Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the cricket field to the cow shed. It's the
Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Talking Heartland Football now on the show where it'll be
a special afternoon this Sunday at Auckland's Eden Park. South
Canterbury will be playing their first game at Eden Park
for forty five years up against hadafenu Akapany. Joining us
on the show this morning. South Canterbury head coach Nigel Walsh. Morning, Nigel,
(00:27):
good morning. How exciting is that took us through? How
the opportunity came about? You?
Speaker 1 (00:33):
Well, look we were all getting prepared to go to
levi In and play Horfurvin do Maine, but then they
rang up and asked if we wanted to move to
Auckland and take the game up there. So they must
have got the invite from Auckland Rugby too got the
NB part of the triple heater in Eden Park. So
why wouldn't you Well.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Well, absolutely, I mean Levin de Main or Eden Park.
I mean it wasn't. Probably took your split second and
say yeah, I think we'll do that.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
Yeah, Now, look at the boys are really excited and
it's a good opportunity for both Hartland teams to get
up there and in showcase Heartland rugby as well, so
it'd be a special occasion and.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
A tripleheader as you mentioned. I mean we've got Farapar mccap,
we've got n PC Auckland are playing and also Heartland,
so what a festival of rugby.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
Yeah, we were lucky enough to be part of a
triple header and christ Hutch last year with West Coast
versus buller Kenoby versus Tasman South Keneby versus Mid Canterbury.
So it was all the Crusader region teams playing together
at one park and there was one hell of an
afternoon and it's a good showcase for rugby and four
community rugby and everything together as well. So it was
a really great day and a good good idea. So
(01:38):
we're looking forward to the challenge up there.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Nigel. You've got many supporters flying up for the match.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Yeah, there is a fever bit of chat about it
actually because a lot of people have actually bought their
tickets to go to live in but now they've got
to get to Wellington and fly but further to Hawkland.
But I think they're going to stay there and watch
the Hawks Bay game and then fly up on the
Sunday to come up and watch watch Rush based. So
it's really good. We're really happy with this with the
crowd and the following that we're heaving at the moment,
(02:05):
it's great.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
The worst talk about your opposition hat a Fenua capade.
I mean they can score some points. What did they
put sixty five on one and aff a Bush last weekend?
Speaker 1 (02:15):
What a hell of a hell of a weekend last weekend.
There's some high scoring games and in the Heartland competition
and look Horror for they're going to be hard, they're
going to be tough, they're going to throw over again.
It's like everybody asked us, because everybody's chasing us and
wanting to be the team that upsets us. But we've
got a lot of respect for Horror for Noua. They've
got some very good players there and we're certainly not
(02:37):
taking these guys lightly. You know it's going to be
one one heat of task going up there and taking
them on your game.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Last week that was the epitome of a game of
two halves, wasn't it really? Against North Otago one stage,
you guys were down twenty eight to five, but you
came away with a win forty four thirty one. What
changed from the first after the second? What did you
say to the boys on the shed?
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Now, well, look, we knew North Fotigo were going to
come at us, and it's a surprise. I'm not sitting
in bloody hospital. Is she with a heart monitor on that? Look?
Northotigo come. They played some really good footy. We had
a really bad not a bad start, but a slow
start and we'll put under the pump and in North
Totago took the opportunities and we just had to hold
onto the ball. At no stage did the team we
(03:22):
never lookers are they panicked or looked as though they
were panicking about losing the game. They had a lot
of composure and we got a couple of messages out
there getting the ball, hanging on to it, creating phases,
five six phases and the holes were coming. So yeah,
it was yeah, twenty eight five down. I was suddenly
gone warm. Just could be the day. But the boys
(03:43):
showed a lot of character and a lot of resilience
and a lot of composure and fort their way back
in the game and come through well, Like she was
a hell of a comeback. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
Absolutely. My producer Mark's been doing the stats on you
guys for South Canary. Your last loss was October the twelfth,
twenty nineteen against West Coast, which is a four year,
eleven months and seven days ago, which I think works
out to be eighteen hundred and four days. That's quite
a record, mate.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
Yeah, it is. And look, everybody talks about it and
everybody comments about it, and look, we're very proud to
have that record. But you know, the old cliche is
something that we don't actually concentrate on. It's not Hayley's
keep this legacy going. It's about week by week and
it's about going out and doing a sales proud, doing
a province proud, and doing a family's crowd and expressing
(04:31):
the players, getting them to play the game that they
want to play, and to give them the opportunity out
there and express themselves.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Well, I mean, what's the secret to that kind of record?
Is there any secret? I mean, the boys turn up,
they're all amateurs after work on training days. You're there
as an amateur, and what's the secret?
Speaker 1 (04:48):
Yeah? Look, I think it's just the connection we've had
and we've had a lot of players that have been
around for a while now as well, so we've had
consistency throughout the group. We deliver all the detail and
get everything right right from the word go. And it's
family orientated. You know, the kids come in on the
bus with us, they come to the chaining sheds with us.
(05:09):
So it's just making sure that we have that really
relaxed atmosphere, a good culture around everybody. And look, we
let the team have a lot of say as well
and how they want to play, and you know, we
obviously do get some instructions out there. Obviously last Saturday
we had to get a couple of quick words out
there pretty quickly. But you know, there is no real recipe.
(05:30):
It's about the beliefs and what they want to achieve
and how they want to go about it, and we're
all on the same page.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
Is the depth there is the more younger players coming
through that you're pretty excited about.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
Is you know, we've got a very strong South. Can
we cult side very strong South? Can we be a squad?
We've just taken four or five of those players into
our playing group. They've finished now, so we'll bring them
into our group and they'll train the rest of the
year with us as well. You know, we've probably introduced
five or six new guys into the in the squad
this year, so you know, yeah, like I think they've
(06:03):
got a very good future ahead of them as well
and going forward. So there's some very good players and
a lot of the clubs and that have done a
very good job of recruiting these players into the region.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
So when do you travel up to the Big A.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
So we'll get to training tonight and have a bit
of a run around and get the detail and stuff right,
and then we fly up Saturday morning and I have
a Captain drun up there Saturday afternoon and we've got
a couple of activities lined up in the afternoon as
well and full in the full in the day on Sunday,
and you're ready for kick off someday afternoon.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
So yeah, it's excited for all you guys actually running
out onto Eden Park when you think about all the
great teams that have run out there and now those
guys are going to be running out there.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Yeah. Look, I've been lucky enough to coach up there
with New Zealand Heart and when we played Margaret for
the World Cup, and it's one hell of a stadium
and the boys are going to really enjoy the occasion
and feel the atmosphere and you know, it could be
a bit of an eye out for some of them,
and it also gives them the opportunity to look at hey,
look guys, step forward from here and you could be
playing in one of these stadiums week in, week out.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
Fantastic Nigel, all the very very best for South Canterbury.
Well done mate, and joyce Sunday now.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
I appreciate it and thanks very much and looking forward
to seeing everybody up there.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
Absolute pleasure. Nigel whilsho is the South Canterbury head coach.
What a record this year alone. They've played five one
five although South rather North Otaga almost took them down
last weekend but they got there. It's going to be
a great day on Sunday. Get along to the park
if you can, if you're in Auckland,
