Daly Cherry-Evans has confirmed he's leaving the Manly Sea Eagles, without saying where he's moving to.

Is it more likely the clubs most capped player will retire, or move to a new team?

Australian Correspondent Adam Peacock answers that question, discusses the Panthers loss, and breaks down the Socceroo's road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from newstalk zed B.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Time to catch up with our Australian correspondent, Adam Peakgck.
You're a Manly fan. Of course, Adam Daily Cherry Evans
is leaving the Sea Eagles. What's the background to all
of this?

Speaker 3 (00:22):
Goodness? Piney, Hello, Saga weird. One of the weirdest stories
I think I've ever seen in any sport is that
Daily Cherry Evans when on television on Monday night and
said I don't know if I'm going to play next
year or retire, but what I do know is I
won't be at Manly. That he didn't say that the real,

(00:44):
an actual reason why he didn't want to play at Manley,
and everyone's just then jumped in conclustions. The weird thing
is with Daily, I don't think he computed it too well.
He goes, I just wanted to knock off the speculation
about where I'd be in twenty twenty six. So I'll
come out and say I'm not playing a Manly. Well,
that's just now kickstarted. Where's he going to play? What
was the bloout with Manly? We get a Friday, today's Saturday,

(01:07):
and there's still no absolute clarity out of what exactly
went down there behind the four walls, all inside the
four walls at Manly. It's just a weird, old story.
But apparently he's going to play tomorrow and he'll probably
rip it up against Parra Mattera and play well.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Melingdales would where would he go? And okay, let's break
this down into parts. How strong a possibility that he
retires at the end of this year or is that
really not on the carts?

Speaker 3 (01:35):
I think hearing everything that Taylor has said this week
and all the commentary around it since, and hearing Mestrov
and Manley CEO speak and a few others with maybe
a little bit of authority to speak about what's going on,
it's almost a case of it's a complete mystery what
he's going to do, whether or not he plays on
on it's just one fact he's there that it's not

(01:57):
going to be at Manly, because it's quite obvious that
he's had he's had a disagreement or he feels disrespected,
but he doesn't feel disrespected enough to disrespect the club public.
But it's just it's flat out weird and mainly probably
could have handled the whole thing better. They said that
they went along with Daily's wishes and saying they didn't
want to talk about contracts last November December, that they

(02:18):
were reluctant to offer a two deal anyway, whatever. I
think the Rooster's bulldog of Dolphins, for the three that
have emerged, is the three most likely if Daily is
to go on, and I dare say that the Roosters
would be favored among those treers.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
How old Daily Cherry Evans? Is he what you be?
Thirty six? Wouldn't he?

Speaker 3 (02:36):
Yeah? Thirty six? But he's stealing great Nick. He's the
ultimate professional. He's in such great nick. He hasn't had
a major injury like he doesn't have Oh jeez, you've
got to be worried about his knees or I mean,
the only thing that popped up really in recent times
is that backspasm he had against the Warriors a couple
of weeks ago. And I'm like, I've had backspasms and

(02:58):
I know that they're masking something more sinisters. But hopefully
it was just a one off with Daily and there's
no disc problems for issue with his lowest spine, which
can happen at the days, especially with the impacts that
he suffered. But no, he's in for a thirty six
year old. He's as good as nick as possible because
that's played the amount of regular league games as he has.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
All Right, we'll track this story with interest. As you say,
he'll probably help the Seagulls tear it up against the
Eels tomorrow. The round started with another loss to the
Penrith Panthers. That is three in a row for the
three time reigning NURL premierears. Are they human after all?
The Panthers?

Speaker 3 (03:36):
Yeah, Yeah, that's the assumption that everyone's made now I
have and Cleary, he's such a good coach and he's
starts a good man manager. He went in and said,
judges properly on that with the fact that we've then
shipped away chipped all over our best players or two
or three of them leading up beat success, Judges on
that when we actually play the way we know we

(03:58):
can play, i e. Control possession and control teams without
the ball with their kick chase and their defensive pressure.
And it's just a loose at the moment. Now, I mean,
what is it? Chicken egg? Is it? Is it? Loose
because they have lost all these players and title cogs
and their energy and all of those things. Or is
it by virtue of the fact that, yeah, they're taking

(04:21):
a few more games than usual for the Wills to
start turning for them because of all the efforts that's
gone in in the last four years for the players
that are still there to try and do it all
over again. Look, even if they missed the finals at
Won't Sully, what Ivan Clear is as a coach, what
Nathan Clear is is a player, and what that club
is is a development club. It's just phenomenal what they've
been able to do that. Eventually, surely it has to

(04:43):
it has to tell. And maybe we're just seeing the
initial science here that the penrith are off the boil
and it's open for anyone else to take advantage this year.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Yeah, well, anyone who wants to chase the storm betters
everybody pretty much.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
Yeah, we were discussing with mates last night. It's storm
and who We asked the questions like four or five
different answers. So yeah, it's a fascinating company in that regard.
And if the storm go off a little bit, it
is completely.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
Wide open, all right, well, let's finish with football and
the soccer US two good results in the latest World
Cup qualifying window of five to one went over Indonesia
at home and then a good two nil one away
against China. So in terms of automatic qualification out of Asia,
you have to finish in the top two in your group.
Japan have already secured top spot. Australia have to play

(05:31):
Japan and then Saudi Arabia. That Saudi Arabia game away
that feels like a virtual one off automatic qualification game,
doesn't it, Saudi Arabia Australia in June.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
Yeah, it does. It does. However, if we beat Japan,
take care of business again them and weirdly enough, Japan
look make qualifying look easy, and they got all these
fabulous splayers playing in Europe. But every time we play
them it becomes a lot closer than what the squad,
the squad depth would suggest or form before. It would

(06:04):
suggest that it's just a weird thing. Hopefully they ain't
come out in Tonka thorn Ill. But yeah, if we
get that result right then it's very much on our
own hands. In Saudi Arabia need a miracle. So yeah,
we put ourselves in a position to look after things
our own way. Given those two great results and the
first halt against China was probably one of the better

(06:25):
halves of football the entire qualification campaign in front of
eighty thousand screaming Chinese fans just to quieten them with
a damn good performances. They helped by the goalkeeper on
the second goal, we had a shocker. But yeah, really
impressive results. But Pavovic hopefully gets a bit more time
to just play before these next two games, not like

(06:46):
two days, maybe four days, and yeah, better performance like
the performance against in these late but we're still untight
one weirdly. But yeah, the important thing is it's in
our own hands and for once we don't need things
to go our way in regard.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
I think I read that tiny Popovich has had the
best start in terms of unbeat and matches as soccer
as coach since Terry Venables in nineteen ninety seven. So yeah,
pretty good stuff that ended up.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
That's true. I try.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
I didn't mean to bring up old Roans, that's true.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
You know, I'll guarantee you Piney if you bring up that
with any soccer who standing and knows their history that's
exactly the answer you're going to get.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
So yeah, did you catch the fact that the All Whites,
though with a slightly easier path you know, have have
qualified for the World Cup next year?

Speaker 3 (07:38):
No, happy for them. They got it done against the
places you want to visit on holiday, so really happy
for them. It's care of business with all due respect
in New Caledonia football who they've obviously proven New Caledonians
and also for you and all that. But yeah, the Kiwis,
I'm sure you all started celebrating when you found out
what the qualification criteria was and you took advantage of it.

(08:00):
Well done and obviously that with all the plays you
plan in Europe, it's gone in the right direction. Oity,
So good stuff testing.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
Hey, always good to chant Adham. Enjoy your day and
we will catch up again same time next Saturday.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
Sound good, have a good one.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
