Speaker 3 (04:58):
In the show. They scored seven tries last night, including
five unanswered in the second half, to jump to second
on the ladder le on points with the Bulldogs. Coach
Andrew Webster joins us from Sydney just before the team
fly home. We'll be thanks for joining us. Make congrats
on the win last night. Was this your best performance
of the season.

Speaker 8 (05:18):
Yeah, maybe I'd say it was for sure from round
two mainly it was pretty good, but yeah, I thought
that was definitely our best performance where we put all
the pieces together, which is very pleasing.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
When you score forty points, obviously you're happy with the attack,
but are you just as satisfied, if not more, with
only conceding ten your second fewest points conceded this season.

Speaker 8 (05:41):
Yeah, definitely. I think our attack complimented our defense last
night and vice versa. I think we had to defend
our trial on and the end there for twenty two players,
and then we come up with in the set and
go the other way. I think we scored tries on
last place and kicks because our attack was so good
getting us down the field. So yeah, I think we

(06:04):
kind of piece, all ours of our game last night,
which complimented each other really well.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
You mentioned the end of the game there and the
try that you know that finished things off. You're already
well ahead by then. The result is beyond doubt. How
much pride do you take in the fact that you're
that you guys are still out there tackling and tackling
and tackling again.

Speaker 8 (06:25):
Yeah, and that's probably what I'm proud of, Snakes. I mean,
we talk about pride in our trial line. We talk
about the finish matters. If we were losing by fifty,
it still matters the end of the game. But to
be up by that score line and still be that
dialed in and that's focused on what we wanted to do,

(06:47):
and that is our standards and our trial in defense,
I was probably most proud of that last time.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
You're youngsters, you know, Lakahlisima, Jacob Laban, Dimitric Iamonger, Tannastars Smith,
Sam Healey. These are young guys where he was last night?
A bit of a coming of age for these guys
or has that already happened?

Speaker 6 (07:07):
No, I think it was.

Speaker 8 (07:08):
I I think it was there. I think it's been
working it out. You know, liked Dimetric He's He's minutes
have been up and down. I think he's been playing
really good football, but you know, he's I'm sure it's
very hard to work out how to play an NRL
when you're that young and have that consistency around his standards.

(07:30):
And senior boys have done a great job with them.
They've they've let them express themselves by themselves, and I
thought you just saw some really confident guys really a
lot about not trying to replace Darning. Just everyone's just
got to do their instead of trying to be something different.
And I was just really proud of the way the

(07:51):
young guys you developed last night. But I definitely think
it's off the back of some really strong leadership from
our experienced boys.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
Yeah, can I just pick up on that James Fisher
hair else. He doesn't seem to say a lot, even
in the Plastmates press conference. You know he chooses his
words carefully. But can you articulate his influence on the
playing groups since he arrived.

Speaker 8 (08:14):
Yeah, it's hard to do it, but because you have
to kind of feel it and see it. He kind
of just walked in the place, Fish and everyone's standards
changed just by walking in and everyone knew what he
was about. Everyone had heard stories about the way train
and his work ethic and what he does after training

(08:35):
with his extras, and that's just inpetious and I think
straight away people on the raise of the standards. The
best thing about Fish made is he's all about the
boys and the team, and he's all about these young guys.
And he's so passionate about New Zealand. In his words,
you get to play for his country every week. It's

(08:56):
pretty special when you've got a guy that feels so
passionate about it. And yeah, just rubs off on the
other boys.

Speaker 3 (09:03):
Yeah, I love that, and I try last night from
Dmitrix little deception and short pass. You know, do you
take internal satisfaction from your players providing eye catching moments
like that?

Speaker 6 (09:14):
Yeah, definitely.

Speaker 8 (09:16):
Like our game has been modeled on like hard work
all year, tight games, just our defense, and we've been
pretty probably conservative the way we're attacked to be fair,
but we kind of do the methods to our madness
and the want to slowly add to it. And like
Dimitry passing that ball to Fish is just a credit

(09:38):
to the how hard they work. On the skill level.
I thought we moved the ball and out of the artists,
out of our ownment really well at times when we
saw that the defense is really tight. So this little
part like that, we're just adding instead of you don't
want to be here this time of year, trying to
create a whole new way to play, We're just adding
to what we're trying to do.

Speaker 3 (09:59):
I understand. The decision to rule weight Eggan out was
made late yesterday morning. What was it that that kept
them out last night.

Speaker 8 (10:06):
He's just got he's just got some barren cord issues,
like wait, poor way for Harley. So mate, he's trying
to get up and playing. He's so brave and we
wanted him to play. And then in the end I
just thought, really, you know, I made the mistake last
year putting people out there. They were injured, and I

(10:27):
just didn't want to do it to such a good player.
And it's nothing long term and nothing to worry about.
But yeah, we just made a decision where we had
a really good option stand they're available, so they brought
him into the team, and I thought he did a
great job, but you know, just just yeah, we obviously
always won't wait in that thing.

Speaker 3 (10:48):
Of course. Yeah. But a special night though for Sam Haley,
wasn't it, you know? And it seemed like the boys
got around him.

Speaker 9 (10:53):
Mate.

Speaker 8 (10:54):
Honestly, yesterday when we you know, obviously let the boys
know that Seam was fine. They were so excited for him,
just wanted for wait. But yeah, and the boys got
around him, like you said, But I thought he's true,
he took his opportunity. So happy for him.

Speaker 3 (11:07):
What's this among the most satisfying outings in your entire
time as Warriors coach?

Speaker 7 (11:12):
Do you think?

Speaker 8 (11:15):
I probably haven't thought of it, aren't really, but now
that you yeah, we're got a long way to go,
so it's hard to me to get too excited. I
think when you have big wins in finals and stuff,
like when we're beating the Knights at home, that's probably
the biggest moment. But I mean, no one's going to
remember this if we don't, if we don't make the eight,

(11:37):
or we don't go on and when finals footy will
we won't remember this game, you know. But we're allowed
to city right now and enjoy it. So I don't
want to take that away from the boys. But yeah,
I don't know one way to go.

Speaker 3 (11:51):
Yeah, well, I can tell you everybody back here is
enjoying it. I can tell you that that won't come
as a surprise. So now now we're going to We're
going to wait a couple of weeks. I don't we
the buye? Good time, bad time for the buye. I mean,
Wade Egan's got another week obviously to get right. But
would you rather just keep playing?

Speaker 8 (12:04):
And I think it mean when you get when you
get the buys. I mean they've been on the road.
I think something like seven out of the last nine
weeks we've been away. I think someone told me this
morning we broke the club record. Nice win in Sydney. Yeah,
made the voice is a break, but it's a be
home with their families. So yeah, I'm happy for them.

(12:27):
But yeah, have you've got to have a buy at
some stage. And yeah, there's no reason why this is
not a good time.

Speaker 3 (12:34):
Hea a relaxing flight home. We'll we congrats on the
win last night. Mate. We'll look forward to Penrith in
a couple of weeks.

Speaker 8 (12:40):
I appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (12:41):
Thank you for that, No, thank you, Webbie. Thanks indeed,
Andrew webs are that I think they're at the airport,
just about to hop on a plane home. Yeah, terrific,
your chance to react now, see anything you heard there
or anything you saw last night? Our eight hundred and
eighty ten eighty. This wasn't just a win. This is
a hiding right. Forty points most have scored this season,
twenty eight unanswered second half points, seven tries, five of

(13:03):
those in the second half, and just ten points can Heed,
the second fewest they have conceded in a game this season.
No Mitch Barnett, no Weight Egan, no rock o'berry, no problem.
The next man up mentality at this club is there
for everybody to see. And the younger players in this
team are impressing with every passing week. Lekahalosima is nineteen,

(13:27):
Jacob Laban's twenty one, Dimitric Vaimonga is twenty one, so
is Tanner Stours Smith, Sam Healy his first art last night,
only twenty two. And then you find those who have
been around four a little bit longer. Charms Nicol Klukstar
at the back. What a season he is having. The
game management from Chanelle Harris, Ta Vita and Luke metcalf
right on point. They are growing into a very impressive

(13:51):
halves Combo James Fisher, Harris exerts a manner over the
side that is so clear and so obvious. He might
not say much, but his words clearly have power far
beyond their basic meaning. So ten wins now in twenty
twenty five, that's more than the entire twenty four game
season of twenty twenty four. Five straight wins in New

(14:15):
South Wales, the first time that's happened since the Warriors
inaugural season level on points at the top of the
Bulldogs well entrenched inside the top four. So now do
you believe them? Oh, eight hundred and eighty ten eighty
is our number, ninety two ninety two. If you would
prefer to correspond via text, let's talk some Warriors. What

(14:36):
did you think, Lyle.

Speaker 10 (14:39):
Oh, Look the number of close wins they've had and
even the close losses they've had this year. I think
there's bred mental fortitude that's required to reach the highest
cinnacle at this level. Having said all that, I think
it was like a made of mine that's connected to
the team said they need to come out, put a
team to bed and make a statement. While they put

(15:01):
Cronella to bed, locked the door in boltiple windows. I
just hope they've got the what all these young fellows
under good long contracts because of these new teams coming
into the competition, they're going to be looking very hard
at Give me an example, our press up here in Queensland,
it's best to be described as put it politely, gratifying

(15:24):
themselves over beating the Titans the seventeenth place side. But
in fairness and the press up here they're certainly growing
smoke up at the rear end of the Warriors as
well then Australian press, and they're saying they're no longer
the meal deal, they're the real deal and their every chance.
Look to win a competition, you're going to have a

(15:44):
lot of things aligned and the fair bit of luck.
But at the moment it's moving in that direction. Yes,
they're definitely capable of doing it, but one step at
a time they need to carry on. I think webs
have put it brilliantly. He says, there are changing things.
We just build on what we do because you want
to reach a peak at a certain time. What any

(16:07):
sports fan has as a right is that their team
goes out each week and puts on a performance. They
can be proud about They're more than doing that at
the moment.

Speaker 3 (16:19):
Absolutely they are. That's I mean, that's so right. And
I picked up on we be saying that as well.
I mean, so much of what he says you find
yourself nodding your head to He's such an impressive guy.
But you're lad he said. Is no point us trying
to do anything differently. We've got our base, which is
hard work. We work for one another. We you know,
we defend well and we look to take our opportunities

(16:39):
on attack. But there's no point us doing anything you know,
markedly different. We just build on what we have and
the base is there to see man, ten ones out
of thirteen. It's as good as it's been. I think I.

Speaker 10 (16:52):
Really thought that they would struggle about Barnett, to be honest,
and that's just my opinion. But if anything, well they improved.

Speaker 3 (17:02):
Yeah, it was a great performance. Long thanks for kicking
us off, mate, Always love chatting to you. Oh eight
hundred and eighty. A couple of techs coming through, but
I'll keep d Yeah, if the best way to get
your point across is on the phone, there is a
spear line, but they tend to fill up fairly quickly
on days like this when there's a lot of excitement
around the Warriors. Paul, glad you've called mate, what did you?

(17:25):
What did your what were your main takeaways last night?

Speaker 11 (17:28):
We get that point. I think you hit on the head.
There were a lot a lot of questions answered last
night for me. You know, even if you look at
the depth that we have, you know, if you look
at players that were, you know, under pressure, like Dallen,
I thought he had a good game. You know, our attack,

(17:51):
you know last week our Attech was was was good
and last night it was it was even better. And
if it keeps improving our attack and Metcalfs just he's
just getting better and better. You know, he's there, he's
unlocking you know, our back line better for our attack
and the options that he's he's taking a fantastic and

(18:14):
the combination he's got with th h T is just
getting better and better. So I'm very very happy this morning.
The book he's had the Sharks, as you know, long favorites.
Last night sold out Shark Park and the Warriors just
went there and just gave it to the mate. It
was fantastic.

Speaker 3 (18:30):
Did you did I'm not you you would have picked
up on this. I'm sure did Chanelle Harris dev to
do more kicking last night than he normally does on the.

Speaker 11 (18:37):
Sixth, Yeah he did. He did a good thing about
that half comparing is that he's a left foot kicker
and MICA's the right foot kicker. So it's a good,
a good variation to throw at defense, you know, and
it's and it's working really well. So Chanel's just getting
better and better and yeah, it's really pleasing. You know,

(18:59):
we don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves,
but absolutely, the Warriors this year are the real deal.
Here's no doubt about it. And when you look at
the New South Wales Cup team yesterday who beat the
Newtown Jets, you know some fastic, fantastic players coming through
in depth there at the club. It's just a really
good time. I mean, the Warriors have a really happy team.
You're loving playing with each other and that's similar to

(19:20):
what the Bulldogs have at the moment. So long mate,
continue mate, Yep.

Speaker 3 (19:25):
There's something going on there. So we'll see you at
at go media in a couple of weeks for the Panthers,
will we Yeah, I'll be there.

Speaker 11 (19:32):
I'll be there made of I'm a proud member and
no doubt it'll be sold out shortly. But yeah, I
mean it's going to be good. Look like where he said.
You know, the guys have been on the road for
how many weeks now and away from their families, so
now they get to rest up and they get to
play at home, back at home where hopefully we'll be

(19:52):
singing that team song at the end of the end
of the night.

Speaker 9 (19:54):
Mate.

Speaker 3 (19:55):
Good on you, Paul. Always love your calls. Mate, Thanks
for taking the time. Oh eight hundred and eighty Frank
with you after the break. There's a spear line there.
If we want to talk Warriors. You know, I think
Paul nailed it. They are the real deal. I don't
think we'd have to debate that anymore. I don't think
we have to say, hey, actually, do we have to
wait a bit longer to see if they are the
real deal? They are entrenched in the top four. This
is a top four team. It's just a matter of

(20:18):
what their ceiling might be. And the most impressive thing
for me anyway, has been how this next man up
mentality has manifested itself. It got to remember there were
you know, there were players missing for large parts of
the early part of the season. We didn't see Dellan
y Tenisalisniak and talking about round nine or ten. Roger

(20:39):
Tui Vasischek was out for a while, so was James
Fisher Harris. Now Mitch Barnett's gone, but you know, next
man up, Oh, eight hundred eighty ten, eight years and
let's talk to Warriors back after this on Newstalks.

Speaker 1 (20:51):
EDB the Voice of Sport on your home of Sport
Weekend Sport with Jason Tyme and GJ. Gunn Homes New
Zealand's most trusted home builder News Talks.

Speaker 3 (21:01):
Hebb coming up twenty nine to one, talking Warriors eight
hundred and eighty ten eighteen. He has that flag looking Frank.

Speaker 12 (21:09):
It's flying very wide and high. Jason, I will tell
you the flag is not a big one. It's only
one of those little handheld jobs. But never less. Anyway,
congratulations on your award the other night. You certainly deserve it.
Those two callers before me just about said it all.
But I will say my piece. There's always been something

(21:34):
kind of missing over the last you know, year or two.
In the first month or so, this and that piece
I saw it fell into place last night and the
piece was family. They're playing as a thirteen unit family,
with the youngsters stepping up and contributing with great passion

(21:56):
and fire in their belly. They want to stay in
there in those with like I'm talking about Healey Laban
van Olga. What was his name is Hala Sema? Well, wow,
what a player is Martin? I can't think of any others.
And then of course we've got Zelzanak and Klockstack and
James Fisher, Harrison Roger to a Marcus Cheft. I mean, god,

(22:19):
what a bloody team. Sorry, difficult to name a man
of the match, but my man of the match would
be Luke Metcalf. His kicking is a lot more improved.
His conversion kicking is kicking well, but getting into the
red zone. Those kicks he puts up, the height is right,
the angle is right, and I think there were three

(22:41):
tries that were scored by them. So although the others
were contributed brilliantly, I can't, I can't you know every
one of them, but I just feel that Luke he's
the marshal of that back line and he's just well,
he's brilliant anyway, we are the real dealers, they say,
but mustn't go to our heads with the load. The

(23:08):
road to the final is possibly going to be a
little easier, but hey, there's a fair bit of work
to do. And you know, I hope they all celebrate
this wonderful victory. I've never seen them play so well
in that second half. Got back to work and then
go to go Medium Stadium in front of their home

(23:28):
crowd and we'll just congratulate them, and I'm just so
so happy.

Speaker 3 (23:34):
Yeah, I am too, Frank, I'm ready. Yeah, you sound
like a you talk about a family. You sound like
a proud dad of these guys as you say their names.
I can I can feel the pride in your voice.
And yeah, I don't know who the official man of
the match was last night. I didn't do they even
announce that. I don't know, but I think there are
a number of blokes who could possibly have have picked

(23:56):
it up. I don't think it actually matters to them,
does it who the official man of the match is.
I know they have an internal one, don't they. That
probably means a lot more when you're voted by your
your fellow fellow teammates, as the as the player of
the As the player of the game, I thought Chance
Nicol Klukster had an absolutely superb game. You know, there

(24:19):
were suggestions perhaps that he wasn't the right guy to
play full back, maybe Roger should move back there, or
maybe Taine to Alpicki might be your man. But man,
he has been just terrific in that number one jumper.
Thanks for you call, Frank. I appreciate it very much.
Hey Craig, Hey.

Speaker 13 (24:38):
Mate, Hey, yeah, look, I'm loving it absolutely every minute
of it. But I've got a couple of concerns, and
I think that as we get on to the end
of the season, and you know, to be fair, we've
paid the Sharks, but we haven't paid the other guys
in the in the top four or five yet. My
My real concern is Daran and the right edge defense

(25:00):
and both the tries last night from the Sharks. If
you if you go back and look, he looks a
little bit confused, and I think he's come back and
he's really hasn't found the form that he's had not
so much last year, but obviously in twenty twenty three.
And I think because Charms is doing so well and
Roger's there and also, you know, a couple of the

(25:20):
other back three are doing well. It's kind of it's
hiding that a little bit that I think Dylan's really
struggling on defense, and that worries me when we start
coming up against some of the flashier teams with those
massive and very fast and clever outside backs.

Speaker 3 (25:38):
Yeah, it's a good point you make, and I'm sure
you know the win last night will certainly not stop
them from taking lessons. And I think you're right, Craig.
I think you're right. His edge does seem to perhaps
be slightly more fragile. You know, It's funny, isn't it.
He's been around for so long and we know Dlan,

(25:59):
you know, as an absolutely magnificent try scorer. But you're right,
you've got to play well on both sides of the ball.
And yes they have. You know, they haven't played the
Bulldogs yet. We wait for that game obviously, but they Yes,
they've lost to the Storm and the Raiders, the other
occupants in the top four at the moment, but everybody
below that, particularly Sharks, Cowboys, Dolphins, Broncos who make it
the top eight at the moment, they've beaten all of them.

(26:22):
So yeah, I think they're entreats in the top four,
but that doesn't mean they can't take some you know,
some improvement. And I think you've you've nailed one area.

Speaker 13 (26:31):
Yeah, I think the like the Ford's man amazing and
then the inside backs or good. But I was at
the camera game and the wet and apart from Charns,
the outside backs were completely absent, absent and it just
felt like that.

Speaker 7 (26:47):
And of course Wedby's aware of it.

Speaker 13 (26:48):
And I guess that if we can get that sorted,
especially on the right side, word, boy, it's going to
be an amazing end to the season.

Speaker 3 (26:56):
Or yeah, absolutely, I think And yeah, and I got
on your Craig, good to chat to you as always, mate.
I think you know, we don't have to say are
they you know, are they the real dealing anymore? Well,
this is a top eight side, you know, I think
we can we can write that down and pretty bold letters.
Now it's a top four side for me, But is
it is it a top two side? They haven't played

(27:18):
the Bulldogs yet, they've lost to the Storm and the Raiders,
so you say, okay, well, you know, quality opposition like
those two teams are obviously going to be there. I
think the top four is it sits at the moment,
may well be the top four that that could well
be in some order. How they finished, they've got a
bit of a jump on the rest now Bulldogs, Warriors,
storm Raiders. That feels like the top four, doesn't It

(27:40):
feels like the top four.

Speaker 9 (27:42):
How are you?

Speaker 3 (27:42):
Greg?

Speaker 14 (27:44):
Thanks? Pani yourself?

Speaker 2 (27:45):
Very good?

Speaker 3 (27:46):
Very good mate, Yes, very good today.

Speaker 14 (27:49):
Got to use those three words again, go on it, composer.

Speaker 3 (27:54):
The depth definitely, I think the next man up. I
mean that's the that's the yeah, that's the way of
describing the next man up mentality. And you look at guys, yeah,
like I mean Sam Healey last night, and these younger
kids have again Tennis Dowers Smith another another good performance
off the interchange last night. The depth is there, man,
I mean.

Speaker 14 (28:13):
And as you say, it's really showing through now that
you know we lost a few players at the beginning
of the season. We now lost Mitch Barnett. There's somebody
else to step into those boots and play a similar,
similar role without detracting anything from the rest of the
playing group. And I mean the defense, I mean any

(28:36):
team would love to have the defense that we have
at the moment they got the goal line defense. I mean,
I can't remember who it was, but there was three
guys on the right hand the edge that got between
somebody and the try line. Cranulla are not a small side.
I mean, there was a guy out there called I

(28:57):
think was it Aiden for Neua Blake.

Speaker 3 (29:07):
I've actually had a couple of texts asking the same thing.
I mean, obviously, first time the Warriors about to play
their former their former colleague since he went back across
the ditch. Yeah, I think we'll chalk that one up
to the Warriors.

Speaker 14 (29:19):
I think yeah, No, I mean, and the other couple
of big players that they've got out there, they were
just nullified. And I like the chance he's playing really well.
I don't really think we want to get too much
ahead of ourselves though, because it has happened in other years.

(29:42):
If we just keep a level head and obviously where
he's one of the most level headed coaches out there
and he just needs to instill that with the players,
as he obviously has. But we're marching in the right direction.

Speaker 3 (29:59):
We are marching in the right Greg. I love that.
I love that written. I've written that down. We are
marching in the right direction. Brilliant, We certainly are, and
it's okay. You're right, they're not going to get carried away.
They are a professional sports team who will not get
carried away. They always say, you can't ride the highest
too high or the lows too low. You've got to

(30:20):
treat triumph and disaster just the same. And that's the
secret of any professional sports team, because you can't win
every week. But we, as fans, we're allowed to get
carried away. I reckon, why can't we after a forty
points to ten win over the Sharks, another top five
or six side on their home patch. I think we

(30:41):
are allowed to today be excited about that, dream about
what it might mean in the overall context of the season.
As fans, we are allowed to ride the roller coaster.
The players and coaches can't. They got to stay level.

Speaker 6 (30:55):
We can.

Speaker 3 (30:56):
We're allowed to. Good to Chetty you Gregor is always hey, Matt,
very good, Matt, very good good.

Speaker 9 (31:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (31:05):
I think definitely the right edge defense.

Speaker 15 (31:07):
But I think that will I.

Speaker 7 (31:09):
Mean, we're just going to get rock o'berry fifth. I
think he'll make massive difference to that side. He's a
great defender, and I think we do miss him when
he's not there, I know, but he's not. He's not
playing many minutes at the moment throughout the year. But
hopefully that hamstring will come right.

Speaker 14 (31:23):
But it's been.

Speaker 7 (31:24):
My only concern is that we haven't beaten the top
four side and our goalkicking. That would be my consent.

Speaker 3 (31:31):
Yeah, kicking's interesting, is it with old Lukier? Like he
does a lot of good things and he actually was
he was better last night. I think he was better
last night and just what was he one, two, three,
four five. He converted five of the seven tries and
kicked a penalty. So he's getting the hang of it,
I think, Matt.

Speaker 7 (31:49):
Yeah, and I think the ones he's getting are very gettable.
It's the ones he's I think. Yeah. So I think
it's the concern is that he keeps He's just off
and he seems a confidence plan. I think the more
the more he plays, the better he plays. The viveryal
goal kick, I think he just he's one of those

(32:10):
guys that he just gets on a high and you
can't go wrong once once he's on that in that space.
But for me, the most exciting player out there is heally.
I thought he looked like to me, he looked like
a young Cameron Smith. He just had a beautiful pass
and just as running and able to spot when he
should run. He just seems and he seemed really to

(32:32):
know that position. I know he's only a young guy,
but I hope they find space for him in the team.
I think he can be a big part of our future.
He looked really exciting to me.

Speaker 3 (32:41):
That's a bit rap and but you're I mean, I
think as you heard where we say we always want
to have weade Egan there and he's been terrific for
you know, always gives you a consistent performance. But it's
so so gratifying to know, isn't it that even when
a guy is ruled out on game day, a guy
like Sam Healy can step in straight away, he gets
support wrapped around him and he comes up with a

(33:02):
performance like that.

Speaker 7 (33:04):
Well, it's I mean, for the first time I can
say in a long time, I feel like we've got
the right coaching team. They're doing something right. And that
all comes down to the coaches. If you can go
out there and you can lift players and you can
make them be better, that's to me, as a team,
a coaching team, you can build a really solid team
around and we haven't had that for a long time.

(33:26):
That you can feel that. So whatever we do by
the coach first, and everything else hopefully will come because
he's able to take these young a and een night yeap, sorry,
nineteen twenty twenty year old and get them probably doing
things they didn't think they could do.

Speaker 3 (33:40):
Yeah, very well, said Matt very Well said, great observation.
That's what coaching is, isn't it. You know, we know
that once a player reaches first grade, they're a decent player.
They've been good coming up, especially the young kids probably
they've been the best player in their team ever since
they started playing. But when they reached first grade, when
they reach the NRL, that's when you've got to wrap

(34:00):
around them an environment in which they can flourish. I
loved it when they flashed onto the coaching box last night,
just before the end, and Andrew Webster, Stacey Jones, rich
A Garr and the rest of them up there just smiling,
not you know, not absolutely euphoric, but just satisfied smiles,
having a wee joke with one another. Loved it, loved

(34:22):
it sixteen to one. David Allen please hold with you
right after this spieline there if you want to talk Warriors.
We're going to flick across the rugby after one, so
there's your chance. Oh eight hundred eighty ten eighty.

Speaker 1 (34:33):

Speaker 3 (34:44):
Thirteen to one. Thanks for holding, David. Good afternoon here, Hi,
I'm here.

Speaker 16 (34:50):
Excellent night last night. I'm really really enjoyed the Warriors.
We had a few people over and yeah, we had
a real ball watching them. I thought they'd played the outstanding.
They just continue to surprise me, so maybe I'm the
going to be prized anymore. But so then then there
was the Blues. Up to that, we just watched the

(35:11):
tail end of the Blues and saw the Blue snack
over the line against thee so that was good. And
then this morning blow me down we had at New York.
We had the stale GP and Peter Berling. He got
a second in the first race, eleventh in the second race,
which was a little bit of a blow up. But
then he came first in the third race, so overall

(35:32):
they came. They're leading that series, I think at the moment,
so tomorrow will be another day.

Speaker 3 (35:40):
But yeah, yeah, SALGP caught me out of it, David,
because I thought they were going to start at seven
thirty this morning, but from what I understand, there was
a storm coming, so they actually brought the racing forward.
So I got up obviously not not late later, but
I was in time to watch it from seven thirty
and then all of a sudden it was all over.

(36:01):
I didn't see anybody. Let to watch it back.

Speaker 16 (36:03):
Yeah, yeah, well you can fast forward between, can't you.

Speaker 3 (36:07):
That's all right, it's right, David. No, it's a good night. Well,
good night for you and the nine with the Warriors
and Blues both winning. Thanks for you, cool mate. Hello Emma, Hey,
how's it going? Very good?

Speaker 17 (36:18):
Yeah, great game last night.

Speaker 6 (36:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 17 (36:21):
The whole weekend successful failure sort of hinges on the
outcome of the Warriors game for me.

Speaker 7 (36:25):
So great weekend, that's good.

Speaker 6 (36:28):
It's good.

Speaker 18 (36:29):
I love it, I guess.

Speaker 12 (36:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 17 (36:31):
The only area of concern for me other than you know.

Speaker 19 (36:36):
Obviously those trickier caicks.

Speaker 17 (36:38):
For Metcalf, which I think will be really really critical
come finals time is tw Z's defense. He's you know,
got amazing attacking ability, but that defensive effort, like, we're
just wide open on that wing. He's dropping in so

(36:58):
far in that where yeah, we've just got a gaping
hole on that wing, and I think more clinical teams are.

Speaker 14 (37:02):
Going to capitalize on that.

Speaker 17 (37:04):
And also so there's a lot of work to be
done on his defense.

Speaker 3 (37:08):
Yeah, how coachable do you perceive that to be, Emma,
because I mean the I guess you'd say, okay, well
just don't come in, just stay on your wing. But
it's clearly not that simple. But how coachable do you
perceive that to be an improvement in his defensive work?

Speaker 17 (37:24):
It's a really tough one. You know, I would hope
it would, you know, you wish it was as simple
as just doing as you're told. And I guess he
just needs to have a bit more faith in the
players inside of him that that you know that they've
got the numbers and they can get there. I mean,
Charlesti or Clocks, that's defense is just phenomenal at the moment,

(37:44):
and like others than.

Speaker 19 (37:46):
Send he I think once Rocker varies back that will help,
but yeah, he definitely needs a bit of a.

Speaker 6 (37:51):
Bit of it on that defense.

Speaker 3 (37:53):
Yeah, I love the fact that your weekend hinges on
sporting results. I think that's tremendous. I love that just
the worrior is really just Okay, well you're all you're
all in on the West. You would have had you
had an interesting twenty twenty four then.

Speaker 17 (38:10):
Yeah, it was a pretty miserable.

Speaker 6 (38:14):
But here.

Speaker 19 (38:16):
Really looking forward to us to.

Speaker 17 (38:18):
Come as the young guys just amazing. Laban and a
couple of those other young guys here just really exciting
to watch. And the way that we got up in
defense and held them within their.

Speaker 19 (38:30):
Of the first three tackles was just.

Speaker 6 (38:34):
It's totally a different team. Yep.

Speaker 3 (38:36):
I agree. Hey, great to chat to your drive safe,
Thanks for calling and really appreciate it. May there be
many more happy weekends for you in twenty twenty five. Alan,
you get the last word today.

Speaker 20 (38:47):
Because yeah, really missing Steve Roach was there on last night.

Speaker 3 (38:54):
Steve Roach, I think I think Brandy was on the
call last night. Greg Alexander was the expert analyst. I
think from memory.

Speaker 20 (39:02):
Yeah, I'm really missing that, you know, hands on this
thing and they're out on the feet, you know, and
at the end he says, there's a big Warriors pack.
The other team is kind of just they know to
wait until there's twenty minutes to go, and then they

(39:23):
just rolled through the Warriors, you know, not more, not anymore,
not avenymymore. Our big young geruys just keep on going
and bowling the enemy over. You know, we get stronger
as we go on.

Speaker 3 (39:38):
Yeah. Well, and that Allen in itself is a yeah,
as a hallmark of this team. The fact that even
at the end and you know, close games, yes, they've
closed out the close ones this year. You look at
the number of games and we've talked about this a
lot on the show, the number of games that they've
won by single digit margins, and so that shows an

(40:00):
ability to close out the tight ones. But after the
result was well and truly in the last night, they
are still tackling late into the game, They are still
putting the effort in. They're still defending their line, you know,
like you say, they if they led a couple of
late tries and wouldn't matter, they would have won forty twenty.

(40:20):
But no, no, there's too much pride in this jersey
at the moment. They want to defend that line. They
wanted to go unbreached in the second half, which they did. Appreciate.
Corl Allen, thanks very much. Seven to one News TALKSB.

Speaker 3 (40:40):
Four to one from Mike, nobody's mentioned Adam Pompey. I
think he had a huge game on attack and defense.
We now have a solid all round team with good
depth in most positions. Thanks Mike, and Dale says Old
believe they're the real deal when they start beating the
other top four teams. Yeah, I think we all will, Dale,
I think we all will. Haven't played the Bulldogs yet,
of course, we wait for that game. Maybe we'll get engauged.
Then bye now for the Warriors before their next home game,

(41:02):
Go Media Stadium, same day as the Super Rugby Final
actually five o'clock and then Super Rugby Final to follow.
Speaking of which, Super Rugby. After one we celebrate the Blues.

Speaker 2 (41:17):
It's all on we James Forward.

Speaker 1 (41:19):
With Jason Vane on your home of sports.

Speaker 3 (41:25):
Hello there, this is Weekend Sport on News Talk, said b,
thank you for tuning in. The All Whites are minutes
away from a very significant result. They're playing in a
tournament in Canada, up against Cote de Voir or the
Ivory Coast, whichever you prefer, either way you say it.
They are forty first in the world Cote Devoir and

(41:49):
we are eighty six. We're ahead one nil into added time,
Eli just with the goal just before halftime after a
terrific throwball from Marco Staminich. So the All Whites are
defending this lead. I'd need to check, but it's been
a long time since they won a football match against

(42:12):
such an esteemed opposition as this, So let's hope they
can close it out over the next couple of minutes
and chalk up a win. They play Ukraine on Wednesday
morning as well. Ukraine are twenty fifth in the world,
so what a feather in the cap this would be
if they would have beat one of Africa's better sides

(42:34):
and then go on and perhaps repeat the dose against Ukraine. This,
of course, a year out from the World Cup next year.
The All White's already assured of their place. Of course,
they secured qualification when they beat New Caledonia back in March.
I think some people thought, okay, call, it's only Oceania.
What about when we come up against you know, some

(42:56):
more credentialed opposition. Well, that's exactly what this is. This
would be the most significant result I think of Darren
Baizley's tenure as head coach. Anyway, we'll keep an eye up.
An injury break at the moment, so I thought we
might be able to sort of stay with it until
it finished. We can come back to it. James mccony
this hour, I want to talk some Super Rugby because

(43:18):
the Blues have scored a try well after the hooter
to stun the Chiefs twenty nineteen and they must win
Super Rugby playoff match in Hamilton last night.

Speaker 16 (43:29):
The Blues porn's advantage against the Chiefs, killing the pool.

Speaker 21 (43:33):
They have another o.

Speaker 3 (43:34):
They yet cross qui a try, Bear's gonna try.

Speaker 14 (43:38):
Just beer'scort it.

Speaker 3 (43:39):
The beglar reaches out and dumps it down.

Speaker 4 (43:42):
It's nineteen eighteen with the kick to come all the
victory and it's all over.

Speaker 2 (43:50):
And the Blues have one.

Speaker 3 (43:51):
They have one. Indeed, Mintee. The Chiefs lead for much
of the game. They were ahead by thirteen at the
hour mark before the Blues stormed back with two converted tries,
the winner, as you heard there, coming three minutes after
the final hooter, courtesy of reserve lock Josh Berry. The
Blues so now though, we'll head to christ Church. They'll

(44:12):
face the Crusaders on Friday night. The Chiefs stay alive.
They'll host the Brumbies and Hamilton on Saturday night in
the second semi final. Blues assistant coach Greg Feek is
with us on Weekend Sport. Thanks for your time, Greg,
How was the drive back up the motorway to Auckland
last night?

Speaker 22 (44:28):
Oh yeah, it was a lot of smiles and excitement
about the week. The boys are pretty chilled at the
back by the end of it and just couldn't wait
to get into their recovery and prep. So yeah, it's
funny how things work out, and we knew we just
need to get into these finals and we were starting

(44:48):
to build. It was the start of the season was
an ideal, but that's all on the past now, so
we're excited talk.

Speaker 3 (44:55):
Us through the final few minutes from your view, you're
nineteen thirteen down attacking their line, the hooder goes, can
you pick it up from there?

Speaker 22 (45:05):
Yeah, we looked we looked patient with a confidence, we
looked physical, So we had the makings of snatching that,
you know, and and we've lost a few games this
year around, you know, like the same way.

Speaker 2 (45:21):
So it was great to be able to get that back.

Speaker 22 (45:23):
But you know, we just felt that, we felt the vibe,
could see it, and we were just wait until the
unfold and then there was penalty advantages going on, so
we had free We had free free cracks of the
line when it happens too. So we've talked about it
all year, but when we've got there, we don't need
to panic.

Speaker 9 (45:39):
You know.

Speaker 22 (45:39):
It's about being physical but being controlled. So it was
great to see that come through and get us to win.

Speaker 3 (45:46):
Yeah, that was so obvious from watching how how much
composure there was out there, how calm, you know, everybody
seemed to be in a pretty chaotic part of the game.
How crucial are the voices of your on field leaders
in moments like that.

Speaker 22 (46:02):
Yeah, I think the voices are crucial, but I think
it's backing ourselves and earlier in there, we're guilty of
probably a bit too frantic and throwing passes that weren't needed.
But when were like that, we've got a game, we
now to play it. We've been we've done this before,
and it just seemed at that point everything to slow them.
We're in a we're in a real flow state, you know,

(46:23):
and in finals that's what you need. You need to
take out the mental side of the game and just
be really clear and focused so that you can be composed,
so that that's going to you know, be awesome for
our confidence going down to which will be a tough
match against Crusaders.

Speaker 3 (46:40):
You want to pick up on that in a moment
at nineteen six down with fifteen minutes to go, did
you did you have faith still that you could get
the job done?

Speaker 9 (46:50):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (46:50):
It was concerned, you know, it was like fair enough enough?

Speaker 3 (46:54):
Yeah, yeah, yeah there all, you know, to.

Speaker 22 (46:56):
Be honest, and as a coach, you're thinking, but we
didn't get that. We didn't really get to far a shot,
you know, in that first half, and you would have
seen the stats. Territory position we hadn't had any didn't
get into their twenty two at all. So it was
sort of like, is this how it's going to end.
You know, we didn't really get to have a crack
at them, and then there's a couple of opportunities that
we missed, and then once we started going, it's like, well,

(47:19):
five minutes is a long time. Ten minutes is a
long time.

Speaker 2 (47:21):
You know.

Speaker 22 (47:22):
When when Damien missed that cap, it was like, okay,
well here we go, and the boys pounced on it
and we're hungry. So yeah, I mean, that's that's the
beauty of the game. And it was a I mean,
as a spectator, I suppose it was a great game
to watch.

Speaker 6 (47:36):
It was.

Speaker 3 (47:37):
It was here for those of us with no skin
in the game, You're right, it's compelling IM up off
the couch watching that game as if I've got in
some sort of investment in it, which I haven't. Just
on Damien McKenzie's miss penalty, you know, he kicked well
all night, but that would have taken them out to
what twenty two thirteen? Were you kind of willing that
one white has he kicked it.

Speaker 22 (47:58):
I didn't even watch it, to be honest, I'm not
going to. I'm not going to, you know, paint these
beautiful pictures of all the things you want to hear mate,
but I just didn't watch. I was like, oh, you know,
and we've been there. You know, we've seen that those
cats go over.

Speaker 2 (48:15):
We've missed some.

Speaker 22 (48:16):
But you know, and again, like I said, you know
the game that's when the whistle blows, is when it's over.
And I just love the fact that the boys just
kept going, keep going. Hoskins got done for crawling, you know,
and it's like, who cares, let's go again. The boys
are out there. Apparently the chat was really good, Like
you say, the leaders store part stood up with Body
and Riquae Warson, Dalton Hoskins. You know, they lied well

(48:40):
on our bench. Was was energetic, you know, so what
more can.

Speaker 21 (48:44):
The house for?

Speaker 3 (48:45):
Yeah, and provided the two tries, you'll be no doubt
reveling in the fact that too tight forwards scored your tries.
Have you been making that point today?

Speaker 2 (48:54):
Well, it was all backed last week.

Speaker 22 (48:55):
That's about you know. You can't have them score on
them all the time.

Speaker 9 (48:59):
That's good.

Speaker 6 (49:02):
That was good.

Speaker 22 (49:02):
Cudy Cutie was he dived in at ankle height and
got his and then Josh was outstanding and just kept
his body hide and he's a big man. He's powerful
and Georgie Lake kind of assisted him to get out
of the line. And those sorts of things are you know,
the boys will cherish and will definitely celebrate that maybe

(49:23):
tomorrow when boys come in with a with a six
day turn around.

Speaker 3 (49:26):
Now you mentioned the Crusaders. I'm sure you've heard the stats.
They've won thirty straight finals matches in christ here, and
I'm equally sure you'll be undaunted heading down there, won't you.

Speaker 22 (49:38):
You you hear this stets a lot of stats mentioned
you hear about, you know, I mean, that's a good one,
but in the end of the day, that's probably not
going to be the main motivator for us.

Speaker 6 (49:49):
You know.

Speaker 22 (49:49):
That's that's great, it's it's a for the Crusaders, it's great,
and for us it's like, oh yeah, but there's more
at stake here than just breaking a breaking a record,
you know. So we have a game to play and
I think for us, it's about planning our game, having
a performance that they can on us again and and
there's still a few things that we can get right.

(50:10):
You know, wasn't the perfect performance, So that's that's how focus.
But yes, the hell ofs that I know.

Speaker 3 (50:17):
It doesn't matter anymore, Greg, because you're in finals games now.
But why do you think consistency was so hard to
come by for the Blues in the regular season.

Speaker 22 (50:28):
I think I think there's a number of there's a
fifth factors. I think, you know, we had a New
Zealand a team and an all black team that were
all over with a few of our boys, isn't it.
They came back and and didn't really get the probably
the preseason that I would have liked of them got,
if you know what I mean. Like, so there was
a little bit of a stagnated start there, and then
we lost a few games in the last minute, and

(50:51):
I think then we just like I said earlier, we
probably just played a little bit frantic at times and
tried a little bit too hard, and you can't it's hard.
It's hard to sort of like, I don't know it
disciplined the boys on trying too hard. It's just pulling
it back and just going back to what works well
for us and keep getting better. And I think no

(51:12):
one's during the year has actually gone you know, I
lost confidence in what we're doing, and I think VC
has done a good job and resetting us and coming
back to what we're what we're good at, but also
growing our game at the same time. So yeah, there's
a few factors there. And we obviously lost a couple
of guys with Offer and Sam early on, but Josh

(51:34):
has stepped up, Leggy Louglan McConnell.

Speaker 9 (51:37):
Last he stepped up, Josh Berry stepped up.

Speaker 22 (51:40):
And yeah, and I think also our health is pretty
good too now, so you know, to win games, you
need players available, and so that's that's all part of it.
So there's a few factors. There's not always just one
or two things, you know.

Speaker 3 (51:55):
Yeah, and can I tak you about Josh fush tour.
He's played all fifteen games this year, started the last ten.
You reckon he might be all black this year.

Speaker 22 (52:04):
Look, I'm reluctant to talk about that stuff because so
you know, it's out of our hands, out of my hands,
and it's in his a little bit more than mine,
you know what I mean. So, and I don't want
to put any more pressure on the guy. There are
some good players knocking on that door, and you know,
he's done enough this year to show what he can do,

(52:26):
show he's shown massive potential. Well, his potential is still
there's no ceiling. I don't think, you know, he can
still get better. So I'm excited for his future, you
know what I mean, and for us to start with,
I'm excited for that any His professionalism has just accelerated
so much around his game off field, and yeah, so

(52:50):
whatever happens happens for him. But he's had a great season.

Speaker 3 (52:53):
You know, Well, you've all earned another Monday. I hope
it's a great week. Greg, all the best on Friday
night down in christ Church if you look to break
that thirty match trick for the Crusaders. Thanks for the
chat this afternoon, mate, No pleasure chess, No thank you, Greg.
Greg feak them scrum coach assistant coach of the Blues.
So they earn another week. They will face the Crusaders

(53:15):
and christ churchs least talk some super rugby eight hundred
and eighty ten eighty. The Blues title defense has finally
sprang to life, isn't it. For a long time it
was stuttering along. They won a game that they had
to win to stay alive, and they are alive, heading
to christ Church where they'll now attempt to break the Crusaders'

(53:37):
thirty match finals winning streak and reach what would be
for them a second straight Grand Final. Now, what impressed
me the most last night about the Blues was the
manner in which they did it, from nineteen to six
down with fifteen minutes to go, scoring a converted try

(53:57):
well after the hooter. They showed a resilience that was
the hallmark of their title winning season in twenty twenty
four and something that has been conspicuously absent, you have
to say in twenty twenty five until now. Now, next
weekend will be difficult as difficult, if not more so
than last night. But the Blues did what they had

(54:19):
to do to earn themselves another week and another week
for their departing players. Mark Talayer, how He Plumber, Ricky
Rickettali Adrian Choke. They're all going when the season ends,
and it was minutes away from ending last night. The
game itself very different, wasn't it from the round robin
rugby we've seen for much of this year. The first

(54:40):
try didn't arrive until an hour into the game, when
Daniel Rohna scored for the Chiefs and they went ahead
by thirteen, And at that point I thought, right, okay,
that's it. The Chiefs now will ease away and win
this game. But the Blues came right back. Kurt Eckland
mustling over. It was a six point game all of
a sudden. Key moment was Damien McKenzie missing his only

(55:02):
kick of the night, or the only one he missed
with five to go. It's a tough kick, it's wide out,
but even so that would have made it twenty two
thirteen and almost certainly eliminated the Blues only five minutes
to go, nine behind. They're not going to score twice
in five minutes. But back came the Blues, and it
seemed at the end actually almost inevitable that they would

(55:23):
find a way, and they did, Josh Berry crashing over,
Boden Barrett converting, the Blues celebrating their continued involvement in
Super Rugby twenty twenty five. Just a word on the
Battle of the Tens. I thought Boden Barrett outplayed Damien mackenzie.
He showed a calmness, a composure even when his team
was behind late in the game. He put them in

(55:45):
the right part of the field, allowed them to apply pressure,
and he kicked his goals. He just seemed like a
steadier hand. Last night than Damien mackenzie, and in a
game like that that was absolutely crucial.

Speaker 2 (55:58):
The Crusaders.

Speaker 3 (55:59):
The Crusaders, They're now super Rugby favorites, aren't they. They
were by far the most convincing of the four semi
finalists in their match over the weekend and they can
now win it without leaving christ Church, just like they
always used to. Twenty twenty four's in the Revue Mirror.

(56:19):
The Crusaders, I hate to tell you, are the Crusaders again?
I eight one hundred and eighty ten eighty.

Speaker 15 (56:26):
Hey, Mark, Yeah, if I was a chief of what
I'd be blaming you. I think you were waxing miracle
about Damien McKenzie statistics yesterday. You're blaming every Yep, you'll
say every time he plays. There were one hundred and
fifty percent of their games and look what happened.

Speaker 6 (56:43):
Yep.

Speaker 3 (56:43):
See I played by part. You see I played by
Part and they're downfall.

Speaker 15 (56:48):
You should have said something nice about the Brumbies.

Speaker 3 (56:50):
I should have. Yeah, that was a man.

Speaker 8 (56:53):
You know.

Speaker 3 (56:54):
I went to bed a bit grumpy after that. But yeah,
now you got to hand it to the bloke. You
got to hand it to the Blues don't you. I
mean they you know, they they were in the last
chance saloon. The Chiefs weren't and and.

Speaker 21 (57:04):
Here we are.

Speaker 15 (57:06):
I don't think that came into I mean, the way
the Chiefs defenders last night was just herculean up until
the last ten minutes, and they sort of controlled that
game through their defense, I thought, without standing. But the
tenacity of the Blues. It was like an old fashioned
test match at the end of the day, and the
Blues just never gave up, which is kind of different
for them really over but I mean, they are a

(57:27):
different team. I guess in the last two years, I
feel like the Chiefs are probably a little bit curse.
They just can't seem to get over the line. I
guess they've probably got an easier path with the Brumbies
next week. But yeah, I thought, given you know, watching
last night's games, I thought the Brumbies have to spe congratulated.
I thought they and that a lot of team of stars.

(57:48):
On paper, they probably shouldn't have been the Hurricanes, but
they just randed out. You know, They've just got a
simple game plan and they just really ground. They didn't
let the Hurricanes play the game at all. What did
you see the game or yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2 (58:00):
Yeah I did.

Speaker 3 (58:01):
Yeah, no, no, no, I saw it.

Speaker 7 (58:03):
I saw it.

Speaker 3 (58:04):
Yeah. When you say about I think you're right. I
think the Chiefs have an easier path. I think, you know,
the Brumbi's, much as they are very good in Canberra,
aren't quite as good over here. And I think, you know,
if the Chiefs needed to kick up the backside, they
certainly got it last night. They will not that I
think they needed one necessarily, Mark, you know, I think

(58:25):
you know they and Clayton McMillan said afterwards, Look, we
never even talked about the fact that this wasn't our
last chance, that a loss would not end our season.
We wanted to eliminate the Blues, and you know, I
think you know, and I think a lot of people
probably hope that too.

Speaker 15 (58:41):
Yeah, yeah, I mean it's gonna it's going to be
a great game next week. I mean, I'll certainly be
getting the popcorn ready for the Blues versus Crusader's sort
of an old school game that just could have promised
us so much. That's the weather can play part. But
you know, you've got to give it to those the
Blues forwards. They just just relentless, aren't they? And it

(59:02):
might be another might be the Backs don't get the
ball again maybe for the Blues and the and the
Blues just could you grind out a win against the
Crusaders and be interesting to see the odds when they
come out of this sweep the day it.

Speaker 3 (59:14):
Will And Mark, that's how they won Super Rugby last year,
not just the finals games, but like the whole season.
They were just so good upfront and then once they
established that platform, then the Backs got their hands on
it and you know, did score a lot of tries.
But you're right, last night wasn't like the round robin
has been for the most part this year with you know,

(59:36):
with defense on occasion optional.

Speaker 15 (59:38):
You know, it was a real grind no, no, yeah,
So who are you picking for the Blues against Crusaders?
Who do you think win that?

Speaker 3 (59:45):
I think the Crusaders will win it. That's how it feels.
I just feel like they're the Crusaders again.

Speaker 6 (59:50):
Mark.

Speaker 3 (59:50):
You know, like I said before, I just feel like
twenty twenty four just put a real fire under them.
And I watched them play like against the Reds and
it was only the Reds, I know. On Friday Night
it never felt that we were going to lose that game.
Never for a moment did it feel like they were losing. Yeah,
the Blues will.

Speaker 15 (01:00:09):
Be better than the rest of Yeah, I think Yeah,
I mean proved last night. The Blues are going to
be very tough to be I.

Speaker 3 (01:00:16):
Agree, Mark, I agree. I'll be all like you. I
have popcorn as well. No stake in that game, no
investments anymore. Lance's Ponty, I'm confused. If the Blues had lost,
who would have been playing the Crusaders in the semi final.
It's a good question, Lance. If the Blues had lost,
the Chiefs would have stayed top seed, the Blues would
have been second seed, and both the Brumbies and the

(01:00:38):
Hurricanes would have gone through, as the Hurricanes would have
been the highest ranked loser. So the answer to your
question is, if the Blues had lost last night, the
Crusaders would be playing the Brumbies in their semi final
and the Hurricanes would be off to Hamilton to take
on the Chiefs. But as soon as the Blues won
that game, the Brumbies Hurricanes game became sudden death and

(01:01:01):
it was the Hurricanes who came out on the losing side.
Corey James on the show, but later on the start,
then't let's get back to the line. So a padahama,
our hurricanes are gone, mate, They're gone.

Speaker 23 (01:01:12):
Piney. I was like, ah, stress free night tonight. The
chicksaw all.

Speaker 6 (01:01:17):
Over the top of the blues yep.

Speaker 23 (01:01:19):
And then suddenly about nine o'clock my anxiety level started
going through the roof. And but our first who tries Piney?
I was like, here we go.

Speaker 15 (01:01:28):
That's all good.

Speaker 23 (01:01:28):
And then I don't know eras.

Speaker 24 (01:01:33):
The Canes for.

Speaker 25 (01:01:34):
Thirty years have been susceptible to align our drive and
I don't know they were close to stopping to day
but they I don't know that was just with your homework.

Speaker 23 (01:01:45):
I found no one like stopping that. I know it's
easier said than done. But you see the Brumbies bringing
their bringing their backs and they get that extra momentum kick.

Speaker 9 (01:01:54):
But it's fund like we were the bit of too,
but lost.

Speaker 23 (01:01:57):
And also discipline too. The Brumbies discipline on their line
was really good. Owls not so much. But yeah, it
was there for the taking. But it's really just a
bit of a therapy.

Speaker 7 (01:02:09):
Call for both of us.

Speaker 3 (01:02:10):
They're pony to be honest, no, I agree, I know,
and I'm i'm I'm I'm reclining on the couch as
you speak. And I always thought we weren't it, you know,
because we've got you know, like we get to try,
and then they get to try, and then we get
to try. And you're right when Ruben Loves you know,
sliced through almost untouched to open the score and go
all right, well, you know this is good and and
you know, Billy practice having a good game, and we

(01:02:31):
seem to be in control up front.

Speaker 2 (01:02:32):
But you're right.

Speaker 3 (01:02:32):
It just you know, five tries. You can see five tries.
You're probably not going to win too many games if
you can see five tries.

Speaker 23 (01:02:40):
And and just just some of those moments when Duplas
gets that short ball in the gap and then I
don't know drops the brand shield and a bit of
space drops it. Rubin Ruben loves past that past that
he through and I'm like, where's that game?

Speaker 6 (01:02:55):
Bro?

Speaker 14 (01:02:55):
He's like, I don't know.

Speaker 23 (01:02:57):
He reminded me a bit of like Early Doors Jordie,
you know, brilliant and then a bit prone to the
old occasional shaker.

Speaker 3 (01:03:05):
But yeah, just decision making. A great season he has
and I mean you think back to my one in
Pacifica last week. You know, through that and set past
that allowed them to open the scoring, and you say, okay,
well cool, he is still learning. I think he's a
terrific prospect. Ribbon laughing. He'll be a magnificent player for
the Hurricanes for a long time hopefully, and for the
All Blacks turn.

Speaker 23 (01:03:23):
Ye, the besculp in the comp he has the best
goolkicker in New Zealand. Now he just puts those on
the right post.

Speaker 9 (01:03:29):
And tell them.

Speaker 23 (01:03:30):
I was like, oh, maybe that's maybe that's a good
uh uh anyway, right, that's it.

Speaker 9 (01:03:35):
I don't nothink.

Speaker 23 (01:03:36):
Hey, I watched them all ways though, so good on them.

Speaker 9 (01:03:38):
That was a good job.

Speaker 3 (01:03:40):
Yep, good stuff. And Padahama always loves channing to him. Yes,
the All Whites have closed it out. One n'll win
over Ivory Coast. Fantastic. It's half past one. Uh Jason,
Jamie with you right after this eight hundred and eighty
ten eighty talking super rugby on Weekend Sport.

Speaker 3 (01:04:04):
Twenty eight to two. Peter asks on text, Jason, if
the Blues and Brumbies win is the final in Canberra?
Yes it is, Peter, it is. I mean it would
be unexpected, wouldn't there? But yes, that is what would
happen if the Blues and the Brumbies win their semis
off to Canberra for the final blood the old days,
wasn't it, Jason?

Speaker 18 (01:04:23):
I mate, mate, good, Hey, thanks for explaining. Gee, you're
then one that good. I was trying to work out
when the Blues you know, got over line what the
heck it meant for the semis so that yeah, thanks
for explaining it. There was almost like you need of
women degree in mathematics to work it out. But look
on that it's a format that I'm really enjoying. It's

(01:04:46):
adding all this mistaque and you know, hight around what
goes happens where with the format compared to all the
other years, it's all rather academic. You know, Crusaders get
into knock the playoffs and they just win the thing
versus what could happen and what might have happened, you
know what we saw in the theater last night. So
it's you know, tepma hat to the guys. That's sort

(01:05:08):
of the format for this year's competition. I think it's
worked well.

Speaker 3 (01:05:11):
Yeah, I do, and I don't. Jason, I feel Look,
I feel as though if you lose a game in
a final series, you shouldn't be rewarded with hosting another
finals game the following week. I get the whole lucky
loser thing, and I you know, when you've only got
six teams, and I get the fact that if you

(01:05:33):
finish top you should get some sort of advantage with that.
But to me, you should drop to the bottom of
the rankings, not just one spot. So for example, after
last night, instead of being second on the rankings, the
Chiefs should now be fourth on the rankings. That's how
I would have done it.

Speaker 18 (01:05:50):
But isn't that what happens. Isn't it exactly the format
for NRL if you get a life, if you finish
top two, you get a life for it, or you know,
you just don't play the first week. Is that what happens?

Speaker 9 (01:05:59):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (01:05:59):
Yeah, it's deffinitely.

Speaker 9 (01:06:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:06:00):
NRL is different with their top A top six is
always a bit fraught with difficulty, and you know, the
most obvious top six for our finals format. Jas's is
one and two go straight to the semes, three v six,
four v five. The winners of those go to the semis.
But you know, and you get a week off. But
more often than not, and someone tweeted this yest yesterday, Apparently,

(01:06:23):
when when a team gets a buy straight into the semis,
there's quite a high percentage of them then losing the
following week because you know, they've had a week off.
They don't capitalize on momentum whatever it is. Most teams
will probably tell you they'd rather keep playing, so at
least under this format they do.

Speaker 18 (01:06:42):
Yeah, just look what happened to AFC to know about that? Yes,
you're right, yeah, no, I know I've got to be asked, mate.
I haven't been following all the games this year. I've
sort of taken a bit of a hiatus from Super
Rugby and I think I'm still I'm still basking in
the splendor of the a c C you know, of
their season, so I've joined up late. But what I

(01:07:03):
had seen in last week and this week I can
see why the ratings are so high for this year
is Super Rugby Marana pacifica obviously have cred a lot
as well. But no, I'm enjoying the format and can't
wait for next week.

Speaker 3 (01:07:18):
Matt good Man, Jayce, good to Chanty as always make
drive safe. Thanks for you call, Jamie.

Speaker 26 (01:07:23):
High great, Pinny, how are you going?

Speaker 3 (01:07:26):
Yeah? Good, thank you Jamie. What's on your mind?

Speaker 9 (01:07:28):
Good?

Speaker 6 (01:07:28):
Good?

Speaker 26 (01:07:28):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I didn't get to see I've only
got to see a little bit of the two Screws
game because I was enjoying the Warriors. But yeah, just
with but of course what's the Hurricanes and just yeah,
it's just just a bit of fuss frustrating. I mean,
they always seem they get to a quarterfinal, semi final
and then just not do the job. And I just

(01:07:50):
sort of think they're a team that's going up on
paper to to really challenge for the title and all
these these make a final in it. I mean, yeah,
what's your thoughts?

Speaker 3 (01:08:02):
Yeah, I mean last year they were the best team
in round robin, uh and came unstuck against the Chiefs
and the semi and that was just an other worldly
performance from Wallace to Titi among other things that that
kind of put pay to the last season. Look, they're
always they're always there or thereabouts. I can't remember the
last time they didn't make the finals, but yeah, it

(01:08:24):
just seems that that final step to the Grand Final
just seems to at the moment be beyond them. What
gives me optimism, I think is a Hurricane supporter Jamie,
is that they have built depth this year almost by
you know, because they've had to because they've had so
many injuries that they've had guys coming in, so they've
built some depth. They get Jordy, they get Jordy Barrett

(01:08:44):
back next season. They hardly lose anybody, so hopefully they'll
be better for having had this season. Look, I thought that,
you know, they came home with a wet sale and
round robin they won what five on the trot. I
thought they would go to Canberra last night and win
that game and that wasn't just the one eyed Hurricane
supporter of me. I thought they had what it took
to win that game. But yeah, unfortunately not to be.

Speaker 26 (01:09:07):
Yeah, there's yeah, there's just dis annoying. But then but
I mean, yeah, there should be still some good rede
you played for the rest of the season. Anyways, it
would be a couple of a couple of cracking matchups
just to say we're.

Speaker 24 (01:09:21):
Not on it.

Speaker 9 (01:09:21):
But yes, that's just how it is.

Speaker 26 (01:09:23):
Yeah, definitely next.

Speaker 3 (01:09:25):
Year, Definitely next year, Jamie. That's the spirit. That's the
very we can at least we I mean, if there's
a if there's an upside, we can we can relax
for the last couple of weeks and not have to
worry too much about about, you know, being invested in
these games. There's a there was a text that came
in before you hear it is from Kevin Point. He's

(01:09:47):
still spewing fifteen hours later. I'm now praying that the
Blues upset the Crusaders so we can deal to them
in the final. You see, that's the other possibility here,
right If the Chiefs speak the Brumbies and the Blues
beat the Crusaders, then we'll have a repeat of last
night in the Grand Final back in Hamlton. And I'm

(01:10:08):
sure a lot of Chiefs fans would quite like that opportunity.
They certainly would, because it would be in Hamilton. If
the Crusaders beat the Blues, which again is very possible,
they will host the final. They will host the final,
and we know what happens when the Crusaders host finals.

Speaker 6 (01:10:30):
Hello, Mark, good afternoon, Buddy.

Speaker 9 (01:10:33):
Your expert opinion, Buddy.

Speaker 10 (01:10:36):
Yep, I'll try if Goden Barrot has scored.

Speaker 23 (01:10:40):
That re enactment of the World Cup, try you think
that the game might have changed.

Speaker 18 (01:10:45):
At that time of the game.

Speaker 3 (01:10:48):
Well, that was in the first half, wasn't it that
when he sprinted away wonderful piece of skill, kicked it through,
ran forward, look to dive on it. Maybe one on
half time? Yeah, potentially, Look, it's I mean, i'd just
be I just spitballing, yeut, I don't be blue skying
on it. But yeah, potentially. But then I mean Cortez

(01:11:09):
Latima had a chance. He was over the line or
nearly over the line and knocked on, didn't he And
theyre actually a couple went There was another one as well,
when I think some penny few knocked it out of
it out of somebody's hands, So there were actually a
lot of near things.

Speaker 7 (01:11:22):
But yeah, yeah, that was a brilliant little chip over,
won't it.

Speaker 3 (01:11:28):
Yeah. I think they'd probably reflect back on it more
if they hadn't won the game, Mark, they'd go back
and say, hey, if only body had managed to score
that one, we might have won. Well as it happened,
they won anyway, So yeah.

Speaker 18 (01:11:42):
I've got a funny fit in.

Speaker 23 (01:11:43):
It could be a Brumby's Blues final.

Speaker 3 (01:11:46):
All right, fuck well, well wait and see mate, it's
a possibility. It's one of what four possibilities, isn't it
that we could have that. I think we're headed down
the line of a Crusaders Chiefs final in christ Church.
That's not a particularly bold claim, I know, but I
think that's what we're headed for nineteen to two. Let's
take a break when we come back. James mc and

of my entry. Actually, in fact, all I did was
just sending Albert from every Sunday.

Speaker 9 (01:12:40):
Really. Oh so it's my award.

Speaker 3 (01:12:42):
I think we can share it. I think that's fair.

Speaker 9 (01:12:46):
No, that's fine. Look, I think it was great. I
mean the Agenda podcast that I do with the acc
that was beaten by Mile Boss Rex Alito was a
sports cafe, so you know, it was one of those
nights where I just had to sort of eat apple
pie and you know me, I love pies.

Speaker 3 (01:13:02):
Well, I did enjoy catching up with you, you know
when normally just talk on the phone, but the chance
to chat about various things was something I really enjoyed.
But can we do it around a more structured basis
as we normally do on the radio and start with
Super Rugby. How are you feeling about last night's action?

Speaker 9 (01:13:21):
Great? I think it's a perfect result. The Chiefs lost
and they avoid the Hurricanes. This is the best news
the Chiefs have had for some time.

Speaker 8 (01:13:30):
I know that.

Speaker 9 (01:13:31):
You know, the Blues got up and good on the Blues.
I was actually a great game. It was a thrilling
the end in some clutch moments, but just knowing that
the Hurricanes are the team that beat the Chiefs just
about three four weeks ago by eighteen points, so by
avoiding them and having to host the Brumbies, I think
they've won.

Speaker 3 (01:13:49):
See that is the way to find a silver lining.
I love it.

Speaker 14 (01:13:52):
I love it.

Speaker 3 (01:13:53):
And then you look back to when the Chiefs have
played the Brumbies, which was quite near the start of
the season, and they nearly put fifty on them. So
you're basically in the Grand Final already, exactly.

Speaker 9 (01:14:03):
That's why I'm looking at it, poney. And look, I
know for weeks you've been baiting me, trying to talk
up the Chiefs and stuff, and I know that you're
a master beta, but I'm not going to fall for it, Poney.
You can bait me all you like I've been saying
it all Yeh, the Chiefs are just okay. We have
to wait to the playoffs and I think they've got
a few issues up front, and the crack started to appear,

(01:14:24):
although it didn't help having Luke Jacobson eliminated at the
last in the eleventh hour. So he is a huge loss.
You lose your captain and you lose your whole loose
forward trio mix.

Speaker 3 (01:14:37):
Really yeah, he has been big for them, hasn't he
really really good? And yet it was late to wasn't it?
Was it like on match day? So you've done the
entire week's prep and all of a sudden you don't
have a pretty significant member of your team. So Brumby's
come to Hamilton next weekend. I'm not baiting you. Surely
you'll win that well.

Speaker 9 (01:14:57):
I don't mind your baiting, Pony, because it's what you
do so well, it's your job as the host. But
I think I think the Chiefs can roll the Brumbies.
I really don't care who. Out of the Blues and
the Crusaders. I would say the Blues just sort of
getting their act together nicely. Hoskinsitutu playing, you know, starting
to show that championship pedigree of last year. Is an

(01:15:19):
awkward year because I know he's been trying to leave
New Zealand Rugby. They've kept him here. I think that
even if he plays the house down in the playoffs
for the rest of the playoffs, he won't get pack
for the or Blacks because I think he doesn't want
to play for the or Blacks. That's my feeling is
that he will say no even if Fraser says you're in.

(01:15:39):
So that'll be quite an interesting situation to monitor for Hoskins.
But that try where he was crawling along the ground,
I mean, I know that was disallowed, but I'm pretty
sure they would have given Ardie that. You know, I
just feel like he's didn't ever quite the supercised star status,
you know.

Speaker 3 (01:16:00):
Yeah, I agree. It's like it's like sometimes Leonel Messi
gets gets fouls again that other players, you know, just
get the big play on from the referee. So yeah,
now maybe there is a status thing here. Hey, well,
did you get the chance to watch the Warriors? Well,
I mean, I know you were involved in the coverage
of the of the Chiefs against the Blues. Have you
had the chance to catch up on the Warriors went

(01:16:22):
over the Sharks?

Speaker 9 (01:16:23):
Well? No, actually I took the night off the Chiefs,
off the a SEC Alternative commentary because I knew that
the Blues are going to get up you see Pony,
and so I didn't want to be there for that.
But it was I did watch the Wars and to
be honest, they just they're a well oiled machine. And
there's two things I was going to talk about. One
is the emergents of Lecqua Halasima. You know, when the

(01:16:45):
Australian commentators start to call them by his first name,
that they even they appreciate that this kid is going
to be a superstar. He's nineteen years old, you know,
straight out of tongue. He's just freakishing his ability and
you know, seems to be able to. He's a trimagnet,
right yeah, yep. That's one thing. And the other thing
I was going to say is watch this space. Sky

(01:17:08):
Sport has a new League show with Sean Johnson as
the host. League Lounge with Sean Johnson, sponsored by Ford
and it's going to be on Wednesday nights. I think
eight eight thirty. I'm going to get killed for not knowing,
but that'll be on Sky Sport and it's amazing getting
somebody who you can tell speaking of Ozzie's identifying talent,
Seawn Johnson's all over Fox Sport right now.

Speaker 3 (01:17:30):
Yeah, he is. They love him, don't they. They absolutely
love the man. And you know, I'm looking forward to
watching that as well. I've seen the promos, so now
looking forward to to watching that. And you're right about
about Lecqua. It's like Roger, isn't it. You only need
the first name, that's right.

Speaker 9 (01:17:43):
They know they know he's a star, and so do
we and I think, you know, Webb Andrew Webster deserves
a lot of credit for the way he's managed him.
He hasn't thrown him at all the time. He doesn't
start every game. It's really nicely done. So a long
may at last, because it just feels like with Leka,
we've finally got that cutting edge. There's something out of nothing,

(01:18:04):
guy who can break the l and some of those
other youngsters. I noticed Jacob Laban starting to do the same,
so you know they're really young kids.

Speaker 3 (01:18:15):
Now a year from now, the All Whites will be
at the World Cup in Canada, Mexico or the United States.
This morning. In fact, in the last couple of hours,
they've beaten Cote Devoirs the Ivory Coast, a team ranked
forty first in the world. We're eighty six. They've beaten
them one nill significant result. This is the kind of
thing that could happen at a World Cup. We might
get drawn into a group with somebody like Ivory Coast.

(01:18:38):
It's a really significant result. This isn't it.

Speaker 9 (01:18:41):
I know, I was just I've just been watching it
and I need to defer to your expertise. Pine Out.
We're coping by our Ivory Coast at the strongest. Because
I saw a couple of stars on the bench. I noticed.

Speaker 3 (01:18:53):
Yeah, I mean, I don't think they were greatly depleted.
I must have better. I've sort of been trying to
do a radio show as well, so I wasn't keeping
the bosses listening. I wasn't watching the football. I was
doing the radio. But ye, I think, but they weren't
a bad they Certainly there's no bad Ivory Coast team.
I don't think so. And Chris Wood only came on

(01:19:14):
with about ten minutes to go for us. So there's
our best player playing a minimal role exactly that.

Speaker 9 (01:19:20):
And also Eli Just, we need to talk about this
guy because he should be a household name. I know
he isn't a household name really, but he scored the
goals dam and it took the three ball. Eli Just
is a legitimate international star, emerging star. He's from Parmerston, North,
He's a Parmi Boys kid. I think he's a wee fellow.
He's about sixty five kg's dripping wet. He's I think

(01:19:45):
his mum's Chinese. He's kind of come through the system
in New Zealand all the age group teams, but ended
up over in Europe and Denmark. Is he playing in Austria?
Piney you can correct me if I'm wrong.

Speaker 3 (01:19:56):
He is playing in Austria, bang on yep.

Speaker 9 (01:19:59):
So there you go. And so that's Eli Justine. If
you're wondering what's so good about him, I think he's
just got well, he's he's accurate, he's good off both
both feet. But he's just got composure. You know, you
see him on the ball. This was really comfortable and
it's been a while since we've had you know, I'm
not I don't want to compare him to you know,
Le Migna male, but just when you see someone who

(01:20:21):
comes through and just looks like they belong at that level,
that's what Eli Just's like.

Speaker 3 (01:20:25):
And eight six goals in his last seven matches. Hi,
just to finish, do you remember talking to me about
Oli Mathis on Thursday night?

Speaker 9 (01:20:32):
Yes, Oli Mathis. Let's talk about this generational talent who's
kind of gone into the wilderness, well literally because he
loves hunting from why he loves to go up into
the bush and do that sort of thing. I think
he's there this weekend, but anyway, he is. He's played
for New Zealand sevens, didn't get much of a run.
He's the guy had come on in the last five minutes.
But that was a big call for someone who really

(01:20:54):
looks like he shot out of a cannon. An incredible
loose forward on the lighter side, but not that small,
similar probably to Henry Pollock, you know, the lucy open
side from Northampton. He's just made the lion. So my
question is, Pony, what are we doing with this talent?
It just seems he's twenty years old, he's about to

(01:21:15):
go to the World Cup. But I just feel like
we should have seen them maybe have a go at
Super Rugby. Are they protecting him because he's not the
biggest Well I look around there are you know, there's
lots of players who aren't necessarily massive. But this talent
that he's got needs to be harnessed. And I think
Wayne Smith, when he went down to Why He Club

(01:21:36):
about six years ago, said to them your best player
is this fourteen year old. Now, when the professor says that,
there should be alarms going off at New Zealand Rugby
headquarters saying Smith he's found one. The professor has found
you know, he's struck gold and why he So let's
just see what happens here. He will play n PC
for the movies, but not yet attached to a Super

(01:21:59):
rugby franchise, although he did get a bit of training
and with the Crusaders recently and the White training group.
He please don't let them go to the Crusaders.

Speaker 3 (01:22:10):
No, we can't let that happen.

Speaker 11 (01:22:12):
I do have to go.

Speaker 3 (01:22:13):
James. Great to chat as always, James McConney seven and
a half to two, two o'clock News next, and then
we're back with our last hour golf, sal GP, Tennis
and more.

Speaker 1 (01:22:21):
Rugby the only place to discuss the biggest sports issues
on and after fields.

Speaker 2 (01:22:28):
It's all on week James Ford with Jason Vaide on
your home of sport, US Talk.

Speaker 3 (01:22:36):
Seven past two. Thanks for tuning in. This is Weekend
Sport on News Talks headb Andy McDonald's show producer. I'm
Jason Pine. We're here till three. Then to Beverage on
Sunday's edition of the Weekend Collective. To take this through
till six before we can hand over, but to get through.
Corey Jane, assistant coach of the Hurricanes. With US out
of Canberra, their season came to a rather sudden end

(01:22:59):
last night at the hands of the Brumbies. How does
he reflect on that, Corey Jane and what does the
future look like for the Hurricanes. Also going to check
in with Ian Francis. He's the chief executive of Auckland Cricket.
Because they're moving to Colin Maiden Park. They're moving their
officers there. There's going to be all whether training facilities,
broad are broadcast infrastructure, refurbishment, about twenty two million dollars

(01:23:23):
worth of an investment. Colin Maiden Park's going to become
a sporting precinct. We'll find out more about that. Filled
Tartodgey on Ryan Fox Live Mackay from the Black Foils
after their first day of racing on the Hudson River
in the New York Leg of Sale GP. Some tennis
for you as well. Our lines of communication are always open,

(01:23:44):
Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty. We'll get to
throw on the phones nineteen nine two via text Emailster
Jason at newstalkseedb dot co dot nz. But as we
always do to kick off the two o'clock hour, it's
time to get you up today with a few things,
some of the things you might have missed. In case
you missed it is what we call it. We start

(01:24:04):
in the Nral. We know all about the warriors terrific
win over the Sharks. I'm sure you hadn't missed that.
But then the Broncos put on a similar clinic against
the Gold Coast Titans. Three on the left, three.

Speaker 2 (01:24:17):
On the right, whilsh scurries over to that left.

Speaker 5 (01:24:21):
Lad last days by that special gruslass.

Speaker 2 (01:24:26):
That's race us matic.

Speaker 3 (01:24:28):
A forty four fourteen win for the Broncos. The All
Whites have beaten Ivory Coast one nill in their Canadian
Shield football match in Toronto. Eli just with the winner.
That's ani at pass just just takes the lead for
New Zealand. Well that's it gets the run of play.

(01:24:49):
Wonderful pass from Marco Staminis to his old made Eli
just New Zealand winning at one nill. There was also
the score when England played Endra in their World Cup
qualifire this morning.

Speaker 5 (01:25:00):
Kane good saved by Albarez Madewaki.

Speaker 3 (01:25:03):
Kane makes the breakthroop.

Speaker 11 (01:25:09):
In the fifth minute of the second half, England's captain
Shamley breaks the deadlock.

Speaker 3 (01:25:15):
YEA a little bit underwhelming that Harry Kane gold the
only one of that game to ice hockey. The Florida
Panthers have leveled the Stanley Cup Finals one one with
a double overtime wins. We'll be in skinner ver she is.

Speaker 2 (01:25:33):
What's you finished?

Speaker 5 (01:25:34):
Doors whims Game two for the fair Thursday double overtime.

Speaker 3 (01:25:41):
Ryan Fox will be part of the last pairing in
the final round of the PGA Tours Canadian Open at
TPC Toronto tomorrow morning. He's cart at a third round
six hunder par sixty four.

Speaker 2 (01:25:53):
Rand Fox over in the fairway at nine.

Speaker 3 (01:25:57):
Don't want to miss left.

Speaker 2 (01:25:59):
Oh that's tremendous.

Speaker 3 (01:26:02):
Wow, what a grand front nine and a wonderful round
from Ryan Fox. And finally to the Supercars and Perth
series leader Brock Phoenie picking up another wind. But the
afternoon belongs to this young man.

Speaker 6 (01:26:16):
So Feenie has done a string job today.

Speaker 9 (01:26:19):
Just sticks together.

Speaker 3 (01:26:20):
He's championsick season and he's cut home by a margin
of one and a half seconds over his teammate Brown.
He extends his championship league good the process faultless before.
That's from him this afternoon. But the real story out
West came in the early race with a maiden win
for a young Kiwi. Feenie has done a string job today.

(01:26:40):
Just sticks together.

Speaker 12 (01:26:41):
He's championshick season and he's cut home by a margin
of one and a.

Speaker 6 (01:26:45):
Half seconds over his teammates were brown.

Speaker 22 (01:26:47):
He extends his Championship League good the process faultless before
that's from.

Speaker 3 (01:26:52):
Him this afternoon.

Speaker 1 (01:26:55):
The scoop from the drag Fields and the Court on
your homes Sport, Weekend Sport with Jason Vine.

Speaker 3 (01:27:01):
News Talks in B, News Talks HEREB and Weekend Sport
eleven passed to. The Hurricanes have been knocked out of
Super Rugby, going down thirty five twenty eight to the
Brumbies in Canberra last night.

Speaker 4 (01:27:13):
Smashing their bodies at the line a meter short left
of the left hand up rights. How much longer can
the Hurricanes hold on? Slipper goes over scores a try.
Not much long for these runser to the left and
the left hand up rights on the hour mark makes
it thirty three twenty one. Kick to come, old man

(01:27:35):
Slipper gets his team closer to a semi final spot.

Speaker 3 (01:27:38):
Yeah, and the Brumby is earning that semi final spot.
They'll take on the Chiefs in Hamilton this coming Saturday night.
For the Hurricanes, their season is over. Assistant coach Cory
Jane joins us. Corey, thanks for your time. You'll have
woken up, no doubt, a bit deflated today with your
season now over. What are your initial reflections on the
game against the Brumbies last night.

Speaker 6 (01:28:00):
Yeah, yeah, guttus, Yeah, I thought we came, we chained, well,
we came over here a good night tip too.

Speaker 2 (01:28:06):
You know, it came more and won, and.

Speaker 6 (01:28:11):
Yeah, it disappointed that that we weren't able to and uh,
you know, we did the moments where we looked a
rod and then there was moments where if we gave
them what they were really really good at and it's
set peace inside our twenty two and and the Brumbies
took advance of it.

Speaker 3 (01:28:30):
Where specifically do you think they had the edge? I
mean you just outlined, you know, inside your red zone.
I guess you can call it was that kind of
where you think they had a specific edge over you.

Speaker 6 (01:28:40):
Yeah, well we uh uh, you know, did a bit
of steps of ben nealysis on on beer strengths and
and a lot of it was offline out off set
peace and especially once you're stuck in them down to
the the twenty two's close to the goal line, that's
where they live, and I thought we did a good
job on on stopping them around the middle of the
field and and now that part and you know, allowed

(01:29:03):
them too much access to to get to their strength,
which is they're more you know, picking goes and being physical.
And that was through not catching our kickoffs a couple
of times and then just super penalties that, yeah, let
them in there, and we made life hard for ourselves.

Speaker 3 (01:29:23):
Yeah, five converted tries against four converted tries. That was
back and forth. Lead changes here and there. Didn't in
the second after it always feel like you were chasing
the game a little bit.

Speaker 21 (01:29:35):
No, it didn't.

Speaker 6 (01:29:37):
We still thought even with twenty minutes ago that we're
still we didn't get maybe a few cars that we
were hoping to be from the ref and that was
a little bit a little bit frustrating, but it didn't
actually well in the box. It didn't feel like, you know,
we're a panicant and had to chase it.

Speaker 3 (01:29:57):
So I mean, do you do you review last night
or do you just now put a cap on the
season and look ahead.

Speaker 6 (01:30:06):
Some stage will have to We won't do it as
a as a group at the moment, but some stage,
just as coaches, we have to pick up our little
boy pants and and look through it and just get
a feel for what we're wrong. And then obviously we'll
be looking at our season anyway. And you know, it's
disappointing to with some downs all year and a few

(01:30:29):
niggles and injuries.

Speaker 21 (01:30:30):
That we fought through it and get ourselves a taunts
at the end, But yeah, disappointing not to get past
the Bumpies and Canberra in the quarterfinal.

Speaker 3 (01:30:40):
You keep the vast majority of your squad dough for
next year. You get Jordy Barrett back. You reckon this
team can take an extra couple of steps and really
contend in twenty twenty six.

Speaker 6 (01:30:50):
Yeah, I think how doesn't listen of the pleasing sight,
you know, as they are young and and we aren't building.
It's it's you know, trying to get better as coach,
is trying to be better as you know, as planners,
and obviously there's a small won't know and and super rugby.

Speaker 9 (01:31:08):
And you know we might be in there that part.

Speaker 21 (01:31:11):
We're just gonna, you know, continue.

Speaker 6 (01:31:14):
To brow our players and and us as coaches and
and hopefully nixt you know, we can we can be
better because you're right the put have come ups and in.

Speaker 3 (01:31:25):
The squad, and in a couple of weeks they'll be
an all black squad named. Do you expect to hear
a few Hurricanes names in the list?

Speaker 6 (01:31:33):
I hope so.

Speaker 14 (01:31:34):
Uh.

Speaker 6 (01:31:36):
You know, these guys and the team that have stayed
really really good, and I think that the most end
our sup has probably been duped. I think he's seen
our standing as a as a player but also as
a leader. So yeah, I think it's course for him
because he deserves it.

Speaker 3 (01:31:57):
Indeed, I don't think you'll get too many arguments on
that one. Commiserations on last night, c J. Thanks for
always being accessible to us across the season. Safe travels, Mate,
cheers Mate point one, see you let us a j
Thanks indeed, Cory Jane, assistant coach, understandably deflated after their
exit last night at the first Finals hurdle, going down
to the Brumby's thirty five twenty eight in Canberra. So

(01:32:19):
the Brumbies have earned themselves a trip to Hamilton. They
will take on the Chiefs on Saturday night. That's five
past seven. That's the second of the semi finals. The
first is on Friday night at Apollo Project Stadium. In
christ Church when the Crusaders will host the Blues, So
Crusaders Blues Friday Night, Chiefs Brumby Saturday Night, both at
five past seven, both on Gold Sport and IHEUT Radio.

(01:32:43):
Our commentary teams will be preparing themselves now to call
these two semifinals, and so there are three possibilities for
the grand final location as well. If the Crusaders went
on Friday Night, they will host the Grand Final. If
they were to lose, then the winner of Saturday night's

(01:33:03):
second semi would host the final against the Blues. So
we could be off to christ Church for the Grand Final.
We could be off to Hamilton. We might even be
off to Canberra. We will preview and review all of
it for you on Weekend Sport next weekend. It is
seventeen past two Weekend Sport. The Ottoque Local Board has

(01:33:27):
supported a proposal to reinforce Colin Maiden Park in Auckland
as a regionally significant sporting precinct and the home of
cricket in our biggest city. The proposal underpinned by a
twenty two point three million dollar investment that will see
Colin Maiden Park host Auckland Aces and Auckland Hearts matches.

(01:33:48):
The development will also feature modern all weather training facilities,
broadcast infrastructure and the refurbishment of existing buildings to serve
as Auckland Cricket's new offices. Auckland Crickets CEO is Ian Francis.
He joins us now Ian the seams very significant, house significant.
Is it having local board support for a move to

(01:34:10):
Colin Maiden Park?

Speaker 23 (01:34:12):
Yeah, thanks very much, Jason. Yeah, we're pretty excited to
get the approval from the Aducky local boards that have
been very supportive.

Speaker 9 (01:34:19):
Of this move.

Speaker 23 (01:34:21):
And yeah, to build a domestic venue for and modern
facility as you outlined there for Auckland Cricket will be
great for us.

Speaker 3 (01:34:29):
Tell us a bit more about the vision for the
sporting hub at Colin Maiden I outline as I say,
training facilities, but a broadcast your offices obviously, what is
the vision for Colin Maiden Park.

Speaker 23 (01:34:39):
Yeah, so for Auckland Cricket, this will mean a modern
domestic facility that we can run our high performance teams
off but also have the local community sport which is
really important to the Idacky local board. So the facilities,
the facility of Colin Maiden Park is a multi multi
sport facility will be one of a number of sports

(01:35:01):
there and so it's quite exciting to think that, you know,
we'll be based there.

Speaker 3 (01:35:06):
Are we looking at something similar to what's you know
already on off at Mount Montanery Bay Oval at Seddon
Park and Hamilton Hagley Oval in christ You are they
kind of the blueprints for what you're looking at?

Speaker 21 (01:35:17):
Correct?

Speaker 23 (01:35:18):
Yes, So Iraqi Local Board are very keen to remain
retain the community feel, so we will support that and
in terms of the facility, the facility will be available
for community usage as well, so have a similar feel
to those their news.

Speaker 3 (01:35:35):
Obviously, people in Auckland will be familiar with where Colin
Maiden Parker is, but those outside of the city may
not be. It's in the eastern suburbs. How easy is it?
I know Auckland traffic can be can be challenging the
best of times, but how easy is Colin Maiden park
to get to from other parts of the city.

Speaker 8 (01:35:53):
Yeah, so you are right or from?

Speaker 23 (01:35:55):
Traffic can be can be an issue anywhere, right, So
you're located in east and suburb's been the home of
Auckland University CREUK club for close to fifty year is now,
so it is accessible to Auklanders.

Speaker 3 (01:36:10):
And in terms of player feedback, presumably they have been
across this news. Are they in a positive frame of
mind about having a new home, a new official, permanent home.

Speaker 9 (01:36:22):
So we've we've probably.

Speaker 23 (01:36:24):
Long signaled our intentions to develop facilities that allow the
game to grow and try it and that includes modern
facilities for our players and for our community. So we
believe this protects us for the for the growth of
the game now and a say into the future for
our players and for the community usage as well.

Speaker 3 (01:36:44):
All sort of discussions that you have to have with
Eden Park and the powers that be there about about
the move away because obviously the Aces and the Hearts play,
you know, play your your games at the outer oval there.
What sort of conversations did you have with with Eaton Park.

Speaker 23 (01:36:59):
Yeah, so they are ongoing. Jason, so Eden Park is
New Zealand's premier sporting and then you're in the only
state in an Auckland capable of hosting international cricket. So yeah,
in terms of that, we've been clear with counsel and
local board that this is a domestic venue only. So yeah,
we're some discussions will be ongoing with Eton Park around

(01:37:20):
you know, the terms of our exit for the domestic side.

Speaker 3 (01:37:23):
Of the game, and so there was there's no plans.
The venues I mentioned before have all hosted international games.
Is there the desire at some point to have international
cricket at Colin Maiden Park?

Speaker 23 (01:37:35):
We've been Yeah, Like I said before, we've been very
clear with council and the local board that this is
a domestic venue only and international cricket will remain in
Eden Park.

Speaker 3 (01:37:46):
So what are the next steps and what sort of
time frame we're talking about here? When will we see
the Hearts and the and the Aces playing at Colin
Maiden I mean we know we know they played there already,
but what what are the next steps in terms of
the of the development of the venue.

Speaker 23 (01:38:00):
Yeah, so their approval on Thursday came with some clear
conditions for us to meet both thirty of September. So
we will be working hard to meet those and with
a view to playing at the facility in twenty six
twenty seven seasons and then with the move complete late
in twenty seven as well.

Speaker 3 (01:38:20):
I hope you've got yourself a corner office, have you
have you? Have you staked out where you're going to be.

Speaker 23 (01:38:24):
I haven't got into that level of detail. The first
stage and approval, so that'll be the next step.

Speaker 3 (01:38:32):
Surely, be the chief executive must give you some sort
of preference as far as where you want to be,
although knowing you, I think you'll probably rather be in
with the rest of your team.

Speaker 9 (01:38:39):
Hey.

Speaker 3 (01:38:39):
Ian, terrific news this week. Thanks for joining us, mate.
We look forward to seeing the progress and I'll have
to pay a visit to Colin Maiden Park once you're
up and running.

Speaker 23 (01:38:48):
Okay, thanks very much, Jason, appreciate you, Sup.

Speaker 26 (01:38:50):
Thank you.

Speaker 3 (01:38:50):
I appreciate your time. Ian, thanks for need. Ian Francis,
CEO of Auckland Crickets. So they're off to Colin Maiden Park.
A big investment there. Auckland Aces and Hearts matches will
be there, new training facilities, good broadcast infrastructure, refurbishment of
some existing buildings and that's where Auckland Cricket will be
based Colin Maiden Park.

Speaker 2 (01:39:10):
Good move.

Speaker 3 (01:39:10):
I think I'm not from Auckland. I don't know the
ins and outs of travel out to that part of
the city, but yeah, it just seems as though it's
a Yeah, it just makes sense, doesn't it. I quite
like the outer oval at eden Park that was quite good,
wasn't it for domestic stuff? That was you know, the

(01:39:33):
hitting sixers onto the road there and into the mobile forecourt. Yeah,
but look, I think you know that the current sporting
landscape lends itself to this sort of thing, you know,
a smaller venue, a more intimate venue for domestic cricket.
And as you heard Ian Francis say, look, this is
just a domestic proposition. There is no thought of playing

(01:39:57):
international cricket at Colin Maiden Park as they do in
the other places we mentioned. Now am I going to
be Hamilton Hagley Oval and Christ's? This is purely domestic.
How much international cricket gets played at Eden Park? And
the future remains to be seen. You know, there's I
think we've moved away from Eden Park as a test
forn you haven't we. There's you know, normally one or

(01:40:18):
two white ball matches there every summer, but on the
main oval. I mean, but you know it's a bit cavernous,
isn't it. So yeah, it'll be interesting to see just
how much international cricket is retained by Eden Park. I
would imagine it'd be yeah, Like I say, a couple
of white ball matches every summer. Whoever the big ticket
team that tours is will probably play a T twenty

(01:40:39):
match there, maybe a one day international remains to be seen,
but a good move I think from Auckland Cricket to
get out to Colin Maiden Park two twenty five, will
take a break and then head to New York where
sale GP has its latest stop. They haven't sailed since March.
It's been a week while the last regatta was caught off.
Of course they had to do a bunch of work

(01:40:59):
on all of the boats. They're ready to go again
and sailed on day one this morning on the Hudson
River the Black Foils the second and eleventh and then
a win in the third race to sit fourth on
the table. How do they evaluate their first day? Strategist
Live Mackay is with us next here on Weekend Sport.

Speaker 2 (01:41:19):
It's more than just a game. Weekend Sport with Jason
Pine and GJ.

Speaker 1 (01:41:24):
Gunnerhomes New Zealand's most trusted home builder news.

Speaker 3 (01:41:27):
Dogsb Newstalks a been Weekend Sport two twenty eight. Allen
says Jason, it's the increase in summer concerts at Eden Park,
which means the outer oval is becoming more and more unavailable.
That's why they've had to move to Colin Maiden. Thanks Ellen, Yeah,
I know you're right. Actually, whenever they have a concert
at Eden Park or any kind of event, often the
outer oval has taken out of commission as well, isn't

(01:41:48):
it so? Yep, very good point you make, Ellen. Thanks. Indeed,
the Black Foils well in the hunt following the opening
day of racing at the latest sal GP event in
New York. Are you now thinking terminated race and just
get ourselves as far as we can and get the
closest spot we can?

Speaker 18 (01:42:02):
Oh, we are.

Speaker 1 (01:42:02):
The Flatfoils are just brought it home the Avus wedding moment.

Speaker 3 (01:42:05):
That's odd for the Black Foils, so they managed to
save a day. They'll be loving that. I could assure you.
There's nothing that you can enjoy.

Speaker 16 (01:42:12):
Well, talk about sneaking up on you, sneaks up on
us as we had no idea, well I didn't at
least that New Zealand had one more turn to make.

Speaker 3 (01:42:20):
But they bring it home and they get the win. Yeah,
that's New Zealand winning the third and final Fleet race
on day one after they were second and eleventh in
the first two races. So the Black Falls are fourth
on the table, but just one point separating second from fourth,
and three more fleet races tomorrow before the top three
go into the final Black Foils. Strategist Live Mackay's with

(01:42:42):
us eleve in general terms. First of all, how do
you assess the opening day on the Hudson River.

Speaker 27 (01:42:48):
Yes, well, as you nicely worded there, it was definitely
a mixed bag today. I mean that eleventh place was
you know, really hindered us in the points, but very
glad to come away with the win and the last
one and the second in that first one. It was
a super challenging day out there. They were you know,

(01:43:09):
they brought the racing forward to you know, try and
get a hit of the storms that we ended up
having this afternoon. But it was it definitely made for
some really challenging racing and some insane fans that endured
some heavy rain out there.

Speaker 3 (01:43:27):
So okay, yeah, because that's I think most of us. Well,
I know, I did work up this morning thinking racing
was going to start at seven thirty out time, and
all of a sudden I look and it's all done,
so so a storm rolled in. That's why they brought
everything forward.

Speaker 27 (01:43:43):
Yes, obviously a very hard call to make because it
is not what you know, they want for fans and
everything is you know, bringing the schedule forwards not a
very usual thing in sport. But we've had, you know,
as a league, serious issues with thunderstorms in the past,
so they're just trying to mitigate that risk there, and

(01:44:06):
there was big threats of storms this afternoon in the area,
so they want to make sure everyone's safe and so
they ended up bringing it forward, which it all in
all worked out quite well with the wind because as
soon as that we finished racing, it actually fully died out,
so hopefully it made some good rewatching. But yes, I

(01:44:26):
think it's through a spinner in the works for everyone.

Speaker 3 (01:44:29):
Well, race three you finished on a high for the
first time in sol GP racing history. You lapped the
entire fleet. Can you talk us through Race three?

Speaker 27 (01:44:40):
Well, it's pretty far on for me in those conditions. Actually,
I ended up grinding, so they take the two big
guys off at the front and I end up quite
hid down, which is it's quite funny, but I didn't
really know to be honest, that we'd lapped everyone until
quite well after the race. I think in those conditions

(01:45:03):
we're always just looking for wind and focusing on on
where there's clear air and how we can keep foiling.
But yeah, it's pretty I'm about to rewatch the racing
now and pretty excited to look back on it.

Speaker 3 (01:45:17):
We need to we need to get your grinding more often.
Then it's clearly the secret, the secret to lapping the field.

Speaker 2 (01:45:24):
Yes, we'll see about that.

Speaker 27 (01:45:25):
It was dearly. I wouldn't say it was all luck
out there, but it was you know, you get on
days like today you need a bit of luck, and yeah,
obviously got a bit of it in that race.

Speaker 3 (01:45:35):
And what happened in race two? Was it just a
poor race all round? Was there an air near the start?
What happened in race two?

Speaker 27 (01:45:44):
Yeah, a mix. It's so we're racing in the Hudson here,
which is, you know, a river, and with that comes
huge tidal flows. So I'm not sure of what you
can and can't see on the broadcast, but we're basically,
you know, motoring with our chase boat is nearly as
fast as we can trying to go against the tie.

(01:46:06):
Then we get released and come into the start box,
but because it's the wind is so up and down
and it's really hard to forecast and kind of see
that kind of throws the whole start box is not
a lucky dip, but it's a lot more random, i'd
say than were used to. So we just got on

(01:46:28):
the back foot there a bit, and then that just
accumulated throughout the race. We did have a lot of
opportunities to come back, but yeah, unfortunately didn't capitalize on them.
So it's something we'll review tonight and yeah, hopefully build
on for tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (01:46:44):
And we've heard a lot over the last couple of
regattas or last two or three, think it was about
the new T foils, But were you back on the
L foils the previous foils for this one.

Speaker 27 (01:46:54):
Yes, yeah, so it's yeah, it's been a bit like
riding a bike for most of the fleet, to be honest.
We are waiting on the new lightier tfoils, which should
come online later in the season. But yes, the forecast

(01:47:16):
for this weekend was to be super light and very variable,
very unknown, so they decided to go with the OWL foils,
which basically just have a bigger surface area across them,
which helps to give more lift to the boat, so
a higher chance of foiling in lighter air. So they

(01:47:37):
really want to you know, get obviously the boat's up
and foiling for you know, some great racing, and that's
where they thought was you know, the best decision for
this weekend.

Speaker 3 (01:47:46):
And it's been a while since you've been racing, hasn't it,
you know, with an unscheduled break. I think the last
time you raced was in March. How much did you
enjoy actually being back out there competing.

Speaker 27 (01:47:59):
Yeah, I mean it's definitely been a while between drinks,
that's for sure, but it's I mean it almost feels
like no time has passed once we're back on the water.
I think we as a team, we really love New York,
so everyone was really excited to get back here, and
we've been doing a lot of work between events as

(01:48:21):
a team. We've done actually a lot of you know,
mental skills side stuff, which has been really interesting. So
it's it's been quite a big break, but it's also
given us opportunities to look into new areas and experience
different things as a team, which will hopefully make us
stronger in the long run.

Speaker 3 (01:48:42):
Always enjoy chatting with your live thanks for making yourself available.
All the best on day two. I appreciate you joining
us this afternoon. No, all good, thank you for having me, No,
thank you for joining us. Love love Mackay straightast on
the Black Foils and grind up by the sounds of
things this morning on Ards and River. So New Zealander fourth,
but just one point between fourth and second. Three more
fleet races and then the top three go into the finals.

(01:49:05):
So yeah, I think I said earlier in the show,
I expected this all to be happening at seven thirty
this morning, but as Live outline there, they had to
bring it forward because of the impending storm. Hopefully they
won't be the case tomorrow. Three more fleet races from
seven thirty tomorrow morning, New Zealand time, and then the
top three go into the into the final. Look forward

(01:49:25):
to that twenty four to three. Let's take a break
when we come back, Ash, you'll be an early start
tomorrow to watch that if you want to, or and
or to watch Ryan Fox in action because he has
a share of the fifty four whole lead at the
Canadian Open in Ontario. He'll tee off tomorrow in the final,
pairing alongside Italian Mateo Manaicero. At five forty five, He's

(01:49:50):
had three terrific rounds in Ontario. Can he make it
a fourth and can he win a second PGA Tour
title in the space of a month. These are all
very good questions. I'll pose a couple of them to
Phil tato Angi when we come back here on New
Talks HEADB the.

Speaker 1 (01:50:07):
Tough Questions off the turf Weekends for It with Jason
Kine and GJ. Gunnerholmes, New Zealand's most trusted home builder,

Speaker 2 (01:50:16):
Playing fix over in the Faraway at nine don't want
to miss left.

Speaker 3 (01:50:22):
Oh it's tremendous.

Speaker 2 (01:50:25):
Wow, what a grand front.

Speaker 3 (01:50:26):
Name A really good front nine for Ryan Fox has
him in sight of his second PGA two of victory,
just weeks after winning his first. Of course, last month,
he won the Myrtle Beach Classic title in a playoff,
and after back to back four under sixty six's in
the first two rounds, he today shot are six under
sixty four in the third round to take a share

(01:50:48):
of the fifty four hole lead. At the Canadian Open
in Ontario, he is fourteen under and will start his
final round alongside joint leader Italian Mateo Manicero at around
quarter to six tomorrow morning, New Zealand Time. Phil tartod
Angi is another member of the very select group of
kiwis to of one on the PGA two. He joins us, Now,
can we make that correlation, Phil? Can we correlate Ryan's

(01:51:11):
good form since winning at Myrtle Beach with getting that
monkey offers back?

Speaker 19 (01:51:17):
I think that had something to do with a pony.
When you've got a goal that's been a lifelong goal
and you managed to tick that box off, there's there
is that resetting of the goals. And I think we
talked about that a little bit immediately after all right
when he was about to win the Middle Beach was

(01:51:38):
potentially having to reset the you know, the targets for
this season. But I think the for Ryan, what has
suddenly been consistent throughout his career is that when he
finds for when he finds a little bit of confidence,
when he finds a little something with his putter, he

(01:51:59):
tends to ride that wave for a number of weeks.
And so we've seen that throughout the years, and I
think that's at a batch that he's in right now.

Speaker 3 (01:52:08):
Can you notice a difference if you watch him. Can
you notice a difference on the way that he's walk
around the golf course approaching his parts, his other shots?
Can you physically notice a difference.

Speaker 19 (01:52:21):
I only just fractionally. I don't know Ryan well enough.
When I say I don't know him well enough. I'm
not there with him every day, and I don't know
him as well as his coaches. But what he does
exceptionally well is for the most part, keep himself pretty
even keeled, doesn't get too high, doesn't get too low.

(01:52:44):
And that's the sort of mindset that keeps you, you know,
a on top of your game even when you're when
you've got a few troubles, when you've got a few issues.
But it also means that you can ride that wave.
You don't actually exhaust yourself with too much energy. And
I think for Ryan, he's got a better job thus

(01:53:07):
far of managing his schedule this year. He hasn't tried
to overplay. And maybe we saw that this week. He
had the opportunity of not being in the US Opening,
going through the City six hole qualifier after a long
week last week at the Memorial, and he says, you
know what, I'm just going to back myself to finish
inside the top three, which would be the last three

(01:53:28):
spots to get into their US Open in similar sort
of fashion to the way he got in the PGA.
And that's maturity, that's a knowing, that's a little confidence,
that's a little bit of a of winning earlier in
the season, of playing nicely that you can just back
your form and look, if he doesn't get it done tomorrow,
finishes inside the top three, he goes into the season

(01:53:51):
third major, continuing that wave of fawn that he's had
over the last couple of months.

Speaker 3 (01:53:56):
Yeah, well, it's in pretty good shape. He had a
really good front nine, five birdies on his front nine
to be five under at the turn. Would he have
been in any way disappointed not to pick up more
than one shot on a back nine?

Speaker 19 (01:54:06):
Do you think I only saw a couple of couple
of shots of his earlier today And listening to the
CBS crew they talk about his game, they you know,
it was a very cruisy. It was a third year
sixty four, let's put it that way. Felt like that
he left a few out there, and so a couple
of short parts missed, birdie parts missed. But that's the

(01:54:31):
sort of stuff that I was trying to describe there.
Your previous question is that he tends to put that
stuff behind him.

Speaker 7 (01:54:37):
Well, he doesn't labor on it.

Speaker 23 (01:54:40):
And although that could have.

Speaker 19 (01:54:41):
Been sixty twos, you know, sixty one might have opened
up a few shots lead. He knows his games in
good shape when it's there or thereabouts, he still makes
a lot of mistakes because that's his sort of game.
He likes to attack, he likes to play very aggressively,
and that's his that's his strength, certainly with the big sick.

(01:55:03):
And so the part and parcel of that is that, yeah,
put it in the gunnery every now and then, make
a couple of bogies, like miss the carp shots, but
it's because I'm trying to make them up. And that's
what wins your GOT tournaments. At the end of the day.
You tend not to these this day and age, with
as deep as the fields are, as talented as the
competition is, you can't back yourself until win. You've got

(01:55:26):
to go and make make it. You've got to go
and play the shots when it counts coming down the stretch.
And now and then trying to pull a couple of
those off, you might stub your toe. And it's just
part and past of trying to win golf tournaments. And
Ryan does a really good job of keeping the pedal
to the meddle and Halden meddles as if he goes
out and shoots another low round tomorrow, if it's good enough,

(01:55:47):
it's good enough. If not, he he'll continue to play himself.
And there's some really good nick heading into the US Open.

Speaker 3 (01:55:54):
Yeah, he'll have to chase Berdies tomorrow when he phil
because I mean a lot of players are shooting sub sixty,
you know. The I think the top eight or nine
golfers might have been more have all been under sixty
in all three rounds. Even par won't be good enough tomorrow,
will it.

Speaker 19 (01:56:10):
I wouldn't think so. Conditions look like they're very scorable,
and the golf courses.

Speaker 14 (01:56:19):
It's fair and middling.

Speaker 19 (01:56:19):
It's not of you that they've gone to often. So
the Canadian Open it's not quite as treacherous they ten
with the Canadian Open having the state the last few years,
they've tried to set it up like a US Open,
so you maybe ten underwins, try and keep the scores down.
But this one looks like it's giving up a little

(01:56:40):
bit more scoring than in year's past. And so the
mindset past seventy two though pinting, So you're seeing guys
shoot in the sixties and not quite ending up to
quite as deep underpar. But I think the mindset tomorrow
is that it maybe first to eighteen, maybe nineteen. It
might require something like that because the him and Manaceero

(01:57:05):
at the top is a handful of others within a
couple of shots as well. And so someone's going to
go out and shoot sixty five tomorrow, you can guarantee it.
If he shoots somewhere around that number, he may.

Speaker 9 (01:57:15):
Well be lost in his second.

Speaker 3 (01:57:17):
Trophy of AVJ Joe, I can't wait. It's going to
be an early start for us all five forty five
tomorrow morning when he teas off watching him negotiate his
final round. Thanks for joining us, fell drive safe, mate,
We'll catch up again soon.

Speaker 8 (01:57:29):
Thanks finy.

Speaker 19 (01:57:30):
Hey, look, he's a good front runner. And so for
Ryan Fox fans, I wouldn't miss tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (01:57:34):
I won't be missing tomorrow, mate, Don't you worry about that,
as I know you won't be thanks Phil phild Ony,
former PGA Tour winner, former top pro and real astute
analyst of the game of golf. Good Davin joining us
here on news talks here b so five forty five.
Tomorrow morning, Ryan Fox will tee off with Mateo Manacto.
He is fourteen under the card. That is a one
shot lead from a group of three other golfers tied

(01:57:57):
for third. Lee Hodges, Kevin You and Matt McCarty. Yeah,
it's been three really good rounds here yees so often
here Ryan Fox say, look, I know I've got four
good rounds in me and I can put together four
good rounds. This is what I feel, say scorable, this
course is very scorable. Sixty six, sixty six, sixty four.

(01:58:21):
Like I say, if you go all the way down
to the golfers who are tied for ninth, almost without exception,
they have gone under seventy in three straight rounds. There's
been a couple of sixty two's, a sixty three, a
sixty one. Christobal del Sola shot us sixty one on

(01:58:44):
the first day, but then a seventy one on the second,
so it kind of almost undid all of us good work.
But this is scorable, very scorable. And so there's a
few more birdies coming in the way of Ryan Fox,
and who knows, who knows, maybe we are celebrating a
second PGA Tour victory and just under a month for
Ryan Fox. Exciting times. He's going to finish with some tennis.

(01:59:07):
Coco Goff one who made in French Open women's singles title,
battling from a set down to beat Arena Sabalink at
the top seed and the final in Paris Golf won
six seven six two six two sorry six two six
four and two and a half hours to her second
Korea Grand Slam. She is the first American woman to
capture the singles title at Roland Garross since Serena Williams

(01:59:29):
did it in twenty fifteen. And conditions weren't that great
for Cocoa Golf.

Speaker 24 (01:59:33):
Yeah, it was not a day for a great tennis. Honestly,
I don't know too many people that could play great
tennis today, But you know, it's part of the sport
and part of playing outside. You just don't know what
Dick's back, especially in Paris.

Speaker 3 (01:59:46):
Cocoa Goff said afterwards, though she really wanted this title.

Speaker 24 (01:59:49):
Obviously, I think the first one was maybe more emotional,
but I think this one was just harder because you know,
you win wine and you just don't want to get
satisfied with just that one. So it was very difficult
to match up. And I also felt like this one
was one I really wanted because I do think this
was one of the tournaments that when I was younger,
that I felt that I had the best shot of winning.
So I just felt like if I went through my

(02:00:09):
career and didn't get at least one of these, I
would fill regrets and stuff. So today playing Irena was
just like, I just got to go for it and
try my best to get through the match, and yeah,
that's what I did.

Speaker 3 (02:00:20):
And Cauco Goff believes it came down to shar will
power in what were very tough conditions.

Speaker 24 (02:00:24):
Yeah, it was super tough, and I walked on the
court and felt the win because we warmed up with
the roof closed. I was like, this is gonna be
a tough, tough day, and I knew it was just
gonna be about willpower and mental and yeah, it really
came down to the last few points. But overall, I'm
just really happy with the fight that I managed today.
Wasn't pretty, but it got the job done and that's
all that matters.

Speaker 3 (02:00:44):
So that's your friend.

Speaker 9 (02:00:45):
Chip.

Speaker 3 (02:00:45):
In Women's Singles Champion for twenty twenty five American Coco Golf,
the Means final is tonight, mouth watering top two seeds
Janick Cinna against Colos Elkarez. Klos Elkrez is the defending champion,
Janick Cinna is Janick Cinna. Basically, this is an intriguing
matchup to find the me When's singles winner at the

(02:01:08):
French Open for twenty twenty five, nine away from three,
New Stalks.

Speaker 1 (02:01:11):
EB breaking down the Hail Mary's and the epic fails

Six away from three, and that brings to an end
another weekend sports show and another weekend sport weekend. We're
