double pass before the show closes at three o'clock this afternoon.
Last Weekend's lost by the All Blacks two South Africa
has certainly set the cat amongst the pigeons and has
many fans now more than a touch nervous about the
upcoming bled Uslow Cup tests, both at Eden Park and
across in Perth. Could the vice like grip the All

(06:04):
Blacks have had on the bled Uslow Cup, which stretches
back well over two decades, be about to loosen? Massive
pleasure to welcome into the show the voice of the
Wallabies on stand Sport and Channel nine, Sean Maloney.

Speaker 7 (06:17):

Speaker 7 (06:37):
How words is there?

Speaker 2 (06:38):
Tom Right's going the other way? Tom Right?

Speaker 8 (06:41):
Tom rides down the edge Tom right back in till
Oh my goodness, this is just too good, this is
existing too all of his sense.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
Absolute delight for Sean Maloney who joins us now. Our
congratulations made first of all on your passionate and precise
calls on Wallaby's matches, which we're very much enjoyed over here.
What was your reaction to the All Blacks record loss
though to South Africa last weekend?

Speaker 7 (07:11):
Absolute shock, Absolute shock, So Matte, I'd done that afternoon
game at the SFS, all of these Argentina, and then
I actually had to bounce off to a charity night,
so I checked out at ten to seven half time,
and at the beginning I had to host the night,
so I didn't get that full time score until much

(07:31):
much later than full time, and I was floored by
the result. I couldn't I couldn't work out what had happened,
got home, watched the highlights on STAN and still still
now I can't believe that's what transpired in that second half?

Speaker 3 (07:47):
Wild So are they all Blacks now vulnerable?

Speaker 2 (07:51):
No, we had no.

Speaker 7 (07:54):
We had Sunnyville on our show on between two Posts
on Stan, which I think Sky and Zed takes as well.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Yep, on Monday, and.

Speaker 7 (08:05):
He lightly highlighted that if he was a part of
an all that extendent lost the game, that they weren't
supposed to lose, or if they got touched up that
it was The next game was just like. The response
was brutal, and I'm expecting the same again at Eden
Park next week. So vulnerable. No, I think they're going

(08:26):
to come out spitting fire. And I'm not thankful in
many ways for what Africa did last week.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
They did, though, have a various very obvious game plan.
They didn't against the All Blacks, which featured a significant
aerial assault. That's not something which is deep in the
DNA of Australian rugby sides. But do you expect that
they will take notice of what South Africa did and
take parts of that into their game for these next
two test matches?

Speaker 7 (08:53):
Oh jeez, that's a good question, mate. I'm going to
probably go no. And you know, while say no, because
we tried that on Argentina and it didn't work out.
It didn't work out at all, throwing those contests schools
up and giving Georgo a chance of push through even
s Eli and Corey Taur and I just I reckon

(09:15):
the bouncerball and I was confessables in that game against
Los Premiers would have gone maybe ninety ten in favor
of them. So I can't see I can't see that
happening again. I don't reckon it will so it'll mean
that they'll have to come up with more creative ways
to try and puncture that all blacks defense. I'll tell
you what. It shakes up as a great couple of weeks,

(09:37):
doesn't it. I mean, sure we've had a couple of
stumbles both out sides o these last four rounds, but man, no, man,
when both these teams are clicked, it has been so
good to watchte Oh.

Speaker 3 (09:49):
Look, absolutely we can't wait for the series. And I
think every game in the Rugby Championship has been like that.
I mean, who picked it after four games each everybody
would have two wins and two losses. It just wasn't
on the radar as far as the Wallabies are concerned.
Sean the one over Fiji to start things off, then
the British and Irish lines two of course, then the
shared tests and sow they Africa that she had tests

(10:09):
against Argentina. It's been a busy old year for the Wallabies,
what have you made of them in general terms across
twenty twenty five.

Speaker 7 (10:16):
Well, they are so much improved. They are so they've
come so far in such a short time under Joe Schmidt.
I mean, mate, last we're saying this the other week,
Like you know, if we go back sort of fourteen months,
we were struggling to put away Georgia in Sydney and
we were we had our issues with Wales for chunks

(10:40):
of that series too. So they've just come so far
in such a short period of time. That trajectory off
the back of Fiji was.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
Was great and then.

Speaker 7 (10:50):
Obviously we had that little slip in the first against
the Tests against the lines. But you know, if you
look at all the other minutes of good stuff they
put together across those games, it's excellent. So they're going
in the right direction. They're well led, they're well coached,
and finally, mate, finally we're getting people in gold jerseys

(11:13):
see games. We've got people in hats and scarves and
anything else. God, I can get on and it has
been I reckon, it's been. Probably I'll be going back
maybe twenty years. I must come back to the last
time we hostedly woke up to a game light last
weekend where the crowd was drenched in Wallaby gold. It

(11:34):
was so good to watch.

Speaker 3 (11:35):
Love that, Love that Ellis Park. I mean inexplicable scenes
there at Ellis Park. You know, twenty two nil down
and then thirty eight unuanced points to win it. Where
does that win sit among the great Australian performances you've
seen in recent times?

Speaker 7 (11:52):
Oh, easily the best in recent times. I mean I've
got to that top five all time. And many of
my colleagues who like Timmy Horn had said to me,
he's got the top five all time, and that Blokes
won two World Cups and he's a World Roby Hall
of Famer. Burkie was the same. Maugs is obviously more recent.
Cunt he's the same. So all of us have it

(12:14):
as a top five win in the history, that long
history of the Wallabies. So mate, we'll never forget it.
I still have people stopping now in the most random
spots saying, OI, what about that game against South Africa.
I was up with you, I was up watching We're
all up. I woke my neighbor up, I wake my

(12:35):
missus up, or I woke my husband up. Everyone still
wants to talk about that weeks and weeks later.

Speaker 3 (12:42):
Who have been the standout players on the Wallabies jersey
for you across the year?

Speaker 7 (12:46):
Oh, there's been some good ones, hey, Jason, there's need
some really good ones we have seen. Okay, let's start
with a captain. So now we're now it's irrefutable that
Harry Wilson is that captain going forward. That's a lot
and that's important because he was not a lot going
into the Test series here. So Harry Wilson has been

(13:09):
big phrasement rights all the way. Nick Frost, I reckon
Nick Frost is probably one of the premiere locks in
world rugby right now? Mate? Who else have we got there?
They've all, they've all been really good. Lenniki tau Top
one of the top centers in world rugby. And just
this Max Shorganson one of the top wingers in world rugby.

(13:30):
And I just can't wait to see how far we
can ride this sewer alite train as well made because
he is going more and more into the game of
Ruby union and he could be special.

Speaker 3 (13:42):
Yeah, how care far can we ride that train? Because man,
what a player he could be. What is he twenty
two years old.

Speaker 7 (13:48):
Yeah he's young, mate, They're all young. MAT's the other thing.
What Jorgo's only just turned twenty one. It's crazy, So mate,
let's ride as far as we can. He he's looking
more and more dangerous with every touch, commits plenty of defenders, looks,
looks for work defense when he's doing the tackling. He's

(14:09):
just he's just quality, mane.

Speaker 2 (14:10):
He's just quality all the way through.

Speaker 3 (14:13):
Now you all know these stats. The last time anyone
beat the all Blacks of Eden Park was nineteen ninety four.
The last time Australia did it was nineteen eighty six. Yeah,
what would it mean to break that record and put
a hand on the Bleader Slowe Cup next weekend?

Speaker 7 (14:27):
It's funny you asked that. I've been trying to wrestle
with the idea of it being close or going close,
and it would mean plenty. But it won't mean I mean,
and I say this absolutely respectfully with the deepest respect,
it won't mean anything unless they can I mean, should
they fluke the wind over there, because I'll be I mean,

(14:50):
I'll be massive. Our guys will be massive underdogs that game,
as you'd expect. And as they should be. But if
they can somehow, I don't know, pull something out and
then we go to Perth with the bloody's on the light,
if they then come on stuck in Perth, it's it's
gonna be as u So it won't mean anyone he
cares about is trying to get that damn trophy back.

(15:12):
So one win will be like, oh, that's great, but
unless they get it back, it won't mean. It won't
mean a whole lot unfortunately.

Speaker 3 (15:20):
Can I just finish with Josh Matt You alluded to
him before in the evolution that he's overseen in this
Wallaby side. Is there any chance he'll continue on in
some way, shape or form when liz Kus takes over
full time.

Speaker 7 (15:33):
I don't know what the transfer or the handoff looks like,
but I do know those who know each other particularly well,
and they're very similar in terms of the way that
they can extract the best of their players and can
really I guess guide them to lofty heights. So they'll

(15:56):
be they'll let's try and do the calendar going forward,
so we'd be looking at yes, so let's onone take
over till July next year, so there'll be that whole
year where Joe will still be I believe in the
employee of Roby Australia handing all that info off. So

(16:16):
I don't know what it looks like beyond that, mate,
but as long as he brings let's up to speed
him already go from July next year, then that should
be sweet.

Speaker 3 (16:23):
Yeah, the world couple be looming by that stage. It's
an exciting sight. We can't wait to have you over
here next weekend for the Eden Park ties. Shawan, thanks
for joining us across New Zealand today though legend see mate,
see you mate. That is Sean Maloney, Voice of the Wallabes,
the excitable voice of the Wallabes. I thought he was
trying to play that down just ever so slightly there.
I thought he might be a bit more bullish, But

(16:45):
then again I guess as he said. He quoted sunny
Bill there from one of their shows over in Australia
in the last week. The response to an unexpected defeat
or are toweling up when you're in the All Blacks
is brutal? Can I take some cause in a minute,
just before we do, just want to circle back to
Liam Lawson, thank you for all your texts and correspondence

(17:05):
regarding the inaccuracy of the front row of the grid.
It is, of course Carlos signs with Max for Stappen
on the front row of the grid, Liam Lawson third,
so for Stappin and signs Liam Lawson with Kimmie Antonelli
and the Mercedes alongside. And we might have said early
hours of tomorrow morning, that's when the race will finish.
It starts at eleven o'clock tonight. Eleven o'clock tonight in

(17:27):
New Zealand time is when it starts with Liam Lawson
third on the grid, Max for Stappin and Carlos signs
the front row of the grid. Thanks to everybody who
pointed out the mistake to us, I appreciate it very much.
So that's what I love about the Weekend Sport audience.
If you do er then they will let you know,
but it's all done in a constructive fashion. Keen for

(17:49):
your thoughts on next Saturday, oh, eight hundred and eighty
ten eighty, when we're chatting on this show a week
from now, will we be talking about the Bledisloe Cup
being locked away for another year or will the Eden
Park Fortress have been breached and will the Wallabies have
the chance to win back the trophy they have craved

(18:09):
for so long in Perth the following weekend. Remember, of
course they have to win both matches. We only have
to win one. Much as the All Blacks were well
beaten last weekend in Wellington, I simply cannot foresee a
scenario under which they lose next weekend as they did
against the spring Box at Eden Park two weekends ago.

(18:33):
I expect them to get up for this occasion. Now
they shouldn't need an occasion, of course to get up four,
but with the Eden Park record on the line again
and more importantly a response needed after what happened in Wellington,
I think they'll deliver.

Speaker 7 (18:50):
As I say.

Speaker 3 (18:51):
Shaw Maloney quoted Tonny Bill during our chat saying when
he was in the All Blacks and they lost or undelivered,
their response was brutal. The All Blacks very rarely lose
two Test matches in a row. It's even rarer to
lose two at home on the bounce. You have to
go back to the Irish Series in twenty twenty two
for the last time that happened. Before that, we hadn't

(19:13):
lost two straight home tests since nineteen ninety eight, and
before that it was nineteen ninety four. The second of those,
of course, was the loss to France at Eden Park,
the last time the All Blacks tasted defeat at the ground.
As well as the response I'm expecting personnel wise for
the All Blacks, Cody Taylor will be back, cam Royguard

(19:35):
will be back. Our best hooker and our best half
back by some distance, so they would come straight back
into the side for me. Cody Taylor having cleared his
HIA protocols, cam Royguard getting through half an hour with
Counties yesterday, you might say he's a bit short of
a gallop, but I'd have him in there from the start,
Taylor and Roy Guard to start. I suspect there'll be
other changes as well, probably in the back three, maybe

(19:58):
elsewhere as well. But whoever plays, this is an All
Black side that was stung in Wellington. They'll gather today
with a singular focus to put it right. And while
Australia have certainly improved under Joe Schmidt, there's no doubt
about that they have significantly improved. The fact remains they
lost their last Test against Argentina and they only won

(20:20):
the previous week with a try and the dying moments. Yes,
they beat South Africa at Alice Park in one of
the all time great comebacks, but they lost the following week.
I just can't see them winning next weekend. Or is
that overly optimistic? Your thoughts welcome, Let's talk some rugby.
Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighteen number twelve twenty
seven back with your calls after.

Speaker 2 (20:40):
This, it's more than just a game.

Speaker 1 (20:44):
Weekend Sport with Jason pine and TJ Gunnomes, New Zealand's.

Speaker 2 (20:48):
Most trusted home builder News talks, they'd.

Speaker 3 (20:50):
Be twelve thirty off to the phones in a moment
a couple of text ough. Mahendra says, I still believe
we're a better side than the Wallabies, but it'll all
depend on how they can clear the emotional scars from
last week. If we can clear those, start well and
play well for eighty will win. Come and hesitate and
lacking confidence giving the oss is a good start and
we are screwed. Thanks Mandra. Perth worries me. Piney says, Simon, Yeah, look,

(21:14):
I'm not going to even think about Perth until next Sunday.
Let's see what happens at eden Park and then worry
about Perth after that. Look at you know the All
Blacks this year have been up and down, haven't they win?
They won an Argentina, then lost in Argentina. They won
at eden Park, then lost to the spring Box the
following week. They may well win at eden Park next
weekend and then if the trend continues, they might lose

(21:37):
in Perth. But I worry about that. I worry about
that next weekend. Text here piney are you going to Perth?
If so, I've got the perfect pub for you, Gage
Road Brewing and Fremantle Quarter owned by yours truly, Mecca,
magic spot on the waterfront, Mecca. I would love to

(21:58):
go to Perth. I would love to go over there.
I've only been to Perth once, it was for a
football game. Love the place and knowing that you are
a twenty five percent shareholder and Gauge Road Brewing and Fremantle,
that would compel me even more to go. Unfortunately, it's
not up to me, but I'll certainly be pitching to
the bosses here for a trip to Western Australia in

(22:20):
a couple of weeks. Fell Hi mate at.

Speaker 9 (22:23):
A pointy how are you.

Speaker 10 (22:25):
I'm good, excellent.

Speaker 11 (22:27):
What a off of that is?

Speaker 12 (22:27):
I'll be kick I'll take your bags and make your coffee.

Speaker 3 (22:32):
You point Macat didn't seem to intimate that he was
going to pay for the trip full, unfortunately. But you know,
at least have we got there, we'd know where to
go there.

Speaker 12 (22:42):
Right there, right there, right now. Yeah, I'm a bit
like you. I'm a bit like The inconsistency of the
All Blacks does cast a bit of doubt. Worries me
a wee bit. But I do think too, because I'm
trying to be positive. Like I said to Andy, I'm
trying to be positive and get that feeling in me

(23:03):
that I think they will come back after a smack
in the face like that in that record defeat and
that and like your guest said that, Sonny Bull said,
you know when you get beaten like that, you know
then they come back. That's brutal and inspired and to
come back and put in a good performance passion. I

(23:23):
wouldn't be because the other thing, too, is like we're
having camera would go back, that'd be great. I thought
Hoping was good although we got beaten that last week.
I thought he was good until did he get off
injured or something.

Speaker 3 (23:37):
Yeah, in the first half he didn't. He didn't play
for very long. Phil that was that was the issue,
and it was such a shame because he's been out
with that ankle injury and then had come back and
only lasted ten to fifteen minutes. But I think he
has probably even with Ratima fit I think Noah Hotham
has probably if not jumped into second spot, then certainly

(23:58):
is contesting hard for that second spot with Cortez Ortima.
I was very sorry to see him go off last week.

Speaker 12 (24:05):
Yeah, yeah, I think so too, and I just I
was just trying to remember, but yeah, I remember thinking
he was going quite well until he went off, and
it was a real shame that he got injured and
went off. And the debut of the Winger was good too,
with the speech stuff. But yeah, Lee Ricardo, he was
good while he was on. But having having the hooker,

(24:31):
oh what Cody Taylor. Having Cody Taylor back will be
a big boost too, because we really missed him last week.
Not to say, you know, bad about the hook that
they brought on, but yeah, we really missed him, I
think too in a leadership role as well, because I
think he's the sort of guy that, although he's not,
you know, the official captain or whatever, but he's probably

(24:52):
one of those leaders type people on the field that
can say like, come on, boys, let's get into it,
you know, and and help to lift them and get
some spirits by them and cheer them up. But the Ausies,
you know, I really I think they're on the way up,
back to the old Ozies. He used to give us
those great games that we used to have and Smith
Smith go a really good so they'll they'll give us

(25:15):
a real good go. I reckon a way she won't
be easy.

Speaker 3 (25:17):
I don't know, well, I agree. Look they like I
said before, you know, I guess I was trying to
paint it into a more positive light for us. The
fact that they lost to Argentina probably should have lost
the previous week, lost to South Africa the week before that,
so you know, they could have they could be coming
here with three straight losses. But they have shone more
than enough to suggest that you're right, they are getting

(25:39):
back to where they used to be. Those matches that
you know, you and I probably remember from the back
end of the nineties only two thousands where we didn't
know from game to game, home or away who was
going to win those games. It was such an evenly
contested trans Tasmen competition between the two of us at
that time.

Speaker 12 (25:58):
Yeah, she was. She was a real ding gong bettle,
like you say, and you didn't. He nextly reminds me
of I say, like, because I tried to ring this
week and I couldn't get in, you know, on the
Saturday or the Sunday, because it's just so busy. But
I was going to say too, because I remember listening
to when you were talking about the loss and what
went wrong and that sort of thing, and it made

(26:18):
me think of an old quote of old Peter fitz Simon,
and you know what a good player he wasn't that?
And I remember he said, I listened to an interview
and he said that those days when he played, you know,
and they come running out onto the field and they've
seen guys like Buck Shelford and Richard Lowe and Sean

(26:42):
Fitzpatrick's standing there. He said, you just looked at those
guys and you just knew they were hard men and
you were in for a real hard game. And I
don't think I think with the all Blacks. That kind
of doesn't happen so much now, you know.

Speaker 3 (26:56):
Yeah, I look at the current light. Yeah, Phil, I
think you probably hit on something there. I think there
was a certainly an intimidation factor. And I'm not saying
that that was the and the all Black speak the
Wallabies on occasion, because as I said, they beat us
just as often. But there was you looked across and
you saw some hard men. And those teams are the

(27:17):
late eighties and the back end of the nineties. You know,
there was some players there. You looked across and you
saw world class players. There are still some world class
players in the New Zealand side. I think your name
a World fifteen and the likes of Artie Savier and
Will Jordan are certainly in those conversations, but maybe not
to the extent that it was good to chat philp.
Hope we can do it next weekend, Pat says Piney,

(27:39):
who at New Zealand Rugby finally woke up and scheduled
a test for five o'clock. Great for rugby, Great for
Auckland Hospital to really capitalize on pre and postgame. Brilliant.
Hope it continues. I still don't know why I haven't
been able to get an answer about, not that I've
already asked. You know, I haven't dug deep into this.
Why this is a five o'clock kickoff because the South
Africa Argentina gamer is in the early hours of Sunday morning.

(28:01):
It's in South Africa, so it's not like they have
to shed a litle around that. Someone told me that
it might be because the NRL finals are on or
the you know, the the preliminary finals and the a
f L Grand Final is on, but that's in the afternoon,
so I'm not sure why that would. I mean, if anything,
you want to stay away from the Aussie Rules Final,

(28:22):
you have it at seven o'clock. And since when if
we worried about what the NRL have done, they don't
care about the All Blacks clearly, otherwise they wouldn't scheduled
the Warriors up against the Panthers directly opposite last weekend?

Speaker 7 (28:36):
Is he on?

Speaker 3 (28:36):
No, why it's a five o'clock Well see if we
can find.

Speaker 13 (28:39):
Out he and Hi mate, Hi Hi Barne. So listenly,
congratulations to Otago. Oh yes, oh yes, Jimmy, that's the
hell of a mess chat one.

Speaker 3 (28:51):
I mean, every ran Philly Shield gave me in this
year has been utterly tremendous.

Speaker 13 (28:59):
At three tremendous what's it four now.

Speaker 3 (29:01):
Par yep four four different places it's been that hasn't happened,
I'm told in for seventy Yeah, incredible, unbelievable.

Speaker 13 (29:11):
He fine, he's Scott Beard well ha been mean he's
get intructured you sooner? Is leadership nonexistent, non existant, strategically
and tactically, not inspiring and motivating. And he is, in
my eyes, it's not even the top four locks in
New Zealand rugby at the moment. Sam Darry's far better

(29:33):
I think on.

Speaker 3 (29:34):
His day and he is among the best locks. I
would say that he is one of the best two
locks in the country on his day. We spoke a
lot about Scott Barrett last weekend and even on Monday
night as well, and I just I don't know. I
wonder whether he might be better off being unencumbered by
the captaincy because I don't know, it just seems to

(29:56):
furrow his brow a lot at the moment. You know,
I don't think they'll make a change, but yeah, I
take on board what you're saying. I think he's a
terrific rugby player. He's been given the captain c. I
just don't know whether it sits as comfortably on his
shoulders as everybody hoped that it would.

Speaker 13 (30:13):
Ardie Chave is far better.

Speaker 3 (30:16):
Yeah, Well he's the other option, isn't it. And that
doesn't help Scott Barrett either. Knowing that there's someone in
the team who I think if we had a vote
to in, if we took a hundred texts or the
rugby public had a vote, I think most people would
say Artie Saves should be the captain. I don't think
they'll make a change. I would love to see Scott
Barrett dominate the Test match like he did against South

(30:36):
Africa the previous week at Eden Parker. I thought he
was tremendous that night and I thought that was going
to be the turning point for him. Unfortunately, the loss
in Wellington and what happened afterwards as well. I just
think we needed more from him afterwards as well. And
I know it's not as important as what you do
on the field, but I think we needed more from
Scott Barrett afterwards, you know, being as upset as we were. Again.

(31:02):
Part of his persona is that he doesn't ride the
highs too high or the lie too low. Very level guy,
and that is probably why he's done so well on
rugby at the elite level. But I would have liked
to have seen a bit more emotion from him on
the back end of the biggest defeat the All Blacks
have ever suffered.

Speaker 7 (31:19):
Ian.

Speaker 3 (31:20):
Thanks for chatting, mate, I appreciate it, Bryan says Jason.
The sadistic side of me would somehow enjoy seeing the
All Blacks lose the two games to Australia, just to
listen to the meltdown on your show. I don't believe
it will happen, but it could. Yeah, I'll move, I'll
move to the to the next one. A lot of

(31:40):
people asking about Otago. We are going to cover Otago,
don't worry, we are going to cover Otago's one in
the Ramhilly Shield. Going to do it after one o'clock
when a chat actually to their head coach, how was
their night, who looked after it and how do they
plan to keep it in a year where it just
seems to be changing hands every week. Grant, please hold

(32:02):
mate with you. After the Spere line, we're talking rugby
till one oh eight hundred eighty ten.

Speaker 1 (32:05):
Eighty The Tough Questions Off the Turf Weekend Sport with
Jason Kine and GJ. Gunnerholmes, New Zealand's most trusted home
builder News.

Speaker 3 (32:14):
Talk twelve forty five. Don't Panic twelve forty five. Luke
says probably have more nerves going into this week than
going into South Africa at Eden Park two weeks ago.
I still think we'll respond though, and lock Le Burislow
back up Lester to start at center, although Wacuto shows
how to keep him quiet last night and Roy Guard
back starting. Thank you, Luke, Max is made. I'm so

(32:37):
happy for those Otago boys. Yesterday was one of the
great Shield games. These upstarts have been phenomenal. Dylan Pledger,
Lucas Casey, a star is born. Max. That Lucas Casey,
My god, did you see those trace he scored? Unreal?
I'll ask him Mark Brown the coach about him and
other things after one. Hello Grant, thank you for holding Yeah.

Speaker 14 (33:00):
If any previous screps was right, even I couldn't get
through last weekend and Andy was saying was the busiest
he's ever known.

Speaker 3 (33:08):
It was a busy old weekend I expect next weekend
to be just as busy, Grant, but good to jet
to you on are slightly quieter Sunday.

Speaker 14 (33:16):
Yeah, yeah, I thought I've got to I've got to
get through this stock anyway, a couple of things. Selection
and I don't even know who the other two selectors
are on the three Many battle, but obviously Raiser has
the final say, and.

Speaker 3 (33:32):
I can tell Grant, Jason Ryan and Scott Hanson the
three of them select the team.

Speaker 14 (33:37):
Okay, yeah, well they all have to take a bit
of the bin. But I said Razor, obviously we'd have
the final say. It's his disagreement, and that is tupou
Vai had been playing fantastically at blindside flanker Holland debuing
had been playing fantastically is Locke, So what if Raza
do He puts tupou Vai back to Locke and puts

(34:00):
Holland on the bench.

Speaker 3 (34:02):
I thought that was an unusual decision as well. They
stuck obviously with what worked in Auckland, because you'll remember
that went back to Locke in Auckland. Simon Parker came in.
I think they're massive fans of Simon Parker. But having
said that grant like you. When they played too Porva
at blindside in four of the first five Test matches

(34:23):
of the year, I thought that meant they were all
in on him. I thought that meant that he was
going to wear six against South Africa. And I thought,
Fabian Holand you're right, had what he played the first
five test matches? He started the first five tests, didn't he?
And I thought was very good?

Speaker 7 (34:39):
Yeah?

Speaker 14 (34:39):
Yeah, And Parker, you know, he's okay, but to my mind,
he's for the type of game. Well raise, they keep
saying the fast game and then they do box kicking
all the time, and anyway, you know, he pears a
bit too slow and that for the type of game
that they want to play. Good player, but anyway, we'll

(35:01):
see how they go with that selection.

Speaker 11 (35:04):
And yeah, I mentioned you've mentioned it.

Speaker 14 (35:07):
Have you ever talked to anyone who actually thinks that
the box kicking is a good idea?

Speaker 7 (35:14):
No?

Speaker 3 (35:14):
I haven't, No, I haven't, And in fact, I've spoken
to more people who just detest it, if I'm honest
with including Wayne Smith. I think he was a passionate
opponent of the box kick. They clearly do it for
a reason, mate, Otherwise they wouldn't do it. They clearly

(35:35):
do it for a reason. They believe that contestable ball
is a better option than trying to either bash it
out or run it out from their own twenty two
or inside their own half. They never box kick in
the opposition half obviously, But yeah, I can only presume
that the science behind the strategy is sound, otherwise they

(35:56):
wouldn't do it.

Speaker 14 (35:57):
Well, yeah, well, how I would disagree with that is
when the half back. I mean, obviously, if you're hard
on the fence on your goal liner in your twenty two, sure,
any topic kick you need to kick it out, at
least it's the last minutes and you need to try.
But okay, when the box kicking comes from either the
rucks or the scrub. Now, to do a box kick,
the halfback has to have the ball in his hands,

(36:19):
so he's got one hundred percent possession. Besides, got one
hundred percent possession, do a box kick, you've only got
a fifty to fifty chance to get the ball back.
Can't work out the mass?

Speaker 3 (36:29):
No, you, no, and no. The maths are sound, and
the only bit does not sound grant is that we're
not winning fifty percent of them. I spoke about this
last week with Jason. Ryan said, if it's fifty fifty,
then why are we winning fifty percent of them? Because
we aren't. So look again, I think the tactics I
hope anyway, will be different against Australia. I hope we
see less kicking from the you know, from the base

(36:52):
next weekend. I guess we'll wait and see. Thanks for chatting, grunt,
good to have you come through. Well, we maybe will
chat next weekend, although I get the feeling will be
busy again. But as much chance as anybody you're getting through.
Always enjoy chatting. And he says, I'm not so sure
about Eden Park. This is where we'll see Joe Schmidt's
blueprints on this Wallaby side. So yes, the All Blacks
perhaps will win, but it'll do nothing to mask the

(37:14):
bigger problem with the team. But how good yet? All
over the show is the NPC. My team wins the Shield,
says Andy, then concede nearly one hundred and eighty points
in three weeks. You gotta love it. I do love
the Shield, I must say. I got home from work
yesterday and sat down and watched that Shield match Canterbury
Otago and I just thought Cannabury might just buck the

(37:36):
trend of twenty twenty five. It might just be that. Yes,
it's been shared around. Yes, Tatanuki gave it to Whyite
cut or White Cuttle, gave it to Southland. Southland gave
it to Canterbury and Tasman almost won out last weekend.
But I thought, nah, that's a Cannabury will win it.
They'll lock it up. That's just what they do in
Red and Black Country. And they were fifteen points ahead
with twenty minutes to go. But Otago incredible that Lucas Casey.

(38:01):
I wasn't aware of that cat. I haven't watched enough
of Otago to have for him to sort of rotated
into my orbit. But those two tries he got, the
second one, just see him step the fallback. It's running
like a center. Chris says Ponty. I'd love to see
the Bleedersloe Cup go back to the old way the
last game of the series, where ever that game is held. Yeah,

(38:22):
the three game Bledislow Cup series. Chris, you know that.
When was the last time we had three Bledisloe Cup tests.
I know it's a clogged calendar, but you have to
go back a whil, don't you, Paul, says Ponty. Due
to the bad weather they're currently hitting New Zealand. I'd
say it'd be fitting to call the NPC off now

(38:42):
for the season and give the Mighty Otago the Ranfury
Shield for the summer. I've only got one more challenge
and you'd have to think they'll be all right against
North Harbor. But who would bet against North Harbor taking
it off Otago and Duneda next week given what has
happened already this season, and then if North Harbor win it,

(39:03):
then Southland go to Albany. So Southland good when it's
back Jason, great game yesterday, Otago over the Evil Empire,
Canterbury the shield back home. Look for a big future
for Lucas Casey. Did you see us trist Yeah? I
liked it, and Bringa says don't forget Piney. The under
eighty five kilogram final is the curtain raiser for the

(39:25):
Bledisloe Test next week. Go the mighty old Boys light
Bears from christ Church into their third final in a row. Brendan,
I know who you're playing as well. You are playing Pornicky,
coached by Ross Bond. He's part of the coaching group anyway.
I don't if he's the actual head coach, but he's involved.
I got a text from Ross bond last night saying
I'll see you at Auckland. Where's a Wizards text? I'm

(39:49):
just going to bring it up here because he was
He wasn't gloating necessarily. Another day trip to the Land
of Sales, he said, said BONDI we were thirty three
seven ahead at halftime. See you at Eden Park next Saturday.
I will see you a and Park next Saturday, Bondie
and hopefully you as well. Brandan with the old Boys,

(40:10):
Light Bears and the Ponnickey side doing battle for the
Under eighty five Cup for the year. Seven and a
half to one, New Stalks, b.

Speaker 1 (40:18):
Let's scoop from the trag fields and the court on
your home of thought.

Speaker 2 (40:22):
We again Sport. Where's Jason vine Us talks NB.

Speaker 3 (40:26):
Four and a half to one. Brendan says on text
follow up, tell Bondie he's got no chance. Brendan. You
like Bondie. I think you and he would get on
very well. I hope you get the chance to chat
to one another after the game next week. Rich's afternoon finding.
Nothing makes me more happy than seeing the Ranfurly Shield
taken off those one eyed Cannery supporters and it coming

(40:46):
to Otago. Thanks Rich. After one, we are going to
check in with the Otago team after that utterly magnificent
shield challenge yesterday. And I think I've said it across
the year, it's obvious just how much it means to
these players. All of the teams who have won it
have just been utterly jubilant at the final whistle. White Cuttle, Southland,

(41:11):
Canterbury and now Otago just love the ram Philly Shield.
Mark Brown is their head coach. He's with us after one,
but first up, after the one o'clock news, we're going
to get inside the Silver Ferns camp. Utterly tumultuous time
for the Silver Ferns with the standing down of their
coach Dave Noling Todoua. How have they managed to navigate
that and get ready for tonight's first tiny Jamison game.

(41:34):
Grace Wiki After one.

Speaker 1 (41:37):
It's the only place to discuss the biggest sports issues
on and after fields.

Speaker 2 (41:42):
It's all on We James Ford.

Speaker 1 (41:44):
With Jason Bade on your Home of Sport Used Talks.

Speaker 3 (41:50):
One O seven Ran Philly Shield Country is Dunedin. Now
I'm going to get you inside the Otago camp in
the next fifteen to twenty minutes or so with head
coach of the side, Mark Brown. I had to pointed
out to me that the log Awood has now had
seven different holders since Tasmen won it off Hawke's Bay

(42:14):
on the seventh of September last year. So was that
a year and two weeks seven different holders and all
four South Island NPC teams have now held it during
that time. Wonder how they're filling in Otago Country. Mark Brown.
This hour James mconey in his regular slot, also got
to remind you about the sky fan Zone next Saturday

(42:38):
on the Kennard's Outer Oval at Eden Park. The All
Blacks bringing you this for the first time ever. They're
going to open up a fan zone to ticket holders,
So if you've got a ticket to the game, you
can go to the fan zone from one forty five
member kick off is five past five, food trucks, bars,
interactive fun, plenty of live music, home growing headline acts.

(43:00):
DJ Clint Roberts, He's a top man. Ali Monorie Kings
bringing the energy. But you must have a ticket to
the game. So if you want to start your day early,
one five is when you can get to the outer
oval of Leading Park and get amongst it. Now we're
going to be broadcasting from there, I'm told, not told,
I know we are from three o'clock. Don't let that

(43:22):
put you off, though it should still come if you
want to. You don't have to come anywhere near us.
I don't know where they're going to put us, probably
off to one side. But if you want to come
and say age day, we'd love to chat to you.
The show next weekend next Saturday, twelve to three the
Kingslander on New North Road three till five, the sky
fan Zone on the outer Oval and then commentary from

(43:44):
five o'clock with Elliot Smith and Antstorn. What a Saturday anyway?
As I say, only available the fan zone to ticket holders.
We have this afternoon two tickets to give away double pass.
As I've said a few times over the weekend, we
can't get you to Auckland. You have to find your
own way there. But if you can get there, then

(44:06):
flick us a text with the word bled us slow,
Just led us slow and spell it correctly. Incorrect spellings
don't make it through what they do, but not to
the right place. So if you need to check out
a Spellett before you send it off, do that text.
The word led us slow to nine two ninety two.
We're going to draw out one of this afternoon for
the double pass to the game and also an opportunity

(44:28):
to join us in the sky fan zone next Saturday.
Let's shift our attention to netball on the court thankfully.
The tiny Jamison Netpul series starts tonight in Auckland. The
Silver Ferns up against South Africa in a three game series.
Game one event find a Stadium, sent a pass tonight
at seven forty. Game two in Napier Wednesday night, same time,

(44:51):
then in for cargol next Sunday evening again at seven forty.
Silver Fern shooter and one of a four strong leadership group,
Grace Weket is with us. Grace, let's address the elephant
in the room to start with challenging of time? Has
this been with Dame Noling Todua being stood down as

(45:12):
your head coach?

Speaker 15 (45:13):
Yeah, it's been very challenging. I think the words that
I've been using a lot the past few weeks has
been unprecedented that's obviously a challenge and it's uncharted orders
for only myself, but the entire staff and Niplonne's Villain
and the whole playing group. So we've really had to
compartmentalize and take things one day at a time and

(45:35):
focus from latask your hands, which is taking this sery
through it.

Speaker 3 (45:39):
How was this explained to the players.

Speaker 15 (45:42):
There's a lot of conversations that we've had with then
the playing group, communications from the Players Association along with
Bonnie Villains and I guess some player for them to
do more than others, but a lot of the team
messaging has been about Bonne Villain and the staffing group,

(46:03):
you know, as you mentioned in the media earlier, still
being a negotiation and trying to come to a resolution
and untold here able to you know, thought out their
quote unquote discute. No, he's not able to come into
the training environment and obviously they've got to complete with me.
And I'm sure more context than that, but yeah, that's

(46:24):
pretty much a crux of it, and for us, as
you know, in ways daring and it has been we've
had to really just band together and be able to
put down and say what we need to but come
together to playing group to get the job done.

Speaker 3 (46:37):
How how was How is your relationship with Dane Nolan?

Speaker 1 (46:41):
Yeah?

Speaker 15 (46:41):
I have the utmost to know. She's a fantastic person,
fantastic coach and the years that I've been coached her
icure very lucky to have been led by her and
to have learnt off her, and we do have a
strong relationship. So it's obviously challenging to you know, be
in this space without her. I've never been in the
friends right Nold as my coach. So yeah, like I said,

(47:03):
we are unprecedented and obviously I think at the core
or there's you know, people who love playing net for
who want to be a part of netball and contrary
to the black streety is this environment and so I
guess for them to have turned in the way they
have is really challenging to you know, see the game
and the team and the people you care about, I

(47:24):
guess in the situation. So just navigating that as it comes.

Speaker 3 (47:29):
Yeah, is there a difference of opinion within the playing
group about this?

Speaker 15 (47:34):
I won't say show. I think what we have shared
you on and knowing that there's a job at hand
and then to get that done and there hasn't been
that much opportunity for us to speculate or to you know,
add to rumor for us what we've been, what's been
shaved of us, but enough for us to have a

(47:56):
united I guess point of view and going forward and
being united with one of our team values. And so
that's really guided us in terms of getting around all
the players in the group and ensuring that the people
you can't have in this face experiencing a typical sil
of friends environment as as standard as it can be

(48:16):
given the circumstances, but having a positive experience is have
as much confidence in their abilities and training under their
about to perform. And that's kind of a shady bee
we have this playing group.

Speaker 3 (48:26):
Do you think she'll come back?

Speaker 9 (48:29):
I can't say.

Speaker 15 (48:30):
I the messaging has been that that kind of fits.
It's about my pay grade this she'll come back, and
I'm not sure that's much that we can do about that.

Speaker 11 (48:41):
I would love to.

Speaker 15 (48:42):
See Nol's back, and that's obviously a challenging situation, but
whether she'll come back or not, I'm not sure.

Speaker 3 (48:49):
So how have you put this order one side and
prepared for three test matches to come against South Africa?

Speaker 15 (48:57):
Yeah, it's not been easy, and it's massive kudos to
the playing group and the staff and support systems that
we have around us to be given us face space
to express how we're feeling and be candid and be
open about how challenging this situation has been and to

(49:17):
have that time and then be able to reset, and
I foss has been that ability to compartmentalize and put
that to a side given that we have a job
to do. We have some great coaches who have come
in to support this group, who have you known a
lot to be here to guide us, and we're very
grateful to Event and Leanna for taking one.

Speaker 16 (49:38):
Opportunity to.

Speaker 15 (49:40):
Take control of this team in the meantime and they've
been fantastic and understanding the delicacy of the situation and
wanting us to, you know, steel how you want a feel,
but also with the understand that we have to perform.

Speaker 3 (49:57):
Yeah, that word compartmentalized is a great one, I'd imagine.
I don't know, but you must just be looking forward
to getting out there and playing netball, are you.

Speaker 7 (50:04):
Yeah?

Speaker 15 (50:04):
Absolutely, I think at the end of the day, that's
why we're all here. It's what we love doing. And
you know us players don't really want to get inso
much of the politics, probably just want to throw it
up and get out there. So that is the exciting part.
And it's been you know, a long time coming for me,
having been out for a wee while, and also for
a lot of these Gibby contents there, it's their first

(50:27):
time in this space and it's special and it's a privilege.
And so just to be able to take court as
a group.

Speaker 3 (50:33):
I look at the shooters and no Amelia Ranny Canasio,
no Maa Wilson, Tiana Maturo, Amelia Warmsley's not on this team,
she's playing age group stuff. So the other shooters Martina Salmon,
Georgia Heaven and fielder Vui. How much more of a
leadership role will you play with less experience there in
the shooting circle.

Speaker 15 (50:52):
Yeah, I definitely It's not lost on me the experience
in our group and the shooters and the gaps that
there are. But I see those gaps in experience a
huge opportunity for growth, not only for both players. That
for myself excited by the opportunity to you know, keeping
that leaderships grace more. And I really believe that my
job hasn't changed. I think I can lead by just

(51:15):
shooting well and being available and using my voice, and
so it's really exciting for this group and to have
new blood and fresh faces who are hungry and eager,
and for me individual excited to see how they shift
and what we're able to do. It's just really really
fantastic players, so much to give and amazing combinations. So
seeing them I training the fleet has been fantastic And

(51:37):
I can't like to see all the girls take court
and you.

Speaker 3 (51:40):
Karen Berger, Kelly Jackson, and Kate hefferen and are all
co captains, So how will that work? How has that
been working this week?

Speaker 15 (51:49):
Yeah, it's been fantastic. I think being able to lean
on each other, especially players being across different parts of
the court and having different levels of captives experience has
been great for me intensive learning off them and understanding
what kind of captain I want to be and where
I see my are flitting, and but also just sharing
that load of leadership, especially given the current space of

(52:12):
the team at the moment, So just being able to
share the pressure and share, lean on each other a
bit more and be a lot for one person's take.

Speaker 17 (52:20):
At the moment.

Speaker 15 (52:21):
So I think it's fantastic to have three others around
me and like wise me be able to support the
others in all parts of the job.

Speaker 3 (52:29):
And it's been a while since the Silver Ferns have
played South Africa, so have you managed to get a
gauge on the threats that they'll pose to you across
these three games?

Speaker 15 (52:37):
Yeah? Absolutely, spend a lot of time in camp, you know,
studying video and looking at what we're coming up against
and preparing the game plans and the like, and it's
exciting abortunity. They're a very strong side, very athletic, they
have a lot of firepower and both ends of the
court lots of hungry up and coming players. So it's
a really good opportunity to test ourselves against them and

(53:01):
really see where we're at in national basnight. It's been
a long time since you've played them, and yeah, there's
an an element of unknown, but I guess it's exciting
for us to really see the measure up.

Speaker 3 (53:10):
And of course your presence here as a result of
the change in eligibility rules and I know that's now
sort of done and dusted, and thank goodness that that
it's finally come to fruition. But when you reflect back
on that time now, Grace, how do you reflect upon it?

Speaker 15 (53:27):
Yeah, it was a bit of a real wind. I
guess it's time last share, knowing that I would be
able to see out there international season, but that would
be the end of it for who ever knows. When
it was hard to think about the future and what
that could look like to me and didn't know when
I'd be able to put the drifts back on again.
So I think the fast forwards now and be in
this place as I am very grateful for and the

(53:48):
way that the starts have aligned, and not only for myself,
with the other players who are also able to take
on the opportunity to play overseas. I think it's fantastic
and I've been saying that I do believe it could
win when and I really do mean that, both for
the players who are able to challenge themselves and grow
at individuals with all, both for the game in New
Zealand and the opportunity that it opens up for pathways

(54:12):
to younger players and opportunities to get up an aim dispremiership.
So it's exciting and I'd be very grateful to be
back here in the team that I love, with the
girls that I've grown up from, a hit fullworth and
I'm just so happy to be taking court worth.

Speaker 3 (54:25):
It'd be great to be talking about some nepple on
the court. Grace, thanks for taking the time. All the
best in this three game series against South Africa.

Speaker 15 (54:33):
Yeah, thank you so much.

Speaker 3 (54:33):
No, thank you, Grace. Grace wiki there out of the
Silver Ferns seven forty Tonight, seven forty Wednesday, seven forty
next Sunday. All those games incidentally are live on Gold
Sport and iHeartRadio, so you can tune in and hear
what happens on the court. Look, I mean clearly, this
has been hugely disruptive to the players and I'd imagine
there would be divided opinion in the team over this

(54:56):
has to be and there's no clarity that beyond this series.
The Silver Ferns, after this three game series against South Africa,
played the Constellation Cup four Tests against Australia next month
to home to away. Is Dame Nolinge Toto. We're going
to be back for those games. If not, what happens.
The reason she's not there for these games is because

(55:18):
of this ongoing investigation and the fact that as I
understand it. Anyway, these issues, whatever they were, were raised
a long time ago and it's only now only now
that they have seen fit to open this investigation. And
that's got so close to this tiny Jerson series that

(55:39):
they've had to bring an Evon Yvette rather McCausland jury
to be coach. And she said, look after the third game,
I'm going back.

Speaker 11 (55:48):
To my job.

Speaker 3 (55:49):
I'm going back to my teaching job. So she doesn't
want the job full time. It's just a mess, isn't
it just an absolute mess?

Speaker 14 (55:59):
Look?

Speaker 3 (55:59):
New Zealandship beat South Africa. We're a better netball team
than they are. And thankfully we're going to talk about
some on court stuff. But you don't envy the play
a group in all of this. And what about netball fans?
Text here, Gray says she doesn't want to get into
the politics of it. That's great, but this is all
the sport has become now own goal after own goal, eligibility,

(56:20):
TV deals, alleged player revolts, zero transparency. Explain all of
that to a ten year old fan. It's a very
good point. And at some point you have to look
at the board and at the CEO, who I must
say has been spectacularly absent while this is all played out.

(56:42):
I get the fact that people take leave, but when
the sport is at crisis point, the most tumultuous time
in its history, you call that off. You at least
provide visibility. Jenny Wiley hasn't done that good a bevan.

Speaker 9 (57:03):
Okyonny, you just took the word straight out of my
it's just saying Andy she it's a disgrace. She has
to I don't know what's going on. When Ray I
heard him last week, he was trying to like he
was like trying to skate around the issues. You wouldn't
give a straight answer. It's just it's disgraceful. When she
pulled New Zealand netball teams out of the Angel, you know,

(57:24):
the championship in Australia and then and decided, you know,
we're going to go at our own. Then everybody's leaving
and then now this what is going on. If this
happened in Australia, they'd be like they'd be you know,
there's been outcry.

Speaker 3 (57:39):
Oh one hundred percent of them, and I think that
has to happen now. There has to be an examination
of the leadership or lack of during this time, not
just for this, but there was the like I say,
the TV deal is another one, as you say, the
going back, the the pulling out of the of the
much stronger transcasment competition, the whole eligibility thing, which thankfully

(58:01):
was sorted, but it seemed to take an inordinate amount
of time to get sorted. It just has been a
really forgettable time.

Speaker 9 (58:10):
And do you remember that in our coach it's got
to be an investigation.

Speaker 3 (58:22):
I do, I do, yes, I remember that that. Well,
is it Jeff TV? I can't remember that somebody?

Speaker 9 (58:27):
Yeah, but I an investigation. He was so he was
so curious about I think I don't know what it was,
some bunker thing, but yeah, look, I mean what's going on.
I have no idea. It's just disgraceful. And I think
that personally myself, if I was Noline, I would I
would just come out, well, I know she's probably doing

(58:50):
the right thing. But if I was here, I wouldn't
go back to them. I just said, look, I've had
enough you guys treated me this way.

Speaker 3 (58:56):
Yeah, And I think she's probably you know, her number
will be in the in the phone of of other
netball franchises around the world, both domestic and international. What
Dame Nolen as their coach?

Speaker 9 (59:08):
Yeah, exactly, And I think that they're going to be
vulnerable too, like they've set themselves up South Africa are
probably going to become an unlight sharks at the water
sniff and blood and how much is that gonna compound?
You know, if they lose and and comprehensively, it's all
going to be about what's happened with Nolan and it's

(59:29):
just it's just such to set themselves up for such
a failure. I hope they don't, but that's they've done it.
They've they've cut off their noses despite their faces.

Speaker 3 (59:39):
Good man, bevn good points, well made, as always buy
you thanks mate. The playing group caused the mess? Stop harping,
pinety harping. I don't know what that means. What am
I harping about the playing group? Great of the mess?
I guess what you mean is that I was giving
sympathy to the playing group. I don't know whether the
entire blame group has caused the situation. I'm reasonably sure

(01:00:01):
it wasn't a universal player revolt against Dame Nolen. I
think those in the team like Grace Wicki, who knows
only a silver fern's environment with Dan Nolin as her coach,
will be unsettled by this and probably have to choose
their words carefully. But I thought Grace wiki was quite open. Actually,
she's become a pretty good spokesperson for Neple.

Speaker 2 (01:00:24):
Schari.

Speaker 9 (01:00:24):
Hi, Hello.

Speaker 5 (01:00:28):
I'm a volunteer who goes to who's been going to
Nepple for a very very long time, and I go
there to coach kids to help out any way I can,
and I just think of those kids coming through. I mean,
how do you explain that to a group of kids
of what I think that I find. I find Netble,
New Zealand it's absolutely disgusting what's happened I found. I

(01:00:51):
also think that they have done a disservice to Dame
Nole in Totoa and her mother. I'm sorry, but they have.
And I just sit back and think, if you don't
understand our sport to us who are out there, if
every weekend and that rain whatever, then don't be on
the board, Get off the board and don't be there

(01:01:13):
because this is a shambles. This should never have happened.
And you know I said here and I saw it
on CNN News or how the hell did it get
on there? And I'm like wow, And that's how important
that lady is recognized around the world. And we have
done a disservice to her. Netble New Zealand has done

(01:01:34):
a disservice to her. They have done a disservice to
our Netble community. And they need to front up and
they need to get this sorted. We lose her she goes,
it is their fault and so should all their jobs.
And that's how I feel. I am so strong about it.

Speaker 3 (01:01:51):
I'm pleased you've rungxury, You've articulated yourself brilliantly and clearly.
Your heart's in the game. If you volunteer for the
game and have done for many years and you see
the good that the sport does at the grassroots level,
then your right to feel that way, right to feel
that way. The thing is about a ten year old
fan of netple. They want to come along and wash

(01:02:12):
the silver ferns. They don't really, you know, grasp what's
happened here. Some of them will probably you know, turn
up and ask where Dame nor Lena is. It's actually
a good question Riccardo.

Speaker 17 (01:02:25):
Hello, are you making here me?

Speaker 14 (01:02:28):
Aka?

Speaker 3 (01:02:29):
I can Are you backing your truck?

Speaker 10 (01:02:32):
Yeah?

Speaker 17 (01:02:32):
I am actually yeah, yeah, yeah, hey, I know embarrassing
hey yeah no no, no, no name nor Leans. Such
as the goodwill that she's she has provided for New
Zealand over the X amount of years, her reputation, her
manna and whatnot. It's it's like overnight New Zealand Netble

(01:02:56):
has tried to tarnish it. It's it's it's very difficult
for her to come back, to be quite honest, in
terms of how she's been treated. I really feel sorry
for the up and comers, for the for the girl
that are coming through the system and having to you know,
obviously hear about these sort of things through social media,
through the news outlets and whatnot. It doesn't do anything

(01:03:16):
for the game other than destroy the up and comers
that are coming through.

Speaker 12 (01:03:20):
I was at the.

Speaker 17 (01:03:22):
The Auckland Finals Championship Finals, and I watched Howick Howard
Girls or Howard College versus Mags an unbelievable spectacle and
the and the and the amount of talent in that
and on that court was amazing, and I just feel like,
hopefully they've got a pathway forward. But they need to
sort out there the like you said, the board, whoever's

(01:03:43):
the CEO of New Zealand Network, it's gone a well,
you know, why isn't that person taking ownership and confronting
what's going on? Everyone just said is just sort of
kept in limbo in terms of what's going on here.
And for me, I'd rather be just come out straight
away and just say, look, see SE's brogering off, you know,

(01:04:03):
and and the egg and their face for the New Zealand,
for borderom and whatnot. Because they've treated her really unfairly.

Speaker 3 (01:04:10):
No one would blame her Ricardo if she did. No
one would blame her if she did. Even if they
come to the end of this investigation whatever that means
and say okay, hey, Dame Nolean, you've been cleared, come
back in. It should be quite within her rights to say,
you know what, I've had another think about this and
and now I'm gonna I'm going to do something else.

Speaker 17 (01:04:30):
Hundred percent because we left the number as well as
you know, you know, the public, we don't know what's
going on, and we really feel for it because she's
got a lot of manner she may not have got
the results in terms of Australia, but you know we were,
we were right on the cusp for of getting the
systems right. It reminds me of sort of when they
say driving Cleary. I don't know whether I know the
analogy of obviously comparing it to the Warriors, you know,

(01:04:53):
and then in local tem to the Warriors. They haven't
made a Grand Final since, you know, so she was
on a good thing, Dame Nolen and then the fact
that they've actually destroyed it overnight. It's just yeah, it's
just disgusting in terms of how she's been treated.

Speaker 3 (01:05:07):
That'sel No, thanks Ricardo, I mean. And with Australia. We
beat Australia three tests to one last year. We won
three of the four Constellation Cup tests in October of
last year we won the first three. It was only
the fourth one when the series was sewn up then
Australia got one over US one thirty one. Thanks for

(01:05:28):
all your causing correspondence. We'll take a break, come back,
get you inside. The Otago rugby team ran Furley shield
holders their head coach Mark Brown after.

Speaker 1 (01:05:37):
This is the biggest seams in sports are on Weekend
Sport with Jason pain and GJ gubnomes New Zealand's most
trusted home builder.

Speaker 2 (01:05:46):
News Talks be News Talks.

Speaker 3 (01:05:48):
There one thirty three. What a year it's been for
the ran Furley Shield. Taranaki started twenty twenty five with
it fended off King Country, Thames Valley and Northland before
white Cuttal came to New Plymouth.

Speaker 18 (01:05:59):
Beg it comes Ti Kurn straying, he gets in it.
A judge maybe says that's all over. I Cano have
won the Ranfilly Shell.

Speaker 3 (01:06:10):
Their first defense was against Southland eight days later.

Speaker 18 (01:06:13):
There that's fots dead Southland epis that's going south.

Speaker 1 (01:06:21):
They have done the impossible, They have done the unthinkable.

Speaker 3 (01:06:26):
The Stags in turn put it up against Canterbury the
following weekend.

Speaker 19 (01:06:30):
Emphatic Channerbury have won the ran Philly Shield fifty four
points to fourteen. Channerbury win the Ranfilly Shield for the
seventeenth time for most of any province in the extraordinary
life of the Log of Wood, while Southern's equal the

(01:06:51):
record for the shortest tenure ever that is just six days.

Speaker 3 (01:06:56):
And Canary themselves very nearly lost at the following week
trailing Tasman after the final hooter numbers.

Speaker 9 (01:07:02):
To the lift.

Speaker 1 (01:07:04):
Canterbury on to the shell.

Speaker 6 (01:07:08):
George Bell writes his nighbor to Red Philly Shield folklore.
He flew it from Wellington for sporting and he scores
the bats winner in the eighty fourth minutes.

Speaker 3 (01:07:20):
But as that, as it turned out, that only extended
their tenure by one week.

Speaker 5 (01:07:25):
Back to Feller.

Speaker 18 (01:07:27):
Otago have done it.

Speaker 4 (01:07:30):
Otago they win the Red Philly Shield for the eighth
time of their history.

Speaker 3 (01:07:37):
Here's Nita ran Philly Shield headed forward Dunedin after Otago's
come from behind thirty eight thirty six win over Canterbury
in christ Church yesterday, up against a team that was
seven from seven and ahead by fifteen points with twenty
five minutes to go. The Logger waters now changed hands
four times this season, the first time that has happened
since nineteen fifty. Otago head coach is Mark Brown. How's

(01:07:59):
your night, mate?

Speaker 7 (01:08:01):
Yeah, it was a good night, thanks Fanny. We sat
at the ground for quite a while and then yeah
went back to the hotel starting to ge there just
yeah say at the moment.

Speaker 3 (01:08:11):
Really, I bet, I bet who looked after the shield
last night? Who was put in charge of it on
overnight duty.

Speaker 7 (01:08:17):
A massive responsibility, so we gave it to We got
it to Charles Elton who it's one of our sort
of more experienced members of the team. But he's not
actually any contract with squad. He's in his injured cover.
So very responsible man to have that have those duties.

Speaker 3 (01:08:33):
Excellent stuff. Has anyone in your team ever won? It
was anyone on the team when when you last had it, Well.

Speaker 7 (01:08:40):
You've got me there. I'm not too sure to be fair,
I know, Jonah, I think there's a couple potentially who
who have had a shield rang with Otaga.

Speaker 3 (01:08:49):
You of course were co coach of Canterbury for a
couple of seasons and involved in the team for a
long time. So was this bittersweet or was it extra
special for you?

Speaker 7 (01:08:59):
On reflection, that's probably a little bit just like sprinkles
on top. I suppose it's when the ski edge all
came out. It was always a game I was looking
forward to, but the fact that both teams have been
going well and it was sort of one versus too
on the table and then you had to have the
shield run then for good measure, that became a become

(01:09:19):
a pretty exciting fixture. And yeah, it was really just
focusing on the fixture itself, not the occasion or what
was going on and behind it. But yeah, I'm reflecting.
It is nice to do that, but yeah, I'm really
grateful and for my time at Kennerbury. So it's not
there's no bitter sweetness here, it's just it's always nice

(01:09:39):
to get one get one up on somewhere where you've
been previously.

Speaker 3 (01:09:43):
Absolutely, so, did you just try to keep your week
normal leading in or did you in some ways embrace
the fact that this was a special occasion?

Speaker 13 (01:09:54):
Good question.

Speaker 7 (01:09:54):
We we didn't hide from the fact that the shield
was up for grass, so we spoke about it earlier
in the week, but then just tried to keep things normal,
just said a normal week and treated it. Yeah, like
we had to be really well prepared because Canary were
going really good.

Speaker 11 (01:10:11):
They were a good side, so.

Speaker 7 (01:10:13):
We just said to look after ourselves and that was
the focus. Once we'd addressed the shield.

Speaker 3 (01:10:17):
Yea, were thirty six twenty one down with twenty five
minutes to go. What sort of messages were you sending
down at that point?

Speaker 7 (01:10:27):
It was a case of just really sticking to what
we were doing through glimpses throughout that game, we were
periods of play that, you know, when we held the
ball and sort of played the way we wanted, we
were creating opportunities and sometimes we took them, sometimes we
directed them away. So it was more we knew we
knew if we just got into our work that the

(01:10:49):
opportunities would be there. And I think the message at
halftime was just to try and win the collisions. Think
Canary were very good natural staff physically, we didn't make
a lot of headway and then when they were carrying,
we sort of gave them the game line. So it
was just a message at half time to go out
and win. Collision switched. The boys did really well, and yeah,
it was then it was just sticking to what we're

(01:11:11):
how we plan to play Canterbury and trusting that and
then when the opportunities come up, just for the boys
just to have a swing your man.

Speaker 3 (01:11:18):
Look as Casey goes, all right, doesn't he he's not bad?

Speaker 7 (01:11:22):
Yeah, yeah, he's Yeah, he's some talent. He's he was
club player of the Year down here and played a
couple of games last year for Tom Donneley, and he
was exceptional in the club season and it was pretty
evident pretty early that he was able to transfer what
he was doing at Club Rugby to this level. And

(01:11:44):
he's just keeps going to new heights, doesn't he.

Speaker 3 (01:11:48):
Yeah, secrets out, doesn't it. I mean, I don't know
how old would he be. He is he just a
kid or was he a bit older?

Speaker 10 (01:11:52):
Oh?

Speaker 7 (01:11:52):
You know, it's any young?

Speaker 3 (01:11:55):
Oh wow, okay, okay, so so yeah, so the next level,
I mean, without wanting to pump a young guy's ties
up too much, the next level is something you could
see him aspiring to.

Speaker 7 (01:12:03):
Oh absolutely, Yeah, he's just he's like he's athlete. He's
very skillful, but he's very explosive and that they will
take you a long way.

Speaker 3 (01:12:14):
So now you need to keep it. This year a
Sean had difficult that is North Harbor on Saturday afternoon.
Do you foresee any problems refocusing your boys, because if
you wouldn't that you keep it for the summer, right,
that's right?

Speaker 7 (01:12:25):
Yeah? Yeah, ordinarily you know it's coming off games like that,
it might be it might be a challenge, and these
games sort of take a little bit out of you,
not only physically but mentally. But we're just going to
have the front up because no disrespect to the shield.
But we've got Liam Coltman's one hundredth game this week,
so yeah too. There'll be no excuses not to not

(01:12:48):
to honor him with the.

Speaker 3 (01:12:50):
Performance and just to finish how worthy emotions in the
coaching box after the final whistle on our radio commentary,
our boys said that they could hear the windows being
bashed behind them. It was a bit of excitement, no doubt.

Speaker 7 (01:13:02):
Otherwise denying it was a personalities up there and the
responses once that ball got kicked out reflect toalities in
the box.

Speaker 3 (01:13:14):
Great to chat to you, Mark, congratulations made I think
yeah like for the neutral I mean, terrific game of
rugby and love love seeing the shield change hands. All
the best of the week ahead, mate, and for for
Liam Copman's hundredth and holding onto the shield. I appreciate the.

Speaker 11 (01:13:27):
Chat, thanks very much. Fine, appreciate it now good only mate.

Speaker 3 (01:13:29):
Thank you Mark, Mark Brown, their head coach of Otago
shield Holders. They put it on the line against North
Harbor this coming Saturday, so next weekend one o'clock. If
they win that they hold it for the summer. If
they were to give it up to North Harbor, North
Harbor would have one further challenge to negotiate against Southland
the following Friday, so it's quite possible and who would

(01:13:50):
bet against it given the year we've had that it
might change hands a couple more times otago though if
they beat North Harbor next Saturday, we'll hold it across
the summer months eighteen away from two. On the other
side of this Breakjames mccony and as regular Sunday Slot.

Speaker 2 (01:14:08):
Don't get caught offside weekends for Us with Jason Payne
and G J.

Speaker 1 (01:14:15):
Gunnerholmes, New Zealand's most trusted home builder news Dogs.

Speaker 3 (01:14:18):
V one five on Sundays, we catch up with James mcconey.
Lots to get through, mate, Can we start with Track
and Field gold for Jordy Beamish, gold for Hamish Kerr.

Speaker 11 (01:14:28):
Exactly incredible double and also that that finished by Jordy
Beamish will be replayed for many years to come in
every country in the world and even Fox Sports from
Australia just said, have a look at the Kiwi Jordy
Beamish and I think it was on ESPN, BBC World,
you know, like it's it's everywhere because it's a massive

(01:14:49):
moment and I mean you would have loved it as well,
pony right.

Speaker 3 (01:14:53):
Absolutely love love to and to run down the bloke
who's just basically dominated this event, the Moroccan Elba Carley,
to run him down in that fashion. Did you see
Albercali afterwards? He was so annoyed with himself, is punching
himself in the head.

Speaker 14 (01:15:08):
Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 11 (01:15:08):
And it was his first defeat in the major championship
since twenty nineteen.

Speaker 7 (01:15:12):
But this is the thing.

Speaker 11 (01:15:13):
The World Champs are huge, right, I know that the Olympics.
Everyone says that's the pinnacle, and it is. But you know, look,
golfers and tennis players get four majors each year. It's crazy, right,
So the athletes only get three every four years, right,
So they get the Olympics and they get these two
every two years. It's the World Champs. So this is
so massive that he's up there with, you know, in

(01:15:36):
the pantheon of greats, with Lovelock, Halbigs, now you know
Alison and Ordained, all the ones who have gone before
and won those big major world titles.

Speaker 7 (01:15:46):
He is right up there.

Speaker 11 (01:15:48):
The country kid from a Hawk's Bay f Arm.

Speaker 3 (01:15:51):
Just love the black singlet coming down the home straight
and middle distance, don't you. It's just something about it
just evoke so many memories. And then you've got Hams
Kerr who seems to have got the hang of this now.
You know, World champion, Olympic Champion, World indoor champion, Games champion.
He he might have another couple of big moments ahead
of him. Two thirty six his PB. I know he's

(01:16:13):
targeting two forty the word wreckers two forty five. Who knows.

Speaker 11 (01:16:17):
I know, and we all know as well, Poney, he's
going to take over from all of us in the media.
He has such a great interview Hamish care yep. But
the thing is he's he's we shouldn't be about his excellence, right,
So backing up their Olympic gold and now World champs,
we've actually got it's two of the biggest steals. I mean,
you think about the steeple chase is huge. I can

(01:16:39):
remember years when it would just be three African runners,
you know, sometimes three Kenyans in the medal position, so
Jordi b mission. Then you've got Hamish Cure, the black
singlet flying over like that. I mean you have to
go back in history really to find someone who's who's
done as well as him, he's doubled up. I think
Stoma from from Cuba is considered the goat, but there

(01:17:00):
were a few boycotts that got in the way of
his dominance. But let's see how far homous can go.

Speaker 3 (01:17:06):
Looking forward to that Maddy Wishie with a bronze in
the shop put overnight as well. More on the track
and field after two other black Ferns will play off
a third and fourth. You have to give credit to
Canada though, and that semi they were superb yesterday.

Speaker 11 (01:17:20):
Yeah, you can't blame anyone else. You have to blame
Canada if you know yourself. But reference, I applaud you great,
great movie by the way, like it might shock some
of our the listeners though, poney. But yeah, look, we
were missing our best player. Georgia Miller is already our
best player and she mainly plays seven. So that's part

(01:17:40):
of the issue I just wanted to talk about, which is, yeah,
we got ambushed by Canada, but they have specialists fifteens
players who excel and a great example of their halfback,
Justin Justin Pellettier, who was brilliant and you know she
plays in France, whereas our halfback Racy Pauty Laine, who's
still an outstanding player, is playing your trade in the

(01:18:01):
seventh circuit. So it's just not the same really, and
a lock like the Goodies kicking goals for Canada, I mean,
just a freak really and also committed to the fifteenth game.

Speaker 3 (01:18:13):
Yep, so Canada England in the final. That'll be an
interesting one to keep eyes on a week from now
to the All Blacks, who will gather today presumably to
prepare for next Saturday's first Bledislow Cup test. I enjoyed
seeing Cam Royguard back out on the field yesterday for Counties.

Speaker 10 (01:18:30):
I know.

Speaker 11 (01:18:30):
That's one of my favorite stories is cam Royguard who
actually played in the White Cuts, who played at Saint
Peter's College there and he was, you know, a star,
but he had to move to Counties. He played for
Orni Federal Club, which is out it's in the Whop
whops out towards Port White Cuts or in twenty nineteen
and you know, four years later he's at a World Cup.

(01:18:51):
Six years later, he's one of the best players in
the world. And you know, just watching him play for
the Steelers there just the class he's shown and you know,
Razor will be relieved to see that. But if you
put Hardy Savier and Will Jordan at the top of
the All Blacks tree, well, Roy Guard is right up
there too.

Speaker 3 (01:19:08):
Agree. I agree? Yeah, he and Cody Taylor for me
are the are the others who are in that sort
of that upper racial And yeah, just so pleased to
have to have camera re Guard back. Presumably they'll put
him straight back in the side. I'd imagine that that
would be the case. Hey, the Ranfurley Shield has has
taken up residents in Duned and we just had Mark
Brown on their coach. They'll be happy down and done
as you reckon. They'll hold on to it against North

(01:19:29):
Harbor or is there another another change of hands coming well?

Speaker 11 (01:19:33):
As Billy Armie Wakerson door do it and it to
Poky playing because I do remember a famous Harbor Shield
victory was that six I'm going back, yep. But look,
I think they can hold on, but they need to
hold on to Lucas Casey down there.

Speaker 3 (01:19:49):
The fame God what a player.

Speaker 11 (01:19:51):
What I mean, Raiser has got to get him in
the All Blacks as well, because I mean, I know
it's NBC, but it usually translates. You know you can.
Jonah was picked from the Condor sevens basically, you know,
like you can tell when someone is an absolute superstar.
And if he scored the try, he left the last
defender I don't want to say fullback because I'm not

(01:20:12):
sure it was the fullback, but left them standing like
a statue. Statue, bro you were just there standing while
Lucas Casey scored. Would have been a try and touch
rugby as well. Yeah, a flanker from Kerry carry up
North Kenny Kenny he is. He's a Northlander who's gone
down south.

Speaker 3 (01:20:30):
I think the Highlands will pick him up, won't they? Surely,
surely a good heart.

Speaker 11 (01:20:34):
Everybody will be fighting for his signature he is, I mean,
a star is born.

Speaker 16 (01:20:39):
Really.

Speaker 11 (01:20:40):
He did score an incredible try against Wellington, I think,
but scoring those two tries you won't see two bitter tries.
And of course we've been thropping on Oli Mathis and
Henry Pollock from England. But now Lucas Casey seems to
have raised the bar for Otago and it almost makes
because I'm a white cuttle guy. I remember Arthur Stone

(01:21:00):
scoring an incredible winning try and you know Wayne Smith
scored a great win against you guys and Wellington and
you know the list goes on, but that's up. There
was one of the greatest ran for the Shield winning
tries ever.

Speaker 3 (01:21:11):
Yep, loved it. Hi, quick word on the Sharks. They
beat the Riders. The Riders a week ago thought they
were through to the preliminary final. Now they're getting ready
for mad Monday.

Speaker 11 (01:21:20):
Yeah. And it's kind of funny because Ricky Stewart, you
gotta love him, but he's just one of those angry coaches.
He's sort of you can imagine smashing up the changer
and we're doing whatever. But hey, the Raiders where the
pace centers. But sometimes the cream just rises to the top.
So two things. One, as a kid, I was a
massive fan of Kevin Edle and his son Kal Edle

(01:21:40):
is playing in the centers for the Sharks and he
made a fifty meter run that set up a try beautifully,
even though the Aussie commentators kind of ignored it and
said it was a great cut move between the two halves.
I'm like, come on, mate, the Kiwi just ran well
son of a te we just ran fifty meters. Can
you Australians get on the on the page. But the

(01:22:03):
other thing that stood out was the banter of the
Sharks doing the Viking clap, which of course the Raiders
fans have adopted from the Iceland football fans. But they
did a full Viking clap in camera. So I applaud that.

Speaker 3 (01:22:16):
Applaud that too, and applaud you. Always love chatting James.
We'll do it again next week. James Macconi seven away

He's only a tenth away in the racing bulls as
ant nanny can't pit the racing balls of the Kiwi.
Maxmath Stafford up into eighth gear to the top and
porel position for Maxmath Stafford here in Baku.

Speaker 19 (01:28:52):
Liam Lawson water Dry of Lawton at Carnal's sight on
the Frondra.

Speaker 3 (01:28:57):
What a grid we've gone for tomorrow. It has been
eighteen thousand, eight hundred and eighty days since a New
Zealander last stood on a Formula one podium. That could
change as early as tomorrow morning, though, As Liam Lawson
qualified third for the Azerbaijean Grand Prix, more than fifty
one years on from Denny Hulm winning the Argentine Grand

(01:29:19):
Prix in nineteen seventy four, Lawson will start on the
second row at the Baku City Circuit as the best
qualifying result of his Formula one career so far. Those
are the opening few lines of the article we woke
to this morning on enzherld dot co dot enz, written
by motorsport expert and journalist Alex Powell. Alex, you call

(01:29:40):
it a chaotic qualifying session? Can you explain that to us?

Speaker 16 (01:29:46):
Afternoon? Piney you checks in the mail for reading that
intro out. I mean to be short. There were six
red flags through the three qualifying sessions, which is just
the most that there has ever been in a single
Formula one qualifying session. The previous record was five, which
had happened twice, but to go six sex drivers basically
hit the wall and ruined their own session and any

(01:30:07):
chance of qualifying something good as they can, and that
just left anyone who didn't hit the wall having to
sort of start stopping and going to try and get
their own laps in.

Speaker 3 (01:30:16):
How much then did that play into Liam Lawson's hands.

Speaker 16 (01:30:21):
It's a very interesting question because obviously that last session
Q three had both Charlote Clerk of Ferrari and Osco
Pastre hit the wall and trigger separate red flags. So
at that time there was suspecion that was going to
start raining and had started to drizzle, and what both
Liam Lawson and Isiser Cadjo's Teama had done was they
got him set an early lap and then the clerk

(01:30:41):
hit the wall red flag as the rain stud to fall,
and that basically meant had it kept raining, no one
will be able to better those times. Unfortunately or unfortunately,
rather while they were waiting for the red flag to clear,
the rain stopped and then so that was sort of like,
well will they be able to keep these times up?
And then what Lia laws Snatch did was he came
out and bettered that time anyway, So to say it's

(01:31:01):
down to the red flags would just be a complete fabrication.
This was all his merit.

Speaker 3 (01:31:05):
So, I mean, this is tremendous, isn't it. You know,
he's had a steadily improving season from what most of
us can see. This is this is terrific. Isn't it
to qualify third on the starting grid?

Speaker 16 (01:31:19):
Absolutely?

Speaker 2 (01:31:20):
It is.

Speaker 16 (01:31:20):
I mean it's his best result. It's racing balls, equal
best result after Yuki Sinoda did it in Brazil last year.
But as Liam Lawson will be the first one to
point out, you don't get any points for qualifying, you
don't get any points of practice. But the positive areas
that he has been rapid all weekend.

Speaker 3 (01:31:34):
Tell us about the track then and what Liam will
have to do to retain or even improve his grid position.
Are there lots of opportunities for others to pass him,
for for him to pass or what's the what's the
course like?

Speaker 16 (01:31:48):
So backer is a very interesting track. Sector is one.
So it's a traditional sort of street track, which means
you sort of think, okay, it's going to be tight
for me, narrow, there's not going to be too many
opportunities to pass Sector one and two would definitely like
that Sector one. There is a lot of sort of
ninety degree turns which you can't sort of take at
full toddle, and that's where a lot of guys ran
in trouble whading the woman getting those red flags. Sector

(01:32:09):
three though, is flat out you get the very long
back straight where you do have a lot of opportunity
to overpass, to overtake rather and I think promisingly for
Len Lawson, he was the quickest three sector three in
both of the Friday sessions. I haven't actually looked at
last night because I was just too wrapped up in
getting a story to get it, but there are definitely
good signs that he will be able to potentially move up. However,

(01:32:30):
he does have maxistappen in front of them, so whether
or not he'll be able to get around his former teammate,
I would be very doubtful, but there is definitely enough
there for him to have a very good result tonight.

Speaker 3 (01:32:41):
He hasn't raised Formula one on the circuit, but he
does have Formula two experience here, so I.

Speaker 16 (01:32:47):
Mean, funnily enough, has last with the tobacco back in
twenty twenty two he did get third. I think he
qualified a bit further down was able to pull off
some overtakes during that sort of sprint race. So yeah,
it's not a circuit where he's underprepared for anything like that.
He does have the experience on it, which I think
has already shown over the last couple of time.

Speaker 3 (01:33:07):
I guess when you look at at a grid in
Formula One at the moment, you expect to see the
McLaren's up there near the front, Lando Norris seventh, oscar
Ps three ninth on the grid. That doesn't really help Liam,
does it having the two fastest cars behind him.

Speaker 16 (01:33:23):
No, But I mean we've seen Lando Norris be quick
on the Friday and the little bit and the third
and final practice yesterday. But McLaren have sort of battled,
not just this week, you think to the last race
as well at Monza, trying to be able to be
fast on these sort of low downforce circuits where you
basically can just fly like and that's why we've seen
Maxistapa come into it with two pole positions in a row,

(01:33:45):
and of course the win at Monza, whether or not
the McLaren's will have the race pace to get around
enough traffic to overtake Lan Wilson. I wouldn't be too
surprised because they are just two very fast cars. But also,
let's not forget we've got Isaac Hatgar down in P
eight Sandwich between them. So I mean, if he can
play the team game the way Landwilson did for him
and Monaco, he should be able to at least, or

(01:34:07):
hope you be able to at least keep Piastre off
his back.

Speaker 3 (01:34:09):
We always looked, don't we, for Isaac Hadjar, because you
are continually telling me that we need to compare Liam
against his teammate. Others are as well, but some of
them not as astute as you. So how did Isaac go?
And you know, is it like? Is Lim a better
driver than Isaac Hadger?

Speaker 16 (01:34:27):
It's hard to say. Hagi didn't do too flashy. He
didn't so other than Q one last night, Limb has
been faster than Hadja all weekend. Whether or not that's
down to experience, Abaku, who knows Haji did complain about
the high winds during qualifying? Is Lim a better driver?
It's the window? Is such a such a small sample

(01:34:48):
SZ to compare and Haji does have the better results,
but whether or not that's down to the blow that
Limb's taken to his confidence after what's happened this year
or not, it's probably for him to say.

Speaker 3 (01:34:57):
Yuki sonodas had an unhappy time, hasn't he since he
took over the second Red Bull seat? But he had
a he's what six on the grid, that's a that's
a rare top team for him. They'd be reasonably happy.
What are Yuki Sonoda?

Speaker 16 (01:35:10):
Yuki Snow's actually had quite a weird season. So the
issues with being Max of Stappin's teammate over the last
couple of years we saw with Sergio Perez and i
mean two races with Liam Lawson was that they actually
qualified really poorly. The race pace was there. Yuki Snow's
being another way around. He doesn't actually qualify that badly.
He just goes backwards in the race. So whether or
not he is still six come the check and flag
tonight will be very interesting to see. But like we

(01:35:33):
saw at Monza, he went backwards and ended up tangling
with Lawson and sort of ruined.

Speaker 11 (01:35:36):
His own race.

Speaker 3 (01:35:38):
Question for you on text here, can Maxistappen still win
the driver's title.

Speaker 16 (01:35:42):
Mathematically, I'm sure he probably could have not done those sums. However,
I would be amazed if McLaren continued to have runs
like this where they're not consistently scoring at the front
of the grid to drop enough points that opened it
for the sappen. But you never know, this is motorsport.

Speaker 3 (01:35:57):
All right, back to Liam then to finish. If he
does in fact get on the podium, how should we
regard that achievement?

Speaker 16 (01:36:05):
Ah, I mean it would be fantastic for him. That's
you know, first and foremost. So I mean, in isolation
it's great, it's has best results until it's not. In
the year obviously gets a chance to better it. I
think if he can do it from where he is
now and hold p three or even improve, I think
it would be one of the sporting stories of the year,
just because of the context of what's gone into everything

(01:36:27):
that's happened to him this year.

Speaker 3 (01:36:29):
All right, well, well we will certainly be watching eleven
o'clock start tonight New Zealand time.

Speaker 19 (01:36:34):
Is that correct?

Speaker 7 (01:36:35):
Yeah?

Speaker 10 (01:36:35):
Early one?

Speaker 3 (01:36:38):
And how long is a race normally takes? I think
people want to push through, so how long will they
have to stay up for a couple of.

Speaker 16 (01:36:44):
Hours, about an hour and a half normally if there's
no red flags, iuch. I mean, there's no guarantee. We
might have seen them all last night. But if anyone
feels about heading the wall, I imagine that will delay
things a little bit, all.

Speaker 3 (01:36:54):
Right, manageable then manageable. I noticed that you were still
filing your stories at about half past two this morning,
so I appreciate you. You're getting up and having a
yarn to us. Look forward to reading your race analysis
on the Herald website and the paper in the next
twenty four hours of saying mate, thanks for your time.
Jes Bunny, all the best, Alex Pale read him at

(01:37:15):
Eleven o'clock tonight the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with Liam Lawson
starting from third on the grid. That is the highest
he's ever qualified. Max for Stappen and Carlos signs are
on the front row of the grid in red Bull
and William's respectively, Kimmy and Toonelli and the Mercedes alongside
Liam Lawson is fourth, then George Russell, Yuki Sonoda Lando Norris,

(01:37:37):
the first of the McLaren's Isaac Hadger, Liam Lawson's Racing Balls,
teammate Oscar Pastri and charl Leclair in the Ferrari making
up the top ten to twenty two man looking forward
to this eleven o'clock tonight, reckon we can get there
easy to twenty two. We'll take a break then come
back and talk some track and field. It's been a very,

(01:37:57):
very impressive campaign for New Zealand at the World Track
and Field Championships in Tokyo. We're fifth on the medal
table with a Cup Golds and a bronze overnight for
Maddi Weshi in the women's shotput. Sarah Cally Ross Gonna
break it all down for us when we come.

Speaker 1 (01:38:12):
Back The Voice of Sport on your Home of Sport
Weekend Sport with Jason Vane and GJ. Gunner Homes New
Zealand's most trusted home builder, News TALKSB.

Speaker 3 (01:38:23):
Weekend Sport on News TALKSB two twenty five. New Zealand
currently sitting a staggering fifth on the medal table at
the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Hamous Kerr with high
jump gold, Jordy Beamish with three thousand meter steeple chase
gold and Maddi Weshy with shot put bronze overnight. As
well as that, Tom Walsh was fourth in the men's

(01:38:43):
shotput with the season's best twenty one point nine to
four meters. There were three kiwi's Eliza McCartney, Olivia McTaggart
and Imogen Eiras in the women's pole vault final, with
Olivia mctaggett the best of them in eighth position. Zoey
Hobbes just missed the final of the women's one hundred
meters but finished with a ranking of twelfth in the world.

(01:39:04):
Tory Morby was seventh in the women's javelin final overnight,
and Connor Bell competes in the men's discus final tonight.
It's quite the list. Let's bring in twenty twelve Olympian
and two time Commonwealth Games hept athlete now broadcaster, writer
and track and field analyst Sarah Cally Ross Sarah three medals,
two gold, fifth on the medal table. Did you see

(01:39:25):
this coming?

Speaker 21 (01:39:27):
I didn't see as high off on the medal table,
that's for sure. It's been in an amazing wait for
track and field in New Zealand and I think Jordy Beamish,
you know that from the start out of the blocks
just set the tone really and the rest of the
team have all risen to the occasion.

Speaker 3 (01:39:46):
Let's go to Jordi Beamish. How much did you enjoy
seeing him win gold in the three thousand meter steeple
chase after falling and being trodden on and qualifying.

Speaker 21 (01:39:54):
I loved it so much because the thing about Jordy
he was in such good shape last year and so
to have not been in the form which he knew
he was in in Powis Mars was absolutely devastating. So
to see him come out and show the world what
he can do, and really the race fell into his

(01:40:15):
hands because it was so slow and progestrian, and as
every lap went went round it was like, wow, this
is being set up for Beamish. He is well known
for having the best CAC in the world and it
will have said it in the week no one will
beat him in that situation and it showed Alba Carley,
two time Olympic champion, two time World champion, he was

(01:40:36):
punching his face.

Speaker 3 (01:40:37):
He candn't disbelief. And Jordi Beamish won fifteen hundred meters
indoor World Championship gold last year. He couldn't do both
the fifteen hundred meters and the three thousand steeples? Could
he going forward well? And an Olympic Games for example.

Speaker 21 (01:40:53):
Well, the thing with Jordie is in twenty twenty three
he made the decision to go to steeples. He's actually
our national five thousand meter record holder. He's run thirteen
o nine outdoors, he's run faster indoors and he he
ran that last year. So he's got the ability at
five k and he's got the ability at fifteen hundred.

(01:41:15):
What he is very he's very smart and strategic and
he's done. He said, hey, look three thousand is the
sweet spot over the steeples.

Speaker 2 (01:41:26):
Let's go.

Speaker 21 (01:41:27):
And you know what that decision paid off. You know
in twenty twenty three he will finished fifth in the
World Championship final and then obviously has got the championship. Now,
I don't think people quite comprehend how much of a
stronghold the African continent has had on this event until
this key we bloke off the farm and Havelock North

(01:41:49):
has come and shown up the.

Speaker 3 (01:41:51):
World absolutely brilliant gold to for high Jumphemish Kerr equalling
as PB of two thirty six. Sir, he's talked about
clearing two forty, even chasing the world record of two
forty five, which has stood since nineteen ninety three. Is
that realistic?

Speaker 9 (01:42:05):
I think.

Speaker 21 (01:42:06):
I think the intermediate goal for me is the outright
area record because currently he holds that with Tim Forsyth
of Australia, so they both jointly hold that at two
meters thirty six, which was the same height he won
earlier in the week. So I think that's the next
milestone two forty. You know, when you get to those heights,

(01:42:29):
you only you can't see the bar height change that
much in terms of as you're visually sighting the bar
where you're like, wow, it's high. So I don't I
So to answer your question, yes, I think it's possible
for Hamish Okay.

Speaker 3 (01:42:45):
Having three New Zealanders in a World Championship final in
any event, it's pretty special. We had Eliza mccatt and
the Olivia mctaggett and Emmageneris all in the women's pole
vault final. How have we become so prominent in women's
pole vault?

Speaker 21 (01:43:00):
Well, I think we were very lucky in terms of
the early stage development of these three athletes, the facilities
that they were exposed to at such a young age,
and actually the talent transfer for a couple of them
are Tagget and Heiress from gymnastics. We found out about

(01:43:22):
Eliza in twenty sixteen with that incredible bonds, and I
think then that inspired this next generation which McTaggart and
Eras are in. Now we're seeing the fruits of that
environment coaching and also exposure of belief from your mates,
your training mates seeing them clear high bars. So that

(01:43:45):
is a phenomenal achievement and I think that they'll be
really happy with that. Obviously, just hugely devastating for Eliza
to have to retire, and she knows if she is
fit and healthy, she is well capable of taking these titles.
But I really hope that her body and her mind

(01:44:06):
plays ball in the years to come.

Speaker 3 (01:44:08):
Could any of the three of them contend for the
Olympic podium in la in twenty twenty eight.

Speaker 21 (01:44:13):
Well, the pole volt hasn't shifted so much in recent
years in the heights that generally win, So if you
are for eighty plus you are going to be right
in the mix, you know four ninety one the other night,
four ninety five at four ninety If you're at that
bar at in the right getting those heights on the

(01:44:34):
first attempt, you will be well in the mixer. So
mc taggart has probably had the best breakthrough season in
terms of winning the London Diamond League. Her personal best
now is for seventy three, so she will be looking
to make that next jump into the four eighties, which
we'll see her right in the mix come La.

Speaker 3 (01:44:54):
Just before we leave the pole vault, Swedish superstar Mondo
de plant has clared six thirty in Tokyo, his fourteenth
world record. Incredible. Can you put into context just how
special what he is doing is.

Speaker 21 (01:45:07):
He has taken the whole sport, not just pole vault,
but the sport of athletics to an extra level. And
what he is doing is elevating pole vault into hides
that people just never imagined. And what I love about
Mondo is that every time he's a showman, he but

(01:45:28):
he delivers. And for him to have that pressure on
him every time to go, oh, well, you know all
these people are showing up, the world is watching. You know,
probably he's going to jump a world record, but it's
actually so much harder than it just and then it
sounds like me just spouting that off what he is doing,
the speed he is running in with with this long pole,

(01:45:48):
having to accurately place it in the pot in the box,
and then basically you've got two pendulums happening, the pole
going round over the jumping box and then the mondo
going around the pole and six meters thirty. It is
so high and he's able to execute this and just

(01:46:10):
deliver it once again. You know, he's got a world
record bonus from World Athletics, but he's doing very well
from his other commercial endorsements as well. But it's great
to see because he's entertainer and he's delivering when it
counts toutally remarkable.

Speaker 3 (01:46:26):
You're very close with Zoe Hobbs. She missed the one
hundred meter final eleven one six in her heat, you
around eleven oh nine in her semi. Missing the finals,
I say, finishing twelfth in the world. How will Zoe
Hobbs be feeling about that?

Speaker 21 (01:46:40):
I think she's gutted, She's definitely gutted to not make
the final, but I think that she's really trying to
make that transition from semi finalists now into the final.
That's a really tough ass. You're talking about hundreds thousands
of a second where you need to execute. And I

(01:47:01):
know that her team have put an extra emphasis on
that semi final race in terms of the preparation they
put in this year to make that next jump.

Speaker 3 (01:47:11):
You know, twelve fast in the world.

Speaker 21 (01:47:13):
She's disappointed, but there's only eleven other women in the
world who are faster than her, and I think New
Zealand needs to.

Speaker 3 (01:47:19):
Really realize that and really realize what.

Speaker 21 (01:47:22):
A phenomenal athlete Zoe Hobbs is. Now hopefully she'll make
the next jump up and this campaign will have taught
her and her team so much. And I think we'll
see another version of Zoe come out in the next
four years as she builds to.

Speaker 3 (01:47:38):
LA can't wait. Maddie Wishy Olympic silver last year, now
World Championship bronze new PB of twenty four to zero
six meters. She's only twenty six. Dame Valerie Adams will
still winning gold medals in her thirties and Olympic bronze
when she was thirty six years old. What do you
predict for Maddi Wishy.

Speaker 21 (01:47:55):
Maddi Wishy delivers at major championships. Once again, she has
thrown an equal personal best in the heat of the moment,
and I just think that she is such a competitor,
and ever since she won her World Junior title and
that brilliant silver last year in Paris, you know she
is able to at a major championship, get physically prepared

(01:48:20):
to be able to do it, but mentally switch on
and you know she's got a long career ahead of
her if she wants it. And I think hats off
to her and her coach Matt Mike Schofield, because that
was a great competition. I think they're pretty gutted that
they didn't get the gold, but actually no one can
take away from the fact that she's a World Championship
bronze medalist.

Speaker 3 (01:48:40):
And just a word on Tory Morby as well. I
was at a function a couple of months ago and
I heard her speak and I was really impressed by
her seventh in the women's javelin Overnight didn't really get
close to her PB. Is seventh a good result for
her or will she be disappointed with that?

Speaker 21 (01:48:56):
It's a really good result for Tory. This is the
first time that she's made the Championship final and I
think that that for her in itself is another step forward.
I think the way that the competition works in terms
of the top ten getting another two throw, then top
eight and then top six. She's pretty gutted to not

(01:49:16):
get into that final top six, so she got bumped
in that last and that penultimate round. Yes, you need
to be throwing great distances in that final throw and
in the final, which we saw her her great throw
in qualifying. So I think overall, seventh is actually a
very good.

Speaker 3 (01:49:35):
Result for her. Always enjoy your terrific track and field analysis, Sarah.
Thanks so much for joining us this afternoon.

Speaker 21 (01:49:41):
Thanks Piney, and thanks to everyone who's tuned in and
support the kiwis in Tokyo this week. It's been awesome.

Speaker 3 (01:49:47):
It has been awesome. I've loved it. Thanks indeed, Sarah.
Sarah Caley Ross there with some great analysis on New
Zealand's performances at the World Track and Field Champs in Tokyo.
Want to go Connor Bell in the discus final tonight,
but regardless of how he goes, it will still be
among our most successful in fact by metals our most
successful world track and field champs go to Hamish Care

(01:50:07):
and Jordy Beamish and the bronze to Maddie Wishi. Looking
forward to seeing how they and many of our other
athletes go over the next little while. Commonwealth Games next
year of course, and then on towards the Olympics in
La in twenty twenty eight. Going to get your state
side shortly to talk American sport. Just updating you on
Bunning's ENDPC action North Harbor against Northland. Remember North Harbor

(01:50:29):
haven't won a game yet this season. They're o and seven.
They've got a Ranfurley Shield challenge next weekend. Now they're
leading Northland fourteen points to five at Albany after half
an hour, so who knows, maybe North Harbor will springboard
off their first one of the season into that ran
Furley Shield challenge next week after this state side with

(01:50:50):
the on Busby will also also get in touch with
our winner of the Bledisloe Cup double pass that to
come shortly to.

Speaker 1 (01:50:59):
The big issues on and after fields call oh eight
hundred eighty ten eighty weekends forward with Jason pain GJ
Gunner Homes New Zealand's lost trusted Home, milder news talks.

Speaker 3 (01:51:10):
At Baby coming up nineteen to three, take a stateside shortly,
lots of American sport to catch up on, but a
scandal in the NBA and the season hasn't even started yet.
The NFL and college football seasons underway, the Major League
Baseball playoffs coming up. Leon Buzby shortly on that. But
across the weekend we've been asking for entries for a
Bledisloe Cup double Pass, which, as well as getting you

(01:51:30):
into the game, get you into the fan zone, the
sky fan Zone on the Kennard's out of Oval Eden
Park from one forty five. So if you've got a
ticket to the game next Saturday at Eden Park, you
can go to the fan zone from one forty five.
The game kicks off at five past five. Of course, food, drink,
interactive fun, live music, and we're going to be broadcasting
from there. Not as I say that that is necessarily important,

(01:51:52):
but you can come and say gooday. If you luck,
we might get your thoughts on the game. So we've
had about we've been giving away the double pass. We've
had about a million texts, including some that incorrectly spelt bleduslow,
but many, many many more that did spell bledisloe correctly.
We've asked our text machine to randomly generate us a winner. Andrew, Mate,

(01:52:14):
it's you, beauty. Now can you get to Auckland? Are
you in Auckland? Or can you get to Auckland.

Speaker 5 (01:52:24):
I'm on the beautiful pep Mar He have plenty so yeah,
I can get to Aukland for sure.

Speaker 9 (01:52:29):
A couple of hours.

Speaker 3 (01:52:30):
Excellent. Now the big question, now, I guess Andrew, is
is who was going to be nicest to you over
the next six days in order to get the other
the other other half of the double pass.

Speaker 9 (01:52:40):
Yeah, my managed to have a sweet steak on that one.

Speaker 3 (01:52:43):
We'll see how we go.

Speaker 5 (01:52:44):
Maybe my wife might want to get in there.

Speaker 1 (01:52:46):
But.

Speaker 3 (01:52:48):
What imagine she'd be at the front of the Q, Andrew.
I mean, I don't want to. I don't want to
make the decision for you, mate, but it might be
sensible to perhaps offer it to her first.

Speaker 10 (01:52:57):
At least these things have never before gone conclusion, mate.

Speaker 3 (01:53:02):
Top man, Andrew, you won make double pass for You're
going to put your back on hold Andy, and he's
going to talk to you a bit more and we'll
see you hopefully at the fan zone, but certainly at
the game next Saturday night.

Speaker 11 (01:53:12):
Perfect.

Speaker 3 (01:53:12):
Thanksoni a pleasure, mate, look look forward to seeing you
and thanks to New Zealand Rugby for making the double
pass available to us. Please join us at the fan
zone one forty five. It starts at Kennard's out of
oval at Eden Park next weekend and then onto the game.
Of course, let's get your state side to catch up.
We'll catch you up on the latest and Americans sportly
on Busby is with us. Leon, How are you doing mate.

Speaker 10 (01:53:36):
I'm great, Mato through Jason, thanks for having me back.
God heaps to cover, So let's get in today.

Speaker 3 (01:53:41):
Let's go NBA preseason just eleven days away. The LA Clippers,
though under investigation for alleged circumvention of the salary cap,
tell us about this.

Speaker 10 (01:53:52):
Yes, even though the NBA is still in its all seasons,
it's penny to discuss. With so much to cover in football, Lander,
just for today, I want to focus on this one
main headline. So as you alluded to, the league front
officers investigating allegations that they LA Clippers facilitated a twenty
eight million US dollar no show endorsement Gill for star

(01:54:13):
forward Kawhi Leonard with a now bankrupt sustainability company called Aspiration,
allegedly in an effort to circumvent or find a way
around the NBA salary cap. Now the Clippers have adamantly
denied these damn allegations. This is not a good look
for franchise owners. Steve Barmer, the form of Microsoft CEO
and tech Mogulworth are reported one hundred and fifty five

(01:54:34):
billion US dollars now he allegedly signed off the arrangement
for Lended, who's widely considered the best two way player
in the league the last decade. This story was uncovered
by ESP and investigated reporter Pablo Torre and is gaining
traction following news from only a few days ago. There's
a massive paper trail that implicates the Clippers. So NBA

(01:54:55):
Commissioner Adam Siel was trying his best to downplay the
whole scandal, saying that all of the evidence so far circumstantial,
but a lot of NBA owners and executives are nervously
waiting any penal. I think it's fair to say that
this may not be just a one off in discretion
but teams run into their training camps and the regular
season topping off, and just over four weeks on October

(01:55:16):
twenty one, Adam Stilber will be keenly to get this
distraction pushed to the side, and it's a really bad
look for the association. Will certainly keep eyes on any
developments finally, because the latest collective barging agreement means that
the overcome could have far reaching implications.

Speaker 11 (01:55:31):
For years to come.

Speaker 3 (01:55:32):
Indeed, yeah, quite the story, as you say, leone will
keep eyes on it. Let's go to Major League Baseball
before we hit the football news. Last week of the
regular season, who are the genuine contenders to win the
Baseball World Series this year?

Speaker 10 (01:55:46):
Yes, So, the grueling one hundred and sixty two game
regular season finally comes to a closed Tuesday week and
there are a number of teams at the top of
a heat leaping into October. So in the American League,
the Toronto Blue Jays lead the conference, then the New
York Yankees, the Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers for third,
and the Boston Red Sox and Houston asher Is tight
for fourth, rounding up the top contenders. Over in the

(01:56:09):
National League, the top five teams see the Milwaukee Brewers
leading the conference, closely followed by the Philadelphia Police, Chicago Cubs,
LA Dodgers, and the San Diego Padres. Of note, the
Brewers lead all teams in terms of run differential with
a dominant plus one eighty four. The next closest are
the Yankees fifty one runs behind. So the brew crew

(01:56:30):
have a great opportunity, Piney to dethrone the Dodgers, who
have the most stacked and deep roster than any other
side of the majors of season should be a compelling postseason.

Speaker 3 (01:56:39):
Nonetheless, now you've picked out three active players who have
been in the past and may well be matched one
as again this October.

Speaker 10 (01:56:46):
Yep. So there's a couple of standout individuals heading into
October one. I mentioned last time I was on as
catcher for the Seattle Mariners Caleb Rally in the American League.
So earlier this week Cal went yard as they say,
and becoming only the twenty first batter and Major League
Baseball history that had fifty four plus home runs in
a single season and also as a catcher. Even more

(01:57:07):
impressive was he tied Yankees great Hall of Famer Mickey
Mantle for the most home runs by a switch hitter.
That's the batter who can hit from both sides of
the plate, which is verified here. Today, Raleigh has ten
multi home run games in twenty twenty five, just one
shy of playing the Major League Baseball record. It's also
a two horse race between Raleigh and Yankee Sager Aaron

(01:57:28):
Judge with the American League mvyper Water, which will go
down to the wire. Judges previously picked up the prestigious
award twice in twenty twenty two and twenty twenty four.
The other player and often seen as the face of
the league, Johey Eltini from the defending champion LA Dodgers
in the National League. So earlier this week, he set
more MLB history, becoming the first player to record fifty

(01:57:50):
strikeouts and fifty home runs in a single season. He
achieved the feet in the same game. That's crazy so
that two nights ago, Showtime also hit a go ahead
bomb a fifty second home run, again proving he's easily
the best two way player in the game, phenom for
his generations. And finally, Piney, after eighteen seasons with the

(01:58:11):
LA Dodgers, eleven time All Star and three time National
League Side Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw has decided to
call it a day and hang up his cleats. The
thirty seven year old Texan native and left handed pitcher
is a double World Series champion and widely regarded as
one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history, more so
in the regular seasons. Piershaw is one of only ten

(01:58:32):
twin sorry twenty pitchers and four lessties to record more
than three thousand strikeouts in his pro career, with an
ERA of only two points point five four a remarkable feed.
He even threw a no hitter once back in twenty fourteen,
a game in which the teen does not record had
against the starting pitcher. The future First Ballot Wall of
Famer will also be fondly remembered for his humanitarian and

(01:58:54):
philanthropic work during a stellar Korean which, as overall earnings
are estimated around US staggering five hundred and fifteen million
Jew Zealand ozah. That's crazy. So I think it's better
say pony that Cushaw won't be short of any money
anytime as soon as is impending your tirement.

Speaker 3 (01:59:10):
I think you might be right. Let's go to football.
College football is underway. Who are the teams to watch
ym college football?

Speaker 10 (01:59:16):
Yes, the college football is into Week four already, and
there are a number of teams from one hundred and
thirty NCAA Division One ranks in the current narrative. Let's
focus on those schools showing.

Speaker 11 (01:59:26):
Up every week.

Speaker 10 (01:59:27):
The top twenty five rankings are released by a selection
committee made up of thirteen members based on previous weekend results,
where teams can shift up and down dependent on their performances.
If we look at just the top ten for now,
we have the recognized powerhouse football programs leading the pack,
the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes, Den State, Nittany Lyons,

(01:59:48):
Louisiana State University or Alice You Tigers, Miami Florida Hurricanes,
Georgia Bulldogs, Oregon Ducks, Florida State Seminoles, Texas Longhorns, Illinois
Folly Fighting Illini as sort of pronounced it twice it's
a hard one, and the Texas A and m Aggie
rounding off the top ten. I've said love some of

(02:00:08):
those names. Finding his team named don't terestfully though, Nine
of the top ten teams are three and zero but
the Texas Longhorns are two and one ahead of other
schools below who are also unbeaten.

Speaker 7 (02:00:20):
Now.

Speaker 10 (02:00:20):
The reason for this is that the selection committee have
a lot of different factors they consider before releasing the
new rankings weekly. One of those is what's known as
a team's strength of schedule, basically meaning a school can
still make the now twelve team national playoffs even if
they lose two games as they're playing schedule for the
season is much tougher than what some other schools have

(02:00:40):
to face. Also quickly, the last point on college before
the high trains surrounding Texas quarterback Arch Manning has flowed
considerably due to its underwhelming performances three games in the
air apparent from the first family of football. The Mannings
is under immense pressure from the long Horns fan base,
who are rightly demanding results. As Manning earns a healthy

(02:01:02):
twelve million New Zealand dollars annually throughout multiple nil endorse
it's easily the highest paid athlete in all of college sports. Thankfully,
as tr playing the unranked Sam Houston Bearcats I've never
heard of before today and an easy winner is on
the card, But the pressure ramps up for Manning in
the next two games, placing the Florida Gators away and
the resurgent Oklahoma as soon as at home. Will definitely

(02:01:23):
be watching closely pinting to see if he delivers or
if his stock continues to fall.

Speaker 3 (02:01:28):
All right, we're running out of time, mate, But I
want to get a bit on the NFL. Can you
give us just a brief summer of where we are
three weeks in the AFC and the NFC.

Speaker 5 (02:01:37):
Yes.

Speaker 10 (02:01:38):
So there's a few teams that are at three or
no and a few that are two or no. But
the biggest talking point at the moment is about the
Kansas City Chiefs. Now it looks like their dynastic run
might be over. They're currently own two the first time
and you read the Pitcher Combs era and now beyond
the customer I've owned three is there on the road tomorrow.
The history shows that teams that start oh and two

(02:01:58):
have only a ten percent chance to make the playoffs,
and only one team an NFL history has ever had
the playoffs after starting out owen three. So if you
look at it, they're really up against it right now,
because as I said, they're on the road, they're open too.
They're facing oh and three and so there's a real
possibility that they won't make the finals. Also, the Cincinnati

(02:02:19):
Bengals have been hampered even though the two or no
because the star quarterback Joe Burrow is out for the
rest of the season after undergoing foot surgery. So again,
some of the top teams are against it. But if
we look at the favorite teams, I'm picking more likely
towards the Philadelphia Eagles, the Buffalo Bulls, the Baltimore Ravens
are the top teams really and maybe the Detroit Lions

(02:02:41):
as well. To be able to get that Vince Lombardy
and lift it at the end of February.

Speaker 3 (02:02:47):
Wonderful stuff. Leon, always enjoy chatting American sport with you.
Thank you for your comprehensive rappers always. We'll do it
