The Black Ferns have been upset 29-27 by Ireland in their opening WXV1 encounter in Vancouver.

A 79th-minute try and conversion bouncing over off the upright has seen the underdogs repeat their heroics from the 2014 World Cup.

Ireland scored five tries to New Zealand's three and overcame a second half yellow card to prop Niamh  O'Dowd.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Well, the Blackfans' chances of a made in WXV one
rugby title taking a major hit after a shock loss
to Ireland in Vancouver yesterday. A thrilling final ten minutes
ended with the Irish Irish team winning a converted try
to stash twenty nine to twenty seven victory. Joining us
on the show this morning to look back at the
shock lost. Our expert commentator with Elliot yesterday, sam.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Ward Money, Sam, good morning, how are you great?

Speaker 1 (00:36):
Mate? Did you see that one coming?

Speaker 2 (00:38):
No? I didn't. I didn't. I thought it was going
to be a test switch in Irish what it was,
but I thought that the Black Fans were going to
be able to I suppose flip the switch for about
twenty to go and really put the game to bed,
but not to be. I thought the Irish were outstanding.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
What went wrong?

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Sam?

Speaker 1 (00:57):
I mean even the tab had Ireland I think at
twenty one dollar to win.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
I think in Irish rugby, I haven't seen a heap
of their women's team, but I think in Irish rugby
has done such a good job of filtering down systems
and processes, and nusafora oversaw that Joseph it was over there.
But I think they've done a real good job of
the line in their coaches through the different programs, And
what I saw yesterday and the Irish team was really

(01:22):
nice balance around how they were playing. Early in the
game they were really shaky, their scrum was pretty strong,
line out was really shaky, and they couldn't really strike
off first phase ball. But what I did notice when
the game position they put together a few phases, they
made really good decisions around when to change the point
of attap shifted to the edge or put it on

(01:44):
the toe in behind the Black fans. So the balance
of play impressed me yesterday.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
And I saw a couple of highlights on TV last
night with the handling areas with the Black Ferns as
well that weren't very good, were they. No.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
I found it interesting that they were sending up quite
deep off lineout strike and even in phase play the
Black friends were quite deep. And obviously you want to
be winning collisions and generating that front football so you
can play moving forwards but to me it looked like
they were just really keen to throw the ball out
the back a couple of times out the back door

(02:18):
and get the ball to the wings. And with good reason.
You've got two in Ja Corlo on those wings. But
I think they could have done a better job of
earning the rights through the middle of the park and
just kicking the door. And if you will to generate
that forward momentum before playing out wide, can you.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
See wholesale changes ahead of the next game or panic
button shouldn't be pushed in. I mean, I think the
next game is England, isn't it next? Next Monday?

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Yeah, I mean we know how England players, there's scrums
come in their malls coming And I think, to be honest,
I thought the way that the Black fans rolled the
bench early in that second half, with Luca Villiko and
Kaluna Valley coming off the bench, I thought that a
made our pack bigger, stronger, and I thought they bought

(03:04):
really impact. So if it was me, I would possibly
expect to see it, maybe a change up front in
the front row, maybe in the tight five Bremna. And
for her sister, obviously she was celebrating her twentieth game yesterday,
but I think maybe older sister more experience, and maybe
just starch up that pack a little bit.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
Black Funds coach Ellen Bunting and his coaching team, I mean,
they've got six days to I guess turn the team
around before facing England, who they played in a warm
up game and they were at the back door on
that one before they came back. So you know, England
a tough und.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
They absolutely tough, and I mean they've been professional for
a long time. To be fair, the Black Friends got
some awesome coaches in there, but I would suggest that
their biggest job this week is just getting the Black
Funds all on the same page. This is how we're
going to start the game, this is how we're going
to play the game, and this is our plan A,

(04:00):
Plan B, Plan C, and just getting people on the
same page so that whether they get on the front
fot early or whether they put under a little bit
of pressure, everyone is sort of working in the same
direction as them and understands what each other's trying to do.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
Six days to turn it round, and then we're basically
a must win situation, aren't.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
We Absolutely every test matches, but if you're going to
take that table seriously, then you've got to put points
on the board. That's for sure.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
Insane. Being a former North Harbor assistant coach, big weekend
for them. Can they make the top eight?

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Mate? They absolutely can. I haven't. I haven't pulled out
the calculator just yet. But I mean I called that
game on Sunday and I wasn't sure what to expect.
I knew that North Harbor can light it up, but
I just didn't expect it to happen at that time,
especially off the back of their tough Wednesday game against

(04:54):
Taranaki and the game against northm where they got put
to the sword. But I mean, if they have license
to play and they can use that turnover ball to
attack like they did on Sunday, they can match it
with anyone. Again I mentioned about the Black fans. It's
just a case of North Harbor being on the same page,

(05:15):
they having a license to play and lighting it up.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
And what did you make of the AB's performance improved
on the weekend?

Speaker 2 (05:21):
Yep? Absolutely. I joined the commentators in celebrating the points
scored in the last twenty minutes. So that's our monkey
off the back, I thought, I thought the bench was fantastic.
The lights of somebody William's coming off, adding size and
strength in putting points on the score board was awesome.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Fantastic. Well, Sam, I appreciate your input. Thank you so much.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
No, it's great to chat.

Speaker 1 (05:46):

lost loss to Ireland yesterday.
