Speaker 2 (03:09):
All Blacks couldn't have wanted for a better start, could they?
With them on another were scoring a try early well Jordan.
Shortly after that fourteen nil they were up, but South
Africa came back as they always do. All Blacks twenty
four South Africa seventeen. All Black's assistant coach Tamothy Ellison
is with US Tarmody, congratulations on the win. That's why
I think they call them test matches because they do
(03:30):
test every member of both sides. What stands out first
of all in general terms when you think back to
the performance the all Black spot on last night, our.
Speaker 6 (03:40):
Physical, super physical from the start, and yeah, it didn't
really change because those gritty performances to hang in the
all the way to the end.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
What were you proudest of as a coaching group?
Speaker 6 (03:55):
I think the leaders just the way they lit on
the field in Fisher moments. They stood up there really
clear around what they wanted to do, and they drove
the week and they drove the efforts out there.
Speaker 7 (04:08):
To start with.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
At twenty four seventeen ahead Ardie Savie wants to turnover
penaly Right at the end, you must have thought you
had it won, but somehow South Africa got the ball
back and came again. How are the emotions then right
at the end as they as they had ball in
hand and you had to repel one more attack.
Speaker 6 (04:26):
Yeah, I mean, believenit more clinical than a couple of
areas there to start with.
Speaker 5 (04:32):
Bowie.
Speaker 6 (04:33):
We back our defense and the efforts the boys that
keep getting up and keep showing up for their mate.
So yeah, definitely made it an eighty minute performance for
the crowd, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Indeed, indeed, how much did the rain, which wasn't really forecast,
I don't think how much did that affect things in
terms of the slippery ground, the slippery ball, just.
Speaker 6 (04:54):
Just the obvious, you know, whether it be I think
the thing when the rain comes and goes, even once
it's gone, it's still left on the ground, on the ball,
on the jersey. So you're really playing in the in
a game that has rained, where it's raining at the
time or not, so you have to adapt to those
conditions pretty quick.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Over sixty kicks in play last night across the two teams,
many of them box kicks. A lot of chat about
the aerial battle. How do you evaluate how the All
Blacks went in the air last night?
Speaker 6 (05:24):
Yeah, I think the intent was really good. You know,
you saw the money, you know, flying into the air
there at the start. Just just the intent to want
to really compete in the air. I thought there was
a shift there.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
How big a part of your brief as a coach
is the aerial games.
Speaker 6 (05:43):
It's a handover, you know, from the attacking side. Of
the board to the d So it's critical that we're
aligned on where those kicks are going and then looking
forward to putting pressure on the air and then the
ground once this kicks is center. It's a massive part
of the transition part of the game.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
What are the key what are the really important parts
of being good defensively in the air? Because I think
we all knew that you know the bombs were coming,
are you obviously dead? How do you best strategize to
deal with them?
Speaker 6 (06:15):
I think some of that skill set getting high in
the opposition, timing you jump and making sure you're the
highest in the air with it. That's with your knee
or with your hands. So skill set's important, but it
really comes down to being fearless in the air. It's
just the person who wants to get up in the
owner as normally the person who gets the ball or
will gets the best part of the scraps. Anyway, So
(06:37):
I thought we were really good deal with the unten.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
How much is the changing rules and that you know
you basically can't block runners in any any way, shape
or form. Now, how much has that change things?
Speaker 6 (06:48):
Yeah, I don't think that's made the air any safer
to be fair, like a it's a collision in the
air now, So while those are the rules, you know,
we're definitely pay by the rules and make the best
out of it, but you know, the protection for the
man in the air, there's not a lot there, so
as it stands, we play where it leaves.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Artie Savia became the latest All Blacks Test centurion last night.
They were celebrated on the field after the game. How
do you celebrate that sort of milestone Internally?
Speaker 6 (07:22):
Artie had his fun out here yesterday. You know, his
big brother. It was just great to bring them inside
the team environment and they had had their own little
thing as well, so it was just great to have
his parents and and sas and the kids and everyone here.
So I think, you know, we all just sit back
(07:43):
and in all of Bavardi and their family and how
well they've done and how much Shee've given to Musan rugby.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
Do you remember the young Ardie Savia who you played
against at the back end of your own career.
Speaker 6 (07:58):
My memories of Artie was his brother, to start with,
playing with it and against Julian and then hearing it
there's a there's another savior coming and he and he
might be better. So I actually heard about him before
I ever met him, and you know the proofs in
the putting.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Scott Robinson said during the week he is a man
a few words and you know, humility is obviously a
quality we can all see in Ardie Savia. How deep though,
is his influence in the playing group.
Speaker 6 (08:27):
It's messis it's action based on the field. It's obvious
off the field. You know that that leader who's he's
got a shoulder for younger players, but he also keeps
standards for everyone else. So he's massive and I'm talking coaches,
management players to see influence he has. And I think
(08:47):
everyone in this group would do anything for odds and
we're just special that we could get over the line
for him.
Speaker 8 (08:54):
Last night.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
At the other end of the scale, you had a
test debutant last night and half back Kyle Preston, this
has I think come quicker than he could have possibly imagined.
How has he conducted himself across the week?
Speaker 6 (09:05):
Yeah, I think KP is really consistent in his habits
and that's probably what's got him here and what will
keep him going is he's super diligent. He's head down
and they think He's always been that way, so yeah,
you don't hear a lot out of him, but he's
into his work, and not just as a younger person,
it's just the way he's always gone about his business.
So replica to get out of there last night.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
No yellow cards last night? Was discipline a specific focus
given the yellow cards you've been handed in the last
couple of games.
Speaker 6 (09:37):
It always is, you know, we're trying to be as
safe as we can, but aggressive as we can as well.
If you're on the sideline, you see the impact of
the collisions and sometimes you know, people get them get
them wrong. It's both sides of the ball. Sometimes it's
a leading head from a ball Cary can, you know.
So it's always a focus. We're always trying to upskill
(09:59):
and be better in the collisions, you know, a week
on week and we're really genuine about that prep.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
Did you feel extra pressure ahead of this game, given
the enormity of the occasion, the loss in Argentina, the
Eden Park record to protect. Was there an extra edge
about this week?
Speaker 6 (10:18):
I think there was always going to be an extra
edge with the spring box and and Eden Park, and
you know, conciding without these hundred there was also an
extra edge. I'm not sure the pressure changes. I think
if you really clear around your process, you know, the
(10:39):
peaks and the valleys of the game. My job try
and make players better, so you know, wake up this
morning and it's the same process for me around how
do I make them better? So yeah, there was edge.
I'm not sure there was unnecessary pressure.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
And in terms of the players themselves, is there any
need to ensure they don't play the game before the
game arrives? If you know what I mean? Again, so
much hype. You know, it's a long week and many ways.
Is there any strategy needed in that regard?
Speaker 9 (11:10):
I think so lot.
Speaker 6 (11:11):
We're very blessed with mc gill here. It's been here
a very long time. He knows how to menace the
energy loads of the week and it's got a great
feel for where the group is. At the same time,
you've got body Barrett and Cody, Taylor and Ardie who
have been here a long time, so they know how
to manage the group and the mindset and communicate with
(11:31):
the coaches around what's needed. So we're really well led
in that space.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
Do you still get nervous?
Speaker 9 (11:39):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (11:39):
Yeah, I do. I think that's a great part about it.
When you're not on that side of the line, the
nerves are they're meant to be there, and you know
the feeling you're so much meant to be there. It
means you care and you know even this morning and
going into the start of this week that they'll be
there as well, and it helps you go deep in
your preparation.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
All right, just to finish on to Wellington. Now, will
you do it all again next Saturday? That's that's just
the nature of elite international sport, isn't It is a
week enough to recover and then get your players ready
physically and even mentally to go into battle again six
days from now.
Speaker 6 (12:14):
Yeah, it has to be. I mean that's what what's
the monder of the Jusian expectation? So yep, we have
to make it work.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
Travel safe, Tamody, great to chat do you mate, all
the best. Congratulations on the win last night.
Speaker 6 (12:25):
Thanks Tony, appreciate the support.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
Thank you, no, thank you for you for taking the call.
Tamoty Tummoty Ellison, that assistant coach of the All Blacks
or one of you've heard his thoughts. I eight hundred
and eighty ten eight. You're really keen to hear yours.
You've given it the overnight test, as we say, you've
thought a bit about it. You've perhaps watched some highlights
or a replay today, done some reading, done, some listening.
Time to do a bit of talking. I eight one
(12:48):
hundred and eighty ten eighty lines are open. Anything at
all that stood out last night, anything you want to
pick up on mission. Accomplished, win, secured, fortress defended. So
tick those boxes. A fitting result and performance for Ardie
Savilla's one hundredth test, because when these milestones rolled around,
(13:10):
the last thing you want is to have the presentation
and the celebration afterwards having just lost the game of rugby.
So that was good that that didn't happen. That when
Ardie Savi went up there and received his cap from
Rico Yowani with all of his family and closest friends,
there was a special moment, but also he could feel
(13:33):
satisfied with the way the game had played out. There
was enormous pressure on this team this week, enormous pressure
and in particular on Scott Robertson. I saw him afterwards
down on the grass. I was down there doing some
postmatch interviews and I saw Scott Robertson and the look
(13:54):
on his face was clearly satisfaction, but I wonder if
there was just a bit of relief in there as well.
You don't want to be the coach who oversees the
end of the Eden Park unbeaten record. Someone's going to
be might even be Scott Robertson one day, but you
don't want to be that coach, especially when you've just
lost your last game in Argentina and being the coach
(14:17):
who oversaw a loss in Argentina for the first time.
So it just rarely felt as though the pressure ramped
up on Scott Robinson and his coaching staff and his
players during the week and they responded in the best
possible way. They won the Test match. Standouts couple for
me Artie obviously had to go past the man who
(14:39):
brought up his hundred and secured that vital turnover at
the end, although South Africa then got the ball back
and had another crack at it, but I thought Artie
was superb. I did think though, that this was a
massive test in the captain c arc of Scott Barrett.
I thought he was monumental out there last night in
(15:01):
all facets of the game. I think he lost one
line out, but other than that he was great at
set peace. He made his tackles good and the loose.
But also you can tell from the sideline how much
influence he has on that playing group. Scott Barrett's a
guy a few words in a media session or in
(15:22):
any any other place apart from the rugby field. But
watching from the sideline last night, he is constantly talking
Scott Barrett. He's geeing as players up, he's making a point.
I also thought last night he had a lot more
to do with the referee. So I just wonder whether
last night might be quite a pivotal Test match and
the captaincy career of the All Blacks of Scott Barrett.
(15:44):
Those are just a few of my thoughts. You'll have
them as well. Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty
Hello Dallas.
Speaker 10 (15:50):
Knee, Yeah, we those Barrett boys.
Speaker 11 (15:54):
That's so good.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
God bless Smiley, God, bless Smiley Barrett. That's all I
can say, Dallas for siring so many bloody good rugby players.
Speaker 10 (16:03):
It's just amazing. Hey Tiney, I want to thank you
for your pre match stuff yesterday. That was fantastic build
up that you gave us.
Speaker 8 (16:11):
And it also, you know, we got.
Speaker 10 (16:13):
Through the afternoons listening to you know, your stuff, and
that made it sort of made the time go better.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
A pleasure. Look, I don't know about you. On a
before a big game like that, the time tends to drag.
You look at your watch and then you look at
it again, thinking an hour's gone past and three minutes
have gone by. So happy to help out.
Speaker 10 (16:37):
Yeah, but at least you thought it was good content,
So that was great.
Speaker 11 (16:40):
Hey, the game.
Speaker 10 (16:42):
So the hias, Now, as I understand it, when you
get an HIA, you go off and you have a
replacement come.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
On, right, Yes, well it tends to be I mean,
I agree with.
Speaker 10 (16:53):
These hias, but it tends to be a real circuit, doesn't.
You've got people coming and going.
Speaker 11 (16:59):
No one knows what is that? How you got the game?
Speaker 7 (17:03):
It was?
Speaker 2 (17:03):
It's here. And Elliott Smith, our lead commentator last night,
said after the game there were so many comings and
goings he was having a hard time keeping up with
it because you know, guys who had gone off were
coming back on. Cia Calisi was substituted. He came back
on at the end to you know, for I don't
know whether there was an hia, but he was certainly
back in the game. Jeordie went off at one point,
(17:25):
Wallace a TDI went off and Dupless Carnifi came on.
Then Dups went off and Wallace came back on again.
It was a bit of a it was a revolving door.
It does make it a little bit hard to follow someone.
Other thing, Dallas is I don't think these players when
they when they're told they've got a goal for an
h I A both Jordi Barrett and Wallace a tit
looked very confused that they were the ones who had
been singled out. But it's all done on this mouth
(17:47):
on the smart mouthguards.
Speaker 10 (17:49):
Okay, right, No, I'm not saying it's a bad thing,
you know, I think it's a good to air on
air on the side of the caution, but it just
does make it for a just jointed game. I don't
know what we do about that.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
But yeah, yeah, Dallas, it's it's I think I think
you're right on the side of caution. And and you know,
those guys went off, had their hia, everything was okay,
they came back on. Glad you enjoyed yesterday too, mate.
We loved it. We loved bringing you the show from
the Kingslander jeep as they would have made some money
over the bar yesterday. Goodness me around lunchtime when we
(18:23):
were there, it was absolutely heaving. As I left the
ground last night and waited for an uber, it was
absolutely jammed in there and it was all the way
along New North Road, so the hospitality outlets of the
region were doing a roaring trade. Thanks for calling in,
dallis good to hear from you, mate. Hello Jason, Yeah, Hi.
Speaker 12 (18:42):
Before I talk about the on the field stuff, the
class of the spring Box you would have seen it,
you know, well well after the game had finished, to
the presentations, did you see what they did to Artie
Salvia all.
Speaker 9 (18:54):
That, the the you know, the year they made to them,
that was classy.
Speaker 12 (18:59):
Well, well after the you know we're talking when they
were starting to do the Ardie Severe you know it
was one hundredth game, all of the springbooks, some pretty
short stay there. You know, this is like, you know,
eighteen minutes later and they and they made a real
nice gesture, they did something, gave him something spring Box things. Anyway,
I just thought it was really classy. Even the way
you know, Russy Rasmus talked about the honesty of the
(19:21):
game in his interview with was you know a scope.
It was just it just showed the enormous respect both
of them have got for each other.
Speaker 13 (19:31):
I just thought that was real telling.
Speaker 12 (19:32):
But two weeks is a big difference in sport, mate Tony.
You know all the things we failed in Argentina, I
thought we were supreme at and we won the actual
aerial battle, not necessarily because we put more kicks up,
but our kicks didn't go under wasted. And you know Manland,
you know, was they were long and low. It put
(19:53):
them under pressure and we got more than fifty of
them back. We're in Argentina, I think we got zero
back off you know, off the off the aerial battle.
So so that was my big thing.
Speaker 14 (20:02):
I didn't expect it.
Speaker 12 (20:03):
I didn't think we were capable of it, but we
actually turned it into bit of a stringth you know,
we tuned a weakness in Argentina into string last night,
and that was so pleasing for me to see that. Yeah,
they'll do it to getting next week too, matey.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
Well, and look, the aerial battle last night was made
even more difficult for both sides by the weather. You know,
the rain swept and the balls like a cake of soap.
You're a bit unsure of your footing. I know, a
lot of guys came out without, you know, expecting the
ground to be as wet as it was, and just
after kick off, you know, as a heavy shower of
rain came across and all that water just sat on
the top of the grass, so guys were slipping and
(20:37):
sliding all over the place. So that makes it difficult
as well. But yeah, I was watching with such interest
Jason the box kicking in particular last night from the
All Blacks and where the chasers were, you know, if
they were there, and they were they're right, You're right.
They didn't win them all, but they won more of them,
and I think under defensive pressure. I thought the courage
shown by the likes of Damien McKenzie and Will Jordan
(20:59):
was what was really admirable.
Speaker 12 (21:02):
Hey, two other guys that got the signal out one
of them I'm always going on and I did it
gave him a real hard time after Argentina lost. Was
Rico Yuani. I thought, you know, not not for anything.
Magically did on the tack. But that that's Trey daving
tackle that he stopped, you know, that's that's that's gold.
I mean that's seven points contributed or saved. And the
(21:23):
other guy I thought from Lake Christie that was real.
White coached up for him to go, you know, to start,
and I thought he might have been a bit outmuscled.
Speaker 15 (21:31):
I was worried about it, but he actually was superb.
Speaker 2 (21:33):
So yeah, no, I totally agree with both. Jase, Yeah,
ricco you Onani holding up the man over the line
a crucial moment of the game. And I thought Finlay Christy,
given the fact that really he he is the fourth
choice half back in the minds of the All Blacks
coaches because they picked Roy Gard and hop them ahead
of him. I thought the fact that he fronted up
(21:55):
there last night, he showed the value of experience. For me,
wasn't phased by it. He's played big games before. Goodness me.
He played in the last Rugby World Cup final off
the bench. He had a very good game and I
was rapped to see a new All Black too. Kyle Preston,
come on, thanks Jakes. Twelve twenty nine, Henry Chris, please
hold that with you After this, the spear lines popped up.
(22:16):
They don't last very long. Oh eight hundred and eighty
ten eighty back in a moment on news Talks d B.

Speaker 2 (22:30):
Talks twenty eight Away from Mine. A lot of people
making the point that Wayne Smith's influence in the All
Blacks camp this week may have been telling. Absolutely. He
was on the grass last night as well, having a
deep conversation with Scott Robertson and surely some deep satisfaction
as well. Henry, Hello, mate, thanks for holding.
Speaker 11 (22:48):
Hey, Jason, no worries.
Speaker 14 (22:50):
Hey, I hope you draw.
Speaker 11 (22:51):
Yes, that rain was coming.
Speaker 2 (22:53):
It was, It was, and it wasn't even fore casts.
I didn't actually think, you know, not that you can
trust Auckland's weather. I had a jacket, thankfully, but man,
it just came sort of in from the south west
and drenched us all for a week while there.
Speaker 7 (23:07):
Lucky I was at home watching him with a cold
beer and thinks Dad, and he's getting so but.
Speaker 16 (23:13):
Hey, are you played massive?
Speaker 17 (23:16):
You know?
Speaker 18 (23:16):
He always does and suddenly Christie pay Well.
Speaker 19 (23:18):
But Scott Barrett, you know, there was the captain's knock.
Speaker 9 (23:22):
That was cricket.
Speaker 18 (23:22):
He would have made a sceney you know, he was
just you know, we've been waiting for us and he.
Speaker 2 (23:27):
Just he was just so good last night, Henry, I
could not agree more. I thought he was man of
the match. I thought he was herculean last night. And
it's funny you say that. You know, we've been waiting
a while for this. I think, you know, he hasn't
been a universally popular choice as captain. I think a
lot of people, you know, look around that All Blacks
team and say there are other candidates who perhaps you
wear the armband. But what I saw last night from
Scott Barrett was the reason why he is the captain.
(23:50):
He's highly respected in that team and on his day
or on his night, which last night was, he is
one of the best lock forwards in the world. You know,
it was just he was just good.
Speaker 15 (24:00):
It was just, you know, it was just perfect. You know, Hell,
I hope you were a warm jagger next week.
Speaker 11 (24:05):
Made is that you're home down, didn't we?
Speaker 9 (24:07):
Bloody gold.
Speaker 2 (24:08):
I always come well prepared in Wellington, Henry. Good to
hear from your mate. Glad you enjoyed the enjoyed the
game from the safety Year couch last night, mate, Good
to chat to you. Hello, Chris.
Speaker 15 (24:18):
I think that the all Bleck's.
Speaker 20 (24:19):
Got it right with the loose trio Parker just his size.
Speaker 7 (24:24):
And I thought so TT having him back, very active.
Speaker 20 (24:27):
And aggressive, just like at Locke, he made a huge difference.
Those guys looked ready to take on set everyia. Another
thing I loved was the refereeing.
Speaker 7 (24:37):
He would let things go, there was no lead's stop
the whole game.
Speaker 20 (24:41):
For five minutes, go to the video ref and do
that sort of thing for an English referee offer. That
was fantastically refereed last night in a really scattered game.
Speaker 2 (24:51):
Yeah, a great Chris, although I do note I've been
having a look at some social media this morning, which
I probably shouldn't do. But a lot of South African
fans and maybe it's because they ended up losing the game,
not happy at all with Carl Dixon's performance last night.
I was like you, I thought he had a good game.
Speaker 20 (25:06):
Yeah, he let it slow, because how you know, all
that rugby these days seems to be We've always got
to stop the game, go up to the video with
we see the referee on the screen, sold ten minutes
of the game deciding on things that just didn't happen
last night. When one of the spring blocks picked up
McKenzie put him on the vertical. He didn't need to
(25:26):
stop the game and go back and look at it.
Speaker 13 (25:28):
He just let it play.
Speaker 2 (25:29):
Yeah, yeah, No, I liked him, Yeah, I liked him. No,
there's great points. Chris, what do you Oh, you've gone?
I was going to ask you what you thought what
might happen next week? That is also a topic of
conversation we can get into today. I know it's the
day after eden Park, but it's the start of a
new week, and Tamoty Ellison even said as much. Didn't
he wakes up this morning and starts planning for the
(25:51):
next game, and you're wonder. I mean, there will absolutely
be a response from South Africa. I think a lot
of people before South Africa arrived thought the series might
be split one one and a lot of people who
did think that thought that the eden Park test was
the one the All Blacks would win for a variety
of reasons. But South Africa might bounce back in the
(26:11):
second I've got a pretty good record in Wellington have
South Africa, but the All Blacks will have you know
in their sights a two nil win over South Africa
in this little mini series that retained the Freedom Cup,
which has played for between the two. If South Africa
won last night, they would have taken over the Freedom Cup.
I saw the night run down and it said if
(26:34):
South Africa win the game, they retained the Freedom Cup.
Because obviously the All Blacks can't can't win the series
and South Africa hold it, so the Freedom Cup is
up for grabs as well. Attention Piney A few thoughts.
Full disclosure. I didn't think the All Blacks would improve
enough to beat South Africa last night. I'm happy to
be wrong on that one. The intensity of both teams
(26:55):
and the intelligence by the All Blacks has not been
seen since the last Rugby Cup World Cup Final Absolute
Test match. What was the hia count? This text goes
on to say a record perhaps that reflects the intensity
and the intent of the match, but might be a
red flag to those who have contact sport in their
cross heirs. Finally, I've heard the word joy used a
(27:15):
lot to describe the Women's Rugby World Cup. I suggest
makeship for the men's game. To see both teams willing
to sacrifice so completely for each other for eighty minutes
and then come together after the game was inspiring. To
see Jesse Kleil and see a Kalisi acknowledge Artie but
also his children and family. Shows the respect and camaraderie
(27:35):
between these men. Expecting more of the same next Saturday.
I can't wait. Good text, adent ready, good text. And
there was some social media footage this morning I saw
of one of Ardie Savier's children running up to see
a Kalisi after the game and saying uncle, seea uncle
Sea and jumping into his arms. Thought it was a
very heartwarming moment.
Speaker 21 (27:56):
Hello Mark, good afternoon, buddy, How are you good?
Speaker 2 (27:59):
Thank you?
Speaker 5 (28:00):
That's good.
Speaker 21 (28:01):
Everybody so far put those exact same four players who
I thought were instrument alas night, even though Ricco didn't
get many opportunities on the wing. But yeah, that tackle
was brilliant.
Speaker 7 (28:13):
But I'd like to go back to before the game
even started. Gase Matt.
Speaker 21 (28:19):
Singing of the national anthems was probably the best I've
ever heard for probably twenty years. Crystal Claire no screaming,
absolutely beautifully done for both national anthems.
Speaker 2 (28:34):
Yeah agree, yeah, agree. I'm going to find out because
I want to give credit to the right people. I
was sent the name. They were secondary school singers. I'm
going to get the school right. But I agree, I
thought it was spine tingling stuff.
Speaker 21 (28:48):
Oh have Pacifica Pacifica children's choir. I think they're called.
Speaker 2 (28:54):
We'll check and make sure we get it right, Mark,
because you know, yeah, it's funny, isn't it. Often the
conversation goes to the anthems or the harker or whatever
it is. But no, it was good last night, really
was good man, Mark, Thanks for calling through us always.
I eight hundred and eighty ten eighty. For the first time.
We've got a spare line if you want to use it.
(29:15):
I eight hundred and eighty ten eighty who stood out
for you last night? I got a bunch of texts
here which I can get to, but keen to hear
your thoughts. There was pressure, massive pressure on this team
after what happened in Argentina. They were fully aware that
they let themselves down in the last test. They didn't
(29:37):
do themselves justice. They made a lot of errors. Their
discipline was no good After that test, I think, as
I said on the radio, maybe a day or two afterwards,
there was a lot of overreaction, if I'm honest, from
a lot of people who seem to think the sky
was going to fall in just because we've lost one game.
You balance that, of course, with you know, wanting to
(29:58):
critique this side and being absolutely within our rights to
do that. This is our team, the All Blacks. When
they don't play well, we are allowed to protect them
without actually, you know, going a little bit sort of
crazy and calling for heads left, right and center. The
All Blacks well aware of their shortcomings in Bueno series.
(30:21):
I think they did a lot last night to to
overcome some of those. I thought they were better in
the air. There's still some work to do there. I thought,
you know, that they were physical and their discipline was
certainly better. Not a yellow card to be seen for
an All Blacks player. Caugas Smith got one No one
from the All Blacks. Andrew Hea.
Speaker 18 (30:42):
Just a couple of points from last night's game. I
was lucky enough to be at the game. Everyone's saying
here Roll Scott Bert and Adisavieray and both disagree. However,
I thought Simon Parker was nic really when probably a
new second.
Speaker 2 (31:02):
Games, second test yet bang On, what a.
Speaker 18 (31:07):
Beast, and I thought it, Yeah, you kind of backed
up Ali and yeah, had a fantastic game.
Speaker 2 (31:13):
Yeah, and I was. I was really pleased for him
to Andrew. You know, he that the All Black selectors
really like Simon Parker. If they had the opportunity to
pick him against France, they would have. He was injured
a course at the back end of the Super Rugby
season and couldn't play against France, but they were very
keen to get him in there. And you know, I
also thought and be interested to hear what you think
(31:33):
on this. I thought they were all in on Tupai
at number six. I thought they had decided he's the
number six. But back into the second row where he
played well again and Simon Parker big body. I thought
the loose Trio Parker savit. I really liked it.
Speaker 18 (31:49):
Yeah, No, it was awesome.
Speaker 3 (31:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 18 (31:51):
I thought it was quite brave to put Tupu in
it to help out mister Barrett in the second row,
especially after well how well Fabian Piland played and the
few tests prior to that. So it was quit a
brave move and haven't certainly paid off.
Speaker 2 (32:09):
Good thoughts Andrew, well made, mate, Thank you for calling through.
Call back any time nineteen away from one back with
more of your thoughts after this on weekend sport here
on news talks, he'd be the big issues on and
after fields.
Speaker 1 (32:22):
Call oh eight hundred eighty ten eighty weekends Forward with
Jason Fain and GJ. Gunner homes New Zealand's first trusted
home Milder News.
Speaker 2 (32:30):
Talk d BB quarter to one. Darren says Pine was
at the game last night. Because there were so many
South Africans there, it was the loudest I've ever heard
another country's anthem at Eden Park. We responded with the
best crowd rendition I've ever heard of our anthem, including myself,
says Darren. Go the AB's great game. Good on you,
Darren y. It was sung with gusto. Both anthems were
(32:51):
the Auckland Secondary School's Pacifica choir sung the anthems. They
were tremendous, absolutely brilliant. Huge kudos Ian, Hi mate.
Speaker 22 (33:01):
Oh good at Jason. Yeah, I'd like to endorse that
about the anthem, but I thought I what they sang
the South African one more professionally they did the second
they were trying to do a few variations with ours,
and itn't didn't seem to come off quite as well.
I thought that South Africa was absolutely beautiful. But anyway,
on the subject of South Africa, their strengths and what
(33:22):
we need to be worried about going forward. You know
that kitchen sink called Quago smith Man. When he comes on,
he's almost unsoppable.
Speaker 2 (33:33):
Isn't the force of nature? Absolute force of nature? In fact,
it was quite handy. He got yellow carded you it was.
Speaker 22 (33:40):
Indeed, I was worried when I threw him back on
the field of Oh, I watch out, and we're going
to need a We're going to need to do a
little bit of work on that area in that area,
because they know they pushed us off the ball a
couple of times, didn't they as well? So I don't
know whether that's technique or strength. It's probably technique, I
(34:00):
think so.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
And yeah, I know the scrum you're referring to, because
it was so I care they just walked over the
top of us and got a tight head, which is
so rare these days. And top level rugby and it
led to it led indirectly to a tribe. I'm not
sure if you heard during the week, but the All
Blacks were actually training, the eight who were starting the
(34:22):
test were training against ten man scrums, so just to
get ready for the physicality that South Africa would bring.
They certainly they got a big shove on on that one.
But I think, like you say, it's probably technique as
much at it as it is brute strength.
Speaker 22 (34:37):
And also I think the slippery underfoot. I think if you,
if you're smart and you picked the moment you can,
you can you can get a great advantage if you
if you hit, if you hit it before they're ready.
Speaker 2 (34:49):
Absolutely right, good, good observations in and let's let's see
what happens next week. That's the other exciting thing. We
get round two in six days time. Hey, Scott.
Speaker 9 (35:00):
A Piney just just.
Speaker 23 (35:01):
One point mate, and it goes off to Razor for
faith in finlay Christie to have the third rate half
back on. I thought he did an amazing job. And
then to have faith and bring in sorry, the reserve halfback.
His name eludes me.
Speaker 2 (35:18):
Yeah, Kyle Preston. Kyle Preston, yep, Yeah, With twenty.
Speaker 23 (35:22):
Minutes to go and have faith in him. He could
have stayed with Christie and he would have done the job,
but to have faith in him to play twenty minutes
at that critical point of the game was awesome.
Speaker 2 (35:32):
Yeah, it could well be a seminal moment for Kyle Preston.
You're right, though, Scott. You know phil Ay Christy at
best the fourth choice half back at the start of
this year. I've said this. You know, Razor picked three
others ruped to a roy Guard host them ahead of them,
so he knew in the coach's mind he was only fourth,
but I thought he was.
Speaker 13 (35:49):
You know.
Speaker 2 (35:49):
Yes, he got into a couple of scraps at the
base of rucks and a couple of his kicks weren't
quite as accurate as he probably would have hoped, But
I thought I thought he gave a good account of himself.
And Preston coming on icing on the cake in a
debut for that kid too.
Speaker 23 (36:04):
Yeah, totally mate. So I look forward to seeing those two.
I have another own next week hopefully.
Speaker 2 (36:10):
Yeah, good stuff, Scott, I do too. I think what
it does also is it means you don't really have
to rush courtiez Well after my back. If he's not right,
you say, okay, well you know we've got Christine in Priceton.
No need to necessarily rush back a guy who's got
a band to the rooms.
Speaker 24 (36:24):
Hey, Pete, okay, Bonnie, it's a bit of a stressful
game last night.
Speaker 2 (36:32):
It was Pete here. The news were jangling, mate, ah.
Speaker 24 (36:37):
And some way just shouldn't say they were lucky to
pull it off at the end. So they came back fighting.
But just regarding the with the kicking last night, I'm
pleased that Raiser didn't give boy you the kicking game
last night. I didn't play that good with the art detainers.
It cost out the game that he knows that. Then
(36:58):
he gave it to Geordie as well. So I'm pleased
that Damian's got his kicking shoes.
Speaker 5 (37:03):
Back on the year.
Speaker 24 (37:05):
Yes, I still reckon. You might not like I stay here,
but I still reckon. Dane mckenj is still a more
consistent kicker than my boat. And that's just my point
of view.
Speaker 2 (37:14):
No, pet I don't. I don't mind that point of
view at all. In fact, I think you the stats
would probably back you up. So yeah, it's just I
guess it's getting them both on the same side. You know,
Damien came on last night earlier than everybody expected because
of the injury to Emany Nadaway, and that just happened
to be, you know, handy from a kicking point of view.
You're right. It was a really interesting comment made by
(37:35):
Body during the week about his kicking in Argentina, and
it was a bit it was a bit cryptic. He said,
I had an issue which I'm not willing to go into,
about my kicking, and I don't know what that is.
If he's carrying a knock, I don't know. But yeah,
but Jordie and then Damien, Yeah, kicked the points last night,
which which proved to be pretty.
Speaker 24 (37:54):
Crucially But even Damien the I don't care. He's a
tough little bug of that guy. I give them full credit. Ye,
he's out and about and he's not scaring those high
tacking He's a little weed. End of the day. That
many a strong You can't kill him.
Speaker 2 (38:07):
Love it, Pete, love it, mate. What a great analogy. Yeah,
And and him climbing. I remember one specific incident last
night when he climbed into the air and Tarmody Ellison
backed it up. You know you've got no protection up there.
Now you're up in the air and guys are closing
in on you, and you know you're going to get
it as soon as your feet at the ground. Very courageous,
I thought last night under the high ball, Damien McKenzie. Chris, Hello,
(38:30):
how are you good?
Speaker 13 (38:31):
Mate?
Speaker 7 (38:31):
Good?
Speaker 17 (38:33):
You got a lot to talk about.
Speaker 7 (38:34):
But guess I'm just my biggest confusion is this.
Speaker 25 (38:36):
Box kicking strategy where it becomes a big component now.
Speaker 14 (38:40):
With you know, territory.
Speaker 25 (38:41):
I just feel like it's such a lottery and you're
giving these guys not only positioned potentially that fifty to
fifty scenario. It just doesn't sit well for me in
terms of the game plan, and you know, the amount
of time's fin lay head to kick we get there,
so they needed it territory, but it becomes quite a
boring spectacle, and I just wonder, you know, what what
the what the Ethoughts sought their vision is around there?
Speaker 2 (39:04):
Yeah, Chris, it's a It's a topic we could talk
about for hours. The basic philosophy as you as you've
picked up on is that you know, you get a
bit of territory and you very rarely see them box
kick in the opposition half, don't you. It's when you're
in your own half your box kick you give yourself
a fifty to fifty chance. But that depends on having chases.
Speaker 1 (39:24):
It is.
Speaker 2 (39:25):
I think lottery is a good word, mate, and strategy wise,
I think we'll continue to see it because they'll roll
the dice and say, well, if we get better with
our chase and knock it back, then we do gain
the territory and we get the ball back, even though
it's not much more than a fifty to fifty proposition.
Speaker 16 (39:41):
Yeah, I hear that.
Speaker 25 (39:42):
I guess you know in terms of you know, the
coaching personnel. You know, at Tech Defense, we've got some
big boys there. So if we can hit some pods
and some back plays or just break that advantage line
from the ruck, I just think we've got more empetus and.
Speaker 2 (39:56):
More go for it. Yeah, Chris, even as you're saying it,
I'm nodding, mate, Absolutely, there are many ways to gain territory,
and the way you've just outlined keeps balling hand. So yeah,
it'll be interesting to see how they evolved.
Speaker 25 (40:08):
A Another one, Mate, was just the Argentinian game. So
it's you WoT a beast, mate. You know a center
who just continues to ask questions of the defense, and
you know he picked up a double last.
Speaker 11 (40:19):
Night, and jeez, he looks good.
Speaker 2 (40:20):
They're a good team, Chris, They're a good team. Can't
wait for the bled us though. Good to chat mate,
Thanks for calling again. Seven to one News talks EDB.
Speaker 1 (40:27):
The Scoons from the track, field and the court on
your home of thought Weekend Sport. Where's Jason Vine and
used TALKSB.
Speaker 2 (40:35):
For one more All Blacks content for you after one
o'clock Jill International for the All Blacks and the Keiwi's
Fronto Bottican. Haven't it Fronto on the air for a while.
I have a chat to him about the game, what
he saw, what he picked up on. Many more of
your calls as well, not everybody I know we could
get on the air in the last hour. We do
appreciate you giving us a ring. We'll try and get
as many of you on the air as we can.
(40:55):
After one o'clock, Arna says on text, I just love
the whole match. Notable for me, the brilliant early tried
from Rookie and Morning Nadawa Artie's celebration, Scott Barrett's leadership
and the wonderful Pacifica choir. I also love the intense Hacker.
The whole thing was pure class says are it? Thanks
All Blacks? Eden Parkard? This save here, the Pacific acquired
the spring box and all the fans couldn't agree more
(41:15):
that there was a buzz in there last night. There
was a helpable buzz inside that ground, helped largely by
the number of South African fans who really bought into
it before during it. I'm sure after the game news
next to one.
Speaker 1 (41:29):
The only place to discuss the biggest sports issues on
and after fields. It's all on We James Ford with
Jason Paine on your home of sport.
Speaker 2 (41:41):
A new talks b this this weekend sport. As the
man said, I'm Jason Pine and McDonald's show produced to
were Hit till three talking rugby for most of this hour.
James mcconey at the back end his thoughts on the
All Blacks but also other matters too. Pronobodica shortly, but
your calls and correspondence to what we're after. Not everybody
could get through. Last out seems to happen the day
(42:02):
after an All Blacks test happens more of us an
All Blacks test loss. But lots to talk about, lots
to like from last night. We'll get back to your
calls very very shortly. I want to talk some Warriors
after two o'clock as well. A pleasure to welcome in
one of very few dual internationals for the All Blacks
(42:24):
and the Kiwi's North Harbor rugby legend. Twenty seven games
for the All Blacks during one of our most successful
periods back into the eighties. Then over two hundred top
level games of rugby league for Wigan, the Warriors, Castleford,
several games for the Kiwis as well. Fron o'bodica, how
are you mate?
Speaker 12 (42:43):
Very good?
Speaker 5 (42:43):
Thanks?
Speaker 2 (42:43):
Were you involved in a All Blacks reunion of sorts
over the last few days?
Speaker 16 (42:49):
I certainly was.
Speaker 7 (42:51):
Yes, it was very good too.
Speaker 2 (42:53):
That's gonna say. How were the stories? How are the stories?
And who was telling most of them?
Speaker 7 (42:57):
Oh, Charles Reichelman likes to tell a few stories, you know,
He's always.
Speaker 5 (43:04):
Good for that.
Speaker 7 (43:05):
Otherwise we all reminiscent and stretched the stories.
Speaker 2 (43:08):
We all know brilliant love it. Just before we get
onto what happened last night that team, that All Blacks
team of the late eighties. You were led by Buck Shelford,
unbeaten from what eighty seven right through to the first
bit of nineteen ninety. What was it like being in
that team?
Speaker 7 (43:25):
It was amazing, you know. Look, I was for a
lot large period of that. I was always on the bench,
you know, but being part of it was awesome. Certainly,
wouldn't take it. I have fond memories or memories of
it which I won't forget, you know, you know, sure
I would have liked to have played more games, but
(43:47):
you know, it was a very competitive team with a
lot of good players who were sitting on the bench
as well, So he will never forget that.
Speaker 2 (43:59):
Yeah, I love watching that team. And as you say,
you just needed Grant Fox or pull a hamstring or two,
didn't you, and you would have got more games. But
watching those good to be very did deserved to be
in front of the Well. I think a lot of
people just like the way you played the game, and
we saw we saw it mainly on those those tours
where you played midweek games, and and yeah, we're just anyway,
we don't want to rumin us too much. You've been
(44:20):
doing that over the last week or so. So let's
move to the present day. What did you make of
the win last night by the All Blacks over the
spring Boks.
Speaker 16 (44:28):
I thought it was It's exactly what we needed.
Speaker 7 (44:31):
I think that most of us were of the same
opinion that it was going to be a tough game,
that was always going to be a close game, and
there would be some small mistakes that would cost either side.
Speaker 5 (44:43):
You know.
Speaker 7 (44:43):
Unfortunately, we got off to a fantastic start and managed
to hold on there, but then we also could have
lost it in those last few minutes and it wasn't
for our our savior of h Savia. You know, he
pulled out, he pulled something out of the out of
(45:05):
the bag by steal that ball, and you know, they
could have been a drawer.
Speaker 2 (45:09):
What do you make of box kicking? Fronto and teams
using it quite regularly?
Speaker 26 (45:15):
Now?
Speaker 2 (45:15):
A lot of our listeners are big fans of the
box kick? What about you?
Speaker 22 (45:20):
Nah?
Speaker 7 (45:21):
Nah, I'm not. It's not quite a bit. It's every time.
And obviously the spring boxer a lot better with the
ball in the end than we are, and they're probably
better than any other team in the in the world.
You know, there are a couple of times in the
game where I thought we you know, we got to
turnover ball. One was in our own twenty two and
(45:43):
they had like three or four big forwards out in
the back line and we had three backs behind the
scrum and a couple of backs out wider when we
and those are the sort of opportunities that we need
to look at, whether it's at that level or not,
and go, well, the chances of us breaking here are
pretty good, and if not then we'll get tackled, we'll
(46:05):
secure the triumph, secure the ball and the end kick it.
But but they should you know, this is my own opinion,
but they should actually look to have a go first
and if it's not on then then then try something else.
But yeah, I mean the French, for example, do a
lot of those little chip kicks. Body does it every
now and then and you know it's done well. They're
(46:28):
very effective.
Speaker 2 (46:29):
What about under the high ball as a as a
defender front o, you know you had to had to
field a lot of high kicks in both codes. What
what are the main things you need to do well
to be good as a defender under the high ball?
Speaker 7 (46:44):
Well, obviously you need to keep your eye on the ball.
It depends how much momentum you have coming into the ball.
If you're standing there and trying to jump, then the
person running at you and and jumping is always going
to get higher or add one more mean to vote
towards the ball than you are. So it's tricky, and
(47:05):
especially if you're a little follow it makes it a
lot harder. You've got a time it so that you
can run into it and jump as well.
Speaker 2 (47:11):
You know, you say you got to keep your eye
on the ball. It seems I would I would.
Speaker 7 (47:15):
Say, well, although I was I had the opportunity to
catch a number of balls, I wouldn't say I was
the greatest. We didn't practice as much as they do
these days to catch it, So I've got an excuse
I didn't practice as much fool fellers and these fellow's
got nothing else to do training except practice there and
a few other things.
Speaker 2 (47:37):
You must say, you keep it on the ball, that's
very good advice. But but when they when you got
guys hearing at you at you know, we're just waiting
for you to catch it hit the ground, and then
they're gonna bang hit you. You must have a wee
look do you to see these guys coming.
Speaker 7 (47:51):
You're the ones who have a wee?
Speaker 24 (47:52):
Look are the ones who drop it?
Speaker 5 (47:58):
Love it? Hey?
Speaker 7 (48:00):
I mean look, last night was hard. It was it
was flippery, you know, the rain came and we were
hoping that rate. I was yesterday morning sitting at home
and it was raining and I was going, if it
continues to rain, I don't know whether I'll be going
to watch the rugby. But it's cleared up, so our
minutes to get there.
Speaker 5 (48:17):
Good.
Speaker 2 (48:18):
It's good to have you there. Do you find yourself
watching more rugby union or rugby league these days?
Speaker 7 (48:24):
These days I watched I watch. I'm a bit of
a sports.
Speaker 2 (48:31):
Stuff, you know.
Speaker 7 (48:31):
I like to watch all sports. And because of that,
I watch.
Speaker 26 (48:36):
A lot of highlights twelve minutes, twelve and a half
minute highlights of most things, just because like otherwise, otherwise
you could spend the whole weekend sitting.
Speaker 7 (48:48):
In front of your TV watching you know. Yeah, so
I would say I watch. I watched the highlights of
the Warriors men and women, and then I watch probably
half of the ITM cap stuff. Obviously, I'll watch your blacks.
I watch any any gulf that are kiwis in I
(49:08):
watch the cycling, so I've got to feel a bit
to watch mate.
Speaker 2 (49:13):
Yeah do you say you could spend the whole weekend
on the couch as though that's a bad thing, you know.
Speaker 7 (49:18):
Oh well, you know the Missus gives me too about
nine o'clock, so I'm going to have editing for this
by nine and then you know, so you know I'm
under I'm under, I'm under pressure.
Speaker 2 (49:29):
Yeah, under the pone.
Speaker 7 (49:31):
I get over watching too much rugby or too much League,
you know. I just watched the key things.
Speaker 5 (49:37):
And this about it.
Speaker 2 (49:38):
Are you doing any coaching?
Speaker 26 (49:41):
No?
Speaker 7 (49:41):
No, I finished coaching two years ago. I just coached
for North Shore for abouteen years.
Speaker 2 (49:46):
So that was my That was enough for me. So
what are you doing to stay foot and active now.
Speaker 7 (49:53):
At the moment, I'm not a lot. I do do
a wind trainer in my garage and a few like
the missus waite realite little things and just do a
whole lot of high repetition stuff. But I was there
one for weights anyway, not my cupathy, I thought, you know, no,
I don't like gymsly went to gym. I only went
(50:15):
to gyms because I got told I had to stuff
as soon as I didn't have to.
Speaker 5 (50:19):
That was me done.
Speaker 2 (50:21):
What was it what you must have when you were
playing league though over in the UK? That would have
you had been in the gym a lot over there,
wouldn't you.
Speaker 27 (50:28):
Uh Yeah, yeah I was.
Speaker 7 (50:30):
I had to be and I had a you know,
I used to get pushed around by Shelford because I
was cheeky all the time. So when I got to Wigan,
Dean Bells, I remember him saying that you're pathetic when
I when I when I first went into the gym,
he said, you're pathetic, you're letting your country down. You
need a help. So he took me under his wing
(50:51):
and thrashed me in the gym so I could do
it properly.
Speaker 2 (50:55):
Good man, Well, I'm glad you have a great You've
had a great weekend. I'm sure the stories went long
until last night, and that you made the game as well.
A little bit of rain didn't keep you away from it.
Great to chat to your mate, I mean, honestly, I remember,
well those teams are the you know obviously baby Blacks
and then into the late eighties and yeah, I think
a lot of people wanted you to get more of
a crack than you did in that ten jumper. But
as you say, with Foxy there, it's a bit difficult,
but yeah, fun memory.
Speaker 7 (51:17):
I always wish I'd got a little bit more as well,
but you know.
Speaker 5 (51:21):
The way it goes.
Speaker 2 (51:22):
You just move on and good to chat to your Fronto.
Thanks for taking our call mate. Cheers Bunny, all the
best front of Bodica, the one and only. What a player, man,
what a player. He kind of redefined first five play
around that time, most first fives at that time. I'm
not telling you anything you don't already know. We're like
Grunt Fox, you know, and Grant Fox absolutely magnificent player,
(51:45):
don't get me wrong. But Fronto was just a bit
he was more. I guess it was the Carlos Spencer
before Carlos Spencer came along. He you know, you just
didn't know what he was going to do at first five.
You know, he was as likely to run as he
was to kick. If he saw something even a half chance,
he'd go for it. An interesting We're not interested, not
(52:06):
to surprise rising that he still thinks the same there is,
you know, have it, have a go, have a crack.
I know it's not always possible, but yeah, front of
Bodkin one and only one seventeen. All right lines back open, Oh,
eight hundred and eighty ten eighty. We'll talk All Blacks
rugby again for the next twenty minutes or so. James,
we'rekin't of going to draw join us. We're going to
shift across to Rugby League after two. So if you
(52:26):
want to get your thoughts across anything you saw last
night that caught your eye, if you couldn't get through
before one, we'd love you to give it a go now.
Eight hundred and eighty ten eighty whole hypotext coming through,
which I'll get to too. I just wanted to acknowledge
the Test debut last night of Kyle Preston, who came
off the bench and became an All Black. I spoke
(52:46):
briefly with Kyle after the game to see how he
felt about being a member of the All Blacks club. Now, Yeah,
pretty surreal to.
Speaker 28 (52:54):
Be in New Zealand, on home soil and up packed,
Aden Parkers.
Speaker 2 (52:58):
It's pretty special house. Your week been, It's probably come
quicker than you thought it.
Speaker 26 (53:02):
Mike.
Speaker 2 (53:02):
How's the week been for Kyle Preston? Yeah, for sure,
definitely come pretty quick.
Speaker 28 (53:08):
But I knew how to stay ready regardless, So yeah,
pretty special week. Loved every minute of it. And to
get in a game time pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (53:17):
And you got out there. Did it go fast? What
twelve minutes to fly by?
Speaker 29 (53:21):
Yeah?
Speaker 28 (53:21):
Oh the last five we're pretty slow to miss fair
under the pump only seven points up.
Speaker 2 (53:27):
Not too comfortable. So it was good and well the
first of were you hope many? But what's it been
like inside the environment? Has there been a lot of
support wrapped around you this week by these men alongside you? Yeah,
for sure.
Speaker 28 (53:40):
Everyone in those groups really willing to for me to
ask questions and yeah, pretty much anything I need I
can ask anyone and you're there to help.
Speaker 2 (53:50):
So yeah, everyone's pretty helpful. You were roofing a year
ago out of here an even park in one of
the biggest test matches. Man, congratulations, what a.
Speaker 24 (53:57):
Night for you.
Speaker 28 (53:58):
Yeah, chairs, thank you.
Speaker 2 (53:59):
That is Kyle Preston who became in All black last night.
What a special night for him and his family. JOSEPHS.
I went to the game last night. Pine. You've been
to a few tarts here up in the UK and Island,
but have to say it was a fantastic atmosphere. Sometimes
here in New Zealand, it can be a head and miss,
but the banter the build up to the match was
top draw. Of course, the game was epic, but a
shout out to all the spring Box supporters. They are
great value and heaps are fun and it's how test
(54:20):
matches should be. Joe, I could not agree more. And
the South Africans I met yesterday were, without exception, just
really good roosters, really good people who love rugby, love
the all Blacks, love the spring Box, and love a
battle between the two. Hello are you hello there?
Speaker 17 (54:37):
Jason? How are you today?
Speaker 5 (54:39):
Mate?
Speaker 17 (54:39):
I'm sorry I made a booboo a couple of weeks ago. Listen,
I just wanted to say the game was really, really
terrific last night. Made everything went well. You on the sideline,
you build up to the game, everything just perfect. Your
show is terrific, mate, I love it. I never stopped
missing every Saturday that turned on the radio. Jason's on
(55:01):
the thing and the game. As I say, with Ardie
and one or two of the other players, Scott Barrett,
they played well. I've always had a dig at Bowden
because of his kicking and stuff, but he played a
little different last night. And I enjoyed everything. Great show.
Everything's terrific.
Speaker 2 (55:19):
Mate, good on ye and I don't remember a booboo
you made mate, all views welcome on the showt that's
what you're referring to, but no great to chat to.
And I said to someone yesterday, I can't remember who
it was.
Speaker 5 (55:32):
Not that.
Speaker 2 (55:32):
That's the important part of the story that I can't
believe they let me do this job. I can't believe
that they parked me up in a pub four hundred
meters from Eden Park to do a build up to
a Test match between the All Blacks and South Africa.
I mean, you know, if I told eight year old
(55:53):
me that that's what I'd be doing, well, first of all,
eight year old me wouldn't have known what I was
talking about. But just feel so lucky, so fortunate to
get the chance to do it where it shed twenty
two again next weekend and Wellington ahead of Test two
between the All Blacks and the spring Box. Yes, your
pop down, George, come and say today.
Speaker 5 (56:12):
I think I.
Speaker 16 (56:13):
Certainly will piney after after last nights if it's in
hearing your show from from the Kingslander yesterday that was
that was amazing.
Speaker 2 (56:20):
Yeah, it was good fun.
Speaker 16 (56:22):
Yeah, definitely was. I know you had one hundred cools yesterday,
but I was. I was one of them saying I
couldn't see the All Blacks getting rolled last night and
that mindset say that was just that was just brilliant.
And you kind of compare that that intensity and that
that mental attitude in the Argentina.
Speaker 9 (56:40):
Game and it and it is.
Speaker 16 (56:43):
It is leaps and bounds difference. I think the big
challenge for the All Blacks now is how do they
try and keep that level of mental prep consistent. I
think in the in the last couple of years, the
times and they had frustrated us is in the stakes
are not as high, and they've put out some clunky
performances and does feel like there's a bit of a
bit of mental application there because you know, we've shine
(57:05):
in the quarter five and last night in South Africa
when Fozzy was under pressure that they can pull out
these performances, and I guess the Jeressey does demand those
week and week out, so it'll be great to see
how they back it.
Speaker 5 (57:18):
Up this week.
Speaker 2 (57:19):
Great point, George, because I think last night was one
of those, wasn't it. It was an occasion that demanded
that performance from the All Blacks almost a force higher
than themselves, you know, to just by any means possible
and any way necessary, win the game of rugby. And
you're right now. The very very intriguing part of this
will be how they play next week. What are you
(57:39):
thinking in terms of can you see any changes? You
reckon they'll roll out pretty much the same fifteen and
twenty three. I know another one might be under an
injury cloud, and Nook, I think Cody Taylor as well
with his hia might be might be under an injury cloud,
but injuries aside. Do you expect a similar team next week?
Speaker 5 (57:57):
I do.
Speaker 16 (57:58):
I reckon they'll go very similar in the forward pack
and Tubo Bay was outstanding, as was Simon Parker. I thought,
I do probably see them moving Jordan to the wing.
Just the options we have there, whether or not Rico
gets another goal on the wing or Caleb Clark may
well come in give him how he plays this weekend,
I thought, you know, that's always another option there, But
(58:22):
I do expect them to sort of a roll out
a similar team and ask those guys to go again.
Because that balance in the four pack was outstanding, and
I know you've talked about Scotti, Barrett, but I thought
Tupo v was just outstanding again last night and really
just stepped it up and wasn't intimidated at all by
the occasion.
Speaker 2 (58:42):
Yeah, he's become quite a player, hasn't eat two? Poor
v All right, George, hay mate, if you're in an
around that shared twenty two next week, if you need directions,
just get in touch, mate, and I'll guide you in
a very familiar with twenty two.
Speaker 16 (58:56):
Finey, don't you worry. So I may may well be
seeing you down there. It should be in a great game,
freedom cup on the line, so plenty to play for again, good.
Speaker 2 (59:04):
Man, George. I always love chatting, mate. Thanks vehicle to
Paul Vai. What a presence, says Nick. I haven't seen
that since Jerome Kinnor. The guy's a physical beast. Loves
getting stuck into the Niggli rucks. How many turnovers did
he have last night? How good bang on?
Speaker 5 (59:18):
Nick?
Speaker 2 (59:18):
And there was another text here from JERRR Jason. I
loved the ecstasy on Tupaul Vai's face every time he
got one over the opposition. He was loving it, by
the way. I could never see the English or Australians
making a presentation to an All Black on reaching one
hundred tests.
Speaker 5 (59:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (59:33):
Look, I think there's great respect for Artie Savia right
around the rugby world, but particularly in South Africa. He
and Sea Calisi are very very close and clearly hold
each other in huge regard, and I think that permeates
across the respect of rugby teams, even though they're not well.
Artie's not captain of the All Black Sea wasn't captain
(59:54):
last night, but I think there is a genuinely held
respect across the two sets of players. And I believe too.
And we've just talked about this across the two sets
of fans. You know, there was Look, I wasn't everywhere
last night, but there was. I didn't see a single
bit of Agro, a single but there was a lot
(01:00:15):
of friendly banter. When we were at the Kingslander yesterday
there were All Blacks fans mixing and mingling with South
African fans getting photos. It was it was just great.
And so this rivalry is is so fierce on the field,
but it is it's a connector of players and fans
from both countries, and yeah, I just think that's brilliant
(01:00:37):
one twenty six Goda Chris.
Speaker 15 (01:00:39):
Yeah, mate, you brought up a really good point. First,
I wanted to say I really enjoyed the show leading
up to the game that you put on when you
talk to Bobby Skinstead and Joel Strensky. It gave in
various other Shawn Firzspatrick, it gave us a little bit
of inspite to how they're thinking and then you know
(01:01:00):
how we want to go, and that built into the
game beautifully. What I liked about the ten matches they
played it so fierce both teams, but that niggle if
you watch the Wallabies play against South Africa or US
played against Argentina, there's always a push around, but it's
almost as the two teams don't want to fight each
(01:01:21):
other because we know we're too strong against each other.
You don't want to be the one that makes the
good relationship of your play the game fear. I enjoyed that.
That was the best test I've seen them two three
years from the All Blacks extensively.
Speaker 13 (01:01:38):
Oh my god, I had.
Speaker 15 (01:01:39):
Doubts after watching US play against Argentina and all of
our guys don't their jersey to keep their jersey there's
not one player I'd say, not swap him out. Everybody
played well, so I was proud of the whole team
and what they did yesterday that was a monster effort.
Speaker 2 (01:02:01):
Love it, Chris, great summary, mate, and yeah, I think
you're right they No one wants to to bring this
the storied history down. Really interesting comic yesterday. It seems
so obvious, but a couple of the South African fans
who stopped by yesterday at Kingslander. One of them said, look,
we can play our best game and still lose to
the All Blacks. That is how good the All Blacks are.
(01:02:24):
And I think that the reversals is also true. The
All Blacks could play their best game and still lose
to South Africa. They are without a doubt. I know
there'll be Irish fans and French fans and maybe the
old Australian fan who have designs on the top of
the rugby tree. But at the top of the rugby
tree there are two teams and they were there at
(01:02:46):
Eden Park last night one twenty eight. Mark and Ian,
please hold with you right after the spare line, we'll
talk rugby for a bit longer. James mcconey before two
o'clock as well.
Speaker 1 (01:02:55):
One Crunch Cold Ngage Weekend Sports with Jason Tame and GJ. Gunderholmes,
New Zealand's first trusted home builder.
Speaker 2 (01:03:03):
News Talk said be on i' thirty one, Runa says
on text, so I can remember you almost pooh pooing
the idea that you were broadcasting out of Emerson's when
you did the test, and Anita Runa, I cannot remember
poo pooing that at all. I absolutely loved it at Emerson's.
Maybe I don't know, maybe you misheard, but no, I
(01:03:25):
absolutely loved it down there as I have it shed
twenty two hours I did at the Roaming Giant and
Hamilton The King's Lander yesterday. These are wonderful places to
radio shows from. I would never cast dispersions on on
those fine establishments or the concept of doing a radio
show from there.
Speaker 11 (01:03:45):
Mark, I mate, Hey, Piney, I get the feeling you're
trying to do. We're broadcasting from tubs now, by the
way you're pushing that.
Speaker 2 (01:03:53):
I think, even if there's not an all blacks test,
maybe I just can't go and pack up somewhere.
Speaker 11 (01:03:58):
Every every weeknight on on the on ther show there
in seven. Oh, where's Piney. I'll be at the pub.
He'll be broadcasting from the park.
Speaker 5 (01:04:06):
U why not.
Speaker 11 (01:04:10):
Yesterday? I think for Razor you could see on his
face that it was probably his most important win and
it meant a lot to him. And it was really
nice to see Russi when they got that late penalty
and he just absolutely lost it because he knew that
was I think that was pretty much their last chance.
Speaker 9 (01:04:28):
That was quite place.
Speaker 11 (01:04:29):
That was quite a priceless bit of year watching there.
I thought d Mack at fullback was was actually really
good for most of you know, for the whole game.
I thought, I think maybe going forward that that maybe
to be an option. I thought Finlay Christie was absolutely
awesome to me, you know, it must have been hard
(01:04:51):
for him being the fourth cab off the rank and
the way he performed, you know, under that extreme pressure.
To me, i'd have him as my second behind came Roy.
God on, heaven's my second half back to be honest,
I'm last night's performance.
Speaker 2 (01:05:05):
Yeah, that's a very interesting point mark because I think
most people right at the start of the year, when
when the three half backs were named as Roy, Guard
MT and Hotham, everybody nodded their head. And I think
if Christy had been in those three then people would
have would have been ringing this radio show and saying,
what's he doing there? But I think he you know,
and he's a very unashuman guy, and maybe that's part
(01:05:27):
of the secret. Last night, I thought, like you, I
thought he was excellent, really good.
Speaker 11 (01:05:33):
It's a bit like Beaver, wasn't it getting getting the
call up the Old Cup when he was off white mating,
But I mean, yeah, no, I just thought he was terrific.
And I mean every game he's played for All Black.
So I think Christy he's really he's not he's not
phased by and he just he seems to be able
to perform under that pressure. And I think he outperformed
as as opposite. No, I don't think Pollard. You know,
(01:05:54):
there's a few players in the in the African team
now who are going to be a little bit too
old to me to get to the next World Cup,
you know, and I think Pollard might not be the
answer going forward to the next one. I thought he
was like a little bit, yeah, he looked a bit
tired here. I mean, he's a great kicker. He's probably
still the best kicker in world rugby, but years a
number ten. I don't know whether he's going to offer
(01:06:16):
enough going forward.
Speaker 2 (01:06:16):
Yeah, they'll they'll have a decision to make or Rassie
arrestmus Will and the others. Yeah, got on your mark.
Thanks mate, thanks for calling. And I've left out the
rock Pole. My colleague in christ Church, Nick Biorli, who
presumably has shares in the place, has messaged me to say,
don't forget the Rock pol where you're broadcast before the
Super Rugby Final. Yes, I shouldn't forget that. What a place,
(01:06:39):
greatest pub in christ Church.
Speaker 14 (01:06:40):
Helloeen, Hello pony. I just want to remind you used
to I was one of the first to call up
sort of thing. I would have thought you'd be hardy
in your little hardy Holgare and perro there after the chill.
Speaker 2 (01:07:00):
Well, I haven't got back home yet and I'm still
an autan. But no, I was actually funny enough made.
I was thinking of you when I was checking that score,
and I was thinking this isn't going very well for
my Wellington lines, but going very well for your Hawk's
Bay Magpies.
Speaker 7 (01:07:14):
Sorry.
Speaker 14 (01:07:14):
Mate, I couldn't help myself, but you know, it's a
former Wellington and I was born in Breaden Miramar, you know,
and all that sort of stuff. And I've played a
lot of sport at poor Jury corns Parke of course, yes,
but you know and I know you live it that
way and I was just thinking of you this morning,
but I couldn't help myself. I'm very sorry Jace to
(01:07:39):
say this, but we gave you such as the leaking
us today. It was not funny and you have to
go home tomorrow and go into your little hardy hole
and say to these people were here to get better.
Speaker 2 (01:07:55):
And I love it, mate. Yeah, and don't you ever
apologize for ringing up and saying stuff like this. This
is what because you know that when Wellington played Hawks
Bay next and Wellington ever when I'll be thinking of
you and asking Andy to track down your phone number
so I can send you a text. Absolutely please do
love it mate, good to hear from you, Ian love it. Yeah,
(01:08:16):
Hawk's Bay a big one over over Wellington yesterday. And
let's not forget the shield. The shield changing hands up
to christ yourtuld goes could be there for a while,
or could be there for a week. Tasman having a
crack next weekend. Hello, Ricardo, thy final you can hear
me a case?
Speaker 14 (01:08:33):
Yeah, fine, mate, excellent, Okay, it's probably just me.
Speaker 24 (01:08:36):
I'll probably be the most hated. But I'm not convinced
on that, Bully Proctor.
Speaker 19 (01:08:41):
I'm not convinced. I haven't been watching the Obrex for
some time, but I just feel like we're missing a
robust thirteen. Uh yeah, just to straighten up their back line.
I was watching him. I haven't been watching for some
time the All Blacks, but just watching him, he seems
to sort of go missing and defense when it gets
a bit physical. I think I think it's a bit
(01:09:01):
lightweight that that recasement that came on. If you looked
at us, try did you see how he straightened up
their backing. He went straight through the middle when under
the post. That's what we needed. We I don't know,
it just hasn't been the same since they sort of
a one who sort of Conrad Smith's sort of combination there. Yeah,
and are missing missing their center, that twelve thirteen sort
of robust sort of you know that that that that
(01:09:24):
that center partnership they can just penetrate anytime they play
any opposition.
Speaker 2 (01:09:29):
Yeah, it's funny you mentioned Conrad Smith because he wasn't
the biggest guy either, was he Riccardo? You know, the
the bulk in that partnership was Martin Onu At twelve
you go back to Walter Lull and Frank Bunce as well,
and Duncey was. I mean, he's a gee, what a
champion of a player he was. I like Billy Proctor,
and I'm glad that they've given him a run of tests.
But you're right, I don't think he's quite made the
(01:09:49):
step from his excellent super rugby form yet into the
All Blacks. I get the feeling they'll continue to give
him opportunities. But yeah, look at you. It doesn't make you,
It doesn't make you hated or even disliked. It's an
opinion made and it's a valid one.
Speaker 18 (01:10:07):
Yeah, exactly, exactly that.
Speaker 19 (01:10:09):
I appreciate that, poney. Hey, one other thing I want
to mention, how good was that moment when Ardie Savia
I think it was a seventy eighth minute, Yeah, when
he got their penalty for us? Oh was that a
life paper or whatelievable wind me of mister mccawday's.
Speaker 2 (01:10:22):
Yeah, that's yeah, like a yeah, like a guy just
emerging after a penalty one and just yeah, that was
awesome man. And the problem was this, howth Evergon got
the ball back, you know, and we had to have
another sixty seconds of bloody heart jangling.
Speaker 24 (01:10:40):
Oh no, I know, but hey we got through, so
that's a good thing.
Speaker 19 (01:10:43):
Yeah, we loved we we progressed to live another week.
Yeah we do that, championship, we did.
Speaker 2 (01:10:47):
Ricardo. Great to t T mate. We got no problem
with your reception. Call back anytime, my friend twenty one
away from Turvice take a break. We'll come back and
hear from James mcconey in his regular Sunday slider.
Speaker 1 (01:10:59):
You be the TMO, have yours say on eight hundred
and eighty eighty Weekend Sport with Jason Pyne and GJ
n Homes, New Zealand's most trusted home builder news Dogs, they'd.
Speaker 2 (01:11:10):
Be eighteen away from two, Ian says Piney. I've been
to the last three games against the spring Box and
lost them all. So last night it was great being
in the crowd to see a hard fought victory. But
the comments from other people about how great the Springbox
supporters are are one hundred percent true. They're just passionate
about their team, gracious in defeat and in victory role
on Wellington. Thanks Ian. Yeah, at the risk of repeating
(01:11:33):
the same thought, they love their team as much as
we love ours, but they love playing against the All
Blacks just as we love playing against the SPRINGBOKX. The
atmosphere before, during, and I'm sure after the game was
terrific between the two sets of fans. Big part of
our Sundays is a chance sketch up with James mcconey,
(01:11:54):
who was involved in the alternative commentary collective commentary of
the game last night. I saw you up there, James,
getting ready for the game. Were there any moments during
the match when you got a bit nervous?
Speaker 13 (01:12:07):
I was packing myself throughout actually piney and the thing
is what an atmosphere though. Credit to the South Africans
of the North Shore for crossing the bridge and creating
something special at Eden Park because it was awesome and
even Malcolm Marx couldn't hear himself. You could tell he
got a line out throw you borked, didn't he Yes,
(01:12:27):
thanks to the crowd.
Speaker 2 (01:12:28):
They played their part, they did, and that you're right,
there were so many of them, so many South African
rugby jerseys in and around Eden Park before the game
and obviously during the game as well, they weren't able
to witness a victory. They did, though, watch the latest
All Black centurion bring up his hundred, Artie Savian. It's
kind of hard to find new words for Artie, isn't it.
Speaker 13 (01:12:49):
Honestly, when he came in to play first play for
the All Blacks in twenty sixteen, I actually felt sorry
for him because his brother was so good and you know,
already a greater at the game that I thought, oh wow,
what a tough fact to follow. Must be hard being
the little Savier brother. And look at him now, our
World Rugby player of the year, one hundred tests definitely
(01:13:10):
Hall of Fame material in anyone's eyes. And the standards
just so high and clutch with that turnover, yeah, just
nothing but round to the cause for Artie. And wasn't
it lovely seeing seea Calisi go over and give him
a presentation and Hardie's daughter jump up in to see
his arms. Uncle, seea that's so close.
Speaker 2 (01:13:33):
Yeah amazing. I thought that was really heartwarming moment as well.
Three All Blacks tries last night all pretty good. Tries
in their own way.
Speaker 13 (01:13:41):
That's exactly what I was wanting to talk about. It
was just a money Nadawa. He's an assassin. You give
him a stiff and he'll score. So it's sad that
he got taken off, but wide a way to take
that chance because it wasn't the perfect cross kick, but
he turned it into that by taking it, and then
as a dive it was a specky and then selling
the dummy was the Titi the hands the inside ball
(01:14:04):
to Will Jordan, a simple move off the line out
perfectly executed. Everyone who plays rugby should have a similar
move to that, and I'm sure people out there are
going we do have a move like that. Well, that's
exactly how you do it. And then Quintupaia his timing
off Boaden Barrett was beautiful. Nice ball from body positioned
them well, but to Pied just straightened so well that
(01:14:26):
he broke about three or four tackles on the way
to the line. And that's a clutch moment from a
guy who's been through a lot of you know, he's
been to helen back really with injuries.
Speaker 2 (01:14:34):
Yeah, now, just three terrific tries and you've named a
number of players there, but who else saw who did
really stand out for you last night?
Speaker 13 (01:14:45):
Well, I'd like to sing about numbers of five, six, seven, eight.
Speaker 2 (01:14:51):
I'm an a musical and to look it for that
as well. Yeah, they were all good, weren't they the
smaller That was a couple of chiefs in there as well.
Speaker 13 (01:14:58):
Yeah that's a song by steps of course. What a
banger it is, Yeah, I mean twoo by going back
to Lock, he's undersize, right, he was up against two monsters.
He was exceptional in the line outs, quite nice and
light to lift as well to Bo but I'll tell
you what he gets around, does the work. Simon Parker
he had the toughest assignment to start his first test
(01:15:21):
last week at eight and then and then was marking
Peter Steph de Toy. I thought he was really great.
But Artie and Wallace a tt just you know, just
studying see that combination shine through because they haven't played
a whole of the tests together due to a few
things last year. But in those positions, in the seven
(01:15:43):
and eight, but there's there's something exceptional there. But let's
carry on the nine and le Christie, who was fantastic
given that he's really just been called in and Cole Preston,
you talk about tough half debuts, you almost have to
go back to Gary Wetton and Steve Porketty making their
debut in the flower Bomb Test in nineteen eighty one
(01:16:06):
to say that Cayle Preston coming on and that pressure
cooker of fantastic.
Speaker 2 (01:16:10):
Yeah, I thore he acquitted himself very very well. Indeed,
a couple of other matters I want to get your
views on. Are the Warriors. We know they're facing the
Panthers in a knockout game next weekend. We don't know
which day or what time yet, but we know we're
facing the Panthers. Can we win this game?
Speaker 5 (01:16:24):
Yeah? I think we can.
Speaker 13 (01:16:27):
I severely doubt we will. But there's there's something that's
really kind of daring about the Warriors, and that is
what we saw in the Manley game. Is they don't
allow teams to get away on them anymore. And the
old Warriors would have let in forty points, you know,
but this is a steely team, really organized, you know.
(01:16:47):
Dare I say that they stick to their processes, but
there is the expected there and I think, you know, Leka,
he'll be fired up. There'll be even Valmona, who's pretty
much coming as a youngster to shore up that pack.
We'll get Jackson Ford back, I think from suspense and
look at all is not lost. I just do worry
(01:17:08):
that the Penerith Panther's you know, they're going to be
at full strength and firing. That's the only issue.
Speaker 2 (01:17:14):
For you, Piney, Yes, same, I mean they are a
good team. They are a good team. But as I've
heard many people say on many occasions across the season,
on their night, the Warriors can beat anybody. So I
hope that night or day, whichever day or night it is,
comes this weekend and then there's there's more to come
obvious o after that. But I don't think we're favorite,
absolutely not favorite. But funny things happen in knockout games,
(01:17:36):
so let's let's see how it plays out. Hey, just
to finish NFL seasons underway, high excitement in my house.
My son absolutely loves the NFL.
Speaker 13 (01:17:44):
You're a big fan, I am, well, who did your
son support?
Speaker 2 (01:17:47):
He supports the Minnesota Vikings.
Speaker 13 (01:17:51):
Nice, Yes, David Dixon Porci's finalists. We've got his DNAV.
I think Read Ellison played there as well another Kiwi,
So that's that's very cool. I'm a Detroit Lions fan,
long suffering Detroit Lions fan, and and even though we've
gone quite well with our big rooted up coach, it
(01:18:11):
does seem a little bit thought. But I did notice
the other day just seeing Justin Herbert and the and
the LA Chargers beat the Kansas City chief Sir Patrick
Mahomes and Travis Galcy just shows that, you know, teams,
if you can get it right on the day, you
can beat the big names. Although I feel like the
storyline with Travis getting engaged may have been, you know,
(01:18:32):
to Taylor Swift that that is obviously one of the
big focuses, but pretty much just copying what Peter Alertini
did with Megan Cassy from True Bliss. But hey, you know,
all power to them. But yeah, I think NFL is
just a great way if you can, if you can
rig it on you with your work on a Monday morning,
watching Red Zone is probably one of the best ways
(01:18:54):
to take.
Speaker 5 (01:18:56):
In the UFL.
Speaker 2 (01:18:57):
Yeah, I know my son will be finding a reason
to ditch school on Monday morning for Red Zone. He's
he's highly excited about it all James Away. It's good
to chat. We're gonna go out with a but more
of this banger five six seven eight from Steps. Thanks
for joining us as always. Happy Father's Day, mate, cheers
my happy Father's by you and all the days the cheers.
Speaker 16 (01:19:23):
Day.
Speaker 2 (01:19:27):
Thank you five six seven hourday, thank you five six seven.
Speaker 1 (01:19:46):
When it's down to the line, you made a call
on eight hundred eighty ten eighty weekends.
Speaker 4 (01:19:52):
Jason talk me got to the backline this time, Boat,
I'm parent on the right hand side print apartment Thurday,
Oh back.
Speaker 2 (01:20:02):
Right, Yeah, that's Quinta Pia. I think well close to
weissing it anyway. For the All Blacks, scoring the third
of their three tries last night. After the game, of course,
Artie Savis celebrated by the crowd in attendance for his
one hundredth Test match. I spoke shortly after that celebration
with a guy who's been alongside him for pretty much
all of them, Boden Barrett, to check on well to
(01:20:25):
assess Ardie Savier's influence on the All Blacks.
Speaker 30 (01:20:28):
Oh, he's a hard and soul of this team. Gosh,
he's such a humble champion. Like the way he goes
about his business. He's so quiet, calm composed, but he's
got better worry about him and we just love playing
with him because we know what he does for this
(01:20:49):
team through his efforts and his actions. So yeah, to
put this performance in for him tonight and for him
to get that turnover at the end, it was very fitting.
Even though the box had a couple of opportunities after that.
We didn't quite close it then, but yeah, special man.
Speaker 2 (01:21:06):
And at the other end of the spectrum, Cole Preston
becomes the latest All Black and he's got a bit
of media to do as well. It must be nice
to welcome a new member into the club.
Speaker 30 (01:21:14):
Absolutely, KP has been an absolute champion, Like just been
really impressed with his diligence as I guess, willingness to
learn and grow and just get better. His attitude is
second to none. So I'm sure it's the first of many.
Speaker 2 (01:21:31):
And there was some test match. Called them test matches,
don't they It's been a massive build up. How did
you managed to not play the test match before tonight
across such a hyphe double week man.
Speaker 30 (01:21:41):
Hang last week and the week off I played it
ten times at least this week we could train and
channel our emotions and energy, but you nailed it. Like
you can't play it on a Tuesday or Thursday. You
could just got to keep that not in your gut
throughout the week. And gosh, there's all sorts of emotions
going through all of us this week, all sorts of
(01:22:04):
thoughts and yes, that's what it really takes to prepare
bone deep and that genuinely I guess it leads to
the performance which wasn't perfect, but we got the job done.
Speaker 2 (01:22:18):
Congratulations, see you in Wellington. Thanks very much, Piney, We'll go.
That's Bodenbarrat. I spoke too shortly after the final whistle
last night, far away from two. Thanks for your calls,
your correspondence, your thoughts on the All Blacks spring box.
We'll do it all again next weekend Test two between
the two at Sky Stadium in Wellington. Will build up
towards the game during Weekend Sport on Saturday Live from
(01:22:39):
Shed twenty two and our build up of the game
itself from six o'clock. Elliot Smith and Ross Bond with
the call next Saturday night. We're going to pivot across
to rugby league after two. We haven't mentioned the Warrior
as much this weekend. We now know they are facing
the Panthers next weekend in an elimination final. Can we
beat the Panthers? Can we beat the Panthers?
Speaker 1 (01:23:01):
The only place to discuss the biggest sports issues on
and after field, HiT's all on Win James Sport with
Jason Vaine on your home of Sports Talk.
Speaker 2 (01:23:14):
Two o seven. Thanks for joining us on Weekend Sport.
I'm Jason Pine with Any McDonald producing the show. We're
here for another hour than Tim Beveridge with the Sunday
edition of the Weekend Collective. He's beavering away out there
getting an award winning show together, no doubt. Before we
can hand the mic over, did you know that there
are two Keyweeks who have qualified for the World Long
(01:23:34):
Drive Golf Championship and the US later on this month.
One of them is going to join us. His name
is Chris Charleston. What do you have to do and
how far he up hit the thing? If you're going
to be in with a chance, so the World Long
Drive Golf Championship KIWI participants or one of them, Chris Charleston,
(01:23:55):
this hour, we're going to get you to the US
as well. The new NFL season is underway. This is
American football, of course. Bill Barnwell out of EUN going
to preview the season for US. Can I talk some
Warriors as well? Willy Poaching standing by average, had to us.
We know the Warriors will host the Panthers and an
(01:24:17):
elimination final next weekend. We don't yet have clarity about
which day and what time kickoff will be. There's been
some mail around it. It could be Sunday, which I
think would suit a lot of us with the All
Blacks taking up most of Saturday night. Be a shame
if the Warriors clashed with the All Blacks, with most
people wanting probably to watch both anyway, Willy poaching on
(01:24:42):
our chances of beating the Panthers whenever it might be,
in any elimination final and going through to the next
round of the playoffs. Your thoughts on that are welcome
as well. Off back to back losses, dear back the
Warriors to clean that slate and just start afresh, start
a new season, almost a knockout tournament of sorts. We
(01:25:04):
can get to that as well. Your cause and correspondence,
of course, continue to be welcome. Oh eight one hundred
and eighty ten nineteen nine till one text emails to
Jason a news talk saidb dot co dot Nz. But
it is a bumper edition we have prepared for you
of in case you missed it. This is some of
the stuff that may have escaped your attention with so
much going on at the moment. The Panthers the aforementioned
(01:25:27):
booking that trip to Auckland with a forty twenty one
over the Dragons yesterday, I've got one more.
Speaker 31 (01:25:33):
Jack comes back to Cleary Lensy Smith he threaded the
needle there, Nathan clearing another tit assist with the great
halfback of Lensey Smith who crashes in for another one
for Penry.
Speaker 2 (01:25:48):
Meantime, the Titans came from behind to meet the Tigers
barrels out to.
Speaker 32 (01:25:52):
Four fo Yeah, but these have cuen our second half part.
Speaker 2 (01:26:09):
So it's all on the line this afternoon for Annie
McDonald's Newcastle Knights to try and avoid the Wooden spoon.
The Sharks have found some form entering the finals with
a threshing of the Bulldogs Who's Hines.
Speaker 3 (01:26:22):
Sitis it up, Ratchardson cut up ball, Granella's away back
inside and Jets.
Speaker 2 (01:26:29):
Scores for Granella. They flick a switch and off they
go to the Women's Rugby World Cup. A big win
for the United States over somewhat has given them something
to smile about as their tournament ends. That was maya
learned on our World Cup debut.
Speaker 7 (01:26:46):
Still driving and still score.
Speaker 33 (01:26:51):
The USA Eagles, playing at fourteen, are up to fifty tints.
Speaker 2 (01:26:58):
England, though, have romped expectedly so into the quarterfinals, where
a dominant win over Australia Billi good tackle, wooden support.
Speaker 31 (01:27:07):
Shortball in England's second effort Sarah Burn fastootball down in
England forty five.
Speaker 2 (01:27:15):
The score and history for Fiji as they extend Welsh
rugby's misery to the women's side as well.
Speaker 29 (01:27:21):
That's one of surprises of Tina suff isolated return moments
Joseph in the other She's been stepping up for Fiji
this entire day.
Speaker 25 (01:27:35):
Fiji only one what match a.
Speaker 2 (01:27:39):
Woman's rugby role cuts.
Speaker 25 (01:27:41):
They have beaten.
Speaker 29 (01:27:43):
One of the sixth.
Speaker 2 (01:27:45):
Nations sides to domestic rugby here in the NPC and
impress of when for Manawatu I a white cuttle.
Speaker 31 (01:27:51):
Solid scrum from Manawatu here Bill Youwan comes around on
the other side now They come out in the back.
Speaker 14 (01:27:56):

Speaker 2 (01:27:57):

Speaker 2 (01:28:01):

close here over the lad Love Score and Canterbury have
taken the Ramphilly Shield back up to christ Church with them.
Oh not just said McLeod's got it. McLeod is gonna score.
Speaker 31 (01:28:23):
Trying to write four red and black and they hit fifty.
Speaker 2 (01:28:28):
Just the short tenure for South one. Then to the
US Tennis Open Arena. Sabalanca has gone back to back
in the women's singles, a straight sets win over Amanda
and Samova. Yeah, sat like it, pass through.
Speaker 8 (01:28:42):
The cloud fifteen.
Speaker 12 (01:28:47):
In street sets.
Speaker 2 (01:28:48):
After all of the emotions she felt losing the first
three majors of the year, she was composed, assured, richly
deserved win and finally to the Rugby Championship, the Wallaby
showing nerves of steel to pull off a late win
over Argentina in Townsville. It trickles through the Lenston Mainal.
(01:29:09):
It's your teut, It's no and there with him you
get to.
Speaker 7 (01:29:18):
Have they hit.
Speaker 17 (01:29:19):
The jack.
Speaker 2 (01:29:24):
Is waiting, Tzel is ready town till.
Speaker 1 (01:29:32):
The scoos from the track fields and the court on
your homes Sport weekend Sport with.
Speaker 2 (01:29:38):
Jason thirteen minutes past to the Warriors opponent in the
first round of the NRL playoffs has been confirmed. They
will play the Penrith Panthers in an elimination final at
go Media Stadium next weekend, just repeating the day and
time yet to be confirmed. There are reports of a
Sunday afternoon game to avoid clashing with the All Blacks
(01:30:00):
on Saturday night. Quite how often and how strictly the
NRL look at these sorts of things, I guesses entirely
over to them, but it'd be nice to think that
they could get a game on the Sunday afternoon perhaps
which has been reported in a couple of outlets online,
and avoid the All Blacks on a Saturday night. Regardless,
there's going to be a big, big test for the
(01:30:21):
Warriors as the four time defending champion Penrith Panthers come
to town. Former Warrior our Skysport Rugby League analyst Willy
Poaching is with us. Willy this is a tough draw
for the Warriors, there's no getting away from it. But
at the stage of the season, I guess there are
no easy games as we go into the top eight.
In general terms, how do you evaluate the Warriors' ability
(01:30:42):
to beat the Panthers next weekend?
Speaker 5 (01:30:46):
Well, they have an ability and that's the thing to
start with. They have a chance to beat them. And yeah,
it's a tough proposition to go against the reigning champions
or chasing five titles in a row, but it's an
exciting challenge at the same time. And by the same time,
it's a tough challenge for the Panthers to come over
here to or to take on the Warriors in their background,
(01:31:09):
who are desperate, who are hungry, their backs against the wall.
I just see the Warriors come out with both gloves
up fighting all the way through.
Speaker 2 (01:31:17):
Are the Panthers a slightly less intimidating opponent than they
have been in the last few years.
Speaker 5 (01:31:24):
When you look at the troubles that they had at
the start of the season, and you know what just
comes through what they have of experience, And you can't
discount for any of that, especially at this time of year,
their experience that doing the right things and getting ready
at the right time. The coach gave them all the
rest a couple of weeks ago, so they're freshened up
(01:31:46):
a little bit and they're focused, but I think they're
probe I think it's a great opportunity for the Warriors
to turn things around. Next week.
Speaker 2 (01:31:53):
The Warriors come into the finals off the back of
back to back defeats to the Eels and the Sea
Eagles to finish their irregular season. Well, how easily can
can that be put to one side and a clean
slate applied for the finals.
Speaker 5 (01:32:08):
I was thinking about this after the loss on the
weekend and now some of the stuff that was mentioned
by us on Sky but also by Kirk Cape, well
after the game. It's a new competition now the slate
is clean and both things come to it's do or die,
and the focus is just that when you're a player,
(01:32:29):
you turn up on Monday and knowing that, okay, it's
all or nothing now. So they'll will be a big
focus in training going into this week. Session knows what's
needed at this time of year as much as the
opposition does. I think the guys will be ready and
pumped the things to fix up technically, it's the errors.
It's just the simple errors for them. It was the
(01:32:50):
same against Paramatter and the same last week. So if
they can dignify that, hold the ball, especially for a
team that's prided itself so much on completing high they're
just losing moments and opportunities to put the under put
in opposition under pressure. So they can do that this week.
Secure the ball, control the ball, control the game.
Speaker 2 (01:33:12):
Elimination of errors. Is that coachable?
Speaker 5 (01:33:15):
Well?
Speaker 2 (01:33:15):
He can you coach elimination of those of those errors there?
Speaker 27 (01:33:20):
You can?
Speaker 5 (01:33:20):
You can, And that's going to be a focus by
the coach and whether that's just mere words but practice,
and it's also an element of concentration and personal pride,
and some of it is fundamentals. I'm knocking on at
dummy half and simple catching of the ball as James
f Sha Harris had and I'm not trying to point
him out, but just those little moments, just be focused.
(01:33:45):
As I said, they'll turn up on Monday ready switched
on to go that I'll go into the game, whether
that's Saturday or Sunday night. Sunday night, I'll be perfect.
Gives them another day to build up and get themselves
primed and ready to go.
Speaker 2 (01:33:58):
You mentioned James Fashaharis. There are a couple of times,
nine seasons and all that success at the Panthers, and
here he is in his first season the Warriors and
he's facing the pan Does in his first knockout game
for his new club. How do you reckon he'd be
feeling pump pump.
Speaker 5 (01:34:12):
Yeah, he's a competitor. Yeah, he's you know, he's the
leader of this group and he's thriving on it to
helping pump ready to go. As soon as he won
that Grand Final last week last year, his association with
the Panthers was done. He was all focused on the
Warriors getting ready to go. Yeah, he's going to be
a truly inspirational character. And that dressing this week like
(01:34:34):
he has done little seasons.
Speaker 2 (01:34:35):
We saw rocke Berry go afinger the other night. Don't
know any any more about whether he'll be okay for
this weekend. He's had a rotten run with injuries for
years out. How big a blow is that for the Warriors?
Speaker 5 (01:34:47):
Yeah, it didn't look good, as you said, no official
word about what injury it is and how significant it is.
So now I think of the cross, but he's just yeah,
he's had a tough time of it in twenty twenty five.
It started in twenty twenty four and the season got
played the start of it anyway, and yeah he's able
(01:35:08):
to string three games together and then bang it goes again.
So yeah, she'll be hoping that this year for him
is just an anomaly. He gets a good preseason under
his gets strong and healthy and come back. But he
is a loss. He's a loss to that side and
whoever they chuck in that position. And you know, the
good thing is a couple of players have had a
(01:35:29):
chance to be in that spot on the field for
the Warriors this season, so there won't be unfamiliarity to
whoever he puts in there.
Speaker 2 (01:35:36):
And on the plus side, I think Jackson Ford's available
again after his suspension. So that's a boost, isn't it
having Jackson Ford back there?
Speaker 5 (01:35:43):
Oh? Massively? Yeah, it sounds like him and Jacob Laban
will we sit again, So a couple of extra bodies
for the coach to pick from. But Jackson Ford or
he's been great and then he played some long minutes
and quality minutes for the Warriors when he's been out
there again. He's had a moment to freshen up, get
himself ready and writing and fast and steady to go
(01:36:05):
for this week. You'll have some punch through that middles
James Fisher House.
Speaker 2 (01:36:10):
Yeah, well we wait to see when and what time
this game will be. We know they're facing the Panthers.
Will find out when very soon. Will you always good
to get your analysis, mate.
Speaker 5 (01:36:17):
Thanks for joining us, Thanks mate, thanks having us.
Speaker 2 (01:36:20):
No, thanks for joining us. Willy Willy poaching there part
of the Sky Sport Rugby League team. So there are
two games to go in the regular season, the Dolphins
against the Raiders at four o'clock this afternoon, then the
Eels against the Knights to finish. The results of those
games will have no bearing on the table. The top
eight is already decided, meaning that the first round of
(01:36:43):
the finals is locked in again. We don't know when
each of these games will we played, but we do
know the four matchups in the qualifying finals. These are
the ones which involve the top four sides. It'll be Raiders,
Broncos and Storm Bulldogs. The winners will go through. The
losers will play the winners of the elimination finals. Sharks Roosters, Warriors, Panthers,
(01:37:10):
and I'm looking at some early odds for all of
these games, and in all four the Warriors are the
biggest outsider at the moment. They're paying three dollars ten
to beat the Panthers, the Panthers paying a dollar thirty eight.
This game will be at go Media Stadium, huge crowd
in coming, massive weight of support behind the Warriors. You
(01:37:33):
absolutely would not put it past them. It hasn't been
the season of twenty twenty three where there was high
consistency across the season and the Warriors went into the
finals with confidence high. They're coming off the back of
back to back defeats to the Eels and to Manly,
neither of who will feature in the top eight. So
you can probably understand why the bookies don't give them
(01:37:56):
as much of a chance against the Panthers. But funny
things happen in knockout games of sport, not just rugby league,
all sport. What chance do you give them? We can
take couple of calls, oh, eight hundred eighty, ten eighty
if you want to give us your levels of optimism
or otherwise for the Warriors. Have they just elongated their season?
By one week or can they get past the Panthers
(01:38:18):
and surprise a lot of people and come up against
one of the top four sides who drops out of
the qualifying finals. Be keen to know? Give you oh,
eight hundred and eighty ten eighty is our number nine
two nine two if you would prefer to text it
through two twenty two back in a second weekend Sport
It's more than just a game.
Speaker 1 (01:38:37):
Weekend Sport with Jason Fine and TJ Gunnomes New Zealand's
most trusted home builder.
Speaker 2 (01:38:43):
News Talks NB News Talks AB are two twenty five
updating you on some live sport. The Chatham Cup finals
on at the moment at North Shore or at Albany
Stadium on the north Shore of Auckland. It's Auckland United
up against Wellington Olympic, who are the defending champions, looking
to go back to back and doing a pretty good
job of at Wellington Olympics. Sixty four minutes gone and
they lead three to one over Auckland United. To the
(01:39:05):
Bunnings end they have plenty five to three ahead of
Taranaki after twenty minutes. I had a look at the
MPC table and I was shocked to see Otago in second.
Otago was second in the NPC. I don't know how
that escaped my attention. So well done to Otago. Tasman
take on Auckland a little bit later on this afternoon
Farah Palmer Cup action. There's a game in Blenham at
(01:39:28):
the moment Tasman against North Harbor and Tasman ahead by
five points to nil after twenty minutes. There and also
international men's rugby the Pacific Nations Cup. The USA up
against Japan at the moment in California thirty three fourteen.
Japan lead the USA early in the second half of
that one. Two kiwis have qualified for the World Long
(01:39:51):
Drive Championships and the US later on this month. They
are Chris Charlton and his training partner George Wardell. Chris
Chilton is with US. Chris, congratulations on qualification. What did
you have to do to qualify for the work Old
Long Drive Golf Championship.
Speaker 27 (01:40:10):
Yeah, it's so sport itself is pretty simple. Basically, stand
up there, You've got two and a half minutes. Me
and you head against each other, so we both hit
six spores each and whoever hits the longest ball wins.
So sport itself is pretty simple. You sort of have
to work within I guess a parameter. You can't just
hit it anywhere. Kind of what most users would think
(01:40:32):
is sort of a typical golf feel way is kind.
Speaker 9 (01:40:34):
Of the width of the of the grid. But yeah,
sports pretty simple. In terms of getting to Worlds.
Speaker 27 (01:40:41):
I was fortunate enough Golf Australia had a couple of
tickets to the World Champs on off as part of
a series that they run over summer, and I was
fortunate enough to win the Australian PGA Championship, which is
sort of held in conjunction with the actual Australian PGA
over in Brisbane. So fortunate enough to win that and
(01:41:03):
obviously secure ticket to Worlds, which is super exciting.
Speaker 2 (01:41:06):
So you talked about going head to head with another competitor.
How many rounds of that are there before the final?
Speaker 9 (01:41:14):
So in the States it'll be it'll be about four.
Speaker 27 (01:41:18):
Four rounds as far as I know the formats, So
you run in groups of sixteen and basically you do
five rounds, which is thirty four so five sets or
six and you get a points system and then the top.
Speaker 9 (01:41:30):
Eight produced through the next round, so you do.
Speaker 27 (01:41:33):
I think it's five qualifying rounds and then after that
you go into knockouts, and knockouts is typically quarterfinals, semi final, final.
Speaker 2 (01:41:42):
Gotcha? Is it where it lands or where it stops?
Speaker 27 (01:41:46):
It's where it stops, so you can't actually it has
to stay in the grid the whole time. It can't
go out and back in, so there's no heading trees
or houses and popping back into the grid. But it's
where it lands and rolls. So that's part of the
sport really is every track is different. Some tracks have
you know, it's like a runway with a hard ground,
(01:42:07):
and some tracks are light in terms of the soft
mard and then you've got wind.
Speaker 9 (01:42:12):
Factors and there's a lot to it. But ye's where
it ends up.
Speaker 2 (01:42:17):
What is your best distance.
Speaker 27 (01:42:20):
In the final of Australian the Australian Champs, I had
at three hundred and eighty six.
Speaker 2 (01:42:25):
Meters three hundred and eighty six meters, Yeah, yeah, good.
Where would that get you? Theoretically if you hit that
at the World Champs. Where would that get you?
Speaker 16 (01:42:38):
Not very far?
Speaker 5 (01:42:39):
Really.
Speaker 27 (01:42:40):
There was a smile on my face because it's in Denver,
which is in the middle of a super high altitude,
So because the altitude is so high up there, people
are probably heading it closer to four ten four hundred
and twenty.
Speaker 9 (01:42:54):
Meters for about four hundred and fifty yards.
Speaker 27 (01:42:58):
I believe last time they were up there for an event,
they were trying to get close to five hundred yards.
So it is all very weather dependent, but yeah, you'll
probably need something closer to the full fifty mark.
Speaker 2 (01:43:09):
I'd say that is incredible. So do you feel that
is something you've got in your locker? Could you hit
it that far?
Speaker 27 (01:43:17):
I think if things go my way, yeah, for sure.
I've been working a lot this year on basically just
raw power and speed. Obviously there's a massive skill acquisition
in terms of knowing how to fight to it, knowing
how to spin rates, all that sorte of thing. But
one thing I've been working a lot on this year
is my speed and making sure that if I hit
my best ball and one of the top guys that
(01:43:38):
said best ball, that we're.
Speaker 9 (01:43:40):
Somewhat close enough to each other.
Speaker 27 (01:43:43):
And yeah, it's still a work in progress to bring
it all together in the next sort of seven eight weeks,
but we're getting closer and close to to bridgingnet gap,
which long term is the goal.
Speaker 2 (01:43:54):
Incredible. So power and speed is there one that you
know you talked about working on your speed there you've
clearly pinpointed that as an area where you can get
your biggest gains or are you also still trying to
get as much power as you can? Plus there must
be technique issues here too, surely.
Speaker 27 (01:44:11):
Yeah, Yeah, Well I came from a background of golf,
so there is a massive technical issue which is learning
how to untrain my golf swing and get into a
long drive swing. In terms of areas to work on,
I think it's it's probably more of a speed element.
I think definitely strong enough than powerful enough in the
gym retrospect to compete with the long drive guys. But
(01:44:33):
I think there's an element for reps under the belt
and just making sure that my top in speed is
good enough to compete with the rest of the rest
of the world.
Speaker 9 (01:44:45):
But yeah, in terms of yeah, it's a tough sport.
It's one of those ones where you've.
Speaker 27 (01:44:49):
Got to make sure that you're not trying to do
your top in speed all times of all times of
the year, or else you will.
Speaker 9 (01:44:56):
End up sort of breaking your body a little bit.
Speaker 27 (01:44:58):
So there's there's elements which are technical times and at
the moment sort of coming to the.
Speaker 9 (01:45:03):
Back end of our winter and all the technical stuff been.
Speaker 27 (01:45:06):
Done and now to be bringing it all together and
putting it out onto the grid.
Speaker 2 (01:45:10):
As they say, how are the crowds at these events?
Speaker 9 (01:45:14):
They are phenomenal.
Speaker 27 (01:45:15):
There's some events which we've been lucky to be involved with.
The Ozziepga was an awesome event last year.
Speaker 5 (01:45:22):
They ran it.
Speaker 9 (01:45:23):
They had fireworks on the first tee.
Speaker 27 (01:45:25):
They basically as soon as the Ozziepga on the Saturday
afternoon had finished, they had all the crowd and moved
straight over to the first tee. They had fireworks, they
had like flamethrowers. They had about probably five six hundred
people there watching and we basically ran our event at
the exact same time as they just came off. I
(01:45:45):
think it was minule just come off the eighteenth Green.
So they tried to put on a bit of a
spectacle and have a bit of fun with it, especially
for a.
Speaker 2 (01:45:51):
Lot of the corporates that are around so good and
as their price money involved here, Chris.
Speaker 9 (01:45:58):
There is I actually am not actually sure.
Speaker 27 (01:46:02):
It's not really the motivator, And to be honest, I
couldn't actually tell you what the prize money is for
World Champs. It's only my second time heading over to
the States for this, so.
Speaker 31 (01:46:13):
I hope so.
Speaker 5 (01:46:16):
I know.
Speaker 27 (01:46:17):
I think last year is about forty grand us potentially
for first place, but I honestly could not tell that.
Speaker 2 (01:46:24):
I actually quite like the fact you don't know. I
think that says a lot about your motivation for this,
just trying to smack it as far as you can.
What is your Do you still play regular golf? And
you talked about having to adjust because obviously you know
you don't want to have it that far off every
every tea that you walk onto. So do you still
play a bit of regular golf as well?
Speaker 5 (01:46:45):
I used to.
Speaker 27 (01:46:46):
I used to when I first started a long job.
I did, but my coach, funnily enough, has banned me.
He said it missus with my swing too much, going
from drivers to irons and all that sort of thing.
So I've taken a back chef unfortunately from golf, and
I will get back into it.
Speaker 9 (01:47:02):
I play a fine ambrose of in every labor day.
Speaker 27 (01:47:06):
I played probably two or three around a year, but
and probably playoff for maybe a tour or three, which
is largely through the long drives and terrible puttings. So
you can get an agree with any three partners at
the part.
Speaker 2 (01:47:22):
Well, let's drive for show PUFA do Isn't that? That's
the old adage? And well, obviously you're driving at what
do they provide you with the golf balls? Does everyone
use the same kind of golf balls? You clip obviously
don't bring your own, yeah, so you have to use what.
Speaker 9 (01:47:34):
They give you.
Speaker 27 (01:47:34):
So that's part of I guess the preparation as well
is what balls are they're using, how do they compress,
how do they fly? Last year they used a Bridgestone ball.
This year they've gone with Pinnacle as their main sponsors,
is using Pinnacle balls. So it's all part of the
training is how do I get the most out of
that specific golf ball as well, So we spend a
lot of time in simulators looking at numbers, spin rates,
(01:47:57):
especially for different types of golf balls. So there anything
consonant is obviously what we use in terms of the gear,
but then in terms of the balls and stuff, they
by them more, which is good because you end up
losing most of them.
Speaker 2 (01:48:08):
Anyway I can imagine, Hey, mate, this is just awesome.
I'm just so pleased we've had the chance to chat
about this. So what your head off what middle of September,
get yourself acclimatized, and then get into it.
Speaker 27 (01:48:18):
On about the twenty fifth I think, yeah, Unfortunately we
would like to be more time over there, but we
head over about five I think four or five days
before get acclimatized.
Speaker 9 (01:48:27):
It's been a week over there, which would be really good.
Speaker 27 (01:48:29):
And then our season kicks off, so we've got a
fear bit of travel end of the year China and
Australia and stuff, which is cool. So it's exciting time
a year to be doing a bit of long driving,
getting out and traveling the world as well, which is
always a bit of fun.
Speaker 2 (01:48:43):
So there's actually a season. There's a circuit for this
as well, so this World Champs is just one of
the things you're involved in.
Speaker 5 (01:48:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 27 (01:48:49):
Yeah, there's an American circuit which is the World Long
Drive Circuit. There is also a New Zealand circuit which
XDL and New Zealand run, which is really cool. We're
lucky to have I guess sort of five or six
events here and then the Australian circuit. There's an Asian circuit,
so it's kind of what you can afford to do.
Obviously in America it's it's costly to get over there,
(01:49:11):
and it's it's not a cheap trip, but we sort
of get over here as much as you can because
that's I guess we're the world ranking points are, that's
the wod events are, That's that's ultimately where we want
to be at. But the World Champs is the krem
de la creme and that's what he runs trying to win.
So fortunate enough to.
Speaker 9 (01:49:30):
Be there this year and hopefully show them a little
bit about what Keywis can do.
Speaker 2 (01:49:35):
So good mate. Look, it's been great chatting to you, Chris.
All the best mate. Can't wait to see how you go.
Speaker 9 (01:49:41):
No, awesome, appreciate the time, Thanks very much, No.
Speaker 2 (01:49:43):
Thank you for your time, Chris. What a what a
fascinating chat. Chris Charlton one of the key we is
qualifying for the World Long Drive Golf Championships in the
US late September this year. So interesting he's coach. This
coach doesn't let him play normal golf anymore. Love that
We'll keep track of Chris's progress when he's over in
(01:50:04):
the US later on this month, and let you how
he goes.
Speaker 5 (01:50:07):
What did he say?
Speaker 2 (01:50:08):
Close to five hundred yards? I reckon some of the
top guys can get that is a long way, a
long long way. A couple of text throw on the Warriors, Piney.
I think the Warriors with no expectations, says Andrew, on
their shoulders, and you are do you rather to have
a blinder at home? And they're a very dangerous side
When they do, they'll know they're not going to win
(01:50:28):
the comp this year, but taking out the Panthers will
be deemed to success for me and possibly for them
as well. Thanks Andrew. Piney either says this one reminds
me when the Warriors from eighth beat top of the
table Melbourne in the two thousand and sixth finals, the
only time an eighth place team has beaten a first
place team. Yeah, I guess that the underdog has in
(01:50:51):
the past emerged victorious. The irony here is that the
Warriors finished higher than the Panthers, so the table would
tell you that the Warriors should be favorite, but it
is the Panthers four time defending champions. HAMI says Piet
Stop trying to get my hopes up made. I have
the same probability of winning Lotto as the Warriors do
of winning this game. It's possible, but it won't happen.
(01:51:14):
Amoush Anything is possible, Mate, anything is possible. Live Sport
Chatham Cup Final. Auckland United have port a goalback, but
Wellington Limps have scored another one too. Thirteen minutes to
go in our top domestic men's knockout competition and Wellington
Olympic leading Auckland United by four goals to two, and
(01:51:35):
in the Bunnings MPC may have plenty of extended their
lead over Tananaki. They now lead twelve three after half
an hour of their game in New Plymouth and Far
Palmer Cup Rugby from Lansdowne Park in Blenham, North Harbor,
Head of Tasman, fourteen points to five after half an
hour in that one, coming up twenty two away from three.
(01:51:57):
High excitement among fans of American sport. With the new
NFL season underway, We're going to get you to the
US and to one of the the foremost experts on NFL,
Bill Barnwell, out of ESPN, going to join us next
to preview the upcoming season, The.
Speaker 1 (01:52:14):
Tough Questions Off the Turf Weekend Sport with Jason Pine
and GJ. Gardnerholmes, New Zealand's most trusted home builder News.
Speaker 5 (01:52:23):
Coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:52:24):
Eighteen away from three. The new NFL season is underway.
This is American football, of course, leading to the Super
Bowl in February. A couple of games already Eagles twenty four,
Cowboys twenty Chargers, too good for the Chiefs twenty seven
to twenty one. That game was played in Brazil. A
raft of games tomorrow, New Zealand time. The big day
four NFL over here is Monday. It's Sunday over there,
(01:52:46):
and then there's a Monday night game which folds into
Tuesday morning over here. Let's bring in senior football writer
with ESPN, Bill Barnwell. Bill, great to have you join
us across New Zealand with a bit of a preview
of the new season. The Eagles at a winning start
their Super Bowl champions of course from last season. Are
they looking like they could go back to back?
Speaker 8 (01:53:08):
Certainly, although definitely some question marks. This wasn't the sort
of comprehensive when you would expect in front of your
fans obviously started in very curious fashion with Jalen Carter,
their best defensive player, getting ejected before the game. It
really even started for spitting on one of the Cowboys players.
Very odd starts the game, and it was close throughout.
(01:53:30):
It was not a game where they dominated a Cowboys
team that's not really expected to compete this year. So
maybe some questions, but certainly any victory is a victory,
I suppose.
Speaker 2 (01:53:39):
What about some of the other contend is I'll give
you a few teams, the Bills, the Ravens, the Lions,
teams that haven't quite got there but have been close.
Could they take the next step this time?
Speaker 8 (01:53:52):
Oh, certainly.
Speaker 22 (01:53:53):
And there's a.
Speaker 8 (01:53:55):
There's no team that feels inbeatable right now in the NFL.
The Eagles were excellent last year. That they lost a
lot of firepower on the defensive ball, something in censive
side of the ball, I should say, about forty four
percent of the they had last year from their players.
Now they've gone elsewhere. So a lot of young talent
on the Eagles, but certainly they feel more vulnerable. And
the Chiefs, who had been the two times Super Bowl
(01:54:16):
winners before that, lost to the Eagles in the Super
Bowl last year, did get their season off to a
loss in Brazil, so they're already all in one, and
they played the Eagles next week in the marquee matchup
of Week two in the NFL. So definitely feels like
the top of the league is vulnerable. Really a lot
of teams who could compete the Packers making you big
(01:54:36):
move for Micah Parsons the start offensive and rusher before
the season a couple weeks ago. But it does feel
like a lot of teams could do it. But no
team really a clear favorite right now.
Speaker 2 (01:54:47):
Do you evaluate where the Chiefs are at? Clearly still
a very very good football team. Will I continue the
run of consistent excellence.
Speaker 8 (01:54:58):
I do think they'll be excellent. But I wonder how
they react to the Super Bowl loss last year, because
it wasn't one thing to lose in a close game
and feel like, oh maybe it wasn't our day. They
really were overwhelmed, They really were blown out by the
Eagles from the very start of that game to the
very end, and so they have I wonder how motivated.
Speaker 9 (01:55:18):
They're going to be.
Speaker 8 (01:55:19):
You know, they'd won two Super Bowls in a row.
Certainly maybe like, you know, what else is there to conquer?
Sort of feeling. Now they have every reason to be motivated. Now,
they have every reason to be incentivized to prove Hey,
that was just the fluke. We really are the best
team in football. But a lot of the players, a
lot of even the coaches there, Andy Reid, Chris Jones,
Travis Kelsey and not Patrick Mahomes. You know, it's the
(01:55:43):
first three guys thirty year old. Are Patrick mahonmes now
getting into you know, the veteran phase of his career.
You sort of wonder have they gone as far as
they can with that core and do they maybe need
to you know, replenish it and refresh a bit, or
do they have one more title in them? It feels like,
you know, after an only one start playing maybe the
best team in football in League two, the Chiefs could
(01:56:03):
really be, you know, playing from behind the eight ball
very quickly, which is not something they're used to. They
usually get off to very good starts.
Speaker 9 (01:56:10):
Bill.
Speaker 2 (01:56:11):
When you look across the league, are there any rookies
new faces that you could see moving the needle for
their teams this season?
Speaker 27 (01:56:18):
Oh?
Speaker 8 (01:56:19):
Yeah, I mean obviously you always look towards the quarterbacks
as the team who could make guys who could make
Tuesday big leaps very quickly. You look at Cam war
the first overall pick who went to Tennessee. That's a
franchise that has been really disappointing for several years now,
haven't been able to do much, But that's a team
that invested a lot of their offensive offseason, didn't get
(01:56:39):
much out of their quarterbacks last year. In New York,
Jackson dark who's going to be the new quarterback for
the New York Giants eventually a quarterback who is very exciting,
really impressed during the exhibition periods during the preseason. So
the question of when he's going to get in the
lineup because the Giants have a very tough schedule to
start the year. But I would expect Jackson Dart to
be a player who really impresses. And then Ashton john
(01:57:02):
T the really wonderful running back who went to Las
Vegas where they hired a new coach, Pete Carroll. They
have a new quarterback in Gino Smith. That's a team
where if they can have an exciting year. Obviously Vegas
is always a fun place to play, so that could
be you know, a spot where if they get their
running game going, he could be one of the focal
points of the league. In his rookie season.
Speaker 2 (01:57:22):
You mentioned this ninety four start offensive lineman Michael Passon's
big tried pride to the season from the Cowboys to
greenby just throll down a bit into that for us,
What does that do to both teams?
Speaker 8 (01:57:35):
Yeah, for the Cowboys sort of the you know, they
call themselves America's team. They're the most popular team in America.
It's almost like a recognition that they're not the team
people want to play for anymore. You know, the Mica
Parsons would rather have been traded to sign a contract
for less money to play with the Cowboys and having
an owner and Jerry Joneses now in his eighties sort
(01:57:57):
of reacting to a player wanting to get paid a
record salary for his position and to sort of just
you know, throw his the restrot there is toys out
of the prem I suppose, and I'm getting rid of
him regardless. After the Packers, a team that is the
youngest team in football over the last couple of years,
having a lot of talented players, Maybe he didn't have
(01:58:18):
that star power. Maybe he didn't have that guy who
really gave opposing coaches fits and scared them during the week.
Now they have that player in Michael Persons, and that's
a team or maybe they could take a leap forward
because they are so young and now they added a
superstar player, one of the best players in football at
any position, in the prime of his career. So really
a big swing for them and the Cowboys a sort
(01:58:39):
of surprising step backwards.
Speaker 2 (01:58:41):
I'm not sure if they had the chance to see
Louis Reese zamat Welsh rugby star who gave the NFL
a go, didn't work out for him. What makes the
NFL so difficult to break into for athletes who terrifically
successful in other similar sports.
Speaker 8 (01:58:58):
Yeah, I mean we with that.
Speaker 5 (01:58:59):
You know.
Speaker 8 (01:58:59):
Obviously an incredible rugby career through his early twentiesesn't make
this as a player in the talent of his career.
Is someone who is in the prime of his career
when he decided to make the switch to the NFL.
It really is tough just because there are some specialized
skills that come into it. You're not just uh, you're
not just catching, you're not just running, you're blocking, you
(01:59:22):
have to stay healthy, you have to convince people that
you're you know that you know the playbook. It is
such a specialized sort of sport. And when you see
great athletes here in America who played other sports who
have tried to run into football, it's been a very
difficult thing. The one exception, of course, has been Austoos
football players who've been able to punt, But that's really
(01:59:42):
a specialized skill which you're only doing one thing. You're
really only just punting, and so you know, that has
been probably a way for people to break through it,
kicking and punting. But I just think the range of
things you have to do and the sort of time
frame you have to prove it and is so small
that it really is difficult. So I certainly appreciate Resentment's
(02:00:03):
effort into trying to do it. Maybe, you know, if
he had been willing to stick with it for a
few more years, maybe he would have got an opportunity.
Obviously an incredible athlete, but it is just such a
tough sport to break through.
Speaker 2 (02:00:13):
And then the college ranks. A lot of hype around
takes this quarterback arch Manning Philly famous surname of course,
and if you have a Payton and alife, what do
you predict for him? Bill Way? Might he end up?
Speaker 8 (02:00:26):
I do think he could end up in the same
place his grandfather played many years ago, which is New Orleans.
The Saints really don't look very good this year, not
much at the quarterback spot. The favorites to have the
worst record in football, which would get them the first
overall pick next year. In Arch Banning, I mean it
has to be impossible, right, I mean, when your grandfather
is an NFL quarterback, when your two uncles were Hall
(02:00:49):
of Game caliber quarterbacks. Really, since he was a child,
he has been destined to be the next great NFL quarterback,
and so he's getting his opportunities. He's gone an incredible
not just Typenning into the year. Didn't get off to
a great start. They lost to Ohio State a very
good defense in the opening to the football season here,
but certainly feels like if he shows what everyone expects,
(02:01:11):
he'll end up being in the first overall pick and
grand up sort of following in his grandfather's footsteps and
rebuilding a team in New Orleans.
Speaker 2 (02:01:18):
To finish, Bill my Son is a Minnesota Vikings saying,
can you offer him any strait of optimism for the season.
Speaker 8 (02:01:27):
Oh yeah, I mean now the team that won fourteen
games last year, when fourteen wins three losses, A very
imposing defense, very fun defense that is very aggressive. They
really love to rush the quarterback. And there's a great
unknown there in JJ McCarthy won a national title at Michigan,
a top ten pick, missed all of his rookie season
with a manuscus injury in his knee. But so it's
(02:01:47):
one of those things where you don't really know what
you have with quarterbacks when they come out of college football.
It is a great mystery box. And they if the
organization is right and they landed a superstar quarterback, the
Vikings could be one of the teams who compete for
a Super Bowl hardly out of Theram with possibility. Just
maybe don't head to Minnesota in December or January if
you want to.
Speaker 9 (02:02:07):
Value wonderful.
Speaker 2 (02:02:10):
