But some of these wines are really good,
so it is worth considering buying them.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
Yeah, okay, so let's talk about a couple. Shall we
have some link to the couple?

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Well, like, here's one example that I think is from
a really highly regarded Hawk's Bay produce a red wine,
which of course you know we're in the mood for
at this time of the year's cold weather Eliphant Hill
Hawk's Bay le fon Rouge, and you sort of think,
what on earth is that? It's the twenty twenty one

(02:22):
vintage and it's a blend of six different grape varieties.
So just imagine if they did put all the great
varieties on the front label to be quite a mouthful.
So we just have to think about a wine like
this as being a blend of different grapes. It's mostly Merlow, Serrah, tempornio,
and melback, and it's also got splashes of Cabinet sauvenot

(02:45):
and Cabinet fronc. So I think when you taste it,
you're not really thinking, Okay, can I identify the flavor
of this variety or that variety. I think what's important
is just to think, is this a delicious red wine?
And it certainly is. It's full colored, it's full bodied,
it's vibrantly fruity. It's got generous, strong, plummy, spicy flavors.

(03:08):
It's got good complexity, and you can buy it for
anywhere between twenty dollars and twenty six dollars. That's Elephant
Hill Hawks Bay leafont Rouge twenty twenty one.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
It's something a little different, all right, can get another one.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
Well, And he's another Hawks Bay red that I think
is really good value. It's from a producer that's not
yet particularly well known. They're an emerging producer in Hawk's
Bay Shed five thirty estate, Hawks Bay Woll Shared Bread
twenty twenty one. It's a really good value at twenty

(03:47):
seven dollars. Now, this one is made from Bordeaux great varieties, Merlow,
Malbeck and Cabinet Sagnon. It's got rich color, rich flavor.
It's got lovely right concentrated flavors of berries, plums and spices,
even a hint of licorice, which when I get licorice

(04:08):
as a component of the flavors, I always think it's
made from very ripe grapes. And it's got lovely ripe
supple tenants. So it's delicious now. And that's shed five
thirty Estate hawkes Bay woolshed reread one.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
Well there we go. It's a we wind lesson today.
A couple of wines worth trying the little different Michael,
great to catch up. Let's do it next week. Good right,
Michael Cooper, haw Guru of Wine. Here on gold Sport
