The Country Sport Breakfast Netball short Session with a Von
Willering go Gold Gold.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Sport Constellation Cup, crushing Australia sixty one forty three in
the third Test in Perth. I'll do that again, sixty
one forty three. We led by two goals at the
break before dominating the second half thirty three seventeen and
winning by eighteen goals. Joining us on the show this
morning form of Silver Firans coach now Gold Sport commentator

(00:28):
Von Willarding Morning of vonn.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
Why are you laughing? It's good morning. It's an interesting
When we won that first Test by forteen goals, everyone
is going, what is going on here? We went over
to Australia for the third Test, I mean in front
of their home crowd and we did them and we
did we did them by eighteen goals? Would you believe?

Speaker 2 (00:51):
So what's happening with the Silver Ferns of onon? What
are you different team from when they took on England.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
We've got to look at it, yeah both ways. Actually
it's interesting, Like you hear them say, oh, we've been
working towards this for two years. I don't quite buy that,
because then they should have put on a better performance
against England. Absolutely, the Ferns have really grown in confidence
off the court. I think they've become a collective unit.
I don't like the way they talk about being a

(01:21):
pack of dogs. I just would like to say, you
know that they've just got and even aggression. I don't
mind aggression so much, but certainly they are far more
working together as a team. That was very evident from
on in the game and that Third Test when Australia
made their first substitution late in the first quarter, the

(01:41):
Ferns just cheered out on court. So obviously that was
something they had worked towards to make sure that it
was Australia that made the first substitution. Now the Ferns
are guilty in the England series of making lots of changes.
This is a total reversal. Now the Firs stayed with
the same domination. Obviously they were going for a result

(02:03):
and Australia they were just found wanting in all areas
of court. And you know, there was not one player
and that's one of the problems with Australia at the moment.
There isn't someone there that acts as a leader and
says follow me. This is the standard that we will play.
And even their captain Watson, you know, she was taken
off and you know it's a situation where who is

(02:25):
Australia going to be putting on for that last Test.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Australia's third quarter they had a meltdown. They lost that
eighteen eighteen nine, didn't.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
They yep, yep. And the third quarter is normally the
one where the Ferns tend to choke a little bit.
So when that happened eighty nine, I'm going okay. On
New Zealand had the game won. I actually felt that
they were going to win it right from the start,
just by the way they were playing in comparison to Australia.
Australia was playing what I called catch up nepple the

(02:55):
whole time. But the Ferns after that third quarter, they
went on and carried on their business in that last
quarter and won that last quarter also very convincingly, fifteen
to eight. And it was interesting because Australia, well the
coach as well, but also the players. I'm under tremendous
pressure right now because they're not standing up and delivering.

(03:17):
They talk about it, they talk about the Australian way,
how they want to play with speed on attack, you know,
and defensively, well, defensively in New Zeala is showing them
how to play the Australian way at the moment. But
some of the substitutions are questioned, like Garvin, their goal shooter,
who I thought was actually playing pretty well. She got
twenty six out of twenty eight and then was taken off.

(03:40):
And then Colan came on, who normally is quite a
confidence shooter. She only got three out of seven. So
certainly you look at that and go what's going on there?
And yes, Berger and Jackson they are really you know,
taking it to those shooters, particularly when they are shooting,
because Jackson's got a tremendous reach and I look at that,

(04:00):
go why don't they screen for one another? But the
Australians at the moment are just playing in isolation. And
I know we want to focus on the Ferns, but
you've also got to respect Australia and where they sit
at the moment. And yes, the Ferns are playing well,
but the Australians are really playing quite poorly at the
moment and.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
Not a good look. Your captain being benched. Are they
the Aussie captain was benched together, wasn't she as you.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
Mentioned, Yeah, absolutely, you know, And defensively they again went
to the bench and they bought on the youngster in
Alice and again to combat Grace Neweki. They're focused so
focused on her, it's unreal. I understand why she got
forty seven out of fifty. And yet if the Ferns
weren't quite sure where to deliver the ball, obviously it

(04:44):
went to Grace. Nowiki, my only concern with the Ferns
if Grace wasn't part of the picture, how would they
fare defensively? They would still go really well. I think
that combination's working great together, but I still have a
bit of a concern how much of our alliance we
have on Grace Deawiki. Having said that, listen, if you've

(05:04):
got that big target in the back, why not utilize
And I totally agree it's about playing for the moment
and right now, absolutely they are totally result driven. What
I liked about the third Test though, and I was
critical in the second Test, Berger and Jackson were heavily,
heavily penalized in that second Test, and I've said openly,

(05:24):
you know, it's about surely we still want the skills
of the game to come through. Yes we talk about
being mongrels and working as a pack whatever, but it's
still about the skills of the game. And Dame nol
and Carua also indicated that they had far less penalties
in that third Test and they actually went out looking
for intercepts and that's what they're known for in the

(05:45):
past and that's what I like to see again. Kate Heffnon,
Kate Heffernan was very dominant on a center pass off
attack and I look at that and I'm going, why
are the Australians not citing that And in the past
they would have And to me, I look at Australia.
They've got Plan A and if that deviates from that,
they're in trouble. So, you know, the fourth Test, I

(06:06):
think it's it's there obviously for the Ferns. Definitely for
the Ferns to take again because Australia this is desperation stuff.
They can talk it up and say we're going to
play the Australian way, but you know they're not. Whether
that's the Ferns doing or the Australians just are confused
in the processes that they're trying to achieve so unbelievable.

(06:28):
Who would have thought fourteen goals eleven goals and you
know the last test eighteen goals. And even if you
look at the attempts, New Zealand had sixty seven attempts,
Australia fifty five. I mean, you have a look at
that one. They couldn't get the ball to their shooters.
But also they just weren't successful, and we know Australian

(06:49):
shooters normally, normally when they have ball in hand, they
are successful. Even Dwyer fourteen out of twenty, they didn't
even have Austin and the starting twelve last test, so
you know here it's a zero for her. So again
really going to be interesting to see who's going to
be playing for them in the last Test. For the Ferns,

(07:10):
I think they will start off strong again exactly. I'd
say they go the same combination, but and you indicated
that earlier. I do believe that they will put on
maybe Warmsley for a small period of time. I think
Mason and O'Brien will go on at some stage for
the last Test.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
She'd be marvelous if we win that one for Zip,
wouldn't it. You've got the call tomorrow night, so we
look forward to it.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
Ivonne, you and me both. It'll be great.
