There’s been a mixed response to the announcement that Papua New Guinea will house the newest NRL team.

The team will be based out of the capital, Port Moresby, and will join the competition from 2028.

It will be the first non-Australia based club since the Auckland Warriors were established in 1995.

Australia Correspondent Adam Peacock joined Piney to discuss the fallout of the announcement.

“You can tell that there’s an, like, above and beyond tone to it all to attract players in the sense that they’ll go up there and not have to pay tax, so that says a lot.”

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from newstalk EDB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
A big part of our Saturdays is our regular catch
up with Australian correspondent Adam Peacock, who joins us now, Adam,
let's start with rugby league confirmation this week that popa
New Guinea will join the NRL from twenty twenty eight.
This has been widely telegraphed, of course it's now been confirmed.
How has this been received and what do you make
of it? PNG joining the NRL?

Speaker 3 (00:35):
Yeah, good a piney. It's split very much split an
opinion because it's a political football as much as a
rugby league football that we're talking about, and it's because
the Australian government has said, will give you six hundred
million dollars over ten years if you go and do
this thing. How would this all be happening without that?
I doubt it very much. Does that mean PNG doesn't

(00:58):
like it's rugby league? No, far from it, complete opposite.
They sort of the obsess over the sport up there,
but somehow we've ended up in this situation where we're
actually putting a team there and yeah, look you can
tell that there's a a like a above and beyond
tone to it, all to attract players in the sense

(01:21):
that I'll go up there and not have to pay tax,
So that says a lot. I just have an uneasy
feeling about it that. Okay, I say a politician comes
in in four years and goes, well, what's all this about?
This is ridiculous, and then after the ten it's done
or halfway through they pull the funded as politicians can
change their minds. So yeah, it's a precarious one. I'm

(01:46):
not totally comfortable with it, but some people are.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
Yeah, and it's part of an expansion of the NRL,
which I think I read they want to get to
twenty teams either by the year twenty thirty or the
year twenty thirty two. Over here in New Zealand, we're
obviously very keen to have a second franchise. So are
the other candidates around the place for further expansion A
team in Perth for example, then an Adelaide. I don't know.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
Yeah, they're looking at Perth, they're definitely looking in Southeast
Queensland again, and they're looking in New Zealand. Now I
know regularly people look down upon football as a as
a second third class citizen in this part of the world.
But they shouldn't because they should be looking at what's
going on at Auckland with the A League and think,

(02:31):
oh wow, this could actually work on the South Island
as a munch on the North Island in reverse of
what happened. I mean, you were there last week the
case at points. So yeah, I hope that they deeply
consider a second New Zealand franchise and if that's going
to maybe include a Pacific element to it all as well,

(02:51):
that I don't think is a bad thing, because you
want to you want to grow the game in the Pacific,
because it seems like some tongue are showing things in
international football. So yeah, hopefully it's an open book when
it comes to the next two decisions.

Speaker 4 (03:08):
Yeah, we hope so too. All right, let's get to
Test cricket.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
The Australia India series has landed in Brisbane for the
third Test. Indie are comfortable winners in Perth, Australia comfortable
winners and Adelaide.

Speaker 4 (03:20):
What do you predict for the next five days at
the Gabba?

Speaker 3 (03:24):
That it probably won't go five days because the bowl
the bowling is too good unless it rains, Like there's
a bit of weather around Brisbane this time of the year.
In terms of four o'clock you're looking up at sky.
I do I know if he comes Today's still so yeah,
the weather might play a part, but I can't see. Yeah,

(03:46):
with the likes of former Cummings Hazelwood Stark in the mix,
you're hard pressed to find better fast bowling in the
last twenty thirty years. So how this goes on for
five days, I doubt how it ends up, I don't know,
because both teams have once they've got momentum in a game,

(04:08):
they've put the foot down and totally outplayed the other one.
So there's no reason to say that it can't happen
in this test with India and they do what they
did in Perth. Conversely, exactly the same for Australia. Did
nuble up on Adelaide.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Yeah, it's a fascinating series. They seem pretty evenly matched
these two, and I guess the series score would suggest that. Yeah,
it's as it. I mean, cricket's obviously the biggest game
in town and summer over there are people really and
to this a lot of eyeballs on it.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
Yeah, yeah, it's big. It's big, and they don't. Actually,
I've got to give Cricket Australia who are rappy. They've
done really well with their programming this year in the
sense that they've put some big women's matches on. They've
had just had a series against India. I think our
women's team is setting over to play you guys in
three one days. Around that, you've got big batch starting
this weekend, and around that you've got the Test series

(05:00):
which feels like a focal point at the moment, and
then there's a women's ashes at the end. So it's
really well mapped out and it is huge. It is
absolutely huge, and you're right, it's too even seems like
it's uncanny. We've got two really attacking number five bats
in the head and part we've got two legends of
the game at number four who were scratching around to

(05:21):
find their best Verit Colby founder in Perth conceived Smith
signed here your question marks at the top of the
order with young players coming in Joyce Well McSweeney so
and then the bowling units as well. Yes, it's a
great matchup.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
And finally to the Premier League, where Ange postera conglu
one of your finest, if not the finest football manager
of all time is at the moment, I guess in
an interesting position with Tottenham there eleventh in the Premier League,
twenty points from their fifteen games, fifteen points behind the leaders.

Speaker 4 (05:53):
Liverpool are one all drawer in the Europa League.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
In the last couple of days at Rangers, I see
Ange came out and fired a shot at his German
striker Timo Werner.

Speaker 4 (06:03):
Is an under a bit of pressure, Yeah, yeah, a bit.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
I don't think it's job defining just yet. I don't
think one result is going to twist it either way.
But it's five without them win up pumping Manchester City.
But before that it was up and down stuff from
Tottenham and that's the frustration that they show their brilliant
best and then don't back it up. Now. I don't
care where you are in life, if you're inconsistent about it,

(06:31):
you're going to frustrate people. And that's what's happening with
Dottenham fans at the moment. Everyone else is not a
Dottenham fan sense to be able to laugh at them
very easily, which is there Those things happen but and
how he finds the best from his societ, I'm not sure.
I watched that rangeous game yesterday and they were far
from their best. They just look a bit can't keep

(06:52):
a bit unsure of themselves. And people picked up on
it last year that if Ann's loses one or two
of his best center backs, oddly enough, that's a bit
of a big factor for because that they are asked
to make huge decisions quickly, because that's a catalierratitude when

(07:13):
they copper a transition. Those two center backs have to
come in and make a big play all the time
and if that timing's off, then they're going to look stupid.
And that's what's happened a few times to Tottenham, and
I can't say changing for those two center backsvan Aben
and Ramira haven't been readily available all the time. So
Southampton this week weekend I've got a League Cup quarter
final against matches to United and then Liverpool next weekend.

(07:36):
I think by Christmas will know exactly where An stands
for now.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
Anyway, Yeah, absolutely, Well it's it's it's under the harsh
glare over there. As we as we all know, Adam
great to get the chance to check to you as
always about Australian sport and enjoy your weekend. We'll catch
up again one more time before Christmas next Saturday.

Speaker 3 (07:54):
Sounds good, Thanks Bony, No, thanks adm.
