successive defeats after coming up short last night against the
Sea Eagles and Manly twenty seven twenty six. The most
likely opponent for the Warriors in an elimination final next
weekend at home will be the Panthers. If they beat
the Dragons later on this afternoon, that'll be the match up.
There is no getting away from how tough that is
(03:22):
going to be. No clarity yet on when that match
will be played, but the Warriors will host that elimination
game next weekend as soon as we know. You'll know
when that game is. The all Whites have gone down
one milt of the Soccaroos in Canberra skip for Chris

Speaker 1 (05:15):
Breaking down the Hail Mary's and the epic fails weekends
sport with Jason n News Talk zenvy.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
So ahead of this monumental test match tonight. A great
pleasure to welcome in one of our truly great all
blacks one hundred and twenty eight Game ninety two test
former All Blacks captain Shan Fitzpatrick who led us to
one of our most iconic series victories, which.
Speaker 5 (05:38):
On the five meter line the All Blacks jive in
with great gusta can they get something?
Speaker 3 (05:43):
Go in here from the Vestas.
Speaker 6 (05:46):
And waits a jib jive jive.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
Honest and New Zealand. That created history. Thirty three points.
Speaker 5 (05:56):
To twenty six South Africa child in vain. It was
a last to che effort by them, and one must
admire their courage. But then four marks to the All Blacks,
great all Black gymnasts, and they have created SG here.
Speaker 4 (06:11):
They created history that nineteen ninety sixteen by winning a
series in South Africa for the very first time, led
by Sean Fitzpatrick who joins US now. Sean, they've been
replaying that nineteen ninety six tour over here all week
in the lead up to this game tonight. The first
time the All Blacks won a series in South Africa,
sealed by that thirty three twenty six win in Pretoria.
(06:33):
And amongst everything else you have achieved in rugby, where
does that series win rank for you?
Speaker 7 (06:39):
I've seen well good morning, Jason. It's just brings a
smile to my face, which you know, I remember that
tour as I was yesterday, and you know it was
quite a few years ago now. But I'm like you, Jason,
I never I never thought i'd go. Firstly, I never
(07:00):
thought i'd be an All Black. Secondly, I never thought
after I became an orbl that I'd actually get the
opportunity to go to South Africa. And you know, I
was brought up, you know, I was brought up on
the you know, the sixties and seventies, and you know,
probably my first real vivid memory of the All Blacks
(07:23):
playing South Africa is when Dad sort of woke me
up in the early hours in nineteen seventy six to
watch the All Blacks play South Africa and Bloomfontaine.
Speaker 8 (07:33):
And I remember looking at the field. I'm saying to Dad,
why is there no grass?
Speaker 7 (07:39):
And then Joe Morgan scored that great try and they
were all wearing pat you know, things over their knees
to stop them getting grazers. But that that was how
we were brought up. And you know, the eighty one tour,
good and bad, whatever and ever it thinks of that
(08:02):
and then and then becoming an All Black who weren't
even on the agenda, and so to go there in
nineteen ninety two and to play against the great nask
both Danny Herber, to play at Alice Park, which was
just a dream come true, and then to go down
to Kings Park, these great stadiums that we'd heard so
(08:25):
much about.
Speaker 8 (08:26):
And that rivalry from me was just immense.
Speaker 7 (08:30):
And you know, to be able to go there in
ninety six and be the first all Black team after
the disappointment obviously had ninety five to play the World
Champions four saturdays in a row. It was we played
with and you know, to win that series. And I've
told you that told you this before in terms of
(08:50):
the great Don Clark when he greeted me in the
tunnel tunnelt loftus verse Velt and hugged me and said
thank you, thank you, thank you.
Speaker 8 (09:01):
I can die a happy man.
Speaker 7 (09:02):
Now, which just sort of summed up, you know, we
were having to educate the Christian Collens.
Speaker 9 (09:08):
Of the world and about what this was all about,
you know, and Harty just did such a great job
of making the whole thirty six of us that were
in that touring party plus the management what this actually
meant and for.
Speaker 7 (09:24):
Us to go four Saturdays in a row and then
to do the job that loft us.
Speaker 10 (09:30):
Yeah, it was a great memory.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
I love that Don Clark story.
Speaker 4 (09:34):
I still get goosebumps every time you tell it, and
today today no exception. There's also some great footage of
those who weren't in the matchday squad up in the
stand and there and their white shirts and their ties
led by Eric Rush and Joan Olomu doing a harker afterwards.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
That must have been spine.
Speaker 8 (09:52):
That's that's what Mike Banks and Artie did so well.
Speaker 7 (09:57):
They made where this thing that we had to win
every game on that tour was. It was an old
traditional tour that probably half the team that had been
brought up with in terms of you know, in the
eighties we toured Island and Wales and we were away
for eight weeks and we had a Saturday team and
a Wednesday team, and it was the job of the
(10:18):
Wednesday team that to put the pressure on the Saturday team.
And there was no way that the Gatlands of the
world were going to get on the Saturday team.
Speaker 8 (10:26):
So that was and that just cemented this power of
thirty six of us.
Speaker 7 (10:35):
They were going to do this job together, and we
all came together on test day and we were powerful
as a unit and you could see that, and that's
what I love. That's probably my other than waving to
the nuns up in the stand it loft us. My
outlasting sort of memory of that day was obviously hitting
(10:56):
the ground hugging hearty, but Jonah and Rushie you know,
on the sideline in their number ones doing to us,
which was pretty special. So we had an amazing bond.
We believed in each other and we were playing the
world champions. And that's that's what I love about about
(11:17):
this afternoon, for this evening is you know they're coming
to our place, and that's that's what I That's what
I love is that they've never won there. These South Africans,
they that double double world champions. All of them have
never won at Eden Park or never won in New Zealand,
(11:40):
and most of them weren't even born the last time
we lost.
Speaker 8 (11:43):
That this is a huge advantage to us. That's as
long as we use that as a real you know,
crux to make sure that we we enjoy it.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
There's no extra burden, is there?
Speaker 4 (11:57):
Shown with that record fifty unbeaten tests at Eden Park,
it should be used as a superpower rather than any
sort of burden.
Speaker 7 (12:05):
No, for me personally is you know, if I went
to Allis Park, it was a challenge mentally to get
over that because we struggled there. You know, we always
struggled at Alice Park. And I much mother go to
Loft's Verse Field. I'm much rather go to King's Park.
I didn't want to go to Alice Park. And that's
(12:26):
what that's what they're all saying. We love going to
Eden Park. They don't love going to Eden Park because
that's how that's our ground, that's our home, that's where
we're successful. And the All Blacks will go there very comfortable.
They know where they sit in the changing room, they
know every inch of the grass, they know that the
(12:46):
atmosphere will be very much pro the All Blacks, so
you know they've got to embrace that and enjoy it all.
Speaker 4 (12:55):
You played there a lot the first five of the
fifty tests you were involved in from from ninety four onwards,
but of course also played in that game against France
in ninety four and we've and if he replays of
that this week, as well, the try from the end
of the Earth. What are you most vivid memories of
that day?
Speaker 8 (13:14):
We well, we went back to the wall.
Speaker 7 (13:16):
We you know, we lost in christ it against the
French and Saint Andre and he's an old old maid
of mine and he reminds me of that regularly, that
they were the last team to win it.
Speaker 8 (13:27):
Even park.
Speaker 7 (13:29):
But yeah, we just say, I just you know, I remember,
you know, the ball going into that right hand corner.
I'm hoping it's going to go out. And then they
just do what they do. They try from the.
Speaker 8 (13:40):
End of the world. I think they called it.
Speaker 7 (13:42):
And you know, Saint Andrew and his men they developed
something as we all know, they can you know, the
blankers of the world. You know that that great team
of the late seventies, early eighties, they if they believe
they can do it, they do it.
Speaker 8 (13:59):
And you know, you know, that's what.
Speaker 7 (14:01):
We probably need more in rugby is moments like that
that light light up the game.
Speaker 4 (14:08):
Sure, and you played in some outstanding all black sides.
I think of that team of the late eighties, that
that went three calendar years without losing a game eighty
seven through eighty nine and into nineteen ninety as well,
and then the team that went to the Rugby World
Cup in ninety five, ninety six and ninety seven incredible years.
What were the hallmarks of those those great All Black
(14:28):
sides that you were a part of.
Speaker 7 (14:31):
When we're individual that team from eighty seven to ninety
was as a group of individuals who were very good
at what they did, and we were perfectionists.
Speaker 8 (14:45):
It was one hundred percent wanted to be the best
we could be. And if you get everyone.
Speaker 7 (14:51):
Doing that, you were unbeatable. And that's so that team there,
you know, ninety two to ninety four, Jason was that
that was a pretty tough time.
Speaker 8 (15:03):
We had to go through a major learning curve.
Speaker 7 (15:05):
And I sort of see, sort of see you know,
I said to Scott Barrett last year, You're going to
get better and better every year, but.
Speaker 8 (15:12):
You're you're going to have to take some pain along
the way.
Speaker 7 (15:15):
And and and that's what I see in today's game
this evening, is that the big boys need to stand
up because we've got a lot of.
Speaker 8 (15:23):
There's a lot of new newbies.
Speaker 7 (15:27):
That haven't been in this environment before, haven't been put
at this you know, standing at this door. Do I
open it? And go through or not. And that's why
we need the big boys. You know, Ardie's playing this
hundredth game tonight. There's a few other that's bear out there.
There's a there's a few others that are that are.
Speaker 8 (15:45):
The big boys, and they need to stand up tonight.
Speaker 10 (15:49):
To deliver.
Speaker 8 (15:50):
And and that's what I sort of think about it.
Speaker 7 (15:51):
You know, the early in ninety two ninety three of
Foxy played badly, if I JK plaid badly, if I
played badly, we would lose. And when that's why, and
it's always so fine and Karma and those boys Lowi
and Olo, we need to front and if we can
(16:12):
do it, then everyone will just becomes an easy job.
But you're playing against the world champions and they know
how to put the pressure on. So, you know, I
love the look of this all black team. We've got
some real depth off the bench. To have Limax and
Williams sitting on the bench there, I just think that
is fantastic. And then probably for me, the find of
(16:35):
this year it has been Faber in Holland to have
him coming off the bench. To have my dream player
of last year, Satiti, you know, playing at number eight
already playing.
Speaker 8 (16:45):
A one hundreds.
Speaker 7 (16:46):
Yeah, we've had a really really good team, so you know,
just embrace it.
Speaker 8 (16:51):
And we're playing the World champions at home.
Speaker 4 (16:54):
Is this game going to be as tight as everybody
thinks it will be. There's been the odd blowout between
these two sides, the fifty seven nil at Albany twenty seventeen.
Speaker 3 (17:03):
The game before the World.
Speaker 4 (17:04):
Cup in twenty twenty three at two was a bit
of a blowout in South Africa's favor. But it is
just going to be a typical all black South Africa game, tight,
I like to.
Speaker 7 (17:14):
Think, so it's you know, to have a blowout.
Speaker 8 (17:18):
I can't see that. I can't see South Africa.
Speaker 7 (17:20):
They look pretty rusty the first game against Australia, but
they came back last week.
Speaker 8 (17:27):
Or two weeks ago, so no, I can't see that.
Speaker 7 (17:31):
And I can't see the All Blacks blowing out either
at Eden Park.
Speaker 8 (17:35):
So this is going to be.
Speaker 7 (17:36):
This has been a proper test match, which which which
is why I think everyone's so excited the quality of
the players, and I think it's going to live up
to its bill.
Speaker 4 (17:46):
Yeah, I think you may well be right as you
usually are. See, thanks so much for joining us. Across news.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
We can't wait. You've passed your past team, enough team
minutes on the.
Speaker 4 (17:55):
Way to kick off for us, look forward to catch
up again sometimes. So how going, mate, enjoy you, enjoyed
to you, enjoyed to the one and only Sean Fitzpatrick
joining us with some great memories and some great thoughts
in particular on the home record and how it's not
a burden.
Speaker 3 (18:13):
It's not something that should bring with it extra pressure. Instead,
it should.
Speaker 4 (18:17):
Bring with it a feeling of supreme confidence that any
team coming to Eden Park is going to have to
do something pretty special, that they're going to come away
with a win. Keend of reach a pulse on this
game now, which is now just a few hours away.
Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty lines are open
on this I think we'll win the game straight away.
(18:38):
That's my initial thought. I think we'll win the game.
It feels to me as though there is far too
much on the line for the All Blacks tonight redemption
after the loss of the Pumas and Buenos Aires last
time out.
Speaker 3 (18:50):
Four straight defeats to the spring Box.
Speaker 4 (18:53):
That even sounds crazy saying that, doesn't it They've won
the last four matches between the two of us, the
proud Eden Park record to preserve fifty without loss, forty
eight wins and just a couple of draws, and one
of the All Blacks' most popular players reaching centurion status
tonight in Ardi Savia. It almost feels as though the
(19:16):
stars are aligning and there's a higher power at work here.
And I know that probably sounds a little bit wishy washy,
but it's how it feels. I really think the All
Blacks will win tonight, and listening to Sean Fitzpatrick there
did nothing to ulter my view. I like the team.
I'm glad we've got a couple of tweaks, but I'm
(19:37):
also glad that they've stuck with the selections and the players.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
They've placed faith in the likes of Billy Propt.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
They could easily have said, you know what, it hasn't
quite worked out of the way you wanted it to, Billy,
but we're going to give you time in that thirteen
Jersey and I really like our bench. I really like
the impact we're going to get from Summer Sauny Tokiyahu
to Mighty Williams, Fabian Holland at Tyrel Lomax Stuplas Khalifi.
(20:05):
That could be so import autant later in this game,
I think we'll win the game.
Speaker 3 (20:11):
I think we'll win it. What about you?
Speaker 4 (20:14):
I eight one hundred eighty ten eighty is our number

Speaker 12 (21:46):
We're very well, very excited to be here.
Speaker 3 (21:48):
And Tony, Hello to you. Hi, nice happy now you
were you were almost queuing up before the place.
Speaker 12 (21:54):
I think we got here at seven minutes too and
we were told no, no, it doesn't open till twelve,
so we were outside on the foot path.
Speaker 4 (22:00):
So what just keen to rather than just sort of
come to the game tonight and get the.
Speaker 12 (22:04):
Gusten to you from home to Tony, We've got to
be here, so we are.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
That's so lovely, it's lovely to have you have you
face to face now.
Speaker 3 (22:12):
You don't look nervous, Tony. Are you nervous about the
game tonight?
Speaker 13 (22:15):
Well, it was.
Speaker 14 (22:16):
A bit nerve wrecking getting ready this morning, my run
sheet of getting my All Blacks Jersey on, supporters jersey,
getting my makeup on, you know, packing my battery pack
for my phone last year, listening It's a thing I
needed every second.
Speaker 3 (22:30):
So yeah, yeah, I'm a bit nervous.
Speaker 4 (22:32):
Well, I thought the All Blacks had had some, you know,
some fairly extreme game day preparation that sounds like, sounds
like just as.
Speaker 12 (22:40):
I borrowed my husband's charging cord for the mobile phone,
he was like.
Speaker 15 (22:45):
But where are you going to find a plug.
Speaker 13 (22:46):
I'm like, we'll find a plug.
Speaker 12 (22:47):
We'll just stand beside it.
Speaker 3 (22:48):
There are actually more plugs than you think around the place.
Speaker 4 (22:51):
There's a couple over here. You can use it exactly
if you need to. This is clearly not your first rodeo. Christina,
you've been to a few Blacks teats? How long you've
been supporting the.
Speaker 12 (22:59):
Team Since the first game of the twenty eleven Rugby
World Cup. My sister moved home from Sydney. She actually
arrived in Auckland from Sydney that day. Picture up from
the airport got I think we both had the silver
fern fan flag. Went to Eden Park and fell in
love with it. Amazing to Eden Park at night time,
(23:21):
when you've got darkness, the glow of the green grass,
it's just hallowed ground. And so when we found out
you know, today's game and it had sold out, we
were like, we've got we've just got to get ourselves tickets.
Speaker 3 (23:36):
So we did. So we here so so excited. Yeah.
It is a special place, isn't it?
Speaker 4 (23:41):
And I think you know, Eden Park maybe has its detractors,
but you'll you say so when it's full, it is
unlike any other arena.
Speaker 16 (23:48):
Et ceterric.
Speaker 3 (23:49):
Yeah, and I think, I mean.
Speaker 4 (23:50):
What your hope as well, and this would be proven
with the results, Tony, is that any team who comes
here has that trepidation. No team's won here for you know, fifty.
Speaker 13 (24:00):
It's so exciting.
Speaker 3 (24:02):
Yeah, so when.
Speaker 12 (24:03):
Music starts and the All Blacks come out, that's when
your heart stops and your yeah, just so patriotic.
Speaker 3 (24:08):
How are you, Tony? Watching a game? Do you do you?
Are you nervous? Are you a nervous watcher? Or do
you watch?
Speaker 17 (24:14):
Yeah?
Speaker 14 (24:14):
No, I just like to sort of take it all
in and do a bit of crowd watching as well,
and a bit of yelling and screaming, so you know,
just the usual sort of fan fan watching.
Speaker 4 (24:25):
Awesome, Awesome and the Kingslander. I mean, it's it's a
great venue. I see, it's already filling up.
Speaker 3 (24:30):
The good thing.
Speaker 4 (24:30):
Good thing about it is that they don't seem to
be turning away South African fans, which is good.
Speaker 3 (24:35):
At it as the atmosphere.
Speaker 12 (24:38):
We were waiting outside on the footpath to come in,
we actually had quite a decent chat to a large
group of South African fans and it was just fun.
Speaker 3 (24:46):
You know.
Speaker 12 (24:46):
Yeah, it's just the just a really really good time.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
I think. I think you're right.
Speaker 4 (24:51):
The bench is all a part of it is, you know,
the game, women on the game itself. We can analyze
that until the cows come home.
Speaker 3 (24:57):
But yeah, zoom out from that, and it's everything that's
wrapped around it, right, yeap, exactly.
Speaker 12 (25:00):
Yeah, So and I think everywhere all as nervous as
each other. I think you're right in think one guy
I spoke to it already chewed to s fingernails.
Speaker 14 (25:08):
Off, so you teeter s fingernails. And the other South
African fan was like, I don't want it to be
a drawer, you know, whatever the result, I don't want.
Speaker 12 (25:16):
To know draw anything, but I don't know if we
can say.
Speaker 18 (25:18):
That on radio when he said no, we can't know, get.
Speaker 3 (25:23):
I think we get the gest Yeah, I almost.
Speaker 4 (25:25):
I'm almost certain I know what he said without you
having to say it. I do know though, that you
have You've got a bottle of bubbles, and they're always
that's for celebrations, right, So totally.
Speaker 12 (25:36):
Yeah, we're making a day of it.
Speaker 3 (25:37):
Yeah's so cool. Well, guys, thanks for coming down, Thanks
for thanks for joining.
Speaker 12 (25:41):
Us on the air, Thanks for being here.
Speaker 3 (25:43):
No, it's great to look. I mean, it's like, I
can't believe they let me do it.
Speaker 4 (25:47):
If I'm honest, I can't believe let me come out
and sit in the pub and talk rugby with passionate
fans like you guys, and for.
Speaker 12 (25:54):
Us to be able to see the guests that you've
got coming through the afternoon, that's the dream for us.
Thank you so much.
Speaker 11 (25:59):
Money.
Speaker 3 (26:00):
Awesome you guys.
Speaker 4 (26:00):
All right, we'll see we'll keep an eye on you
from over here, and you can keep an eye on
us from over Awesome to see you vote.
Speaker 3 (26:07):
Oh, eight hundred and eighty ten eighty.
Speaker 4 (26:08):
If you would like to join the conversation on the phone,
we've got a couple of spare lines to talk this game.
The draw was mentioned there, and I had this conversation
in the office yesterday. Would you, if it was offered
to you right now, take the drawer? Would you take it?
And I can give you a more concrete and yet
(26:30):
I think still hypothetical, Well, certainly still hypothetical question put
forward to me yesterday by New Zealand Herald sports editor
Winston Aldworth. He said, Okay, here's the situation where twelve
nine down time is up, the all Blacks are given
a penalty in kickable range. Would you be happy with
(26:53):
them kicking the points and taking the draw or would
you instead be urging them to kick for the corner,
set up the line out and attempt to score a
try to win it. It's a hypothetical situation, but I
think it's an interesting question and probably an insight into
how we're all feeling about the strength of the spring
(27:15):
box and this unbeaten record at Eden Park.
Speaker 3 (27:20):
Would you be happy with a drawer tonight? Oh, eight
hundred and.
Speaker 4 (27:25):
Eighty ten eight. He got a huge number of text
here I want to get to but let's get to
the lines.
Speaker 3 (27:29):
Ian, Hello mate, hello twenty here you are mate.
Speaker 4 (27:33):
I'm doing well an well, I'm parked up in a
pub not far from Eden Park, so mate, it doesn't
get better than this.
Speaker 19 (27:40):
Well, I'm from Hawk's Bay, so first up, we're going
to belt your boys from Wellington today.
Speaker 3 (27:45):
Anyway, I think you might be right.
Speaker 4 (27:46):
Actually I don't have a I don't have a defense
to that argument.
Speaker 19 (27:50):
I thought i'd just get head and first good on you.
I thought tonight's game, as you've been alluding to, it's
going to be a you know, a real snorter. I'm
not as confident of an or Black win as you
might be at the prison point in time, even though
(28:11):
the stars may be aligning as you say. But I
think it's going to be a very very close mention.
If I don't know what the winner's like in Auckland, well.
Speaker 4 (28:23):
I can tell you it's it's yeah, it's actually at
the moment it's it's raining lightly. But I've checked the
forecast just uh for just a preparation for you asking
the question. Actually, and it's meant to clear, it's meant
to clear later. I think it'll be dry tonight, it'll
be overcast, it won't look at there may be the
odd shower or two, but I don't think conditions will
(28:44):
affect the game. And like you, Ian, I'm expecting quite
a tight game. So really, I'm pretty sure we're not
going to see a tri fest and with a whole
heap of running rugby. But I do hope to see
some game breaking moments from the outside backs on both sides.
Speaker 20 (28:58):
Really.
Speaker 19 (28:59):
Oh absolutely, I agree with that, and I believe that
the score will be under twenty.
Speaker 10 (29:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (29:06):
Last World Cup Final although were Bogars at twelve eleven,
thirteen twelve something like that. The exact scores catch me
and it was a one pointer. Well remember the World
Cup Final in twenty eleven eighty seven?
Speaker 3 (29:15):
I can tell you as well.
Speaker 4 (29:16):
And there's a number of South African fans making their
way into the Kingslander and they've got their.
Speaker 3 (29:21):
Chests puffed out.
Speaker 4 (29:23):
They look very confident, hands on, hits replica jerseys on,
looking like they are sensing victory at Eden part.
Speaker 3 (29:31):
These blokes, I can tell you they really are.
Speaker 18 (29:34):
Ian.
Speaker 3 (29:34):
Great to hear from you, mate, enjoy the game.
Speaker 4 (29:36):
Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty is our number,
Brian Hollo Matehi good eight?
Speaker 21 (29:42):
How are you going?
Speaker 22 (29:42):
David?
Speaker 3 (29:43):
Good? Thank you?
Speaker 21 (29:43):
Brian Hey, this is just a little bit on my
behalf and few other people commentating on the TV with
Justin and others. They often, and they've said, spend every
time as they breakdown or something, what happens the referees
having a act telling him what's going on, Who's going
to get that Carlo yellow card and what? And then
these guys are talking talking, talking about a move that
(30:04):
happened five minutes ago.
Speaker 22 (30:05):
Which we all saw.
Speaker 19 (30:06):
Anyway, is there.
Speaker 21 (30:06):
Any way we could ask them very nicely if that
when the refers say it, having a word to the
players and tell them what's happened at set the setter?
Did they just zip it for a while?
Speaker 4 (30:18):
Yeah, I mean it's probably more of a question for
the Sky team, Brian, if I'm honest. But look, I
I know that they are regularly assessed, critiqued, if you like,
by their bosses, so I'm sure that would be taken
on board.
Speaker 3 (30:33):
Yeah, I like you.
Speaker 4 (30:33):
I think it's important sometimes to hear that content, isn't
it to know what the referee is saying. That's why
the referee is miked up. We've got that on our
radio commentary as well. I know Elliot Smith is very
good at that at making sure that that we all
that we all.
Speaker 3 (30:47):
Hear what the referee has to say. I appreciate you call, Brian.
I enjoy the game.
Speaker 4 (30:51):
Hello, Dave, you've you think the Wayne Smith factor might
be a factor tonight.
Speaker 23 (30:58):
Yes, yes, he's been in camp with the All Backs
all week and he's the All Black coach called him
in then is a purvole back then the All Blacks.
He would have showed them what what to do against
the spring Box. And he's he's a genius. He can
he can put the how how do the All Blacks
to catch the ball and they won't give away the
(31:19):
penalties of the breakdown. And he's such a genius you
can't undme estimate him.
Speaker 6 (31:24):
You know.
Speaker 23 (31:25):
It's a Wayne Smith, you know. But it's good God
on the All Black coach will bring him in because
he knows Eden back the back of the hand. The
All Blacks do too. And it's a portress. You're not
going to give it away to the spring Box. You're
not going to your life and your place to depend
on it. You're not not going to hand it over
to the springboat without a fight.
Speaker 3 (31:45):
Yeah, I think that's what they'll do.
Speaker 4 (31:47):
The thing that's what they'll probably do is is and
I know that that sports teams do this a lot.
They almost ask the players to imagine that somebody is
invading their house, that it's a home invasion. You're coming
into our place where you're going to defend this, where
you're going to defend.
Speaker 3 (32:04):
This with our lives.
Speaker 4 (32:05):
And that's probably be drawing too long, Abo, but we
are going to do everything possible to make sure that
our visitors leave empty handed.
Speaker 18 (32:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 22 (32:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 23 (32:15):
And our col to Antimouth, he really he knowed what
the sing boxer up doing. He's a clever man read
clever coat to me.
Speaker 4 (32:23):
It's a good point, you mate, Dave. Maybe it's our
secret weapon tonight. Maybe it's our superpower when the South
Africans come knocking on that door. The Wayne Smith factor
might well be a big factor. Thanks for your call, Dave.
Enjoyed the game, Cherry. You've got an eden Park memory
for us.
Speaker 24 (32:41):
I certainly have, and there's probably not many people that
can share this. When I was at university in the
second half of the sixties, it was very fashionable to
go down to eat, can't take your sleeping bag and
sleep in the queue, So we were out there the
night before left in the queue. I think he remember
(33:04):
a lot of guitars, was a very cheap white. We
were excellently horrified because one of my flatmates at eight
o'clock the daylight cake in code. She didn't wait for
the game. I had to admit, but I've got no
(33:25):
idea who was playing, what the score was. That The
whole point was you went out and slept on the cue.
Speaker 25 (33:34):
I assured it.
Speaker 24 (33:35):
Was very cold, and if only we had the facilities
that you've got something a quiet drink and placial surrounding. Yes,
So I'd be interested to see if for many other
people who even still alive, who ever did to this?
Speaker 3 (33:55):
Oh, Jerry, that's a great memory. I love that.
Speaker 4 (33:57):
And as you say, you know, the score and the
teams and that sort of thing have long.
Speaker 3 (34:03):
Since faded from your memory.
Speaker 4 (34:04):
But a razor sharp memory of sleeping outside the ground
in order to get the.
Speaker 3 (34:08):
Best seats the next day, I absolutely love that.
Speaker 4 (34:10):
I know a lot of people used to do that
with tickets as well, when tickets for certain things went on.
Speaker 3 (34:15):
Sale, they would sleep outside.
Speaker 4 (34:17):
It seems to have all gone west that sort of
thing now because we can all do it online. Can't
we think we're the poorer for it to miss out
on those experiences of sleeping rough. Just to make sure
you get the best tickets, Cherry, thanks for your call,
really appreciate it. Sixteen away from one Stewart Please hold mate,
want to hear your thoughts on whether you'd take the
draw or not. There's a spear line there. Oh, eight
(34:39):
hundred and eighty ten eighty Weekend Sport coming to your
live from the Kingsland of this afternoon.
Speaker 26 (34:45):
I'm counting down to all Blacks v. South Africa on
your home of Sport.
Speaker 1 (34:50):
It's Weekend Sport Live from the Kingslander in Auckland with
Jason Vine and GJ. Gardner Holmes, New Zealand's most trusted
home builder, News Talk Senvy.
Speaker 4 (35:00):
Coming up twelve away from one. As we come to
your life from the Kingsland of this afternoon. You know
it's a special game of when fans travel from thousands
and thousands of miles.
Speaker 3 (35:10):
Away to see it.
Speaker 4 (35:11):
We've got a couple here, Loderic and Reuben. Great to
see you guys, Thanks for stopping in.
Speaker 6 (35:16):
Thank you very much.
Speaker 3 (35:16):
Yeah, now tell us where you've come from. Loderick. First
of all, you mate, how far have you had to
travel to get here?
Speaker 6 (35:20):
So I've come from Duai.
Speaker 13 (35:22):
I'm originally from Cape Town and we had the opportunity
to join a South African tour group. So my dad
and my brother have joined us from Cape Town and
we we oh, we came out to Edinbark. Like I said,
it is the holy grail of Rabbi Taus. The All
Blacks spring box rivalry is absolutely insane at South Africans.
(35:43):
It's always when we play the All Blacks. It's the
opportunity for our spring box to be euros and the
one team in the world where we play our best
and we could still lose, so worth of miles definitely
where the travel really really looking forward to experiencing hied
and Park.
Speaker 4 (36:00):
Actually you've crystallized it really well there and I think
a lot of our fans could learn from that.
Speaker 3 (36:04):
We could play our best and still lose to you guys. Well, Ruben,
you've come from Cape Town as well.
Speaker 27 (36:08):
Yes, yeah, me and my dad traveled from Camptown. We're
still struggling with a lot of jet lags.
Speaker 3 (36:12):
So you're looking bright and shiny.
Speaker 27 (36:14):
Yeah, that's that's the couple of beers is one of
the Yeah, no, but yeah, it's going to be extremely
special for me. It's actually my my brother and my
dad have watched two All Blacks games in their Bosscreer
or rugby watching career. This will be my first time
watching the box play the All Backs, so yeah, it's
gonna be very special for me. I'm very excited to
see the howker We did the All Blacks Experience museum yesterday,
(36:35):
so yeah, we're trying to get in soaking as much
Augtland as we can.
Speaker 20 (36:39):
Yeah, very excited.
Speaker 10 (36:40):
Man.
Speaker 3 (36:41):
That All Blacks Experience is great, isn't it?
Speaker 4 (36:42):
And you would have seen the wall as you come
in of all the All Blacks matches with the with
the studs in there, and you would have looked for
the green ones on.
Speaker 3 (36:48):
Your nine.
Speaker 28 (36:52):
Thirty nine I think last four as well, the last four,
but you go down so well next ninety ninety five
Rugby World Cup, and then then we obviously loved ninety
six when we won a series for the first time.
Speaker 4 (37:02):
Yeah, I mean you're clearly passionate rugby fans. How confident
do you feel that that your team tonight can break
that Eaton.
Speaker 3 (37:09):
Park, that In Park run of fifty matches without defeat.
Speaker 13 (37:12):
Yeah, well, I mean I think that's that's part impossible.
Why we came on this two because we thought, you know,
as tours and Springbok tours to New Zealand, it doesn't
always go well. So we felt as South African fans,
this is probably the chance. So out of you know, probability,
it's probably our best chance albe that though, I think
between twenty and thirty percent, And that's not me being
(37:33):
only that.
Speaker 6 (37:34):
Much, that's me being realistic.
Speaker 4 (37:35):
So I think it's a coin flip. I honestly think
it's fifty fifty.
Speaker 6 (37:38):
Yeah, I do think so.
Speaker 13 (37:39):
But but well, I just I think it comes from
the respect that we have with all bracts and a
better fear in some in cases it's it's they it's
their fortress, it's their home ground, backs against the wall
for them, So we understand what that feels like. And
I just think it'll be greatly be tough. We are, yeah,
because we hope and we we think it is probably
(38:01):
our best chance. I still beg it at like thirty percent,
but I mean, if if it does come up, we'll
be at Kingsland until three.
Speaker 4 (38:09):
As we left to drag you Ruben, you get a chance.
Are you going to stay on for the Wellington Teeth
next week?
Speaker 27 (38:15):
Yes, we are staying on for the Weddington Test. So yeah,
we're going with a We're going to a lovely group
of South African fans. They called the Bryan on me,
so shout out to the Brian on me. Yeah, we're
traveling after the after Auckland, were going to Rota Rua,
then Lake Topu.
Speaker 6 (38:28):
I hope I'm.
Speaker 3 (38:28):
Pronounced you are great?
Speaker 27 (38:30):
Yeah, and then yeah we're doing the Wellington Test. So yeah,
I think I's given you a ballpark figure on the probability.
I think next weekend we've got a better chance. Uh yeah,
injuries having come at a great time for us. I
know All Black's missing two key strumofs. But yeah, if
you'd asked me end of last year season, if we
(38:51):
were playing Eden Park against All Blacks, I said, I
would have liked our chances today. A couple of things
are gonna have to go away, I feel, but I
like our chances next week and Wellington some some key
guys will probably be back and it's a place where
we've had more success than we'll be playing today.
Speaker 3 (39:07):
But you never know.
Speaker 27 (39:08):
Man rugby bull bouncers different ways.
Speaker 3 (39:10):
If you don't, it really does.
Speaker 4 (39:11):
And I think I think most all Blacks fans would say,
we think this series might be split one all as well.
Speaker 27 (39:16):
Yeah, and I guess that'll be a great result for us.
Speaker 4 (39:20):
For us, Actually we've lost the last four all right,
so I haven't got much time left.
Speaker 3 (39:25):
But so what does the rest of the day look
like for you, Roderick. You'll get a you'll get a
you'll fortify yourself for the It's all a very fun,
not very long walk to eat and parkas.
Speaker 13 (39:33):
Yeah, so we we we actually just reviewed with which
are the best places we've stopped over here the Kingstander
and we've we've got one will stop and then at
four o'clock we the tour group is coming together and
we've got actually Donnie Hadburn from the nineteen eighty one
from the ninety eighty one tour group and and legendary
spring Balk he's touring with us, so he is giving
(39:53):
a bit of a talk there and a bunch of
South Africans to come there and then they, in typical
South African fashion, with six years in, we'll go in
as a collective. We'll go in as a collective and
united into the stadium and sit together and experienced Edend
Park and you know all let's glory.
Speaker 3 (40:10):
Guys.
Speaker 4 (40:10):
It's just so wonderful to have you here. Thanks for
stopping it. I mean, your passion is infectious. And look,
I wish you all the best as I know you
do us and made the best team wins tonight.
Speaker 3 (40:20):
Thanks, thank you, go Lord Rick.
Speaker 4 (40:23):
And there over a couple of passionates out African fans
joining us here at the Kingslander.
Speaker 3 (40:27):

Speaker 4 (40:45):
Bobby skin stand our guest after one o'clock on text Mate.
Speaker 3 (40:48):
You don't take a draw with three in front with
time up.
Speaker 4 (40:51):
You play this like a World Cup final for the
win and play the brand of rugby New Zealand's known
for from the foundations.
Speaker 3 (40:58):
The rugby gods are on our side. Well, I certainly
hope you're right.
Speaker 4 (41:01):
I certainly hope You're right in that regard and Pine,
I was there for the whole six to two with
hundreds of other young kiwis on Oe still stands out
as the greatest trip of my life. Amazing times really
feels like yesterday. It is still so vivid, says Toddy
Good on your Toddy Bobby's Content.
Speaker 3 (41:19):
After one, we're live at the Kingslander.
Speaker 2 (41:23):
Bringing you the build up, the land.
Speaker 29 (41:26):

As we count down to the biggest Test match of
the year, It's Weekend Sport with Jason Dye live from
the Kingslander.
Speaker 2 (41:43):
In Auckland on your home of sports News, Dogs.
Speaker 4 (41:46):
N B, ES and d Welcome into the show, Welcome
back to the show, as the case may be. Seven
and a half past one on Jason Pine. This is
Weekend Sport on the day of a massive Test match
at Eaton Park, coming to your life from the Kingslander
on New North Road. As we build towards kickoff at
five past seven, we're hits all three and our test
built up tonight starts at six Elliott's and Steve Gordon
(42:07):
with the call from just after seven, and they are
starting to really flow in now to the Kingslander on
New North Road and spring.
Speaker 3 (42:15):
Box gear and All Blacks gear.
Speaker 4 (42:18):
And gear of indeterminate origin some of them. But everybody
just has a sense of something special about to happen
at Eden Park not far from here. A bit later
on tonight, we're going to open the lines again. They're
open all afternoon to chat to you about your levels
of optimism, regardless of pioters that you follow, and where
(42:40):
you think this game might be won or lost.
Speaker 3 (42:42):
Had a couple of texts.
Speaker 4 (42:45):
On whether you would take the drawer tonight if you
were offered the drawer as an All Blacks.
Speaker 3 (42:49):
Fan, would you take it? Text here? Yeah, take the
drawer at.
Speaker 4 (42:52):
Least how the then the unbeaten record stays alive at
Eden Park.
Speaker 3 (42:57):
I just think it's un All Blacks like, isn't it?
You know?
Speaker 4 (42:59):
If we're twelve nine down penalty in the last minute kickable,
knowing that that's the last action of the game, do
you take it? Do you take the three points? Do
you settle for the drawer? Or is this the All
Blacks and we don't settle? We kicked to the corner,
try and get the try, win the game.
Speaker 3 (43:18):
Your thoughts are welcome.
Speaker 4 (43:21):
As we build towards kickoff, Let's bring in South African Rugby.
Speaker 30 (43:25):
Royalty skin stud strowing him off hands off gold so
for the third time now, so i'll after you could
come up the skin stuts skin Scot drew up, held
Buddy and Bobby's skin start with a Greig dive.
Speaker 2 (43:43):
Believe me, he has enjoyed that.
Speaker 4 (43:46):
Bobby skinstad forty two test matches for the spring Box,
twelve of those as captain, scoring eleven tries. He attended
three World Cups. He's in New Zealand for this one
and he joins us on the phone. Bob great to
get the chance to chat. How much would it mean
for South Africa to be the first side to beat
the All Blacks at Eden Park since nineteen ninety.
Speaker 20 (44:06):
Fi Oh mate, it would it would mean everything.
Speaker 31 (44:10):
I mean, I think it's a It's a fantastic goal
for the players. It's proven to be so difficult that
that you know, nobody's been able to do it for
that long. But you know, tonight is one of those
one of those matches that I think that they'll they'll
hang their hats on the fact that you know, they've
they've got an outside chance and and they'll give everything.
Speaker 20 (44:26):
I think it's a it's a fantastic opportunity.
Speaker 3 (44:29):
Do you think it's just an outside chance, Bob? Or
is this is this a coin flip?
Speaker 4 (44:32):
I feel as though there's very little between these two teams.
Speaker 31 (44:37):
Yeah, I think there is very little between these the
two teams. I think you're right, you know, But but
it's going to come down to who turns up this evening.
You know, on the on the sort of on the
balance of probability. You know that the Abs have have
been more successful here at home and and therefore, you know,
have a.
Speaker 20 (44:56):
Fortress that they can defend, et cetera.
Speaker 31 (44:58):
But then the spring Box have done some some amazing things,
some crazy, crazy and brave things over the last sort
of six year periods near period, and they've achieved all
over the world. So I'm I'm confident that they'll give
it a real red hot go and and I think
they'll be they'll be in this game.
Speaker 20 (45:14):
But it's still a very difficult thing to do.
Speaker 2 (45:17):
You know.
Speaker 20 (45:17):
I can't. I can't. I can't get out of that
that part of it. I can't get out of my mind.
Speaker 3 (45:21):
We all know the South African rugby d NA, the
physicality in the and the you know, just the the
big men running into battle. You know, time after time
we know what South African rugby looks like. Is that
what you expect tonight that they will play that way?
South Africa?
Speaker 20 (45:39):
Yeah, I think they'll be very physical.
Speaker 31 (45:41):
I think, you know, I've got to say just looking
at the at the teams that the Abs have got
a very physical bench coming on as well. You know,
they've got a physical bench, physical pack starting and then
a physical bench coming on as well. So so you know,
maybe they've they've taken a leaf out of Russy's book
and said we'll do our own little bomb squad version
(46:03):
of But I think South Africa have got some nice
physicality t I think they might look at the stats
in in in in this game and at Eden Park
and they might say, look, you know, to be in
this we need to play a lot of rugby in
New Zealand's territory. So we need to we need to
keep them there because we don't want them attacking, you know,
(46:24):
us relentlessly when making mistakes in our own half. So
I think we we'll probably see quite a mature game
from the spring box. I would I would imagine, And
then you know that they've got some big men who
stand up in the big games, and and you know,
I'm thinking of the Damian Delendi's and Chess and Colby's
and Andre Pollard's, you know, I mean, these are guys
who've who've done it wherever they've needed.
Speaker 20 (46:44):
To, all over the world. So it's a it's a
great opportunity for them to shine.
Speaker 4 (46:48):
As has see Calisi of course, and we didn't know
whether he was coming, let alone be available to play.
Speaker 3 (46:54):
He's here, He's starting at number eight tonight. How big
a boost is that.
Speaker 20 (46:58):
I think it's a great boost.
Speaker 31 (46:59):
I mean, here is probably one of the most effective
loose forwards we've seen in the In the game, you know,
he's up against a very good car to that in
addis severe and and you know the whole loose forward
trio from from New.
Speaker 20 (47:14):
Zealand are good.
Speaker 31 (47:14):
But you know where where Sears Sears got a fantastic advantage.
Speaker 20 (47:18):
He's a he's a very giving player.
Speaker 31 (47:22):
You know, he does a lot of assist tackles, he
does a lot of assist carries, he does a lot
of snaffling on the ball, looking after the rock area.
He's a very he's a very clean sort of proponent
if he will, of the breakdown area, and that's going
to be super important tonight.
Speaker 20 (47:38):
So I'm delighted he's back.
Speaker 31 (47:39):
I've heard a little story on the side that he said, listen,
he wants to concentrate on his game. He wants to
put in the effort, so the burden of captain c
he doesn't want to change any of that, and just
an amazing sort of show of servant leadership. He just
wants to get in and do his job. And that's
that's just amazing, and it really is, you know, indicative
of the measure of the man.
Speaker 4 (47:59):
Indeed, so the captain's armband goes to Jesse Kleel. We
all know his quality. What kind of leader will he be?
Speaker 20 (48:05):
Though? I think he's.
Speaker 31 (48:08):
You know, he leads with integrity, he does the hard work,
he doesn't shy away from anything. I mean, you've seen
how he's built and how you can deliver on the field.
I think Jesse will rarely concentrate on making sure that
the big decisions are made well, so you know, tactically,
where are we playing this game?
Speaker 20 (48:25):
Tactically?
Speaker 31 (48:25):
We've seen the spring Box have got an outside end defense,
a rush defense of every Chao tech defense that doesn't
work when you're on your own twenty two, but it
does work when you're in the oppositions twenty two. So
I think they'll want to try and play the rugby there,
and Jesse knows he's as the leader, he's got.
Speaker 20 (48:39):
To try and keep the team in that red zone
and in that territory.
Speaker 4 (48:42):
Bob, as someone who's played a lot of big rugby matches,
what is the best strategy for not letting the game
and the occasion get the better of you?
Speaker 31 (48:52):
I think, I mean, what a great question, because you know,
everybody's got their own different routines, different background, different experiences,
et cetera.
Speaker 20 (49:01):
I think you'll see.
Speaker 31 (49:02):
The one thing I do love about the Springbok team
is that they're so deeply passionate about but what they
mean to the country and what they mean to people
back home, that they'll take it so seriously that they'll
make sure they prepared in all the right ways.
Speaker 20 (49:15):
And that's going to be different things for different people.
Speaker 31 (49:17):
You know, I often go in early in the test
matches and you watch the different pockets of guys preparing.
Some guys are off stretching very early. Some guys are
just taking in the stadium, you know, the sort of
emotional cues and markers from the fans and the people
out there. And then some people are giving the old
silent treatment and just walking around in their own thoughts.
(49:39):
So I think they'll all find that their best way
to prepare and then bring a great physical and emotional
charge to the battle tonight.
Speaker 4 (49:50):
All right, to finish, then, what type of test are
you expecting? Are you looking at a is it a
twelve eleven again that sort of thing. I don't think
this is a blowout. Is it a type test match
decided on moments?
Speaker 20 (50:03):
I think it's going to be decided on moments. Yeah,
you're right.
Speaker 31 (50:05):
I mean, I'm hoping that we don't see too much
TMO and outside in influence. I'm hoping we see two
teams that play with fifteen men, you know, for for
the whole contest, and it's just a chance to see
them test themselves physically, which which will will probably mean
that the measure of this will be a very tight
(50:26):
you know, who's the first person to.
Speaker 20 (50:29):
Make a mistake? Top thing?
Speaker 31 (50:30):
And that's a pressure cooker environment, so it should be
a fantastic match.
Speaker 4 (50:35):
I'm always love welcoming you to New Zealand and having
you on the radio with this pop.
Speaker 3 (50:38):
Thanks so much, man. Enjoy the game tonight, Thank you
very much.
Speaker 31 (50:41):
I'm looking forward to it and I can I just
say that the sentiment and the people of New Zealand
have been wonderful hosts and deeply grateful to everybody who's
who's made us so welcome in your country. Thanks Funny,
Great to chat.
Speaker 4 (50:51):
Now, great to chat to you too, Bob, the Great
Bob Skinstead joining us ahead of an epic test match
tonight one sixteen.
Speaker 3 (50:57):
As we come to you from an.
Speaker 4 (50:59):
Increasingly noisy Kingsland on New North Road in Kingsland, a
decent pump from Eden Park. South African supporters, all black
supporters are gathering and getting themselves ready and all sorts
of different fashion. Dan Hooton is with us from the now.
Is it the Briye Army? Is that what I call you?
Speaker 11 (51:18):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (51:19):
The bry Army.
Speaker 32 (51:20):
We've got a group of about eighty of us. We're
not yeah ato, yeah, coming from all over the world.
So Guysim Dubai from South Africa of the UK from
the States, quite a few people from the States and
quite a few Americans actually, so they're turning.
Speaker 6 (51:37):
Against you guys.
Speaker 32 (51:38):
Well, they're starting to support South Africa now as a
post in New Zealand. So I think the All Blacks
have got to do some marketing over there.
Speaker 6 (51:46):
Us. You're you're going to be really in I think I.
Speaker 3 (51:49):
Think you might be right. We need to we need
to stretch out works more.
Speaker 4 (51:51):
We are going there to Chicago to play Ireland later
in the year, so maybe that's the time for us
to do a little bit of a little bit of marketing.
So what I mean logistically pulling together eighty people for
a presumably you here for both test managers and in
between as well.
Speaker 6 (52:06):
That's right. Yeah.
Speaker 32 (52:07):
So we started back in about twenty seventeen when we're
pretty obviously very start up, pretty.
Speaker 6 (52:13):
Small, and we've grown since then.
Speaker 32 (52:16):
We've got like a travel site to our business, so
it's all like the leaguilly covered. You know, people are
protected and you know, we've grown from humble beginnings. We
had a huge World Cup as you can, you know,
imagine like there's a lot of South African fans over
in France and now we've got this amazing reach where
you know, we reach out people really enjoyed themselves. A
lot of people come time and time again.
Speaker 6 (52:38):
We went to.
Speaker 32 (52:39):
Argentina a couple of years ago and a lot of
those people that come to New Zealand with.
Speaker 6 (52:41):
Us as well. So yeah, it's yeah, it's great. We've
got this amazing social media reach.
Speaker 32 (52:47):
You know, I don't know if there must be some
South African fans out there listening right now, come and
join us in Wellington. We're going to be doing an
event on Thursday. We've got the great donnich Hever who's
going to be joining us. So Springbok legend. I think
he's only been back to New Zealand once since the
eight one tour, the infamous Rebel tour, So this is
(53:11):
he's been a big draw card and there's a lot
of South Africans that you know, he's like, he's got
godlike status as such to go. I'm sure like other
people I diper Bar, do you think he's the greatest
spring Book ever?
Speaker 6 (53:21):
So that's pretty amazing having someone like that come along
as well.
Speaker 3 (53:25):
For us, we think the All Blacks are the spring
Box biggest rivals. Do you think that.
Speaker 32 (53:31):
Percent yeah, dating back well, I mean, like, okay, so
Readmission I suppose, I mean I wasn't really around. I
was probably about three years old when the Rebel Tursok based.
But uh, certainly since Readmission, I think they had to
really rebuild that rivalry as well, because kind of the
Wallabies that stuck their nose in there, the Betters Load
(53:51):
Cup and all that, which is still competitive, but that
had come like the big one for the All Blacks.
But now that rivalry is back, and certainly for the
spring Box. Yeah, the All Blacks are the guys that
you always want to bet that they who you're aiming for.
And yeah, it's great, I mean like you get goosebumps
watching out. Watched several All Blacks tests, luckily the more
recent ones of being in the spring Box favor. I've
(54:14):
also seen some.
Speaker 6 (54:14):
Embarrassing well not embarrassing, but defeats.
Speaker 32 (54:18):
Going the other way. So yeah, it's lacquer as they say.
The way we're going right now, we're four wins on
the trot. We're hoping to make it five today.
Speaker 3 (54:27):
Absolutely, and we're hoping to stop that.
Speaker 4 (54:30):
You obviously had the tour all ready to go before
the Australian part of the Rugby Championship. Where was your
enthusiasm for the spring Box dampened it all by what
happened at Last Park?
Speaker 6 (54:40):
Uh yeah, well not really dampened.
Speaker 32 (54:44):
I think the spring Box always performed better when their
backs tore against the wall I think, like if they're
always favorites the whole time, I wouldn't say they become complacent,
but they become complacent to a degree, and they made
a couple of stilly errors trying to you know, offload
in the tackle and throwing his hail Mary passes against Australia.
Speaker 6 (55:04):
Australia with full value for their window.
Speaker 32 (55:05):
They did to win that game, but I think the
spring Box also kind of like put a couple of
nails in their own coffin there. But sports, you can't
win them all. And they came back in Cape Town.
Still not a great performance, but they're still won. And
now against a wounded All Blacks team. Yeah, we certainly
in Argentina, you guys had a good game and then
(55:26):
a bad game.
Speaker 18 (55:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (55:27):
Well, I think we're both kind of like in the
same same era as such, like.
Speaker 32 (55:31):
We've gotta we gotta get act together or else, you know,
the Wallabies all of the Pumas are just as much
in contention for the Rugby Championship as as.
Speaker 4 (55:39):
Two of Yeah, there's thing stand all had one one
and one lost, an't we so you know it's it's
pretty even or right just to finish.
Speaker 3 (55:45):
Then do you expect this to be a typical all
blacks out there? For get teas match tight decided on moments.
Speaker 22 (55:51):
We're not.
Speaker 3 (55:52):
We're not looking at a blow eight there are we?
Speaker 33 (55:54):
Well?
Speaker 32 (55:55):
The weird thing is that like Russy has come for
a five three splits on the bench and I'm not
too sure if that's a good idea because that's the
Springboks playing to their strengths would be a six two split.
He's bought an Ethan Hook who's only played one game
for the spring Box and to throw them in to
Eden park You know, with all due respect Ethan, I
hope you do well and you know, I'm sure you
(56:16):
will do well.
Speaker 6 (56:17):
But it is quite a.
Speaker 32 (56:20):
It's a big thing to throw them and it's such
a big game. But there's guys have got a lot
to prove there. I think they're they're hurting.
Speaker 6 (56:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 32 (56:27):
Eden Parker is like basically the big one since the
World Cup final. You know this is the one that
they have to win to break that. Who do you know,
all Blacks, you're going to lose one eventually. We're hoping
it's going to be this game at the Fortress. But yeah,
I'm looking forward to a I think it's going to
be quite forward or the spring Box.
Speaker 6 (56:45):
They've got to play to their strengths.
Speaker 32 (56:48):
They're different styles, so all Blacks do love to run
the ball.
Speaker 6 (56:52):
I'm not too sure looking at the weather.
Speaker 32 (56:53):
It's been raining a bit, so we'll see what the
drainage is like on the pitch. But I'm looking forward
to a good game and a Springbok win Box by
ten Box by ten Ko.
Speaker 6 (57:03):
You heard that.
Speaker 4 (57:04):
I hope may the best team. When you'll being Willington
next week. We'll be at Shed twenty two next Saturday
afternoon if you can make it down down But great
to have you here today.
Speaker 6 (57:14):
Yeah, awesome, great testing.
Speaker 3 (57:15):
Here you go, Dan.
Speaker 4 (57:16):
Hooding from the play Army who are here and big
numbers eighty of them eighty and you'll see them and
hear them tonight.

Home mate. Hey, Hi, Jason Hare games very good now.
Speaker 4 (59:15):
It's good also to have you here because you're from
the Carpany Coast.
Speaker 3 (59:18):
I'm from the Camunity coast. You did you grow up
in pott you know a my hood.
Speaker 34 (59:22):
I did grow up and Potter indeed for about eighteen
or so years before moving on to different parts of
of the Willington area.
Speaker 4 (59:29):
How are you feeling about this game tonight? How do
you feel confident? You don't look nervous, You look pretty calm.
Speaker 34 (59:35):
I'm confident, but also nervous. It's I think it's a
fifty to fifty calls. It could be the bounce of
the ball or on refs call which hopefully doesn't come
into the equation at all. But I'm quietly confidence you
All Blacks will do it and continue the streak that's
been going on for the last Watson nineteen.
Speaker 3 (59:54):
Yeah, it's a while. So you're from Wellington.
Speaker 4 (59:57):
There's a test there next week, but you decided to
come up for this one as well.
Speaker 3 (01:00:00):
I decided to come by this one.
Speaker 34 (01:00:01):
This is my bucket list, the All Blacks Eden park
the street on the line. I thought, what better. It's
probably just as good as coming up to the World Cup.
It's not bigger for me, so I thought, I want
to do this once now. So hey, I'm just so
excited for this evening. I just can't wait.
Speaker 4 (01:00:16):
Good on you, mate, I can say I just love
the enthusiasm and the and the passion.
Speaker 3 (01:00:20):
It's it's such a big test for many reasons.
Speaker 4 (01:00:22):
But Artie Savilla, I'm sure you've watched over many years.
There's one hundredth test is at one a Pacific an
hour of course, but a crowd Hurricanes and Wellington player
it'd be pretty special, wouldn't it to see him have
a fitteen century game tonight?
Speaker 34 (01:00:37):
Indeed, is this going to be this one hundred an
actual fact on Tuesday we're out for dinner and all
the All Black boys are out. Some of the places
don't actually shook Hauty's hand on Tuesday night. And but yeah,
definitely good for his one hundreds this evening. So hopefully
the All Blacks play well. But next Saturday night, okay,
it'll be at these one hundredth them first. Yeah, but
being being at home the Wellington crowd is absolutely gonna
(01:00:59):
make it really really special for him, that's for sure.
Speaker 19 (01:01:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:01:01):
All right, So how are you going to full on time?
What have about? Half past one?
Speaker 4 (01:01:04):
It seems like the time has kind of crawling a
little bit to the seven o'clock kickoff you're here at
the Kingslanders, so you'll get some luncheon and then get
ready for a short jaunts to eat in park.
Speaker 3 (01:01:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 34 (01:01:13):
Indeed, we're going to be here for another couple of
hours and we're going to do a bit of a
pub crawl along Great No North on New North Road
here and the end of about five thirty we're going to
head off down to the down to the Eden Park.
And because it'll be the first time eating part for me,
so I have a look around Eating Park before we
take our seats and ready for the seven o'clock kickoff.
Speaker 4 (01:01:33):
So when you say bucket list, the bucket list is
Eating Park. I've never watched a rugby test at Eating Park,
but the first time at Eating Park completely amazing, amazing.
And when you say we, how many of you are there?
Speaker 3 (01:01:43):
Oh, there's myself and my partner Caroline.
Speaker 34 (01:01:46):
I did have three seats, but unfortunately the third person,
who his niece, had decided to have your wedding this afternoon,
so he's so he's missing out on it and he's
absolutely distraught. But I said to him and said, mate,
I said, these things happen, of course, but it's just
one of those things.
Speaker 3 (01:02:02):
In life, mate, you know, just bad time in concidence.
I feel like all come to the rugby.
Speaker 34 (01:02:07):
I don't know, I did say to mate, I said,
you know, family fun oil first. But yeah, he decided
to go family fun out. But he is definitely disappointed
not coming to the rugby. And there's been a few
jobs between him and I text messages, phone calls and stuff.
But he's definitely disappointed. But you know it's once in
a lifetime for both events.
Speaker 3 (01:02:26):
Of course, of course, good on together. Hey, well mate,
I hope tonight is everything you hope it will be.
I hope it's an all blacks one't and hope you
enjoy yourself.
Speaker 4 (01:02:35):
Had enjoy the little pub quarter of Eden Park, and
I'll look out for you in the crowd tonight.
Speaker 3 (01:02:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 34 (01:02:40):
Also, hey, lovely meet you Jason and go the all
blacks go the all black scam.
Speaker 3 (01:02:43):
Good stuff. I'll love it indeed.
Speaker 4 (01:02:46):
Eighty ten eight if you want to join in this
afternoon nine two ninety two on text, as we come
to you from the Kingslander. Hey, Stuart, we meant to
get to here before one, but couldn't. I asked the
question about whether you would take a drawer, would you
take a drawer.
Speaker 35 (01:02:59):
Yeah, no worries at all, Jason. And a wonderful atmosphere
down there. I can hear it in the background.
Speaker 3 (01:03:07):
Indeed it is.
Speaker 35 (01:03:08):
Yeah, look, I've thought about it. Very good question, Jason.
I think i'd go for I hate to say this,
I'd go for the draw. I think it's mainly to
keep that Eden Park who do alive and yeah, yeah,
it's a tough one. And I think a growl would
(01:03:29):
also still keep us in line to try to win
the championship this year.
Speaker 4 (01:03:35):
Yeah, that's another very good point because it's so tight,
isn't it, Stuart? With as I said before, all four
teams after two games having a win and a loss.
Speaker 3 (01:03:43):
I'm not sure anybody would have predicted that.
Speaker 4 (01:03:45):
I'm almost certain nobody thought that the Wallabies would beat
the spring Box at Alice Park. But here we are,
and what are you thinking about that game in Townsville
this afternoon, Wallaby's against Argentina.
Speaker 3 (01:03:57):
It'll be hot there. What do you reckon will happen there?
Speaker 35 (01:04:01):
Yes, I must confess I've been so distracted with our
all Blacks and ring Bolt it might come back to
bite me.
Speaker 19 (01:04:11):
Oh look at it.
Speaker 35 (01:04:12):
It'll be It'll be a great one, great, great sort
of event for both teams, and I'd give the edge
to the Wallabies, but we know how good the Argentinians
are even away from home.
Speaker 4 (01:04:28):
All right then, Stuart, So tonight, let's let's leave the
drawer out of the occasion, out of the equation.
Speaker 3 (01:04:33):
Are you are you confident optimistic?
Speaker 4 (01:04:36):
Are you cautiously optimistic about the All Blacks chances tonight?
Speaker 3 (01:04:40):
How would you?
Speaker 4 (01:04:41):
How would you assess your your levels of optimism?
Speaker 24 (01:04:45):
Oh?
Speaker 35 (01:04:45):
Cheers Jason. I've got to say I'm nervous. Actually it's
the old Yeah, I was going to say the head
and heart thing, but I'm hoping for an All Blacks
win win, but I'm very nervous.
Speaker 4 (01:05:02):
Jason, Well, it's great to get the hopefull we've settled
the nerves, even for a short time. And yeah, the
drawer may well come into it tonight. I get the
feeling this is going to be a very tight Test match.
I did say yesterday I thought the All Blacks might
win by nine. But the more I think about it,
and now that the day has arrived and I look
around at these rather confident looking South African fans here,
(01:05:25):
I wonder whether it might be a bit tighter than that.
Great to chat test, Stuart, thanks for taking the time
to call a couple on text here. Ian says, I'm
loving tupaor Vity back at Locke. It makes me wonder,
do you think his blindside games were less about him
moving to six permanently and more about giving Fabian Holland
some meaningful test experience go the abs. It's a good pointing,
(01:05:46):
and I think they were all in on the on
the tupaul Vi experiments where I thought they were. But
then the team came out on Thursday and here we
are with tupaor Vity back in the second row. I
listened to Scott Robertson at the media conference after the
team was named, and he talked about his desire to
(01:06:06):
to have impact off the bench.
Speaker 3 (01:06:09):
And Fabian Holland will certainly give you that.
Speaker 4 (01:06:12):
So will Summer Sauny Tokaho, so will to Mighty Williams,
so will Tyrol Lomax, so will Tuples see Kadifi. So
you're getting major impact off the bench there, and and
Fabian Holland a big part of that. So yeah, I
think was one of our best all blacks last year.
(01:06:32):
And that was all in the second row. So I
think what we do have the ability to do if
needed is bring Holland on, but he could move to
six Simon.
Speaker 3 (01:06:41):
Parker starting there.
Speaker 4 (01:06:42):
They've got options around what they do there, with toopor
VI now becoming a true utility a lock six. We
haven't had too many lock six's for a while, and
he is certainly one. He has certainly won.
Speaker 3 (01:06:57):
How do you see it playing out, Dan.
Speaker 16 (01:07:01):
Parney?
Speaker 18 (01:07:01):
I can see it Praye out worm, a referee decision
and the finals two minutes.
Speaker 4 (01:07:12):
We don't want that, though, Dan, do we don't want
it to be decided by a refereeing decision?
Speaker 36 (01:07:18):
Well, sometimes they are fini and that's what I'm.
Speaker 37 (01:07:22):
Gonna go with.
Speaker 3 (01:07:24):
All Right, Well, Dan, I hope it doesn't happen.
Speaker 4 (01:07:26):
I hope that it's decided without the referee having to
get involved.
Speaker 3 (01:07:30):
But I do take on board what you're saying.
Speaker 4 (01:07:32):
Look, tight matches are often decided by moments, and we
want those moments to be player inspired. But who knows
what say the referee might have text here, don't chink
to Piney, don't jink it. We're playing the number one
team in world rugby. They've won the last four tests
against US. We lost against the Pumas last week.
Speaker 3 (01:07:50):
We are up against it.
Speaker 4 (01:07:52):
We need to get very focused and be on it tonight. Naturally,
I'm hoping we win. It's at these one hundred game
for the All Blacks and we're defending our unbeaten run
of fifty tests in a row. Come on the All Blacks,
says this particular.
Speaker 3 (01:08:05):
Text, right.
Speaker 4 (01:08:07):
Well, they've come from far and wide for this one,
including these two gentlemen proudly wearing some retro All Blacks jerseys,
Caine and Hayden.
Speaker 3 (01:08:15):
Who's who?
Speaker 4 (01:08:16):
Yeah, I'm over here you Cane over there and Hayden
here are you black men of the cargo?
Speaker 33 (01:08:20):
That's right?
Speaker 4 (01:08:21):
Yeah, so you've come to Orphan on the day you
boys defend the Shield. What's going on here?
Speaker 3 (01:08:25):
Mate?
Speaker 17 (01:08:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 38 (01:08:26):
I've said we've bought done pretty early for this, so
this was about a month ago.
Speaker 3 (01:08:30):
And yeah, it would be good to be home though.
Speaker 4 (01:08:34):
Before we talk about the All Blacks, what, how are
you feeling about the shield staying there so you know
when you when you get back, it will.
Speaker 17 (01:08:40):
Still be there.
Speaker 3 (01:08:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 33 (01:08:42):
They got some rock stars and the souven Stags.
Speaker 38 (01:08:44):
At the moment they are flying so three in a row,
spend the first time in a long time.
Speaker 33 (01:08:49):
We've got three in a row, and I think i'll
make it four.
Speaker 4 (01:08:51):
The Shield does funny things to people, doesn't it, in
terms of holding on to it, but also the pressure
of trying to take it for crowd down there to
four O'clockick, gob wasn't it.
Speaker 3 (01:09:00):
We get in front of a TV and watch it before.
Speaker 6 (01:09:02):
You get to and we're ready to rock and roll.
Speaker 3 (01:09:05):
All right, So the two of you, the two of you,
is it just the two Were you part of a
wider group as four of us? Yeeah? Yeah, yeah, what
are you thinking? Are you nervous? You don't nervous about tonight?
I mean not the shield. It's gonna be Yeah, it'll
be fifty fifth years.
Speaker 6 (01:09:21):
I think we're all over.
Speaker 33 (01:09:22):
It's two test matches, stays south of stags.
Speaker 3 (01:09:25):
And you're blacks.
Speaker 33 (01:09:26):
I think it should have been the other way around.
I think the back should have been paying first in
the curtain raiser.
Speaker 4 (01:09:34):
Well, your men, you men need them to groups of
big part of this all blacks team of course as well.
Speaker 3 (01:09:38):
So no doubt.
Speaker 6 (01:09:40):
To see him yet.
Speaker 3 (01:09:41):
Yeah, well he's not the twenty three for tonight. But yeah,
what and so what what? How long are you here for? You?
Speaker 6 (01:09:48):
When?
Speaker 3 (01:09:49):
When did you hit town? And how long are you
here for it?
Speaker 38 (01:09:50):
Got up last night, back tomorrow morning, short and sharp.
Job done.
Speaker 33 (01:09:55):
They've been been to Eating Park before once to watch
the Legue Tens about ten years ago.
Speaker 3 (01:10:00):
League Tens.
Speaker 33 (01:10:02):
Thats a long time ago there.
Speaker 4 (01:10:03):
Yeah yeah, twenty eleven World Cup come up for a
couple ga Yeah brilliant.
Speaker 3 (01:10:07):
Well that it's great to see you. I hope we
got you a bed? Do we get the boys a
free band?
Speaker 6 (01:10:11):
We got yes?
Speaker 3 (01:10:12):
About you didn't even left it too much to turn up.
Speaker 6 (01:10:15):
I've ever yarn.
Speaker 4 (01:10:17):
I hate for all the beast of the All Blacks
annual Stags as well all the best.
Speaker 3 (01:10:23):
Canaan Hayden up from ver Cargo.
Speaker 4 (01:10:25):
And they couldn't possibly have imagined that the Shield would
be in Chicago when they flew out to get up here.
Speaker 3 (01:10:29):
But there we are.
Speaker 4 (01:10:32):
The atmosphere's building here is you can probably hear at
the Kingsland of Viny High.
Speaker 23 (01:10:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 17 (01:10:38):
Hi, memories of Eden Park in the spring box go
back to nineteen fifty six.
Speaker 3 (01:10:44):
Oh wow.
Speaker 17 (01:10:45):
My father was a very keen rugby follower and we
followed honing the game. Well, obviously we come from Wirappa,
so I went to the two games and Wellington. I
think we went to Taranaki, but then we went to
Auckland and by memory I was twelve yearyears old. I
(01:11:07):
think the week before was the Mary match and everyone
was where the Mary's going to do him? And of
course they thrashed them. And then the following week was
the Fourth Test, and I just remembered the crowd. My
brother and I got in early because we queued and
the children's cue, and my father was way way down
(01:11:32):
the way down the road, so we read and then
spread ourselves out, and then we had to spot dad
as he walked along. And I differently remember Ian Clark
Yeah saying I'm buggered.
Speaker 2 (01:11:48):
Everyone who.
Speaker 3 (01:11:51):
It was? It was an outrage, Wasn't it a scandal?
Said that after the game. Yeah, incredible, incredible.
Speaker 17 (01:11:58):
But the real reason I'm the real reason I'm ringing
is that about a book that I've read many times
called Old Heroes by Warwick Roger. And if I've heard
of it, an old he was a journalist back. But
it's about Springbok tour and it's about everything about it.
It's not like just a rugby book. Now I've got
(01:12:21):
to read a little excerpt, and this is exactly what
the fifty sixth term was like. It's an advert from
the christ Church Star. Refined gentleman wishes to meet cultured
widow view matrimony, must have independent means and two tickets
(01:12:42):
to the Third Test. Please send photograph of tickets.
Speaker 4 (01:12:53):
Oh, tremendous, tremendous stufffany Oh that's beautiful. That is beautiful.
I'll tell you what. There'll be a few around these
parts who wouldn't mind a couple of tickets of the
game tonight. Great memories, mate, thanks for joining us. Appreciate
your calling there, Peter.
Speaker 15 (01:13:09):
He may go here it look it's this is Karmer.
He is then fifty sixty as well, and I think
you'll be the same again, you.
Speaker 22 (01:13:21):
Hear me, Yes, I can some here. Some impressions are
I had as a kid of sixteen. There are big
public trees there and waiting for the game. Men were
up to puplic tree, and they kept falling down because
they got as they drink more and more. The other
one is at the end of the game. Men wear
hats in those days, and the whole field was covered
(01:13:41):
with flying hats as we won the game, if the
other one gets if everyone gets a chance, have a
look at Ponzi reading Hartare and compare it to today.
You never seen it?
Speaker 3 (01:13:55):
Yeah, and not quite the same, not quite the same, Peter,
Sorry mate, I have to move, got got another guest
to get on. But yeah, they're fifty sixteen.
Speaker 4 (01:14:03):
I've just been reminded Peter Jones, Notty and Clark with
the famous um buggered comment after the game, which at
the time was it was highly controversial. These days wouldn't
even raise an eyebrow. What we're at the Kingslander in
in Auckland ahead of this test match tonight. Don't forget
we've got full commentary from five past seven and after
(01:14:24):
the game as well. If you're at the game and
driving home, or you're keeping eyes on the game or
ears on.
Speaker 3 (01:14:32):
It and then want to comment afterwards.
Speaker 4 (01:14:34):
They've given me the microphone after the game as well,
going to open the lines after full time for an
hour or so to have a chat about what plays
out at Eden Park today. We'll take a breakthrough from
the Kingslander when we come back. It's our Australian correspondent
Adam Peacock.
Speaker 26 (01:14:50):
Coling down to All Blacks v. South Africa on your
home of Sport.
Speaker 1 (01:14:55):
It's Weekend Sport Live from the Kingslander in Auckland with
Jason Vine and GJ. Gardner Homes, New Zealand's most trusted
home builder, News talks envy.
Speaker 4 (01:15:06):
And to fill up Now at the Kingsland in Auckland
ahead of tonight's Test match. Let's get across the Tasman
our Australian correspondent Adam Peacock has with us before the
All Blacks even play South Africa.
Speaker 8 (01:15:17):
To night.
Speaker 3 (01:15:17):
Adam, it's the.
Speaker 4 (01:15:18):
Wallabies hosting the Pumas in Townsville.
Speaker 3 (01:15:22):
Well, what should we expect in this one?
Speaker 39 (01:15:26):
Thirty players walking off a pictured half time with sunburn.
There's got to be warm up there.
Speaker 21 (01:15:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 39 (01:15:34):
Argentina have come in here a couple of times and
really rocked us. And as you guys know, they can
play a bit of rugby when they put their minds
to it. So danger game American for Wallabies after the
highs and almost the amazing double win over in South Africa.
But yeah, they just got to look up the warrio
(01:15:56):
I've got with the Wallabies. They've been up for a
while so it's a bit of a test here for Josement.
They've been up for those three lines tour matches and
then over to South Africa back here now wait and see.
But I'll be really really encouraged if we put our
to tendas of the Sword, and that'll make me think
that really good things are ahead in the next couple
of years.
Speaker 3 (01:16:15):
Absolutely right. Let's go to football.
Speaker 4 (01:16:17):
The SOCCA Rus getting home with a late goal from
Debatt Max Bella last night against will watching Canberra, what
did you make of the game?
Speaker 39 (01:16:24):
You guys wore better for the most part, and then
we put our subs on It changed the game, just
the energy straight away, especially from Nesra Ra and Kunda.
So yeah, Tainy Pop has got some choices to make
when he collates this squad in the next couple of
occasions about where he fits in the impact players or
(01:16:45):
do the impact players have the impact from the start.
So I think New Zealand controlled the game. We weren't
very good, as I mentioned, especially in that first half,
but yeah the twos, a couple of good, really good
saves from Paul Izzo pretty much kept us in it,
and then we came up with something good in the
last minutes. So frustration for the kiwis happiness for the
(01:17:07):
soccer US, But I don't think there's much between those
two sides.
Speaker 4 (01:17:10):
Yeah, no, we were really encouraged over the site and
you bang on on the hour mark when Chris Wooden
and the returning Ryan Thomas departed, it seemed to be
a bit of a sea change. And you mentioned Aaron
Kunda Thorpe Motre when he came on as well, out
of real limitus front for the soccer US. So you
we're looking for looking forward to game two back here
in New Zealand on Tuesday, let's go to the NRL.
(01:17:31):
The top eight has all but been confirmed. It looks like,
barring spectacular run of results across the weekend, the qualifying
finals will be Raiders, Broncos, Storm, Bulldogs. We've got the
best four teams there, haven't we.
Speaker 19 (01:17:46):
Well, yeah, I think Penris.
Speaker 39 (01:17:48):
You just don't know what Penis are going to come
up with. And then you've got the wildcard, the Roosters
who have got in this run in the last few weeks.
So I'm not convinced that the top four contains the
two Grand finalists, if you know what I mean. Ye
Yet so it looks like provided the Penrith take care
of business today against Saint George La Wire, that you
(01:18:10):
guys will be facing Penrith first up.
Speaker 3 (01:18:12):
Oh that'll be great. Yeah, look we're looking forward to that.
Speaker 39 (01:18:15):
Yeah, I've got to draw for the Wires, especially after
last night they were they weren't good against Manley unfortunately
in that game at Paul Pins Park. But now, ironically enough,
that's where Penrith season kind of flipped on its head
when after Origin they took over a bunch of you know,
New South Wild's Cup players. They didn't have their five
(01:18:35):
best players out of Origin and they they did a
job on you guys. That's in awful there. So yeah,
up in the air. But Penrith and Roosters, I reckon
they are as good a chance as the top four
of doing something special.
Speaker 4 (01:18:49):
Yeah, which is a worry for us and also for
the Sharks, who will probably i'd say, come up against
the Roosters next week. You're being on Adam the you know,
teams seven and eight might go into the into the
elimination finals as favorites. Oddly enough, even though they're away
from home and finished further down the ladder. It's a
old game and a tight comp isn't it.
Speaker 39 (01:19:08):
Yeah. The food side is that they've got to roll
the dice three times to make sure that they come
up with the right number, so there's no wiggle room
for error. A bad thirty minutes of footy in their
season's over, So yeah, I just trust that Penrith don't
have that bad thirty minutes, isn't them. They might have
a like a like an up and down ten minutes
(01:19:29):
or fifteen minutes, but they're that good and what they've
provided that everyone is going to be wary of them
come next week.
Speaker 4 (01:19:35):
Indeed, we're getting towards the business end as always. Mate,
Thanks for your time across New Zealand, enjoy the rest
of your weekend and we'll watch it again next Saturday.
Speaker 39 (01:19:42):
You too, Thanks Bunny, No, thank.
Speaker 3 (01:19:44):
You, Adam Adam Peacock.
Speaker 4 (01:19:45):
They're out of Australia and his regular slot nine away
from two. A couple of texts before we go to
the break, Graham system fit so earlier on.
Speaker 3 (01:19:52):
Use the phrase slow burn.
Speaker 4 (01:19:54):
I think we are on a slow burn with Razor,
which suits me. Remember we've peaked between Rugby World Cups
too often in the past.
Speaker 3 (01:20:01):
On your questions.
Speaker 4 (01:20:02):
Yes, I would take a drawer right now, but if
we're head to win it at the end, I'd kick
for touch and go for the wind. Proud and determined,
says Graham Good on your Graham Good text, and Gunner
says that the score is twelve nine all penalties, then yeah,
take the guaranteed three and live to fight another day.
But if it's thirty four to thirty one and our
forwards on a roll, kick it in the corner, back
(01:20:25):
your line out and rumble over, it would also lead
to potentially more penalties, yellow card even a penalty drive.
Speaker 3 (01:20:31):
Thanks gunn Up.
Speaker 4 (01:20:32):
Always appreciate your viewpoint on the radio as well. Eight

It is starting to get.
Speaker 4 (01:21:02):
Really quite full in here and what are we not

All Blacks fans chatting with South African fans and the like.
It's just just awesome, just an awesome atmosphere here.

Speaker 3 (01:21:41):
We go to the news today.
Speaker 4 (01:21:42):
Piney, I think South Africa will win tonight, says Blair.
But more controversially, I think the Wallabies will win the
Rugby Championship. Interesting, Blair, Piney, I'm on my.
Speaker 3 (01:21:52):
Way to watch the Mighty Mulus beat the Turbos, looking
forward to watching the All Blacks game on TV after that.
And finally, I'm really optimistic about tonight. I reckon this
is the.
Speaker 4 (01:22:01):
Type of game, says this text that the All Blacks
get up for our big names will lead through and
someone unexpected is going to have their best game in black.
Keeping the streak alive going to be a classic. The
All Black's taking it home by three or less. Let's
go Black. Thank you, Jack, appreciate your text very much
more feedback on the Rugby after two o'clock, but straight
after the two o'clock news, we'll get you to Canberra
(01:22:24):
where the All Whites have been narrowly beaten by the
Soccaroos in the first batch of the soccer ashes last night.
Speaker 3 (01:22:29):
All Whites Captain Chris Wood after two.
Speaker 2 (01:22:33):
Bringing you the build up, shall take the lead, the battle.
Speaker 29 (01:22:39):
And the banter give you test messages off to find
the expectations if.
Speaker 6 (01:22:43):
We compete in the win.
Speaker 2 (01:22:44):
As we come down to the biggest Test match of
the year, it's Witch in Sports with Tess and pay.
Speaker 1 (01:22:52):
Lay from the Kingslander and Auclift on your home of
Sports News Talks, MBES.
Speaker 4 (01:22:58):
And D Seven past two as we come to your
live from the Kingslander building the water five past seven
kickoff tonight, So what's that Five hours to go before
Eden Park becomes the center of the rugby universe as
the All Blacks take on South Africa. Fifty matches unbeaten
on that patch of grass. For the All Blacks, can
they make it fifty one tonight or South Africa, the
(01:23:20):
South Africa of twenty twenty five be the team that
puts an end to that.
Speaker 3 (01:23:24):
Proud record which stretches all the way back.
Speaker 4 (01:23:26):
To nineteen ninety four one hundred Test match tonight as well.
For Ardie Savia, Chris Boyd was the man who gave
him his Wellington debut back in twenty twelve and also
coached him at the Hurricanes.
Speaker 3 (01:23:38):
Did he know.
Speaker 4 (01:23:41):
That Artie was going to beat as good as he
has turned out to be. We'll also play a sporting
chance this our and head to southmand where the shield
is going on the line, the Ranfury Shield, of course,
is there anything else? Any other shield? We'll checking down
there as well. But to kick us off this our
(01:24:01):
heartbreak for the All Whites. In Game one of the
Soccer Ashes and Canberra last night, a late goal from
soccer Us sub Max Ballard has given Australia up a
one they'll win in a game New Zealand dominated for
long periods. Game twos in Auckland on Tuesday night or
White skip up.
Speaker 3 (01:24:15):
Chris Wood is with us as the team.
Speaker 4 (01:24:17):
Prepares to depart Canberra in a few hours.
Speaker 3 (01:24:20):
Thanks for your time, Chris.
Speaker 4 (01:24:21):
How do you reflect in general terms on last night's
performance from the side?
Speaker 40 (01:24:26):
Look, yeah, I think it's a very positive outcome that
we played well, but not getting away from the illusion
that we didn't win the game when we dominated so
much of it and we're a better stide for majority
of the time. So look, it's a bittersweet, but we've
got to focus in and do the business in the
second league to win their overall ashes.
Speaker 4 (01:24:47):
How do you balance the disappointment of losing the game
with being encouraged by the way you played and controlled
the game for long periods.
Speaker 3 (01:24:55):
Can you strike that balance?
Speaker 40 (01:24:58):
Yeah, it's a tough one to strike because you are
disappointed that you can see on a sucker punch with
really there any chance of the game when we had
chances to put the game to bed. I mean, there's
no illusion getting away from if I stick one of
my chances away, that game turns out differently and we
win that game in my eyes for sure, But we've
(01:25:19):
got to take positive of we're creating those chances and
on another day, we'll stick them away and we'll be
running away with that games.
Speaker 4 (01:25:27):
What are the main things you can take from game
one into game two on Tuesday night and often the
things to really build on.
Speaker 40 (01:25:36):
Well, I think that the domination that we showed on
the ball, nullifying their strengths and nullifying their going forward
and creating chances. And then the best thing for us
is we actually created chances, which is something we've planned
to try and improve on and do better going into
big games like against these top teams in the world.
Speaker 10 (01:25:57):
So we've got to take the positives of that.
Speaker 4 (01:26:00):
You were off one on one with Paul Azzo in
the first half. Just take us through your mindset. Is
that passage of I played out?
Speaker 22 (01:26:09):
Look?
Speaker 40 (01:26:09):
Yeah, I mean it was one of those when I
went through I decided to take it early and watching
the back he's actually made a very good say. Of course,
I'm more disappointed I should score. I should do better
in those situations as the person I am, the striker
I am, and as I said before, under no illusions,
if I scored that we go on to win the
game because we're that dominant.
Speaker 4 (01:26:30):
How good is it having Ryan Thomas back in the
national side for the first time in six years.
Speaker 10 (01:26:36):
Look here, it's fantastic. We know the quality brings. Obviously,
he's been in.
Speaker 40 (01:26:40):
Europe for a long period of time now and thankfully
he's injury free and doing extremely well for his club.
Speaker 10 (01:26:47):
So it's brilliant to have him in the setup.
Speaker 40 (01:26:49):
I think we could see last night the quality brought
and hopefully we can back it up again for him
and the team come Tuesday.
Speaker 4 (01:26:56):
And we saw you Chris come off after an hour
or so. Was that always the plan that your minutes
would be managed in that way?
Speaker 40 (01:27:04):
Look, yeah, it's one of those I've got a long season,
we've got European campaign, lots of internationals, we're going to
be playing over fifty five to sixty games this season
as a club and country. It's one of those things.
Minutes have to be managed and they will be managed
at club as well level and things like that. So
it's just normal in these circumstances. But as we saw
(01:27:26):
back in the qualifiers that we're ready to play full
games if needed and things like that.
Speaker 10 (01:27:32):
So it's just one of those things.
Speaker 4 (01:27:34):
So without really knowing for sure until your touchdown, would
you be good for ninety on Tuesday or is it
likely to be another hour or so in the second
game as well.
Speaker 40 (01:27:44):
It's just waiting to see how the body turns around.
Two games in quick succession is what we're going to
have to look at for the whole team, and we,
and well not we, the manager will make the judgment
calls on those. So it's one of those things where
I'm ready to start the game as I feel.
Speaker 35 (01:28:00):
Now.
Speaker 40 (01:28:01):
Body will tell me in the next forty eight hours
how it's feeling and where it's ready to go.
Speaker 4 (01:28:06):
Can you since within the squad now are heightened energy
with World Cup qualification, secure players looking to put their
best foot forward to be on that plane next year.
Speaker 40 (01:28:18):
Yeah, well, and truly, I think it's a very positive
and exciting time. As you say, we're all fighting for
positions now, we're all fighting to be on that plane
over there. We've got a great squad of thirty five
forty players to choose from these days, and everybody wants
to be on that plane over there. So yeah, the
people that are playing in the moment have got the
chance to really put their foot forward and stamp their
(01:28:41):
plane ticket over to the US Mexico in Canada.
Speaker 10 (01:28:45):
But it's very exciting.
Speaker 4 (01:28:47):
Indeed, there's just a couple of questions on your Premier
League season win loss and a draw to start, how
do you evaluate Nottingham Forest's ability to match or even
better last season's finish.
Speaker 10 (01:28:59):
Look, I think we're in a very strong position.
Speaker 40 (01:29:02):
We've been able to really go for it in the
transfer window, brought in some quality, some depth and to
the squad to make it look like a better squad
than we have last year, which is fantastic to see.
And that's the positives that we've got. And who knows,
I think, well, the squad we've got, we're more than
capable of finishing where we did last year and competing
in Europe.
Speaker 4 (01:29:22):
Yeah, and just on those European nights you'll be playing
Europa League. The drawers out for the initial part of that.
How special are those home European nights going to be
for fans and players at the city ground this season?
Speaker 10 (01:29:36):
Look will be unbelievable.
Speaker 40 (01:29:37):
I mean everybody's talked about the city ground under the
lights in European competitions. It's been away for a long
period of time, but there's something special. So now we
get to finally feel it and see it. What it's
going to be like when we play that first home game.
But yeah, we've got some great games coming up, winnable
games for sure, and hopefully we can go far in
the competition.
Speaker 4 (01:29:56):
And just to finish, you originally honored with inclusion in
the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for your
exploits last season. How big a moment was that for you,
Chris in terms of your football career.
Speaker 40 (01:30:08):
Look here, it was huge and I didn't really realize
it until I was actually there and around the people.
They were on stage at the same time. So it's
something that I'm very honored with and something that's going
to live long in my lifetime. And look, it's maybe
more hungry and ready to hopefully put my best foot
forward to go again next season to be in that
(01:30:28):
Team of the year again.
Speaker 3 (01:30:30):
Good man, Chris, Thanks for chatting mate.
Speaker 4 (01:30:32):
I hope the background noise here wasn't too distracting for
your safe travels made and all the best on Tuesday.
Speaker 3 (01:30:36):
Night, prom chets pony take care you take care too, mate,
Thanks to day Chris Wood joining us out of Canberra. There.
Speaker 4 (01:30:43):
They were good last night, the All Whites really really
good and as good as I've seen actually from our
national men's team against a quality opposition like Australia. New
zeal em bossed that game for an hour of it
and actually, funnily enough, I'm not sure that's the right phrase, but.
Speaker 3 (01:31:04):
It was when Chris Wood was withdrawn from.
Speaker 4 (01:31:06):
The game after sixty minutes along with Ryan Thomas, that
it felt as though the ascendancy was almost back with Australia.
But I was just so encouraged by what I saw
from the All Whites last night.
Speaker 3 (01:31:18):
Ryan Thomas.
Speaker 4 (01:31:18):
Man, how we have missed that player, How we have
missed his influence around the team. He's had a horrendous
run of injuries, Ryan Thomas, but finally, now, finally we're
going to hopefully get the chance to see him in
an All White shirt. He was on, as I say,
for an hour last night and just looked every inst
the player that we all hoped he would be off
(01:31:39):
the back of these injuries that he has suffered. So
to have Ryan Thomas back in the national set up
as brilliant, Chris Wood leading the line, New Zealand relatively
untroubled rarely until the goal went in the eighty seventh minute.
Speaker 3 (01:31:51):
There was a situation really that.
Speaker 4 (01:31:55):
It was a real sense of deflation because often in
the past New Zealand's sides would have been happy just
to sort of compete with Australia.
Speaker 3 (01:32:04):
They dominated that game by every metric.
Speaker 4 (01:32:06):
They had more chances, they had more possession, they had
better creativity. Every stat and every metric was in favor
of New Zealand, apart from the one that matters the most,
and that is the score line at the end of
the day. So what happens now these two teams. I
think they're actually sharing a charted flight.
Speaker 3 (01:32:27):
I heard to Auckland.
Speaker 4 (01:32:30):
They land late this evening and then on Tuesday night
it is game two and what is the soccer Ashes series?
And with the score at one nil to Australia, it
is the aggregate score at the end of the two games.
So if New Zealand can win by two, they'll get
the soccer Ashes. If it's a one goal win for
New Zealand on Tuesday night, then we'll go to a
penalty shootout. So something a bit different there as well,
(01:32:53):
as we take on Australia for a rare two game series.
In recent times, news Talks that Be and Weekend Sport

it is really starting to fill up now.

Speaker 3 (01:36:03):
Brenda, you were at Eden Park for the nineteen eighty
one All Black spring Box game, will you?
Speaker 15 (01:36:09):
Yes?
Speaker 25 (01:36:10):
I definitely was. We had to go through lines and
lines were on uneral throat of containers with the police
spot watching everywhere to sew that we had tickets.
Speaker 41 (01:36:32):
But the thing that stays with me is that this
is the first time of a number of tests I've
been to we seeing the national anthem.
Speaker 3 (01:36:53):
Love it, Brenda, love it. Hopefully you can hear us?
Speaker 4 (01:36:56):
Okay, there was just a chart going on in the background,
but yeah, what an iconic test match, Alan Houston kicking
the winning penalty right at the end for a twenty
five twenty two one and great to know your memories
are still so vivid forty odd years on Brenda, especially
around the national anthem.
Speaker 3 (01:37:14):
George, how are you mate?
Speaker 42 (01:37:16):
I'm very excited, poney. I felt compelled to call you
after listen to the last hour.
Speaker 43 (01:37:21):
It's what a way to get the juice and slam
for the game tonight.
Speaker 42 (01:37:23):
Mate, it's going to.
Speaker 3 (01:37:25):
Be the mate. You'd love it here, George, Yeah, I
could see right in here.
Speaker 19 (01:37:32):
Well, I'm down and will into next week, so I
might have to scope out where you're going to be
set up and go down there with the mates.
Speaker 42 (01:37:37):
But mate, I think we're going to really take the
Africans tonight. I say I don't don't say that, don't
say that lightly.
Speaker 43 (01:37:45):
I think this group of all blecks have proven the
bigger the occasion, be at the World Cup quarter final
last year or the game in Africa when Fozzy was
under the pump and things, the better the performance and
these guys, you'd have to think it's just going to
be so up for this game. It's it's not funny.
Speaker 42 (01:38:01):
With Ardise hundreds and the whole, the whole occasion around
Africa at Eden Park. You know these guys will be
so into it then. If anything, that's probably only been
the frustrating part about the Ublenks in the last few years,
as that I've less concentration and key parts and last
week was a good example. But you would have to
think there's just no room for that this tonight and
(01:38:24):
they're going to go for it.
Speaker 4 (01:38:26):
Yeah, couldn't agree more. George got a couple of other
cours to get to mate. Thanks for calling allways, and
George chadding Shed twenty two next week. Mate, will be
at Shed twenty two next week if you've got any
time between twelve and three. Would love you to pop down,
mate and say today We'll even put a drink stout
tore aside for you.
Speaker 3 (01:38:40):
Mate. Be good to see you. Oh one hundred and
eighty ten eighties our number high Cliff.
Speaker 44 (01:38:45):
Hi, Jason. Yeah, just I'm actually excited to like the
last guy and you talk back. But I just thought
I let you come into a little memorability that I
can't remember totally. But it was a nineteen fifty six
when I think they call them the scratchman steams ahead
all around the place, and I was ten years of age,
(01:39:06):
but my uncle took me there and he knocked on
the back of the house and that we came in
and we climbed on the roof to watch the gardens. Yeah, yeah,
it's a certainly exciting times.
Speaker 3 (01:39:25):
Yeah, good only Cliffe, I remember, I remember.
Speaker 4 (01:39:27):
I think a lot of a lot of grounds had
similar sort of stands. I'm not quite sure why they
were called the Scotsman stands. I guess it was some
sort of connection to the fact that maybe our fine
countrymen from Scotland don't like putting their hands in their
pockets necessarily to buy a ticket. But yeah, standing up
and looking over fences or there was a famous one
at Carrisbrook as well where you could stand up by
(01:39:48):
the railway tracks from memory and look down on the
ground either rugby or cricket. But yeah, I'm excited to Cliff,
good to chat yep, Hay and height. How are you
feeling about tonight.
Speaker 45 (01:39:58):
I'm feeling good, but I'm feeling real good. I just
going to bring back a memory about Eden Park we
went down on the teach and fifteen to the to
the semi final of the of the World Cricket Cup
and we had a raady from Dargable. There was there
was a busload of us. We spent. We went up
to the Kingslander three times. I'll tell you what it
(01:40:19):
costs you, twenty seven dollars for a taxi from Eden
Park to the kings Leander.
Speaker 3 (01:40:24):
Twenty seven dollars to only about four hundred.
Speaker 16 (01:40:28):
I know that well's I don't know because it started
raining and then and when we finally got back there
and the herey Jeff hit the sex off the second
last boar and got us into the World Cup final.
Speaker 3 (01:40:40):
And mate, I remember that so well, Hayden. I just
they must have seen you coming, mate, twenty seven dollars
from Edinburgh.
Speaker 45 (01:40:46):
Oh well we were as we were as follows text
by that stage, mate, and it was what a great day, oh.
Speaker 3 (01:40:53):
Mate, so good Hayden.
Speaker 4 (01:40:54):
Then I brought that teen years ago now mate, that
is ten years ago and some since then. What a
day water ground. That's been good to chat to your mate.
Enjoy whatever happens tonight at Eden Park as well.
Speaker 3 (01:41:06):
We're at the.
Speaker 4 (01:41:06):
Kingslander as we build towards five past seven kickoff. In
this one, it is an extra special night tonight of
course for one player in particular fifteen.
Speaker 33 (01:41:16):
And played Irish territory.
Speaker 40 (01:41:17):
Artie Savea is broken through Arti Savia, Paddick Chacks petti
U Harti Savia another one for the All Blacks that
was too easy for Martie and the All Blacks.
Speaker 3 (01:41:27):
I haven't fun at eden Park tonight. Let's say Bartie
has fun at eden Park tonight.
Speaker 4 (01:41:32):
Artie Savier will become the fifteenth man to bring up
one hundred Test matches for the All Blacks will be
the fourth loose forward to reach that mark Richie McCourt
one hundred and forty eight, Karen Reid one hundred and
twenty seven and Sam Kine one hundred and four Test matches.
Artie Savia is also the highest try scoring forward in
All Blacks Test history with thirty. He debuted in June
(01:41:53):
of twenty sixteen, coming off the bench in a thirty
nine twenty one win over Wales at Eden Park. Chris
Boyd gave Artie Savier his Wellington debut in twenty twelve
and coached him there until twenty fourth and then coached
him as head coach of the Hurricanes between twenty fifteen
and twenty eighteen.
Speaker 3 (01:42:12):
Chris bord is with us on weekends. For Chris, when
did you first become.
Speaker 4 (01:42:16):
Aware of Artie Savia around the Wellington club scene?
Speaker 18 (01:42:21):
I think he was about seven and he was already
standing out. And I think he was seven years old
playing in an under thirteen competition and he already stood out. Say,
you know, some some players, you know, have to work hard.
I'm not saying he doesn't work hard, because it's one
(01:42:42):
of us hoemotes. He is a hard worker, but you
know he he had physical and mental prows as a
very young man. Particularly you know, I remember at Wrongtai
College seeing him and thinking, you know, you look at
a kid and you think, well, I think he's good
enough to be an all back. But if you you
say those things publicly and people think you're getting carried away.
(01:43:05):
But he certainly stood out as.
Speaker 4 (01:43:07):
A very young man when he first came into the
representative environment with Wellington and then on towards the Hurricanes.
Where did you see him grow during that time as
he became a professional rugby player.
Speaker 18 (01:43:20):
Think I think the interesting thing that the year before
when he was it Wrongtai. You know, he was in
a New Zealand schools team that, funny enough had I
think Patrick Turpolotto was in it, Roger Turvashischek was in it,
Nami la Marki was on that side. But he was
a golden boot in that period of time, so you know,
he already stood out. But he's the thing that I
(01:43:42):
admired him the most for in a lot of ways.
And it was a bit of a struggle for him
as well as he climbed the ranks from you NPC
to Super Rugby to all Blacks. There was always there
was always pressure on him to get heavier, to be bigger,
and I did feel particularly sorry for him. He was
(01:44:04):
you know, he got to a point where he didn't
actually really enjoy eating because it was not something that
was pleasurable. It's something that he had to do to
try and get his weight up. And he was always
fairly bloody minded about it. Is that, yes, he knew
he could do with a few extra kegs, but he
just worked incredibly hard at the things that he was
(01:44:27):
really good at and you know it's carried him a
long way.
Speaker 4 (01:44:30):
Hindsight's always twenty twenty of course, Chris, but could you
tell that he was not only going to be an
All Black but a great All Black.
Speaker 18 (01:44:41):
I think he had the potential to be. And again,
you know he was in the two thousand and thirteen
on the twenty side in France, and Scott Barrett It's
Patrick were both on that side. But in that side,
Ardie was absolutely clearly the best player for New Zealand.
(01:45:05):
It wasn't a terribly six pssful campaign, but he stood
out completely and I always thought he had the potential
to be great because Ardie marches to the beata his
own drum. He's not conventional and is thinking, but he's
(01:45:26):
very very committed to what he thinks is right and wrong.
And he's a great team man. And you know he
puts a lot of effort, a lot of effort into
doing the best for a team. And so he was.
He was a gifted athlete in some ways. Although on
a Sunday morning when you saw him at recovery, he
(01:45:48):
had you know, the way he hobbled around, you'd think,
you know, he wasn't, but you know, he's physically capable.
He's mentally very tough and very determined, very resilient and
he's open minded and a learner, and so that combination is,
you know, carries you a long way.
Speaker 4 (01:46:05):
And he's a good bloke in many ways. He's read
to find the role of the all purpose lose forward
as well. It doesn't really seem to matter which number
he's wearing on his back. What did you ask of
him when he was in your sides?
Speaker 18 (01:46:20):
I don't think like anybody really, all you can ask
from people is to do their best and make sure
they'd give you everything. And so that was pretty easy
for Ardia. You know, he was probably being one of
the most consistent performers. You know, he doesn't very often
have a bad game. He's very capable of a great game,
(01:46:42):
but he doesn't very often have a bad game either.
So his consistency is really high, and that's based around
mental and physical preparation, which he's very good at both.
Speaker 3 (01:46:56):
How deep is his influence on the players he plays alongside, I.
Speaker 18 (01:47:03):
Think it's well documented at Artie's not a huge talker
in that respect, He's you know, he's not he's not
an orator or a conventional leader in respect of he's
a bit of a I'll do my talking on the
field follow me. So he's got some fairly strong views
about different things off the field, but on the field
(01:47:26):
and in the rugby environment, you know, it's all about
just working out what his role is, what he needs
to do, preparing himself the best he can and delivering,
you know, for you. So he is a great person
to have in a team environment.
Speaker 3 (01:47:44):
Did the two of you ever disagree as player and coach?
Speaker 18 (01:47:49):
I don't remember ever having a disagreement with with Hardie.
I think we were reasonably aligned. I just wanted him
to go out and express himself and be the best
he could be and if if, if that meant whatever
it meant, it meant.
Speaker 10 (01:48:08):
And so.
Speaker 18 (01:48:10):
You didn't need to be hard on those boys around
around around some of the decisions and mistakes, because invariably
they were harder on themselves than probably I would have
been anyway. So it's pretty easy to coach, very open minded,
very keen to be the best it can be, and
(01:48:31):
you know, gave themselves to the team.
Speaker 4 (01:48:34):
Yeah, special occasion for a special platonut he do you reckon?
The All Blacks will go against however get.
Speaker 18 (01:48:38):
A night Well, clearly my hearts says the all Blacks.
I think it's been very interesting that South Africa have
picked Laruette fullback and Pilard at ten and they've been
quite conservative around their forward selections and the respect of
(01:49:03):
you know, they they're very good at the African type
of role. So I think the interesting thing for South
Africa and interesting for Tony Brown as well when he's
if South Africa want to play a more expensive and
a higher risk game, it's not in the nature of
their culture. And I think by that selection, what we've
(01:49:25):
seen here is that they're going to I'd be surprised
if they don't go back to type. So they're going
to go physicality, set piece, aerial game territory and try
and try and go back to their to their DNA,
which is their grind. That's what the selection tells me.
Can we stand up to their grind? I think we
(01:49:48):
probably can, but I think it's going to be close.
Speaker 4 (01:49:50):
All right, Chris, got to leave it there, mate, But
thanks for your recollections, and I guess thank you for
picking Ardie Savia, although who by the sounds of it,
he was turning not just your head, but everybody's head
around Wellington Rugby circles at the back end of the
two thousands and into the Tens Wellington debut in twenty twelve,
Hurricanes debut the following year, and then of course he
(01:50:12):
went on that end of season two at the All
Blacks as the very first apprentice All Black. That was
a new innovation at the time where they would take
a player like Ardie Savia just to get him into
the environment, to show on what it might be like
and maybe fire in him a desire to become a
proper All Black. Well he did that and became an
absolutely proper All Black in every single sense of the
(01:50:35):
word when he made his debut against Wales off the
bench in twenty sixteen at Eden Park and then went
on to become one of our greats. Still is one
of our greats, and tonight will become our fifteenth Test
Centurion when he runs out on Eden Park in the
number seven Jersey tonight for the All Blacks. What are
(01:50:57):
we time wise? Twenty two away from three? Just want
to update you on some live sport. There is Bunning's
MPC action going on at the moment, a couple of
games currently live. One of them is in Napier where
Hawks Bay are leading Wellington twenty one points to seven
jeepus after only twenty five minutes of the Magpies on

Speaker 4 (01:51:35):
And somewhat and a lot to do it today, mate,
Yes andd that's at three o'clock. We'll also keep tabs
on that Ian on text, Pony. I was at Star
de France in twenty twenty three. We were robbed by
the officials in that World Cup final. I hope they
take into account the tactics of the South Africans, especially
how they forced the headhigh collision with Sam Kane and
(01:51:57):
caused them to be red carded. Also the unnecessary recall
of the try by our half back due to some
old oblivious knock on. I don't remember that that Sam,
but clearly you do. Let's hope that it is redressed tonight.
Henry says Piney. I'll be happy with a drawer. I've
got ten dollars on it. It's paying eighteen's nice one, Henry,
and can I piney all blacks all day? Twenty four
(01:52:19):
to fourteen from up the river getting a feed of
white bait, but no call from Razor yet up the
Mighty Magpies, good on you and finally are the Scotsman's Grandstand.
We were talking about that before at Carrisbrook says this
text was the railway embankment, perfect for viewing the games,
and so named because you didn't pay. It's always about
(01:52:42):
a scotsman's wallet. All right, let's do our giveaway. Let's
play a sporting chance thanks to the tab. If you
haven't heard this competition before, what we do is I

TAV Here's how it works. I'm going to offer Paul
a choice of three bets short, evens or long. Paul's
going to choose the one he wants. We're going to
place a one hundred and fifty dollars bonus bet on
his behalf, and if it comes in the minus, the
original one hundred and fifty dollars.
Speaker 3 (01:54:09):
Of course, will be all his, all yours, Paul. Do
you understand the rules? I do?
Speaker 39 (01:54:16):
Sounds great?
Speaker 3 (01:54:17):
Can can you hear me?
Speaker 20 (01:54:18):
Okay?
Speaker 3 (01:54:19):
I've got the Kingslander on Beyonce in the background.
Speaker 39 (01:54:22):
Yeah, I can hear you.
Speaker 18 (01:54:23):
Fine? Can you hear me?
Speaker 4 (01:54:24):
I've got your fine, Paul. Okay, here's the here's the
three options to choose from. All right, the short option
is the I'm sorry. Rest of New Zealand Special southmand
Canterbury Ranfurley Shield Canterbury to win thirteen plus.
Speaker 3 (01:54:38):
It's paying a dollar seventy two.
Speaker 4 (01:54:40):
You would win one hundred and eight dollars, So you're
betting on Canterbury to win thirteen plus.
Speaker 3 (01:54:45):
And the Shield Challenge that's the short one, okay, yep.
Speaker 4 (01:54:50):
The Evans is why on earth have you chosen to
watch this game's pitial? It's NRL Gold Coast against West Tigers.
Either team to win by under five four and a
half points or less. So you can have either team
winning by four and a half points or less. It's
paying four dollars. Winnings would be four hundred and fifty dollars,
So Gold Coast or Wests to win by less than five.
Speaker 3 (01:55:12):
That's the even bet, okay.
Speaker 34 (01:55:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:55:15):
And the long bet, the if I offered it to
you right now, would you take it? Special New Zealand
South Africa the drawer tonight paying eighteen dollars. If that
comes home, you would win two thousand and five hundred
and fifty.
Speaker 3 (01:55:30):
So those are the three Which of the three d
you like?
Speaker 36 (01:55:34):
Paul Well the Canobury man, you know, and it's hard
to go cast the easy one. But yeah, only up
once and so I think I'll go for the drawer
on the All Black cake.
Speaker 3 (01:55:46):
Oh, good on your Paul. It's like taking the high
offer on the chase. Well done mate, something like that.
Speaker 19 (01:55:51):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 36 (01:55:52):
I apologized to Ken Cabrian's because I'm all over there too.
Speaker 3 (01:55:57):
Good on your Paul.
Speaker 4 (01:55:58):
Hey, we'll place the bet on the draw tonight at
the end of the game between the All Blacks and
South Africa at Eden Park.
Speaker 3 (01:56:04):
If that happens, make two.
Speaker 4 (01:56:05):
Thousand and five hundred and fifty dollars coming your way
here to see the tab all the best dre mate
and well, it would certainly keep that Eden Park record alive,
wouldn't it.
Speaker 3 (01:56:14):
And he's going to place the bet for you.
Speaker 4 (01:56:15):
We'll keep our fingers crossed and we'll do it again
next week thanks to our mates at the tab. As always,
please bet responsibly. It's fourteen away from three. The ran
Fury Shield is on the line and in the cargol
this afternoon five past four, with Canterbury coming to town
to try and rest it away from Southland who themselves
(01:56:35):
took it off White Cuto a week ago. Who are
Tamadiki is Southland CEO and also won the Shield of
Nine with the Southland Stags. Who are I hope you
can em be Okay, I'm in a pub in the.
Speaker 3 (01:56:46):
Middle of Auckland. But how's your weathering in the cargo?
First of all, there.
Speaker 37 (01:56:51):
Mate, Hey, at the moment the sunshining, it's beautiful, the
lights are on though it's it gets stuck down here
pretty early, but at the moment it's looking good.
Speaker 3 (01:57:01):
So you've had to shield. You've had the Shield in
your region for a week or so.
Speaker 4 (01:57:05):
Have you managed to I'm not saying it's going to
depart anytime soon, but if you have managed to get
it around the traps a little.
Speaker 6 (01:57:11):
Bit this week?
Speaker 37 (01:57:13):
Yeah, absolutely mate. We've we let we let the team
for the first two days we got it down here
in the Deep South and then we've wrenched it off
and the union hares and we've we've activated it across
the community over sort of Wednesday Thursday Friday, so thousands
of south and has been able to touch it and
then basking its glory and enjoy it while it's here.
(01:57:33):
You know, we were guaranteed it's here this week, and
it's nothing's guaranteed in this competition that's so close. So
no I'd love to have it for another another week,
that's for sure.
Speaker 4 (01:57:43):
I guess I would have brought back memories for you
when you want it back in O nine.
Speaker 3 (01:57:47):
But did it still surprise you? Just how how special
this this log of orders to Rugby fans?
Speaker 37 (01:57:54):
Well, yeah, it did a bit mate, to be honest,
like we it was. It was such a great such
a great time for the region back in O nine
when we managed to bring.
Speaker 18 (01:58:03):
It, bring it home.
Speaker 37 (01:58:04):
But it just reminds, just reminded me that so special
that sort of trophy is if you are if you're
able to if you're able to lift it and bring
it back to a small region like ours. You know,
our people walk a little tall and we smile a
little wider for as long as it's here. So it's
been awesome.
Speaker 4 (01:58:24):
What so crowd are you expecting there this afternoon? Are
you going to be close to capacity at Rugby Park?
Speaker 37 (01:58:30):
Yeah, we'll get I think we'll get close. We we're
tracking almost identical to how we were a stag day
and we were close.
Speaker 18 (01:58:37):
You know, we filled the brim there.
Speaker 37 (01:58:39):
So we're hopeful this weather, as long as it stays out,
we might get a few more walk ups. But I don't,
to be honest, I don't. I don't really know if
the sun being out and they no wind is going
to be all that helpful for us.
Speaker 18 (01:58:51):
We'll see how it goes, all right.
Speaker 4 (01:58:53):
And of course Waikato themselves had it for a week
after winning it off off Taranaki, and I just wonder.
Speaker 3 (01:58:59):
I don't.
Speaker 4 (01:59:00):
I don't know whether this is true or not, but
whether they celebrated a bit hard at the front end
of that week and and their preparation fell behind.
Speaker 3 (01:59:06):
Have you have you made sure that your boys haven't
had too much celebration.
Speaker 4 (01:59:09):
Or if they have, they've worked extra hard sort of
Wednesday through to today to work it off.
Speaker 37 (01:59:15):
Yeah, it's always the risk, isn't It's it's you sail
about pretty hard when you get it. But no, we
were our boys. We you know, we celebrated it as
you shouldn't, very sort of the first night that we
that we got it and then brought it back, celebrated
with the community. But from Tuesday onwards they're back into
their work and cleaning of energy later on in the
week so that they should be should be all flushed
(01:59:37):
and ready to go and excited about defending it.
Speaker 4 (01:59:39):
Absolutely right, well, I think I think i'd probably speak
on behalf of everybody in New Zealand apart from those
people who live in christ Church. When I say that,
I hope it stays with you beyond six o'clock tonight
and on for the next couple of weeks. So I
hope it's a great day for your maid and all
the best and hanging on to that precious piece of wood.
Speaker 37 (01:59:57):
Yeah, no, thanks very much mate, and appreciate having you on.
Speaker 3 (02:00:00):
You on your so now good on you. Who are
great to have you on? Mate?
Speaker 4 (02:00:03):
Who are Tamadi Ki Southland Rugby CEO there as his
side looks to defend the log of what against Canterbury
this afternoon. That game is underway at five past four,
so a really really interesting game. The shield does funny
things to people. I've said that before, both in a
positive and a negative sense. South Ender paying five dollars
(02:00:25):
twenty five now to defend five twenty five, So those
odds have come out even further. Canterbury a dollar fourteen?
When has a ramfully shield holder ever been that long?
Five twenty five? When's the shield holder ever been paying
five dollars twenty five? Yes, Canterbury have had a good season.
Yes they're unbeaten, but as I say, it's the ranfully
(02:00:48):
shield and when that log is on your sideline at
your house, funny things happen. Funny things happen. Nine and
a half away from three, we're back at the Kingslanders
shortly to wrap the show.
Speaker 1 (02:01:03):
Live from the Kingslander in augmentade of the Old Lags
vs Africa Weekend Sport with Jason Pine and GJ Gunnos,
New Zealand's most trusted home builder on your Home of
Sport News Dog.
Speaker 3 (02:01:15):
Sev coming up. Six away from three.
Speaker 4 (02:01:18):
That's about us today and I think it's probably quite
a good thing because if the show eats any longer,
I fear that we would be drowned out, absolutely drowned
out by the noise levels which are going to increase
here over the next three or four hours.
Speaker 3 (02:01:30):
Before kickoff, a couple of thank.
Speaker 4 (02:01:32):
You it's huge thank you to Steve and his team
here at the Kingslander for having us. It's been amazing
about us. Soak up some of the atmosphere here. Steve
is an absolute legend of a man, big guy, big handshake,
real publican massive smile and mixing with the punters here
who are enjoying themselves ahead of this game. It's a
huge thanks to Steve and his team at the Kingsland
(02:01:53):
of having us tonight after the game back on the
air for some post match talkback. A build up begins
at six, commentary from seven and then some postmatch reaction
on the phones after that through until ten o'clock when
from our Travis will take over with in My Day
and then tomorrow of course on weekend Sport between midday
and three we will break it all down for you,
(02:02:13):
so all of the best postmatch reaction you'll find on
news talks. He'd be both after the game tonight and
tomorrow between midday and three.
Speaker 3 (02:02:22):
Huge thanks to you for listening.
Speaker 4 (02:02:23):
In and a massive vote of thanks to any McDonald
for pulling the show together and for dealing with all
of this noise.
Speaker 3 (02:02:31):
Have you got a quiet song to go out? I
can't hear a thing, mane, I didn't. Are you asking
me for a song?
Speaker 17 (02:02:37):
Go on?
Speaker 46 (02:02:38):
I've got one from actually the year ninety four, the
last time the All Blacks lost to Eden Park. It's
from the film The Lion King, which hadn't even come out. Actually,
it's a circle of life. So it's sort of ninety
four plus African themes. There we go at all links
together nicely, doesn't it It does.
Speaker 3 (02:02:58):
Thanks again mate, see you guys tomorrow.
Speaker 11 (02:03:55):
I'm a fair I'm the same, Sirve.
Speaker 1 (02:04:20):
