Speaker 1 (00:00):
Whether it's gum boots or rugby boots. The country Sport
Breakfast has you covered on gold Sport, your home of
live commentary. We're talking international cricket now on the show,
where the black Caps are set to play Sri Lanka
in the first of two cricket tests. First ball set
to be bold just after five this afternoon, New Zealand
time out of Gore joining us on the show this morning.

(00:22):
Black Caps all around a Mitch Saturday morning. Mitch, how
are you very very well? Thank you? More importantly, how
are you and the team?

Speaker 2 (00:31):
I'm good. Team's good. You know, nice to have some
sunshine here and gool and a few good trainings before
the game, and.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
I guess it'll be nice to maybe get some cricket
in because if we go back to the frustrations of
last week against Afghanistan, talk us through that. What was
that like?

Speaker 2 (00:49):
It was bizarre. Yeah, we had a bit of a
we had a good lead and actually to the game
and then you know that the outfield wasn't was an
ideal for the first couple of days, but the sun
was out, which felt quite strange. And then we're three
days of good duke after that. So I didn't get

(01:10):
a hell of blow out of the aliter, but we
got here and had some good trainings and boys.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Already, I suppose was the team even going to the
ground by about day three or four? Did you still
go to the ground each day?

Speaker 2 (01:25):
First two days we went down and then the only
time we went back on day five was to pack
our bags up to go back to the hotel.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
There was a lot of cards played, Was there any cards?

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Plenty of hallway cricket was a playing some spin in
the hallways, But yeah it was. I mean it was
a bit of a frustrating time, but I can't do
much with the rain.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
Well, you're now in Sri Lanka. You're facing a Sri
Lankan team fresh off a Test when in England ten
or so days ago. So what did the Sri Lankan
side do well that you'll have to watch out for.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
Yeah, I guess they're a master in these conditions. They
play a lot of test cread here and gool and
I guess the nature of the pitch. It can spin
a little bit, but it's usually a bit of a
bit of a grind and they do that so well.
You know, the spinners just seem to operate all day
and don't give you much and kind of wait for
a false shot. So yeah, we got to kind of

(02:22):
try and build these partnerships with the bat and then
hopefully it starts to spin later on we can take
some pulse.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
This test is unusual in a way because it's actually
a six day test, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
Yeah, well, I don't think many people have come across
this before, but it could be good time in three
days and the dirt and then have a day off.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
It's sort of like, yeah, a day off in the
middle of a Test match.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Yeah, it's going to be strange. Hopefully we can bat
for two days and bowl them out for a day
and then have a day off and then come back
six days. I mean that's going to be.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
It's regarding what their elections over there, something isn't there.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Yes, I think you know, no sport is on the
election day, which I think it's a Sunday here, et
cetera Sunday. So yeah, and then I guess on the flip,
we've got only got two days between, you know, the
first and second Test, so I don't think there'll be
much going on between those two days.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
The black Caps have secured the services of Sri lank
and great ring going here. I mean, what difference has
he made to the side.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
Yeah, I guess he's uh, he showed us in his
career what he can do it gool and he loves
this ground and it's been quite nice to you know.
I guess have a have a guy who's done it
for a long time and in these conditions to you know,
pick his brain and give us some insights. He's been
really he's been really good. Actually, you know, for our
spin bowling unit, we've got you know, four or five

(03:48):
guys here, so he's guys are trying to pick his brain.
And you know, he actually bowled me in the nets yesterday.
That was a bit of a throwback.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
What was that like? How was that?

Speaker 2 (03:58):
Yeah, he's still got it, miss much.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
Forty six years old. Aid's still able to do it. Boy,
He's got a ton of wickets. I think four hundred
and thirty three wickets, So pretty impressive, isn't he.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Yeah. I think he got about one hundred of them
at Goold as well, so he knows that a bowl here.
So I think if we don't don't take many wickets,
you'll be upstairs won't be happy.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
And this will be a run of five Tests on
the subcontinent. So what are the big challenges of playing
Test cricket on the subcontinent for you guys.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Yeah, I guess it's you know, slightly foreign to what
we're kind of used to, I guess with the pitchers
and the conditions. So it's you know, there's going to
be a bit of toil over the next five games,
but it's nice to I guess, have a run in
the subcontinent here where you can kind of get into it.
And you know, we don't look too far ahead, but
we know how important these next two games are and

(04:51):
gool and then obviously and then two is always a challenge.
But I guess there's a spin bowling unit. We just
it's exciting, but you know there is going to be
trying to play the long game for as long as
you can. And I guess we talk about it could
be slow periods in the match, but can it can
change very quickly, So you know, it's trying to stay

(05:13):
in it for a long time and when it does happen,
it's trying to make the most of it.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
Have you had a chance to have a reasonable inspection
of the pitch.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
Yet yes they had the covers off. You say, it
looks pretty classic, your classic goal track. That looks pretty
like it'll be pretty slow and pretty pretty hard work
over my generally starts to spend a little bit more
as the game goes on. But there will have another
training this afternoon to really see what it looks like,

(05:41):
and I guess make a call from there. But traditionally
it's try a bout once, try bout as long as
you can, and then hopefully it starts to spend well.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
Well, we wish you the very very best of luck, Mitch,
thanks for joining us, and go well.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
Thanks man,
