Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from News Talks EDB.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Let's scoop from.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
The track, fields and the court on your home of sport.
Weekend Sport with Jason Vine us.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Talks MB eleven O seven. Welcome into an elongated weekend
sports show on News Talks EDB. I get the feeling
we're going to need it with a bit of audience
reaction to watch this played out in WONA series history
made Argentina have beaten the All Blacks for the first
time on home soil, twenty nine points to twenty three.
That means after two rounds of the Rugby Championship, all
(00:42):
four teams have a win and a loss. The All
Blacks take a bonus point for getting within seven. That
has them at the top of the table for now,
but big challenges in coming from South Africa and from Australia.
This could well be the closest rugby Championship in many
many years. Elliott Smith and anstraw And had the call
for you. They join us for a bit of a
mop up at the end, a few things to furrow
(01:04):
the brow of the All Blacks coaching staff, and you
talked a lot about the aerial battle. Is that a
challenging fix? Is it fixable?
Speaker 4 (01:13):
Well, I think it's always fixable, Piny, But it was
significant tonight. It wasn't just one or two occasions. It
was probably more than ten. And my concerns teams are
going to the air a lot more. Of course, South
Africa probably one of the best exponents in the world
to put the ball in the air and contest, and
we just have to get our system set up better
and then our skill set of actually reading the ball
(01:35):
the flight, get up, get the ball, because you know,
teams are just going to keep hammering us in that
phase of the game, and of course if we can't
do that, it's just going to put us under pressure.
And it's basically an attacking option for teams now, rather
than a kick, go suffocate them and try and get
the ball back. So that's an area obviously they've probably
been working on it for a while, to be honest, mate,
(01:55):
But it's a concern right now.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
All right, Elliott, It's one of a number of concerns.
What else do you think will be top of mind
as the All Blacks hop on the plane head home
for these two mets of Tests against South Africa.
Speaker 5 (02:07):
Well, I think it has to be disciplined, if not
the aerial contest, discipline and accuracy, and we saw tonight
the All Blacks reduced to thirteen men late in the
first spell and then for fourteen men at the end
of the game three yellow cards. Their discipline simply isn't
good enough. And this has been an ongoing issue for
New Zealand Rugby and the All Blacks, not for just
five years or so, but probably even a little bit longer.
(02:29):
And there doesn't seem to be a way to fix
it for the All Blacks. So that's a concern for me,
is that they give up too many yellow cards and
games too many, too many penalties, and that puts them
on the back foot and attacking wise as well, they
were just lacking the accuracy. Ball carrying was poor. They
didn't get a lot of meterage. Look at the post
(02:49):
contact meters. I'm just looking at the stats and the
ad break there and post content meter is something big
in the game now, it's how many metage you get
once the initial hit comes. Argentina three hundred and eighty
six meters the All Blacks one hundred and twenty one.
Now Argentina had a lot more carries than the All Blacks,
but Argentina were just able to dominate the visionaries and
put the All Blacks on the back foot, and the
All Blacks at times in that game honestly seemed not
(03:11):
to have any answers.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
And it was also illustration, as you say, of where
the possession was in the game. If you've got three
hundred and eighty six post contact meters compared to one
twenty one ants, it means you've got the ball a
heck of a lot more. They won the territory and
the possession battle tonight, Argentina.
Speaker 4 (03:27):
Yeah, yeah, they did. I mean they had. They were
patient on attack. They made a few errors, I guess,
and they basic catch pass early on, but they generally
held onto the ball for long periods of time. Ill
discipline got them on attack and it kept them in
that All Black half. The territory battle, the aerial battle
kept them there as well. So the wealth of possession
is always going to take its toll. And of course
when you put pressure on with possession, the ill discipline comes,
(03:50):
you lose players off the field and you know ultimately
points will come. The three points at all the tries
And also just came back to Elliott's point, just if
we look at the way we attack and we didn't
have a lot of ball, we hardly ran six or
seven or more. I mean, how often can we say,
when we summarize an all Black Test match that we
(04:11):
haven't had the ball for seven or more phases on
a number of occasions. So that was just indicative of
our own ability I guess to set up our attack
and hold on to the right people for periods of time.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
And can I stay with you on the on the
yellow cards? Do you think the players know what is
a deliberate knock on and what isn't?
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (04:31):
I do, but I mean you know this is this
is no excuse, of course. I mean a penalty is
a penalty of cards a card, and the interpretations are
a little bit different, to be honest. It's just that
split second decision you make. Am I caught in the
wrong space? Do I have a shot for the ball?
Because I think I can get it? But if I do,
that's high risk, high reward. And if I don't get
(04:53):
it right, I've got a yellow card. Well, you know
all of those things going through your mind in a
split second it's pretty hard to get that decision dead
right every time. Maybe they need to go to a
more conservative approach and just say, hey, look, I'm under pressure.
I'm just going to and wait for my other defenders
to come and help me. Then we'll go get him.
I think they do, but I think they get given
a bit of a license to push the envelope. We
(05:15):
say it's old cliche, of course, and maybe as Alliance
here we've just been doing it too often and it's
costing us and Elliott.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
For you, when you have a defeat, you often look
at what changes you could make potentially personnel wise. It's
not as though the All Blacks are missing a whole
bunch of players. Do you see changes tweaks? You know,
a major refresh for the test in a couple of
weeks at Eaton Park.
Speaker 5 (05:40):
I mean it's hard to see it, isn't it.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
Piney.
Speaker 5 (05:42):
I guess Will Jordan didn't have one of his better nights,
but they're not going to ax him for that test
against the box. We saw Billy Procter probably at times
have one of his better test matches that he's had.
But Rico Uani was quiet. Calib Clark may be fit,
but he's touch and go. Not a lot of changes
screaming out. You'd probably bring Satiti back into the starting pack,
(06:05):
but again it's it's accuracy. It's things like that. The
question will be around half back, of course, is Ratam
attacking the injury to probably the chest or the ribs.
They're already three half backs down, two half backs down.
There could be a third down. Whether Christie is the
man for Eden Parker. That's going to be fascinating. But
no changes scream out because it's not like the options
waiting and the Wings are putting their hand up necessarily either.
(06:27):
So some thinking for Scott, Robinson and coder Zoo on
that long plane ride back from Argentina.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
Indeed, thanks you guys, appreciate your post match wrap up
and your commentary this morning. Elliott Smith our rugby editor
and lead commentator alongside form All Blacks halfback and expert
analyst and Straw and they'll be back on your radio
on the night of September sixth when the All Blacks
welcome the challenge of the spring box to Eden park
We'll have it for you of course here on news Talks.
(06:53):
He'd b thirteen past eleven All right while we're here
right through until three, So let's get underway. Your chance
to react immediately before you hear anything in terms of
postmatch from the players, from the coaches. We'll have a
sister coach at Jason Holland joining us sometime in the
next hour or so. But your chance to react immediately.
Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty to what you
(07:14):
saw out there, messy, scrappy, inaccurate. I've written down here
ill disciplined three yellow cards. That's five yellow cards in
two games now. And look, you can say what you
like about the deliberate knock on rule, and I still
think it's confusing, but there is work to do. South
(07:35):
Africa will not be looking at that game this morning
and quaking in their boots about coming to try and
break the Eden Park curse. Too many penalties given away
in dangerous positions. The All Blacks outscored Argentina three tries
to two.
Speaker 6 (07:49):
It was the five.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
Penalties that were the difference out there. And the aerial battle.
Plenty of work to do there in the aerial battle.
Oh eight hundred eighty ten eighties. Our number phones are
starting to ring already. Let's get a Breakaway eleven fourteen.
Back with your calls after this and your feedback nineteen
ninety two for text messages, I eight hundred eighty ten
eighty on the phone.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
Don't get caught off side cool.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
I w eight hundred eighty ten eighty Weekend Sports with
Jason Paine and GJ. Gunnerhomes New Zealand's most trusted home
builder News Dogs.
Speaker 5 (08:21):
V Taken off the back by my tide. He winds up,
Pablo Materra, Mike go himself had I made a short
Gonzado gu.
Speaker 7 (08:28):
Saya scores the.
Speaker 5 (08:29):
Half back shots down Argentina twenty four point thirteen and
a kick to gum.
Speaker 3 (08:34):
Yeah, Argentina doing a job on the All Blacks twenty nine,
twenty three and one A series lines open to react.
I eight hundred eighty ten eighty kick us off, Jason.
Speaker 8 (08:44):
Three Things final and my heart dunk. When I think
body missed that a penalty under the six. There was
three points in at the end of the game. Boden
missus twelve points points when test matches, I think it's as.
Speaker 9 (08:58):
Clear as that I I.
Speaker 8 (09:01):
I think it ended up twenty nine to twenty six
or something like that. When McKenzie slotted that, you know,
point just to get a bone this point. But there's
your first problem. Secondly, I think I counted thirty six
balls in the air, all blacks one zero of the
only ones that we got in the air that contested.
We're not to afford anyway, and I went back to
Argentina's side. There's our second problem and third problem. And
(09:23):
South Africa will just absolutely punish us to the cows
come home in a couple of weeks.
Speaker 10 (09:28):
On that, on that tactic. Third one.
Speaker 8 (09:31):
As I rang last week with the same albeit on
the back of a winning forms for all Blacks. As
Rico Jojuani has just been carried. He's a luxury.
Speaker 9 (09:40):
Can't afford.
Speaker 8 (09:41):
Just get rid of him. He had his worst game
last week I've seen in a while, and today was
even nonexistent.
Speaker 11 (09:48):
There's my point.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Yeah, no good points, Jase. Can I just address the
goal kicking one? Yeah, yeah, that boat and Barrett one
that he missed from a very handy position. Yeah, that's
just not like I mean, the two conversions he missed
will from wide outl I mean, I think we have to,
you know, have to sort of, I guess give him
a degree of latitude there or that. Having said that,
Damien McKenzie came on and converted the tokiajo try from
(10:13):
you know, from his I guess the less ideal side
for around the corner kicker. You're right, I mean you
can't leave points out there in test matches. I don't know.
I think I think the middle one is the one
that the point that you made the aerial battle man
and like man Ant Strawn is a guy I listened
(10:34):
to as probably one of the most astute rugby analysts
we have, and I listened to Elliott and Ant's commentary
while watching the game and he's dead right. Teams will
see that as a vulnerability, as a weakness. They will
bombard us in the air. It's something that they have
to fix real quick.
Speaker 8 (10:56):
You make that point about you know the difficulty of
the kicks, Well, look at the argentining guy. He didn't
miss nothing and he was kicking them arguably for more
difficult spaces in Boden Barrett, and what do you think
the goalkicker for South that Brook is going to do.
They're kicking at ninety two percent, So I don't see
that as being a defense on Bowden Bart. You just
got to stump up and kick the kicks.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
Over indeed, and he has been doing it, Jace. I look,
you're right. He'll look at you know, he'll look back
and say, yeah, he left points out there. He won't
be happy, of course he won't be He's a perfectionist,
Boden Barrett. He won't be happy with the mist kicks
at goal. And you're right, that's more of a I guess,
a quantifiable reason for the loss, the fact that he
(11:37):
missed all of those points and we only lost by six.
I think the deeper issue here is around discipline and
giving away penalties and kickable positions five penalties Argentina kicked five.
But also that aerial battle. It's becoming a battle ground
or a battle air probably more more correctly, and it's
(12:01):
one that we're not winning at the moment. Those stats
are worrying, Jason. If you counted thirty old and when
don't win any of them, goodness me, Brent high he made.
Speaker 12 (12:09):
I'm a bit disappointed team because I lost a bit
of money. But I got a bit of work used
today because I'm a work at a man, So you
know that I'm just worrying about lit blecks. We haven't
got no star like a Carter a merchants Salon MoU
And I think that's where we're having issues, Like we
have a star and our team. He's going forward and
(12:30):
he's making ground and he's and everyone's behind him and
they follow, you know, back in the days and now
it's just like foh, someone like like Damien McKenzie came
on and kicked the kicks and I said, oh, yep, no,
we're right now. Help he's come on.
Speaker 8 (12:46):
There's a bit of spark there and no, just no.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
I reckon Brent, I reckon those players. I reckon we
do have those players, Ardie Savier, Will Jordan. I think
Will Jordan had probably one of his less memorable tests tonight,
and again he will totally reflect on that with with
a degree of disappointment at the way that he played.
But yeah, you do. We do have those guys. We
definitely have those guys, but they just they weren't there.
Speaker 12 (13:15):
I don't, I don't. I just don't think we have
those guys. Jason. It's like, I know, like I'm a
rugby man through and through, and like man, I was
in love my rugby and all that, and in watching
my life I've never been thro All Black tests and
eat and part we have lost. Now I'm living in
Wellington and I'm enjoying it down here too, and I
just struggle why we've got no stars. Like even though
(13:39):
I go to Club Rugby down in Wellington, I haven't
really seen a star up in Wayn and I stayed
in Taranaki for I didn't see any stars there. I'm
just worried about a rugby Jason, like because of the
the no superstars we used to have, like in the
in the days. I understand your Will Jordan. He's sensational, yes,
you know, in early Savina he's a top forward, but
(14:02):
they're not like the long moos and the carters and
the can you understand what I'm talking about?
Speaker 10 (14:07):
You know, like you haven't.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
Yeah, another way I put it. Another way of putting it, yeah, Brent,
So another way putting it, mate, it's probably okay, which
All Black makes a World fifteen right now? That's probably
another way of putting it. And I think Ardie Savior
and Will Jordan's certainly have they can mount an argument
for that not based you can't just obviously based it
off one game. You know, a body of work I
think they're generally recognized Will Jordan and Artie Savia as
(14:31):
world class players. But having said that, you look at
the games this year, Brent, you know, three wins over
France where really, you know, there was only probably one
good half of rugby in the entire three games by
the All Blacks that I'd be really happy with, and
that was the first half in Wellington, Argentina. Last week
they got back to within seven and we sort of
stretched away at the end and now a loss over
(14:53):
there for the first time. So you know that there's
even if you do have those players, they can't do
it by themselves.
Speaker 12 (15:03):
Okay, is it what you're thinking? Okay, no, I'll be
with you in or just I'm just thinking that that's
that's the problem with us. We've got no superstars like
back in the days. Like I said, long Moon he
just got which really merchants was we've.
Speaker 13 (15:16):
Got no goal kicker.
Speaker 12 (15:17):
They can kick a ball from a long way away,
you know, like from like the ten medal line when
you got you see this guy from France and like
the guy just said before, the guy from Africa, the
guy from Argentina, they just kicked the ball from anywhere.
When they get penalized, and a lot of penalties. When
the ball goes up on the air, like on the
ten medal line. The ball goes up, we go for it.
(15:37):
And obviously we saw Steve Uskiet sent off, which was
annoying because that was just a bloody joke. And as
soon as I saw that ref today, actually I had
a funny felling there was going to be a lot
of issues and I was right. We lost, and just
just just annoying. How you see that. You see the
future of this happening, and it's just annoying because you'll
(15:59):
follow the team for so long and then they started
to disappoint you.
Speaker 3 (16:05):
You have a good day too, nice day and Wellington, Brent,
but the sunshine for you to enjoy, plus the shield
for your Wye Ko boys appreciate you call them man,
and it's look, we've all got different views, right, and
that's what this is about. Eleven twenty five phone lines
are lighting up. Jump aboard if you can. I eight
hundred eighty ten eighty back in a moment. That's me
back on the radio. I eight hundred eighty ten eighty
eleven twenty seven lines are full, but please keep trying Tim,
(16:28):
thanks for holding. Good afternoon, no, good morning, good morning.
Speaker 14 (16:31):
Finally, first and foremost congradulations to Argentina, the first time
that's been in the All Blacks and in Argentina, so
that's a massive effort.
Speaker 11 (16:40):
We were off from the start.
Speaker 15 (16:41):
We were off from the start.
Speaker 14 (16:42):
I think a lot of our players got found out today,
especially sevu Reese. It kept coming in for some reason.
He kept coming in off as wing and that allowed
space for their wingers. And I think, you know, Cardis
should come into the mix, but it's going to be
hard because we've got the spring Box next there, Pat
and the spring Box. You know they want their number
(17:04):
one rankings. I think we we don't lose the number
one rankings for now, but we'll have to wait and
see it. But what a great competition, mate, It's open.
Anyone can win it.
Speaker 3 (17:14):
That's so true. Yeah, it's so true. And I think
you know with the spring Box coming now. As I
said to Elliot Smith before, I'm not sure if you
heard our postmatch rap, but it's not as though there
are wholesale changes which can be made. Look, I think
we keep our fingers crossed for cam Royguard and or
no A Hotham or the Hotham seems like a long shot.
I think we absolutely keep our fingers crossed at cam
(17:35):
Rouyguard is going to be okay in a couple of weeks.
He is the one player who I think, you know
could make a difference. Cortez Latimer got that rib injury today.
We don't know how bad that is. So all of
a sudden, if Roygard isn't isn't fit and the hoth
them isn't fit and Ratama has has a rib problem,
then we're Finlay Christie and Kyle Preston, who would be
(17:59):
on debut and the biggest test we've played in some
time at Eden Park in a couple of weeks.
Speaker 14 (18:05):
Yeah, that's a scary thought. And especially the tips that
Russy has created in South Africa, it's going to be
very interesting in them coming to eden Buck. No one's
won the instance well two to your views now, so
we have to keep that record and I still feel
like we're the favorites, but there needs to be changes,
especially in their back line.
Speaker 16 (18:23):
Just Bunny got on.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
Your tim Always good to hear your thoughts. My thanks
to day oh eight one hundred and eighty ten eighty Graham.
Speaker 17 (18:29):
Hello, Oh get Jason, how are you mate?
Speaker 3 (18:32):
Too many Crusaders on this team?
Speaker 18 (18:33):
Grime?
Speaker 19 (18:35):
Not enough mate?
Speaker 17 (18:36):
No, I mean look, I mean I don't want to
sound obvious, but I respect what they last callers said
about the back line. But I think that loose forward
trio was talked up big time. And you're gonna look
at what they said about Simon Parker, who's a big
body and he's going to move South South African players. Well,
he was playing at Argentina and a battle were tough,
(19:00):
tough Lucies and they got they got spanked. I mean, Ardie,
we know he's like you said, heaven will Jordan's World fifteen?
You know, question Mark, we'd argue, but those two are
nothing is already Wallis ted he played well. But people
poohod easton Blackadder and said, oh look as time's over,
we've got these new guys, bigger men. Well it's how
(19:24):
good you are. And I really think, you know a
lot of people might be flabergas at me saying this,
but I think that all black selection panel is in
disarray in terms of their selections. I think, you know,
Ian Foster coopped it and I gave it to him,
and I think I don't really think things have got
any better. And I was one of the ones that
(19:45):
touted robertson. I think they need to really go back
to the drawing board. But whether they do, like you said, Jason,
it's highly unlikely they will. I mean thought Billy Proctor
played well in the mid at third thing. You know,
he's had a you know, quite a tough introduction to
tess Rugby. You know he's actually his chance. But you
know that was a a good thing. But yeah, I
(20:08):
just think there's these things to be seriously looked at.
But I don't know. I say, I sort of seen,
so that's not going to happen.
Speaker 3 (20:16):
Yeah, And look, I you know Ethan Blackadder. We know
you know what you're going to get from them. I
thought Simon Parker actually had a reasonable debut. Great.
Speaker 17 (20:25):
Yeah, I'm not running all for the player, no no, no, no, no, no, I.
Speaker 3 (20:29):
Knew that gram. I just yeah. But but like you say,
if they're going to bring Ethan Blackader and they have
to go outside the squad they've chosen, and I just
don't think they will. You look at that, and you
look at that twenty three today and you say, well,
that's probably the bulk of that. Twenty three will play
against South Africa in a couple of weeks, so I
guess on the positive side, if you want to flip it,
(20:50):
those boys will have a big point to prove when
they run out. But yeah, there's some so so you're
not a you're not across that you're not a fan
of the of the vity Savia Parker. I think Wallace
to Titi will probably come and Amore I.
Speaker 17 (21:04):
Think, well, well keep me right. No, he said an
outstanding year he did last year at a lot. I'm
ever going an issue with him.
Speaker 20 (21:11):
I have an issue with.
Speaker 17 (21:14):
The way they basically I think the loose forwards. I'm
sorry about being one eyed, but I think some of
our loose forwards here are better than what the All
Black selectors. I've sort of said, well, yeah they won
the competition, but our loose forwards if you outplay the
Chiefs in a final. But that sort of got basically ignored.
He now got packed and he's been dropped again or
(21:35):
left out, whichever way you want to put it. It's
not the Satis and people's values and I've got any
issue with you know, those guys are deserving of their
places in the all black squad. But I just think
there should be a change direction with some of the
other ones. That's that's what I'm basically saying.
Speaker 3 (21:55):
Good on your Graham. I never ever apologize for being
one eyed, never ever do that. It's what sporters. Thanks Graham.
I appreciate your call. Dominate. Hello, good, Yeah, good Dominic.
Speaker 15 (22:07):
Thanks get it.
Speaker 21 (22:08):
Money, mate.
Speaker 22 (22:10):
I've got a few points. The first one is probably
the back three. It's probably the worst back three.
Speaker 21 (22:16):
Performance that we've had in quite a long time.
Speaker 22 (22:19):
Will Jordan for the last few games has been pretty
well nonexistent and probably the worst performance that.
Speaker 23 (22:25):
He's put in.
Speaker 21 (22:28):
So severa Reese, Well, I thought he had a pretty
good defensive role.
Speaker 22 (22:33):
Again, I agreed with your previous quarter who was pushing
in quite a lot in the centers and constricting Jordi,
Barrett and Proctor to quite you know, quite a fine
line of where they'd be able to move and got
caught out quite a few times with kickers and passes
and stuff like that. And Rita I think his days done,
to be fair made I think he wasn't a center
(22:55):
and I think he's just lost all confidence over the
last probably a couple of years and doesn't really know
where what to do or we'd play anymore, which is
quite sad since you go from world class winger to
really a non existent show on what he had today.
The problem of God has made as a few like
with with Robinson's selections, I think listening to Steve Hansen's
(23:20):
podcast a few weeks ago, no one was guaranteed their spot,
and I think the likes of the Will Jordans and
the Artis Saves which everybody seems to be in love with,
who have not performed probably the last three or four
Test matches should actually probably be dropped because the likes
of Artie s V will probably turn around after being
dropped and probably have you know, an all incumbent game
(23:41):
of coming out firing. I thought we definitely missed Carifie
on the field this week, especially in the turnovers, and
I'd like to see Scott.
Speaker 14 (23:51):
Barrett actually get in the referee's face.
Speaker 22 (23:53):
The thing I've noticed a lot with Australia South Africa
and tonight with Argentina, the captain just goes in questions.
It doesn't doesn't have to be aggravated and asking and
and you know all pushing in annoy like we've seen
Nick White a few times over the years or a
few of our players, but he's just simply asking and
questioning rest's rules or asking what they can do better,
and always getting on the rests, you know, in the
(24:15):
rest space. And I don't think we've had that consistently
from either Scott when he's been doing it, or Ardie
when he's been doing it, or whoever's been taken over
from captain. I don't think we've had enough impact in
that space get talking to the referee to be fair
and questioning what you know, what's happening. I thought Nick
Berry had had a pretty fair game, to be fair
on calls both ways, so I don't think that's the blame.
(24:36):
I think New Zealand has been looking pretty average for
the last few matches and blaming it all on Bowden
Bart I don't think was pretty fair. I thought Will
Jordan probably should have been taken off in Citizen.
Speaker 3 (24:48):
Right don at great points well made right. I've written
down some names here made as we try and construct
a back three for South Africa. I think Will Jordan
keeps his place. He has got four tries made, he's
a try scoring machine. I think he was. I think
he I don't think he was below you know, the
line against France. I think he's you know, he's he's
still got So I think Will Jordan stays there. I
(25:08):
think Caleb Clark is still injured. So I've written down
here Leo Carter, Sorry, Leroy Carter, Emoni, Nadawa, Reuben Love,
Severa Reese, Rico Yojani, so that they're the options. Really,
I'm looking forward to Caleb Clark coming back because he
will fix some of the aerial problems. But in his absence,
what is the back three against South Africa. Let's say
(25:29):
Will Jordan plays fullback. Who are the wingers?
Speaker 22 (25:33):
Well, that's the problem. I mean, you haven't really he
hasn't really built any depths there. I think you've you'd
have to put maybe Nadawa in there. Or do you
look at someone like, yeah, well there, or do you
have to stick with Debby Reese really don't you? Or
or you have to turn around and stay to someone like,
you know, one of the new boys that haven't been picked,
like a I don't know, like a Naholo or one
(25:56):
of those guys you know, or a Tabanawa. He can
play out of the wing. Do you go to him
and go, yeah, this is your chance.
Speaker 3 (26:03):
You know, this is yes, and it's such an interesting one. Dominant.
They're out of time, right, They're out of time. There's
no more games. The next game is this game that
has been circled in all of our calendars ever since
the schedule for the Rugby Championship was released, This big
game against South Africa Eden Park. We haven't lost there
for you know, since nineteen ninety four. Everything kind of
(26:23):
seemed to be leading towards this game. And we're now
out of time. There's no more opportunity to test things out.
So they kind of got to go all in on
whatever they go all and on. And I just don't
know whether there's the mood in this in this selection
panel to to make change.
Speaker 6 (26:42):
You know.
Speaker 3 (26:42):
Wingers for me are hot hands, you know. And they
talked about Leroy Carter coming into the All Blacks Wider
training group and tearing things up. I'd give them a game, man, I'd.
Speaker 8 (26:51):
Give them a game, one hundred percent.
Speaker 22 (26:54):
And I think for this time, Plinty, they should have
had Leroy Carter and Reuben Love in there. They should
have given them gain time before South Africa and they didn't.
It was it was a mis selection from them. The
other point I probably make is is the loose for
trio needs to be looked at again. Artie Selvera I
think thought had been quite quiet and maybe dropping him
(27:15):
would give him, you know, the aggravation going into South Africa.
I think unfortunately so TT and VII don't know or
don't look like they know where they want to play
in position wise, because they've been chucked in loose, loose
forward and lock so many times they don't know what
they're doing. I think VIA's ill discipline is a bit
of a worry because it's been brought up a few
(27:36):
times where he's been stuck a handout or done something
stupid to get sent off. So do you do you
change pack and look like someone you know, turn around
and give give the the Jacobson's or the Carters or
the you know, the caref. He's a chance and go
you've got your chance, stick with it. Do you bring
someone else in like your lark eyes? Do you or
(27:58):
your your sees or your tits and go we're all
building new these are you?
Speaker 9 (28:02):
Loose forward?
Speaker 15 (28:03):
Young boys?
Speaker 22 (28:04):
Like Australia did a couple of years ago and the Schmidt.
You know, maybe and maybe we're pasted that time now,
maybe the selectors are too scared to do that, and
we're looking at probably another smashing in the World Cup Dominate.
Speaker 3 (28:17):
Great points, well mate, thanks for ringing in and giving us,
giving us your thoughts, much appreciated. Twenty one away from midday,
one thousand texts which I'm never going to get to,
but all making very salient points. Thank you for sending
them through. Don't let it stop you. We do read
them all, we just can't read them all out. Let's
get a breakaway come back after this. Oh one hundred
and eighty ten to eighty for your thoughts.
Speaker 1 (28:37):
The Voice of Sport on your Home of Sport Weekend
Sport with Jason Vyne and GJ. Gunner Homes New Zealand's
most trusted home builder News Talks.
Speaker 5 (28:46):
It'd be Christy quick for Jordi, Barrett voting Barrett Will
Jordan swings a pass away left wing touch line side
Reto Yuani swings and left swing right. Hell just a
meter short. Your Black's putting on pressure. Buddy Propter gets
a nice pass from Finlay. Christy and the all Blacks
get their first.
Speaker 3 (29:03):
Try eight six eighteen away from mid day? Was all
looking okay at that point? Wasn't a twenty nine twenty
three to the Pumas over the All Blacks. If you're
just joining us today, Chris.
Speaker 21 (29:14):
You know, mate, how are good things?
Speaker 18 (29:16):
Are you?
Speaker 1 (29:16):
Good?
Speaker 3 (29:16):
Thanks?
Speaker 24 (29:16):
Chris?
Speaker 25 (29:18):
My thoughts?
Speaker 21 (29:18):
Look, our four pack performed relatively well. I'm happy with
them over the last couple of tests. You know, when
we get close to the line, they managed to rumble
over and score tries. You know, they do well at
the set peace against a far bigger pack, which is
a good thing. So I see progress there. But when
it comes to the backs, what I've noticed in the
(29:41):
last maybe three or four years with the All Blacks
is our back line we're not producing the tries like
we used to. We're scoring with the backs opportunistic tries,
and I think there's a lack of punch. I mean,
going back in the day, you know, we yet Manon
ub and Conrad Smith, et cetera. They were making tries
(30:04):
in free play, whereas the current crew that we have
playing right now are being shut down by everybody you
know in the top four or five in the world.
So I think we're going to have a lot of that.
I mean, another thing is I don't know why we
haven't dayboot the Otago Playoff five. Sorry the Highlanders player
at Tava.
Speaker 3 (30:22):
Tava sorry ta ta Now he has day boot he
yep he played, Yep. No, he played off the bench
in well in Wellington and Hamilton against France. Okay, so yeah,
but he is there.
Speaker 21 (30:40):
I want to see him start a game at twelve,
Jordy at thirteen. I want to see Will Jordan moves
to the right wing until Caleb gets back, Reese on
the left and Reuben Love at fallback. Because yeah, I
love Will Jordan because I'm a one eyed Cantabrian, but
under the high ball and international rugby, he's just not
doing it. I mean, game after game after game, he
(31:03):
is not winning the percentage catch as a fallback. And
that's the most important thing for a fallback is, as
previous callers have said, absolute weakness for the old beets.
If I'm a South African in two weeks, what I'm
going to do. I'm going to put half back bombs
up all day and just hammer hammer, hammer, hammer hammer.
So I think we need to adapt and give other
(31:25):
guys an opportunity. Two years out from a World Cup.
This is the year to breed guys into the team
that are going to be there. So this is the
time to shine. And you know, give the selectors a
little bit of a headache if we keep down with
this trajectory. We've got a dud backline. We're not punching
through holes.
Speaker 3 (31:45):
Just on the move of Will Jordan. If he moved
to the wing, he'd still be the subject of an
aerial aerial bombardment. Chris, I think you know, they talk
about the back three almost being interchangeable. I take your point,
but I think you know, whether you move Will Jordan
or not. I think the greater work on is his
aerial game. And look, he's a very intense elligent rugby player.
(32:07):
I'm sure that under the right guidance he would improve
in that area, and I'm sure he's doing a high
degree of self reflection on it. But yeah, and now
I'm not sure that they've worked out the best back three. Yeah,
I'm not sold on en Rico Yoanni on the wing.
Just Shane Caleb Clark.
Speaker 21 (32:25):
Isn't there, you know, absolutely like Cayler Clark. Like for me,
he's got that John o Lomu factor in a way
that one on one he can bash a bloke over.
And I look forward to his return, even though he's
from Aukland, so I hadn't thrown it in there, but
I see his just absolute damaging capability, and you know,
(32:49):
riccu Yani doesn't have that anymore. He used to be
an absolute speeds to maybe he's off the pace a
little bit or a bit tensive of you know, he's
great defensively, I'll give him that really good tackler. No
one gets past him, but just an attack, he just
he just doesn't have the go forward that we require
from a left winger. And we've been used to really
(33:11):
good wingers in New Zealand, and I think when they
moved him to center, they sort of pulled that out
of his game. And now we're seeing the reward of
him being stuck at center for so many years. So
I think his days, you know, his days are coming, unfortunately,
but he's had a good career. I'll give him that.
Speaker 3 (33:31):
Good on you, Chris, thanks for calling him mate. Yeah, look,
I think there's certainly some thinking to do around selection
of the back three. I'd keep Will Jordan at fallback.
I absolutely would. I think that's his position and that's
where I would play him. But I think the eleven
and fourteen jumpers are well and truly up for grabs,
well and truly up for grabs, not just now, but
(33:51):
over the next couple of years. I don't think with
any degree of certainty you could say who's going to
start for the All Blacks in the first game of
the next Rugby World Cup on the wings? You know,
you think about when George Bridge came into the side.
I think with sevu Reese said, head of the twenty
nineteen Rugby World Cup. You know that hardly played, but
they were the hot hand, A pot of ham up,
Hello mate, beautiful.
Speaker 19 (34:14):
Day A well he's today.
Speaker 26 (34:17):
Just just think start.
Speaker 19 (34:20):
I haven't called you for a couple of months, and
the last time was when old Scott Robertson was on
and I asked him the question about kick reception, kick diffusing,
kick chase and he didn't really answer it and his
team are still not answering it on the field and
it's killing.
Speaker 21 (34:40):
Us and you.
Speaker 19 (34:44):
I just don't and it's too late. We've had two
months to maybe get a bit better at it.
Speaker 8 (34:50):
There's a little guys, like Delgy, how's he catching the ball?
Speaker 13 (34:53):
He's five foot two?
Speaker 4 (34:55):
You know.
Speaker 19 (34:55):
So it's like we have the I might be catastrophied,
but we have the worst kick reception, kick chase game
of any of these top teams going around. And why
aren't they fixed in it? It's obvious, right if a
punter like me can said then who's never played women,
even senior rugby? Why are they not fixing it? Why
(35:17):
are they practicing the school set? And on our backs? Man,
they don't look confident either. They just they don't look
confident on d they don't look confident in attack. And
they were the same last year to a large degree.
So and now the Box are going to roll into town.
And that game this morning was a kick fest and
a kickchase fest. And you know, Osi do quite well
(35:39):
at it and compete pretty well, but you know guys
like Chessl and Colby he's a bit of a master
in the kick chase. Yeah, Pinney, she's going to be
a big test match in a couple of weeks.
Speaker 18 (35:48):
It is.
Speaker 3 (35:48):
It's massive, yeah. And the aerial game, it is, it's
just become a vulnerability and now it'll be a target.
Is just I mean they're just gonna the ceth ebrig
will come into town and just and they will. They'll
have an aerial game that they you know that they
employed at Eden Park and probably in Wellington as well
because the sense of vulnerability there. As Anstram said during
(36:08):
our radio commentary, if you if you catch the first
three or four, they stopped doing it and look for
another way. But if they are contesting and we're not
diffusing and not receiving, well, then they'll keep doing it
because they'll get change out of it, as Argentina did
this morning.
Speaker 19 (36:24):
Yeah, and I don't want to kick a guy, but
and they'll mate. Just before talking about Reeks D, but
even this morning, okay, we had so many guys off
the field. So yeah, even as D was a bit
useless today. But yeah, his offense, it's almost like playing
center ruined him as a winger. It seems like, yeah,
well he.
Speaker 3 (36:44):
Went all on senate, didn't he He went all in
on center, and when he was playing in the centers
or playing at center, he just almost refused to entertain
the idea of going back to the wing. It's only
the emergence of Billy Proctor who that that has basically
you know, necessitated this. But they don't have to pick
Rico Ywani on the wing if they don't want to.
I mean that's obvious. They could they could go a
different way. They could have given Carter a game Nadawah
(37:06):
even Ruben Love. It's it's like I say, though, Padahama,
It's it's too late now. You know, there's no more
Gaffer time.
Speaker 19 (37:13):
It's boom for time, unleash boom for Edam Park. He's
a him and Sevu because the energy guys, the energy
over the ruck that you know what, they bring some energy,
those two boys. And then I feel like our backland
needs at the moment.
Speaker 3 (37:29):
Indeed, enjoy the sunshine of Padahama. Good to Chetty has
always make Nine and a half to midday News talks
There be back in a moment.

Speaker 3 (37:48):
Seven to midday. Jason Holland, assistant coach of the All Blacks,
were one offs with us. After midday here is Scott
robertson with some brief postmatch thoughts. I could see of
our friends at sky.
Speaker 27 (37:59):
God rubbers on, well, racer, what can you tell me
how about the game?
Speaker 28 (38:04):
Great Argentina played with a lot of passion the wan
and a lot of execution, So well done to them.
Congratulations it's the first thing, and yeah that hurts.
Speaker 8 (38:15):
It's tough execution.
Speaker 3 (38:17):
Why we practiced all week when you.
Speaker 28 (38:20):
Was coming eerily new kickoffs? That's good, that's a good question.
I'm not sure I can answer it right now.
Speaker 8 (38:25):
Why.
Speaker 18 (38:26):
Uh, we wanted to play with.
Speaker 28 (38:30):
A lot more care than that then, you know, for
Cody and put Ash show and finish this tour, and
we didn't get that way.
Speaker 3 (38:35):
So it wasn't it wasn't what we wanted.
Speaker 18 (38:39):
We're gonna have to look deep.
Speaker 24 (38:41):
Three yellow cards in this kind of game.
Speaker 3 (38:43):
Is this is what happens? Just hands out? Yeah, exactly,
three yellow cards.
Speaker 28 (38:49):
They kicked all their penalties. We fought our way back
into the game, but we went holding the ball for
long periods of time.
Speaker 8 (38:54):
An overall, thinking about these two games here in Argentina.
Speaker 28 (38:58):
Ah, just this competition is tough. I think you can
realize with all the results to date so.
Speaker 18 (39:04):
Far, that anyone can win. On the day, you're going
to be eat.
Speaker 6 (39:06):
Your best more than ever.
Speaker 3 (39:09):
Yes, this the score, that's.
Speaker 28 (39:12):
What the table looks like now, doesn't it That anyone
can win and that's what the competition want about, and
we're going to be better.
Speaker 6 (39:19):
Thank you very much, thank you.
Speaker 3 (39:20):
That is Scott Robertson shortly after full time. Hello, Jeff
pay Good morning, Jason.
Speaker 13 (39:27):
I don't know that was my query.
Speaker 29 (39:29):
Nobody's mentioned Robinson. I've got my doubts about him, and
I think there's a few players that need replace him
with young blood now and he's not. I don't think
he's made out or turning out to be what what
everyone thought he was going to be the Cracker Jet coach,
and I think he's got to answer some questions now
about these positions of players met.
Speaker 8 (39:52):
But thanks Jason, I appreciate good.
Speaker 30 (39:54):
To listen to you. And that's my thoughts anyway.
Speaker 3 (39:57):
Very succinct and points well made. Jeff. I'm a big
part of coaching a selection, right, huge part of coaching
a selection. And Scott Robinson, I think probably fair to
say he's been conservative with his selections. He has given
a lot of guy's debuts last year in particular and
this year as well. But in terms of the you know,
(40:17):
I don't think we've seen some real innovation in selections.
But then again, I look at two Pervai playing at
six for example, Simon Parker coming in for this game.
So yes, selection is going to be a massive part
of the build up to the South African game.
Speaker 26 (40:32):
Good day, Calvin, Good morning Jason. I listened to the
game on ZBY Radio and what surprised me amazed me
in a way with the score line going from thirteen
six to the Orblecks to thirteen twenty six to Argentina.
And I was curious when it was the last time
the Orbles had twenty unanswered points against them.
Speaker 3 (40:56):
I'm sure that somebody will know, Kelvin. Look, yeah, I
don't know the answer is the answer. I'll check though,
But yeah, it's thirteen all at halftime. The yellow cards
obviously just before halftime hurt. And yeah, there's a lot
of things to drill down into a couple of texts
before we go to the news. Credit to Argentina says
(41:19):
Nathan is this their best rugby yet ever? Already went
over the lines. Now the all Blacks at home, nothing
but stoked for them, and the genuine revival of international
rugby and Nathan's dead right there and the rush to
try and analyze and All Blacks lost. We do sometimes
forget to give credit to the opposition and Argentina right
(41:39):
from the start this morning were into it, right into it.
And I thought when they came out firing, yeah, of
course they're always emotional when they start games. The anthem
stirs them up, doesn't it, and they come out firing.
But the All Blacks more often than not in the
past have soaked that up. Yes, maybe you know, gone
behind early in games, but have found a way back
(42:00):
in and they did today up until the yellow cards
just before halftime, which I think we're a bit of
a turning point, weren't they news at midday and then
weekend sport continues. Jason Holland, assistant coach of the side,
is with us straight after.
Speaker 31 (42:15):
Twelve hea this week I went to New Zealand blood
and I gave plasma. It was the first time I've
ever done it. And I tell you what, I have
never been so appreciated in all my life. If you're
feeling sort of like no one's appreciating you. These days,
go and give blood or plasma. They are hugely desperate
for both. Giving blood it look the process takes about
(42:39):
five to ten minutes. Takes about an hour in total
though to sort of get organized at the beginning and
to make sure you're okay afterwards, and you will be
absolutely fine. The plasma takes about an hour and a half.
You can do plasma every two weeks. You can only
give blood every three months. It's only four times a year.
Speaker 3 (42:56):
But I'm not kidding.
Speaker 31 (42:56):
I got embarrassed at how many people came up to
thank me for what I was doing, which was a
very simple, easy thing to do, hugely very well looked
after the teas and Bickie's and everyone's in there treating
you like is saying to And I actually got a
little bit embarrassed, but you could kind of feel the desperation.
If you have a moment, jump online go to nzblood
(43:19):
dot co dot enz As I said, they desperately need blood,
they desperately need plasma, and you know God for that
You or a family member or a friend may need them.
But you never know when this may happen, So it'll
be wonderful if you've got an opportunity, go do it.
Speaker 3 (43:34):
They will love you for it.
Speaker 31 (43:37):
Nzblood dot co dot NZ. Right. We've got a couple
of weeks off because Rugby your blacks are playing Argentina,
so we've got no shows on the seventeenth or twenty fourth.
We're going to be back on the thirty first with
the Bets. Awesome key we band here some old school
music from the Bets.
Speaker 3 (43:54):
This is future. Me hates Me.
Speaker 31 (43:56):
Jason Pine is up next. Thank you for being with us,
Thank you to care for dressing the show, Take care
of you in a couple of weeks.
Speaker 1 (44:19):
The only place for the big names, the big issues,
the big controversies and the big conversations. It's all on
Weekend Sport with Jason Lyne on your home of Sport
News Talks at be.
Speaker 3 (44:36):
A good afternoon and welcome into week Kene Sport on
News Talks at B twelve oh seven.
Speaker 5 (44:40):
And it is over twenty nine to twenty three. And
what a side is is bouncing Argentina. They did it
in Paramatta, they did it in christ Church, they did
it in Wellington, but now they do it's in their capital.
Speaker 3 (44:57):
Yes, Indeed, history made in Buona series. This morning, Argentina
have beaten the All Blacks for the first time on
home soil twenty nine, twenty three. That means that after
two rounds of the Rugby Championship, all four teams have
a win and a loss. The All Blacks pick up
a bonus point from that late penalty from Damien McKenzie
which got them to within seven. But big challenges in coming,
(45:20):
massive challenges in coming from South Africa and from Australia.
Let's not beat around the bush. This could be the
closest Rugby Championship in many, many years. Oh, eight hundred
and eighty ten eighty is our phone number. Lines have
been opened since full time and we couldn't get everybody
on the air before twelve. We'll give it a crack.
We'll certainly give it a crack. They're open the lines
(45:43):
on eight hundred and eighty ten eighty anything you want
to pick up on. Look, there's plenty to unpack here. Messy,
scrappy performance and accuracy ill disciplined. Three yellow cards penalty
has given away in dangerous positions. Lots of work to
do in the air. The aerial battle is just so
important these days and the All Blacks ain't winning it.
(46:05):
They're not winning their battle. So rugby is our focus
for the first hour of the show. We also look,
let's not forget the Warriors. Let's not forget the Warriors.
We don't, we will not forget. Then I went last
night on the Gold Coast. It looked like a home game,
didn't it. So many Kiwis on the Gold Coast loved it,
absolutely loved it. And the Warriors getting the one back
to back, they keep their top four destiny in their
(46:27):
own hands. They'll have a far more pleasant flight home,
I'm sure from the Gold Coast. Stacy Jones gonna chat
to us after one before they hop on the plane.
Your thoughts on the Warriors as well, And a bit
later on this afternoon, we'll celebrate White Kato's winning of
the rain Fully Shield. Another terrific moment of sporting drama
in Taranaki yesterday, with Limosopowanga lining up the match winning
(46:50):
penalty ball fell off the tee with only ten seconds
to go, very calmly put it back on the nailed
it and the log is headed to the tron. So yeah,
Mulu fans, we can celebrate that as well. Lines openers
a day all afternoon on oh eight hundred and eighty
ten eighty nine nine for your text messages, but let's
get you to Argentina up and get a reaction out
(47:11):
of the All Blacks camp. All Blacks assistant coach Jason
Holland is with us now. Jason, thanks for your time.
What is front of mind as you reflect on the
performance tonight?
Speaker 32 (47:22):
Look, there's lots of things, friend of mine obviously, just
ultimately really disappointed and in performance. You know, Argentinians played
some good footy, but you know where we're seeing them
has a lot of areas tonight and it cost.
Speaker 3 (47:36):
Us which areas in particular?
Speaker 18 (47:40):
Oh, look, mat there was you know a lot of
areas where we didn't perform where we wanted to.
Speaker 32 (47:45):
Obviously, you know, the Argentinians kicked really well and one
the year most times, which is which is a massive
part of the game these days, and as we've seen
from all the rugby like today with the Sun African
AUSI game and our game, if you can't win the year,
then then you loser on a position and you put
yourself under pressure.
Speaker 18 (48:04):
That's a big point, you know.
Speaker 32 (48:07):
Even like a lot of our attack and our strike
was you know, some of our line out and stuff
was off for our execution, which meant we couldn't build pressure.
And Nick Berry has always been a referee who who
you know, gives advantage for the people the team with
ball in hand, and because of those two reasons, we
didn't have it and cost us.
Speaker 18 (48:27):
So you know, there's still three key areas. And then yeah,
not much to not much that we were overly happy with.
Speaker 3 (48:36):
How big a work on is being better in the
aerial battle, Jase, And how do you do that?
Speaker 32 (48:42):
Yeah, look, it's we've been working pretty hard in the year.
Just it's it's really important to get up and win
the collision in the year these days with know as
the rules have changed and you can't give any protection
to the catcher. It's a contests, so you've got to
be strong in the air. You've got to get higher
and be stronger than the opposition. And the Argentinian wingers
were outstanding tonight and and won all those contests. So mate,
(49:05):
it's a it's a must go forward that we must
be stronger in the air and we must win win
the possession from from those kicks.
Speaker 3 (49:13):
Have the back three that that started today. Rico Yuanni
severiese Will Jordan. Have they got that in their locker?
Are they able to make improvements there?
Speaker 18 (49:22):
Yeah? I think I think definitely they all are.
Speaker 32 (49:24):
Like I think you'll find a lot of the time
these days in the game, it's it's not necessarily a
wingers at times either that are under those high balls
with tens and fifteens in the backfield. So it's probably
more than more than the back three. It's it's specifically
tens and fifteen's a lot of the time when the Argentinians.
Argentinians were kicking to us tonight. So everybody here that
(49:45):
they have and we have to. You have to if
you want to be in the backfield, then we have
to be able to win those collisions, as simple as that.
Speaker 3 (49:51):
How concerning is it that you've been handed five yellow
cards and two games?
Speaker 32 (49:56):
Yeah, hugely, Like it's a it is how discipline needs
to be better when we're under pressure, and you know
a lot of the other things I've talked around Lee
so that as I said tonight and Nick Barry's rewards,
the team with the ball, and because of all those
other things that we've just talked around around our inaccuracies,
it means we spent a lot of time with doubt
(50:17):
it and that's what happens in the game these days,
so that has to You're not going to win. We're
not going to win two games against good opposition with
two yellow cards and as you say, five over over
the season.
Speaker 3 (50:30):
Is there a general understanding of the deliberate knock on
rule among the players? Do they know what they can
and can't do? Yeah, they do.
Speaker 32 (50:37):
They do in uh, you know, instinctive stuff they need
to We need to be better at it. We need
to make sure that you know, guys get if they
do it in training, they get sent off the field
with a little for yellow card for us at the moment.
So you know, that's been happening for a few weeks.
So now got to be better there too.
Speaker 3 (50:54):
Pinty and an attack Jason, what what what's your assessment
of the way you're playing with ball in hand from
from nine out at the moment?
Speaker 18 (51:04):
Ah?
Speaker 32 (51:05):
Yeah, Look, the there's a lot of execution stuff tonight
where you know, we wanted to spread the Argentinians and play.
Speaker 18 (51:12):
With a bit of WIT's somewhere.
Speaker 32 (51:14):
Execution around our line out, delivery and around our skill sets.
Didn't let us do that and so it became a battle.
We didn't get to play the style of footage that
we wanted to. So, yep, we've got to now some
skill sets to be able to allow us to use
the whole field, and that's it's got to be a
massive part of how we go forward.
Speaker 3 (51:32):
Does it feel disjointed to you? I mean, you're the
attack coach. Does it feel disjointed?
Speaker 32 (51:37):
They look disjointed tonight, Piney. I'll tell you that we
feel like we know how we want to play, and
we trained pretty well this week and got some real flow.
It felt like we had some real flow and how
we're going to play and how we're going to play
with some wits to open up the middle of the field.
But yep, I definitely looked disjointed tonight around our skill sets.
Speaker 3 (52:00):
You've shared the last four tests with Argentina too, wins
a piece over the last couple of years. What makes
the modern day pumas such a challenge jing opponent?
Speaker 32 (52:08):
Yeah, I think that's everybody's talked around. You give them
a sniff around a lot of the things we've talked
around in the last ten minutes, around giving them the ball,
getting them excited around opportunities around, you know, contests in
the year and those sorts of things, and they're hard
thing to stop. And with the passion of the of
the Argentinians, they're you know, you got to you gotta
(52:28):
be accurate and sort of stump them out.
Speaker 18 (52:30):
And that's what we didn't do tonight. Yeah.
Speaker 32 (52:34):
Yeah, you just got to make sure you don't give them,
give them anything to give them more energy than they
already have, and be accurate as Cortez.
Speaker 3 (52:43):
Okay, have you got any update for us there?
Speaker 18 (52:46):
Not sure yet? Not sure.
Speaker 32 (52:47):
He caught the pretty he caught the pretty good being
so I haven't seen yet. Now I haven't got anything
on any injury reports yet.
Speaker 3 (52:56):
And you don't know about about cam roy Guard yet.
You'll find it when you get home whether he might
be in the mix for South Africa.
Speaker 18 (53:03):
Ah, yeah, we'll find out when we get home.
Speaker 32 (53:05):
There'll be no doubt they'll be well to get medical
from this game tomorrow morning and before we get on
the plane and get updated early next week around some
of the boys.
Speaker 3 (53:15):
At home, all right, and the week ahead as you
get home, and then do you disperse, do do you
disperse for but come back together for South Africa? Or
do you stay together?
Speaker 32 (53:24):
Now we I think we get home at one o'clock
in the morning Tuesday morning, I think, and we're back
in on Saturday. So home for home for three days
pretty much for Tuesday wend, or four days Tuesday to
Friday and back in for the weekend.
Speaker 3 (53:37):
And it's probably this way comes to surprise to you.
There's you know, there a few people you know talking
about this performance back here. You know, what should we
be worried Jace? What you know, what's the what's the
you know, the strategy for turning things around here.
Speaker 32 (53:54):
Look, we'll obviously we'll massively unpack that pack that performance.
Speaker 18 (53:59):
You know, the cruxes we want to play.
Speaker 32 (54:01):
We want to play a style of footy that where
we can we can play use the ball and we
can spread teams then go through them.
Speaker 18 (54:08):
And at the moment, you know, we've got to.
Speaker 32 (54:10):
Look hard at how we what what our skill sets
are and how we're delivering that to make sure that
we play the way we are And yeah, well we'll
obviously be working really really hard on the way this
week to make sure that we can play the way
way we want to play when we play against South Africa.
Speaker 3 (54:26):
So you're tied to that strategy. You're all in on
that strategy. On what strategy is that the one that
you just talked about about spreading it wide, wanting to
play an expansive game, that sort of thing.
Speaker 18 (54:36):
Yes, yes, well we want to play. We want to
have a good balance in our game.
Speaker 32 (54:40):
You know, we need to be able to we're anybody
to use the whip, and obviously everybody knows if you
use the whip, that opens up the field a little
bit through the middle. So at the moment we're not
getting we're not getting the whips in our game. And yeah,
we need to be able to do that.
Speaker 3 (54:54):
I appreciate your time. Jace, Safe troubles back. We'll see
you back here.
Speaker 18 (54:58):
Thanks mate.
Speaker 3 (55:01):
Assistant coach of the All Blacks were one off, joining
us out of Buenos Aires not long after the Fall
Time Whistle twelve eighteen. It is Your thoughts are welcome,
and we had a lot of calls before midday opening
the lines again on eight hundred and eighty eighty. Before
we take your calls, we can get you back. Actually
to Buina series where a fairly familiar voice to a
(55:22):
z B and goldsportlesseners Paul Allison how Toneden based commentator
has been watching the game live. Paul, a fairly deflated
set of All Black supporters leaving the ground after the
final whistle.
Speaker 33 (55:35):
I think you've got to admit, Finey, that there was
really only one team in this game tonight, and it
was the Argentinians. They started well, I think you remember
an old Otago coach called Charlie Saxton. He talked about
the three p's. Well, we saw them in action tonight.
One was power with the Argentinian forwards, one was paced
with the Argentinian backs, and the third p was precisioned
because they just put that ball into the air and
(55:57):
they are absolutely pin point. We see the tango over here.
It takes two to tango. There's only one of them
dancing tonight, and it was the Argentinians.
Speaker 3 (56:05):
What about the aerial Paul, was it obvious from where
you were sitting that the All Blacks were not winning
the aerial battle?
Speaker 18 (56:13):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (56:14):
Absolutely, they weren't in the hunt.
Speaker 33 (56:15):
The accuracy of the up and unders that the Argentinians
put in were absolutely spot on, and they reclaimed most
of that aerial ball. And this is a part of
the game which I think the All Blacks have always
struggled with they've actually kicked too deep, not just tonight
but in previous matches as well, and haven't really been
in a position to contest that aerial ball. But the
Argentinian started with so much power in the forward pack,
(56:37):
with the one on off runners getting over the advantage line,
recycling the ball, and they just got the momentum going.
They looked a lot more hungry than the All Blacks,
and the All Blacks were pretty much on the back
foot from the kickoff. And although they got back to
thirteen all at half time, and you can talk about
the three yellow cards, the fact that they lost their
their star number tier and early in the match, and okay,
the All Blacks lost Radam early as well, but you
(56:58):
start to look at it, and this Argentinian side tonight
outplayed the All Blacks in just about every aspect in
my opinion.
Speaker 3 (57:04):
How was the atmosphere there as the home fans realized
that history was about to be made.
Speaker 2 (57:11):
Well, a few of us have.
Speaker 33 (57:12):
Been a few rugby grounds around the world, and this
is one of the special occasions. I mean, when the
Argentinians got the ball early, everyone that was supporting the Argentinians,
which would have been forty nine thousand out of the
forty nine thousand, five hundred capacity. Start jumping it up
and down on the ground, you think it's a little
mini earthquake going on around you. They're very passionate supporters.
I'm not sure how knowledgeable they are about rugby, but
(57:34):
in terms of the passion, you can just see that
coming out that there was a lot of noise around
the ground and as the Argentinians got on top, they
just the noise continued to continue on and even leaving
the ground tonight, they've got a fan zone outside the
playing the beetles of all things out there, and the
fans are It really is quite quite amazing, the very
(57:55):
joyous occasion for them. Obviously, they've set history, having never
beaten the All Blacks on home soil before, and they've
done it tonight, and they've done it in fine style.
Speaker 3 (58:03):
Just before you go and get a big stake and
something to wash it down with, Paul, should we be worried?
Should we be worried about the All Blacks with South
Africa inbound?
Speaker 33 (58:13):
Well, the All Blacks have looked clunky to me, I
predicted before I came over here to Argentina, that I
thought it might be a one all Test series and
the All Blacks won last week, and I thought that
might be the one that tripped them up, and I
thought that they would be better tonight. Also thought the
Argies would be as well. But I'm the only one
smiling in the bus going back amongst thirty five people
because I won the sweepstak. I had Argentina by five piney,
(58:34):
so I'm not doing too bad.
Speaker 3 (58:37):
Oh, well, you go and Luxury eight and that Paul,
Great to chat to your mate. Safe travels back, look
forward to to catching up when you get back home.
Paul Ellison on a bus leaving leaving one a Siri
Stadium to go and commiserate with his fellow All Blacks
fans who have been a born witness to some history
(58:58):
over on Buenos Airies, Argentina, betting the All Blacks for
the first time on Argentinian soil.
Speaker 10 (59:03):
Can I mark, hey, Piny, Yeah, bring back Art. Yes,
he's playing. He's playing vintage football on the wing for
the Warriors.
Speaker 3 (59:11):
You're out, Really, you're an out early No, I just.
Speaker 10 (59:15):
I just wanted to call him out because he's just playing.
He's probably one of the best in the NRL at
the moment. He's just great sportsman there, guys. Yeah, it's
incredible being put out in the wing and just absolutely
thriving out there at the moment.
Speaker 3 (59:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (59:30):
For me, I'm not a Rico hater. I thought he
was really good in midfield and to me, it was
a better team with him and Jordi here. And I
know I'm a Hurricane supporter, but I think he looked better.
I think there's better options on the wing for me,
and that has been great for a couple of years,
very solid.
Speaker 3 (59:50):
Who was who was that?
Speaker 8 (59:51):
Sorry?
Speaker 3 (59:52):
Mark, who was that?
Speaker 24 (59:52):
You just said?
Speaker 10 (59:54):
Narawa?
Speaker 3 (59:55):
Oh none of us? Sorry? Are you just cut out?
Speaker 16 (59:56):
Yep?
Speaker 3 (59:56):
No, no, what, No, you're right.
Speaker 10 (59:59):
Yeah, I think he's good. I mean, I wouldn't take
CV res. I think he's been hasn't really done too
much wrong really, I mean, I guess kateb Clark was
one of the few players who could actually catch the
ball when it was kicked into the ear, which is
quite surprising. I mean to me, you know, when they
brought in Ryan when they had problems with the Fords,
it was almost transformational. Maybe they need to look outside
(01:00:23):
the coaching staff and bringing a specialist I don't know
from the AFL to be able to get I mean,
all you need to get is a player to jump
and catch the ball. I mean, you see it in
rugby league was I don't know, coach Daniel Tupo. They're
fantastic in the air and they make a real difference.
I mean, I just don't understand the simplicity of it.
(01:00:44):
I mean, to me, why kick the ball in the
year if you haven't got a game plan to catch
it in game position. I mean, it's so much harder
like to get it to win a ball at a
ruck in rugby and modern rugby than it is to
win a ball in the year, So you'd be putting
your effort into this all the time. And I just
(01:01:05):
don't It just blows my mind every week. And I
think I've mentioned it for the the foul on like
a lot of a lot of players, you know, a
lot of people have been containing but it's just it's
just a complete disaster zone for them. And and you
know Russia has targeted this Eden Park test to be
to break the hoodoo of this, and they're going to
(01:01:27):
bring everything they've got, including the aerial game. And I
just don't think we're gonna I don't think we're going
to survive it, let alone. The Australians are playing well.
I thought, I just want to congratulate that the agent
in years. I thought they outplayed the or Blacks and
deserved to win.
Speaker 3 (01:01:44):
Good summary, Mark, thanks mate. Yeah, look the kicking. Yeah,
as you say, and it's and you're right to continue
to bring it up because the rules as they stand now,
as Jason Holland said, when you when you put up
a kick, you can challenge the receiver because you're not
allowed to run into ference anymore. You're not allowed to
(01:02:05):
sort of gather around that player and help them out
block any runners. It is an actual contest. It's one
major work on for this team ahead of South Africa.
And look they're aware of it. I didn't think Jason
Holland ducked any any you know, issues there. He said,
(01:02:26):
we're not. There's nothing out there that we're happy with.
We were disjointed on attack, we were beaten in the air.
I eight hundred and eighty ten eighty. Your chance to react.
We've got a spare line, I think for the first
time since full time. So if you haven't been able
to get through now's the time to give it a crack.
(01:02:47):
I eight hundred and eighty ten eighty A couple of
texts before we go back to the lines. Australia's backs
have speed on their wings, creative midfield, and they diffuse
the high ball. They beat the All Black's hands down
at the moment. Look, I think Australia after this morning's
performance in Cape Town, where they gave a pretty good
account of themselves before South Africa managed to win that game,
(01:03:08):
I think Australia will be coming back and they've got
Argentina coming their way. Of course, a couple of test
matches in Australia before they play US home and away.
I think they'll feel like they're on a pretty good
trajectory at the moment. Last week obviously was tremendous beating
the spring Box at Alice Park for the first time,
and Goodness only knows how long this morning they I think,
(01:03:32):
you know, I don't think they took too many steps back.
They had a couple of moments where perhaps they could
have been better and would maybe have even won the
game if they were. But yes, Australia, they'll said, they'll
be watching as well. The world is watching Anstrom. What
he said just keeps on coming back to me that
people will watch the way the All Blacks are struggling
(01:03:53):
under the high wall and they will construct a strategy
around it. The All Blacks, for their part, just have
to get better. They have to get better at it.
One hundred eighty two Mike, Hello mate.
Speaker 10 (01:04:08):
Yeah, gay mate, Jason, how are you good?
Speaker 3 (01:04:10):
Thank you?
Speaker 11 (01:04:11):
Mom?
Speaker 23 (01:04:12):
I heard Jason Ryan go on about the Orbles wanted
to play an expensive game, and all I want to
comment on that is the Orbock's played dumb, dumber and
dumbest rugby. How the hell do you play expensive rugby
when the half back box kicks, when you're down on
the points, You've got no position.
Speaker 34 (01:04:33):
I mean you look at the stats.
Speaker 23 (01:04:35):
When was the last test the All Blacks one where
they only had forty percent.
Speaker 3 (01:04:39):
Of the ball.
Speaker 23 (01:04:39):
They're never gonna win, never in a million years. In
the comments that South Africa is coming and so as Australia,
I reckon the All Blacks have got their backs against
the wall at Eden Park.
Speaker 3 (01:04:50):
Well, let's hope that the reaction to that, Mike is
as a positive one. You know, they often say there's
nothing like a wounded spring. Bark or a wounded wallaby
or probably a wounded poma. This is a wounded All
Blacks now, so I'm expecting a reaction. I think we
all should expect a reaction.
Speaker 23 (01:05:07):
Yeah, I think one hundred percent. But the other thing
I said to my partner when we were watching the
postgame show Things, when Cody Taylor was on the stand,
he looked straight at the reporter Scott Robinson. His eyes
are all over the show, and it's almost like they
don't have answers to the problems. And if they've worked
on this all week, and they and they work on
a problem all week and they produce a performance like that,
(01:05:28):
a man that's got your worries.
Speaker 3 (01:05:31):
Thanks Mike, I appreciate your call. Drive Save twelve twenty
eight lines continue to be open, although they fill up
as quickly as they open, So give it a crack.
Aj Hello, Yeah, Getty.
Speaker 7 (01:05:42):
Fine, I'm going to come off the big thing. And
I think did they make it good? I don't think
all Black backplay has been good under this coachy, Raine, mate.
I think we've one backwards Idall Foster in the last
three years for Joe Smith, and that might be something
as well that we had a back coach that knew
what he was doing. Mate, I don't think we've got
back coaches there at the moment they were doing. I'd
(01:06:02):
have either Reuben Love or probably better at full back,
and I had Little Drawer on the wing, and I'd
had Leroy Chounter on the other wing.
Speaker 18 (01:06:10):
Mate.
Speaker 7 (01:06:11):
You know you look at me, mum will cup back
and through the other eleven. The high ball was the
previous two years, the kicking to the high ball, and
we're what you gave hear me doing. They picked the
guy up and named Richter CARHOI who was the best
on the high ball, Say Corey, Corey Dane another winger,
I fall back. This is what we need to do, mate.
I'm not thinking propably this coaching group at the moment.
I'm pussed top about it.
Speaker 3 (01:06:34):
Hey, Jake, and I know I'm gonna keep I'm gonna
keep you on it because I want to hear more.
But I think you know the Ruben Loved one's interesting,
not the biggest guy, but a fullback, very brave and
good under the high ball.
Speaker 21 (01:06:44):
So if he looking to yeah, he's probably.
Speaker 7 (01:06:47):
The best player. And that all the tea that takes
the high ball and nine time out of ten he
catches it, you know. And also I don't think we
can go. I love vating Barrett and I thought he
was outstanding in the first half this morning. But we
can't have a goal kick out. There's only kicking sixty
percent of the all back Test sectors that just look
at pull out this morning, mate, Dodgies would have won
that match that they had had a goal and nothing
(01:07:09):
game to Connor, I thought they were really unlucky to
lose that game this morning. But at the moment, as
I sit to you, producer Andy McDonald's, at the moment,
I don't think the all back with Victor Wallabies at
the moment, but we're we're looking. I was so pumped
up there coming to Auckland and went to the watch
the all back. But at the moment they need they
need to have a card and harder themselves. And I
had to say that it was probably with kissed back
(01:07:29):
of Saint Scott Barrett played this morning. Yeah, he wants
to get some gruel and tends. Man, he dropped on ball.
Speaker 21 (01:07:34):
That's more.
Speaker 7 (01:07:34):
It's terrible, you know, the middal assistant all day to
go by feeling in my opinion.
Speaker 3 (01:07:39):
Yep, AJ don't don't let this stop you from coming
to Auckland and Wellington, because I'm keen to meet you
at our pregame shows. Oh, one hundred and eighty ten
eighties and I'm a half fast twelve back in a moment,
Gareth hold their mate with you.
Speaker 1 (01:07:51):
Right after this one, crutch hold Engage Weekend Sport with
Jason Hym and GJ Gunner Homes New Zealand's was trusted
Home Milder News talk to.
Speaker 5 (01:08:02):
Baby Well, I didn't see it two meters away, pick
and go bearing down on the line and they're over Argentina.
Get that right, and it's converted as well as from
the left wing titis line side and we aren't level
thirteen a piece.
Speaker 3 (01:08:20):
Yeah, that was a half time score. The Puma's going
on to win twenty nine twenty three. Thanks for holding Garris,
Good afternoon.
Speaker 15 (01:08:28):
Good afternoon, Pining. I appreciate you show. It's always a
good one. I guess I agree with everyone's summation. There's
a whole lot of work on. But I guess what
I was disappointed with was just our inability to react
to what was going wrong. So obviously the aerial game
was an issue, but then, like a couple of people
have mentioned, we continued to box kick and we continued
(01:08:49):
to put trips over and stuff. So if that's not
going right, why wouldn't you change tacks? And like I thought,
I saw a stat leading into halftime that would run
all our own line out ball. Why wouldn't you kick
for the corner and try and get a driving all going?
Like I thought, Fabian Holland and Cody Taylor played a
really good game and then when it really mattered, we
(01:09:10):
pulled them off. And I just thought those two subs,
we had a couple of false starts at the lineouts
when we really needed it. I get that the crowd
noise might have been an issue, but I just you know,
I'm worried about our rugby intelligence more than the actual
technical side of it, because I think that can be fixed.
But I think there was no one out there who
took the game by the hand. Did this needs to change?
(01:09:33):
We're going to do this this, We're going to slow
down for the next five to ten minutes, get back
in the game. And yeah, I don't know what you
think of that, but.
Speaker 3 (01:09:40):
No, I think you bang on the money. Gareth I
think the ability to think in game on the field
when all about you was pretty hectic and chaotic is
an absolute skill that the leaders in this team should have.
Bang on, mate, they should they should say, hey, this
ain't working, so we're going to go to Plan B
and here it.
Speaker 15 (01:09:58):
Is exactly and like, if we're not going to fix
the aerial game in the next couple of weeks, which
I don't think we can necessarily fix to be a
team like South Africa or Australia. Granted I do have
a cele Afrian wife, so it gets a bit heated
in our household. But I think if we've got a
skill that's not as good as them, why don't we
go to something else? And I think I'll line out
(01:10:19):
out of everything and our scrum are functioning reasonably well,
So find something that we're doing well and use it
as much as we possibly can, because I think at
the moment, anything outside second five is just not working.
Speaker 3 (01:10:33):
Mate. If I never see another box kick again, I'll
be happy. And you're right, I mean, if the aerial
game isn't working, I mean, we can't stop the opposition
from bombing us. That's their prerogative, that's what they have
to do. We just have to be ready for it.
But if we're not winning contestable ball from our own
box cakes, then you're right by just stop doing it.
Speaker 15 (01:10:52):
I'd love to know how the percentage of I'd love
to know what the percentage that we got those attacking
box kicks back. But if it's not working, change the game.
And I think unfortunately, I think Body Barrett had a
bad night with the b which is a rarity and
normally that would have kept us in the game. But
I think that's just glossing over bigot issues that really
(01:11:14):
need to be fixed. And I think we're going through
a period where we don't have the luxury of depth
where if someone's playing badly, we can just boot them
because there's not a whole lot of people waiting in
the wings. So we've got to come up with a plan.
Speaker 3 (01:11:27):
B Indeed, interesting few weeks coming up in your place
mate with you, yourself and your wife. No doubt you'll
negotiated safely enough.
Speaker 15 (01:11:36):
Yeah, I'm feeling a bit exhausted getting up this morning
watching sasty game.
Speaker 7 (01:11:40):
But there was just way better quality rugby.
Speaker 15 (01:11:42):
Like I was watching that game and I was on
the edge of my seat the whole game and then
this game. I just it was just a painful watch
from twenty minutes.
Speaker 3 (01:11:49):
In great to chet you Gareth, make callback anytime, love
love your input. Thanks indeed, oh eight one hundred and
eighty ten eighty as always as our number, Graham High,
how are you going?
Speaker 15 (01:11:59):
Serve you well?
Speaker 3 (01:12:00):
Very well? Thank you?
Speaker 13 (01:12:02):
Yeah, little slightly controversial, but I think the problem's been
around for a while. These enormous, bloated squads that we
take on two, right, and if you look at the
makeup of the side, and I'll justify this beginning of
some call brothers, but I'm a generic rugby fan. I'll
just watch a good game at rugby. I'm not partial
to any super franchise. Right, there's far too many Chiefs
(01:12:24):
players who are serial losers. That's they've been favorite four
of the last five Super Rugby finals. I can't close
the game out ther whole bench is made up of
Kiefs players. So do we expect anything different at the
end of the game.
Speaker 3 (01:12:36):
That is controversially, Graham, I'm not sure that there's necessarily
a losing mindset. And the Chiefs, yes, they've lost three
grand time.
Speaker 13 (01:12:44):
I agree that, right, but they just don't when they
can't get across the line in big games. So you
know when you bring on an round play with Quintapaia
and Damian McKenzie. These guys have been around long time,
the Chiefs, but they can't close out a big game.
Speaker 3 (01:12:59):
It's an interesting viewpoint. No, no, it's a good thought.
All thoughts welcome, Graham. And the data would say that
you're right on the bench. Docky a hal lord s
Titi Topia McKenzie. So five on the bench there. Okay,
I'm not sure about the correlation you've drawn it. I'm
not sure about it, but it's certainly a salient point
(01:13:20):
to raise. All opinions. Welcome on the show, as you know, Graham.
Speaker 15 (01:13:24):
David, Hello, you know Jason, how are you?
Speaker 3 (01:13:27):
I'm all right, David, I'm all right mate.
Speaker 35 (01:13:29):
Good will you'd be shaping up for the football season
coming up, of course, but looking forward to it exactly
and hope the phoenix ever been a year. But look
my opinion anyway, thought's with there was no attack with
all them bested the Warriors for no attack the last
four weeks, or at least they showed some last night,
(01:13:49):
But to me, there was no attack. It was timid.
Speaker 9 (01:13:52):
It was petsy.
Speaker 35 (01:13:53):
It was almost like Chloe Swallbook getting up and asking
the Prime Minister a question. There was more attack coming
from there from her than there wasn't any of our
movements this morning. It was shocking. It was so passive
that it was here. Well, it was my opinions anyway.
Speaker 2 (01:14:10):
You know, at the tries.
Speaker 3 (01:14:12):
Yeah, I look at the tries that we scored, David,
and you know, a prop going over in the corner.
To be fair, I thought that was, you know, that
had the sort of the makings of a good back
line move. And Will Jordan's throwing the wild cut out
pass and you know, Fletch and you're going over in
the corner. Billy Propter though from a you know, from
(01:14:33):
a a lot was sort of drive close to the
line and then Tokiyahu with a rolling wall. You know,
we used to pride ourselves, didn't we on on flowing
back line moves and and making space for the outsides
and centers who could set up our wingers in our
full back in space. And yeah that look, I know,
I know, defenses these days are a lot, you know,
(01:14:54):
a lot more refined in terms of the way they
they do their research and things like that. But yeah,
flowing back line moves just don't seem to be a
quality that we possess necessarily at the moment.
Speaker 35 (01:15:05):
I'll tell you there's one good thing get out of
us at least this year's Rugby Championship is actually no
one knows who's going to win it yet and so
there is actually something to sit and watch the damned thing,
which makes it a little bit more endurable than the
average one that's either of the All Blacks or South Africa.
At least Australia has got a chance of winning the
damn thing this year.
Speaker 3 (01:15:25):
Indeed, Look that's it, And I think if you don't
have any skin in the game, then I think you're
pleased about it, the fact that there's there's some genuine competition.
I just mixed up those tries, didn't I The try
to Proctor was the one that Jordan threw it wired
to Rico, quick ball from Christy to Proctor who went
over the Fletcher and your one was actually set up
by Simon Parker and save coming into play half back.
(01:15:47):
But yeah, that you know, and I know defenses are
up quickly, of course they are. They they spot trouble
quickly and don't give you space. But yeah, I don't know,
they just there was it was disjointed. Jason Holland himself
admitted it this morning nineteen to one. We'll take a break, Glenn,
(01:16:10):
I'm with you right after the spear line if you
want to jump on. We're talking all blacks till one.
Warriors after one, Pugs says on ticks piney, when are
we going to talk about the warriors?
Speaker 27 (01:16:18):
Up?
Speaker 3 (01:16:19):
The was Pugs eat straight after one? Stacy Jones going
to take our call. Then we'll talk to warriors, but
all blacks until one o'clock on eight hundred and eighty
ten eighty.
Speaker 2 (01:16:27):
You be the TMO and yours say.
Speaker 1 (01:16:29):
On eight hundred and eighty ten eighty Weekend Sport with
Jason Pain and GJ. Guvnerholmes, New Zealand's most trusted home
builder News Talks, they'd be calld it to one.
Speaker 36 (01:16:39):
Hey Glenn, Hey, hey poney, geez. There was a tough
watch this morning. A lot of it was to go through.
But I'm just try and pick a few. And I'll
start off by saying that I am absolutely die hard
Crusaders fan, but I just can't see any improvement in
this team since Robertson has taken over, and I think
(01:17:02):
he'd make a great politician, because the guy never answered
the question. He always talks in circles or riddles or
makes it choke like he's just I don't know.
Speaker 16 (01:17:11):
I don't get it.
Speaker 36 (01:17:12):
As the heavens, it's really frustrating me. But on the team,
the facts just don't look no cohesion. They don't seem
to know what to do, which is astounding considering the
quality of the players on the box kicks. The box
kicks is great if it's contestable, but ours hardly ever are,
whereas there's always seemed to be same with the kickoff
(01:17:34):
at halfway. Theirs is always contestable and fifty to fifty
we lose it. We kick off, we kick it a
long and there's no conky for them to get the
ball back. They just get it round up a bit
and then.
Speaker 37 (01:17:47):
Kick it back down to us.
Speaker 36 (01:17:49):
As I don't know. There was just such a frustrating watch. Forwards,
we talk about site well, we talk about wanting to
play a quick game, but then we pick a FOURD
pack which doesn't offer that. There's no mobility in the
facts three. I don't know, Man, we've got two weeks
until we're probably going to lose the Ian Park record.
(01:18:11):
But man, I really hope that they turn it around.
And if they picked pretty much the same game, I
might't have a massive issue with it because I don't
know who else they can possibly bring in and they
don't have any time to do it. Do you say
to this team, it's on you, guys, like you've got
to turn it around and give them that chance. But
moving forward and going into the World Cup, man, we
have got some problems.
Speaker 3 (01:18:33):
Yeah, I think I have to do that, Glenn for
this next test. I don't like, as I said a
little while ago, they're out of time. They're basically all
in on this team. I wouldn't imagine that there would
be too many changes. They might look at something perhaps,
I mean, I think so Tet will come into the
starting side. I think that's one thing they'll do before
Yeah to mighty yep, the other one yep.
Speaker 10 (01:18:55):
And they've got to start.
Speaker 36 (01:18:58):
Jordan is absolutely our fallback, like he's World Cup player.
One bad game doesn't change that. But the guy had
no support. No one else was taking box skips. He
was the only one coming forward. Whether or not that
was the plan, I don't know, but usually you see
like wingers trying to help out as well, but didn't see.
Speaker 23 (01:19:17):
Any of that.
Speaker 3 (01:19:19):
I've enjoyia summary, Glenn. Thanks mate. Let's chat again when
South Africa get here and we can reassess. I still
think they'll want an Eden Park. I actually think they'll
win that test match. I think there's so much emotion
wrapped around it. It'll be Ardi's one hundredth not that
it mattered with Cody's this morning, but I think they'll
win at eden Park. Whether they can win both as
a very different story. And there's a lot of work
to do, and yeah, and what have we Now? We're
(01:19:41):
in you know, we're midway in a World Cup cycle.
I'm almost certain that severa Reese and Rico Yowani won't
be starting on the wins in the opening game for
the All Blacks at the next World Cup. Wally, Hello,
Hey May, how's the game good? Thank you?
Speaker 38 (01:19:59):
Hey.
Speaker 39 (01:19:59):
Look, I'd like to say one thing the way the
game is going, what's happened to the age minute footballer?
What's all of these reserves and replacements and everything.
Speaker 13 (01:20:08):
I'm losing whole contexts of the game after half time?
Speaker 39 (01:20:11):
Yeah, what is this pleasant team that they put?
Speaker 3 (01:20:14):
Only you won't get an argument from me, mate, you
might get an argument from me, especially around guys like halfbacks.
It seems as though they have to change the halfback.
It's almost compulsory now game. Yeah, carry on, Well it
looked like.
Speaker 39 (01:20:27):
Last week if you're talking about half packs.
Speaker 8 (01:20:29):
But and I'm sorry best Scott Buried, I don't think.
Speaker 11 (01:20:31):
He's out keptain.
Speaker 39 (01:20:32):
You gotta get sorted, young mother like the tit. Give
him a shot, make.
Speaker 35 (01:20:36):
Him to captain.
Speaker 15 (01:20:38):
Yeah, just change it.
Speaker 39 (01:20:39):
We need a young young foller andeer and ad him
in a footballer and that's what we need.
Speaker 18 (01:20:47):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (01:20:47):
Can't doubt your passion, Wally, can't doubt your passion. And look,
we all know it's a twenty three men game now
and a lot of us learned for the old days
when you you know, you just stayed out there, didn't you.
But I still think there's a case a lot of
the time for if if a halfback is playing well,
like Roy Guard, leave him on good to chat while
(01:21:07):
we got to move.
Speaker 40 (01:21:07):
Hey Gary, Yeah, good afternoon.
Speaker 20 (01:21:12):
Do you get the New Zealand Herald?
Speaker 18 (01:21:14):
I do yes?
Speaker 40 (01:21:16):
On the Wednesday the twentieth, Gregor Paul wrote, all Blacks, yes,
yet to justify number one rank unless they beat the box.
But these words have proved most prophetic. We aren't number
one absolute exhibition overnight, but I put it down to this,
the lime green boots.
Speaker 17 (01:21:38):
Weird were hell did come from Hey to beat them?
Speaker 40 (01:21:45):
We're known as all black? Why not we're all black boots.
Speaker 3 (01:21:49):
I knew some of was going to bring that up today, Gary, Sorry, man,
I knew someone was going to say something about the
boots today. There's all these I mean, whenever the all
Blacks lose, there's all sorts of theories coming boots. Oh,
they spending much time on the haka. They spent too
much time on social media. Yeah. I don't think these
things are at play. The boots are clearlyas thing. Otherwise
they wouldn't wear them. Thanks Gary, Just on the on
(01:22:10):
the razor media persona thing. I just wanted to touch
on that from the earlier caller. I think he's definitely
changed from the way he was when he was crusaders coach.
When he was Crusader's coach, he was he was very happy,
go lucky and and really good in the media and quirky,
(01:22:30):
and he'd throw you something that was a bit different.
I just think, for whatever reason, he's just being a
bit more cautious as All Blacks coach and and I
think he's almost caught between his personality and what he
thinks the All Blacks coach diuld sound like that's just
an observation because he used to be so good in
media situations. It's almost like he's just, oh, it's a
bit more serious now, doesn't have to be rich. Hello,
(01:22:53):
how are you going good?
Speaker 34 (01:22:55):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (01:22:56):
Look, I can't believe today's game. How I was absolutely
in shock as to how they how they All Blacks
play today, And it's been it's been ongoing for the
last number of years and that. But when Scott Robinson
first came into the side a few years ago or
I thought everything.
Speaker 15 (01:23:14):
Was going to change.
Speaker 8 (01:23:16):
The Crusaders were adventurous, were expansive, hard working on the ball.
That seems to have gone now now we're sort of
going back to the kick and trace of the box kick.
I just can't understand the frustration I feel with watching that.
We went to that in the first couple of minutes.
I just can't understand where we're coming where that's all
(01:23:38):
come about from Regie.
Speaker 3 (01:23:41):
I think you're not. You're not the only one scratching
their head, my friend, You're not the only one who's
Who's I think worried or a little bit maybe confused
that that right, that you're right after a year and
a half near enough with their hands on the squad,
that that where where we are now. We're in a
point where we've just lost to Argentina for the first
time in Argentina, We've got a couple of test matches
(01:24:02):
against South Africa, which at best I think most of
us would feel PESSI stick about, and you know, in
the middle of a World Cup cycle, there is still
time because we'll be judged well, these coaches will on
what happens in two years time. But yeah, I think
you probably land on a pretty good point that a
lot of us thought that we would be in a
different place twenty tests into the regime of Razor.
Speaker 8 (01:24:26):
We seem to be very fragile.
Speaker 15 (01:24:29):
I just or we just don't seem to be.
Speaker 8 (01:24:31):
I can't remember in today's game whether I saw a
backline move, I can't remember it happened. It all seemed
to be from scattered ball. We just seems to be
in two minds our tactics. We need to get rid
of the box keep. I think we're just we're using
We're over using it too much. It's just so frustrating.
Speaker 3 (01:24:49):
Yeah, Rich, You're not the only one frustrated. Thanks for
you call. Seven to one Used Talks.

now really looking forward to for an all Blacks response
against the box at the Garden in a couple of weeks.

(01:26:04):
We're a couple of weeks away from that massive time

We'll be doing the show that day, incidentally, from the Kingslander,
which is a bar not far from Eden Park, So
I'd love for you to stop in and see us
if you are in and around the area. But yeah, well,
(01:26:27):
well we'll put the All Blacks off to one side
for this afternoon because there are other things to discuss.
In an hour or so, we want to talk Rugby
World Cup and the Black Ferns first game Spain tomorrow morning.
Kendrick Coxsage has won the Rugby World Cup three times.
She's gonna have a chat to us. We'll get to
we'll get to Shield Country, Shield Country. Hamilton incredible finish
(01:26:51):
to that game yesterday, blemisopol Langa kicking the penalty which
took the log back to Hamilton to the the light.
No doubt of cow bell waving Mulu fans. We can
open the lines to you if you like it after
after two. I want to talk to American Sport as
well James mcconey this hour, but I want to start
(01:27:13):
with what happened on the Gold Coast yesterday. The Warriors
get around it.
Speaker 6 (01:27:20):
Top four, Top four, the ree.
Speaker 2 (01:27:23):
Game winning form.
Speaker 3 (01:27:24):
They've won back to back weeks. There are two weeks.
Speaker 7 (01:27:28):
Away for the top four finighs to Warriors.
Speaker 41 (01:27:33):
Not their best win of the season, but at this
end of the year, there's so much to play for.
Speaker 6 (01:27:40):
Get through, put the points of the beach and march
on the next week.
Speaker 41 (01:27:44):
Full time Warriors thirty two the Titans eighty Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:27:50):
A vintage performance from Roger to Ivasascheck has helped propel
the Warriors to that thirty two to eighteen win over
the Titans. He scored two of the warriors five tries,
allowing them to snap a three game losing streak against
the Titans, who inexplicably had been become a bit of
a bogie team. For the Warriors, it also consolidates their
(01:28:11):
spot in the top four and keeps their destiny in
their own hands with two games to play before the playoffs. Now,
I'm not sure if this was certain before yesterday, but
the Warriors now cannot fall out of the top eight.
They will be playing playoff football. That might have been
the case even before they kicked off last night, but
as I look at the table, they cannot be overtaken
(01:28:31):
in the top eight now. So we've got that locked away.
But the top four will well and truly still be
in their sights. Ken to open the lines and hear
from you Warriors fans, but the team is about to
fly out back to Auckland. Assistant coach Stacy Jones is
on the line stage. Congratulations on the win last night
as you wait to fly back. What stands out most
(01:28:52):
about the win and about the performance from your team
last night?
Speaker 34 (01:28:55):
Oh yeah, hey, Jasons, Yeah. Look, I thought we look
pretty clinical with our attack, especially out on the edges,
and we scored some nice tries. I thought, you know,
our two edges kick chased really well, brock Aberry leading
the leading the way on our right side and capable
on the left side, and the boys went well with them.
And then you know we forced you know Gold Coast
(01:29:17):
to kick deep with them there in their half and
our backfield, we were able to get some really good momentum.
So there are two sort of pleasing parts of our game.
And then defense, I thought, you know, we apart from
him scoring in the first few minutes, I thought we
held our line pretty well for the most and you know,
they were they looked threatening when you know they put
early kicks and behind us, and and maybe when they
(01:29:40):
got an offload on us. But all in all, I thought,
you know, we defended, defended really well.
Speaker 3 (01:29:44):
The halves combo, Chanelle and Tanner, the general play they're kicking,
their partnership with one another. Do you reckon that was
their best performance together this season?
Speaker 18 (01:29:55):
Yeah?
Speaker 34 (01:29:55):
Possibly, Jason. I you know, I haven't quite looked at
the game closer enough you'd've watched half of it, but
you know, they both complemented each other really well. I
thought Tanner voids long long kicking game was spot on,
and you know, Chanelle came up for a couple of
nice touches too. So you know, having a left footed
kicker and a right footed kicker certainly gives you some
(01:30:17):
good options.
Speaker 3 (01:30:18):
How big a player is Roger Tivaisi check for you.
Speaker 34 (01:30:22):
Yeah, look, he certainly you know, he founder found a
place from south there on the left wing, and you
know he's really focused on what he wants and he's
a good thing about him. You know, he's gone after
the game, you know, when you know the Titans were
kicking the ball back going, attitude was one that was
getting a lot of a lot of benefits. And he
certainly gets our sets going. And then you know when
we kick the ball, he come up to a nice
(01:30:42):
play where he tested the ball and got a tap
back and Adam went over and scored. So but Rogers,
you know, I think for the last sort of ten
weeks he's been one of our best players.
Speaker 3 (01:30:53):
Can you talk also face about the development and the
progress that you're seeing in your younger players?
Speaker 34 (01:30:59):
Yeah, yeah, really good. You know, I was just sitting
here with Web and we're talking about some of the
young kids and what you know they're output in the game,
is you Tanna Sto was starting, you know and getting
some really good minutes and then the Metric and Lekuer
and Eddie year a Mia come on and then they
players that you know, they've got good insts on them
in particular Tanner and Eddie and Lecker and Dimitric. We
(01:31:23):
know about their power and strength, but the other two,
you know, they played big minutes. And you know we
losing jackson Ford last night all sorry last week for
a few weeks, you know, we thought it can be
a big loss. But I thought Eddie and Tanner really
stood up and took places what Jacko usually does for
us in.
Speaker 3 (01:31:42):
Terms of the work ons. Do you do you look
at the lake the two late crist You can see
it even though the game was signed up by by
the end, do you look at that?
Speaker 34 (01:31:49):
Yeah? Look, yeah, you know we do. You know that
was disappointing parts of the game cross but you know
that's a gold Coast can do. And we knew that
they were going to move the board, get off loads
and kick early on us, and you know, and it
came off of them. You know, they're they're risky players,
but they had to do something. But yeah, we're probably
there's a moment now I thought we were. We had
them on the ropes and we might have thrown a
(01:32:09):
loose part and they got and got momentum down the
other end. So that was the pointy part because we
could have possible and scored a few more points.
Speaker 3 (01:32:17):
Did the recent record against the Titans get talked about
it all in the build up to last night?
Speaker 34 (01:32:22):
Not at all, No, No, not at all. Yeah, we
just sort of processed for them with what we need
to do. You know, I think you know, they only
probably talk around that was probably what you know, you
guys were saying the media and all of that, you know,
outside noisy, but we never mentioned all within our group.
Speaker 3 (01:32:39):
And I don't know how many key Wes live on
the Gold Coast, but I think most of them must
have been there last night. How was the crowd? It
was like a home game.
Speaker 34 (01:32:46):
It was unreal. Yeah, it was like a home game.
It felt like Yeah, Mount Smart or Go Mediate was
was unreal the what we had and yeah, boys really
really loved it and it was a great, great place
to the last night.
Speaker 3 (01:33:01):
All right, just to finish. Top four remains in your
own hands. How does the week week ahead look for
you as you as you prepare for Parameta?
Speaker 34 (01:33:10):
Yeah, look, big day tomorrow for us. Tuesday off boys
for freshing up, and then we focused on Parameta. So
we've we've sort of got to look at review last
last performance. Tomorrow and then yeah, crack on, but Paramta
playing some really really good footing, so they're going to
be it's gonna be a tough game for us. But
(01:33:31):
you know, we know that, you know, if we put
together a performance, we want to be in the top four.
So it's in our ends.
Speaker 3 (01:33:39):
All right, have a relaxing flight home, Stace, thanks for taking.
Speaker 9 (01:33:42):
Our call mate pleasures.
Speaker 34 (01:33:43):
Thanks, no, thanks, no, thank you.
Speaker 3 (01:33:45):
Stacy, Stacy Jones, their assistant coach of the Warriors. All right,
Warriors fans, let's hear from you are eight hundred and
eighty ten eighty. Now do we feel like a top
four side? Over the last couple of weeks? I know
there have been doubts. It's been a bit creaky. The
win last week over the Dragons kind of steadied things,
didn't it. But off the back of those losses to
the Titans ironically Dolf Bulldogs, it was just a little
(01:34:09):
bit shaky, wasn't it. Now back to back over the
Dragons and the Titans last night. Let's not worry about
how we'll go once we get there. Let's not worry
about that for the moment. Let's talk about getting there
the top four. It's tantalizingly close. Now as things stand,
two games to go, Warriors, you get two points for
a win. Let's just make that clear. Warriors thirty four points,
(01:34:33):
Sharks thirty two, Panthers thirty one, Broncos thirty. Now they've
got one more game to play. They visit Newcastle this afternoon,
so come on the nights Roosters twenty eight. So the
top four equation for the Warriors is starting to simplify itself.
Win both of their remaining games and they're in that
is that is certain. So it's in their own hands.
(01:34:55):
Beat the Eels on Friday night and the Sea Eagles
away the following weekend and they're in the top four.
Or win one of those games, while Cranulla and Bruce
been both lose at least once and they're in the
top four as well. So that's a that's an if scenario.
(01:35:15):
But I think that the simple equation has just win
both the games. Just win both the games. Are the
other thing I've written down before we go to the lines,
I think I wrote down as I watching that game
last night, I just wrote down on my notepad, how
good is Roger to Varsa shek My god, what a
player he's been when there's been injury and unavailability and
(01:35:37):
inconsistency and shuffling of players around. Roger to Varsa Shek
has just absolutely stood up and that number five jersey
for the Warriors. He is the epitome of leadership. And
I'm loving the way he's playing, not just the tries
(01:35:57):
he scored, but that contesting the ball in the air.
We talked about the All Blacks not contesting that well
in the air. Roger contesting in the air in the
second half, knocking it back and leading to the try
that Adam Pompey scored. Roger Tivasask can still play man
even at thirty two.
Speaker 38 (01:36:13):
Hello Ellen, Yeah, good afternoon, Jason. Look, just briefly on
to Vasishek, I was going to talk about something else.
I think that you have to also take into account
that Roger is playing not playing in his preferred position.
Most of his NRL career has been at fullback. But
(01:36:33):
he is such a he is such a good player
that he can adapt pretty readily. I don't think that
he's one of these people that's going to wind up
in the forwards. I think that he's getting a bit
older now of course, but he still maintains his speed,
but his knowledge of the game and his league intelligence
(01:36:57):
was right up there with the best of them. And
it just shows that he can go into a his
not preferred position and do so well. Look what I
wanted to talk about was Tavida Harris. Now, he did
such a great job on Jaden Campbell last night. Jaden
Campbell is the Titans strike player, He's the go to guy,
(01:37:22):
and Harris just got in his face and tackled him
and put him down. And he made very very little
yardage at all whole game, and it was mainly Tavida
Harris that just turned up on him and put him down.
And that's not an easy feat to do. We all
know how good Jaden Campbell is. I mean, we've seen it.
(01:37:43):
He is a brilliant, brilliant runner, and he's a great attacker,
and Tavida Harris just shut him down. Since he's come
back from his trip, I believe he's matured enormously in
his league intelligence and I think he really now he
seems to know exactly what he's going to do and
(01:38:04):
why he's going to do it, and where he got
that quick ball out to Adam Pompey last night. A
great piece of improvisation. He knew where Pompey was and
he got the ball out to him in a flash.
And I just thought, along with a lot of other
Warriors last night who all played well, I thought he
was one of the standouts, along with Turvarsas Shek And
(01:38:27):
the other thing I did want to say, Jason, is
that it just shows when we get some of our
first stringers back how good we can be Cape Kirkwell and.
Speaker 3 (01:38:40):
Barry Y Hardly hardly.
Speaker 18 (01:38:43):
Yeah, yeah, he has.
Speaker 38 (01:38:45):
Been genuinely missed. I believe you talk about Turvarsi Sheck
condesting a catch. Look what Buried did the whole game.
Soon as the ball went up from us, He's just
followed that ball. I would have liked to have seen
two or three other Warriors doing the same thing. But
he achieved a lot by doing that because he kept
them under pressure. He's just such a good center, and
(01:39:09):
he's sort of come from a well, sort of a
rugby background, I suppose. I don't believe that he's never
played rugby league before he came to the Warriors, but
he's such a good player. He looks everybody says how
strong he is. He doesn't look like he's overly big guy.
He's obviously one of these wiry characters. But my goodness me,
(01:39:32):
can he play and can he defend? And it was
such an authoritative display yesterday by the Warriors, particularly the
first Haarriff. They literally controlled that game for sixty five minutes,
and I mean controlled it, and they just kept a
team that's supposed to be their bogie team that just
kept them quiet. I think it was a great display.
Speaker 3 (01:39:53):
And a great summary from you, Ellen. I've got nothing
to add. I agree about Chanelle Harris Devita. You know
the fact that he found Pompy with that past, but
also it was his kick. It was his kick that
he put up, and you can see how delighted he
was afterwards. And yea rocket, Harry. I know they've had
players out and there are still players out metcalf and
and you know Jackson Ford's now out for a week while,
(01:40:16):
and you know they've they've really missed some players in
this team, Mitch Barnett obviously, but Roccoberrett. They just look
so much better with Roco out there, don't they so
much better? Thanks? Ellen, appreciate your call very much. Hello, Greg.
Speaker 9 (01:40:31):
After Nion Jason.
Speaker 3 (01:40:35):
H gotch a deep in take of breath before before
you made your point there.
Speaker 9 (01:40:42):
Greg, Well, I might be going to sound a little
bit negative this afternoon, but the team they were playing
are the bottom of the ladder. Now, the expectation from
anybody who has a team that are in the top
four would be that they would walk all over the
(01:41:03):
bottom place team. And I know that the Titans are
our bogie team. But for all the good that the
Warriors did yesterday, there was those two tries at the
end of the game which they left in, which you
should never do if you're any team, basically, but top
(01:41:24):
fourteen versus bottom team, that should never have happened. Now,
I'm going to make a statement that it is not
our year. And the reason why I say that is
I watch the two games on Friday night and I
feel that the Warriors are just not in those four
(01:41:45):
teams ballpart. Those four teams are so professional, they have
everything worked out to the letter, and I don't think
that the Warriors are at there that level yet. I
think maybe given one or two years time, with all
(01:42:06):
the young guys that are coming through, and we all
do go on about you know, the young talent that's coming. Well,
yeah it's coming, but it's not there yet. So yeah,
that's my cup and tape any worth for today.
Speaker 3 (01:42:20):
Now, Greg, I like it. I just want to ask
a couple of questions. I think I don't think you'll
get an argument from anybody listening. I think you look
at the you look at the table, or you look
at the teams and Raiders, Storm, Bulldogs, Panthers, the teams
that you mentioned there who played on Friday night, I
think you're right there are they are there are a
cut above. The rest. Fact of the matter is though
(01:42:40):
that if the Worries when the last two games, you
know they'll be in the top four, and one of
those teams won't be probably the Panthers. The other part
about it is that, yeah, you're betting the Titans. It
shouldn't be, you know, sung from the rooftops because they
are bottom. But then I watched the Eels play the
Roosters last night. He's the Roosters, you know, knocking around
the top eight, and the Eels did a job on them.
Speaker 9 (01:43:02):
Yeah, the Roosters aren't the team that they were either.
You know, they're in a in a rebuilding phase and
all teams go through it. We've been rebuilding for for
a few years, and I still think there's a few
more years tool we actually have a squad that can
put it with the best. I really think that the
(01:43:24):
Warriors at the moment are actually a mid table team
and are to a point lucky to be in the
top four.
Speaker 3 (01:43:33):
Good level measured stuff from you, Greg. Look forward to
chatting again as the playoffs get closer. I feel as
they will beat their Eels at home on Friday, the
Sea Eagles away. You just don't ever know, do you.
With the Seagules they put fifty odd nearly sixty on
the Dolphins last night. Still I think are in the mix.
Somen'd they the Sea Eagles can still make the top eight. Yeah,
they can. They're in two points behind the Roosters, so
(01:43:55):
it may well be that they're playing for their top
eight lives when we go there in a couple of
weeks plus, it'll be daily Cherry Evans final game for
the Sea Eagles, so there'll be a motion wrapped around
it there as well as last done this last home game,
potentially spending what happens in the finals. I still think, yes,
having it in their hands I think does bring with
(01:44:17):
it a high degree of motivation, and Greg, you're absolutely right.
Anyone who's watched the NRL, and I know you've watched
it extremely closely this year can see the quality and
the Raiders and the Storm and the Bulldogs and the Panthers,
those four sides who went hammer and tongs at one
another the other night. But all the Warriors can do
(01:44:41):
is be there and hopefully hopefully find something extra come
finals time. Just to explain the finals, we shouldn't assume
that everybody knows what happens and why finishing the top
four is so important. The way the finals in the
NRL are structured is that they split effectively into top
(01:45:01):
four and then the teams five through eight, and the
teams five through eight play elimination games five v eight
and six v seven. The losers can start thinking about
Mad Monday, they're out. The winners progress meantime one plays
four and two plays three. The losers of those games
(01:45:22):
get another crack and it's a game at home against
the winners who come through from the bottom eight. So
it does a couple of things. Finishing the top four.
It guarantees you at least one home final and it
gives you a second life. That's why it's so important.
One twenty seven, Lyle, please hold made. I know you've
been there a while. Get to you in just a moment.
(01:45:43):
I eight hundred and eighty ten eighty. We can talk
worries for the next fifteen minutes or so plenty to
unpack back in a moment.
Speaker 2 (01:45:49):
It's more than just a game.
Speaker 1 (01:45:52):
Weekends for it with Jason Yne and TJ Gunnomes, New Zealand's.
Speaker 2 (01:45:56):
Most trusted home builder, news talks, they'd.
Speaker 3 (01:45:58):
Be news talks. There'll be one thirty Thanks folding, Lyle.
Good afternoon, good mate.
Speaker 37 (01:46:04):
Look the tribe came to town Droves yesterday. I made
of mind text me this morning instead. It took them
two hours to be able to get onto a train
to go home to Brisbane. Logan a logan up for
a Coumra Pimpermar would have all been empty. They were there.
It was a hell of a racket they made. Even
(01:46:24):
with the TV turn down. The Harves impressed me the
first sixty seconds that we were too flesh, but they
managed to regain their composure. Look, yet number four sides
should always beat a number sixteen or seventeen side easy.
But the competition is a little bit different. You know,
over the last few weeks we've had bottom sides beat
(01:46:45):
top sides, so just to sort of say, oh no,
you should always beat a little bit harsh. And the
Titans are a side that can strike from anywhere, you know.
So I think twenty twenty seven is probably going to
be there year. I don't see it happening this year.
The two games on Friday night were you know, several
runners up of what the Warriors can we produce even
(01:47:07):
on a good day. But look, I watched that other
game this morning. Good god, you get a yellow card
for farting in Union, don't you. I mean, the wonder
people are turning away from the game. The good Father
will be rolling in his grave.
Speaker 3 (01:47:23):
Yeah, it's very different, different old game, lyle, different old game.
But yeah, I was so impressed with the crowd there
last night. I know a lot of Keywis live on
the Gold Coast and in Brisbane. My niece's over there
and she went to the game, sent some photos and
looked amazing. Then the Titans should be much better than
they are. Even the commentators were saying that last night,
(01:47:44):
you look at the when they do attack, and I
think they were making the point that when at the
end they did score those those tries, those two tries
near the end, by which stage the game had gone,
it must have been infuriating for old Dezzy Hasler, the coach,
and their fan base that they can't put it together.
I mean, they are rock bottom, but when they do
(01:48:06):
put it, get it, they're you know, they're a good
attacking team. Just good to see the Warriors beat them
after some of the trials and tribulations of recent years.
Thanks loll appreciate it. Hey Bevan, how are you, mate?
Speaker 8 (01:48:17):
Jeff?
Speaker 30 (01:48:19):
Yeah, I don't quite understand why the Titans are the
bogey team. I don't. I can't remember the last time
the Warriors beat Storm and I think Storm of their
bagey teams storm fashion every time.
Speaker 18 (01:48:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:48:32):
I guess the difference with the Stormers that they just
they beat just about everybody, don't they. I think.
Speaker 18 (01:48:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:48:36):
The bogey with the with the Gold Coast Titans is
that it's inexplicable, it's unexplainable.
Speaker 30 (01:48:42):
Yeah right, But I mean that still hasn't changed the
fact that if they want to go all the way,
they're going to have to get over the Storm, and
they're a scary team. I mean, Balamie is just yeah,
I think it's going to be a Storm Panther's final
actually sorry Storm Raiders.
Speaker 3 (01:48:58):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I watched the Raiders the other night
and just the way I know, I know that, you know,
Nathan Cleary probably nine times out of ten, you know,
puts that between the posts rather than hits the post.
But yeah, I just like the way the Raiders have
gone about things this year. I know that, you know that,
you know how proud they are of their rugby league
teams in Canberra, And yeah.
Speaker 30 (01:49:18):
Yeah, I mean Ricky Stewart, he wears his heart on
his sleeve, but he's such a you know, he's like
mal Maninger, right, He's a true and true Raiders. His
blood's green and and you know, I kind of he's
been through a bit of a bad patch with them.
But it's good to see the Raiders back. I mean yeah,
(01:49:39):
I mean I want the Storm to go, but I
mean yeah, I think the Storm are going to find
it really hard to get past that. There's some there's
some super talent in that top four.
Speaker 3 (01:49:48):
Yeah, it feels like Raiders Storm to me. I don't
know that that's not necessarily very bold claim. When you
look at the table, it just feels like that's what
we're headed for. Just like you know, whenever Penrith have
been in and around the top two last couple of seasons,
you almost feel like they're destined for the Grand Final,
and they have been. And I may still have a say, Kevin,
(01:50:08):
you know, I think if there was a one off
game between the Panthers and the Warriors, I think favoritism
would land in the lap of the Panthers, wouldn't it.
But you know, Warrior's got to get there first and
we'll see what happens from there.
Speaker 30 (01:50:17):
Eh, Yeah, totally, Yeah, I mean, and I think, you know,
as we've sort of said, you know, if you would
have taken top four for the Warriors, you would have
taken it every day of the week. So you know,
let's just see where they go, you know, let's just
see how far they can go. Anything can happen. Thanks Jay,
good on you be.
Speaker 3 (01:50:37):
I've always good to chat mate. Thanks for taking the
time to call. Frank High.
Speaker 20 (01:50:42):
Yeah, Hi, Piney, I haven't been I've had an eye
off for the last months and so so I haven't
been a happy chappie, but very happy last night. At
the beginning of the season, if they'd have said, look,
we're two games to play Warriors will be in the
top four, I think we'd have taken that. You know,
(01:51:02):
it's just we're going to be playing the Eels next week.
I think that we need a good game now to
just sharpen us up. I know this Josh what's his
name ade Okr and the Mitchell Moses that the two guys,
and that Eels team that I'm a bit frightened of,
(01:51:22):
But I do think we need now a team like
the Eels too, if we can get past them. Okay,
I don't think we're gonna We're not quite the standard
of the Raiders, We're not quite the standard of the Storm,
but if we get to play them, well, as long
as we can lose, well, I know that sounds oxymolon,
(01:51:46):
but but yeah, I just feel that we've done pretty
well considering we've had so many injuries, and I just
feel for the boys. I just I just love that team,
and I think great they've done. They've done well, and
I still think there's still a little hope there that
we could just stir a bit even better.
Speaker 3 (01:52:08):
Frank, absolutely, and yeah, I love this team as well.
I love watching them play. And you know, the fact is,
as you say, after last year when they were thirteenth,
wo'd buy your hand off the top eight. They were fourth,
of course two years ago went on to lose in
that preliminary final. But before that you've got to go
a long way back before you find the Warriors in
(01:52:28):
the top four. In fact, youve got to go back
to two thousand and seven and here we are in
the situation where they could be in the top four
twice in three years. So yeah, and as you say,
funny things happen in sport. You know who knows what
happens when playoff football comes around? You just you just
never know.
Speaker 20 (01:52:47):
Yep, thanks poney, yep, yep.
Speaker 3 (01:52:49):
No, good on your Frank. Enjoy chatting to you as always, mate,
Stay well, hi, James, get how we going? Bonny good James,
good good?
Speaker 16 (01:52:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 25 (01:52:58):
I could get the winter last night.
Speaker 34 (01:53:00):
But again it was.
Speaker 25 (01:53:03):
Frustrating at times, and one thing was the worry all year.
I feel as they've really been struggling to hang on
to momentum in games. They get up a couple of tries,
they look to me going well, one or two things
will go against them, and then they just lose the
momentum and they just continuously let the opposition back into
(01:53:25):
the game. And it's just been really frustrating all season.
Speaker 3 (01:53:30):
What's the fix on that, James, What is the Because
you're right, I'm finding myself nodding my head. I can
think of more than one occasion where, you know, the
Warrior's got a couple of tries, right, we're on our way,
and then all of a sudden it's level again or
whatever it is. And even though last night, you know,
those two late tries didn't actually affect the result, it's
still you know, you'd still preferred You're still preferred to
when thirty two six, wouldn't you, you know exactly?
Speaker 25 (01:53:53):
Yeah, Yeah, I don't know. Maybe it's a mental thing,
or you know, once once they get one or two
penalties against them, they just they just seem to really
struggle with keeping the foot on the throat. And just
because last night it looked like they can easily pile
twenty points on that Titan steam and they should have.
They should just keep going and going and going.
Speaker 7 (01:54:11):
But I don't know what it is.
Speaker 25 (01:54:13):
They just let the foot off the throat and the
other team gets back into it, and it just seems
to happen every week.
Speaker 3 (01:54:19):
And I thought exactly the same thing when when Roger
got his second try and what we're we're head then
eighteen six and we'd only had twenty minutes. I thought, right,
this is going to be you know, we're going to
get We're going to put you know, forty five fifty
on these blokes. But then it took and then yeah,
and then but then it took ages, didn't it for
there to be another try. I think the next try
(01:54:40):
was on the hour mark when Pompey scored. So there
was that period between sort of twenty minutes and sixty
minutes where you know, there's a lot of hulf and
puff but not a lot of outcome.
Speaker 25 (01:54:49):
Really, Yeah, it's like they go after the boil and
I don't know why.
Speaker 3 (01:54:53):
Yeah, Oh well, as long as look just before you
go eels Sea Eagles, so Eels at home, Sea Eagles away.
I don't think that's I feel like that's a pretty
good kind of lead into to play off foot. A
couple of wins there and then you you know, top
four and then you know who knows.
Speaker 25 (01:55:10):
Ye, Yeah, well, they both had pretty good wines yesterday,
so correct, yep. I'd say we should probably play well
against the Eels at home next week and then anything
can happen over and Manly.
Speaker 3 (01:55:22):
That's right, good yet to you, James. Thanks for taking
to Tidler call and mate, I appreciate it very much.
Drive safe twenty one away from two. All right, So
Warriors next are at home on Friday nights. It's a
bit of a bit of a short a shortish turnaround.
I guess you'd say one less day than they perhaps
would normally have the Saturday to the Friday, Friday night
(01:55:43):
eight o'clock Eels. Massive game already, isn't It seems like
every game is at the moment. But yeah, big game
Warriors Eels Friday, and then the following week is the
Friday again away at Manly. Like I said, I think
that's quite a I think that's quite a good lead
in to finals football.
Speaker 24 (01:56:02):
You know.
Speaker 3 (01:56:02):
I feel like if the Warriors can, can you know,
win at home on Friday, which I think think they
certainly can and I think they will, and then go
to Manly and win, They're all of a sudden you're
going into finals off the back of four straight wins
and momentum. You know, I think some people believe in it,
some people don't believe in it. But I think I'd
rather go into the finals, you know, charging rather than stumbling.
(01:56:24):
Thanks for all your causing feedback on the Warriors. Much
appreciate it. Jason. Are you going to highlight Auckland f
C's one overnight? Says this text? Are you we can
do that? We can do that And in case you
missed it, if you like Auckland FC into the semi
finals of the Australia Cup on penalties, all that matters,
says Chopper. Is Taranaki losing the shield, It's always why
(01:56:45):
Kadow taking it off, as we should have taken the
shot to make it twenty five twenty hard to take
up the nak. Yeah we're going to talk Renfilly shield
after two, but yeah, that game did turn on that
moment late on they're what were they head twenty two
twenty Josh Jacob instead of taking the shot a goal
(01:57:05):
and with it it was his decision or the leadership team.
They kicked for the line and he's kicked it dead.
He must wake up this morning, Josh Jacomb and think man,
I wish I had that one back down the other end.
Why can't I get a penalty? Len Us Opewanga lands it?
And here we are with why cufter in possession of
the shield. We'll talk more about that after too. Let's
take a break. We will come back and James mcconey
(01:57:28):
will join us in his regular Sunday slot.

Grand Prix. Great stuff, Angus. That's got a place we
(01:58:02):
normally find you. James mcconey in the Singapore Airlines Business
Class Lounge in Monza.
Speaker 16 (01:58:09):
I mean that's awesome, Yeah, so.
Speaker 3 (01:58:13):
Good, so good. Hey, let's talk some rugby Championship All
Blacks Argentina Historic day for the Permis. You've got to
be happy for them, don't you.
Speaker 16 (01:58:23):
Yeah, I'm I'm a big Pumis fan actually, and in fact,
my favorite player, Thomas Albert Albornos got injured off really
early in the game, clearly broke his hand, playing with
tears in his eyes by the looks of things, and
they still won. So I actually think the way that
they played, though, was exceptional and wasn't a good seeing
(01:58:44):
a team from set face play run a strike move
with about three or five crazy wild passes, wide ones
as well, you know, massive like I was. I was
just going, this is actually what I want to see
it instead of even though they can keep it tight Argentina,
they flung it around and I loved it.
Speaker 3 (01:59:04):
I did. Two. Should we be worried about the All
Blacks with South Africa in coming in a fortnight Yeah?
Speaker 16 (01:59:12):
Yeah, always. I think the South Africans have shown that
they they can grind this down in a game, but
I think the All Blacks at full strength will be
pretty formidable. I just think that for this particular test,
there were a few hospital passes, and one was the selections.
I thought, Simon Parker, you know, having to start at
number eight in his very first Test, when he's played
(01:59:35):
mainly number six for most of the year and also
hasn't really played that much rugby recently. I thought that's
a really big ask for him. And also see Josh Lord,
who I mean, I'm a Chiefs fan. I have hardly
seen Josh Lord play for the past three years. I
think he's played three games in twenty twenty three, three
games last year. I mean sorry, six games in twenty
(01:59:57):
twenty three. Six games last year and this year I'd
say be around about the same, if not less. And
in one of those games he started and when off
after ten minutes. So it's not exactly a really good
runway to play test rugby. When you see someone like
Sam Darry out there playing MPC. I mean, I just
thought maybe that could they could look at something like that.
(02:00:20):
The selections.
Speaker 3 (02:00:21):
I'll tell you the guy they need back is Cam Roygad.
They honestly, I just don't know. I think having him
back gives you a massive boost. I don't know what
the latest does. Jason Holland didn't know when we spoke
to him a couple of hours ago. I just hope
Cam Roygads fit for those games well.
Speaker 16 (02:00:39):
Also the other thing is number seven. Okay, so Doc,
if he started the last two tests at number seven,
I thought we're talking about him. Last week. I thought
he did really well. Okay, if you wanted to rest
him and give other people a chance in their jersey,
you've obviously got a you know, Hall of Famer and
Ardie Savia there. But what is Peter Larky doing if
he's been selected. I know Luke Jacobson is recovering from
(02:01:00):
an injury because remember when they picked the squad, they
had a few guys who were who were that were
covering for injuries. But then like I played almost an
entire Test against France last year in Paris and was exceptional.
So you know, there are guys who've got the track
record at test rugby who I think it's worth exploring
and going for big, tall timber. When you looked at
(02:01:22):
the way chocoba Is played his timing at second five,
I men he plays for Toulouse in France. He plays
elite rugby most of the time, and he was exceptional today.
And just noticing that we only had one loose forward
who you could say is a bit of a flyer,
and that's already doing that kind of role on his own,
just to me that the flow on effect was Argentina
(02:01:44):
got uninterrupted ball. Where were our spoilers while sitting in
blazers in the stand?
Speaker 3 (02:01:51):
Yeah, honestly I said before and it's not new, but
a big part of coaching is selection. So that twenty
three for South Africa at Eden Park is going to
be so fascinating to see what they do, what twigs
they make, who they can bring back. Yeah, it's a
very interesting proposition. Hey, Warriors, I was just.
Speaker 16 (02:02:11):
Going to say one one last thing. Scott Barrett is
clearly fighting to get back in to form and I
think we rely on him a little bit too much
to start and play and he can't be He's it's
impossible to give him time because Patrick Tupole or two
is injured. But Scott Barrett at his best as absolute
world class and he did some amazing things today. But
you can tell he's still fighting to get back into
(02:02:32):
form and he shouldn't have to do that in pivotal
test matches, if you know what I mean. But it's just,
you know, it's like we have to even though he's
still struggling for that fitness and form.
Speaker 3 (02:02:42):
Well, We're out of time now, aren't we. We're out
of time. There's no more games. Yeah, you know, so
he kind of yeah, if you don't, Yeah, exactly right. Hey,
Warry is one last night, So the Gold Coast Titans
are no longer a bogey team for us.
Speaker 16 (02:02:57):
I know, how good was that? But also, I mean,
the story of the day, and I think your callers
have identified it really well was rodded to as seck
so two of the forty five running meters eighty six
post contact meters. I mean, it's just exceptional stuff from Roger.
But I did run into him earlier on in the
year when he was in at Sky and I asked
(02:03:18):
him about where he wanted to play and where he
was happy to play, and he told me that he
said to where he'd just give me a position and
tell me that's where I'm going to play, and I'll
be happy and I'll try and nail that role. That's
all he wanted. He wasn't buying into any of that
fullback chat at all. He just said, tell me where
you want me to play, And when he found out
(02:03:38):
it was the wing, he said, sweet, happy with that.
And of course you hear him when He was interviewed
last night talking about the pride of that left edge
with Chanelle, Harris de Vitas and you know Lequer and others.
You know, just what they've done all year. He loves
being out there. And you look at the stats he
and Charles Nickel clocks that are really sharing the fullback
(02:03:59):
twoties when you look at the way they build the
sets themselves. And Charms wasn't too bad as well with
nearly two hundred meters last night and seventy post contact meters.
So those two guys in our backfield one reason why
the Warriors and Warriors fans can have some hope moving
into the postseason.
Speaker 3 (02:04:18):
I love that about Roger to I Vasishik. I love
that that even at his you know, at his stage
of his career, he's done everything. Magnificent player, just a
generational rugby league player, just says okay, will you tell
me where you want me to play and I'll perfect
that role. That's magnificent. What an attitude, man.
Speaker 16 (02:04:34):
Yeah, it's just a it's incredible to see. And also,
I mean if you've seen him on League Lounge on Sky,
he comes on with Sean Johnson speaking of such things,
Sean absolutely natural as a TV's quite sickning for someone
like myself. But Roger is an incredible guest, really insightful,
loves to just give a little bit of information, educating
(02:04:55):
everybody along the way. And he's very fun as well,
lots of fun.
Speaker 10 (02:05:00):
Love it.
Speaker 3 (02:05:00):
Hey, have you plotted the parade route for the for
the ran Furly Shield.
Speaker 16 (02:05:05):
Well, I'm hoping it does come around my place at
Tata tu in west Auckland, but I'm not sure will.
I'll be running my own operation out here. I'll put
some others on Poney and he'll be quite confronting for
some of the neighbors. But that shield victory. The only
thing wrong were the white cuto shorts. Did you see
(02:05:26):
those shorts?
Speaker 6 (02:05:26):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (02:05:27):
What would they look like?
Speaker 2 (02:05:28):
They've been?
Speaker 3 (02:05:28):
They were dirty? What was going on with those?
Speaker 17 (02:05:31):
Yeah?
Speaker 16 (02:05:31):
The dirty shorts now need to be put in the
Hamilton Museum along with Lemosopolwana's kicking tea because it failed
him and he's lucky to get that penalty away, the
ball slipping off the tee and the countdown progressing like
a NASA countdown. I was like, get that kick away.
But yeah, the shorts were terrible. I think it was
(02:05:51):
because of the clash of uniforms. They were allowed to
wear the tricolors of red, yellow and black as long
as they had different shorts, and they chose dare I say,
a sort of a brownie gray.
Speaker 19 (02:06:03):
It was terrible, the.
Speaker 3 (02:06:05):
Terrible color for shorts. Absolutely terrible. Good on your mate, Yeah,
it was like one of those movies when you when
the guy's diffusing a bomb as the as the you know,
the counter counts down to zero. He just got the
kick away Lema and won the shield for White Cutter.
Always great chatting, James. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, mate.

of here from some White cuttle fans actually cowbells and
all the shield is yours. I thought that had it
(02:08:15):
far more recently than they had. I said yesterday. They
seem to have it all the time. They've been hated
since twenty eighteen. It's been a while. It's been a while.
And some guys in that team, like Limasopowanga is in
that team, he's never had the shield. Only the second
time he's had the chance to challenge for it. Seems
like some guys get you know, six or seven goes
at it anyway. Limasopowoga is on the show. Leon Busby

Speaker 3 (02:09:31):
That's four four tries for Macca Springer in a forty

Speaker 3 (02:09:54):

Park last week. Victory for South Africa in Cape Town.
Jesse Creole in with the keys.
Speaker 6 (02:10:10):
Who's that you can he put it?
Speaker 2 (02:10:14):
It's the nation mark on the game.
Speaker 3 (02:10:17):
You have an itzabit with an ex test track one
one hundred and thirty five caps, thirty twenty two the
final score to the spring box. If you've just woken up.
Argentina have made history, been in the All Blacks on
home Saul for the first time and.
Speaker 5 (02:10:31):
It is over twenty nine to twenty three. And what
a side is He's bouncing Argentina. They did it in Paramatta,
they did it in christ Church, they did it in Wellington,
but now they do it's in their capital.
Speaker 3 (02:10:47):
Twenty nine twenty three the final. Let's go to the NRL.

Speaker 6 (02:11:00):
You killing up turbos there again?
Speaker 41 (02:11:04):
It is probable Philly they're carving the Dolphins to ribbons.
Speaker 3 (02:11:11):
Fifty eight thirty to Manly over the Dolphins the Warriors,
as we've heard this afternoon, going back to back, helped
by two tries from Roger to Ivasashik. Now for Regan,
head out for boy.
Speaker 6 (02:11:22):
I'm harrister, be so good, cot be up to about

Speaker 3 (02:11:30):
Thirty to eighteen over the Titans and the Eels, putting
a bit of a dent in the Rooster's top eight hopes.
Speaker 42 (02:11:35):
Hoses with the kid turning junior two, perm had to
jump from the field of.
Speaker 7 (02:11:39):
Play and desperately's words of him.
Speaker 11 (02:11:42):
Four.
Speaker 2 (02:11:42):
It's a time.
Speaker 42 (02:11:44):
It's a columby, a calumny.
Speaker 3 (02:11:47):
For the rooms at Bay, a thirty teen win for
the Eels to Football's Premier League, a goalkeeping era helping
Spurs beat Manchester City. It's a horrendous moment.
Speaker 43 (02:11:57):
It's Rischarlison, It's Chutelina and it's two for Tottenham and
Manchester City have only got themselves to blame. Trafford Courts
in the most uncomfortable the stout.
Speaker 3 (02:12:09):
Lights to Nilda Spurs. They're equal on points at the
top with North London neighbors Arsenal, who put Leeds United
to the sword.
Speaker 41 (02:12:17):
Down Wind goes down que has a pink penalty past
awn does make an impact of windsor penalty for Arsenal.
Victor yocras the perfect damage to the perfect day for
Arsenal five nil.
Speaker 3 (02:12:32):
The final score instill the football. Auckland FC through to
the semi finals of the Australia Cup courtesy of a
penalty shootout, went over Sydney FC last night.
Speaker 44 (02:12:41):
To Lollly already on the score sheet this evening. Oh,
he slips like he's slipped all night and that's it.
And we wondered if a slip would prove the crucial moment.
And at the most crucial moments it is a slip
from toe Lollly that has sent Auckland into the semifinals.
Speaker 3 (02:12:59):
Back up to the northern hemispheres. Some big wins and
Paul play at the Women's Rugby World Cup Australia over
Samua Os. Sheee she can rip that right to left.
Speaker 42 (02:13:08):
Pass, can't she is Piper Duck accelerates.
Speaker 6 (02:13:11):
Through crines, Frederick's t hols.
Speaker 3 (02:13:14):
The Kid's got a double seventy three nil there Scotland
over Wales.
Speaker 42 (02:13:19):
Sublime for the fire half Muttonson to all lacerating Whales.
Speaker 3 (02:13:24):
Old Cigars thirty eight points to eight in Canada over Fiji.
Canada win the line out at the back and here
Ain't count thundering towards the tryline. And there's another one
and it's Karen park Count who has the score for
Canada sixty five points to seven and circling back to
domestic rugba to finish. The log of Wood has changed hands.
Speaker 6 (02:13:48):
Seventy nine minutes gone. It's twenty two, twenty to ten.
Speaker 8 (02:13:52):
Lucky.
Speaker 6 (02:13:52):
The ball comes over Peckham. He's got fifteen seconds. He
can't get the ball on the team God drama. Ten seconds.
He's got it there now he's back, he's forward, he's
kicked it. The flare up? Why Callow at the front?
What drama?
Speaker 1 (02:14:13):
The school from the track field and the court on
your home of Sport, Weekend Sport with Jason Vine, News.
Speaker 3 (02:14:19):
Talks, NB News Talks inb and Weekend Sport fourteen past two.
The Black Ferns open their Rugby World Cup title defense
tomorrow morning, four point thirty our time against Spain. Let's
bring in sixty eight test. Former Black Ferns halfback twenty
eighteen Kel Tremaine Memorial Trophy winner and rugby World Cup
winner in twenty ten, twenty seventeen and twenty twenty two.
(02:14:43):
Kendra Cox Edge of course, Kendra, How optimistic should we
feel about the Black Ferns chances of winning what would
be a third straight World Cup?
Speaker 27 (02:14:52):
Well, I think we should be heavily optimistic obviously, you know.
I guess there's a lot of a lot of pressure
in terms of obviously winning the last one and then
obviously England and England and in England obviously performing pretty
well and potentially going up against them that. Yeah, I think, yeah,
I think we've got to be optimistic about it. And
we did it last time.
Speaker 8 (02:15:09):
So yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:15:10):
So just the four official tests for the Black Ferns
in twenty twenty five, in that game against the New
Zealand fifteen, is that sufficient build up or would they
have liked a bit more?
Speaker 27 (02:15:21):
No, I think the build up's been, you know, being fine,
and I've obviously done stuff with their camps and whatnot,
and they've worked towards what they need and need to do.
I mean, it's always good if you can get as
many games as you can, but just just been able
to play, you know, I'll back that they've done enough
and it's probably no different to any other World Cup
prip that we've had.
Speaker 3 (02:15:39):
Let's have a look at the New Zealand squad. The
outside backs and this team are so exciting. Renee Holmes,
Asha Lettieinger, Braxton Sorenson McGee, Caitlin Carlo and of course
Porscha Woodman Woodcliffe. How much of New Zealand's strategy will
be about getting the ball wide to such dangerous players
like that.
Speaker 24 (02:15:57):
Well, I think that's probably how a New Zealand player, right.
Speaker 27 (02:15:59):
We've played a lot of expensive footy, and I know
that we wouldn't have exposed a lot of our game
plans throughout the game's previous to Worldcar and there will
happily a few kind of tricks up the sleeve. But
I think you know, when you've got a players on
the art size like that, that can light it up
and at the same time, people are going to think
that we're probably going to do that. So it might
be an opportunity to use our quality midfielders with you know,
(02:16:20):
Sylvia Stacey and Theresa set to find it, Amy du Forsu.
We've got some quality midfielders as well that would be
obviously to you know, take up in the middle if
we need to, and then we've got a great board
pack to do the same thing to.
Speaker 3 (02:16:31):
Your old position. Kendra halfback. All three half backs off
to their first Rugby World Cup at a tana Hire Maya,
Joseph Rissiliana PODi Lane. How do you evaluate the half
back strength in the squad?
Speaker 24 (02:16:42):
Oh, we go back the girls. You know they're telling
the town to athlete.
Speaker 27 (02:16:45):
You've got someone like Resa who's you know, done pinna
cool events before the World Cup, but been to Commonwealth
and Olympics and you know that kind of experience is great.
The other two, you know, they don't think it will
FaZe them. The quality of players. The cool thing about
these three half packs is they all offer something slightly
different with the whether the way they want to play.
I don't think anyone's necessarily They haven't cemented the number
nine jersy yet. I think it will come down to
(02:17:07):
how the team probably wants to play and what the
game plan is for each game.
Speaker 3 (02:17:11):
And with the first fives, only two named in the
squad hete Dedmont of course and Kelly Brazier, who we
know is hugely experienced, but before playing against Australia this year,
she hadn't played a test since November twenty twenty one.
Are we a little bit light? If something were to
happen to Ute Dumont.
Speaker 24 (02:17:30):
I think would be I think would be able to be.
Speaker 27 (02:17:32):
Okay, We've probably got Renee Holmes, I think should be
someone that could probably cover ten as well.
Speaker 24 (02:17:37):
So you've got that covered there, and we know that
she's a talented.
Speaker 27 (02:17:40):
Player too, so I think, you know, you know, you
never want to bank any injuries if someone gets into
someone potentially get called up to. But we obviously got
Kelly who's got the hell of a lot of experience
and can distribute and kick well, which the team you
may need as well.
Speaker 3 (02:17:52):
At the other end of the experience scale, the hugely
exciting Georgia Miller, who of course has come across from
the seven's program, but that trice he's scored against Australia
and Wellington just a glimpse of what she is capable of.
What are you predict for Georgia Miller at this World Cup?
Speaker 27 (02:18:10):
I predict that she's probably potentially could be, you know,
end up being that player of the of the tournament.
Speaker 24 (02:18:16):
You know, you call that nice and early. She's a freak.
She makes regularly look easy.
Speaker 27 (02:18:20):
I think she'll you know, she'll embrace it, and I
think she'll have a great, a great World Cup and
she'll have another breakout season in their first you know
fifteen's World Cup.
Speaker 3 (02:18:27):
So to the schedule, Paul playing New Hill, play Spain first,
then Japan, then Ireland, which will be their toughest Paul match.
Do you think Alan Bunting and his selectors will use
the first two games to come up with their strongest
side for the third game and then Ireland to the
knockout face.
Speaker 27 (02:18:42):
I think what they'll do is that that first game,
I believe that they'll still give people an opportunity to
get some good game time under their bout and then
probably leading into Japan and in Ireland obviously by Ireland,
you probably want to have your top teams, so you
probably want them to be playing some good game time
together in that Japan game as well.
Speaker 24 (02:19:00):
I don't think they've done that already this year.
Speaker 27 (02:19:02):
They've kind of, you know, they've moved around the squad
a lot, so they probably need to start cementing a
top A top fifteen as early as possible within the
World Cup.
Speaker 3 (02:19:11):
Apart from England, obviously, the hosts and world number one?
Who are the other big threats to New Zealand at
this World Cup?
Speaker 27 (02:19:18):
I think our biggest threat for thinking about New Zealand's
I think currently is Canada. I feel like they're a
bit of a bogie team for us, and you know,
the last couple of years you're drawing and a loss,
So I think, you know, we're going to potentially come
up against them in the semi final, and you know,
if all goes well and Anythingland, you know, goes well
for England France, they'll be in the other one. So
I think that's probably going to be the biggest, biggest one.
And then if you know, Ireland's another one that's been
(02:19:41):
you know they're coming up silently, you know as well,
and you know we've got to play them in Paul
play and you know you kind of want to top
your top your pool to make you make sure you
get that better semi final.
Speaker 3 (02:19:51):
And you yourself Kendra three Rugby World Cup wins, but
that last one, man, what I not it was? How
often do you think back to that last Rugby World
Cup final? The win over England eed in part November
twenty twenty two turned out to be your last test
for New Zealand and one of the most memorable nights
in our sporting history.
Speaker 27 (02:20:10):
Yeah, it definitely does mean that. Obviously, we've been World
Cup year. I mean I've been doing a lot of speaking,
you know, speaking things and stuff, and everyone kind of
talks about it, and I just love I love talking
about it. I love throwing myself back into that World
Cup and you know, going through that experience all again
and it was something pretty incredible. And I think we've
got an opportunity again, you know, to make something for
this one and do it again.
Speaker 3 (02:20:30):
Absolutely all right, So to circle back to finish as
we still cup on the coffee and get ready to
chair the Black fans on from twelve thousand miles away.
You feel like we should do so with a sense
of confidence.
Speaker 27 (02:20:41):
Yeah, I think the team's got what it takes. I
think we've got the players to be able to do it.
I think we should definitely be optimistic. You never know
that you've got a bit of an upholl about playing
a quality team like England. Highly I mean, you know,
we're saying that we're already talking about the final, but
there's a lot of games that's going to go on
before that, you know, but playing a team at home,
you know, we had that and we had that crowd
and what that gives you in their boost, that gives you.
So if it is in England and New Zealand final,
(02:21:03):
you know, I still I still want to be optimistic.
Speaker 24 (02:21:05):
You know, we did it last time and I believe
that they can do it again.
Speaker 3 (02:21:08):
All right, and exciting few weeks ahead, Kendra, thanks so
much for joining us on weekend Sport. Can't wait to
see how it all plays out at the Rugby World Cup.
Thanks for your time, nor thank you. See you lader,
see a load of Kendra Kendrack cox Edge there a
member of the broadcast team, so you'll hear her voice,
no doubt coming back from the other side of the
world when the Black Ferns get under way. So tomorrow
morning is when they have their first game. They take
(02:21:29):
on Spain in York the Line of Community Stadium in York,
four point thirty tomorrow morning. Look, this should be the
easiest of the three Paul games, and I think the
team that Alan Bunting has named for this one has
certainly got the look about it of giving a few
players a game certainly nowhere near their top side. You
(02:21:51):
look at the players who are on the bench and
you findever Hey Dumont there on the bench, the co captain,
Porscha Woodman Whickcliffe, and the reserves as well, Georgia Ponsonby.
You know, those are three players who probably are in
the strongest fifteen but won't play against Spain. So that's
tomorrow morning. Then next Monday it's Japan. It's a one
o'clock in the morning game, and then Ireland on the
(02:22:12):
morning of Monday, September the eighth, that one forty five.
So New Zealand should really in theory get through those games, okay,
and then they're into quarters, semis and final. That's the
business end of this Rugby World Cup. Already, as I
mentioned before, some big score lines in this Rugby World Cup,
as the as the haves and have knots of women's
rugby sort of sort themselves out. England already looking ominous
(02:22:34):
and look, I know you can't predict anything when it
comes to World Cups, but it feels as though if
New Zealand are to retain that title, then they've got
to get past the very very big obstacle that is England.
The final at Twickenham already sold out. Eighty two thousand
tickets already sold for the final could well be England
(02:22:54):
against New Zealand and a rematch of the last one
two twenty two. I want to take it down to
Dunedin where Otago are taking on Counties. Manico early kickoff
one thirty five. I'm not quite sure why that was County.
He's got to get a flight back out anyway. Otago
scored the first try on gold Sport.
Speaker 42 (02:23:11):
Otago hot on the attack, opened right inside his Gilbert Gilbert.
Speaker 6 (02:23:14):
Gilbert almost they're reaching out try.
Speaker 42 (02:23:17):
Right outside of the field. Sam Gilbert had three defenders
round him, muscled his way up to the line, reached out,
placed the ball and Otago go up five mil seven.
Speaker 3 (02:23:27):
And a half gone, but Counties bound straight back.
Speaker 42 (02:23:29):
The restart from Counties down inside the Otago twenty two
four by Naick Charts by Simon Peter Thorley a fire
and Counties hit straight back.
Speaker 3 (02:23:39):
And so it was seven five to Counties. But then
Otago got themselves back into gear.
Speaker 42 (02:23:44):
Opened right inside Leo Willie out the back Miller Nanicki
Nanika going close. Brilliant tackle there from Money Money three
out from the line little bit missies, but stapped up
by Brumfield. Otago still have it two out oh short
right inside and Nandick is going to go in. Otago
hit back ten seven Keckta Cabina strikes it and has
slotted the conversion and Otago back in twelve seven. So
(02:24:07):
twelve seven and then this well going to the front
of the line out bring the ball down and they
go short side right with Powell again five out from
the county's line. Nice little move there, Pleasure open left
hand side is bully three out ma ou the other
prop four out just in front of the post now
opens I left over the line. Who's that?
Speaker 7 (02:24:27):
Have they got it down?
Speaker 42 (02:24:27):
They have Otago In fact it is Will Tucker with
the try and Otago go up seventeen to seven, twenty
six gone on God support.
Speaker 3 (02:24:35):
Nighthart radio and the kick went over for nineteen seven.
But then just before halftime Moskinstitutu. They're playing half back.
Speaker 42 (02:24:42):
He gives it to Furness. Furness just short, so Tutu's there,
looks for the pass, pick and go wrapped up by
Otago one meter short. Ben Statu pickn go to the
left fen state and gets there and County score a
try on the stroke of half time, low kick and
to the left of the upright so I'm converted. Nineteen
twelve the half time score between Otago and Counties MANACAO
(02:25:03):
at four Side Bars Stadium.
Speaker 3 (02:25:06):
That's it yes at Forsyth Bar Stadium. Nathan Limb with
the call on Gold Sport and iHeartRadio. You can flick
across there and catch the second half if you'd like.
But nineteen twelve Otago leed Counties in this round four
Bunnings MPC match one more game this afternoon MLOW two
hosting Wellington at Central Energy Trust Arena in Palmerston North.
Two twenty five. Big domestic rugby story of the weekend,
(02:25:28):
of course, was the ran Furley shield changing hands yesterday
white Cuttle going to New Plymouth and taking it off
Taranaki Lemasopowanga the hero. He's on Weekend Sport after this
two twenty five.
Speaker 1 (02:25:39):
The biggest things in sport are on Weekend Sport with
Jason Paine and GJ. Gunnerhomes New Zealand's most trusted home
builder News Dogs MB.
Speaker 3 (02:25:49):
Two twenty eight. The log of wood is back in
white Cuttle's hands for the first time since twenty eighteen.
Speaker 6 (02:25:55):
Beg It Comes, It Comes, favoring he gets it at
a Judge movie, says.
Speaker 33 (02:26:00):
It's all over White hellow have won the rains really chilled.
Speaker 6 (02:26:06):
Twenty three, twenty two and a heart.
Speaker 3 (02:26:10):
Stopper, heart stopper. All right, White Kato fans happy to
hear from you. Actually, oh eight one hundred and eighty
ten eighty luxuriating this. What's it like to have the
log back in your possession? After the game yesterday, I
had the chance to sketch up with Limasopowanga asking them
how good that was.
Speaker 45 (02:26:27):
Yeah, it's amazing to be honest, you know, come up
here and play for where my wife's from and represent
where she's from and her family, and you know, this
is where our kids are going to live, and just
just to get amongst the region, and you know, I
know there's a lot of proud people in the White
Couple region and especially suburbs, and you know, hopefully we're
(02:26:48):
able to put of a few smiles on people's faces
tonight and this afternoon, and we get to take that
short home back to the White Couple And yes, it's amazing,
It really is cool, and I'm just so happy, just
not only for myself at the group, and there's a
lot of good people here work in the union and
work hard, and just it's so good to be able
(02:27:08):
to give back to everybody who's putting work behind the scenes.
Speaker 3 (02:27:13):
What are you and Aaron Cruden looking to bring to
this white couple side as real veterans of rugby.
Speaker 45 (02:27:20):
Yeah, I guess for us, but there's always pressure, but
it probably doesn't fluster us as much anymore. You know,
we're both fathers now, we have other commitments and rugby
is just a small part of our lives.
Speaker 8 (02:27:34):
It's what we do and it's not who we are.
Speaker 45 (02:27:36):
And I guess for us trying to get these young
boys who look at rugby as a as a bell
and end or and sometimes that pressure can get to them,
and just to realize it really is just a game
at the end of the day, and to really enjoy it,
because these moments come a few and far between, you know,
Like I've been able to play rugby for sixteen years
as a toe and this is my second challenge at it,
(02:27:57):
and so to get it this time around on the
second on the second go is pretty amazing.
Speaker 30 (02:28:04):
And you know, I'm really good. My favorite this moment,
and I enjoy it my bit.
Speaker 3 (02:28:08):
So the young guys and the team, I mean, they're
you know, they're just full noise, aren't they. Where do
these young guys get their energy from?
Speaker 45 (02:28:15):
Oh my, I wish I had the energy. I've only
got a certain amount of dancing to think. Most games
that are you know, like I know how to get
to the spot quickly and can read the play and
understand where the.
Speaker 23 (02:28:28):
Ball is going to go.
Speaker 45 (02:28:29):
So I think that just comes with experience. But yeah,
they really do give us a bit of life, and
they they challenge us to keep being better as older
players and to not slack off and rest on my laurels.
And they really challenge us. So to me, like every
day I'm coming and knowing that I've got to get furtter,
(02:28:50):
get fast, to get stronger, and just to keep up
and sayhead the other game.
Speaker 3 (02:28:54):
So you've been around for a long time, Lima, So
this is the first time you ever had the Ring
Philly Shield.
Speaker 45 (02:29:00):
Yeah, you know, you've got to get lucky to even
get a challenge, you know, Like I know some players
who as ever got a challenge, you know, like the
great Tony Brown, who's one of my favorite coaches. He
never had a challenge as a player, you know, like
that's those kind of you've got to get pretty lucky
to even you know, get a cracketter and if you
get a crack at it, so the kitchen think it
(02:29:20):
and hopefully you can come worth the chocolates. And today
we did.
Speaker 3 (02:29:24):
And you were behind for much of the second half,
behind for much of the second half. Did you always
feel as though you were still in the game.
Speaker 21 (02:29:32):
Yeah, I think the way.
Speaker 8 (02:29:33):
We've been playing, we've just been hanging in games, hanging
in games and knowing that we've got the we've got
the athletes to do it, we've got the.
Speaker 45 (02:29:39):
Game plan to do it.
Speaker 10 (02:29:41):
We just have to trust in each other and back
each other, and.
Speaker 13 (02:29:45):
When when the moments.
Speaker 45 (02:29:46):
Come to strike or to score, we've got to nail them.
And I think today we stayed and stayed in the fight,
and you know, it took an eighty minute penalty to
get over the line by one. And yeah, this team's
pretty special. There's some guested athletes here and makes them
a bit of experience with me and Tucker and shrugs,
(02:30:09):
and you know, hopefully there's some magic to happen coming
back back into the season.
Speaker 3 (02:30:14):
That is Lemisopolanga, who I caught up with after the
game yesterday. So a shield winner for the first time,
a shield holder for the first time, as social media
was terrific last night. Lemisopowanga, I just thought after the
game as well. You know, he's done a lot of things, Lemisopoulanga.
So is Aaron Cruden. You know they've played plenty of
rugby at the highest level, but they were both just
(02:30:34):
totally ecstatic at full time. That Loggerwood still means plenty,
still more than probably any other trophy in New Zealand sport.
It just keeps on keeping on as a as a
symbol of domestic rugby supremacy. And even listening to Lemasa
there you know in that whole career of us, he's
(02:30:56):
never never had it. He's got it now. Although Southland
are coming for it. I'm told by a number of people.
Southland are coming for it next weekend. They get the
the first crack at it. That's next Sunday Southland against
White Couple at at FMG in Hamilton. So what's that
a week today? If they hold on. So we've got
(02:31:16):
another message here, Piney Mark my word, says Simon Harbor
will take the shield off the Molers in a couple
of weeks. They're gonna have to improve, Simon. If they are,
they're going to have to improve. Twenty seven to three Scotty,
Hi mate, Okay.
Speaker 11 (02:31:32):
Just just a quick correction, Poney on the New Zealand's
biggest domestic rugby competition, which you haven't touched on so far, is,
of course the New Zealand's secondary schools. Where's the stream competition?
And the fourth finalists have been found for this week.
Speaker 3 (02:31:46):
Go on, tell us who they are? I know, Fieldings
in there, Fielding's in there.
Speaker 11 (02:31:50):
They're coming up against the reigning Auckland champions, the Greater
Auckland Champions, in fact, west Lake Boys High School, that
powerhouse rugby who's been to the finals I think twice
in the last three years late late yep, after Westlake
knocked out the money boys from Kings whose rugby budget
(02:32:11):
for the first Athene is roughly the same as any
of mu Zion's NPC teams.
Speaker 3 (02:32:19):
Westlake Over Kings Lover. Yeah, west Lake Over Kings Love.
Speaker 11 (02:32:23):
Teams Putty nine to twenty four and literally with a
tri staving tackle in the last, very last player of
the game by Westlakes captain l O Leith, and I
think it's going to be nominated in the Herald this
week as the Try of the Year and the competition
by your man Bruce Holloway, New Zealand's foremost schoolboy rugby writer.
(02:32:45):
And then in the other fight of the Ledger. For
this weekend's games, you've got Rhoda versus Southland after rad
defects of Wesley Colloge home of the world's most famous
rugby player back in his day. They've got Roda of
v Southland, West Lake v fielding Man.
Speaker 3 (02:33:03):
Two good matchups. There's some there's some good players running
around Scotty, aren't there. I've had a bit of a
look at some of these games. But yeah, famous schools
Southland seem to keep on punching, don't they. You know
you hear about the schools with them, you know who've
got the tradition and maybe a little bit of cash.
Southland seemed to continue keeping on, don't they.
Speaker 11 (02:33:21):
I fot you, and they've got an outstanding fullback. The
drop kicked his way to the national title two years
ago as a fifteen year old. He's now back in
his final year at school. I can't remember his name
off the top of my head, but of course Southland
knocked out King's College down in bottom half of the
South Island. Then he did it again with a forty
(02:33:41):
minut drop goal.
Speaker 3 (02:33:43):
Great to get the update, Scotty. Thanks mate, west Lake
Boys High fielding rot the Little Boys High, Southland Boys
High the top four in the national First fifteen competition.
Those games and next weekend. By the sounds of things,
we'll keep eyes on it. Thanks for bringing it to
our attention, Scotty, really appreciate it. Back on in the
second half in Dunedin, Otago, Leed Counties, mattic Our nineteen twelve,
with three minutes gone in the second half. When we
(02:34:06):
come back US sport, the NFL season is nearly upon
US storylines and NBA Basketball and Major League Baseball as well.
Leon Busby, our American sport expert, got to update this
state side.
Speaker 2 (02:34:18):
After this, don't get caught off side. Eighty eight Weekend
Sports with Jason Payne and GJ.
Speaker 1 (02:34:25):
Garvnerhops New Zealand's most trusted home builder News Talks NB
News Talks.
Speaker 3 (02:34:30):
They be coming up twenty to three. Let's get your
state side where there's always plenty happening sports wisely on
Busby as our American sports expert.
Speaker 8 (02:34:39):
Hello, mate, Anthony Jason, thanks for having me back. Got
heach tell us, So let's go straight into it.
Speaker 3 (02:34:46):
Yeah, let's do that, mate. I know you're you're keen
to talk infl but we can we can hold off
on that because I want to get a couple of
bits of information around basketball and baseball. Can we start
in the NBA a couple of major headlines coming out,
some mega contracts to tell us about.
Speaker 8 (02:35:00):
Yes, even though the NBA is in a sof season,
still to discuss the just for clarity, Poney of inverted
everything into New Zealand dollars. I love support of their
reigning MVP and NBA championsheid Gilgess Alexander from Oklahoma City
Thunder recently signed a massive contract Essention for one hundred
and twenty three million dollars a year. Not to be outdone,
(02:35:20):
the Phoenix Suns. Only ten days later, resigned all star
Devin Booker affectionately known in hard court circles as book
or d book to a new two year MAX extension
with the princely sum of one hundred and twenty five
million dollars annually. So we've got dear friends and Phoenix
air quick shout out to the Updike family who often
attend home games and they love Devin Booker as the
(02:35:42):
face of the team. He's certainly beloved by the Sun's faithfuls.
They they'll be excited that he's locked in for the
next couple of years at least. I think it's a
fair assumption, Piney, that the rest is hon to see
who will be the first player in NBA history to
earn eighty two million dollars a staggering one million dollars
per regular season game, So that equates to one hundred
and forty two million dollars New Zealand yearly. Almost impossible
(02:36:04):
to get our heads around, right. It's not a matter
of if, I think, but when that will happen. So
much like the NFL, it's almost as if the NBA
is printing their own money. Just recently, on your show,
Colin Smith mentioned the changes and how televised sports viewing
habits have changed and evolved over the last decade and
how we consume it. He also mentioned that the NFL
(02:36:25):
and NBA the Outlieres. When we look at viewership the NFL,
especially who had ninety of our one hundred most watched
TV programs in the US last year, it's crazy and.
Speaker 3 (02:36:35):
Day the Lakers. What's going on with the Lakers with
Luka Doncic Lebron James. What sort of shape are they
in moving forward?
Speaker 17 (02:36:43):
Yes, So the.
Speaker 8 (02:36:44):
Recent contract extension by the La Lakers for Slovenian superstar
Luca Doncish was notable because Lebron James was absent at
the press conference. Now, in the past, he's been in
attendance when starkey players have signed a new deal, and
this speculation that Lebron's no show was intentional by the
front office to show that they've taken back control of
(02:37:05):
the team. Just a side note, Piney, Lebron was actually
playing golf that day, so read into it what sort
of message they were seeing to the new owners. That aside,
Luca is now seen as the face of the franchise
and the team will be built around him a pursuit
of another title.
Speaker 3 (02:37:20):
Moving forward, Let's go to baseball, our Major League Baseball.
The regular season is winding down ahead of the World Series.
So are some of the teams and players leon who
are showing out for the playoffs and for the season awards.
Speaker 8 (02:37:33):
Yes, so most of your listens will be aware that
it's a grueling in one hundred and sixty two game
regular season, and there are a number of teams that
are genuine contenders heading into October. Let's start. In the
American League, the Detroit Tigers leave the conference just ahead
of the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Houston Astros,
and the Boston Red Sox. They round up the top five.
(02:37:53):
In the National League, the top five teams see the
Milwaukee Brewers leading the conference, closely followed by the Philadelphia Phillies,
Chicago Cubs, LA Dodgers, and the San Diego Padres. Also
the National League, the Colorado Rockies are on pace to
record a losing season of one hundred plus games. Since
nineteen fifty one, ninety one different teams have achieved this
(02:38:15):
ignominious feed. The current record is shared by the nineteen
sixty two New York Mets and the two thousand and
three Detroit Tigers. Not the sort of record to be
proud of, unfortunately, Pining, I know, it's not the sort
of record you want to be proud of it and
on your record. Also, if we look at individual players
making their mark, leaning into the playoffs and pitching in
(02:38:38):
favor to win the prestigious what they call the Cy
Young Award, where a minimum ten starts. This season, we
have all star all schemes of the Pittsburgh Pirates. At
an impressive six foot six, one hundred and eighteen Kielegrams,
the twenty twenty three MLB draft number one overall pick,
has made sixteen starts this year, giving up only nine
home runs, struck out one hundred and seventy four batters,
(02:39:01):
and has the lowest earned run average what we call
the ERA in the majors and only has second season.
Stan has an incredible career two point zero seven ERA. Piney.
I feel in a way that it's only a matter
of time of when not left before another the stronger
clubs of all that money will entice them away from
Pittsburgh for are kings ransom. So we look at the batting.
(02:39:22):
We look at the battest and the guys that are
up for the awards. There are three main categories that
they consider runners batted in which is called RBI, which
is led by Kyle Schwarba. The Philadelphia Phillies with one
hundred and nine home runs, Cal Raleigh of the Seattle
Mariners with forty seven and New York Yankee Saga Aaron
Judge with a betting average around only three point twenty
(02:39:44):
nine so far the season. So one of these three
guys will win to cover the MVP Award at season's end.
Speaker 3 (02:39:51):
Well, who are the favorites to win the World Series?
Just before we move to NFL?
Speaker 8 (02:39:55):
YEP, So I've done the heavy lifting here and calculated
the latest starts from three of the biggest betting agencies
in Las Vegas. The latest betting nods see the World
Series champion Dodgers favored to go back to back at
plus then a big gap to the Philadelphia Phillies at
plus six seventy, the Milwaukee Brewers at plus seventy ten,
the Detroit Tigers at plus eight eighty five, and to
(02:40:16):
round out the top five, the New York Yankees at
plus ninety five. So basically, what there's numbers tell us
is that the Dodgers, as long as they stay relatively healthy,
are almost assuring to repeat, and every other team is
fighting just to get to the World Series. But as
we know, Piney sports. An always started on paper. It's
all about he shows up on the day.
Speaker 3 (02:40:34):
Hang on, especially in the business end of the season. Right,
let's go to the NFL. Are not that far away
from getting underway. Final few preseason games and then Round
one scheduled for a couple of weekends away. A couple
of bits of news here Dallas Cowboys. But a drama
at the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 10 (02:40:52):
Oh, I'll tell you what.
Speaker 8 (02:40:52):
The Cowboys they love the drama. So college football officially
kicked off earlier today and Dublin Island of all places,
so that means the NFL is just around the corner.
The biggest story in the league right now is actually
something unfolding off the stiel. The Dallas Cowboys in the
past often referred to as America's team, and we're recently
valued at more than twenty billion New Zealand dollars are
(02:41:12):
in a bit of a standoff right now with their
best player, defensive end Michah Parsons, is emboiled in a
contract dispute for team owner slash general manager Jerry Jones.
The star linebacker is holding out for a long term
contract extension, which most are expecting him to eventually get
as the highest paid non QB in the league, expected
to be somewhere around seventy two to seventy seven million
(02:41:35):
dollars a year. Parsons is an edge Russia and his
role is to get out to the opposing quarterback, causing
chaos in the backfield. He's one of only five players
in NFL history to record twelve or more sacks in
his first four seasons. The other four players they're all
in the Football Hall of Fame. Now, the problem with
Jones as GM is that in the past, by the
(02:41:55):
time he inks then you deal with his star players,
it's often too late in the season to back down,
and he has to pay in the current market value,
which for a shrewd business and makes no sense. Have
been pretty much irrelevant on the field for the last
thirty years, and they're owning the third best team is
in their own division. So this drawn out sager between
Jones and Parsons and what now defines a once proud
(02:42:17):
franchise and unfortunately for long suffering Cowboys fans, because their
own prefers the attention and unnecessary headlines, the team will
continue to underperform and be on the outside looking at
when it comes to being part of the narrative as
a genuine Super Bowl contender, Aaron.
Speaker 3 (02:42:32):
Rodgers is the gift that keeps on giving the Pittsburgh
Steelers quarterback.
Speaker 8 (02:42:37):
Kind yeah, every time someone talks about Aaron Rodgers, you
know there's going to be some sort of drama around it.
So if we look at the top three quarterbacks for
the highest pass rating in NFL history, the Lamar Jackson
at number three from the Baltimore Ravens, Patrick Mahomes second
from the Kansassee Chiefs, and surprisingly, Aaron Rodgers is.
Speaker 16 (02:42:55):
At number one.
Speaker 8 (02:42:56):
So the new starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, he
ranked first. And it's a bit surprising him when we
consider as last three to five seasons have seen him
slowly regard rest in terms of production and results as
he ages out. For example, last season alone, he's failed
to pass over four thousand yards and recorded twenty eight
touchdowns and eleven interceptions, which is a long way office
(02:43:17):
heyday when he was stacking MVP awards. Also interesting is
that Rogers is sixth all time as a starting quarterback
in the NFL, but it's way down the list at
number twenty five all time in terms of fourth quarter comebacks.
Further time eventually catches up pony, especially when we discussed
profis who are looking to extend their careers into their
(02:43:38):
forties nowadays.
Speaker 3 (02:43:40):
How much does it cost to go to an NFL game?
Speaker 8 (02:43:44):
Okay, I hope you're sitting down anyway. No, ticket prices
for the opening week of the NFL season that they
vary greatly. So again, I've converted all the monetary figures
into the New Zealand dollars. For example, you can go
watch New Orleans versus Arizona for the low bargain price
of seventy five dollars, while at the top end of
the scale, you can attend the Philadelphia Dallas game for
(02:44:06):
no less than an i watering nine hundred and thirty
two dollars. I mean, Kosh, it's no wonder these guys
are getting paid astronomical suns when fans attending games have
to shell out their hard earned money. Just to put
it into context, the highest paid player in the NFL,
but incredibly only the third best player in the division,
earns a staggering one hundred and two million per season,
(02:44:28):
which averages a mind blowing six million per game. Of
the one hundred and twenty four quarterbacks currently contracted in
the NFL. The lowest page still makes a decent month
point four million per season. The crazy thing pining. With
new TV deals on the horizon, these contracts will only
continue to rise yearly. There seems to be no ceiling
with these megabals.
Speaker 3 (02:44:49):
Just outrageous money, outrageous. It is a Netflix series Quarterback.
No doubt you've caught it.
Speaker 8 (02:44:57):
Yeah, so I just wanted to ask you have you
watched the series before?
Speaker 40 (02:45:00):
Have you seen it?
Speaker 3 (02:45:01):
Or I haven't? I know it's on my list, but no,
I haven't watched it.
Speaker 37 (02:45:05):
Ajay.
Speaker 8 (02:45:06):
So it's reality TV at it's best, an intriguing look
into the most spotched sports competition of the world. We
get to have a look behind the curtain into the
lives of professional athletes at the top of their game. Now,
the quarterback is widely considered the most important position in
all of sports, mainly because they're required to handle the
ball on almost every play and have to make quick
(02:45:26):
decisions under immense pressure. The success and failure of the
football team rests largely on their shoulders, hence the reason
they get paid the most. All of that aside, those
quarterback is a great series, and of some of your listeners,
haven't you watched the series, now into its second season.
I strongly encouraged them to do so before the season
kicks off. It's really compelling viewing. Maybe also a timey
(02:45:47):
distraction from the disappointment Oh well beloved almosts early today.
Speaker 3 (02:45:50):
Finding maybe you're right just before you go.
Speaker 2 (02:45:53):
Have you done that?
Speaker 3 (02:45:54):
Have you done the heavy lifting on Super Bowl onds?
Who who's favored to lift it when we get round
of February?
Speaker 8 (02:46:01):
Yep, So most breting agencies expect the Baltimore Ravens and
Buffalo Bills to win Super Bowl sixty in February, followed
closely by the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles, then the Kansas
City Chiefs and the Detroit Lions rounding out the top five.
I've purposely left out the actual beating O. There's a
line off and shifts marginally before the regular season starts.
Your Sun's team, the Minnesota Vikings, are hovering around number ten,
(02:46:24):
so they're certainly in with the real chance to lift
the long Marty. But as often allude to Piney, the
best news is that the NFL season kicks off and
early eleven sleeps and ten in counting down the days
until Christmas.
Speaker 3 (02:46:36):
