now again in control of their top four destiny. When
there remaining three games Titans away, Eels home, Sea Eagles away,
(01:25):
and they will finish in the top four. Plenty of water,

Weekend Sport with Jason Payne News Talks MB.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
The Warriors back into the NRL's top four after victory
over the Dragons at Mount Smart last night.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
The Warriors jured closer boy, those are coming that got
onto Harris Taveta shop all for New York Courting cunning
meters away from the line of the Warriors.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Here's the life they hit the shots of.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
It chart up Yes, tire to Tara pop.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Past Yeah, the second of Adam Pompey's two second half tries,
helping the Warriors come back from ten nil down after
twenty three minutes to win fourteen ten and snap a
three game losing streak. Assistant coach of the Warriors, Rich
Agar is whether Rich congratulations on the win. How was
the range of emotions in the coaching books throughout the
(05:07):
eighty minutes last night?
Speaker 5 (05:10):
Yeah, there were some frustrations at times. I think I
think some of our frustrations obviously were self inflicted. You know,
I thought our effort were really, really good all night again,
but you know, our game was certainly punctuated with some yeah,
pretty fundamentally easy errors, and we spent big time, you know,
(05:31):
both in the first half and the second half. At
sometimes the possession swings were sort of sixty forty and
seventy thirty, which you know, he has a fair adverse
effect on your energy levels, and you know, we just
robbed ourselves with a lot of opportunities to play down
their end. But I thought, I thought we did show
good energy and I thought we showed a good energy
(05:53):
to move the ball at times and we got out
of his own end pretty well. We just you know,
we were sort of playing on scraps in good ball.
But I thought we came off the ropes after those
sort of possession swings and yeah, some some six agains
and some penalties in there. I thought we came off
the ropes, you know, pretty well in what we're tight
and very tough game. The sort of ball in play
(06:17):
scores that have come back today and the intensity scores
were probably the second highest we've had all season. So yeah,
it would it would have. It would have pretty tough
and taxing game.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
I want to talk about some of the things you've
mentioned there in terms of the self infliction etcyrenderm moment.
But after three strike losses, Rich, how important is just
getting a win rather than the manner in which you achieved.
Speaker 5 (06:40):
Yeah, good, good question. Well, well, first of all, it's
very important, and you know, we would have way last
week I watched I watched the Dragons play and played
very very well again Crnalla and the commentary on the
TV and that was saying about the Dragons record again again.
Top eight teams and I sort of thought the question
(07:01):
at the moment is what's the top eight team? Because
there's teams that are in and out of the eight,
but there's teams like the Dragons playing exceptionally well. You know,
there's teams when you're going down to almost eleventh and
twelve position that you like, everybody's just capable of being
anybody at the moment, and you know, we came up
again aside in good form, and I think on the
back of three defeats, you know, one of them very
(07:22):
close one. It was just important for us to get
the win for sure, and obviously an opportunity because of
the previous night's results to put ourselves in the top four.
So you know, it's in our hands. It's been a
long season and we've had a lot of a lot
of things to contend with along the way, but you
(07:43):
know we're in there. We're still fighting, and you know,
I know we're a team that we.
Speaker 6 (07:47):
Will fight to the death.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
There are a couple of instances late in the game
where the Dragons made line breaks, desperate scrambling by Warriors defenders.
How proud were you of your players and moments like
that and managing to hold them out, especially given the
fact that you know, a week ago against you know,
or against the Dolphins previously, you know that that scored
late prayer. Were you of your team last night in
those in those closing minutes, Yeah, I.
Speaker 5 (08:10):
Mean, I've got to say, the play that they put
on from their own end, what a good play, you know,
a really well executed, tough play to defend. But yeah,
we had a lot of white shirts back ready to
scramble his online and thought, I thought we got that
through the evening. You know, we conceded a couple of
tries on our right again, and that's an area that
undoubtedly we've We've just got to keep working harder. You know.
(08:33):
I know a lot of I guess criticism has come
down's way, but I don't think that quite tells the
full story, do you know what I mean. I think
it's very much a collective and we've still got to
come up with some better answers than what we did
last night. But I thought generally our scramble, I think
people will point to the hia's but I think the
(08:55):
possession scores, and certainly at second half when it were
creeping up to seventy thirty, that takes enormous amount of
impact on your energy levels, and with a ball in
play and the intensity game being as high as it is,
I think those last moments to get so many people
back scrambling like they did, you know, it shows a
real good spirit and desire from our guys.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
Indeed, so when you when you do a tech the
week you hit and you you look back at your
review of this as you've seid on this chair. And
Andrew Wibster said last night, you know you're making it
hard for yourselves on occasions. What are the work ons rich,
What will you focus your attention on a hit of
the Titans next week?
Speaker 6 (09:35):
Althok?
Speaker 5 (09:35):
I think I think we've got to double down on
what we're doing well as much as what we've got
to improve. I thought we showed a good propensity to
you know, take ques and play some short sides, play
some off flow, move the ball from our own end.
I thought we gained a lot of energy from that,
and we weren't afraid to you know, we certainly didn't
(09:56):
play in in a pragmatic style. I think importantly we've
we've still got to keep improving our strike, but we
want to get more opportunities down there and back by
staying down there and and some of those areas, unfortunately
we're just fundamental errors people dropping the ball and dropping
the ball in contact. The one thing I will say,
we're out on the field for warm up, and there
(10:17):
were in an absence of any win last night.
Speaker 7 (10:19):
So what we found was that the balls actually were
incredibly greasy and soapy last night. It were a difficult,
real difficult night for that. But without a doubt those.
Speaker 5 (10:32):
Areas which we just got a wide amount of game.
And I think sometimes if you look last night, some
of those instances are purely and simple, an individual thing.
You know, we'll work out on our skill and make
sure that we're dealing in the ball as well as
we can, but sometimes it's just it's just a little
concentration or someone that's not got the right grids in contact.
(10:56):
But it certainly hurts last night. You know, we conceded
a lot of position and positioning. You know that we
don't you know, we don't, We don't. They're right at
that point to to have a crack at the tie line.
And yeah, with a couple of guys that probably probaly
had one or two hours more than they would have
liked last night.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
Are you expecting any any plays back next week? Presumably Cook, Kyple,
Tomlly Martin. If the concussion, I should be okay, roc
I Berry you say your.
Speaker 5 (11:22):
Chance, Yeah, I think so. It's still early doors. But
I think the three guys there that you mentioned, yeah,
they'llll be They'll all be contention. I think Rocco will
certainly after pass on physical tests and kick some boxes
during the week as well. The guys that I had
(11:42):
the headnocks. But to be fair to my to Mary
felt all right last Saturday. You know literally you got
in the changing rooms after the game you were like,
now fine, and he will find that in you know,
within seconds of it happening. But you know, the protocols
are there for a reason for his own protection. But
you know, both those guys that you know will be
backing for training and good to go for selection next week,
(12:04):
and fingers crossed, we can you know, we can get
Rocco to the start line as well.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
Good stuff. And just to finish, just back to the
point you made before about what actually is a top
eight side, because you look at the games that have
been you know, played this weekend the line I mean,
I'm not sure if you saw the Rooster's Bulldogs game
last night, Rich, but the Roosters did a job on
the Bulldogs. It's really really hard from game to game
to pick what's going to happen, isn't it.
Speaker 7 (12:27):
Well, that's my point.
Speaker 5 (12:28):
And there's probably not many sporting competitions in the world
so much parroting as what these in the NRL. So
if you're in our positions as coach sport, it's you know,
it makes for you know, an amazing contest. And the
finals have almost been gone, I guess in terms of
(12:51):
the race for the for the top four, and you know,
I think people for a while saying the top four
are done, it's got four as far from done. And
if you look at the fixtures over the last storry
over the next three week there could be some real
twists and turns to God in this competition. Yet not
only for top five but top eight as well. So
as we say for the competition, it's wonderful for our
(13:15):
stress levels, yeah, it's not as wonderful.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
Well, I hope you can relax at least for the
rest of the weekends before you start planning the week ahead. Rich,
Thanks for your time. Has always made and well done
on the result last night.
Speaker 5 (13:27):
Oh, I appreciate it, Jason, thank you mate, No.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
Thank you, rich Rich, I go. They're assistant coach of
the Warriors. Look fairly pragmatic, wasn't it. We're not perfect,
we were nowhere close to it, but you get the win. Oh,
eight hundred and eighty ten to eighty Warriors fans, let's
hear from you. Don't underestimate how much of a monkey
off the back this is. When things aren't going your way.
In any sport, sometimes you just need to win in
(13:54):
any fashion that you can win ugly is a tried
in true cliche in sport. Sometimes you just have to win.
It doesn't really matter how. You wake up this morning
and you look at the table and the Warriors have
the two points from last night and are sitting in fourth.
(14:14):
It's the same in a lot of sports. Yeah, sometimes
just needs something to go your way. Football strikers often
say if they're in a bit of a goal scoring
drought that they just need one to go on off
their backside from a yard out and they're away. Same
with cricketers you know, who are in a bit of
a trot. But i'll tell you if they can get
to thirty odd with nothing coming off the middle of
the bat you know, each just down through the slips
(14:35):
or whatever. That's fine, you play your way back into form.
There were concerns, weren't there during this three game losing streak,
that the Warriors might even drop out of the eight. Well,
that ain't happening now, and you look at these next
three games, the final three regular season games Titans away,
(14:56):
Eels at home, See Eagles away, all sides outside the
top eight. Currently all three likely to miss the eight.
The Titans definitely will, the Eels almost certainly will. The
Sea Eagles have got a chance, but I got them
missing the aid as well. So all winnable for the Warriors,
but all tricky as well for their own reasons. The
(15:17):
Titans have become the Warriors bogie team for some unexplainable reason.
In the last three games, that Eels have beaten the
Broncos and the Cowboys and will level with the Storm
until late in that game before losing sixteen ten. And
the Sea Eagles on the last day of their season
will be farewelling daily Cherry Evans, one of their great
(15:38):
great players, so there'll be plenty of emotion wrapped around
that as well, So all winnable, but all tricky and
at seventy to thirty stat though rich Agar referred to
a couple of times he was talking about the fact
that last night the Dragons for large periods had seventy
percent of the ball. That's far too much to be
(16:02):
that's far too much possession to be giving away and
playing without the All those stats have come back, as
rich said this morning, got a you gotta even that up.
You can't be giving any opposition seventy percent of the ball.
Lot's to work on, but a much needed win. A eight,
one hundred and eighty ten arts our number. Let's kick
(16:23):
this around, Candy.
Speaker 8 (16:24):
Lyle, you did I mate, Look they're going to win,
and good luck to them. They've done it. The middly
the other side had seventy percent of the ball, but
they're out of the side. It's also down two three
key balls, so we're out wishing to be a party
of people. I'd say they hadn't had that much. Bad
(16:46):
lucks of George who probably didn't you look at a
different result. Hope's certainly not a center that right side
for major concern. I'm not going to knock them too much.
I had twenty dollars down for them to win between
one and six points, so I collected one hundred and twenty.
Next week hopefully I ad Bronco Berry back into Mari mart.
(17:10):
It is a home game next week, don't worry it.
Maybe Southeast point three, but the Brothers will come from
far and wide, particularly out of Logan, Upper Kumra and
Simple Mars, so they won't back the support. But once
the finals begin, they're going to have to increase remarkably
if they want to be considerably. But if they can
win one semi and go out of that, I still
(17:31):
think the season has been a success. With the number
of injuries they've had, you can't help them. It's just
it's a brutal game. It's last night's contest proved.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
Yeah, the support over there is always going to be
there while you're right. And the other salient point you
make is that they have to improve. You know, they
can't play like they did last night and expect to
do anything in the finals. At least they're finishing the
top four, they get that second chance. But I don't
think we should be relying on that. What you want
to see is an upward trajectory now over these next
three games for the for Warriors fans, I think to
(18:06):
feel comfortable going into the finals, there has to be
an upswing in a bunch of areas over these next
three games.
Speaker 8 (18:13):
Oh definitely, because when the semi start, it's almost like
the season starts again and the intensity goes up another
couple of notches. And unfortunately, I think the Warriors maybe
playing it full till now. You know, it's one thing
I did impressed me last weight with the seventy per
cent of the ball, and they didn't leak any more
(18:34):
points after the first start. So yeah, the mental capacity
or the mental fortitude of that side is probably far
superior than what team Warrior teams the past. You know. Then, look,
I think twenty twenty seven probably be the year. Hopefully
they proved me wrong, But anyway, onward and up.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
Good man, lol, enjoy spending your winnings. Someone said, sorry
to be corrected, but if we don't win another game,
we can drop out of the eight. Yes, so I
didn't when I said happen, I didn't mean mathematically it can't.
I can't see it happening. You're right, the Warriors are
on thirty two points, the team currently in ninth. The
Dolphins have twenty six so they could get Yeah, I
(19:18):
mean they could get past us that you know, Sharks
have played twenty one games, so they can and they're
on twenty eight points. You're right, mathematically, the Warriors could
fall out of the top eight and the points been
made here are points differential is worse than anybody else's
in the top eight. Conversation. I just don't see it.
I just don't see especially looking at the results that
(19:39):
are happening at the moment. You know, teams are beating teams,
so you think, you know, how's that happened? Was the
Roosters last night? My god, they hammered the Bulldogs. They
were so good. I thought, you know, where's this team being?
Mike says, good win pinety doesn't matter how three wins
(19:59):
and they're in two wins and they have a chance
because Penrith play Canberra Bulldogs and Dragons. Good on your mic.
Appreciate it, Jamie high mate?
Speaker 6 (20:09):
Can they?
Speaker 9 (20:09):
Jason?
Speaker 4 (20:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 10 (20:11):
Just funny? How is Richie? Ago was talking about the
stress levels on the coaching box. You went about the
stress levels for some of the.
Speaker 3 (20:19):
How were yours mate.
Speaker 10 (20:21):
Oh, just at the end, I thought it was I
thought it's going to be like the same as the
Dolphins game, same.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
Same, Jamie. When they when those line breaks happened, I
felt exactly, I thought, mate, they're going in here, They're
going in here.
Speaker 10 (20:34):
Yeah, yeah, yep, And there's like obviously not for the
first time this season, but but yeah, just I guess,
just a relief that they've got the win. Yeah, yeah,
they were just sort of giving them a bit of
a rat but yeah, obviously they've got a lot of
well to do to to be you know, to have
a chance in the finals. I say, but but you know,
(20:55):
it's just at least it gets the confidence moves back
up again.
Speaker 3 (20:59):
And when it went like that, yeah, just to win
a Jamie. You know, I think when you when you
got and it wasn't like it was a long losing streak.
Three games is not, you know, it's not lost ten
in a row. But you must start to wonder where
the next one is coming from, and you just take
whatever you can get you honestly, you know, just take
whatever you can get in like I say, they wake
up this morning. Yeah, it was stressful for the coaches,
(21:19):
for us, but there's two points and we're in fourth.
Speaker 10 (21:23):
Mm hmmm.
Speaker 11 (21:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (21:24):
And this weeking just Roger threw us a chick. What
a what a what a play? What a freaky is man?
I mean it just this is I think it was
a game high kerries and just just the things he does,
the tackles he makes, and seeing that the first try
was just well, just what a player he is.
Speaker 3 (21:42):
So glad he came back. So glad he came back. Yeah,
he's he and especially Jamie with you guys out experienced
guys not there, you know, Mitch Barnett, Luke Metcalfe for
periods of time, James Fisher, Harris not there, you know
last night, no Kurk Cake well through concussion. You know
Roger's been, He's been terrific.
Speaker 10 (22:02):
Gay exactly. Yeah, in Delln's bed, still looking in your try.
But you know he's his carriers are coming up as well.
So that's a good sign as well.
Speaker 3 (22:13):
Much more relaxing Saturday for us, Jamie. We can just
chill out of it now, mate, exactly tomorrow morning exactly
until we all flax good on. M'd always enjoyed chatting
to you, Jamie. Have an excellent Afternoon Mate twelve twenty
nine O eight one hundred and eighty ten eighty Paul
hold their mate with you right after this spear line
if you want to jump aboard and talk to warriors
with us Beck in the moment.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
One Crutch hold Engage Weekend Sports with Jason Hym and GJ.
Gunner Homes New Zealand's most trusted home builder News Talks
their b.
Speaker 3 (22:41):
Twelve thirty two on News Talks there B. Where was
Kirk cap Paul last night? Asks Terrence on text here
our concussion? He was concussed last week, had to sit
through concussion protocols. By the sounds of it, he'll be
absolutely fine for next week. Geta Paul, how are you?
Speaker 8 (22:54):
Mate?
Speaker 6 (22:57):
Goody by.
Speaker 5 (23:00):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (23:00):
I went to win, but be honest, made I thought
it was pretty poor performance and what's good to think
the teams don't get the end of the game, you
know with all the other faithful but Jed's a lot
to work on. I know, I know Ed Richie Ago
just on.
Speaker 12 (23:14):
I think he's the tech coach, but after twenty five
odd rounds, you know our tech really it was pretty
pretty poor last night and same old things were happening.
You know, drop ball penalty's given away, some dumb decisions.
Speaker 9 (23:30):
So I mean, if if he could pare the way
we're playing to the lots of you know, the storm
and those guys. Yeah, it's talking cheese, mate, And I
know we've got some trips to come back. You know,
we've got the tape for to come back, which means
probably let our Semour will go to the bench, which
I think it's it's where he plays his best coming
off the bench, and rock a Berry will be a
(23:53):
welcome addition into the into the centers, you know, because
of his kit chase and he's he's a true center.
So thereout some positives you know, looking forward. But last
night we came away from the game thinking, gee, you
know we've the win, but yeah, I just can't help
but say, if we if we carry on antradictory, mate,
we'll be at the out of the finals in week one.
Speaker 3 (24:15):
Do you think though, that it was just a matter
last night of just getting it done, Paul. You know,
I'd absolutely take on board what you're saying, mate, And
you're such a you know, you've got such a keen
analytical eye on on rugby league. You're right, and and
you know what, even people without that could say last night,
that wasn't a great performance. But do you think it
was just a matter of getting it done and the
(24:35):
stuff you've talked about can hopefully upswing in its trajectory
over the next three weeks as we head towards finals.
Speaker 9 (24:43):
Yeah, it was an element of that. I know that
was an indigenous realm. It was quite emotional in the
stadium with you know, the ceremony at the start, and
you know, I was there and I saw the dragons
come in to the stadium and then I just you
could just tell that they were that they were up
for last night, that they were they really wanted that game.
(25:03):
You know, their coach would just resigned get the villains
one hundred, two hundred and fiftieth games. And but the
Warrior is just you know, in front of your home fans,
you've lost three on the trot, you just think that
it's once again we're not coming out of the blocks
really really fast and hard. Our line speed's pretty pretty average,
you know. I mean, don't get me wrong, you know,
(25:25):
I love my Warriors and I want them but to
do well. But you know, as you know, mate, but yeah,
it was.
Speaker 10 (25:30):
It was a hard, hard watch.
Speaker 9 (25:31):
And like I said, if we don't improve, you know,
we will be it'll be ment Monday pretty soon.
Speaker 3 (25:39):
What does you got tell you? What does you got
tell you about the next three games? What does you
got to tell you about their ability to improve?
Speaker 9 (25:47):
Well, I wouldn't say that there they're games that we
we should win, but they are gettable games, you know,
the tythons that eels and manly. But this competition is
so so tough this year, you know you. I mean,
the Dragons tipped up the Raiders a couple of weeks ago,
and it's just such a tough competition. So m ma,
got feelings is that we you know, we'll we'll we'll
(26:09):
probably win one out of the next three hopefully too
and and and you know we'll definitely make the eights.
But yeah, I'm just just a bit worried. I mean,
I think, thank goodness that we do here some troops
coming back, and there has been one hell of a year,
you know for injury. I saw Blue Metcalf last night
hobbling around, and you know, Jubi miss him, and Mitch
(26:32):
Barnett obviously he's out.
Speaker 10 (26:33):
So but.
Speaker 9 (26:37):
Yeah, it's it's it's gonna be tough, mate, but you
know that's why we love our wars.
Speaker 6 (26:41):
Mate.
Speaker 9 (26:41):
You know it's a roller coaster, mate. We go up
and we go down and undeceived for the ride.
Speaker 3 (26:47):
And I know you're the type of bloke who never
jumps off, Paul, You never ever jump off, Matey, good
on you man. I'm glad you got the chance to
sing the song last night. And yeah, here's to a
here's here's to an upswing and performance over the next
three weeks. Great, there's always good boys. See you're saying
eight hundred and eighty ten eighty, you're absolutely dreaming business texts.
(27:10):
They're so inconsistent. They are no chance. It depends on
what you're saying. What they've got a chance of? Okay,
let's break this down. Will they make the eight? I
think almost certainly now they will. There would have to
be a combination of results, which is not the most
likely scenario for them to fall out of the eight.
They'd have to lose their last three games. Look, that
(27:32):
could happen, they lost the last three, but I don't
see it happening. And even if they did lose the
last three games, a bunch of teams below them would
have to win their last three. It just doesn't seem
the most likely scenario. So the Warriors will almost certainly
be in the top eight when you consider that last
year they were what thirteenth. I've said often on the
(27:53):
show that most Warriors fans, if you said to them,
you'll make the top eight in twenty twenty five, would
have taken that in a heartbeat. They would have said, yep,
I'll take that. Then we start talking about the top four,
and the reason the top four is even in the
conversation is because that's where the Warriors have lived for
(28:13):
a large part of the season, off the back of
a once we got home from Vegas, a really good start,
and some solid performances. Through the middle of the season,
they lived largely in the top four, and so that
gives fans and observers belief that this is what this
team is, a top four proposition. And so naturally, when
(28:39):
the last three weeks happened and we started to teeter
a little bit and then fell out of the top four,
there's natural disappointment. We forget the fact that we would
have been delighted with top eight, and we're now That
emotion is replaced by being disappointed that we're not in
the top four anymore. And then you get to last night.
(29:01):
And as I've said, at the risk of repeating myself,
which I know I do a lot, they look at
the table and the Warriors are fourth. They're a point
ahead of Penrith. If they win their last three games
the Warriors, they will finish in the top four. That
is mathematical fact. The Panthers have to play the Raiders
(29:21):
next week, then the Bulldogs and then the Dragons to finish.
So Raiders and Bulldogs the teams that are currently first
and third. The Panthers are playing well and up until
the other night, where depending on which way you look
at it, they were a little bit stiff to lose
to the Storm and Golden Point, but they won nine
in a row, the Panthers of old. But they might
(29:46):
not beat the Raiders, they might not beat the Bulldogs.
The Warriors have three WINNA ball games. Just got to
get the job done. Just got to get the job done.
Carlos is pining. No team who has ended up with
thirty two points at the end of a season has
missed the top eight. For me, the Warriors finished fourth
(30:07):
after last night's result. They didn't deserve to win it,
but they did. Rather than games they should have won
in the past but didn't go the Warriors. It cart
us another really interesting point that you know last year
they lost game. How many games do they lose last
year by single digit margins? They go, Man, if only
if only they done that? Yes, we have to look
(30:27):
deeper than the scoreboard. We do, and Paul is always
a very good compass on that. I enjoy his calls
immensely because he always adds plenty in terms of a
great balance between being a fan but also being a
critical eye on the game. And of course the Warriors
play like that in a finals game, they won't win
(30:49):
the finals game. I think it's as simple as that.
Piney top four. Very likely Panthers have a very tough
run home, says James. With the Broncos run home and injuries,
they may miss the eight. The Warriors were lucky to
win last night. I said last week they peaked at
(31:09):
the wrong end of the season. Still hold that view. See,
I'm not sure that you can only peak once during
a season either. I'm not sure that that's true either.
A season of this length has peaks and troughs plural.
If they win their last three games, that will mean
they've won their last four going into finals. And if
you believe in momentum, if you believe that momentum is
(31:30):
a thing, then they would have it.
Speaker 6 (31:35):
Jose.
Speaker 3 (31:35):
She keeps saying that the Rugby Championship starts at nine
o'clock tomorrow morning. It's actually ten past three with a
box against Australia. Sorry, I should have I did know that.
I did know that, and so says Jason. Are you
going to mention the Stags the amazing comeback by the
Stags last night? Southland's gritty performance twenty two nil down
(31:55):
at halftime and then twenty nine unanswered points in their
second half. Stag supporters turning out in freezing temperatures deserve
the win as well as the guys makeing up the
Stag's team. A great result, got on your sue, I
did see that, actually, I thought that was remarkable, remarkable Piney.
(32:16):
I reckon, we'll scrape into fourth then be written off
by the Australian press, says Jamie. Then will surprise the
Raiders in the first semi and we'll see a rookie
Stewart explosion at the best conference. We may well do
just before we go to a break. Tomorrow is Auckland
Rugby League's Fox Premiere Final. I'm told at Trust Arena
(32:36):
two thirty. The women's final actually is at twelve fifteen.
That's Mount Albert against Pappacutta and the men's final Mount
Albert against Otahohu. Go the Mighty Lions says this text. Thanks, indeed,
we'll take a break, come back and with the arrival
this weekend of the Heartland Championship Rugby competition, want to
(32:58):
get you a Thames Valley they won the Meads Cup
last year. They opened this afternoon with a repeat of
that final last year against Mid Canterbury. The game is
being played in Why he going to chat to the
CEO of Thames Valley Rugby right after this?
Speaker 1 (33:15):
You be the TMO. Have your say on eight hundred
and eighty ten eighty Weekend Sport with Jason Pym and GJ. Guvnerholmes,
New Zealand's most trusted home builder News Dogs MB.
Speaker 3 (33:26):
Coming up fourteen to one. All Blacks play tomorrow morning.
The Bunnings MPC continues this afternoon and tomorrow, but Rugby's
Heartland Championship, true grassroots rugby is underway this afternoon. Games
in Greymouth, Gisbone, Levin, Masterton, Fang and Ui and in
picturesque why He with a home site defending Meads Cup
(33:48):
champions Thames Valley, the Swamp Foxes take on Mid Canterbury
and in a repeat of last year's Meets Cup final
Thames Valley.
Speaker 13 (33:57):
When they've needed to have been this afternoon superb and
there's an example.
Speaker 3 (34:02):
Have they won the penalty too to finish it? And
that is what it means.
Speaker 13 (34:09):
Turn the Swamp Foxes here in town and quite appropriately
Quinn Collin seventeen points in the final say it's us
for the second time Thames Valleys Chup champions.
Speaker 3 (34:31):
Amazing scenes last year, so as I say, repeat of
last year's final this afternoon to open the Heartland Championship
campaign for these sites. Teams Valley against Mid Canterbury. In
Why He Teams Valley Rugby CEO Scott Penny is with
us quick check on conditions and.
Speaker 14 (34:45):
Why he just start Scott, great conditions here slightly overcast
but definitely good for rown rugby.
Speaker 3 (34:52):
Before we look ahead, what did it mean to the
union and the rugby community to win silverware last season.
Speaker 14 (35:00):
I mean a lot to us. We've done a lot
in our community to boost numbers and grow rugby within
the valley, but ice on the cake and bring the
Meads Cup home was fantastic for everybody involved. We've come
close over the last few years, so to actually get
the cherry on the top was great.
Speaker 3 (35:15):
You obviously have a wide brief in terms of the
community game in your region. The elite part of it
is only part of it. But as you say, is
it like a cherry on top? But is it also
I guess an aspirational pathway for some of the younger
players in the region, as.
Speaker 14 (35:32):
We're trying to make a pathway right through and we
still run under fourteen's all the way up to the
Swamp Foxes, including on the girls side as well, so
we do see it as a pathway. It's not by
any means perfect yet, but we're making good stripes towards it.
Our growth over the last couple of years has allowed
us to have some really good results. We've taken our
wit and ratio from twenty six to fifty seven over
(35:54):
our other rep teams, So as say they're all trying
to strive to what the Swamp Foxes are making.
Speaker 10 (35:58):
At the moment.
Speaker 3 (35:59):
You're reappointed your coaches David Harrison and Joe Murray after
last year's success. I guess that wasn't a tough decision
to make. Have you retained most of your players as well?
Speaker 14 (36:10):
No sort of coaches And I say just a quick
mentioned for Harry who's also the New Zealand Heartland coach
this year and nixt which is great for him. But yeah,
those two guys, they sort of don't get the accolades
that I think they should get because they do have
achieved a lot over several years. But we haven't held
a lot of players from last year. Really. I think
(36:31):
there's eleven new people into our squad, But I mean
a challenge is like you think everybody's in the same
boat right through the whole whole Heartland. A good thing
for us is this five Swamp fox has playing in
the NPC over the last two years. So again, it's
got to be a good time for parplays, isn't it.
Speaker 6 (36:46):
You know?
Speaker 3 (36:46):
And I guess that's a that's a really good way
of looking at it. Do you do you take pride
in the fact that that players, if they are to
leave teams Valley for an NPC side, for example. That's
a feather in your cap rather than a blow to you.
Speaker 14 (37:00):
Definitely, it's we're all about giving players opportunities and if
an opportunity comes along at the higher level, then it's
got a I take that approach right through from our
schools as well. If we've got a school kid that's
going to get a better opportunity in one of the
biggest cities, then that's got to be a win for us,
And if we can keep the pipeline going, then it's
got to be good for the valley.
Speaker 3 (37:19):
I guess for the coaches as well, that must be
quite the challenge, Scott, because you know, if you've got
the same bunch of players coming back, you can I
guess in some regards lock and load what works so
well last season. So so your coaches, I guess have
their own challenge of reintegrating or integrating would you say
eleven new faces into the team?
Speaker 14 (37:37):
Absolutely, and I think we showed that and then we
checked another couple of curveballs. Everybody saw the difference between
professional rugby and amateur rugby with our ninety seven nil
against the Nake and the Shield challenge, great experience, but
it just shows the gap between the two levels. And
then we played a very strong Harlequin's team and why
kat To have taken their development strong as well. So yeah,
(37:58):
I hated a lot of challenges out but again, like
I said earlier, challenges that are good for any squads.
Speaker 3 (38:03):
You're in why Heat today. You've also got home games
in the Ottaha, Coramandel and Paidoa. Is it always your
intent to share the home games around It is.
Speaker 14 (38:12):
We don't have an actual home and we don't have
a stadium in the valley, so I challenged my staff
and we only run it with four staff to take
our game to the community. As long as we get
the buy in from the clubs, it is great. Like
we're in Wahi today and we've got multiple volunteers all
helping us make this day come alive.
Speaker 6 (38:30):
So it is.
Speaker 14 (38:31):
We've got Siadraha and they've had a few games and
obviously the Meads Cup final was a success for them.
But we're also going up to Coramandel, which is going
to be great. Haven't taken a game up there, but
we're taking the East Coast up there in a few
weeks time. So between that and then coming back to
Pyroll for our last home game this season. So yeah,
it is a challenge for us, but again we like
these sort of things and coming out and getting amongst
(38:53):
it is great for us.
Speaker 3 (38:54):
And how would you describe the overall health of the
grassroots game of rugby in your region?
Speaker 14 (39:01):
We're doing really well. There is a lot of negative
talk and if you if you only listen to the
to the me and things going on, rugby's in a
bad way. But if you look at our stats, we're
actually going the other way. We don't have any statistics
where we're going backwards. A couple of platawed off and
the juniors, but everything else is rising and including a
massive increase in our women's rugby, so we are going well.
(39:23):
We're trying to coach our coaches, which obviously is going
to take a lot of pressure off a lot of
the staff and stuff like that because we have more
and more helpers. But now we're really happy with the
growth in the valley.
Speaker 3 (39:33):
I remember you were coaching for a while. Do you
miss it?
Speaker 11 (39:36):
Ah?
Speaker 14 (39:37):
Yeah, I do, as long as my board aren't listening.
Speaker 6 (39:43):
Here.
Speaker 14 (39:43):
They challenged me to get off the grass all the
time and just stay in the office. I do really
struggle with that, but no, if you can get the balance.
I do really miss it. I miss the camaraderie of
the boys and because you're not this day and age,
especially in grassroots, you're not just a coach. You're even
your mentor some to your dad figure. There's a lot
more to it than just coaching rugby these days.
Speaker 3 (40:02):
Good Man Scott, Well, it sounds like TAM's Valley are
very safe hands excited season ahead for you. Thanks for
joining us this afternoon.
Speaker 6 (40:08):
Mate, appreciate it.

minds going around and Strawn Hugo Porter standing by to

ahead of the first of two test matches between Argentina
and the Your Blacks in Argentina. An honor to get
the chance to bring an Argentinian rugby legend Ugo Porter Dylan.
Speaker 4 (43:39):
Play Hotter.
Speaker 15 (43:43):
Time for the drop kick and an amazing drop goal
by Potter, absolutely amazing. He could not have seen the
goal before he took that shot. Who patter, He's been
well locked after in the field. Play for two drop goals,
playing a big part in these teams for you.
Speaker 3 (44:03):
What a player he was for Argentina. Just on the
show now a lah Ugo, thanks for joining us. How
confident do you feel ahead of the first taste against
the All Blacks in court Doba?
Speaker 16 (44:16):
Hello, Hello to everybody there in New Zealand and my
old friends there in New Zealand. I'm always messing your
country and looking forward to go back there.
Speaker 17 (44:27):
But we are very happy to welcome the Old Blacks
in Argentina. You know, we are always optimistic when the
when the Pumas are playing, though we know how powerful
the Old Blacks are, but we all wait in the
(44:49):
match with a lot of expectation and we'll see what happened.
Speaker 3 (44:54):
For a long time, of course, the poemers couldn't beat
the All Blacks, but that one three of the last teen,
is there more belief now that they can match up
with the All Blacks.
Speaker 17 (45:06):
Well, you know when when you bid them once you
think you can make them more times. But anyway, we
have to be realistic and we know about how powerful
the Old Blacks are, So when you got a team
playing with a Puma jersey, anything can happen, especially when
(45:28):
they are playing here in Argentina. They are playing in Cordova,
which is going to be a very special occasion for
the people here in the province, so we are all optimistic.
I think the main thing will be to have a
a good match and a good performance by by both teams.
Speaker 3 (45:50):
The poem has beat the British and Irish Lions in
June and then had two losses to England in July.
What did you make ug of their performances and those matches.
Speaker 17 (46:03):
It's always good to have a win like the one
we have again is the Lions, but it's very difficult
to have to performance in the to have a performance
the same way then when you have a big win.
But anyway, you know, this is a completely different game
from the one I play. It's all it's a professional game.
(46:26):
They are all the time thinking in the game and
making analysis on the games of how they must play,
and I'm sure they will try their best in this occasion.
But anyway, the All Blacks are making a big impact
here in Argentina, especially in Buenos Aires. The people are
very keen of having them here. They've been to a
(46:48):
soccer game the last weekend and I think they are
very well welcome in Argentina and we give them a
warm welcome. So we will see. It's going to be
a very interesting game to see with the.
Speaker 3 (47:05):
All Blacks one of your favorite opponents to play against, Hugo,
you know, it's.
Speaker 17 (47:15):
Always good to play against. When you're young and you
are playing for your country, you always want to play
against the.
Speaker 4 (47:22):
Best, and.
Speaker 17 (47:25):
We were always looking forward to face the Old Blacks
in New Zealand or in Argentina. So I think that
feeling never changed for a Puma. It's always very special
to play against a team that has been world champions,
and you know how powerful and popular the Old Blacks
(47:51):
are around the rugby world.
Speaker 3 (47:53):
Now that famous taste in nineteen eighty five when you
kicked all twenty one points in the twenty one Old draw,
What do you remember most about that game?
Speaker 17 (48:06):
I remember that we finished very close to the thing
goal of the All Blacks and we were very close
to bid them. But anyway, for me, it was an
unbelievable experience that I will never forget.
Speaker 3 (48:21):
Who were some of the players in the All Black
jersey who it was most memorable for you to play against?
Speaker 17 (48:30):
Well, there were many, many good and great players and
I have the opportunity to play with them and to
play against them. I wouldn't say one David Pirk was one,
Dave Loveridge was another one, and there were many. I mean,
(48:50):
if I give you a name, I will not be
really How can I tell? I will not be really fair?
So so I think it was a pleasure to play
against and with them.
Speaker 3 (49:07):
Anyway, what sort of style are Argentina playing right now?
And do you like the style of rugby dire playing?
Speaker 18 (49:18):
I think I don't know a lot about the rugby
they play today because there's been a lot of analysis,
a lot of information that we don't have when we
used to play rugby.
Speaker 17 (49:30):
And I think that's in the culture of every country.
I mean, we will never play like the All Blacks
because we are a different culture. We are Latins. We
will probably try to play more like the French. But anyway,
the rugby that I like is to keep the ball
alive and to run the ball, and to play a
(49:52):
fifteen man rugby, an open rugby.
Speaker 3 (49:55):
Now, yes, and I remember you playing that way you
go and everybody just loved watching it. Do you think
these days there's perhaps a bit too much structure, a
bit too much analysis in the game of rugby?
Speaker 17 (50:09):
Well probably, yes. I've never played professional game, so that
makes me completely free of taking my decisions inside the
field when I was playing. I think today the game
is so professional, and you got the coach that is professional.
Everybody is waiting for you to do what the coach
(50:31):
is telling you to do. But anyway, I think that
the players that are making the difference are the players
that got their own mind, their own way of thinking,
and their own way of executing things. So I disagree completely.
For example, my friends were very keen when the spring
(50:53):
Books were playing and the coach was with one flag
of one color another flag of another color to tell
the players what they have to do. I think you
must not be a robot. You are a human being
and you have to have your own way of thinking
and making your own decisions.
Speaker 3 (51:13):
Now, indeed, indeed, just finally, what would it mean for
the Argentinian rugby team and rugby fans in Argentina for
the Pumas to beat the All Blacks for the first
time on home soil.
Speaker 17 (51:29):
It would be amazing. I mean I always said that
I was going to be alive to see the Pumas
beating the Old Blacks, and I was lucky enough to
be alive. If I I probably could be very keen
and happy to see them beating the Old Blacks in Argentina.
(51:51):
It would be great for our people, it would be
great for the country and for our rugby.
Speaker 3 (51:56):
I'm sure you'll be around for many more years yet
ago who knows it might even happen this weekend. Thank
you so much for joining us. It's been a great
pleasure to talk with you.
Speaker 17 (52:05):
Thanks very much for remembering me, and send my love
to all the people that I've been through in New Zealand.
Speaker 3 (52:13):
What a champion of a man, Hugot Porta joining us
out of Argentina ahead of the first test tomorrow morning
between his nation and our nation and the Rugby Championship.
That game in nineteen eighty five, the second of November
nineteen eighty five. I vividly remember watching that game. This
would have been around about the same time. I guess,
as we're going to watch these games tomorrow, sort of nine.
(52:37):
I remember it being sort of a like a nine
o'clock kind of thing. And Ugo Porta kicked four penalties
and three drop goals twenty one all against the All Blacks,
the closest, as I said before, they've ever come to
beating the All Blacks in Argentina. They've done it three
times now away from Argentina. Once was on neutral territory
in Australia and Covid times, and then in christ Church
(53:01):
in twenty twenty two and then last year in Wellington.
Listen to this team though, This team of All Blacks
who played against Argentina in nineteen eighty five. Front row
Brian mcgratten, Hicker Reid and Steve McDowell locking the scrum,
Andy Hayden and Gary Wetton, the loose trio, Mark show
(53:23):
Jock Hobbs and Murray Mextead. Dave Loverage was half back
and Hugo Porta mentioned him there. Wayne Smith at first five,
Warwick Taylor and Victor Simpson in midfield, Craig Green on
the left wing, John Kerwin on the right and Karen
Crowley the fallback man. There's some names in there, some
names in there, So what are you predicting for tomorrow morning?
(53:45):
I feel like we'll win the game, but then I
think the All Blacks will win every single game they play.
You'd want an improvement, wouldn't you, on what happened against
France in terms of the totality of those three matches.
The All Blacks themselves admitted they were short in a
bunch of areas, but then you look at the team
that they've named and there's clear intent here. The team
(54:05):
that they've named for this match tomorrow morning the strongest
they could have named with the players available. The only
two I think who would be there if they were
fit are Wallace to Titi and to Mighty Williams. Otherwise
it's probably the strongest team. It's probably the team that
you know, and again that we players coming back in
(54:26):
the likes of cam Roy Garden, perhaps others, but the
bulk of this team that plays tomorrow morning will probably
play against South Africa at Eden Park on the sixth
of September. Just quite keen to know what you're expecting
tomorrow morning. We're going to break it all down after
the game. As I say, we start the show tomorrow
after the full time whistle or shortly after the full
time whistle, so plenty of chance to chat about it tomorrow.
(54:47):
But if you had some preliminary predictions, they keen to
hear those oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty one
twenty one back. At the moment, it's.
Speaker 2 (54:55):
More than just a game weekends for It with Jason
Vine and GJ.
Speaker 1 (55:00):
Gudnomes, New Zealand's most trusted home builder, News TALKSB.
Speaker 3 (55:04):
News Talks HEB and Weekends. We'll keep you up to
date with live sport across the afternoon, including Heartland Championship,
Bunnings NPC and Chatham Cup semifinals. Two of those to
come starting at two o'clock kicking off at two Eastern
Suburbs Wellington Olympic. Wellington Olympic are the current holders of
the Chatham Cup. Auckland United against Nelson Suburbs who have
(55:26):
never won the Chatham Cup and I don't think I've
ever been to the semifinals. Big day for supporters of
Nelson Suburbs as their team take on Auckland United. Just
a couple of scores if we can bring them up.
Nothing through yet from Thames Valley Mid Canterbury, but we
will keep you up to date. And as far as
the Farah Palmer Cup is concerned, we've had the Bay
of plenty one of a two game man over two
(55:47):
winning at forty five thirty one North Harbor against Tartanuki.
Kicking off at around about two thirty this afternoon will
certainly keep eyes on that for you. You keep saying
it's our best side for getting Lomax and roy Guard
both will potentially be back for the South African Test. Yep, yep.
I think roy Gard will see be there, Tyrel Lomax
(56:08):
hoping he'll be okay. But like I say, I think
it's the strongest team that is available. I don't think
there's any tinkering here. It's not a sort of half
and half proposition. As far as Razor is concerned, he
wants to go out clearly with a statement tomorrow morning
(56:29):
and from there we'll see how we go. And I
guess the interesting part of this will be what he
does next weekend. If in fact, the All Blacks do
get the job done tomorrow morning, will he be tempted
to tinker or with that being the only test between
now or then sorry and the South African Test eatin Park,
(56:51):
will he say, look, I'll roll out the same team,
build some more combinations there and then they'll hit the
ground running, hopefully in that sense. On September sixth, we
wait and see nine o'clock tomorrow morning. Plenty of chances
to chat about it afterwards here on News Talk No
luck for the kiwis meantime on night one at the
New Zealand Darts Masters, all of them exiting in the
(57:13):
opening round at Spark Arena. The heavyweights are all through,
Luke Littler, Girwin Price, Stephen Bunting and Luke Humphreys all
through to the quarterfinals. The voice of darts and one
of the most recognizable figures in the sport is leading
referee Russ Bray, and Russ Bray is here in New
(57:36):
Zealand for the New Zealand Darts Masters and joins us
on Weekend Sport. Russ, I remember we spoke at the
back end of twenty twenty three and at that time
you were leaning towards retirement. Did you sort of lean
away from that after we spoke.
Speaker 6 (57:52):
No, I'm actually not retirement. I'll just sort of step
down from all the majors. So I don't do the
World's or the gone POAs Grand Slands Premier Leagues anymore.
But I still do some of the World Series and
I still do the Asian Tour. But fortunately for me,
the World Series includes bar Rain in New York, Australia
(58:12):
and obviously out for you guys here in New Zealand.
So I've not actually retired, but just stepped down from
all the major stuff, but still get the chance to
come out and see you guys and girls out here.
Speaker 3 (58:22):
Well, we're delighted to have you here, Rusty, do you
feel like you've struck a good balance there that you
know you're not doing as much but you're still keeping
your hand in and enjoying the stuff that you are doing.
Speaker 6 (58:34):
In all honesty, nineteen was my busiest year. I was
home indoors in the UK for sixty one days, actually
in my house. This year this year, though I've stepped down,
I'll be home indoors eighty two so I'm still really
really busy and i love every minute of it.
Speaker 3 (58:53):
Well, that is great to have you here. Can we
talk about last night our kee we boy, Marke Cleaver
up against Luke Littler. He gave him a decent run
for his money, didn't he Before Littler eventually won six
or four?
Speaker 6 (59:03):
He did, He did give him a good run for
his money. It was good to is Ram and I've
known Mark for a long long time since I've been
coming out here, and yeah, he put up a really
really good show, good entertainment. Show for the crowd as well.
And you know, an it times go close like that,
especially against the world champion, you know, it makes it
that much more exciting. And he cooked himself very very well,
(59:25):
better than I expected. If I'm going to be honest with.
Speaker 3 (59:27):
You, I know this is a question you probably get
asked the law, but Luke Letler's arrival on the darts scene,
how much has it elevated the sport?
Speaker 6 (59:36):
All the sport was the sport was viol in the
cross of a way massively anyway, But then when you
get the injection of the of the sun, so to speak,
you know that he's just he's just made it massive message,
certainly for the youngsters in the sport. Now all the youngsters.
There a lot of academies turning up all over the world,
(59:57):
not just in the UK and Europe, all over the world,
and you've got kids that goodness me from four years
onwards into these academies on the back of Luke Littler.
You know, I want to play darts. I want to
do darts. I want to do this. I know for
a fact with my company Unicorn, the sales have gone massive,
the same with all the other guys. You know, so
(01:00:18):
at the end of the day, the the you know,
the way Littler has bought things forward, It's why it's undescribable,
if I'm being honest. This just took it to major,
major levels. And he has as well, you know, with
the way he's playing and his whole persona. I think
it's it's just amazing.
Speaker 3 (01:00:38):
How do you evaluate the way that he's dealt with
it all, because he's still a very young man, isn't
he in the highest glear of the spotlight? How do
you evaluoate how he's dealt with it.
Speaker 6 (01:00:47):
I think he's dealt with the absolutely well superbly. You know, say,
the kid's eighteen. I called his final winning was sixteen
a couple of years ago against low comforts, and you know,
his way above his years in his well, the whole
look at the leg I mean they had a bed
at seventeen. So you know, he's very very mature lad.
(01:01:11):
And he's learned how to cope with media, cope with
the crowd and COVID a pressure in the game itself,
you know. And I just say he's very very advanced
as he is, and he is genuinely a lovely kid.
And I'll try and tell some people sometimes please remember
he's still a kid. Eighteen, He's a kid, and I
haven't they even started to scratching service of living life
(01:01:33):
at the moment. And you know, it's good to see.
It's good. I like the exuberance of the lead.
Speaker 3 (01:01:39):
Indeed, we had Stephen Bunting on the show last week.
What have you seen from him in the last couple
of years that has elevated his game and his profile?
Speaker 4 (01:01:48):
Do you know what?
Speaker 6 (01:01:50):
It's some of all the guys, but certainly with Stephen,
it's just believe. I mean, Stephen's got the talent, he's
got the ability, and he's proved at a million of
month times. But it's just having the belief that you
can get up there and do it. I mean even
the Video World Title Championships, the Lakeside and I mean
feet in itself, and then when he came over to
(01:02:13):
the p DC, you know, the talent was a lot
better in strength there in debt and he's just in
finding his feet now. Now Stephen believes he can win.
He believes he can win, and that's the big, big difference,
and you see it in his game and you see
again you see how he holds himself on the stage there.
(01:02:37):
He's a good kid, good character and a really really
good gold player. Now you know he's he's way way
up there and it's good to see. And this is
what this is what has happened within the PDC. This
has happened with the letter effect. Lot. We just mentions
that you have to be better, you have to be
more consistent to compete. And that's exactly what Stephen goes
now and he believes that, and that's that's the biggest thing.
Speaker 3 (01:03:00):
And look, Humphreys world number one. Still of course that
he's a bit out of sorts at the moment. He
won through ik last night a six three O I
hope by Paul ha What is the beast thing rush
for a player to do when when they're not playing
as well as they'd like to.
Speaker 6 (01:03:17):
Again, that comes down that the biggest muscle, Lot is
a bit between your ears. I've always said that, you know,
everyone go up there and the arms and nighties. Everyone
can go up there at double sixteen because they do.
But he's doing it on a on a regular basis,
doing it consistently. Last week. I know for a fact,
look wasn't very well, he didn't travel very well into it,
(01:03:39):
and he was pretty sick. He was feeling good a
lot better this week, which he showed. But with respect
to that, it's if you're you've got to play through
it all sport. That what sport. It is his peak
and socks. When you're peaking fantastic. When you're in a trough,
it's half far you trough down. You know Phil Taylor,
(01:04:02):
if I can go to him. When Phil Taylor was peaking,
nobody touched. When he was not on his game, his
level of game was still most people's a game. So
there's a big difference. And this is what you need
to find or what the guys need to find. And
they're not fightingally well, I haven't practice as hard as they.
(01:04:23):
Maybe I sort of. I don't know what a feeling
a bit under the weather because you've got a battle.
So it again, it comes down to the bit between
years believes you're going to do it, and that's that's
the psychology of the game. And that's sometime I think
it's quite important.
Speaker 3 (01:04:37):
Rus the players even surprise you at the white I
attack a chick out.
Speaker 6 (01:04:43):
Someone. I mean, I'm going to get on my old school.
I'll go back to the goodness, may I'll go back
to the seventies and eighties where it was really basic
shots out, you know. But these guys now, I mean,
goodness made they're going for double doubles and all. This
sort of thing is never unheard of when I was
and I was in the game early doors, you know,
So yeah, it's now from my perspective, it's a matter
(01:05:07):
of getting used to the guys hitting double double shots out,
you know, one hundred and one hundred and twelve and
things like that, where they're sort of going just really
really crazy way, you know, double a double in double
top this type of thing. You know, it's mental, it
is mental, but yeah, it don't surprise me sometimes because
(01:05:28):
you're wondering where they're going. They've got a quick calculation
as to where you think they might be going next.
So yeah, it's good. It's good as what I was entertaining.
It's good funds in and going there. And of course
they use the bulls eye a lot now, yeah, and
they never used two years ago. The bull's eye has
a big shot out for them and everyone loves it.
Speaker 3 (01:05:44):
Yeah, absolutely, And obviously you're still sharp airs with the
with the maths and doing the calculations in your head.
Can I give you a couple of chickouts and get
you to tell me how you think a player would
a ticket?
Speaker 6 (01:05:57):
Yep so one hundred and thirteen, Travel twenty thirteen, Double Top.
Speaker 3 (01:06:04):
One hundred and thirty eight.
Speaker 6 (01:06:07):
Well, very famous, a great man, mine Keith, Trouble Team double.
Speaker 3 (01:06:12):
Twelve, love it and one oh one.
Speaker 6 (01:06:18):
Obviously there's a billion and one ways on it. There's
Trouble seven eight balls.
Speaker 3 (01:06:21):
Though, Russ. It's just a delight to have you in
New Zealand, a delight to have you on the radio again.
May there be many more conversations between us. Enjoy tonight
at the second night of the New Zealand Darts Masters.
Speaker 6 (01:06:35):
It's lovely to be over. Thanks ever so much, mate,
and hopefully catch up and have a chat.
Speaker 3 (01:06:40):
So yeah, look forward to that, Russ. Thanks indeed, Russ Bray,
the immistakable voice, the voice of darts. He's here for
the New Zealand Darts Masters at night two from seven
o'clock quarterfinals Stephen Bunt and christ Toby, Luke Humphreys, Damon
hetter Gowin Price against Josh Rock, Luke Littler against Mike Dedecca.
Those best of eleven legs, then into the semis best
(01:07:01):
of thirteen and the final the best of fifteen legs
at Spark Arena for the New Zealand Darts Masters. Terrific
stuff twenty four away from two.
Speaker 2 (01:07:12):
All weekends for it.
Speaker 3 (01:07:13):
Round three of the Bunnings ENDPC continues this weekend. Two
of the unbeaten sides going toe to toe in toadong
Are Bay of plenty Canterbury Bay have Plenty beat Tasman
thirty seven seven impressively in round one and then Counties
Manico thirty nine to twenty two. Canterbury somehow got past
Wellington thirty three fifteen in round one and then beat
Auckland narrowly nineteen fifteen last weekend, so both two from two.
(01:07:36):
Nick Beiley has the call on gold Sport and iHeartRadio
A bay of plenty favorites? Are they favorites by virtue
of being at home?
Speaker 19 (01:07:45):
I wanted to pull you up about that Wellington comment first, Jason, WEO,
good afternoon to you. Ah. Look I think they are.
And I just had a quick look at the Gamble
Responsibly tab website and they are a dollar fifty favorite
the Steamers, and I think that's understandable given there at
home last on these two teams met was at the
todong Of Domain in the semi finals last year, Bay
(01:08:06):
of plas Anty winning that. But look, I think last
week it was a little bit more of an endurance
test for the Steamers to get the job done against
County's Monika as you mentioned, very impressive against Tasman, whereas
Canterbury stylistically it's been a little bit different but more
of a grinder. Had difficult conditions last week against Auckland.
(01:08:26):
But how how that Auckland team scoreless in the second half,
So yeah, it would be interesting. The old adage styles
make fights, well, fights make styles. Styles make fights g wiz.
So look, I'm intrigued to see how it goes. A
lot of class across both teams and as you mentioned,
effectively top of the table, so one oh has to go.
Speaker 3 (01:08:46):
This is just tremendous stuff.
Speaker 19 (01:08:48):
Cliches after Russ Bray, jeez, I feel a lot a
lot out of my depth here Piney, So I'm trying.
I'm trying, mate, I'm trying.
Speaker 3 (01:08:58):
I felt like an eleven year old boy talking to him.
Speaker 4 (01:09:00):
But here we are.
Speaker 3 (01:09:02):
You mentioned the two sides when you run your eye
down the team lists who catches the eye as potentially
the key men for either side this afternoon.
Speaker 19 (01:09:11):
I think the midfield will be a really interesting battle.
Good to have Brandon in all back for Canterbury, missed
that win over Auckland. And look, he's a guy who
I still think he's got a fair amount to give
to New Zealand Rugby's resigned with the Crusaders for another year.
He has had his injury setbacks, but just a very
smart operator both with and without the ball. So he'll
line up at center and he'll mark up against fair
(01:09:33):
He figna noful who has been a real standout talent
of course through the All Black Sevens program, made a
real name for him South and Super rugby, I thought
this year with the Hurricanes and now playing in the
midfield with Bay have plenty of course, have got Ammony
Nadawa and Leroy Carter over in Argentina not picked for
the All Blacks Test tomorrow, but there are thereabouts within
(01:09:55):
the squad, so I think that'll be one interesting battle.
And then speaking of contrasting styles, he got the battle
of the number sevens as well with Tom Christie. Just
a tackling Tyro. He's of course off to England the
Newcastle at the end of this NPC season, but he's
just he's an all effort player for canterbre at number seven.
But Vivinnie las Suger who went down and played for
(01:10:15):
the Highlanders and Super Rugby. He's currently leading the Dwayne
Monkly middle standings for the top NPC player and there's
a bit to like about the way he goes about
his business. Lasunger and very dynamic sort of new breed
open side flankers. So there's just a couple, but as
I say, there's plenty of class across both teams and
conditions look good, so all in readiness for what should
(01:10:39):
be a really promising contest.
Speaker 3 (01:10:41):
Just on that Tom Christie news that he is departing,
was that in any way a surprise.
Speaker 19 (01:10:47):
A little because he worked his way back Pioney this year.
He was actually outside of the match day twenty three
at the beginning of the Crusader season, was asked to
work on a few things within his game, and then
through injury, got an opportunity and then his form was
such that he just played continuously through right until the
end of the Crusader season culminating in that.
Speaker 3 (01:11:07):
Super Rugby title.
Speaker 19 (01:11:08):
So I was a little bit surprised. I understand there
wasn't there was an offer on the table for him
to stay, but given the circumstances, given the stage of
his career as a twenty seven going on twenty eight,
and this buyout by Red Bull of Newcastle. I don't
know the numbers, but from what I have read, you
know it could be the best part of him making
(01:11:29):
double money to go overseas. So I don't begrudge Tom
Christy and it will be fascinating to see. I know
the name Ollie Mathis has been bandied around as a
potential replacement for the Crusaders, a real talent out of Waikato.
So look a little bit of a surprise, but can
understand why Tom's made that decision.
Speaker 3 (01:11:46):
Hey, Louis Chapman, have you seen much of this? I
was gonna say, k he's not read ID anymore. He's
about twenty five. Have you seen much of Louis Chapman.
Speaker 19 (01:11:53):
Well, actually had Louis Chapman as as a co commentator
during the Super Rugby season. He stepped in and did
a very good job in a Crusaders Highland. His game,
I must say, but he's a christ Church kid. Had
to go away because we've had, you know, such quality
in terms of half backs with Mitch Drummond and Willie
Hines and the like. He played a few seasons up
at Tasman. Effectively it's ended up being a trade with
(01:12:16):
Mitch Drummond's going to tas Louis Chapman coming back for Canterbury.
But I think he's just slotted into the red and
Black environment seamlessly. He's got a very calm game about
him in terms of his game management. Does a lot
of kicking, a lot of box kicking, and yeah, there's
something about him. I like Louis Chapman.
Speaker 3 (01:12:32):
He's good man, good stuff and do you have an
expert comments man today or comments person?
Speaker 19 (01:12:36):
Well, funnily enough, he's just text me to say I'm here,
so I better wrap this up lasting quick. But it
will be a real pleasure actually, first time to be
joined by Matt Todd. So of course a Canterbury a
Crusader's sort of cult hero if you want to call
him that. Part of the Crusader's coaching staff these days,
and he was part of the Canterbury coaching group last year.
He's given that up to James Lynchies's now the new
(01:13:00):
Canterbury defense coach. But yeah, Matt Todd's going to come
join me in studio and whenever I'm done.
Speaker 3 (01:13:05):
With you, Jason all right, with a twenty five test
matches you forget, don't you? He was a decent player,
Matt Todd. I don't want to hold you up, but
he was pass that on. If you'd like, I'll let
him know.
Speaker 19 (01:13:14):
That'll mean a lot, and I'm sure Graham will let
you know too that he's a very very good player,
very well loved down here.
Speaker 3 (01:13:21):
Point love it mate, Enjoy the colt. Nick Bierley has
got the Capon Gold Sport between Canterbury and Bay of Plenty,
kicking off just two o'clock with Matt Tyd alongside in
expert comments. Brilliant stuff eighteen to two when we come
back across the Tasman Adam Peacock in his regular Saturday slot, The.
Speaker 1 (01:13:39):
Tough Questions Off the Turf Weekend Sport with Jason Hine
and GJ. Gunnerholmes, New Zealand's most trusted home builder news Dog.
Speaker 3 (01:13:49):
One forty five on text My son came home from
the darts last night showed me some picks on his phone.
He is now a convert. The crowd was amazing. Yeah,
that's a big feature of it, isn't It sold out tonight?
As I understand it, the second night of the New
Zealand Darts Masters at Spark Arena. Let's get him across
the taen as we always do it around about this
time on Saturday afternoons, our Australian correspondent Adam Peacock to
(01:14:11):
update us on sporting matters from across the dirtch the
Rugby Championship. Adam begins tomorrow morning. Your Wallabies up against
the spring Box and what will no doubt be a
cauldron at Ellis Park and Johannesburg. How optimistic or not
do you feel about this?
Speaker 7 (01:14:28):
Yeah?
Speaker 20 (01:14:29):
Not really given the given the venue in South Africa
are pretty you know, ready for it. We've just had
three brutal tests against the lines as well. Who knows,
like that old quote iron sharp and zign that that
could be the determining factor in the Wallabies could really
hit their rhythm straight away or they could be found
out in Yeah, let's space. It's a pretty challenging place
(01:14:50):
to go, given the opponent, given the crowd, and given
the altitude as well. So yeah, there's yeah, like we
hope and it's more about that with the Wallaby still
under Joe Schmidt and like we're seeing signs and obviously
that last test in Sydney was brilliant, but this is
different proposition altogether with this mob. And yeah, they're big pack,
(01:15:10):
and they're big pack on the bench and they're big
they're big sellers in the crowd willing them on. So yeah, intimidating,
but hope that they can serve up a pretty pretty
good performance.
Speaker 3 (01:15:20):
Now I thought Nick White had retired, but here he
is number nine on his back and James O'Connor outside
of it. Ted it's a bit of a throwback.
Speaker 20 (01:15:28):
Yeah, so James O'Connor out of necessity, it looks like,
and he was in the line squad so he was
a round about. But yeah, you're right, Nick White. I
mean we had a famous singer over here in John Farnam.
He kept on doing farewell to us. He had a
at eight of them. I don't know, I don't think
Dave Dobyn did something similar over there or someone else,
but Nick White just decided two weeks after retiring from
(01:15:49):
the Wall of His to play for the Wall of
His again. Obviously not his choice, but yeah, I look,
experience will count in an environment like that, so cool head.
It's probably not the place to be blooding someone at
the age of twenty two, So we'll see if it works.
Speaker 3 (01:16:03):
Good point, that's early as to tomorrow morning and Joe
bur let's go to the NRAL Round twenty four. Already
delivering the storm, beating the Panthers and Golden Point to
snap Penroth's nine game winning streak. The Rooster's running over
the top of the Bulldogs to move into the eight.
The Warriors squeaking back into the top four. Look, what
is the top four going to be? Do we even
know what the top eight's going to be?
Speaker 20 (01:16:23):
Yeah, that's the trick at the moment, there's a few
moving parts. The Roosters have come good against expectations, so
that's a bit of a wild card that's going to
upset what we thought was going to happen. Mainly but
the Warriors, I mean everyone presumed that they were going
to drop off, and they puffed it out last night
in Auckland. Obviously, helped by the fact that Dragons had
three players ko, including two taking each other out. But yeah,
(01:16:46):
I just looked at the Warriors draw and it's a
good one. So I think Andrew Webster last night wasn't
overly thrilled with the performance. That was pretty happy to
squeak out one. But I think there's a bit of
improvement to come with the cattle that they've got left
the Warriors and yeah, I can see them actually with
the draw that got and the fact that Penroth has
to Yeah, they've got two really tough games I think
(01:17:07):
in the next couple of weeks. So I think they've
got the Raiders and the Dogs, so yeah, that last
fourth position is going to be tight. I don't think
the Broncos have enough, especially now to the top four,
talking about with their helve there, So yeah, Penrith and
Warriors for that top four and then the top eight.
I think the Roosters go in now after last night
that was fantastic against the Dogs. So yeah, a lot
(01:17:28):
happening in the next couple of weeks in the lead
up to the final and.
Speaker 3 (01:17:30):
To finish today, some interesting comments from Cricket Australia chief
Todd Greenberg this week warning the existing calendar off test
cricket could lead cricket boards to bankruptcy. He's calling for
fewer test matches. What do you make of those comments.
Speaker 20 (01:17:43):
Yes, it's probably a rational thought and it's taking the
emotion out of it is hard because it is test
cricket that's been around for a very long time. But
just be honest, like, look at this calendar. This calendar
is going to look different in the next five years
with cricket because if you bring in a Champions League
for ten twenty and the IPL start picking off franchises
(01:18:04):
around the world, or ipal owners start picking off franchise
like around the world what they have with one hundred
over in the UK, it's going to happen to you here.
As a big basher, I'd say that Indian investments coming
as well. This is going to be a franchise model
where you might have five tournaments through the years that
those franchises play. So then it's the calendar squeeze. And
like talking to New Zealand favorite Australian Brad hadden't about
(01:18:26):
the fact that the West Indies when he was over there,
they just had no appetitse to test cricket. They're players
because they earned two hundred grand if they've got a
contract playing Test cricket for the West Indies, someone like
Nicholas Porins on about five million years. I mean, you
don't have to be a master of economics to realize
that what choice the player is going to make. So
(01:18:48):
it's just going to be exceedingly difficult for these nations
to keep playing Test cricket with their best players, and
you don't want them to play Test cricket without their
best players. So that's I think the balance that they're
trying to strike, and I'm kind of tight unfortunately that
there's going to be less Test cricket in the future played,
which might crystallize it a bit and make them more
special those Test cricket events. But yees are changing lands
(01:19:08):
to go for sure.
Speaker 11 (01:19:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:19:09):
I think he said Scarce tody better than quantity or
something along those lines. But yeah, we see, we wait
to see how it plays out. Always good catching up, Adam,
thanks for your rap of Australian sport. Will do it
again next Saturday. Fine one, you have a good one
to mate. Adam Peacock out of Australia this time or
thereabouts every Saturday afternoon nine to two. Jason says this text,
can you please talk about or mention the curtain raiser
(01:19:31):
at Eden Park this afternoon? Of course, we've got the
Bunnings MPC match at Eden Park, Auckland Taranaki, kicking off
at four thirty five, the curtain raiser. There might be
more people at this one, the one A final. This
is the first fifteen final in Auckland. Saint Kent's against
King's College. Well, I don't know. I don't know one
(01:19:52):
A rugby very well at all. Who would be favorite?
Let me just check the latter. King's College were top
of the top of the regular season if you like,
ten wins from eleven games, and Saint Vents were second,
although equal on points with Sacred Heart. Then grammar so well,
I don't know who would be favorites. Sint Kings don't know,
(01:20:15):
it'll be a Cracker says this text. One A is
great rugby. Yeah, as I understand that there's some quality
of rugby being played, I know that secondary school sport
can sometimes get a bad rap when things don't quite
go the way that we would all like it too.
For me anyway, The adultification of kids' sport or secondary
school sport. But yeah, I get the feeling it'll be
(01:20:36):
another cracking contest this afternoon when the one A final
has played. As the curtain raiser re Leeding Park two
twenty kickoff, We'll try and keep you up to date
with some scores. King's College against Saint Kent's for the
one A title twenty twenty five. Back in a moment
on Weekend Sport.
Speaker 1 (01:20:51):
Breaking down the Hail Mary's and the every fails Weekend
Sports with Jason Pine News Talk ZENB coming up.
Speaker 3 (01:21:00):
Four to two. Text hero in the semi final between
Grammar and Kings, it was thirty two to all and
they don't have golden point, which is a bit of
a shame in a semi says the text. So they
used first to score in the game. Is that right?
That because because Kings scored first they went through to
(01:21:21):
the final. That doesn't sound right. Surely it's done on
table position. I've never in my life heard of a
game that's level at full time being decided on who
scored first in the game. Please clarify. It would feel
to me as though. The much more common separator is
(01:21:41):
if it's a drawer at full time who finished top
in the regular season in a semi final situation like this,
first to score in the game. I've never heard of
such a thing. Ken, We get a shout out and
says this text to the under eighty five's North Harbor
against Auckland. Just finished some of the best rugby I
have seen, Harbor coming away with a thirty six twelve one.
Thank you very much for seending that through. After two,
(01:22:04):
we're in the Tall Blacks Camp finals of the Asia
Captain Night against China. Point guard Taylor Britt going to
join us after two.
Speaker 1 (01:22:13):
The only place to discuss the biggest sports issues on
and after fields.
Speaker 6 (01:22:18):
It's all on Winter and.
Speaker 2 (01:22:19):
Ford with Jason Taine on your home of Sport.
Speaker 4 (01:22:24):
US talk to seven.
Speaker 3 (01:22:26):
Welcome back to weekend Sport. In case your mister to come,
then inside the Toll Blacks Camp, Premier League Football sal
GP and your chance to win with a sporting chance
this hour plus all the live sport to keep an
eye on two. Before we move though, just on the
text we had before to two about the one A
semi finals, James says, Jason, I think it was the
number of tries scored by each team. King scored five
(01:22:50):
and grammar four, so Kings went through. Thanks James, And
I've got more explanation from Matt here. A very good explanation. Actually,
he says that text is wrong and most tries won
the process is first of all, World Rugby has said
that there's no extra time under nineteen rugby. Okay, that's
fair enough. I get that. So the winner shall be
(01:23:10):
the team that scores the most tries. Fair but then
goes on to say, if the team scored the same
number of tries, the winner is the team that scored
the first try. See that seems odd to me. I
don't see what the significance of scoring the first try is.
It's almost as though it should be the last try.
If the number of tries is even, I feel like
the winner should be the one that got the last try.
(01:23:31):
Almost equalizes Andy, I reckon it should be the one
that kicked the ball out the most, if you well, Oddly,
if no tries were scored, the winner shall be the
team that scored the first points. If no points were scored,
so a nillall drawer, the winner shall be the team
that won the game in round robin, and if the
round robin game was drawn. The winner will be the
(01:23:51):
team they had the best four and against differential during
round robin play. There you go.
Speaker 21 (01:23:55):
But what if they have the same same Is it
team with the most left handed players? How far down
do they go?
Speaker 3 (01:24:03):
It's the team with the most year elevens ah, Yes, yeah,
the youngest team wins. That's right. Good to know, Good
to know that there is a process in place. Thank
you for those texts. The upshot of it all is
that we have the one A final this afternoon. Looking
forward to seeing how it goes. Two twenty so about
to kick off at eden Park King's College against Saint
(01:24:25):
Kent's All the best of both sides. Auckland United have
scored early in that Chatham Cup seeming against Nelson Suburbs.
They lead one nilt in that game nil all between
Eastern Suburbs and Wellington Olympic eight minutes into their game.
We'll keep eyes on that. And no score yet between
the Tunny Far and the Muckel nil all there and
(01:24:46):
Canbury Bay plenty also locked at neil All. I think
that's got us out of the way of all the
live sport and the mopping up we had to do.
So let's move as we always do it around about
this time, which is nine past two on weekend sport.
Let's get you across some of the stuff you might
have missed in case you missed it. Beginning of the
Para Palmer Cup defense optional as the money were two

Speaker 22 (01:25:09):
Volcanic and leading them with some sternder kids starting to
wheel around, now getting some ascendency. Here are the Cyclones
Febriad that tucked in underneath and they score a try.
The Monitu Cyclones first.
Speaker 3 (01:25:24):
More try of the game forty five thirty one the
final score. Luke Littler is through to the quarterfinals at
the New Zealand Darts Masters.
Speaker 19 (01:25:31):
Things up instead of a clash with Mike Dakka.
Speaker 4 (01:25:35):

ended up winning it ninety eighty, six and we now
Faced china in the. Semifinals eleven o'clock, Tonight New zealand.
Time we're joined by point Guard Taylor, britt who suffered
an ankle injury in the quarter final and was forced
to play just a limited. Role so let's start, there can. We,
(01:28:12):
taylor how is the? Ankle are you going to be
okay for the Semi? Yeah, yeah they're a little banged,
up but she'll be right all. Right good, stuff that's
good to. Hear good to get the injury report out
of the way. First, now can we talk about the
first quarter Against. Lebanon what on earth happened in that first? Quarter,
yeah that's a great.
Speaker 26 (01:28:31):
QUESTION i guess like we, knew we knew the intensity
that they play with the really passionate group of, players and,
yeah IT'S i guess it's still caught us by surprise
and they got on top of us there.
Speaker 27 (01:28:47):
Throwing the first punch like. That but, yeah it definitely
was not an idea where to start the.
Speaker 3 (01:28:52):
Game, yeah thirty two twelve at quarter, time but you,
know you could easily have let that define the whole.
Game it. Didn't but is there much you can do
when a team's just shooting the lights out like? That,
YEAH i guess it's on us to come together as
staking eat it as a.
Speaker 26 (01:29:11):
Group and, REALLY i Guess honan, defensively there was a
great crowd, there which you know drowned out a lot
of our. Talk so we just needed to be better
talking and staying connected as five people on.
Speaker 3 (01:29:23):
Defense what sort of messages were you, know you're being
given by your coaching, staff you, know what sort of
conversations when you could hear them we're going on out,
there and particularly at halftime as, well you know you're
still fifteen, behind but it really sort of got better
from there.
Speaker 26 (01:29:38):
On, YEAH i Guess juddy towards the end of that
first quarter just really put it out on the table
there basically just challenged. Us it's just saying that we
weren't playing at the with the physicality or effort that
we needed to, do so he challenged, us AND i
guess from that point on we responded as a playing.
Speaker 3 (01:30:00):
Group was there a point at which you thought the
game had swung back in your favor or was swinging
back and you you had the momentum of the.
Speaker 26 (01:30:08):
Game i'm not sure if there's a pin, point BUT
i think you, know we knew that basketble as a
gamer runs and twenty points is you know it's it
was done the day before in the our own, Game
so we knew it was. Possible and we just need
to stay and stay together as, it stay together as
(01:30:29):
a group and slowly chip away at. It AND i
guess it when it gets to single, digits you, know
anything can really happen at that.
Speaker 3 (01:30:36):
Stage do you get a sense from your opposition that
they're not necessarily panicking but realizing that you guys are
on the charge and it's down to single digits and
you're getting closer and. Closer can you sense that in
your opposition as?
Speaker 26 (01:30:50):
Well, Yeah i'd Say i'd say they'll probably feel how
we were feeling in that fresh, quarter like they couldn't
get stops and you, know couldn't make. Shots but, YEAH
i THINK i think as the game goes on and you,
know it starts to get a bit, close that you
definitely get that.
Speaker 3 (01:31:08):
Feeling so how much confidence do you take forward into
the semi final and not saying that you want to
take the same strategy again and come from twenty one points,
down but how much confidence do you take from overturning
a deficit like that to win such a big.
Speaker 26 (01:31:21):
Game, yeah we'll definitely try its to avoid that that,
strategy but, yeah it does give us. Confidence you, know
we've got twelve guys here that can, play and our
depth was really shown last, night guys Like CARLIN i
thought he came in and changed the game with his
(01:31:44):
energy And maximo doing what they've been doing throughout the.
Tournament but, yeah it give us a lot of, confidence you,
know coming back from twenty that you, know we've seen
that if we do the right things and what we've
been asked to do.
Speaker 27 (01:31:55):
That the results follow after.
Speaker 3 (01:31:57):
That how gutting was it for? YOU i, mean everyone
wants to, play, Right i'm sure you wanted to carry.
On did you just come to the realization that you're
just the ankle was no good and it would be
better for the team if you if you sat down
for the rest of the. Game hard as that decision
would have, Been.
Speaker 26 (01:32:13):
Yeah, yeah it's always, tough kind of JUST i just
SAID i could do what do WHAT i was needed to,
do and you, know we were we were playing, well
So flinny was doing a great job out there taking
control of the, team and, yeah just stayed. READY i
guess if IF i was IF i was, needed but, yeah,
(01:32:34):
luckily LUCKILY i wasn't.
Speaker 3 (01:32:35):
Needed all, Right but you're going to be okay for the,
Summer like you feel like You're we're going it strapped
up and you'll you'll be good to. Go that's the,
PLAN a good plan to what are the parts of
The Tour blacks game that have got better as the
tournament has.
Speaker 26 (01:32:49):
Progressed we've got a real emphasis on pace with this,
group AND i think we've been doing a really good
job on on. That so, far but that THAT i
guess where we went wrong in that first. Quarter we
weren't rebounding the. Ball we gave up sex or so offensive,
(01:33:10):
rebounds which made us play at a pace that we
don't want to be playing. Yet So i'd say that's
been the bit that's been really really good for us
progressing every.
Speaker 3 (01:33:21):
Game how do you reckon you match up Against? China
we haven't looked at looked at them.
Speaker 26 (01:33:28):
Yet we're about to have a film, session so you,
know we like our chances against Eve run in this.
Tournament if we play the brand Of tiblack's bickecle that
we're looking to, play you, know we feel like we
can beat. Anyone SO i think it's on us and
then we'll look at what we can do in terms
of scout in a couple in a couple of.
Speaker 3 (01:33:49):
Hours you made a comment before about the about the. Noise,
yeah it sounds like The lebanese fans make quite a
bit of noise even during the. Haker how did you
respond to?
Speaker 26 (01:33:58):
That, yeah it was quite quite. LOUD i was next
To natai and he was, leading AND i could we
could hardly hear, them but you, know it's it's. AWESOME
i guess we as players want to play in environments like.
That it's, yeah it makes the makes the game a
lot more entertaining for. US i guess we're responding to
(01:34:21):
that challenge that they've been the fans of set. Then,
yeah it's a lot of fun playing in environments like.
Speaker 3 (01:34:28):
THAT a Few kiwis in the crowd as. WELL i
saw a few Few kiwi flags and black. Singers you've
got a bit of bit of on the ground support over. There,
yeah we've seen a.
Speaker 27 (01:34:37):
Few we've seen a few out.
Speaker 4 (01:34:39):
There you.
Speaker 27 (01:34:40):
Know it's always good to see The kii flags out
in the.
Speaker 3 (01:34:43):
Crowd good, stuff all, Right, well hopefully they're hopefully they're
there for the semi. Final i'm sure there will, Be,
taylor thanks for joining. US i hope the ankle's, Okay
strap it up and get out. There look forward to
seeing how you. Go Taylor britt point guard out of

Speaker 3 (01:37:26):
Its Heah liverpool tuner up Before bournemouth equalized with fourteen
minutes of regulation, time remaining The red squad in the
eighty eighth and Then mosella with that goal in injury.
Time let's bring in senior writer turned commissioning editor at
The ATHLETIC, Fc Dominic. Firefield Dom great to have you
back on the. Show what did you make of the
start Of liverpool's title?
Speaker 28 (01:37:47):
Defense, WELL i think it probably showcased everything about the
Current liverpool, team And i'm talking about the team That
slot has now. Constructed Ana slot has now constructed a
new team really compared to Last four players made their debuts,
tonight which is the first first time four players started
(01:38:07):
for the champions on the opening of the season for a.
Generation it's really ridiculous really.
Speaker 11 (01:38:12):
When you consider.
Speaker 28 (01:38:13):
That BUT i think we've throughout the preseason we've Seen
liverpool opening teams, up creating.
Speaker 11 (01:38:21):
Chances this very exciting new front line clicking to a certain,
extent showing flashes of their.
Speaker 28 (01:38:28):
Quality hu Going tk as the man that's really taken
it on with goals in The Community, shield and this
evening Against, Bournemouth Cody gak postings to be relishing. It
mostsella look more like himself today compared to A wembley last.
WEEK i think we're still to see a bit more
Of Florian. Viits so you saw a lot of their
attacking verve Against, bournemouth but you also saw the flip
(01:38:52):
side of. THAT i think the weirdly and, okay they've
changed both fullbacks in kirkcases now they're in fring pongs
now There actually it was when those guys left the
pitch That liverpool looks fragile the evening AND i just
think there's a bit of uncertainty.
Speaker 10 (01:39:10):
About the back.
Speaker 28 (01:39:10):
LINE i think the team is adjusting to Incorporating Florian
vitz as a number. Ten there's less protection in midfield
as a, result and there's defensive fragility there And bournemouth
absolutely exploited that as teams have through pre Season Crystal
padis did At wembley last. Week in The Community shield as,
well there is a vulnerability there which does not necessarily
(01:39:35):
it's not suggestive of a team that is likely to be. Champions,
however very very early days and these guys are bedding.
In we've all we all know What liverpool have been
through this summer and the commemoration For Giogo jotta tonight
was impeccably, done absolutely wonderfully, done and that is a
(01:39:56):
trauma that is deep seated and given the amount of
upheaval as, well this summer At liverpool is going to
be a bit of time before everything clicks defensively and
and offensively to make that.
Speaker 11 (01:40:08):
Team what it can.
Speaker 28 (01:40:09):
Be BUT i think in the first few weeks of
the season we will see opportunities for opponents when they
Play liverpool and teams will go into games against them
thinking they've got a chance to to inflict damage on
that back. Line so that actually just adds to it.
All it makes a bit more drama in the in
the at the start of This Premier league, Season.
Speaker 3 (01:40:30):
Arsenal closest To liverpool last year second for the third straight.
Season what do they need to do to take the
next step and be champions for the first time since
what three to? Four and can you see them doing
it this? Season, well they you're probably.
Speaker 28 (01:40:47):
Right they are probably closest on paper though given them
maybe because of the amount Of uphea will manage the
city as. Well what they need to, do they need
to hit their new signings needs to hit the ground running.
BASICALLY i, mean you, know gokaash has come in as
the elusive number, nine that the plan that they've been
craving for for years and they finally landed and he's
(01:41:09):
prolific In, portugal did wonderfully well At, sporting but he
has to he has to transpose that form straight away
onto The Premier league to alleviate some of the pressure
that will accompany a big money signing like, him but
also as THE x factor that That arsenal lacked last.
Speaker 11 (01:41:26):
Season that they've got similar.
Speaker 28 (01:41:28):
Demands really of Zoo At Zubi mendi in midfield as,
well who comes with a, huge huge reputation From spain
and a player That arsenals have courted for a long,
time and he has to make an immediate impact and
if he, does the squad looks, Strong the squad looks,
stronger And Mikael arteta will believe, that you, know this
(01:41:52):
season can be their. Year they have won them since
THE Fa cup in twenty. Twenty they haven't won the
league for twenty one. YEARS i think that was the
thing which is remarkable in, itself that was the invincible.
Season so it's it's a massive year for Michaelile. Teta
he's been, Backed they've spent heavily in the. Summer the
(01:42:12):
new guys have to geil quickly and what a test
to start their season At Old trafford On.
Speaker 11 (01:42:18):
SUNDAY i mean that's you know last season you'd have
gone there with a lot of.
Speaker 28 (01:42:21):
Confidence this year With Manchester united having a new front,
line that's that looks a trickier fixture.
Speaker 3 (01:42:27):
Now well that's seaways nicely Into. UNITED i don't know
that we can ever fully confidently predict what to expect
From Mentester. United but what do you expect or what
should we expect From united this? Season?
Speaker 28 (01:42:39):
WELL i was listening To Gary neville On The teddy
this evening and he was asked that very same. Question
he suggested that sixth place this season would be a
major achievement For Manchester united And Ruben amerim and he's
probably right in, fairness given how poor things were last
year and the chaos, really but a whole preseason For
amerim to try and get his ideas across to a
(01:43:01):
squad that still needs to be. Streamlined they still need
to bring get players out of that, club having sanctioned
another vast, outlay despite the fact that you, know three
months ago they were making The Tea lady, redundant that Old.
Trafford now they've spent two hundred million pounds on three
new players up. Top so it's it's a strange. Scenario
it's a strange. Situation they're not going to be fixed.
(01:43:23):
Overnight that that is a team that is still in.
Development even chesch. Go you don't, Look chessco might score On,
sunday we. Might we might get very carried away and
think he's going to be that he's a finished article
and he's going to score thirty girls and the New Earling.
Harland BUT i suspect what will happen over the course
of the season is he will have ups and downs
and it will be a learning process for him.
Speaker 11 (01:43:42):
In a new, league having arrived from The bundesliga With.
Speaker 28 (01:43:45):
LIGHTSING i, mean it's it's it's a it's going to
be another patient's job really With, united BUT i think
they have that frontline is exciting and if they can
Incorporate bruno founders into their team as well and get
him a role where he can influence that attacking three
and it doesn't imbalance the whole team too, much then
(01:44:06):
they will pose a threat going forward and the players
should be better suited now more accustomed To Ruben amerin's
three four. Three so there is promise. There there is
a promise of a better season than they injured last.
Year and you, know the lack Of European FOOTBALL ua
for competition this season might actually benefit them because it
will give him more time on.
Speaker 11 (01:44:25):
The training ground to get his ideas.
Speaker 3 (01:44:27):
Across loverpool's victory last, year of, course snapped a fourth
season winning streake For Manchester city always going to be
there or there about you to imagine what should we
expect in the blue half Of mancheester this.
Speaker 28 (01:44:38):
Season city are remarkable, REALLY i mean they've again another
one of these big. Clubs in the theme of the,
summer the big clubs had endured difficult seasons last time,
around and we were sat here talking about how the
middle class in The Premier, league The Brentford's Crystal, Palace Brighton,
(01:44:58):
bournemouth how they'd sort of risen to the forum and
looked as if they were threatening the big clubs monopoly
really of Of Premier league and the honors. Board that's completely.
Changed the big clubs have reimposed themselves this. Summer they've
taken the best talent away from those other, clubs that
middle class of. Clubs city are in. There city's investment
(01:45:21):
is colossal with, summer absolutely, colossal AND i mean.
Speaker 11 (01:45:25):
It'll be intriguing to see how they.
Speaker 28 (01:45:27):
Do absolutely intriguing because it feels almost a bit like
the first season under pet where they made so many
changes and it took team players time to.
Speaker 11 (01:45:40):
Settle so you might get.
Speaker 28 (01:45:42):
You, Know Ryan cherkey And ryan Out newey doing good
things With city immediate from the. Off BUT i think
others are going to take a. WHILE i, mean treated
see how to Journey riinders does load they brought From
milan in the, summer and treat to see how Whether
James trafford ends up being.
Speaker 11 (01:46:00):
Their first choice, goalkeeper which is a remarkable.
Speaker 28 (01:46:03):
Transformation but equally you look at the the players that
they're letting. Go there's reports that seeing That Rico, lewis
who was highly highly rated last last couple of, years
really at the city might be Joining Nottingham forest now
because they have to balance the books and and bring
money in.
Speaker 11 (01:46:20):
Because of the outlay they they've put on. Players and
you know there's No kevin De bruyner there in that group.
Speaker 17 (01:46:26):
Either so it's an unfamiliar.
Speaker 28 (01:46:28):
Feeling it No Carl, walker he's gone To, burnley so
it's it may be they they need to adjust for
a while and again if they have a slow setup
and the danger is that A liverpool or An arsenal
might steal a march on them and that gap can't be.
Bridged the other, one of, course in there Is. CHELSEA
i Mean Chelsea, Club world, champions best biggest team in
(01:46:50):
the world at the moment, allegedly but with a great
squad with a lot of strength and, depth and they
will pose more of a throughout this Season i'm sure.
Speaker 3 (01:46:59):
Just On forest or you mentioned The Aaron Chris ward
of course twenty goals last. Season, gee we enjoyed Watching
forrest And Chris ward and were in and around the
top four for a while eventually, seventh of, course, sir
can they go? Again or you know? What what what
do you predict For forest this?
Speaker 28 (01:47:15):
Season it's been an insane last few, days in the
last forty eight hours really At Nottingham forest has been
ridiculous that they've.
Speaker 11 (01:47:23):
Brought they've done, that there's.
Speaker 28 (01:47:25):
Splurs absolutely spent a lot of money in the last
few days on players that should all be confirmed in
a in a sort of flurry in the next twenty four.
HOURS i Mean macateef For Manchester city is one of
those Who Enricoe lewis could join, him AS i.
Speaker 11 (01:47:44):
Say his Former city. Teammate but they've got exciting.
Speaker 28 (01:47:48):
Players i'm not sure that you know the manager is
particularly pleased that it's taken so long for them to,
recruit for them to bring in players BECAUSE i think
he sees the value in working with as close to
his final squad as possible through pre. Season SO i
don't think he thinks he's going into the season with
a team that's.
Speaker 11 (01:48:09):
Ready to fire from the.
Speaker 28 (01:48:10):
Off they'll also have A european football in The Europa
league to contend, with so, look it would surprise me
if they were challenging For Champions league qualification in the
way they did for the vast majority of last. Season
it was only really in the last month they tailed off.
Badly but if the new players do well and thrive
(01:48:31):
there and and do well Under, nuno and if he
is appeased and if he is happy and content at
the city, ground then The forests have got some very
very good players in their group and a chance of
certainly a top half finish and going deep In european,
competition which you, know if they win The Europa league
(01:48:51):
and emulate what ton Of hatsford did last, season they're
in The Champions league next.
Speaker 3 (01:48:55):
Year and of the promoted, sides dom as always intrigue
around which of them can come up and stay? Up Les, United, Burnley,
Sunderland Great. Dave then begon there who feels best equipped
to to make a galve and at least stay.
Speaker 28 (01:49:09):
Up you, know this is the biggest guess in the
world BECAUSE i think everybody over here has been blown
away about the amount of money That someland has.
Speaker 11 (01:49:18):
SPENT i think it's one hundred and forty million pounds
in counting on twelve thirteen new, players.
Speaker 28 (01:49:26):
Which on paper you look at the signings and, think,
well some of them could be quite. Good they spent
a lot of, money they could be.
Speaker 11 (01:49:32):
Brilliant but we.
Speaker 28 (01:49:34):
Should also remember What burnie did two years ago where
they spent a similar amount of.
Speaker 11 (01:49:37):
Money and.
Speaker 28 (01:49:39):
Nose dives straight out of the division again and it
was all. DISRUPTED i Think bernie will go into it
in a different way this. Year they've had the experience
of recent relegations and they won't be as expansive and
open as they as they were und a incant. Company
Scott park will be a lot more down in his
approach and that might actually benefit them in terms of getting.
(01:49:59):
RESULTS i don't think it'd be attracted to, watch but
they have at least got a bit of. Experience but
then you, know they too have Had i've lost key
players as well as bringing them in in the summer
and Leads leads should be in The Premier league Like.
Sunderland really you can argue that with the fan base
and the and the history and the everything that's set
(01:50:21):
up they have, There but you, Know i'm not sure
they've got the players at the moment to do. It
SO i think all three of them will. Struggle they
will struggle for long. Periods that's not to say they
might not have successful opening. Weekends you, know you can
See leeds Beating everton potentially On, monday particularly With Jarre.
Baranthwaite on The everton, side you could you could See
(01:50:42):
sunderland potentially beating west Ham on On saturday at home
at a raucous stadium of. Light BUT i think it
will catch up on. THEM i think the gap in
qualities is too. Big their big hope this year is
that clubs like Maybe, wolves Possibly brentford have have not
(01:51:03):
strengthened enough and can be court and maybe well at
least held down there in those relegation places or around
them for a, while which will give the promote the
promoted clubs a chance of dragging them into the. Struggle
but you, know the last two years have shown three.
Up i've gone straight back down again the last two
(01:51:25):
years and they need. To but somebody's got a butt that,
trend BECAUSE i don't think it's a good look for
The Premier. League and perfectly, HONEST i think somebody has
to stay up and give it a. Go BUT i
couldn't tell you which three will all.
Speaker 3 (01:51:37):

Season The Black foils top of the leaderboard for the
first time Since january after winning the last Rig attit In.
Portsmouth flight Controller Leo takahashi joins us out of The Black. Foils,
leo thanks for joining, us. Mate how was your practice
day on the waters of The Baltic.
Speaker 27 (01:55:10):
Sea, yeah it's been.
Speaker 23 (01:55:12):
Lovely we've actually only got up for one day, training
but you, know the condition has been. Great it's been
really warm and we've had a really nice northwesterly, wind
warm and, shifty.
Speaker 27 (01:55:22):
And the conditions are going to be great for the.
Speaker 23 (01:55:24):
Weekend we had our practice day today and you, know
pretty uprange conditions and, yeah we've got some good.
Speaker 3 (01:55:29):
Training AND i see a couple of a couple of
boats came to grief. Today you were able to avoid.
That were there any are there are there parts of
the race course or or features of the conditions that
you know that you do have to be a bit aware.
Speaker 23 (01:55:42):
Of, yeah it was just quite a tricky day because
the you, know the wind was up and then the
wind is coming straight off the. Headland there of sas
needs and, yeah we made for some really, challenging, tricky shifty.
Speaker 27 (01:55:54):
Conditions so had to.
Speaker 23 (01:55:55):
Be definitely on our game today and, yeah for our
day one training is definitely spicy.
Speaker 3 (01:56:00):
Conditions what did the win in the last event In
portsmouth do for the team's?
Speaker 27 (01:56:03):
Confidence oh, yeah it was great confidence.
Speaker 23 (01:56:07):
Booster you, know we knew we had it in us
and you, KNOW i know we hadn't you, know done
too well in the in the events earlier on the
season AFTER i went and dubai.
Speaker 27 (01:56:16):
It but you, know we've been kind of chipping away
in the.
Speaker 23 (01:56:18):
Background we've been getting a couple of podiums and just
waiting for the stars to, align and and yeah it did.
Importantly we sailed a great, event and, yeah it was
a really good moral bus to coming into the the
rest of the.
Speaker 27 (01:56:29):
Events now that the cadence of the events picks, up.
Speaker 3 (01:56:33):
Are you sailing the boat differently or are you just
trying to do what you have been doing? Better not necessarily.
Speaker 23 (01:56:42):
DIFFERENTLY i think there's definitely a few few things that
we can be a little bit more accurate at and
a little bit better at and find little improvements here and.
There but, no we're just trying to refine everything at the,
moment you, know we know we can sell the boat
well and at the top of the at the top
of the. League so, yeah just just all about coming
together and letting all the all the things align it
and then getting good, starts picking the good shift and
(01:57:04):
then stay on the boat really well and. Accurately and,
yeah it just came together for us and brought. Tomouth
so now we's got to you, know take, that take
that and find a good way to put it together
again for the next few.
Speaker 3 (01:57:15):
Events you talk there about aligning, things AND i would
imagine that there are a lot of things that need
to come together to sell what would be a perfect.
Race where do you when you're when you're, preparing how
do you decide where to place your focus to get
the best returns in terms of? Improvement, YEAH i mean
sailing is such a cool. Sport there's so many different
(01:57:36):
variables you know that come to.
Speaker 23 (01:57:38):
Play there is the, wind the, tide the, conditions and
then you know how you know how every athlete on
the boat is feeling on the, day and we all
have to work together as six people on the boat
have to you, know gel together and work as.
Speaker 27 (01:57:49):
One so that's the really cool part of.
Speaker 23 (01:57:50):
It and, YEAH i guess you, know we look at
the conditions every day and we have our playbooks and
how we take those conditions on and you, know just like,
today it was, shifty, windy so we had to sell
a boat differently sometimes not take too much, risks but
you know there's other teams that are taking more risks
and sometimes it pays.
Speaker 27 (01:58:07):
Off so, yeah that's the kind of way we look at.
Speaker 23 (01:58:09):
It and, yeah there's so many different little, things little
avenues that we could be. Refining but, yeah sometimes you,
know you just got to pick on the, pick pick
what you can pick your. Battles and you, Know portsmouth
it was a different kind of. Condition it was a
little bit choppy and, wavy and you know there's a
lot of things on the course that could get in your.
Way so it was all about sounding. Smart so, YEAH
(01:58:30):
i Mean satans is going to be a different. Ballgame
it looks like a really windy forecast, tomorrow so you
can definitely lose the events on the first, day definitely
not win.
Speaker 27 (01:58:38):
It so you've got to just stay in it for The.
Speaker 3 (01:58:40):
Sunday you're still on the tfoils that you're still using the, tfoils, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, Yeah,
hey good, day hang of.
Speaker 23 (01:58:46):
Them, YEAH i think, SO i, think you, know they're
definitely level of the playing field with you, know how
how good they are of.
Speaker 27 (01:58:55):
Control but the high speeds and, yeah.
Speaker 23 (01:58:58):
The way they both have come together now has made
it really challenging for the For pete And live to
navigate the.
Speaker 27 (01:59:03):
Course, so you, know they're. Great had a new addition to.
Speaker 3 (01:59:07):
This how's Youp did it feel like a new toy
for you when they arrived or and was there any
sense of trepidation about?
Speaker 27 (01:59:14):
Them, oh they're.
Speaker 23 (01:59:16):
Awesome you, know any any new piece of technology or
kit hands on is always going to be like a you,
Know christmas, Present so it was cool to call to
learn them and, actually you, know, yeah now since we're
getting the hang of, them and then the boat speeds
are getting higher and the racing is getting more.
Speaker 27 (01:59:33):
Exciting it's it's it's been really fun for the for
me and the.
Speaker 3 (01:59:35):
Team you Mentioned leo earlier, that you, know at the
start of the, season after Do by which went so,
well things you, know didn't go quite the way you
would have hoped for a couple of regattas there as
a new member to the, team did you feel any
internal pressure when things weren't weren't going the way you
were hoping they.
Speaker 23 (01:59:51):
Would, YEAH i, guess you, know as a, Sportsman you're
always going to feel some kind of, pressure and, yeah
LOOK i would be lying IF i say it didn't
feel but you, Know andy's a great sailor and you
know there's definitely some big shoes to. Fill but that
was definitely up for the challenge AND i KNOW i
had to have it in me And i've put the
work in the, background SO i just had to back
(02:00:11):
myself AND i had a great supporting team family and
friends that have kind of helped me through.
Speaker 27 (02:00:17):
It and it's been really it's been really.
Speaker 23 (02:00:20):
Cool AND i thought at home and this, team so, yeah,
YEAH i just can't haven't been able to thank the
team enough to be honest for being so. Supportive AND
i feel, like, yeah it's all coming together. Now so
definitely just got to keep chipping away at it and you,
know Come Abu, dhabi we just got to be in that.
