Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good country sport, breakfast netball court session with a Von
Willering go Gold gold Sport.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
All right, what a what a court session last night
in Auckland, Silver Ferns delivering another dominant display over the Diamonds,
winning the second Constellation Cup Test sixty three fifty two.
They lead the Formats series now till to nil. She
was on the call last night with Malcolm Jordan on
Gold Sport and Von Willering joins us how good was

(00:29):
that of vonn ha ha?

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Yeah? Incredible and yet the situation who would have thought,
I mean, how often do we talk about the wounded
Australians how they come back. But we needed the Ferns
to step up, and in last night's game many for credibility.
I mean a lot of us were saying that was
wonderful in the first Test, but we want to to
a repeat performance and see if they can do it.
But really, where they've made their biggest change the Ferns

(00:55):
is actually off the court and you can see their
whole and they talk about it as well, and their
demeanor has changed and you could actually see that the
moment they arrived at their bench and they walked in proud,
you know, and smiling and laughing together and I look
at that and I got yep, and that's all great,
and you know that's a togetherness, but you still need
to follow that up with performance. And would you believe

(01:16):
the first quarter seventeen eleven to the Ferns and you
know they've looked at it obviously, what's their biggest asset
and it's got to be Grace and Awaki. I mean,
you can't get away to get away from that, you know,
and you've got the situation but where the mid court
players are really feeding her extremely well. And Australia had
no answers. They've got no Plan B. And Western and

(01:40):
Bruce came into the series and I spoke about that
pre series and I said, oh, you know, they they're
the two big heavies defensively, but they have actually not
made an impact all at all and they are coming
off injuries and then be be fair about that and
they just not match fits. You know. I have a
couple of concerns with the first I think it's wonderful,
don't get me wrong, and boy were really taking it

(02:02):
to Australia and Australia just does not have that Plan B.
But postmatch and I think was Echinasio actually and said,
oh yeah, you know, we have got players that do
the word the dirty work, you know, they they're the
fighters in the team. And then Dave Nolan came on
after that and she said, yeah, yeah, that's all fine,
but it's got to be within the skills of the game.

(02:23):
And I'm totally with her on that. You know, it's
still about the skills of the game. And if you
have a look at it, they end in circle. We
had a heck of a high penalty count in the
defensive circle with both Berger and Jackson, and I look
at both those players and I'm going, yep, you're doing
your work. You're really taking it through the diamond shooters.

(02:45):
But having said that, and that's again about the skill factor,
I would like them to come out and look for
intercepts and both of those players are capable of doing that,
and I don't like seeing them standing beside on a
penalty count, and that is something firms do need to change.
So whilst you can go into a game with a
lot of aggression and confidence and that's absolutely fine, we've

(03:09):
still got to remember, you know, each player skills out
on court as well.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Dave Nolan come out and said there are still improvements
to be made in the team as well, which is
encouraging in a way, isn't it.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
Yeah, And like the only only teams are only players
that she changed. We're in the mid court and if
they have a look at it, really there's not much
separating O'Brien, Poy and Gordon. I mean that combination is
really starting to establish itself. And when you look at them,
you know they got speed through the court both on
attack and defense. But mainly the main difference is they

(03:40):
really feed Grace and a Wiki. Well, I cannot believe
how Australia is so focused on Grace Andweki. I mean
you have a look at it. The in circle they
double marking her at times and I'm going, look, the
tighter you go on Grace Andweki, the more she is
going to love it and score from it. You know,
they are against a tall shooter. You need to get

(04:02):
off them so at least that the attackers don't have
a target in which to throw the ball to it
and that just surprises me. And Bruce in particular spoke
about it how they have to look for the ball
outside the circle and yet they're not doing it. You know,
it's interesting and on attack, wow, you have a look
at it. Jackson has got that arms over. Sometimes I'm

(04:23):
going jump the ball, but she doesn't need to because
when she puts arms over both Garvin Dwyer and Austin,
you know, it really has an effect on them. And
they are very reluctant shooters from anything from about point
of well point nine of a meter from the post.
And I'm going, why don't you people screen for one another?
They did it on a couple of occasions, but they
weren't consistent. So Ferns played as a total unit and

(04:47):
Diamonds played as individuals. And that will that change? Yes,
I think the Diamonds will get better, but the Ferns
now know that there are forced to reckon with, you know,
whereas in I think in the in the previous games,
and you know, someone asked me, is the third place
standing in world Nepple affecting them? I don't think that

(05:07):
is it. I just think they that the tiny Jamison
trophy affected them and the fact they lost them, and
that's an important trophy. I think they soul searched after
that and they have come out now and each player
is delivering their full potential and that's what's required, whereas
the Diamonds ain't doing that.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
So test on Sunday in Perth, it'll be a different
story there in front of a partisan Australian crowd, won't it.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
Yeah, it's interesting. I looked at that. I'm going, why
is the crowd making such a difference and the answer
that yes they do. I mean you can say it's
ex same called surface, same umpires, and the umpires themselves.
I thought they were consistent, but you know, will they
alter to not to the difference in crowd don't know.

(05:54):
I think fifty to fifty calls could go Australia's way,
whereas a fifty fifty calls certainty where our way in
the first two tests. So that could change. But yeah,
you've got a situation now that Australian pride. They've been wounded, absolutely,
they've been wounded, you know, and in front of their
home crowd, listen to Shella, they're parochial and they will

(06:15):
state as they see it and that's the Australian way.
And I guess that's where we've changed slightly. We're starting
to say that as well. So yeah, they have to improve.
It's as simple as that, you know. And Marekovitch is
in a situation now they go, whoa, you know, what's
happening to us? Now? Last year they lost the first
two tests, but not by these margins, and I think

(06:36):
that's probably the main thing that's concerning them right now.
I mean last night eleven goals. I mean, who would
have thought against the Australian Diamonds you would have that
and this is going in the record book. So yeah,
they're under tremendous pressure. So you know, coming on to
the court, the Ferns are going to come out there
with pride and they're going to come out with confidence,
and the Diamonds are going to say, whoa, you know,

(06:58):
we've got to come to the party.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
You know.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
The thing in their favor though they did not play
well last night, and certainly the Ferns were responsible for
a lot of that, but also honestly some of the
ball they threw away. It was just unbelievable breaking on
a seem to pass up. I think Austin was guilty
of that about two or three times short pass although
that happened both ways, you know, And there was one

(07:23):
stage Jamie Lee Price got a ball and she just
dropped it out of court and I'm going, Jeeves, that
just is not the Australian way, and the Australian public
will not tolerate that. You know. Shooting stats, you know,
shooting stats. Ferns at sixty nine attempts and the Diamonds
still even the way they played, still had fifty nine
attempts there. So, yeah, the Ferns just took it to

(07:45):
them in their first quarter and yeah just basically went
on from there. So in Australia for once is under
tremendous pressure.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
Lovely Yvonne loved a chat and we look forward to
that match on Sunday. Thank you so much. Evonne Willering
joining us here, yes, Sunday night out of Perth and
then the fourth and final could be the decider next
