Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Coast Breakfast Bonus Podcast with Tony Jason Sam Thanks
for listening to our.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Breakfast Bonus podcast. Today. We're talking about sickness because there's
so much going around in the depths of winter across
New Zealand, and it's been the last few last few winters.
People get smashed a lot. And I guess I'm very
similar to you, Tony. I'm one of those people. I
don't like taking time off, so the same with you.
When you took time off, we knew you were sick.
When I took time off, was like, well and more
than one day. I don't like doing it, but you
have to.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
Yeah, And I often think that we're the mugs for
having their attitude, you know, Like I look around and
there's actually been a few scary stories in the media
lately about people that you know, had some very minor
symptoms and a few days later died of the flu.
And another situation where someone didn't follow the advice of
the doctor after coming out of hospital and they needed

(00:46):
it up back in there. So I just I don't know.
I know we're supposed to. I know COVID was meant
to have made us prioritize our health. But I still
don't necessarily think that message is getting through. And I
have to say I've lapsed. I was vigilant around COVID.
But ask me if I've got my lttus COVID jab. No,
I haven't. Not even I got a food jab because
it was here at work. But the rest of my

(01:07):
family hasn't it. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
I used to have the hand sanitizer in the car
and every time I petrol stations, for example, I get
in the car and sanitize my hands. I don't do
that anymore.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
That was before COVID.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
You did that, okay, you got mesked to do it,
and shopping trolleys, but no. And then I think what
COVID did as well, We kind of we forgot how
bad the flu can be. So covid it was not COVID.
You're okay, but COVID's bad.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
But no flu.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
Still there's people die from the flu every year in
New Zealand, and we forget that.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
And there's a reason why no one's ever cure with
the flu, because it just keeps changing and morphing into
a different strain, and it freaks me out. I have
to say, as apparent, when I think Okay, at what
moment do you You don't want to be the hypochondriac parent
that just at the slightest sniffle takes them in and
then they just go, oh no, they don't know any
antibotos that don't need anything. But you also don't want

(01:54):
to be the one that misjudges a sore throat and
that becomes strip throat or something.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
I totally agree. But also you don't want to be
that parent or will be that kid at school who's
got you know, candlewicks can and they're still being sent
to school. I'm like, what where are your caregivers at
that point that you keep the child home?

Speaker 3 (02:12):
Do you know what? I think? Schools and dayciars and
childcare centers have got quite good now, and at the
slightest sign of a temp or a runny nose, they
will ring and say you need to come and pick
your kid up good And that infuriates some people. But
I would rather than are on the side of caution
in that respect.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
Because you know what it's like. I mean, if you've
had kids go through the whole childcare system, you know
that daycares and primary schools and even high schools and
stuff can be a Petri dish and they bring that
home and then what happens, You will get knocked down
at home.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
Yeah, And I just don't think there's ever any prizes
for being a hero a like. I think back to
a few weeks ago, remember when I had gastrop and
I didn't know I had gestro. I went to Beers
and knowing that Sam wasn't going to be on the
show the next day, so it's just you and I JS.
Oh no, it was just just Sam and I and Samuel,
you will already suckle away and at you know, I

(03:01):
felt a bit tired, so I went to bed early,
but I think I just missed John the chat cool,
We're all sorted and done everything. And then I woke
at I think two three am, and I know it
was one am, and I was in such like I
had such a saw tummy. But even then, and I
said to my husband, I think I might like spew
and I don't. I don't. I'm not a spewer at all.

(03:22):
So it takes a lot for me to get to
that point. And I was still in denial at that point,
and I was freaking out that I might not be
there for the show. But I said to me, It'll
probably just be one spew and then I'll be fine,
And that's that's the default. I think sometimes your mind
goes to, like, in what world if I'm spewing in
the night, am I going to work at four am?

Speaker 2 (03:40):
With me? So I was waiting because I had like
I got like a flu thing. But then I got laryngitis.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
I remember I.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Actually came to work that morning. I couldn't talk and
you guys see me home, I know you can't talk well.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
So essentially this whole podcast has been just to let
you know that you don't get any hero metals being
like Jason and I and next time we're not feeling well,
and or if you're just mentally done, it's actually okay
to take a day off. You have ten sick days
a year for a reason. It's not like you don't
get an award for the person who didn't take the
most sick day.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
You're sorry. And if you can't get ano adoptor surgery
or adoptor's waiting room because they're slammed at the moment,
you can always call Healthline because that's free and it's
an eight hundred number. Just give them a bus. Don't
be brave about it, don't be tired, to be tough,
don't be mart at cope.
