Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, it's time to talk weather on gold Sport now
in the country Sport Breakfast. Something that affects us all.
I saw a story out in social media yesterday was
a forecast to somewhere predicting Christmas Day weather. So a
man who knows what he's talking about when it comes
to weather is Philip Duncan from weatherwatch dot co.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Do on nd morning, Philip, Good morning, how are you doing?

Speaker 1 (00:20):
Good mate? So Christmas Day is still a wee wigh
out twenty nine days to be exact. Can you predict
what the weather is going to be like for Christmas Day?

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Well, I always say all year round for any forecast
that's way too far out to lock in is it's
a mix of summon cloud with the chance of a
shower and a southwester we went. It pretty much sums
up most of the country on an average day.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
I love forecast as you know, you've got a fifty
percent chance of being right, haven't you.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Yeah? Well, I mean probably even lower chances are then circumstances.
But I mean yeah, I actually quite like the Christmas challenge,
not so much to nil the weather for Christmas Day itself,
but to kind of you head around the wear the
pattern that we've got and this year it is it's
a late spring where the pattern it's westerly driven. It's

(01:07):
southwesterly driven. And to those at the top of the country,
rainfall is tapering off. Those of the south that's still around,
but it is tapering off even in the south now,
so we are going into summer.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
That weather tapering off in the south as far as
rainfall is concerned, will please Southland farmers because they have
had so much rain over the last few months, so
it's going to ease up for.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
Them, yeah, it is. It's not perfect for them though,
because it is a southwesterly leaning weather pattern. Basically that
means our weather is coming from the southern Ocean or
coming from south to bus Southland, Fiordland and Westland kind
of shoulder that to the rest of the country. The
good news is they're getting, you know, many more days
of the week that are dry and sunny and fewer

(01:52):
days that are wet. But there is another one coming
this week on Thursday to Southland, another cold front comes
in with a burst of wind and so we're not
out of the woods yet, but there are more days
that are getting better for their mats for sure, and.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
We're keeping a close eye on christ Church because starting
on Thursday we've got the first cricket test between England
and New Zealand. And I noticed Thursday's looking all right,
but it looks like showers for Friday.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
There might be a few showers on Friday. But the
weather is actually coming down on Friday as high pressure
tries to move back in again. So the fingers crossed
that it's not too bad.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
So the North Island things are going to warm up
a bit. Are we going to get some sunshine so
it can go swimming soon.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
It's that weave. The southwest flow is dragging them quite
a bit of cloud out of the Tasman Seat, so
that affects a lot of the North Island unless you're
living in of Hawk's Bay and then you might be
away from that, so the North Island kind of stuck
under that same system. It's much drier in the North
Island now than the South Island, although North Canterbury is
basically in drought, just like parts of Hawk's Bay, so

(02:55):
we are seeing very dry conditions setting in and for
those in the east that is a worry because this
west southwesterly pat and keeps those areas dry.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
Well. Hopefully December we'll see some warmer, sunnier temperatures for
some people.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
That wouldn't upset me, that's for sure. I'm living in Orpland,
so it's been a bit cloudy.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
Yeah, well the same for the Bay of Plenty. Absolutely right.
Hey Philip, nice for that prediction. We'll see what happens
for Christmas, which is in that far away mate.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
Have a good one, awesome YouTube buddy. Thank you.
