Us Talks.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
NB Roy says on text, poor Jason having to work
while the rugby league is on. But like a professional,
he loves his job. I'm sure, Roy, I do love
my job, the greatest job in the world, you might say,
And yes, I do have to work while the rugby
league is on. But mate, if I've learned anything over
these over these last few years of mine, it's that
(03:44):
I can sometimes do more than one thing at once,
not usually, but sometimes. So I'll keep eyes on it
for you, Roy, and for all of the others. And
you can stick with us across the afternoon for all
of the other sport that we have for you. But
Warriors Raiders Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas, building up towards a
kickoff at one o'clock. Let's lead things off with Warriors
(04:06):
CEO Cam George live from Las Vegas. Cam, thanks for
taking the time. How have the last few days in
Vegas been?
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Yeah, it's been good, mate.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
It's the excitement's been building up, you know, as the
game day has got closer and closer, and you know,
there's a lot a lot of people here from New
Zealand or supporting the Warriors. So at the end of
the day, it's been a great week. But we've got
a job to do. Today, which we're very much looking
forward to being at the stadium and get those two points.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
What sense do you get from the team and the
coaching staff ahead of what is a pretty special occasion,
but what is also, let's face it, a season opener
for the new twenty twenty five NRL season.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
Yeah, look, the boys are excited, coaches are excited, you know,
because of the difference in the season opener. You know,
why wouldn't you be with this opportunity. However, the thing
I've been most impressed about the whole week since we
arrived last Saturday is you know, the guys have really
you know, built up the week and grown their focus
(05:12):
into the job at hand, and they haven't let that,
you know, that focus get away from them.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
They've been really really good on.
Speaker 4 (05:20):
The park training, they've been very good away from training
at the hotel and just you know, looking after themselves
and getting ready for the week. So there's a real
sense of excitement, but it's not over the top, you know,
the boys have certainly got their their mind in the game,
so to speak.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
I remember when you joined me in studio last year, Cam,
this this hadn't been confirmed. You you didn't know whether
you were going to Las Vegas or not. Can you
just remind us how you found out and whether you
had to pitch for it, how it all played out.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
Yeah, we pitched last year.
Speaker 4 (05:52):
I can't remember the dateline, but it's it's a long process,
and you know, you've got to they not just let
anyone come here for the sake of it.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
You've got to add value to the event and you've
got to be.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
Really keen to buy in and grow the support of
the game over here. And by that I mean there's
a lot of media and other activities you'd undertake to
try and help the NRL brow the sport.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
So you know, we've been busy all week.
Speaker 4 (06:18):
I've been flat out all week doing different things for
the media and also the NRL and the players have
as well.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
So you know where where we've where we found out.
Speaker 4 (06:28):
I can't exactly remember the date, but I was pretty
confident we'd get there at the end of the day
because of the certainly the fan you know, the fan
engagement we can bring to the event, which is clearly
on hand to see if you're floating around Las Vegas.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Yeah, well, I've seen plenty of footage coming back it
seems as though one New Zealand Warriors Riplica jerseys have
taken over the large parts of the Las Vegas Strip.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Are you?
Speaker 2 (06:49):
Are you mixing and mingling with a few Warriors fans
and the lead up to this afternoon.
Speaker 4 (06:55):
It's absolutely crazy to see the number of Warriors supporters here.
I have no doubt, no doubt in my mind that
we would be doubled to any other club here at
the moment, and you know, really proud of that.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
And it's really.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
Important that we you know, we've we've put in a
good performance today to acknowledge all these people that have
traveled far and wide to be here. But our supporters
honestly are everywhere. It's just unreal walking around the streets
and you know, saying hello, you get a lot of
up the wires. They're just so proud and I just,
you know, I just really want to win today for
(07:31):
these guys.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Tremendous. How other nerves do you get nervous?
Speaker 4 (07:36):
I get, yeah, I get a little bit nervous, particularly
for these types of events. You know, they don't come
along every day. So as I just touched on, I
just I just really want to make sure that the
club represents our fan base really well today and that's
very important to me. So yeah, I get a little
bit nervous for those said reasons.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
All right, we'll.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
Great to get the chance to chat to You're so
close to kick off, Cam, thanks indeed for taking out
call all the best this afternoon. We'll see you back home.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
Can't wait.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
Thanks mate, Now, thank you Cam, Cam George their CEO
of the Warriors. Let's get inside the the the playing
group and the coaching staff. Earlier in the week, I
spoke with Warriors assistant coach Slade Griffin to find out
first of all of this was his first time in Vegas.
Speaker 5 (08:17):
No, actually I was lucky enough to come here. I
come with my wife actually about six or seven years ago.
We only did three nights, so that was plenty enough.
And here we got in and out.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
Well quite different this time around, obviously with a game
of rugby league to play. How have you kept the
players focused with so much going on around them?
Speaker 5 (08:38):
Yeah, so when we got here, we we let the
boys go out, just let their hair down, kind of
feel the town. They had a really good night. They
connected and they all went to the same place and
the security guards and stuff with them, so it was
very well done and then we refocused. So the boys
have trained really hard. We had a couple of really
good sessions. Just had in a posed session against Wigan
(09:01):
which is really smooth. And yeah, they're ready to have
a really obviously they know we've come here for a
job to do, so I'll focus on that and then
after the game, if we have a really good win,
they'll be able to have a few more beers there.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Indeed, what have your training facilities been?
Speaker 5 (09:15):
Like? Really good? We trained at the UFC Gym, so
that was really cool. Got a few fighting fans and
the team so that was a really awesome experience for them.
And it's a great facility there. The fields, Yeah, the
field's not the greatest, but you know that was all good.
We got our work done, so you can't expect too much,
(09:38):
I guess in a foreign country.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
Indeed, And what about the match venue Allegiant Stadium, what
do you expect that to be?
Speaker 5 (09:44):
Like, Oh, it's an amazing venue. We've driven past it.
It looks brand new. I've seen it on TTV. But
it's going to be really cool to go inside the field.
To be a little bit narrower and a little bit shorter,
so we get to go out there tomorrow. We haven't
been able to train there. We'll go out there tomorrow
for walk around and just yea feel the stadium be
amongst it.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
How much will that change the way you go about
things that the slightly smaller dimensions of the playing surface.
Speaker 5 (10:12):
Yeah, it's hard to plan for.
Speaker 6 (10:13):
I think.
Speaker 5 (10:16):
It's a bit of a feel thing when you're out
on the field. But we had a trial against Cronella
on that type of field, and it's maybe a little
bit harder to attack against. Like there's not obviously as
much space, so that might be a little bit different.
But yeah, I guess it just makes He'll probably just
make it more tough in the middle of the field.
(10:36):
You know, there's not as much space, so there'll be
some more bigger collusions.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
I Reckon just want to ask you about a couple
of players slayed, James Fisher. Harris obviously at the Warriors
for the first time. Can you give us some insight
into his early influence on this team.
Speaker 5 (10:52):
Fish has been awesome. He's he's got his own aura.
You know, when he speaks, everyone listens. He doesn't say
a whole heap, but yeah, when he stands up in
front of the team, he just owns everyone's presence. So
as standards off the field, you know, he speaks with
his actions. He's always doing his extras. He's just a winner,
like whatever it takes to when he's willing to do.
(11:14):
He studies hard, which is very impressive for the type
of player he is. He's really aggressive, but he's very
diligent as well. So he's been awesome for the young
boys to see, you know, that professionalism and that work ethic,
and he's dragged a few of them with him as well.
So he's lifted the team standards just by how he
goes about his own business.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
Aaron Clark back at the club after five years at
the Titans, so he'll start in the thirteen jumper. What
do you expect to see from him, not just this
weekend but across the season.
Speaker 5 (11:46):
Yeah, he's he's really excited to be back. He's kind
of he was out of the game and now he's
back at the Warriors Colors, back at home. He's he's
he played really well in the trials. He brings a
lot of league speed, bit of ball playing and he
works really hard defensively, so he's a strong guy, and yeah,
we're just excited to get him out there.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
And your halves combo Chanelle Harris Deavita, Luke metcalf in
six and seven. How did you land on that pairing?
Speaker 3 (12:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (12:17):
They both just like it was a really tough competition
for the half spots and the boys competed really well.
Chanel's kind of been in the system for a year
with Luke's been here for two years now learning under Sean,
and they're probably just used to the systems and the
way we attack it and the way we defend. But
they've they've just had a really good preseason, to be fair.
(12:39):
Both of them ripped in really hard and it gives
us a really good left foot right foot combination for
our kicking game as well.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
And I know it's always hard right at the start
of a season, But how does it feel as you
look forward to round one, even maybe comparatively to previous seasons?
You know, do you what does it feel like ahead
of the first game of the season inside the Warriors camp?
Speaker 5 (13:02):
Oh, it's definitely, you know, it's a bigger, big event.
The atmosphere is amazing. They already you know, you can
a lot of fans have just started rolling in, so
it almost feels like a finals game. So there's there's
obviously a bit more around, a lot of sacrifice. The
boys they deleave their families to come over here, so
they want to make it worth it. So yeah, I
think it's got a bit more in it this game
(13:24):
than just a normal round game.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
Have you managed to get a bit of a gauge
on on the Raiders.
Speaker 5 (13:31):
We've watched the trials and stuff, and yeah, we know
they are always a really good They are a really
hard team, big forwards, strong ball carriers, Ricky Stewart. You know,
they compete really hard. They fly off the line and
try belt you. So yeah, we know kind of their
style and what we have to do against it. But
(13:52):
it's on the day it's easier said than done.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
Do you think your favorites for this game.
Speaker 5 (13:58):
I wouldn't even know, But you know, anything can happen
in a game of rugby league. It's the greatest equalizer
of all sports. I reckon who wants it on the day.
But we're always confident in the boys. I've had a
really good preseason. They've trained really hard, worked on things
we identified we need a fix from last year. So yeah,
I guess it's our first real test in an inn
(14:21):
our all game.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
And you're seeing a few Warriors jerseys replica jerseys along
the strip there and in and around where you're staying.
Speaker 5 (14:29):
Mate, They're everywhere like this. There is fans everywhere. All
the teams have done well. But I don't know if
I'm biased, but I just I've seen a lot of
Warriors jerseys are taking over, which is so cool. Everyone's
having a great time. Doesn't matter what team you're from.
You see Worries, Raiders fans out. They're all just having
a good time there in Vegas. Yeah, it's like a
lot of Aussies and kiwis over here. But the vibes
(14:49):
are awesome. You know, there's so much to do and
wherever you go you see some in our old jerseys.
So yeah, it's.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
Cool, absolutely well cool time for the fans. Down to
business though, for you and the team. All the best
against the Raiders on Sunday, Slate. Thanks for having a
chat to us.
Speaker 5 (15:04):
Thank you very much.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
That is us. Slag Griffin, assistant coach of the team,
who I caught up with a couple of days ago.
He wasn't available at this time the game's about to start,
so that's probably fair enough. They're gathering in big numbers
at Allegiant Stadium, but also in big numbers at the
Warriors owned Full Time Sports Bar and eatery in Kingsland,
Auckland for the Warriors Vegas tailgate party. General manager of
(15:27):
Full Time Sports Bar is Shane Don who joins us. Now,
thanks for taking the time, Shane. How many you got
on this afternoon?
Speaker 7 (15:34):
We will be talking around the three today which is awesome.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
Three hundred and fifty. So this tailgate party, this is
a ticket at event. Can you tell us about this?
Speaker 7 (15:45):
Yeah, there's just hurt inside the bar and just as normal.
That was booked out in December and then we've decided
to run the tailgate party house in the back of
the car park, which we've got one hundred and seventy
five out there as well, two hundred here and one
hundred and sooner pive out the back just glued to the.
Speaker 2 (16:01):
Absolutely So what this is probably a silly question. What
sort of vibe are you getting from the fans who
are gathered there?
Speaker 7 (16:10):
Well, I haven't seen anyone without Warriors jersey on some
sort from ninety ninety five right away the caravan, so
camera Shosi yet a couple of penriis, but thinking yeah,
and we're in ninety nine percent for Warriors here right now.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
Mate, you would be a brave man or woman to
wear a canber Raiders jersey into full time sports bar
this afternoon, wouldn't you one hundred percent?
Speaker 8 (16:36):
But it will be.
Speaker 9 (16:37):
It would make for a.
Speaker 7 (16:39):
Big roar of the crowd. I'm sure in some way
or warm.
Speaker 2 (16:43):
Everybody is welcome, I'm sure at full time. So what
are you thinking, Shane? Obviously you know we're very biased
here and here in New Zealand. But what I mean,
do you have any nerves? Do you think the Warriors
will get the job done on day one in Vegas?
Speaker 7 (16:59):
Well, it's not like any other round one is. It
feels like a semi final and I think they can
run out on the field like it is a semifinal.
So I think both teams are going to be out
at Ricky. Stuart's no dummy and we need no dummy either,
So I think it's a game on. It's going to
be pretty tight. And look, of course I'm back in
the Wars. I'm I'm going to go by.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
Ten love it just before you go, Shane, obviously this
is this is round one. You're probably the destination for
most away games, but you're also open for home games too.
Speaker 7 (17:29):
Yeah. Absolutely, yeah, jump on our website. The bookings already
were as we have booked out for this in December.
I've got a couple of home games coming up to
jump on and you think, get in here home with
the Warriors. The boys, we both are coming in afterwards
from time to time, pending commitments or whether they're here
or the seas. But yeah, this is this is the place.
Speaker 2 (17:50):
Enjoy your afternoon, Shane. Thanks for joining us, Hick the
predictions being.
Speaker 7 (17:53):
On mate, good, thanks for having me.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
Kid right, good one, you're saying Shane Don, the general
manager of Full Time Sports Bar. Yeah, that's a I mean,
it's the kind of place that you want to be
on a day like this and any day the Warriors
are playing. Full Time Sports Bar dot co dot nz
is the is the website addressed to check out what
they've got going on across the season. Twelve twenty five
lines are open on eight hundred eighty ten eighty. We
(18:17):
spoke a bit about the Warriors yesterday, but it feels
a lot more real today, we're only thirty five minutes
away from kickoff. Any last minute predictions, if you want
to unload any nervous energy that you have ahead of
this one, if you'd like to perhaps give us a
more call headed logical analysis on why you think the
Warriors will make twenty twenty five their year eight hundred
(18:42):
eighty ten eighty years our number. We're going to go
to Vegas a couple of times between now and one o'clock.
We're inside the match venue with Michael Burgess from the
New Zealand Herald and very shortly going to chat to
a couple who went to Vegas to watch the Warriors
and did something very special while they were there. Well,
we'll tell you more when we've come back here on
(19:02):
news talks here, but actually let's go to the lines,
because Dan's cordon. You're confident about this after noon.
Speaker 10 (19:06):
Dan, No, I'm not actually to be perfectly honest, but
my problem with the Warriors is this, Okay, what will
happen this year, the same.
Speaker 7 (19:22):
As every other year, will be.
Speaker 10 (19:25):
That they'll start to lose, and about three quarters of
the way through the season they'll say, oh, let's ride
off this year and we'll be better next year.
Speaker 2 (19:41):
Come on, Dan, it's the first day of the season.
The pessimism can come later. Surely we can have some
optimism today, of all days. Who knows what might happen
in the months ahead. I'm more interested in what's going
to happen today, So let's stick with that. Oh eight,
one hundred and eighty twelve twenty six, We're back after
this crunch.
Speaker 1 (20:01):
Hold Engage Weekend Sport with Jason pim and Homes New
Zealand so Ice Trustedo Milder News Talks to BBI.
Speaker 2 (20:10):
Twelve twenty nine on Weekend Sport. Here on News Talks.
Here be taking a cause and correspondence heading towards the
first Warriors game of the season, which is now just
thirty one minutes away in Las Vegas. Of course. Now,
Las Vegas is known for many things, one of which
is weddings. In Vegas hosts one hundred thousand weddings every year,
(20:31):
making it the most popular wedding destination in the United States.
Many couples also renew their wedding vowels in Las Vegas.
And you can add another couple to that. Kiwis and
huge Warriors fans Ben and Anna Rosca renewed their vows
there in the last few days. Now they're both with
us on weekend Sport. I've seen the photos. Ana, you
(20:53):
look absolutely beautiful in your wedding dress and Ben resplendent
in your Warriors tuxedo holding a cutout of the face
of the Mad Butcher. This is brilliant And it was
this always the plan to renew your vows in Vegas
ahead of this game.
Speaker 11 (21:12):
Oh, absolutely, absolutely, And the timing was so good at
our twentieth wedding anniversary as well, so what better way
to start our Vegas trip. And then obviously got the
Warriors today, which were really amped up about so it's
going to be awesome.
Speaker 2 (21:24):
Well, congratulations on the renewal and on your wedding anniversary.
Now you weren't married in Vegas, but I think you
renewed your vows one other time there, Ben, did you.
Speaker 6 (21:33):
Yeah, we did.
Speaker 12 (21:34):
We did it fifteen years ago with Elvis, and it
was just crazy that this time around it was the
same Elvis that married us, remarried us fifteen years ago.
Speaker 5 (21:43):
He's an absolute character.
Speaker 13 (21:44):
It was amazing it.
Speaker 2 (21:47):
Was the same Elvis from because there must be many
many Elvis celebrants in Vegas. Did you specifically try to
find the same guy.
Speaker 12 (21:55):
No, it was it was a fluke. He had actually
moved chapel, was from one chapel to another, and it
was at a different chapels to be met to be.
Speaker 2 (22:05):
I mean you would have remembered him, Well, I don't know.
He probably marries and renews vows for many couples. Did
he remember you from fifteen years ago?
Speaker 5 (22:15):
He reckoned.
Speaker 12 (22:15):
By the end of the ceremony, he definitely clipped, So
I think so.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
Now I've seen the photos, as I say, being the blazer,
the Warriors blazer that you're wearing, is that specially made
for this occasion?
Speaker 12 (22:29):
Yeah, there was tailor made in Thailand. So there's an amazing,
amazing well fitted suit. And then we had the boys
cut it out and Warriors suits as well. So we're
all looking the part.
Speaker 2 (22:40):
Oh Anna, this is just what a cool family occasion.
So your boys, Anna, they were clearly keen to be
involved in this whole thing as well.
Speaker 12 (22:47):
Yeah, no, they were, they were keen.
Speaker 5 (22:48):
They were keen.
Speaker 11 (22:49):
And after we renewed our vowels, we actually all headed
to Fremont Street and we all did the zipline as
a family. But I lost my veil on the zipline.
Speaker 5 (22:58):
What you was absolutely crazy.
Speaker 11 (23:01):
In my wedding dress, but my veil flew off on
the red carpet and I lost it.
Speaker 12 (23:06):
It was over the top of the NRL opening party,
so Fremont Street was packed with ten thousand crazy fans
while we ziplined over the top and our wedding attire.
So yeah, it was amazing. Sam Burgess was on stage
and he stopped what he was saying to give us
a wave as we was ziplining past.
Speaker 2 (23:22):
That is so cool. The thing about it is is
that you know these things would be out of place
in other city's been in Vegas. It's probably just an
every day occurrence.
Speaker 5 (23:31):
Yes, Oh it was nuts.
Speaker 3 (23:33):
It was absolutely nuts.
Speaker 12 (23:34):
It was such a such a good day, and we
were treadl at celebrities walking around the NRL fan zone.
Every second person wanted a photo with us, so we
actually felt like celebrities.
Speaker 9 (23:43):
On the day.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
Outstanding. How long have you both been Warriors fans?
Speaker 12 (23:47):
Oh, since day one? Since day one. We actually lived
overseas for quite a while, but we lived in Auckland
for nine years, so we're members for those nine years.
But we're living in christ Huts now, so we get
along to every game that's in christ Huts. We've got
an Anzact test coming up, which would be good. But yeah,
we've been been fans from since day one.
Speaker 2 (24:04):
And Ano the Mad Butcher. Uh, you know, cut out, cardboard, cutout,
you're always keen for that to be part of this,
this whole thing as well.
Speaker 11 (24:13):
Oh, Benny was differently, you're keen on me. I think
it really made some of those photos.
Speaker 14 (24:18):
It was hilarious.
Speaker 12 (24:20):
I actually I actually flecked Sir Peter Leecher a photo
of there afterwards as well. I've got his number on
my phone and I flecked him a photo of himself
at our wedding.
Speaker 5 (24:28):
So he was pretty staked.
Speaker 3 (24:29):
I bet he was.
Speaker 2 (24:30):
I bet he was. So there's a game now to
go to. You've you've sort of you know, you've cleared
your cleared your diary, now you've done all of this
other stuff and now there's a game to go to.
How much you're looking forward to getting to what looks
to be an outstanding venue, Allegiance Stadium in an hour
or so.
Speaker 12 (24:47):
Oh we're absolutely fizzing, like we've been walking around the
strip this morning and there's just worriyous supporters everywhere, you know,
ener L and Super League supporters all over the place,
so that the place is absolutely buzzing. The stadium looks
like it's going to be amazing, So we're so fired up.
Speaker 2 (25:03):
Outstanding guys. This is just such a cool story. Like
I say that, the photos look amazing. I'm sure there's
many more that will surface over the next little while.
Congratulations on the renewal of your vows. Thanks for chatting
to chatting to us, and hope you and you and
the boys have an absolutely awesome time this afternoon.
Speaker 6 (25:19):
No, thank you, Jason, appreciate it.
Speaker 12 (25:21):
Nice talking to you.
Speaker 2 (25:22):
Nice talking to you two as well. There's Ben and
Anna Roska Warriors super fans renewing their vows on the
occasion of their twentieth wedding anniversary in Las Vegas. It
could not have been any better. Twenty five to one. Well,
there's no way that the one New Zealand Warriors could
play in Vegas without one of their biggest fans, One
(25:43):
New Zealand CEO Jason Paris, who joins us now from Vegas.
Are you over there on business or is this strictly
a trip, a holiday of vacation, as the US residents
would say.
Speaker 15 (25:59):
Mate, it's definitely not work or business. I'm here with
nine other mates, remember Cargo, to celebrate our fiftieth birthdays.
So yeah, we're excited about the day here.
Speaker 2 (26:10):
That's for sure, absolutely brilliant. So definitely definitely a boys trip.
So how many how many of you were there?
Speaker 15 (26:17):
Yeah, there's nine of us, so all schoolmates from Macargo.
Who are you know will turn that at Big fifty
at the the same time or so. Yeah, it's been
the five days of just I don't know, absolute fantastic environments, sites,
you know, sounds people.
Speaker 3 (26:38):
It's been incredible.
Speaker 2 (26:39):
Have you been to Vegas before.
Speaker 15 (26:42):
Many many years ago? And and so I have to
say when we got off the plane, I was like,
we just need to get back on the plane alive,
because what they say about anything goes in Vegas is true.
And so you know, these are in the cogol ads
have have certainly put Vegas through its paces and so far,
(27:03):
so far, we're still standing.
Speaker 2 (27:04):
That's good to know. Good to know. With match arriving
in the game not too far away, have you had
the chance Jason to catch up with anybody from the team.
Speaker 15 (27:14):
Yes, I had the privilege to go to the Captain's
run yesterday. Boys are looking sharp. They just want to
get out and play the game now. I think. You know,
they've been here for over a week and quite a
tough environment to be in for a player, because you've
got all these you know, amazing, amazing things happening around you,
which can be a distraction, but you've got to keep
your head down and focus on the task task ahead.
(27:37):
But look, the combinations looked great. Everyone looked really fits.
Speaker 14 (27:42):
You know.
Speaker 15 (27:42):
The common consensus from all everyone I talked to is
we just want to get out there and get this
this this game underway. And you know, the stadium looks
absolutely brilliant. I suppose then the boys don't seem to
be too intimidated or daunted by the experience, so feeling
confident and excited.
Speaker 2 (28:01):
Are you seeing a few one New Zealand Warriors replica
jerseys around.
Speaker 15 (28:07):
We are dominating the town, I have to tell you,
Like they're are updoars chants every twenty five meters. I
would say there's two or three to one ratio of
Warriors supporters compete to any other team. Probably actually the
traveling English fans are kind of the second largest group
(28:29):
contingent of like Wigan and Warrington supporters. But yeah, like
there are Warriors supporters everywhere, and even people who have
come back who support other teams like they enjoyed it
so much last year. I bumped into a few Bronco
supporters are here charing for the Warriors as well, so
where everyone else's second favorite team at the same time.
(28:49):
So the stadium is going to be dominated by one
yw Zealand Warrior supporters this afternoon. It's going to be
just fantastic.
Speaker 2 (28:56):
Love it, Jose Well, we know that you and the
rest of them, the Cargile's finest will be representing representing
us over there. Will look out for you on the Telly.
Thanks so much for taking the time for a chat.
I hope the rest of you your stay in Vegas
is a safe and enjoyable one and we'll see you
back home.
Speaker 6 (29:12):
Thanks very much.
Speaker 2 (29:13):
Up the Wars, Up the Wars and DJAS. Thanks indeed,
Jason Paris their CEO of One New Zealand, main sponsor
of course of the One New Zealand Warriors twenty one
to one. We'll get you back to Vegas, but inside
the match venue before one o'clock Michael Burgess from the
New Zealand Herald is there. You can read his build
up and his match report on NZID Herald dot co
dot NZI will set the scene for you with just
(29:36):
over twenty minutes to go until kickoff between the Warriors
and the Raiders when we come back. This is Weekend
Sport on News Talks EDB.
Speaker 1 (29:43):
You be the TMO. Have your say on eight hundred
and eighty ten eighty Weekend Sport with Jason Pine and GJ. Gubnerholmes,
New Zealand's most trusted home builder.
Speaker 2 (29:53):
News Talks MB eighteen to one on News Talks HEB
and Weekend Sport will get you inside Allegiant Stadium in
Las Vegas very shortly with Michael Burgess out of the
New Zealand Herald. But Mike Lane is general manager of
the Alternative Commentary Collective. Mike, I sent you an email
this week. I got an out of office reply. It
said that you're traveling for work. That's a bit of
(30:15):
a street, isn't it.
Speaker 13 (30:17):
Hey, Hey, hey, hey hey hey it's worked Tony, Tony, Yeah, yeah,
you have to go to Vegas. You have to have
with the Warriors.
Speaker 6 (30:23):
It's it's work related. Okay, that's work related.
Speaker 2 (30:27):
It's a tenuous leak, but I think we can get
away with it. How has it been, Oh man.
Speaker 16 (30:33):
I'll tell you what.
Speaker 13 (30:34):
Like we knew, I thought that i'd go to Vegas.
I've never been to Vegas before, by the way, which
might shock you, but I've never been. And I thought that,
like the NRL and the Warriors, eve would just be
a drop in the ocean of what happens in Vegas.
Speaker 6 (30:49):
But I'll tell you what.
Speaker 13 (30:51):
I have not walked ten meters without seeing a Warriors jersey,
single bucket hat hat's that's pretty cool.
Speaker 6 (30:59):
It's pretty cool.
Speaker 13 (31:00):
There are Warriors fans everywhere, the odd Penrith fan and
hardly any care Mbra fans, so that's going to be
pretty effect when we at the stadium.
Speaker 2 (31:10):
I've seen some bit of croakiness in your voice. What
have you been up to the last few days personally?
Speaker 13 (31:15):
Well, look for legal reasons, pony, I'm going to say
I haven't been up to much. Just been out a
couple of shows, you know, might might have slept a.
Speaker 6 (31:23):
Couple of pokeies.
Speaker 13 (31:26):
I went to an NHL game, but apart from that, pony,
everything above and all above board.
Speaker 6 (31:33):
Now all above board.
Speaker 2 (31:34):
The ice hockey games play the ice hockey game. So
is that the the is that Bill Foley's team? Did
you go and watch this team?
Speaker 13 (31:39):
Yes, yes, the Golden Knights. We watched the Golden Knights
place Chicago. Oh, man, Americans, I'll tell you what they
know how to do sport like, Oh my god, that was.
It was basically twenty minutes of hockey and then there's
twenty minutes where they go off, where you go and
drink beers, and then they come back on. They do
twenty minutes more of hockey. Then you drink more beers
to twenty minutes while they're off, and then there's twenty
(32:01):
minutes of hockey.
Speaker 6 (32:02):
It's it's great. I do you know what, Piney, I'm out.
I'm moving. I'm moving to the States. I'm not coming home.
Speaker 2 (32:10):
Tell my wife, ring my wife.
Speaker 6 (32:12):
Piney, you're a good man. I know you're a good man.
I've known you for a while. I hope you can
trust you.
Speaker 13 (32:17):
Can you call my family, Call my wife, tell her
everything will be okay.
Speaker 6 (32:22):
I'll be home in the bat but not for a while.
Speaker 2 (32:26):
I don't know whether I should be given that responsibility, Mike,
but leave it with me. Mike Lane, General manager of
the ACC the Alternative Commentary Collective, clearly sampling everything that
Vegas has to offer. It's called it to one. Fifteen
minutes away from kickoff, let's get you to the match venue.
Michael Burgess from the New Zealand Herald is at Allegiance Stadium.
(32:47):
Can you start off, maybe, Michael by painting a picture
for us? What is the venue like?
Speaker 17 (32:54):
It's incredible, Piney, I've been lucky to go to a
few stadiums in my career, but this, this one, it
must be the best. It's absolutely amazing, really really steep,
grandstance and no matter where you're sitting, you is incredible.
The press box luckout in suf from Vertigo. It's so high,
I don't know how many meters, but you just way
up in the clouds up here. It's covered, but there's
(33:17):
plenty of light coming in. Just beautiful, a lot of
fans in here.
Speaker 6 (33:21):
We've just had.
Speaker 17 (33:21):
The national champion University of Las Vegas cheerleaders performing, and
of course the Warriors aren't too far away, so it's
just a magnificent atmosphere.
Speaker 6 (33:31):
It really is.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
We heard from Slade Griffin earlier in the hour. He
talked about the dimensions the field being quite different or
slightly different from what they face in a normal NRL
game back here. Is that obvious that the field is narrower?
Speaker 14 (33:45):
It is.
Speaker 6 (33:45):
Actually it was during the Captain drunk yesterday.
Speaker 17 (33:48):
I went down on the field and had a look
and the sideline is really close to the grandstand and
the concrete part. You don't want to be a winger
today and getting getting pushed out over the sideline.
Speaker 6 (33:57):
It could hurt. I think the field is.
Speaker 17 (33:59):
About five meters narrower and about six meters shorter, so
that the blocks of ten meters are actually only nine
and the half meters. But I think the width will
obviously be the biggest difference.
Speaker 6 (34:11):
You would you would think.
Speaker 2 (34:13):
What scenes do you get from the Warriors players, coach
Andrew Webster and others associated with the playing group, From
the media opportunities you've had since your time there.
Speaker 17 (34:25):
They're in a good space. I mean, it's been a
long week. It has to be a long week. They
had to ride earlier, arrived on Saturday, but they're saying
all the right things.
Speaker 6 (34:33):
Las Vegas is the kind of place that does drain you.
You know, where you walk out the door, there's just
something to take your energy away.
Speaker 17 (34:39):
They've been conscious of that, but webs Tommy's happy with
the training they've done. They've been pretty focused since Monday.
We're fully focused, so you know, I think they're ready
to perform. But that's the big question. The game we've
just seen between Wigan and Warrington was quite obvious that
the Warrington team had a bit of stage right the
occasion got to them that they didn't settle down until
(35:00):
well into the second half. So that is one of
the big battles today because this is not your ordinary
round one. You know, this is this is unbelievable, isn't
it to be here in Las Vegas, in this stadium?
Speaker 6 (35:10):
And also just thinking about the fact that this.
Speaker 17 (35:12):
Game is going out, this game, the Warriors game is
going out on free to air on the Fox Sports
network in the United States, So that's I'm not saying
you was good at watching, but that's to one hundred
and twenty million households. So if you start thinking about
that as a player, you know, it could distract.
Speaker 2 (35:27):
You from a playing roster point of view. This isn't
on paper as strong a Warriors team as last season,
is it? But how do you as cease their ability
to perhaps do better than the team did last year?
You know, such high expectation last year wasn't delivered a bond?
What about this year?
Speaker 6 (35:47):
I mean the obvious concern this year is having no
Shawn Johnson. I mean, he couldn't have gone another year.
Speaker 17 (35:52):
But the lack of experience as the halves is the
big one really because their halves are so important over
year and they're.
Speaker 6 (35:59):
Really miss add in Orthough.
Speaker 17 (36:01):
Of course, Bisher Harris is a fantastic player, So that's
sort of two obvious ones plus two who the experiences gone.
I do think, however, they've got a bit of a
better balance this year across the team. I like Roger
on the wing. I think center actually never worked.
Speaker 6 (36:15):
I like Leotara at center, the young kid, he could
be really good. Some of the young forwards coming through
I think are ready now after a couple of pre seasons,
and barn Ed and Fisher Harris will be great leaders.
Speaker 17 (36:27):
So that there's things to like, but it just really
depends how they start. I think it's the same with
every Warriors season. The first six or seven games. They've
got to win a few and get some momentum, otherwise
it could be a long year.
Speaker 6 (36:40):
You know, if they win today, and they win one
of their first two games in Mount Smart, then they're
well placed.
Speaker 2 (36:45):
Do they feel like favorites today or is it difficult
to gauge that? With it being such a unique occasion.
Speaker 6 (36:52):
It's quite hard to gauge really.
Speaker 17 (36:53):
By yeah, I mean I think it's going to be
a tight game with the Raiders obviously good better last season.
Speaker 6 (36:59):
Oh here we go, we've got the national anthem. This
is great.
Speaker 2 (37:01):
Well, we can't have your talking during that. We make
sure we let you go and enjoy the rest of
the year.
Speaker 17 (37:06):
The occasion, But yeah, I think, I think, I think
the Warriors can certainly do it today. The Raiders are
a beatable team, but they are a good team. They've
got plenty of pace, They've got those big forwards, so
expecting a close one.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
Good Man, Burch, go and stand for the star spangled banner.
Michael Burgess our man in Las Vegas. Read him at
inzied Herald dot co dot nz. He's done brilliant work
in the lead up with all sorts of color and
different storylines about the fans who have traveled. He's also
of course been alongside the team, so you can read
match previews and all sorts of things, and then after
the game today you'll be able to read his analysis
(37:43):
and match reports etc. At zid Herald, dot co, dot
enz just on ten to one new Stalk zeb.
Speaker 1 (37:50):
Breaking down the Hail Mary's and the epic fails weekends
for it with Jason nine News Talk zenb just.
Speaker 2 (37:58):
On seven away from one. Thank you for all your
causing correspondence around this Warriors game. I get the feeling
that a few people might might have divine focus after
one o'clock. Look, keep the radio on. We'll keep an
eye on the Warriors game for you as well and
bring you updates in there in their season opener from
allegiand Stadium. Much more to come after one o'clock as well.
(38:20):
Just before we get to the news, they but a
live sport to update you want in the Ford Trophy
cricket Final. This is taking place at the University of
Otago Overland, Dunedin, but Otago aren't playing. It's Auckland against
Canterbury Aucklam on the toss earlier on today, fin Allen's
their captain today. He decided, yep, we'll have a bat
got out there unfortunately for finale and he was out
(38:41):
for a duck and Auckland are very quickly in trouble
at twenty for three, then forty five for four and
fifty seven for five, but they have steadied the ship
ever so slightly. Jimmy Neisham, who got one hundred in
the semi final the other day against the Stags, thirty
one not out. He's been joined by Simon Keene who
(39:03):
is unbeaten on twenty eight, so half through their innings,
twenty five overs is gone. Auckland are one hundred and
eight for five, which in itself is not a terrific score,
but when you're fifty seven for five one hundred and
eight for five, we're still half year innings to go.
Maybe not too bad and we all know Jimmy Neisham
can give it some when he wants to, so if
(39:25):
he can stay there for the majority of the back
end of the innings then Auckland will, I'm sure, put
up a stiff target for Canterbury to chase. Zach Folks
two for thirteen, two for thirteen for Zach folks. He's
the best of the Canterbury bowlers that of five overs,
so he knocked the top off the order. He didn't
get Allen, but he got Solier and McKenzie so Auckland
(39:47):
year twenty for three early on in their innings. The
New Zealand Golf Open is into its final rounds. Overnight
leader Guntatco is yet to tee off. He's twenty two
under the card through three rounds. So the New Zealand
Open record as well and truly under threat twenty eight
hunder twenty seven twenty eight under. I think it is.
(40:09):
Andrew Alderson will join us from Milbrook to give us
more information after one o'clock. But looking at the players
who have teed off and the big mover, Sam Jones
had a really good round yesterday of sixty one. He
is through one hole today and one Undersea's moved up
a shot to sixteen under. Daniel Hillyer has had a
(40:29):
good start to his final round. He's two under through
five holes. He's moved to fourteen under for the tournament. Look,
I'm not saying they're going to challenge Gundtuco at twenty
two under, but they're at least making some strides up
the leaderboard. I said to Andrew Ordison yesterday, how far
ahead do you have to be going into the final
round to be pretty safe? He reckoned four shots, which
(40:50):
is what Guntucko is ahead of the outright second place
golf of Western Australian Ryan Peak at eighteen under. And
then now there is a group of four players who
are tied for third at seventeen under the card it
just seems to be a course where low's scoring is
very possible, which I guess also means that if you
want to play it safe, as good Taco might with
(41:13):
a four shot lead, then you should be able to
negotiate the course, you know, an even par or even
you know, one or two under, and that will probably
be enough unless somebody absolutely lights it up, which again
is quite possible. So that's a long winded way of
saying that that it is still all on at the
New Zealand Gopher Golf Open. We'll get you there after one,
(41:34):
and also inside the Blues rugby camp with assistant coach
Paul Tittle.
Speaker 1 (41:39):
The only place to discuss the biggest fource issues on
and after fields. It's all on weekend Sport with Jason
Paine on your home of Sport.
Speaker 8 (41:50):
Talk.
Speaker 2 (41:51):
Hello, Down one O seven. This is Weekend Sport on
News Talk SAIB for Sunday, March the second. I'm Jason Pine,
Anny McDonald's show producer. We're here till three. Really enjoyed
last hour getting the flavor and the color and the
vibe and vague. All the talking's done now and the
game has finally gotten underway. The Warriors are underway in
(42:12):
twenty twenty five, up against the Raiders in Vegas five
and it has gone no score. We'll keep eyes on that
for you over the next couple of hours. If you've
got thoughts, maybe you're watching the game and listening to
us to get your thoughts. You can text them too. Actually,
I wouldn't expect that you would necessarily call us while
you're watching the game. It's not The Raiders have discored
(42:32):
a try. They're going to check it. I just had
half an eye on it. As I said before one,
I have learned a little bit to do two things
at once, but I'm not great at it. I just
glanced up at the screen as I was chatting and
Raiders player was reaching out with the ball towards the
try line. Got to say, it looked to me like
it was short, but they're gonna check it in the bunker.
(42:54):
It's been called no trice is Anny McDonald, my faithful producer.
It's been called no try to start with. I see gotcha.
I thought you might be watching.
Speaker 18 (43:02):
I might.
Speaker 2 (43:02):
I thought it might be delayed in here because there's
been no decision on the screen I'm watching. It was
called no try on the field. Bunker is checking it.
It just has to touch the line, right Andy, that's
the rule. It just has to touch the line. This
is me commentating in real time. The bunker is checking it.
So it looked as though the Raiders may have opened
(43:23):
the scoring. LL stay with it until we get the decision,
which is try. The Canberra Raiders on the board in
twenty twenty five against the Warriors, they scored the first
try and lead Fortel with a kick to come. Other
live sport going on at the moment the fort Trophy
cricket final. Of course, now I completely jinxed Jimmy Neisham
(43:47):
before one o'clock. I said, look well, Jimmy Nisham's there
if he can last for a decent chunk of the
next twenty five overs, Auckland might be okay. Well, four
balls later he was out unfortunately for thirty two. The
sixth Auckland aces wicket to fall one hundred and twenty
for six, one hundred and twenty for six. They are
(44:09):
Simon keen as I'm beaten on thirty seven. He's been
joined by Lachlan Stackpole and Auckland rarely with a job
on their hands here and now to set any sort
of decent target for Canterbury one hundred and twenty for six.
They do still have a lot of time left to bat.
That's six down. That's the issue. They're in the in
the twenty ninth over as we speak and the New
(44:30):
Zealand Golf Open. The leaders as you heard from Andrew
Ordison during our news at one just heeing off Goodtuco
is twenty two under, a four shot lead from the
Australian Ryan Peak at eighteen under and a group of
four players at seventeen under the card. The leading key
we right at the moment is Sam Jones. He's a
shot further back in a tie for seventh at sixteen
(44:52):
under the card. Daniel Hillier is fourteen under. Andrew Ordison
from Milbrook this hour also James mcconey in his regular slot,
but we're going to start the hour with a little
bit of Super rugby because the Blues are on the board.
In Super Rugby twenty twenty five.
Speaker 19 (45:10):
Taken on the ground ten meter Mark bear it up
from fullback. Here comes a j lamb giving away to
Mark Tahalia. The alarm bells are rigging for the canes
and then now Mark Dahlia.
Speaker 4 (45:19):
Oh, here he goes.
Speaker 6 (45:21):
The alarm bells are rigging.
Speaker 19 (45:22):
Mark Tahlia are sensational dry.
Speaker 6 (45:25):
They've gone from.
Speaker 19 (45:26):
Seventy meters downfield. Barrett started it. They came across the field.
The white paster Tahlia, he's set up and he went
in out around the parachute, dive in the corner. Fantastic
dry from the all backwinger. They've gotten themselves back in
front the Blues league. The referee said we've had enough.
The Blues will take the points here. They have beaten
(45:47):
the home side by thirty three points to twenty nine.
Speaker 2 (45:50):
Terrifix stuff from Ross Bond and the commentary box last night. Yes,
the Blues on the board in twenty twenty five after
two losses to open their season. They have come from
twenty nine to twenty one down in the second half
to beat the Hurricanes thirty three twenty nine at Sky
Stadium in Wellington. Were joined by Blues assistant coach Paul Tito. Paul,
(46:11):
thanks for taking our call. How important was it for
you to get on the board last night with a
win after going zero and two to start the season.
Speaker 9 (46:20):
Yeah, a big result that we needed that as a group.
You know, we've been struggling along and not hitting our straps.
Not that we hit our strips fully last down in Wellington,
but it's definitely a big improvement and when they will
look to bull from the next couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (46:38):
Which areas in particular, did you think you weren't quite
hitting the straps of early on and maybe even still
as you say, have some work to do on.
Speaker 9 (46:48):
No, I just had a clision based game May and
we've you know, we've got a lot of guys coming
back and its really a little bit undercooked to be fair.
But you know, we look like at times last night,
you know, we looked like the Blues of old where
we were nice and physical and up working hard for
each other. So you know, he's got to keep improving
(47:10):
in those a couple of key areas and and get
back to work on Monday.
Speaker 2 (47:14):
Yeah, Vern kinda spoke after the game last night about
doing some of the things better that you've been working
all really hard in training. What other things do you
think you had better last night, Paul, You talked about
the collision areas without other things that that you Vern
and the others were particularly happy with.
Speaker 9 (47:30):
Yeah, I thought the scrum was really good last night.
No of the challenge laid down to the group around that,
so it was good to see that operating. Well. You know,
I still a line out that that's shake you from
me for my liking, we need to be better in
that space. So, you know, just a couple of areas
that we need to iron out. So we're so we're
(47:51):
heading in the right direction.
Speaker 2 (47:52):
Late in the game, you're four points ahead, you're down
to fourteen men, you've got a second five on the
side of the scrum boat and Barrett's feeding the ball,
and any nervous moments really late on last night.
Speaker 9 (48:05):
It's not spot to be to be there and the
coach's box that yeah, hey, you know, it's just one
of those things. Sam went off and you know, I
mean like he's got a pretty swallen eye, and you know,
like he's he said, a good knock and they aren't
allowed to go as hi A. So yeah, that'll come
(48:28):
out in the wash, I'm sure, but you know it
is what it is, and you've got adapt and you
know we managed to hang on and enjoy the win.
Speaker 2 (48:38):
Can you just unpack that a little bit for us,
because so Sam not got to got a whack to
the head. As you say, he's got a swollen eye.
So under hi A rules he can be replaced and
this often let Christy go on as an intended replacement
for him. But then what the independent doctor then said
that that's not an h i A. Is that how
it played out?
Speaker 9 (48:59):
That's what it looked like to me, you know, that's
all the kuffle was on the sideline around. Is it
an h i A or we playing silly buggers to
get him back on? You know I can And at
the end of the day, the Mashday doctor made the
call and we couldn't replace us. We couldn't put some
(49:21):
back on for Sam because he thought it was an injury.
Speaker 2 (49:24):
So you weren't playing s You went playing silly Buggers.
Speaker 6 (49:28):
No, Mark that.
Speaker 9 (49:32):
Mark Dele what a t Yeah, I.
Speaker 2 (49:34):
Was gonna ask you, I mean, do you do you
even get surprised anymore when you see him do things
like that?
Speaker 14 (49:40):
Oh?
Speaker 9 (49:40):
That was that was right up there.
Speaker 8 (49:42):
I reckon.
Speaker 9 (49:44):
Great to see him back and square of finishing off
those opportunities. It was a great. Now we caught that
ball in the twenty two Brady brought her back and
got the ball white Caleb and a couple of nice
phases and nice couple of touches from a couple of
young guys, and you know the world class finish of
that Markers, well, we've all seen it before and it
(50:06):
was beautiful thing.
Speaker 2 (50:07):
Boden Barrett has moved into first five in the second
half scene crucial. Do you think we'll see him start
at first five at some stage soon?
Speaker 9 (50:19):
And we've got some quality ten stevieps not far away.
You know, they will get the opportunity, Harry and Stevie
and Body, they will get opportunity at ten.
Speaker 6 (50:31):
You know.
Speaker 9 (50:31):
I just worry about the small numbers and make sure
that we're making sure that we're doing things better each
week so we can grow this team and be a
force to be written with in the next few weeks.
Speaker 2 (50:42):
Well, the biggest of the small numbers Hoskins STUTU late
yellow card, which was upgraded on field to a red
I've had a couple of red cards and Super Rugby
so far this season they've both ended up with three
game bands. Do you expect to lose Hoskins for that
length of time?
Speaker 9 (50:58):
Yeah, it looks that's a pretty standard procedure they're going with.
It looks like it, yeah, you I mean, I haven't
had a real good look at it, but it didn't
you know. I mean, they're looking pretty similar, aren't they.
So he might have a couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (51:16):
Does the game seem a lot faster to you this year?
Speaker 9 (51:20):
Yeah, I think the roosts are doing a good job
in that space. I think that's just they're not allowing
the injured guy to be seen. You know, they're playing
on and it's created allder fatigue. I know the boys
that we're having to work hard and there's opportunity laden games.
I reckon there's a lot of points are being scored
laden games due to this.
Speaker 2 (51:41):
You've had a really tough start to the season, Paul.
With the Blues. In fact, you're the only New Zealand
team who's had three New Zealand Derbies to start and
you've got a short turn around now before you face
the Brumbies on Friday night back at Eden Park. How
much of a physical toll does three straight New Zealand
Derbies take on on, particularly the Blakes. You look after
the forwards, we.
Speaker 9 (52:05):
Don't make excuse today where where the competition is the
competition that draws the drawer and that's all, that's the
cards that we're dealt. So I'm at hand. We're going
to make sure that we recover well, we're smart at training,
We're doing enough at training. But you know, we're making
sure that the boys are fresh going into Friday night
(52:27):
and really motivated to represent the Blues and making sure
that we're performing on the weekends.
Speaker 2 (52:35):
Are they physically tougher games though? The Derbies?
Speaker 9 (52:39):
Oh, the Derbies are crazy. You know you look last night,
these I mean these injury wards everywhere from from us
to the Hurricanes has got a massive injury told at
the moment, and it's just the next guy has got
to be ready because it's physical and it's demanding, and
it's it's tough work.
Speaker 2 (52:59):
And I know you've been gone for a while now
that you represented the Hurricanes with great pride for you know,
for close to a decade start of the two thousands,
do you still like going back there?
Speaker 9 (53:10):
Yeah? I do him. You know, I've coached a lot
of those guys with the Lions when I was down there,
so you know, there's a mess of respect from from
both teams, and hey, we're undern illusion that that game
could have gone either way last night, so there's there's
a lot of respect there and but definitely loved getting
down there and taking home the points.
Speaker 2 (53:33):
Better nights sleep last night than the previous two games.
Speaker 9 (53:36):
Nice to wake up with a win. She's been a
tough couple of weeks, but it's footy.
Speaker 2 (53:41):
Sometimes, Paul, thanks for chatting to us.
Speaker 18 (53:43):
Mate.
Speaker 2 (53:43):
You're probably gonna go watch the Warriors, so thanks for
thanks for taking the time for a chat. You too, Paul,
Thank you mate. Cheers Paul Title. There are Blues assistant
coach in charge of the forwards your hoskins, Soituto. I
think that's a three week A three week stint on
the sidelines for him doesn't seem to be any mitigation.
He's gone into the tackle in an upright position, spotted
(54:05):
straight away on the field as a yellow card, and
then upgraded while the game was going on to a red.
So yeah, I kind of get the feeling that Hoskin
Setutu might have to set out the next three. That's
basically been the case we've had. As I said to Paul,
there two red cards so far this season, and both
of those have have resulted in three week bands. I'm
(54:28):
just trying to find the exact information here. I saw
the stat earlier, and yeah, it feels as though that's
the situation. Yeh, Hunter Pay Sami and Daniel Lennart Brown
were the two players red midfield a hunt to pay
Sami and Highlanders prop Daniel Lennet Brown. They both got
red cards and both got three week bands. So I
think that's the situation as far as the fate of
(54:51):
Hoskin Stutu is concerned. Without wanting to pre empt anything,
oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty ken to chatta
bit of rugby with you, anything that stood out in
a round three, particularly that game last night, I think
the Hurricanes will probably look at it as an opportunity
lost one. It got away. They were in front by
twenty nine points to twenty one with twelve minutes to go,
(55:13):
Hoskinstitutu before he got the yellow cart actually scored a
try that brought it back to twenty nine twenty eight
once Bote and Barrett converted it, and then the acrobatics
in the corner from Mark to Layer. You forget just
how good he is in situations like that. He's very much.
He's like Dellan why tennis Aleisniak, isn't he In situations
(55:34):
like that, Being able to beat a player on the
outside and then even with covered of fence coming across,
take to the air and get the ball down for
what was eventually the winning try in the game was
quite something. So yeah, Mark t Layer was a big
part of that last night. But yeah, the Blues, they
wouldn't have wanted to go oh and three, would they.
(55:54):
I'm not saying there are Crusaders of twenty twenty four
proposition by any stretch of the imagination. When you look
at the Crusaders, what seven straight titles and then last
year didn't even make the top eight and went on
that terrible run to start their season. The Blues, I
don't know, it doesn't feel the same to me, they
feel like a team who Yeah, they've had a tough
start to the season, but I think they're going to
(56:16):
be okay. They've got the Brumbies next on Friday night
to open Round four, then away at the chief so
it actually it's a really tough start for them and
the Crusaders. So the Blues have been handed such a
tough first six weeks to this comp and with the
game being so much faster, are you noticing that? It
just seems to me every game I watch of Super
(56:37):
Rugby is just so quick, and full credit to the
referees for letting it be that way. Angus Gardner and
Charged last night slightly different interpretations of a couple of
instances there last night, I think from Angus Gardner, but
he's still a world class referee. But the games are
just absolutely flowing, and the scorelines would tell you that
(57:01):
Highland has been in my to Pacifica thirty one to
twenty nine Friday night. Then the Warratar is getting ahead,
getting over the draw nine twenty four yesterday the Chiefs.
I haven't forgotten the Chiefs still favorites for mine forty
nine to thirty four over the Brumbies, although I see
Damien McKenzie went off with what looked like a leg injury.
Whether that's serious or not, I guess we'll find out
this week, but that would be a big blow he
was to have to sit out for a bit. But
(57:23):
again he very nearly scored one of the tries of
the season even in round three, scything through and just
getting chopped down near the line. Damien mackenzie to remind
us all again of his class. Hurricanes twenty nine Blues
thirty three, and then late last night the Reds getting
home against the previously unbeaten Force. The Reads themselves, who
(57:43):
had the buy in week one, have now gone back
to back with wins to be two from two. They
next head to christ Church next Sunday afternoon for a
game against the Crusaders, which already is shaping up as
an intriguing prospect. Just to finish on the Hurricanes Blues
game out Sideline Ie in Wellington on Goldsport and iHeartRadio,
Matthew Buck had a quick chat to Bowden Barrett after
(58:05):
the game, with the Blues sewing up the win over
his former team the Hurricanes.
Speaker 18 (58:10):
Just a question from Dominic Burn and Rosbond and in
the heart had enjoy halfback that last feed into the scrum.
Speaker 16 (58:16):
Last time I played, I was year ten at school
and remember snapping a droppy from the ruck in a
d Gold final for France. Douglas, I need to work
in my squad on my feet, I think. But ohjeez,
there was a gutsy effort.
Speaker 2 (58:32):
To fires one of the season.
Speaker 18 (58:33):
You've got to be relieved, Yeah, a lot of relief.
Speaker 2 (58:36):
We needed to show some.
Speaker 16 (58:39):
Patience, some trust and the belief will find it.
Speaker 2 (58:45):
We know how to do it, so that game will
mean a lot for us.
Speaker 18 (58:48):
You've got some quality players on this team, and the
quality really stood out, probably in that last we won't
say three minutes because that was a bit of a shambles,
but the last ten minutes prior to that you went behind,
but then you stepped in at ten, the great shift
from Caleb Plaker then to lead the score in the corner.
The good players really stood up at the end. That
that's something you haven't found in the first two games.
Speaker 16 (59:08):
We haven't really found much cohesion our way of playing
the game. We train it and we're getting there for sure,
But I tell them how to wrap it up it's
just a start. That game meant a lot to us.
We really didn't need a win head tone and we
were desperate.
Speaker 18 (59:25):
And finally, Buddy, were your nervous teams a lot when
you came to Skoy Stadium.
Speaker 16 (59:30):
There are all sorts of emotions who were desperate. I
think there were parts there where we were trying and
we really had to look at ourselves. Connections were tested.
But that game will mean a lot for us. We
had to dig deep and just trust each other.
Speaker 18 (59:47):
And I ask you one more question in the Australian
referee tonight, was it refereed any differently than the first
two games? Do you think three four yellow cards, a
red card in the end, a lot of penalties, a
lot of advantages.
Speaker 2 (59:56):
What did you make of that?
Speaker 18 (59:57):
I don't want to angers Garden's good refree, but did
you feel it was different tonight?
Speaker 16 (01:00:02):
We felt after forty minutes the referee was certainly favoring
the attacking team.
Speaker 2 (01:00:06):
Playing territory was important.
Speaker 16 (01:00:08):
The kickbatter was an interesting one today with these conditions
which I know well some of it can be a lottery,
but look he's a world class referee. It's about playing
to the ref in some games because of the way
they interpret it and we have to adapt.
Speaker 18 (01:00:24):
Thanks for your time on on tonight.
Speaker 5 (01:00:25):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (01:00:25):
That is Boden Barratt speaking to our Sideline eight in Wellington.
Matt barks some interesting interesting responses there, particularly around that
last one there that when you've got the ball you
might just get the rubb of the green from the referees,
or maybe that's just Angus Gardner's interpretation of it. Peter
on Tex says Knesby Blues lack of patience costing the
(01:00:46):
Canes this game. When they were on the Blues line
in the final minutes, Naholo dived over the ruck, which
is illegal. He got penalized a little more. He should
have known that they could easily have scored had they
been a bit more patient. The Blues down to fourteen,
less defense, the Cane's got another line out five meters out.
Instead of being patient again, they went wide. God isolated
had knocked on. These were the reasons the Blues won,
(01:01:09):
which had they lost, would have put them under big
pressure for the rest of the competition. Very frustrating from
McCain's fans point of view. Thank you, Peter, good wrap
from you. Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty if
you'd like to add your two cents worth to the
conversation around Super Rugby nine two nine to two one
text in Las Vegas. We're about midway through the first half.
(01:01:29):
Canberra lead the Warriors by six points to milk converted
trite has them in front by six nil as we've
had twenty two minutes in that game. To other live
sport happening around the place. The Ford Trophy Final in Dunedin.
One hundred and forty seven for six Auckland in the
thirty fourth over with Simon Keene holding things up. He's
(01:01:52):
none more for his seam bowling, although he is batting
seven so he can clearly hold one forty eight not
out of the same number of deliveries, joined by Lockey
Stackpole who's nineteen not out of twenty nine. So they're
just shoving green shoots of promise. But yeah, one hundred
and forty eight for six, what would they be targeting
from there to forty Maybe if they can hold wickets
might not be enough for a fairly strong sort of
(01:02:14):
a Canterbury batting lineup. Henry Nichols is there, Mitch Hay
comcconki and others who can all bat pretty well, but
we'll keep eyes on it for you. One hundred and
forty eight for six in the thirty fourth over. The
other big live sporting event happening in New Zealand today
is the New Zealand Gulf Open. It's into its fourth
(01:02:35):
and final round with some Kiwis looking to make their
way up the leaderboard. The leader guntak Co might be
out of reach, but Kiwi's in the field, the likes
of Sam Jones, Daniel Hillyer, Michael Henry and others doing
their best to carve into his lead. Andrew Ordison going
to join us from Milbrook when we come back here
on Weekend Sport.
Speaker 1 (01:02:55):
It's more than just a game. Weekends for it with
Jason Fine and GJ. Gunnobs, New Zealand's most trusted home builder,
News TALKSB.
Speaker 2 (01:03:04):
News TALKSB and Weekends twenty nine away from two to
the Golf. At a moment, I've completely jinxed to Auckland again.
A short time ago, I did it to Jimmy Neisham.
Now I've done it to Simon Keane, who was going
along very nicely and in fact has clocked up his
best score in Enlist a cricket. But no sooner had
I've been singing his praises than he got out for
forty eight, caught by Mitch Half the bowling of each
(01:03:26):
Sodi one hundred and forty eight for seven. Now Auckland
batting first against Canterbury, Lucky Stackpole's been joined by Addie Airshock.
Still sixteen overs to go, so plenty of time, but
running out of wickets one forty eight for seven. So
clearly I've put the hecks on the Warriors. Meantime, I've
conceded a second try camberra Ly by ten points to
nil with thirteen minutes to go in Las Vegas. So
(01:03:48):
with all of this new found ability to put the
hecks on people, maybe Andrew Ordison I should try the
same for Guntatco at the top of the New Zealand
at Golf Open leader board and say there's no chance
he's going to be caught and it'll be a fat
to complete that.
Speaker 16 (01:04:01):
He is.
Speaker 20 (01:04:02):
Look tiny. I thought you could be on the money.
He's passed through one hole. Latest report good tacco, but
there are chases if you like Bobby Bay of China.
He's now at nineteen just within three. Kazuki of Japan
also on nineteen under, bested in New Zealanders. So far, well,
(01:04:24):
it's a mixture. Daniel Hillier has been making great progress.
Speaker 7 (01:04:27):
I think he is.
Speaker 20 (01:04:27):
Three under through the day. He's at fifteen under overall,
and Sam Jones saying at fifteen under or has moved
to fifteen under. He's won under for the day. Just
out on the tea when Sam Jones is teeing off
and did an absolutely magnificent fade into the distance Piney
and someone nearby remarked that that's further than I go
(01:04:49):
on holidays.
Speaker 7 (01:04:53):
I thought that was that.
Speaker 20 (01:04:54):
Was great, you know, nice work anyway, our of the
tea there the Claret jugs. The X of course is
going to be this place that's available at Royal Port
yce Lay in the year at the Open Championship, so
that's there along with the the Brady Breeze Trophy. So
playing off of that first te no end of entertainment
absolutely brilliantly.
Speaker 2 (01:05:12):
When you're twenty two underpart it feels as though you've
got your game together. But what has gone tak Co
done particularly well in the first three rounds and at
the very start of the fourth.
Speaker 20 (01:05:23):
Well, I think it's been a bit of a mixture.
But he said his iron play in the second round.
I threw a translator on my dad, but he said
as iron play was a real strength or short iron
play in particular, and then yesterday it was more the
partter that was just on song, so he was able
to just drop a few in that fashion. So I mean,
I guess it's one thing one day and something else
(01:05:43):
the next, but he has just been so consistent over
that period. I mean the highlight for me probably that
eagle that he scored on the twelfth yesterday on a
par four. There's a debate with it. In fact, there's
been he once had three eagles in a tournament on
par fours.
Speaker 14 (01:06:01):
Ever has been such.
Speaker 7 (01:06:03):
A regularity in that regard. But he had a six
five meter.
Speaker 20 (01:06:06):
A wedge and then he spun it back pretty much
yo yoed back into the cup from about a couple
of feet away. It was just such precision and he
did look delighted after that one, so a bit of
a nod to the gallery and moving on in his
power blue strides.
Speaker 7 (01:06:21):
But he was in the fine form spectacular.
Speaker 2 (01:06:24):
We spoke yesterday about how far ahead you'd have to
be to feel like you were safe going into the
fourth round. He took what a four shot lead into
the final round, which he's held well up till this point. Anyway,
on a course like this where low scoring seems to
be something that can be done pretty easily, could he
just play very conservatively today to hold onto that buffer
or will he be aware that players below him can
(01:06:47):
shoot really really low scores.
Speaker 20 (01:06:49):
Look, given the conditions Piney, I don't think he can
be safe in any capacity here. I mean if he
was to play and shoot even par I'm not convinced
that he would win. Actually, it's just still it's still
conditions again, barely a puff of wind, the sun's out,
the greens are playing true, you're getting plenty of purchase
(01:07:09):
for your shots, or plenty of distance for your shots
out on a relatively dry ground. There's going to be
guys hunting him down for sure. I think he'd has
to be two maybe three under to start looking really convincing.
And it's jilly days and has round the course. But
just the way that the players have been seeing off
and the ones I've been watching this morning out on course,
Michael Henry among them as well, I might add who's
been going pretty well too. They just look pretty assured
(01:07:33):
in the golfing strokes and on the greens as well.
I think there's no way you could rest on your lawrels.
I mean, twenty two I don't think I've ever had
I've been twenty two under in my life with birdies ever,
you know, on aggregate, I mean, just to be that under,
you think, oh, you'll be safe with that, but I
don't think so.
Speaker 7 (01:07:51):
Here, I think it's all to play for.
Speaker 2 (01:07:53):
And I know you've talked about the course record or
maybe it's the New Zealand Golf Open record. But if
he does catch FYT today that is under three, doesn't it.
Speaker 20 (01:08:01):
Oh for sure, there's twenty seven under the moment that
was Daniel there's but back in twenty eighteen here and yeah,
he's got five or six strokes to beat it. So yeah,
I think it's well within within his grasp. But possibly
others as well.
Speaker 7 (01:08:14):
But he'd be the main one.
Speaker 20 (01:08:16):
He doesn't get it. It might be a struggle for others.
So yeah, that's something to watch out for as well.
So twenty seven unders the key number. If he gets
to twenty eight, that becomes his.
Speaker 2 (01:08:25):
And as far as conditions are concerned, I know it's
one thing that the organizers simply cannot control, and that's
the weather. But they've been pretty lucky, haven't they. And
it's by the sounds of it, and from what you've
been saying and that some of the footage I've seen,
it's been a fairly cool place to be these last
four days.
Speaker 6 (01:08:40):
Oh.
Speaker 20 (01:08:40):
Absolutely, you've got this incredible sort of dry whether anything's
you've got the crumpled sandpaper crown range surrounding you.
Speaker 7 (01:08:49):
That there hasn't really been a hint of any where
weather coming through that, and I think that.
Speaker 20 (01:08:55):
That's putting in the state that way that it was
a suggestion you might be scattered showers yesday, but nothing
ever came of that. It's just a bit of overcast
cloud at various stages then. But today there's also this
cloud around, but I can't see it affecting the round
in terms of rain in any way, shape or form.
Speaker 7 (01:09:12):
People are out and they've got.
Speaker 20 (01:09:13):
The sort of look as the Bermuda shows, the polo
shirt and the camp or you know, the wide roomed
sun hat, sunscreen on slip slop slap, and people just
just loving and out there they take those pogo stick
type seats out and just park up in one of those,
or you get your beach's recliner out, get yourself seas
under maybe a pinoak tree or an elm, something that
(01:09:36):
weeping willow even is a bit of a favorite round
the Millbrook course, and just enjoy the goal.
Speaker 2 (01:09:41):
Oh the way you use your vocabulary is just top
drawer as always orders, top drive, just before you go,
We'll get you on again next home.
Speaker 20 (01:09:49):
Doesn't get me under par much more Monto fighting.
Speaker 2 (01:09:51):
No you're right, No, you're right. But how's what I
need to know? Crucially? Has the Has the media catering
lived up to everything else wrapped around this tournament?
Speaker 14 (01:10:02):
Absolutely?
Speaker 7 (01:10:03):
Have you with the media caring? I don't no doubt
about it.
Speaker 20 (01:10:05):
I did slip out, you know, I mean, I hope
this is orders are not listening. But I did slip
out for the ham and cheese toasty, yes, and that
was rather tasty as well. Michelin star sort of stuff
in the general green where they called the hide here
the center of activities.
Speaker 7 (01:10:21):
And that was delicious too.
Speaker 20 (01:10:23):
I fancy myself an ice cream lader as well, maybe
just as a bit of a treat a.
Speaker 2 (01:10:26):
Roll, keep us posting on that and on the Gulf
and we'll catch up with there an hour or so
if that's okay, God sir, plenty of time, good man.
Thanks orders Andrew Ordison our man at Maulbrook, well who better?
Who better? And look I mean the way he uses
his words. Read him at enziherld dot cot ont Nz
because yeah, he's got a very very unique and in
(01:10:49):
wonderful way of describing things using the written word and
the spoken word as well. So we'll get orders back
on and as I say, around an hour or so,
just to check on the progress. But contact. Coke holds
a four shot lead early in his final round. He's
twenty two under the card. Ryan Peak at eighteen under
an outright second, Bobby by Elvis Smiley, En Snayeman and
Kazuki Higger are all at seventeen under. The leading key
(01:11:12):
we currently is Sam Jones and a tie for seventh.
He is sixteen under the card one under through one
hole today, still six shots back from the leader fourteen nil.
The Canberra Raiders lead the Warriors with seven minutes to
go in the first half. It's not going the way
they would have hoped in Vegas a third try without
a third try, Andy McDonald it was so the Raiders
(01:11:35):
have certainly taken the ball by the horns in Vegas
early in this one. Fourteen nil with a kick to
come and seven minutes to go in the first half.
So not the start that New Zealand Warriors fans and
the team themselves would have hoped for it under the
roof at Allegiance Stadium in Vegas. We might just hold
while we check on Jamal Foggarty's ability to land the
(01:11:56):
conversion right, so I can give you a right up
to date score here. He has nailed it down the middle.
Sixteen nil, sixteen nil, thirty three minutes gone in Vegas.
Still plenty of time for the Warriors, but they are
going to have to get a bit of a move on.
Just quick check on the cricket as well. Auckland won
fifty nine for seven and the thirty seventh over batting
(01:12:17):
first against Canterbury and the Ford Trophy Cricket Final twenty
to two. Let's get a breakaway when we come back.
James mcconey a huge part of our Sundays. He's with
us next year on Weekend Sport.
Speaker 1 (01:12:28):
The tough questions off the Turf, Weekend Sport with Jason
Pine and GJ. Gunderholmes, New Zealand's most trusted home builder,
News TALKSB.
Speaker 2 (01:12:38):
News Talks AIRB and Weekend Sports seventeen away from two.
When I wrote down at the start of the week
the list of media who I thought would be in Vegas,
James mcconey was at the top of the list. This
is catastrophic. How have you not been sent to Vegas?
Speaker 14 (01:12:58):
Yeah, exactly. I don't know. Maybe they'll think of me
as a flight risk. You know, it's like mcconey Vegas
as it worth at it work the headlines. Will we
ever come back? Will it be like the Hangover? Will
he suddenly end up with a baby on a front
pack and a tiger in his room? Chances are yes.
Speaker 2 (01:13:16):
Well, I had a chat to Mike Lane an hour
or so ago, and he's got me to call his
wife to let her know that he may not be
coming back.
Speaker 14 (01:13:24):
That's no surprise. I mean Mike Lane. I mean I
would have been part of that Mike Lane acc or
turn of commentary collective party. I would have been part
of that, and that's as dangerous for starters. So yeah,
it's better to steer clear. I've got major fomo. But
at the moment I'm just watching and the Warriors of
leading three soft tries, one was a length of the
(01:13:45):
field and decepted as well, which would just you know,
repiand's right there. But hey, when you're in Vegas, it's
still good times even if they lose.
Speaker 2 (01:13:53):
Right, Well, that's right, and I know you've probably turned
away for the television to give full focus to your
radio slot, which I greatly appreciate. But the Warriors have
just got to try in the corner. So sixteen to four,
kick to come. They're on their way back.
Speaker 14 (01:14:05):
James, why is my I went back? I think to
look at it says it's low. How come you're ahead
of me? Pine? Are you so advanced? Great to hear?
Great to hear. But yeah, I'm watching on sky Sport
now and I just see that we're on the attack.
But there's been some good position. I actually like Lequa
Halasima who's on the on the bench and as we
(01:14:27):
just see to trying now, yes, nice try. The scored
by cap has gone yes.
Speaker 8 (01:14:35):
Good stuff.
Speaker 14 (01:14:36):
Hey, look I the way I feel about the wires
is that they've become such a you know, a big
ticket item. Everyone wants to, everyone supports them. They've come
out of the woodwork. It's all been since COVID, really,
and I know rugby is is panicking because the Warriors
are so popular, the NRL is growing, But I think
(01:14:57):
it's actually quite good for rugby. People like contact sport.
That's a good thing and all all rugby needs to
do is make sure that their product is great, and
that has been so f this year. There's just been
a couple of glitches and one of them happened last
night at the end of the Blues Hurricanes game. You
talked about that on.
Speaker 2 (01:15:14):
Your show by It we actually had We had Paul
Tito on the radio about half an hour ago. What
did you make of it?
Speaker 8 (01:15:22):
All?
Speaker 14 (01:15:23):
Very confusing having a doctor pretty much decide who gets
to put the ball into the scrum. In the end,
Sam knock looked in a bad way. So if he
didn't have an HIA, did you see his face something
seriously wrong?
Speaker 18 (01:15:38):
Yep.
Speaker 14 (01:15:40):
So if he didn't have an HI they couldn't They
trying to find footage of where he got hit, where
he got knocked, and I just thought, think, wow, that's
quite a big call to make on the day and
forcing Boden Barrett to put the ball into the scrum. Look,
I know you're a Hurricanes fan, but I think it's
probably helps just to see the Blues get across the
(01:16:01):
line at least once. And I think we'll be hearing
more about the influence of doctors on games now.
Speaker 2 (01:16:09):
Indeed, because I thought they and I can't remember, I
thought it was the mouth guard that gave you the
that gave you the indication that somebody had been hit
hard enough or their or their head had moved enough
that it was that it reached an HIA threshold. But
you're right, I think they were looking. I think they
were on skyg rewinding back to try and find what happened.
Speaker 14 (01:16:32):
Well, you can still get hit in the back of
the head, can't you, And with your mouth open sometimes,
you know what I mean. Like in the furthest part
away from the mouthguard, I just looked at Sam Knock's
face and I think, well, he's whatever he's got. He's
not faking. He's not going back out there either. So yeah,
it's an interesting rule. But look, to be honest, both
(01:16:52):
those teams are spluttering along. The Hurricanes definitely aren't the
same threat they were last year. I'm trying to work
out here and this more. Is it Jordi Barrett or
is it Reuben Love? But there's a pretty much both.
Speaker 2 (01:17:06):
Yeah, it's like there and yeah, a couple of other
positions as well. I think Harry Godfrey's a very promising player.
It's got a lot of points last night, including a
nice try, but yeah, it's he's stillly and his tenure there. Hey,
can we talk about your chiefs? Are they beat the Blues?
They beat the Crusaders yesterday afternoon they almost raised their
bet again beating the Brumbies forty nine thirty four. Should
(01:17:27):
we just give you guys the trophy? Now?
Speaker 14 (01:17:30):
Oh, I'd love that to happen, Poney. I would actually
preferred of one a couple of years ago when Razor
breakdanced on Waikato Stadium there that that was the one
that we really needed two years on. Yeah, that's great.
I think we're looking in good shape. But now Damien
McKenzie's injury, have you had a doctor on the show
(01:17:50):
yet today?
Speaker 18 (01:17:51):
Finally?
Speaker 14 (01:17:52):
Because he's been really the standout player in Super rugby
so far this season, him and Tomty Taveta Nawai have
been two unbelievable standouts, and McKenzie getting that knee injury.
It's pretty bad. But at least Josh Jake in there
at ten looks the goods and you know there's a
little bit of depth and thank goodness for Manassa master Ellie.
(01:18:13):
He's been around forever, but he's only twenty eight and
he slotted in on the wing there. So yeah, we
wait and see about Dmac, but I think things are
looking great. And speaking of missing Jordie, Will Quinty Pyre
at twelve looks like he could slott in to the
All Blacks right now. He's looking in such good form.
Speaker 2 (01:18:31):
Yeah he was. He was a standout, wasn't he, Quinte Pie,
he looked, he looked awesome. I think I saw Dmax
signing autographs afterwards. I know that's not an indication of
whether your knees are okay or not, but I get
the feeling if it was serious, he might have gone
in an under and gone to hospital or whatever it was.
I got treatment, so I you know, that could be
a good sign that it might not be quite as
bad as first feared.
Speaker 14 (01:18:52):
Yes, exactly. That is that is a good sign. And look,
I think it sounds like they're not worried about McKenzie.
So you know, that's that's the latest that just came
through on the email. I don't know if you heard
that little thing, but yeah, so that's that's a good sign.
Speaker 8 (01:19:11):
Look.
Speaker 14 (01:19:11):
The other thing with Super Rugby really is white A
Pacifica looking so good I think against the Highlanders and
Artie just lifting his game. That battle with Taveta and
Mali was so intriguing and but it's almost like you
took it personal, like Michael Jordan from there from the documentary,
(01:19:31):
you know, the last start and he was but I
thought there was one thing there that One thing I
must note about Super Rugby is the high tackle rulings
are in absolute shambles at the moment. So Cam Miller
went high in a head clash. I know it was
his first interaction of the game when he came on.
Now that would normally be a card, but because he
(01:19:52):
got so badly hurt, it's almost they gave him a pass.
We've seen a part of our red card for that
against Ireland when he had a head clash accidental head
clash with Gary Ringrose, he sort of came to and
was given the show a red card, but no oakhads
for Miller on Friday night. I think that really does
impact the game a lot. So if they're serious about
these head clashes, the same thing happened in a week
(01:20:16):
two with Hunter pasce Armi for the Reds on Moana again.
So they're on the rough end of the stick right now.
They've got to get that right. I think it's pretty simple,
but they're failing.
Speaker 2 (01:20:28):
Hey, just before you go, I know you wouldn't have
had the chance to watch it, probably watching the Chiefs
around about the same time, but we had a four
all draw in the A League yesterday. Incredible go media.
Speaker 14 (01:20:38):
I mean, that's it's craz I mean, you're living in
the wrong city now, Pineyer. I know that you're looking
at property and Aukland. That's the what people are saying,
and that I feel really need jet reaction from yourself
to be starting to scout around one Tree Hills for
some couple a nice little bed set or even you know,
could you push out to a townhouse there. I mean,
(01:21:00):
the thing is that that game, that rivalry is really important.
I know, like you said in your commentary, it sucked
the energy out of the stadium, but it might be necessary.
You don't want your fairy tale ending mid season. You
want your fairytale ending to be lifting the toilet seat,
which is the trophy for the A League, right, yeah,
(01:21:20):
the toilet seat. So winning that game, yes, it would
have been a wonderful moment for the fans, but having
them sort of give them that wake up call, it
will change everything about the way they analyze that game.
Two penalties conceded, that soft goal at the end. I
think it Pineker tried to volley it away when they
could have just got a head on it, right, And
(01:21:41):
so now they look at that review and be tougher
on themselves. I think it's for the best.
Speaker 2 (01:21:46):
Pony, I agree. I agree. I was hoping I could
just sort of doss down at your place, but if
I have to buy property, then you know I have
to buy property.
Speaker 14 (01:21:56):
You're always welcome, mate, coming up.
Speaker 3 (01:21:58):
With good boy.
Speaker 2 (01:22:01):
Thank you, James, James mcconey mess a part of our Sundays.
Always love our chats. Thanks mate. We'll do it again
next Sunday or is that halftime? Are behind by sixteen
points to four seven away from two news Talks.
Speaker 1 (01:22:11):
MB analyzing every view from every angle in the sporting
world weekends for it with Jason Vye. They call eight
hundred and eighty eight News Talks NB four to two.
Speaker 2 (01:22:22):
After our news at two o'clock, we're going to shift
our focus across to cricket because the black Caps tonight
play their final pull match at the Champions Trophy. They're
already into the semi finals, of course, so the results
not that important, but the performance may well be. They
take on India in Dubai. As I say, it doesn't matter,
they'll still go into the semi finals. If they win,
(01:22:44):
they will play Australia. If they lose, they will play
South Africa. Which is the better deal for the black Caps.
I'll still want to win the game, obviously, but which
is the better matchup for them? Mike Hessen will know.
He's one of the more astute cricket analysts going around.
Former black Caps coach. He's with us after two o'clock
and we'll relive that incredible four to four league draw yesterday.
Speaker 1 (01:23:09):
It's the only place to discuss the biggest sports issues
on and after field. It's all on win James Ford
with Jason Vane on your home of Sports Talk.
Speaker 2 (01:23:21):
Hi out seven past two. This is Weekend Sport on
News Talks thereb I'm Jason Pine with Andy McDonald alongside.
We're here till three talking sport. Then Tim Beveridge's back.
I don't know where he was yesterday, clearly a higher calling,
but Bevo back and the Weekend Collective chair after three
o'clock before we hand over a lot to get through.
(01:23:43):
We'll keep eyes on the Las Vegas where the Worries
are up against the Raiders and up against it really,
as they've started the second half sixteen to four behind.
So we'll update you as and when required from there,
as we will from the Ford Trophy Final, where Auckland
continued to try and build some sort of competitive total
(01:24:06):
two one hundred and five for eight in the forty
fourth over. Louis Delport is that the wicket with lockey stackpole,
so still six overs to go but yeah eight down,
But who knows? This has been played at the University
of Otago Oval in Dunedin, so I have no idea
(01:24:26):
what the wicket's doing down there. Haven't ready had eyes
on it to know whether it's been excellent bowling from
Canterbury or substandard batting from Auckland, but I do know
that it's two hundred and seven for eight now two
hundred and seven for eight after forty four overs with
Stackpole and Delport to get it. We'll keep eyes on that,
and of course the New Zealand Golf Open is into
its fourth and final rounds. Everybody at Millbrook is chasing
(01:24:51):
guntac Co, the Korean at the top of the leaderboard.
He has picked up another shot today to move to
twenty three under. He's won under through four holes, but
Bobby By the Chinese golfer, tearing it up early three
under through four holes move to twenty under the card overall,
so just three shots behind and a typher third one
(01:25:13):
shot further back Kazuki Higa from Japan and Ryan Peak
from Western Australia nineteen under. Finding the leading keiwe you've
got to scroll down of it to Sam Jones. He
is fifteen under the card, so eight shots back from
guntuk Co of Korea. Canberra have crossed again. They're checking
(01:25:34):
it so if they score. If this is given, it's
twenty points to four with four minutes gone in the
second half, So we'll keep an eye on that rather
than hang around and see what the bunker decide, I
think we sort of move on. Mike Hessen standing by
the chat to us he's gonna look at the black
Caps India game tonight. Not so much around this game
(01:25:56):
because the Champions Trophy in New Zealand and India are
both already through to the semi finals. Depending on the
result tonight, New Zealand will play either South Africa or
Australia in the semi finals. What is Mike Hessen seen
from the team that he used to coach in terms
of their their excellent form in the last little while.
I think it's five is at five One Day International
(01:26:17):
wins in a row, and there will be tough tonight.
As I say, it doesn't actually matter in terms of
the result. But I begin to hear from Mike Hesson
as well, who he thinks New Zealand matches up best against.
And Noel Barkley, former All White striker and a very
keen observer of football at all levels, going to try
and break down the four all draw we saw yesterday
(01:26:39):
at go Media Stadium. Auckland FC had the best defense
in the league before yesterday, still do actually, but they
let four and they scored for themselves, so that'll be pleasing.
What did Noel Barkley see and that? And I say
back to the golf with Andrew Ordison at Milbrook. Are
your calls of correspondents always welcome on the show, Oh,
eight hundred and eighty ten eighty nine, two ninety two
(01:26:59):
if you would prefer to correspond with us by text
or flick as an email. Jason at newstalksb dot co
dot n Z eyes up to the screen where the
try has been awarded. So caner out to a twenty
points to four lead with a relatively comfortable kick to comes.
So let's call it twenty two twenty two to four
(01:27:20):
with five minutes gone in the second half. A bit
of work to do for the warriors. Let's leave that
off to one side. With a time approaching eleven past two.
As we always do it around about this time on
weekend sport, it's time to catch you up, to get
you across some of the stuff that's happened while you
had your mind elsewhere. In case you missed it. FA
(01:27:40):
Cup Action overnight Preston North End with a big one
over their championship rivals Burnley.
Speaker 21 (01:27:48):
Oh it changed it ag Will Chean surely fucked Preston's
place in the quarter finals. Burny concede three in a
game for the first change this season.
Speaker 2 (01:28:03):
They've had a wretchet afternoon here. Also last night Crystal
Palace betting Millwall three to one, Bournemouth getting home against
Wolves five to four on penalties in Manchester City three
to one winners over Plymouth, Argyle to the ICC Champions Trophy,
South Africa completing a miserable Champions Trophy campaign for England.
Speaker 16 (01:28:23):
David Miller well and a whole lot to gain to
be fair to walk out with just six more to
get back.
Speaker 6 (01:28:34):
Thanks for coming.
Speaker 2 (01:28:35):
Howfully done by David Miller. Poemically by South Africa. A
comfortable seven wicket win for the Proteas to top their Paul.
Speaking of being on top, lydia Co at the top
of the leader board at the HSBC Women's World Championship.
Speaker 20 (01:28:57):
Sir lydia Co to the top of the leader board
at ten under par.
Speaker 2 (01:29:01):
A one shot lead heading into the final round. There
to Rugb Super Rugby Opicky is un the way Mata
Tu dug Deep to beat chiefs Manawah in Hamilton.
Speaker 6 (01:29:10):
Now they're going what if through we go?
Speaker 10 (01:29:13):
Amy Duke proceeds just walk through the middle and scored.
The Pry and the Mother two go to the lead
for the first time.
Speaker 2 (01:29:21):
And held at thirty one to twenty five. The final
score in Hamilton and the Blues women put fifty on
the Hurricanes power. It's all forward momentum.
Speaker 22 (01:29:30):
They've just got to maintain their going forward and writes Hork,
we'll get a double. So many spectacular tries in this time.
The big forwards roll their sleeves up and rumble over
the twiline.
Speaker 2 (01:29:42):
Fifty points to ten for the Blues there and finally
to the men's camp in Super Rugby. Another thriller played
out out west in Perth, the Reds stealing a win
over the Force Rapacific.
Speaker 14 (01:29:56):
With another thriller, Nassa to the front, Chowder comes from
the right a minute ago.
Speaker 22 (01:30:04):
Put out to work through the Force, Simmer gets within
foll tell you what think you, zab, He's got this score.
Speaker 6 (01:30:15):
Take you.
Speaker 20 (01:30:17):
Make it everything.
Speaker 1 (01:30:20):
Breaking down the Hail Mary's and the epic fails. Weekend
Sport with Jason m News Talk zemb.
Speaker 2 (01:30:29):
Coming up fourteen past two. Well as mentioned and in
case you missed it, a sorry end to a dismal
campaign for England and crickets Champions Trophy, thumped by seven
wickets by South Africa in Karachi. We're already out of
the tournament after losing their opening two matches. England all
out for one hundred and seventy nine in the thirty
ninth over. The Proteins needed just twenty nine overs and
(01:30:50):
one ball to complete their successful run chase. It was
also England's seventh consecutive One Day International defeat. New Zealand, meantime,
doing a lot better. They play their final group game
against India overnight tonight, having already qualified for the Semis
with wins over Bangladesh and host Pakistan.
Speaker 22 (01:31:11):
That's it, It's all over. Henry does the job and
New Zealand win this match convincingly by sixty runs.
Speaker 2 (01:31:21):
It's been a polished performance. Former black Caps coach and
one of the more astute cricket analysts going around, Mike
Hessen is with us, having watched I reckon pretty much
every ball of the tournament, judging from your social media
and the stuff I've seen from your Mike, thanks for
joining us. What have you made of New Zealand's performances
so far in their opening wins over Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Speaker 23 (01:31:42):
I thought very yeah, very clinical, really done as much
as they needed to do. I thought against Pakistan, which
was always going to be a really tough game. Obviously
against the home nation, New Zealand were exceptional. And what
I like, I guess is that there are so many
different players that have stood up at different times. So
obviously Rutchan missed the first part, you know, turns up
(01:32:04):
and bangs out one of the best hundreds you'll and
then prior to that, Tom Lathan was obviously under the
pump heading into the tournament and then just showed you
know how good he is. And Will Young, you know,
under pressure losing two early wickets, you know, losing Kine
and Devin, and then Will Young, who probably wasn't even
going to be playing that game, you know, steps up
as well. So and you know the spinners have showed
(01:32:27):
that they are as good as any other team around
as well. So you know, Michael Brace Will stood up
along with Mitchell Satner when required. So yeah, just a
really nice performance and I think they're taking along well.
Speaker 2 (01:32:37):
Yeah, I want to drill down into a couple of
points you've made there. Let's start in the top four.
Bit of a log jam there, Hess, because if we
assume Williamson and Ravendra are two of the top four,
when Daryl Mitchell comes back, who misses out Young, Conway Mitchell,
what's the makeup of the top four.
Speaker 23 (01:32:53):
Yeah, look, I mean Conway's likely to miss out, but
it's a shame because he's actually has started to point
some touch and you know the Try series he looked
one of their best players and I think he would
have played ahead of will Young in that opening match.
Speaker 3 (01:33:07):
I think if Ruchien would have played.
Speaker 23 (01:33:08):
But you know, the quality of will Young's hundred just
I guess reaffirmed to the side that you can't leave
him out. You know, he's been exceptional the last eighteen months.
So it's a shame because Conway's actually played a lot
of cricket when he hasn't been in great touch and
everyone's sort of been calling for his head and now
he's actually playing beautifully and he's probably going to miss out.
So I think Mitchell just slots back in the fore
(01:33:31):
where he was before he gets sick.
Speaker 2 (01:33:33):
Ruchi and Ravender he mentioned him before the hundred against
Bangladesh one hundred and twelve one hundred and five balls
without really even looking like he was trying. What do
you think Ruchian Revendra's ceiling might be.
Speaker 5 (01:33:45):
Look, it's early, isn't it.
Speaker 23 (01:33:48):
But the technique that he has is so repeatable, and
I mean he's built that up over obviously a long
period of time. You know, he's the epitome of the
ten thousand hours are ye just trying to you know,
perfect things and his technique and all conditions around the
world will stand up. It's just you know, whether he
can keep, like guess, that drive to be successful every day,
(01:34:09):
and you know that he seems to have. He seems
to have found the tempo that he needs to bat
add an international cricket and he's spent a few years
in domestic cricket trying to find it. You know, had
the odd game, you know New Zealand a and then
still went back again never quite clicked. And then once
it clicked that you know that that will cup just
over a year ago in India. He just hasn't looked
(01:34:30):
back and across all formats. So there's no reason obviously
if he can continue doing what he's doing that he
can't be right up there in the top echelon of our.
Speaker 2 (01:34:39):
Batsman Michael Bracewell one for thirty eight and four for
twenty six and his two ten over spells. What is
he doing with the ball that is so effective.
Speaker 23 (01:34:49):
Well, he's always bring the stumps into play, so even
though he's bowling to right handers, you know, he's not
afraid of throwing the ball outside off spinning back to
the stumps. So you know, often they say, and you
know white ball cricket, you know you're off spinner can't
bowl to the right hander. But he's got his ability
and he's got a lot of overspin on the ball,
so he's got huge fingers, so he gets huge amount
(01:35:10):
of revs on the ball, which whilch.
Speaker 3 (01:35:11):
Get it to dip.
Speaker 23 (01:35:12):
So even if you are looking to take him downtown,
you know he gets that overspin, so you end up
hitting the top of the bat. You know, you don't
hit you don't hit exactly where you want, so it
either hits the inside r or the or the top corner.
So he's just you know, he's just a really subtle,
skillful bowler, and he's got a he's got quite a
bit of bravery, you know, in terms of being able
(01:35:33):
to throw the ball up and take take the pace
out of it, very similar to much statna.
Speaker 2 (01:35:36):
Over half of the overs bold across the entire tournament
have been bold by spinners. But what other most effective
steam bowl is doing really well that this tournament has.
Speaker 6 (01:35:48):
Well?
Speaker 23 (01:35:48):
Then woke at too early because they're swinging the new
ball and I mean they have to pitch it up,
but pitching it up in Pakistan is probably two meters
shorter than it is in New Zealand because the low
skiddy bounce. So they're pitching it up. They're finding a
link that still brings in the top of the stumps
and therefore allowing the ball to swill, but also not
you know, not that long half folly where you can
(01:36:09):
you can lean into it easily.
Speaker 5 (01:36:10):
So they're doing that.
Speaker 23 (01:36:11):
And then at the back end, when you know everyone
else is going around the park, they're actually hitting the corners.
So they're not they're not going out to stumps. They're
either trying to hit the inside heel, they're trying to
bowl that slide we'll bounce through. All that bounce is
sort of just over your left eye, or they're hitting
the wideline, you know, they're not bowling down Main Street,
which is sort of down that you know, off stump
(01:36:32):
to fifth stump, which is pretty much where the batters
are trying to line it up at that time.
Speaker 2 (01:36:36):
Are you starting to see Mitchell Santner's Captain c style
start to develop in fifty over cricket.
Speaker 23 (01:36:42):
Yeah, I think we are. I think he's he's certainly
not afraid of using spin, and I suppose that's you know,
obviously byproduct of what he does. But he also you know,
he's he's seeing a quick match up and he's he's
instinctively making the change. You know, you see Phillips coming
when they are too left handers, you know, when they're
playing Bangladesh, you know straight away you bring them in.
It might only be for two overs, but that just
(01:37:04):
gives them a lot of flexibility. I think we're going
to see a little bit more of his style with
the next selection because at the moment our seamers are
very front end loaded. So you know, all three of
our seamers, you know, Henry O'Rourke and Jamison are very
much new ball bowlers and they're very good in the
(01:37:25):
first fifteen overs of the map. Neither of them you
would say specialists at the back end. So it's just
whether the New Zealand are going to be happy going
that way and trying to take wickets early and then
squeeze with spin, or whether they might look at someone
like a Duffy who can probably more control the middle
in the end a little bit better than Jamison for example.
Speaker 2 (01:37:43):
So that'll be the style they want to go.
Speaker 3 (01:37:45):
You know they want to go.
Speaker 23 (01:37:46):
Do we want to attack with Jamison or we want
to have a bit more control with someone like Duffy.
Speaker 2 (01:37:51):
You're tweeted last night if someone says the New Zealand
the India match at the Champions Trophy is a dead rubber,
they clearly don't understand the psyche of top athletes today.
How important is a good performance for New Zealand tonight?
Speaker 23 (01:38:05):
Well, I mean New Zealand one one days in a row.
Now that's you know, that is that gives you confidence.
You know, that gives you a real belief heading into
the playoff side of things. So the last thing you
want to do is take the foot off the gas.
That we know one in that lineup that's saying hey
give me a rest. I can guarantee you that you know,
they'll be wanting to play against India in Dubai. They
will be wanting to challenge themselves against the best, and
(01:38:25):
they won't be wanting to stand out and quite rightfully,
they'll want they'll be wanting to win and that'll obviously
dictate who they play in the Semis. But you know
the most important thing is that New Zealand win and
they gain confidence heading into the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (01:38:38):
All right, And if they do win, they'll face Australia.
If they were to lose tonight, they'll take on South Africa.
Do you think it's that New Zealand match up better
against one or the other of those two nations.
Speaker 23 (01:38:50):
I think New Zealand match up better against Australia at
the moment, just with the Australian squad that they have.
I mean that bowling line up is very inexperienced. Bar
Adam Zampa. You know, we saw Spencer Johnson the other
day in conditions that you know were very favorable. You know,
they should have had it had Afghanistan four for twenty
on that sort of surface. If if Spencer Johnson was
(01:39:12):
able to land the ball in the same spot, you
know more than twice. So if they had a Josh
Hazelwood or Mitch or a Cummins or even a Stark,
you know, that game would have been over before it started.
So I think, you know, the Aussie batting lineup is
still dangerous, but they don't have that middle order power
that they that they had previously either, you know, with
your Stillness and Mitch marsh and coast. So there's there's
(01:39:35):
definitely some holes on that Australian side. You know, Matt
Schortz just got out injured as well, so they are
they are reeling a bit. That's another reason why New
Zealand have to make sure they put the foot down
against India today.
Speaker 2 (01:39:47):
Pretty brutal hours for cricket fans on this side of
the world. Here ten o'clock starts New Zealand timing. You're
getting any sleep.
Speaker 3 (01:39:54):
Not a lot?
Speaker 23 (01:39:55):
I mean I genually log in about eight thirty for
the pre shows over there and finished about seven in
the morning, so it's I didn't stay the whole night
last night. Thinkfully, I've got a bit of sleep, but yeah,
tonight it'll be a big night.
Speaker 2 (01:40:06):
Sure, fantastic. Well appreciate you taking the time to chet
to us. As always, always appreciate your expertise.
Speaker 5 (01:40:12):
Pleasure, Thanks Bunny.
Speaker 2 (01:40:13):
No, thank you Mike Mikesessen there, former Black Caps coach
and yeah, highly sought after cricket analysts. So yeah, ten
o'clock tonight. That game is underway. New Zealand up against
India in Dubai. As I've said a couple of times,
doesn't matter. If New Zealand lose the game, they will
still go through to the semifinals. If they were to lose,
they will take on South Africa. If they win the game,
(01:40:36):
they will face Australia. That's the way that the drawer
is at the moment, and that game, regardless of whether
they finished top or second, is on Wednesday night. Wednesday
night at ten o'clock. Doesn't matter which of the results
happens tonight, the semi final involving New Zealand Wednesday night
against either South Africa or Australia from ten o'clock. Now,
(01:41:03):
I just looked up and I saw two screens. I
was looking at the cricket. Andy's alerted me to the
rugby League. Is that another Canberra try we see up there?
I wish you hadn't startled me that way, Andy, But
twenty six points to four now, so this is turning
into a rather unfortunate opening to the twenty twenty five
NRL season for the Warriors. As the Raiders go pretty
(01:41:23):
much the length of the field at Allegiance Stadium to
score another try which should be converted. It's pretty adjacent
to the posts. Twenty six y four likely to be
twenty eight four with twenty four minutes to go in
the NRL for the Warriors. Now, I was just trying
to check on the cricket score because Auckland have actually
(01:41:44):
mounted a pretty good rearguard action to give themselves a
chance in the Ford Trophy Final, having been in deep
stook earlier at twenty for three and then fifty seven
for five, they've got through. I think they've just lost
their ninth wicket looking up at the screen, but two
hundred and thirty eight for nine, led by some pretty
(01:42:06):
good score from their middle and lower order. Simon Keane
forty eight Lockey Stackpole is unbeaten on fifty five. Louis
delport has I think scored his highest ever One Day
score out for thirty six two hundred and thirty eight
for nine worth a couple of overs to go, so look,
(01:42:26):
they could push two fifty. I know in the modern
day game that isn't a big score, but when you're
fifty seven for five, you probably take two fifty. Canterbury
will come out to chase that at the University of
Otago Oval in Dunedin. When this innings eventually wraps up,
we'll give you the completed inning score of Auckland in
the next little while. Two twenty six it is you're
(01:42:47):
watching the cricket. I mean, I think I probably will
watch at least the first innings tonight, certainly on Wednesday night.
See that's nigglie. It's a semi final. You kind of
have to watch it midweek, have to go to work
on Thursday. Yeah, I'll negotiate that. I'll work out mine
agociation tactics for that. Maybe as Wednesday draws a little
(01:43:09):
bit closer, we'll take a break. On the other side,
we'll flick across the football. A four to four draw
between Auckland FC and Adelaide United at go Media Stadium yesterday.
We'll try and unpack that for you with former or
White Noel Barkley.
Speaker 1 (01:43:24):
The biggest seams in sports are on Weekend Sports with
Jason Pain and GJ gunnomes New Zealand's most trusted home builder.
News Talks NB.
Speaker 2 (01:43:33):
Two twenty nine on Weekend Sport. Here on News Talks,
They'd be extraordinary game of football in the A League
at go Media Stadium, Mount Smart yesterday between Auckland f
C and Adelaide United. Late late, late in the game,
Hiroki Sarki, Auckland FC's captain, scored a goal that took
Auckland f C into a four to three lead. This
(01:43:54):
was I think in the second or third minute of
added time and it looked as though Auckland f C
would steal all three points, not steal them, but take
all three points and a seven goal thriller. But there
was more to come.
Speaker 6 (01:44:06):
Still there.
Speaker 3 (01:44:10):
Chapter has been and.
Speaker 21 (01:44:12):
Breams has fine hope from close range and the energy sucked.
Speaker 2 (01:44:19):
Out of this grounds as one important defender score the
goal ethor would give her side victory. The Dutchman Dart
Freens scores the eighth goal of an incredible A League
match and brings it vector four four for all the
final score. Let's bring in former All White striker Noel Barkley,
(01:44:42):
who's been a keen observer of Auckland FC in their
maiden season and has always had a very good footballing brain. Noel,
thanks for joining us. Let's start with what happened during
the game yesterday. Having led two nil, three to one
and four to three late on. Would Auckland FC coach
Steve Kriker see this as as two points dropped?
Speaker 24 (01:45:04):
Well, I think we, I think anybody would and perspective
we'll see it as a.
Speaker 8 (01:45:08):
Point to drop. After the game.
Speaker 24 (01:45:11):
In my group of peers, we just everybody was completely
done and felt like a loss. I had to keep
reminding ourselves that we actually drew with the second best
team in the league. So it felt awful yesterday and
it just was a bit of a killer the way
it happened. But you know, the game had absolutely everything
that you would want any game. Lots of goals, an
(01:45:31):
absolute worldy by with my preer defending for both teams
really for a couple of the goals, and you know,
a game that you're on the edge of the seat.
Some sort of controversy around around the penalties and there's
some discussion around that obviously, but yeah, look what an
advert for the A League. Even the Australians must be
(01:45:51):
starting to think it offers a good thing for the
league because they certainly certainly up in the attendances and
the and the eyeballs and everything's good about it and
great to see the best two teams in the league.
Speaker 2 (01:46:04):
Yeah, now that the narrative coming out of astrolier YaST
was exactly there.
Speaker 3 (01:46:07):
They were.
Speaker 2 (01:46:07):
They were as captivated by it as we all were.
And probably from a neutral's point of view, it's a
lot easy. Yeah, the base rather than being a fan
of one of the teams. Akin, the FC is a team, no,
that's been built on the best defense in the camp.
So how disappointed will they be that they let four
goals and let those leads slip?
Speaker 24 (01:46:26):
Yeah, I mean, I guess you could bring them for
all four goals, because I mean they did they did
get two penalties, and yes they were soft, but there
was you know, there's certainly contact here and there, and
they did defending and the last goal was just absolutely terrible.
So that they'll be guffed because that is their their
men's stay. And then they're not big goal scorers at
(01:46:47):
ten in the last two games and sort of refute that.
Speaker 8 (01:46:50):
But over the over the.
Speaker 24 (01:46:52):
Season they've really sort of been one one, let two no,
and you can go without letting again. So they're not
prolific apart from lately, so they'll be gutted and they'll
be destroyed it. You know, they're given so many goals.
I think it's three to one. They thought the game
is over. I'm not sure what's happened with Max Maler,
whether he's injured. He took him off last week and
(01:47:13):
that was fine because it was it was a walkover,
and but yesterday at three one, that game was far
from over. Fifty five minutes to take away your sort
of men focal point dot front was a bit of
a strange one for me. I can only presume there's
something else going on there.
Speaker 2 (01:47:28):
Yeah, I wonder about Max Marta and whether he's carrying
an injury. But you like that that that change in
formation with Max Marta. Did you and my have been
paid together up top for Auckland f C in the
last few games, but earlier in the season all it
was my up top by himself with sort of more
you know, wide wingers like Gillian and Rogerson and Brumer
behind you like the two pronged detect that Max Marta brings.
Speaker 24 (01:47:50):
Yeah, I think, well it's bought the best in my
because he's better, better facing goal and than back to goal.
Speaker 8 (01:47:57):
You know, he's obviously got a terrific shot.
Speaker 24 (01:48:00):
And Max, I mean Max run has got off.
Speaker 8 (01:48:03):
Rogerson's another one.
Speaker 24 (01:48:04):
They just put themselves a boat and they make it
really difficult for defenders.
Speaker 8 (01:48:08):
They worked really hard and you.
Speaker 24 (01:48:10):
Know they're both popping up with the odd goal and
that had definitely been a bit of a change and
it's brought the best in my and then you know,
really sort of become more of an attacking team. The
first early on games we were sort of scratching wins.
Speaker 8 (01:48:24):
So yeah, look it's it's they.
Speaker 24 (01:48:26):
You know, it's interesting making those subs at fifty five
minutes because the game's not over, especially again at a
team like Adelide. I think I saw it again this
morning and I had a bit of a different perspective.
I think the disappointment took over yesterday. But Adelaide pid
fabulous in the second half. I probably didn't see that yesterday,
so gutted, but they said they've got great and they
(01:48:47):
really really took it to Oakland and and you know,
they put themselves in situations where things happened and goals happened,
in penalties and stuff like that. So the fair played
them and definitely a great side and they'll be stronger
when they get there. Under twenty soccer.
Speaker 2 (01:49:01):
Ruses bag and they let's talk about the penalty. Stave
car sit off towards. He told both were soft. You've
had to look back at them this morning. Do you
have of you?
Speaker 8 (01:49:11):
Yes?
Speaker 24 (01:49:11):
The soft The first penalty, absolutely, he gets touched. And
what I can't understand is why the why Var intervened
because the referee is five yards behind it and clearly
made a decision that the contact wasn't big enough.
Speaker 8 (01:49:26):
But of course once.
Speaker 24 (01:49:27):
Var interapts, you know he's got a back var, so
that in the end I'd say that's a penalty. The
second one, I just don't really know what happened there
that the pictures didn't really show me enough contact. I
have more problem of the second penalty because there was
a file on a halfway line which they just ignored
and the clarty didn't go back and look at and
(01:49:48):
a lot of people are complaining about that, and that
would be my issue the penalty.
Speaker 8 (01:49:52):
The second one he is hardly argue.
Speaker 24 (01:49:54):
Because obviously he's got a little touch and he goes
down and they get a penalty, but I would have
liked Ver to go back and have a look at
what happened before, which they certainly did for the first penalty.
Speaker 8 (01:50:03):
They took it back.
Speaker 24 (01:50:04):
But anyway, look, not everybody going to bitch about the
penlonies and it's overnight. The cracking game, fantastic advert for
the A League. Falkland can just keep going on and
you know, home semi final, maybe a home final. It's
going to be fantastic for football in New Zealand. Wet
round and you know, we all we still want the
Phoenix to be there and competitive and so on, so
(01:50:27):
there's no I take no joy in seeing them in
the current situation. We want this too, strong teams in
New Zealand and as soon as they.
Speaker 8 (01:50:34):
Get back to that the better.
Speaker 2 (01:50:36):
How do you think Aukland FC have so quickly built
such a passionate following Nola. It's the beast to get
in down on matchday, isn't it. And all of the
Riplica shirts, all the community engagement, my goodness made there
was a circus there. You know, what are they doing
so well.
Speaker 24 (01:50:53):
Engagement with with all the different groups. You know that
the port whether it's families, whether it's kids in the playground,
in the lines, to all different categories. You know, the
ownership group group in Area Anna and Eli a are
always there. CEO Nick Becker's walking around shaking everybody's hand.
It's a family thing. It's just it's they've created something
(01:51:16):
that we all hope that we would say one day
in New Zealand, and you have this fanatical group of
fans support expanding week by week who you know, young
guys and girls.
Speaker 8 (01:51:28):
And kids on the periphery. It's just fantastic. I think
it's just we all.
Speaker 24 (01:51:33):
Had this vision that you know, many many years ago,
that this would we would have something like this, and
it's like a steamer at a minute, it just doesn't
seem to stop. And I mean, it's got really relatively
easy games in the next three games, and I think
getting that number one homes semifinal is so important. I
wouldn't really want to be going to play Adelaide away
in a final and maybe jumping ahead too much, but
(01:51:55):
it's hard not to.
Speaker 2 (01:51:56):
Oh, I think you're right now. You look at the table.
The point I got yesterday leaves an eight point buffer
back to Adelaide. You notited and Wiston United who have
played one, you know, one more game. Eight points is
a lot to make up in eight games. It feels
to me as though Auckland FC have one hand on
the on the premius players they call it. Is that
how you say it?
Speaker 24 (01:52:17):
Well, I think I think so. I mean those games
they've got coming up as sort of Newcastle, Brisbane and
Central Coast said a little bit two of those away,
so they're winnable games, you know, if they can sort
of win too and draw on. I think that stem
across the line. They've got a couple of talents. We've
got Sydney away and Melbourne victory away. I think so, yeah,
(01:52:38):
they're going to afford the loss here and there. I
think those three teams, Western, Adelaide and Auckland are just
a bit above the rest. I think the winner will
come out of those three. And then Western are already
shown that they can come to go media Staedum and win.
So yeah, they're the three top teams. Sydney Melbourne team
is not really firing this time around. And yeah, it's
(01:52:58):
a great thing for New Zealand football. That's it's absolutely
truly amazing. And of course next year you've got the
girls coming in and you've got to development income and
then that's really just going to expand the funds.
Speaker 8 (01:53:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:53:12):
Indeed, Well it wouldn't be a great surprise to see
a Grand Final featuring the two teams we saw out
there on go media yesterday. And I think you get
too many arguments about it if that was a game
that we saw a bit later on in the season. Nol,
great to get your expertise. Really appreciate you taking the time.
Speaker 8 (01:53:26):
How's your penny anytime?
Speaker 6 (01:53:27):
Good?
Speaker 2 (01:53:27):
Any mate? That's No Barkley, former All White striker and
as you can hear from that, pretty astute observer of
the game of football. So next up for Auckland FC.
They are away next weekend. Next Sunday night they take
on the Newcastle Jets and then back home to their
fortress of go media Statium. Although it creaked a little
bit yesterday, the Central Coast Marin is on Sunday, March
(01:53:51):
the sixteenth. As far as the table is concerned, eight
points clear, Auckland f C at the top, Western United
in second and Adelaide United in third place. They've both
got thirty two points those two teams, so an eight
point lead with eight game left to play. As I
said to knowl it feels like it is Auckland f
C's to lose now the minor premiership anyway, they go
(01:54:13):
into playoffs after that. But yeah, just some signs yesterday
of of not being able to hold that lead. Steve
Carriker afterwards was most disappointed about that, as he was
with the two penalties that were awarded against his side.
But it's all part of the roller coaster that is
sporting fandom. Warriors fans know all about that. Ten minutes
(01:54:34):
to go in Vegas and Canberra lead the Warriors by
twenty eight points to four. So defeat being stared in
the face by the Warriors in Vegas and I can
TALLI Auckland have on the last ball of the fiftieth
over been dismissed for two hundred and fifty against Canterbury,
which when you're fifty seven for five isn't actually about outcome.
So shortly Canterbury will come out and pursue two hundred
(01:54:57):
and fifty one if they are to win the Ford
Trophy for the summer of twenty twenty four twenty five.
On the other side of this break, we're back to
mil Brook, where the fourth and final round of the
New Zealand Golf Open is currently in progress. Andrew Ordison
with his final report of our show Anyway this afternoon
when we come.
Speaker 1 (01:55:17):
Back, don't get caught offside eighty Weekend Sports with Jason
Paine and GJ Guvnerhomes New Zealand's most trusted home builder
News Talks.
Speaker 2 (01:55:27):
NB sixteen away from three on News Talks there by
Roger two of us A checks scored a try for
the Warriors very much consolation, but he's shown his strength
in his new position on the left wing to crash
over in the corner twenty eight points to eight unconverted.
Seven and a half minutes to go Canberra twenty eight
the New Zealand Warriors eight at Allegiant Stadium in Vegas.
Let's get you back to the New Zealand Golf Open
(01:55:48):
at Millbrook where it's the final round of the tournament.
Andrew Ordison as our man at Milbrook. We've been chatting
across the weekend. Goodententuck co the leader for most of
the second half of the tournament. He came into the
fourth round with a four shot. You'd have those nipping
at his heels Alders eaten into that lead at all.
Speaker 20 (01:56:12):
They haven't the pinally since we last spoke, and I
think it's basically they've bridged the gap to two. I
think when we last week he was perhaps up by three,
he was twenty three under. Overall he has dropped a shown.
He's even part for the day is Guntuck Co so
he's twenty two under at the moment. They're through six holes,
(01:56:33):
so he's just boggy that the six to part four.
He's playing part of the Ryan Peak of course, the
former Viky gang member, and he did a sort of
porridge in Australia, but he's been playing for the last
few years again now.
Speaker 7 (01:56:47):
He's going great.
Speaker 8 (01:56:48):
Guys.
Speaker 20 (01:56:48):
He's gone to twenty under, so he's a couple Underfore
the day started.
Speaker 7 (01:56:53):
Eighteen under the card.
Speaker 20 (01:56:54):
But the other one to watch is the Chinese goal
for Bobby Bay who has also moved to twenty under,
and just a reflection on where the New Zealanders a
rat at the moment. Sam Jones even part for the day,
so he's on fifteen under the time being, so it
still seven shots off that lead. Daniel Herleyer and Michael
Henry one stroke further back.
Speaker 2 (01:57:15):
It seems so odd to get the wobbles when you've
shot a sixty four or sixty one and a sixty six.
I look, he's even par through six holes a least
not I A get two carried away. But is this
I don't know, final round nerves? What do you can
you can you get any sort of gauge from Guntac
Carlors to as there was ability to actually hold his
nerve and hold even if it is a slender lead.
Speaker 20 (01:57:37):
Yeah, I don't think as much in it, to be honest.
I've seen a few of the parts that he's being making.
They probably just haven't sunk like in previous days. But yeah,
just narrowly missing the cups. So I don't think he's
necessarily out of touch just yet. So I would still
be thinking that he is the favorite here, albeit twelve
holes to go. A lot can happen in that time frame,
(01:58:00):
you know, think of back down through the years, the
Greg Normans and John Vandervelds of this world. You can
quickly lose their advantage with just one false move. So
we'll see how that unfolds over the course of the afternoon.
But I just think there's a fever of hunger there
from peak he looks quite the contender for my mind,
nothing to lose, and once he I guess unfools his
(01:58:24):
tee shutch is a big hit of piney and if
he can keep that accurate. So he's struggling yesterday, I
mean he's still got seven under part and he only
hit three of the fourteen fairways. So if he's able
to rectify that and get some accuracy, he could really
be contended here as could buy. And we will once
see how both of those are unfolded as the key
contenders at the moment.
Speaker 2 (01:58:45):
It's quite the story, isn't it quite? The REGs to
riches as you say, from a biky gang member who
spent some time away from home, shall we say to
know to be able to play golf like this?
Speaker 20 (01:58:57):
Absolutely, and it wasn't their majesty's. We don't go too
far down there road. But I think it's a fascinating angle,
isn't it. Any seems to have I guess made a
bit of a change. I think this coach by Richie
Smith has got an excellent reputation in Australia when he
came out of prison and his Churger's life around. I
think the Zoo credit for that, give him a second chance, etc.
(01:59:19):
He really has made the most of it and looks
and terrific form with the golf club and yeah he's yeah,
just made the most of that second opportunity and could
well take it to a tournament Wednesday. And I don't mean,
I don't want to be to speculate too much, but
his problem isn't because he only got here within thirty
(01:59:41):
six hours of the tournament because of visa issues that
you have if you've been in jail, and with how
that might boat for future appearances on various tours and
qualifies the Asian Tour today and all those sorts of
things that could add complications. But I think in his
case it's a living for the now and if he's
able to win a tournament, he good luck to.
Speaker 2 (02:00:01):
Him, absolutely right. So we're not going to have a
keep we win, or are we? I mean that looks
out of reach now for Sam John, for Daniel Hilly,
for Michael Henry and the other. So the weight goes
on for another year for a New Zealand winner of
the New Zealand Open. By the looks of it, orders
it does.
Speaker 20 (02:00:15):
Piney I mean the last time of twenty seventeen Michael Hendry,
and it looks like pushing out to will to nine.
Speaker 8 (02:00:21):
Years at least.
Speaker 20 (02:00:23):
And if you're thinking about it too, I think the
one before Henry was two thousand and three mahal Peers.
So it does stretch back. If their way, they've been
few and far between at the local tournament, and yes,
there's going to be that way again this year by the.
Speaker 7 (02:00:36):
Looks of things.
Speaker 20 (02:00:37):
That don't know unless well, I guess Joe and Tilly
or Hendred the prospects and I want to be able
to turn that around. But they need to do something
pretty so soon, and it need to do something pretty special.
Speaker 2 (02:00:46):
All right, look forward to seeing how it all plays
out over the next two or three hours. Thanks for
all your reports and your color over the last couple
of days on weekend sport orders. Enjoy the home stretch.
Speaker 7 (02:00:57):
We'll do it finey, we'll do looking forward to it.
Speaker 2 (02:00:59):
Andrew Ortison in Milbrook or at Milbrook at the New
Zealand Open. So just to recap, Guntaco is twenty two
under for the tournament. He has even pased through six
holes today a two shot lead. Now from his playing
partner Ryan Peak, who is twenty under the card, and
the Chinese player Bobby Bye also twenty under and an
(02:01:20):
outright fourth position. Kazuki Heger he's two under today through
six holes, nineteen under. So also, I guess you'd say
within striking distance. In fact, I suppose you have to
go down to the likes of Ian Snaman who is
eighteen under, and even the players who are seventeen under
the card, although they are getting a bit later in
their rounds. But yeah, the leading key We Sam Jones
(02:01:42):
at the moment just seems a bit too far back.
Fifteen under the card, so what's that He's seven shots
off the pace and Sam Jones is through seven holes today,
so it would take something pretty special in the final
eleven holes of his round for him, So it pretty
much have to burd most of the holes, wouldnety. Daniel
Hilly has also stayed in touch of the sort of
(02:02:06):
the the upper echelons of the leader board. He's two
under three to eleven holes today, fourteen under for the tournament.
And Michael Henry, who was the last key We winner
in twenty seventeen, also at fourteen under. He said a
good fourth round actually Michael Henry four under through sixteen
holes in his final round. Camberrall led the Warriors by
thirty points to eight with only a couple of minutes
to go in Las Vegas, so a comprehensive win for
(02:02:27):
the Raiders first up and a defeat for the Warriors
in Vegas. And repeating that Auckland have posted two hundred
and fifty in their fifty overs in the Ford Trophy
Final against Canterbury, the Red and Blacks will need two
fifty one to win when they come out to bat
in their fifty overs shortly eight and a half to three.
News Talks edb.
Speaker 1 (02:02:46):
When it's down to the line, you made a call
on eight hundred and eighty ten eighty Weekend Sport with
Jason Hine, News Talks VV.
Speaker 2 (02:02:54):
It's five to three, it's all over Adeligian Stadium in
Las Vegas. The Raiders have run out winners by thirty
points to eight over the New Zealand Warriors in the
NRL season openers, so certainly not the trip to Vegas
that the war Warriors would have hoped for. A happy
Ricky Stewart and Canberra Raiders side are slightly more glum.
Andrew Webster and his Warriors players. The wash up will
(02:03:19):
happen now. Michael Burgess says, we heard from earlier this
afternoon is in Vegas. He can file his report on
the insidherl dot cod on en zed now read it
there and all the reaction here on news talks. He'd
be across the afternoon and into the evening as well.

huge thanks to any McDonald for producing the show. We
were here, there and everywhere across the weekend. Thank you

an exit song goes, well, it's Chris Martin's birthday today,
Not the cricketer, the lead singer of Coldplay, the more
(02:04:00):
globally famous Chris Martin, although in and around New Zealand
cricket Andy, I think our Chris Martin's probably more well known.
Well colplays Chris Martin's never taking five work at Seaton Park,
is he he has not? So you know who had
the more impressive performance there? I think you'd say Chris
Martin the cricketer. It's a very good point you make, Andy,
(02:04:21):
as per usual, Thanks for your work this afternoon see tomorrow.
