Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from News Talks EDB.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Chiefs winger at Tenny Nanai Saturo has played every single
game of this season for the Chiefs.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
Running it back is I said, Turro over halfway and
then a little ship over the top chasing will He
gets the mouse, He gets the mouse, the taper from
Leo Willis Muss and non nice.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Saturo goes in in the left head corner.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
He's been a standout for the Chiefs this season and
joins us now at any nan I Satura, thanks for
taking the time at Aenny. Not only will you play
your sixteenth game this afternoon in a row, it's your
sixteenth straight start. No other player has done that in
Super Rugby this season started sixteen straight game. So first
of all, mate, how's the body holding up?

Speaker 3 (00:52):
Oh? Yeah, so it is hanging on a no, yeah,
but it's been lost. I guess it's just awesome to
get a couple of games under my belt. You know,
obviously know the last past five years I've been here,
I've been in and out because of injuries. But there's
probably my first season or for sixty years playing sixteen

(01:14):
games like you said, and yeah, that's good. Bodies, body's
all good. It's just hanging on. But yeah, I'm good
to go for this weekend.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
And I guess also as well as staying injury free,
you've got to be playing well to continue to be
selected week after week.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Are you?

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Are you happy with the way things are going by
to yourself and and and the chief season on the whole.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
Yeah, yeah, now obviously you said it, but yeah, pretty
pretty happy with my performance. I think I've been going
be going all good. But obviously it's the finals finals
footy now, and I guess those players who play in

(01:55):
the it's one of the big the big stace that
they beget to share themselves what kind of a player
they are in the finals, the finals forty.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
Indeed, you play mainly on the wing, obviously, but you've
had a few games at fallback as well. Do you
enjoy wearing the fifteen jersey?

Speaker 3 (02:15):
Yeah, it's awesome. I don't my swing or fallback, but yeah,
I've been getting a couple of games there this year.
And yeah, obviously fullback I guess my preferred position, but opposition,
but they should have been awesome place the last couple
of years so yeah, he's he plays a big role

(02:36):
in our team.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
And yeah, something that's become a parent in your game recently,
well not recently, but over the last couple of years,
as is your kicking.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Is that something you've worked on, perhaps with someone like
David Hill in the Chiefs environment.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
Uh, yeah, yeah, David Hill and also like players like
Sean Steenson. Obviously he's got a big, big pannon on him.
And yeah, it's still still working on my left foot,
but yeah, I guess this year they've know the coaches,

(03:12):
the team, They've put a lot of ownership on myself
to use my boot more, especially on the left side,
to really pressure with Demos's boot. And also sure that
just kind of changes up I'll kick in, gives us
more kicking on austion. So yeah, it's going pretty good,
and yeah I'm still developing my boot.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Last weekend went over the Raids in the quarterfinal, pretty impressive,
particularly in the first half. Did it kind of feel
like everything really finally clicked for you guys in the
first half last weekend?

Speaker 3 (03:46):
Yeah, yeah, I feel like they're obviously our forwards, they're
on that game. I think they've hit the platform for us.
Great platform platform for us to prospects to strike it out. Word. Yeah,
everything was going well. We're playing in the right end
of the field. Also with a shortman shooter in the

(04:08):
first is using his boot. Really is a lot of
pressure fast in our house. We've got to continue there.
This week is going against going against the Kings. We
know what they bring in that they have.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Just on them. If you you know, you talked to
a lot of people talk about the Chiefs back three
and how impressive you have been. You look at the
Hurricanes back three for this one rare moreby love, how
much work do you put into diffusing what they might
bring this afternoon.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Yes, they've got a good back three. I've played or
Sas he's good a ball in hand, Ruben as well,
Ruben loves at the back. He's got a good boot,
good skills and also fast as well. And also moreby
know he's he's cooked as well. But we know what
they're going to bring. We know that they're god of

(05:04):
ball in hand. But I think it for us is
just limiting the austion. Then I guess focusing more on
how we're how we're going to play on this second.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
And Damien McKenzie and the ten jersey for you has
been directing you around the park all season. How have
you assessed the way he's gone in the in the
first five position for your for you guys this.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
Season, he's he's he's awesome. He stood for us and
his knowledge, his brain. Yeah, especially when I was playing
full back. A couple of games I was playing full back. Yeah,
he took a lot of pressure off me. And he's yeah,
he's got he's sort of like the voice fail team

(05:44):
and Evertin goes through him and yeah, he's been a
thing for me this year.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Of course, you were part of the New Zealand seven's
set up when Clark Laidlaw was was the national sevens coach.
He's now Hurricanes coach. Of course you want a Commonwealth
Games goal medal, Olympic silver medal with Clark Laidlaw. I think,
uh has it as a surprise you had quickly he's
adjusted to coaching fifteens.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
No, not really, no cluck. He's a good coach. He's
also good of other stuff as well, just bringing him.
He's good around the off field as well. The culture
in there and I'm not surprised that they're going well
I know what it's like to be under Clark l
Law and yeah, yeah, not surprised.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
He seems to be a really good man manager and
obviously it's there's a lot more people to manage when
you're a fifteen's coach. But did you find that in
the sevens environment under him that he was that he
was good one to one?

Speaker 3 (06:39):
Yeah, yeah, he was really good around there, especially me
coming out of school. He was good for my confidence,
what was backing me And yeah, obviously as a young
player that that's what you want when you're as a coach,
you want coach to back and yeah he was, he was,
I was when I was under the club, all right.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
And just to finish beaten in the semi final two
years ago, beaten in the final last year. Do you
feel like the Chiefs can take that last step and
win the whole thing this year?

Speaker 3 (07:11):
I know that we can. We got the team for it.
It's just us turning up on the day. But we've
been there before and we spoke about it this week
and but I guess the precious not on us soon last.
We have to go out there in our front up
and I guess play our game.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Well, it's going to be a big crowd there at
Anny this afternoon, over thirty thousand turning up. I get
the feeling most of them will probably be cheering for
the Hurricanes, but I'm sure you won't mind that in
the in the Chiefs either of mate. Hey, all the best,
all the best in the semi final. Like I say,
everybody's really looking forward to it. I appreciate you taking
the time for.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
A chat, no no worries, Thanks for having me, thank you, no.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
Thank you for joining us at any at any and
then I satura there and have a present for the
Chiefs this season.
