Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the sports field to the shearing shed. It's the
Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on gold Sport a
long time.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Ago, way back. Well, they want to drink Whilestein along
came by the name of Wonderful. It's time to talk
beer on the show now and catch up with our
beer guru, Michael. Michael Donaldson joins us. Of course, he
has a specialist beer magazine called The Pursuit of Happiness

(00:33):
and that's what we do on the show with Michael Morning.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Michael, Hey, Brian, how going very well?

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Thank you. We've chopped around the country over the past
week or two or three talking about beers from different regions,
and I believe Queenstown is quite an active market.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
Ah yeah, Queenstown is you know, we talked about won
Oca a little while ago, how many breweries there, and
Queenstown's pretty well represented as well. And probably the douie
of the Queenstown be a scene is alta Jet Bruin.
And for people that know Queenstown, they're at the Frankton

(01:09):
end of the lake, so not in this sort of
city part of it, but down the other end. But
it's a really cool location. Like they've got a great
little tap room there and you can access it by
the lake Front walkway, or if you like, you get
off the plane at Queenstown Airport and just walk straight
there like that. It's really close to the airport. But

(01:34):
it's a beautiful spot. You know. They like to say
they've got one of the most scenic tap rooms in
the country, and it's hard to argue with them, and
you know, I wanted to. You know, they've they've sort
of been going strong in the region for a while
and you don't see many of their beers outside that
sort of Lower South Island area, and it's because it's

(01:57):
like a lot of them. It's a sort of a
tourist destination and you go there for the experience. But
they have just released in a canned format and they
have a few cans and you can buy them on
their web store. But it's Queenstown Lager and it's pretty simple.

(02:17):
And when I say simple, that's not a derogatory thing.
That's a good thing, like simple, straightforward, four percent light,
really easy drinking, and you know, it's got a really
kind of cool label on it. They don't really could
work with the with the design of the can, so Yeah,
Queenstown lager from altitude brewing is sort of at the

(02:39):
taste of the South, the taste of.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
The mountain, I imagine you're down that way. As you said,
we've talked about Wanaka and quite an active scene there
as well. I mean they get lovely pure water. I
suppose that has something to do with it, does it?

Speaker 1 (02:51):
Well? For some of them, it does. You know, most
breweries operate on what they call it town water supply,
like we did talk of Lakeman the other week, having
the direct water coming up from under the farm, and
there are still there are still some breweries that have
access to their own water. You know, it was a

(03:12):
big thing for Spats when it was set up down
there in Duneda. They had a natural spring which they
drew water from. They of course they aren't that in
walk because they make so much better. But yeah, so
water is important, like it's the main ingredient, you know.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
Yes, absolutely so Queenstown the breweryl did you do they
How many other sort of bruise do they do?

Speaker 1 (03:35):
Oh? They do a huge range. Like probably their most
popular one is a hazy pale ale called fled Dog,
And I think that just goes and goes and goes
in that tap room there. They put a lot of that.
But the other thing they do, which people are looking
to be a little bit more adventurous, they have a

(03:56):
series of bears that they call jam sessions, and the
jam is kind of a reference to like raspberry jam,
apric pop jam. So there beers that they're sort of
pumped full of fruit and intense fruity, kind of a

(04:18):
little bit sour as well because the sweet and sour
goes quite well. So if you're down there, try it.
They'll have a jam session beer on tap. You know,
they change the flavors so they're quite adventurous. You know,
I did talk about their lagger because I think it's
it's extremely good.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
Queenstown will look out for a Queenstown lager from Altitude Brewery.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
Yeah. Absolutely, they're the one that is really well known
as the Mischievous Kia. The Mischievous Kia, I Pa, that's
a great beer as well.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
I like the title of it. Good on your Michael,
nice to catch up. We'll do it again next week
and take.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Care the furious bar that the hole in the wall
and oh wonder you convict it's party been

Speaker 2 (05:03):
There we go talking beer with Michael Donaldson here on
the country Sport Breakfast on a gold sport
