Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Coast Breakfast Bonus Podcast with Tony Jason Sam.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Thanks for listening to our Breakfast Bonus podcast. Today we're
joined by a wonder all human being, Graham Norton. Gosh,
he's done some things and he's even done another thing
another book.

Speaker 3 (00:13):
Five books now, yeah, five books all written from a
female perspective, and we have so many.

Speaker 4 (00:18):
Questions about that, including we need to get you into
a hobby.

Speaker 5 (00:22):
Are you all doing good thing?

Speaker 2 (00:24):
It's got us venaman that listince we caught up. In fact,
last time we caught up, Graham, you told us that
you were eating a Scotch dig on your way home
from the supermarket, and you begged us not to tell
you your husband. So we've we've kept the secret. It
didn't get out of Hope.

Speaker 5 (00:36):
I think that did end up in the press.

Speaker 6 (00:41):
It certainly ended up in the press here. I remember
that it was great.

Speaker 4 (00:45):
But we thought, like, if you're going to get into
a little bit of meat when you shouldn't, there's nothing
better than a Scotch dig. Though it is it a
regular thing.

Speaker 7 (00:53):
They really are lovely. What I love about the miss
They're so mysterious. I have no idea how you would
make a Scotch egg on the runny yoke?

Speaker 5 (01:01):
How do you do that?

Speaker 4 (01:02):
That's that's ridiculous. Come on, hell, how can it be?
Don't you just wrap an egg and some and some
would you think about it? Yeah?

Speaker 7 (01:09):
If it's a soft spoiled egg and then you deep
that fry it? How come it doesn't cook? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Not have this?

Speaker 4 (01:18):
Have you never considered the bomble esca, which is effectively
fried ice cream.

Speaker 6 (01:22):
That's just from a guy that doesn't cook anything.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
So speaking of speaking of someone who does, though, how
good friend Nigella lawcense she was beriffed when she ended
your your your latest book, Frankie.

Speaker 5 (01:34):
So I think it means she was sad it was over.
Oh my god, no kind of like, oh.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
My god, I heard him a favor of reading. No, no, no,
so brilliantly in high praise for such a wonderful woman
to congratulations.

Speaker 7 (01:53):
No, I mean it was really nice. This book, Franky,
seems to be landing a bit different. People seem to
be really keyed on it. I mean, I've got away
with it so far.

Speaker 5 (02:03):
This is book five, but this one people do seem
to be enjoying it a bit more.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
Yeah, hang on a minute you say this one hits different.
All your others are best sellers and winning awards everywhere.
Don't try and tell us that the others won't good.

Speaker 4 (02:15):
But why is it heading differently?

Speaker 2 (02:17):
What's different about it?

Speaker 5 (02:18):
I don't know. Here's the thing. Maybe it's better. I
don't know.

Speaker 7 (02:25):
I mean, it is the fifth one I've written, and
I you know, you hope that. I think the plan
is you might get better at these things.

Speaker 5 (02:32):
So maybe this one is better. I don't.

Speaker 7 (02:36):
I'm not sure, but it's I think it's a more
emotional book.

Speaker 5 (02:40):
It tells kind of a bigger story. It's a story
of a one woman's life, so it's kind of more immersive.

Speaker 7 (02:46):
I think.

Speaker 5 (02:46):
I think you get lost in it a way that
maybe you didn't get lost in the other ones.

Speaker 4 (02:50):
You're an order bugger eight like, in the nicest possible way,
you're running from a female perspective in the nineteen sixties.
Why did you place yourself there?

Speaker 7 (03:00):
And female? Well, I'm very old and very in touch
with my feminine side, even I don't know. I mean,
I like writing about I do like writing from a
female perspective. Most of my books aren't told that way,
and I think it's because you know, women are there

(03:21):
are more interesting. You know, I think the way women
live their lives is more nuanced.

Speaker 5 (03:26):
Boys.

Speaker 7 (03:27):
You know, boys are a bit a bit like dogs
in that way. You know, can I eat it or
you know, you know the rest of the.

Speaker 5 (03:38):
Yeah, as far as we go.

Speaker 7 (03:42):
Whereas I think, because women are dealing with those men,
they navigate life in a much more kind of interesting way.

Speaker 5 (03:49):
And I find that more interesting.

Speaker 6 (03:51):
That's remarkable.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
How many years has it taking you to come to
that realization, because I know a lot of me and
who haven't.

Speaker 7 (03:58):
Well, honestly, I do think being gay helps because then
I'm also dealing with men, you know.

Speaker 5 (04:04):
So I think no one of us.

Speaker 6 (04:08):
Do you think we haven't evolved in that perspective?

Speaker 4 (04:11):
Do you think we're still stuck in the stone ages
of meaning in the way they communicate?

Speaker 7 (04:16):
No, I think I think men wash now in a
way that maybe they didn't before. But you know, there's
a bit of manscaping going on in that face.

Speaker 5 (04:26):
There, So yeah, you've evolved.

Speaker 6 (04:31):
He's not a shining example.

Speaker 5 (04:34):
That's why I'm kind of.

Speaker 4 (04:35):
Taking on the criticisms, to be honest, because to be honest,
I'm not a great communicator and I haven't washed.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
So there you go.

Speaker 5 (04:42):
Well, okay, so sorry I was I was overstating the case.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
You were right the first time.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
G Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
But in the book, there's this delightful, charming, very caring
a guy called Damien who listens a lot and he
happens to be from Ireland. Has Damien based anyway close
to home?

Speaker 7 (04:59):
I mean, he's I mean, it's based on lots of
lot of young Irish people. You know, he left Ireland
because he kind of thought thought he couldn't live his
life here. I'm saying here because I'm in Ireland as
I speak to you, and and so left and went
to London, and certainly.

Speaker 5 (05:15):
That was my experience. I felt like I needed to
get out of Dodge.

Speaker 7 (05:19):
But really I used him because he is the care
for an old woman and because they're from the same
place in Ireland, that kind of is sparks her, kind
of ignites her to start telling her life story to him.
So it was really just kind of a device. I mean,
you know, I don't I did a bit of research

(05:41):
to this book, but there's a lot that you know,
I make things easy for myself as I can.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
I did so prerogative, though, you're allowed to do that, Graham.
I want to know where you're in your life at
the moment. Obviously, the writing books that takes up a
lot of time.

Speaker 4 (05:59):
What is it?

Speaker 6 (05:59):
What is a typic cool week look like for you?
What are you doing? Three stay time?

Speaker 5 (06:04):
I mean when the.

Speaker 7 (06:06):
Chat shows in production, which is that will start at
the end of September. That's really that's the six months
of my life when I've got routine. That's when you know,
I do I get all the biogs on a Tuesday
night that I'm in the office on a Wednesday, and
then I tape it on a Thursday. But I used
to do a radio show then on Saturday and Sunday.
But I've knocked that on the head. So I've yet

(06:28):
to kind of just you know, i haven't been doing it.

Speaker 5 (06:31):
For a while, but I have.

Speaker 7 (06:34):
I've yet got it's basically kind of sink in yet
that I've got my weekends back. I haven't really noticed yet.
I'm looking forward to that.

Speaker 5 (06:41):
The rest of the time, I'm just I'm just, you know,
staring at the wall, drinking wine. What kind of hobby
we need to find?

Speaker 6 (06:50):
Your hobby? What would you what would you give a
toy too. I reckon like CRA's a cyclist. Cyclist is
an archery?

Speaker 7 (06:56):
What is it?

Speaker 3 (06:57):
I do?

Speaker 5 (06:58):
Cycle? Not in like?

Speaker 7 (07:00):
Not humiliating enough to cycle without the why why make
it worse?

Speaker 2 (07:08):
People know exactly who you are. It's the Guyan liker
of riding a bike eating a Scottish dig Graham theory
is me.

Speaker 5 (07:14):
Have you ever been toutored at while cycling?

Speaker 4 (07:17):
Imagine Graham Norton while you're thinking, oh god, I just
tooted it.

Speaker 5 (07:20):
Graham Norton, do.

Speaker 7 (07:22):
You know what? I was cycling along ones and this
guy pulled up alongside me on a bike and went,
can I have a selfie?

Speaker 5 (07:29):
And I went yes, and he chopped the selfie while cycling?
Is that good?

Speaker 2 (07:35):
That's annoying but also and cridity as well. Congratulations on everything.
Ten years ago you won like the best selling book
in Ireland. Here a teen years later with your fifth book, Frankie.
It's bright blue, you can't miss. It's got Frankie on
the cover and the words Graham Norton, by the way,
so it is there.

Speaker 5 (07:52):
It is.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
Congratulations.

Speaker 7 (07:54):
Oh, Sam's coffee looks really on red, but he's a
little in really well.

Speaker 5 (08:03):
On that cover, will get there.

Speaker 6 (08:05):
It's a way to do list.
