Speaking of football, Phoenix up against Western Sydney this afternoon,

(02:44):
that money is going to go. As I understand it,
and we just got this sent through earlier on today,
it's the most viewed trade me item of twenty twenty five.
So Sam Ruth's historic spikes his subformanate mile shoes the
most viewed item on trade Me so far in twenty
(03:05):
twenty five. Brilliant stuff. Peacock out of Australia in his
regular slot as well Live Sport Today quite a bit
on the show. The black Caps up against Pakistan in Napier,
of course, as they round out the home summer with
the first of three One day internationals against Pakistan. Hasn't
really gone that well for New Zealand. I have to
say they lost the toss sent into bat they are
fifty for the loss of three, Will Young out for one,
(03:27):
debutant Nick Kelly for fifteen and Henry Nichols a short
time ago for eleven, Mark Chapman unbeaten on seven joined
by Daryl Mitchell. It's drinks and New Zealand fifty for
three in the thirteenth over, batting first against Pakistan at
a sun baked McLean park in Napier. I said yesterday
that you know you schedule a game of cricket in
Napier it tends to rain not today, but not great
(03:49):
news in the first thirteen overs for New Zealand fifty
for three. Will keep eyes on that. There are also

Breaking down the Hail Mary's and the epic fails weekend
sport with Jason Pin News Talk ZB.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Back to back victories for the Warriors here at.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Twenty twenty five, hasn't beat easy.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
For the home team and a real arm whistle back
to back indeed for the Warriors after the loss to
the Raiders first up in Vegas. It's a great pleasure
to welcome into the news Talks. He'd be studio Warriors
head coach Andrew Webster. Andrew, thank you so much for
popping out. It's great to see you. Thanks for spending
some time with us. She must come in as a
pretty happy coach. I would imagine with wins in the
(05:39):
last two games against Manly and the Roosters, what have
been the keys to those victories?
Speaker 4 (05:46):
I think definitely effort, scramble. Boys are scrambling for each other.
We haven't been perfect. I think we've actually conceded quite
a few line breaks, but we only considered one try
on the weekend, and there were so many OsO close
moments for the opposition to score, and we found a
way to get there and have each other's back and
stop them. Definitely our Kickchase. I think we're putting teams
(06:06):
where we want them to start their sets from, which
is applying a lot of pressure, and then we're coming
over the top when it matters. So lots to and
work on, Like we're no, I hear where we need
to be, but at least where got plenty of effort
and we're working hard for each other. If we've got
that at the end of the season and we start
playing better, then that'll be good.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
What happened in Vegas, Oh.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
No, we were Paul like, I can't put my finger
on it. I think I think it's a real lesson
in our preparation was really good, but it's not as
good as year until, like we came home the next
week and our prep was even better. We tried to
keep the boys busy in Vegas, just to keep them
away from all the distractions. But in hindsight, look, I
(06:46):
don't have the answers, but I just want to put
a line through it and hopefully I'll never going back
to Vegasy.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
I was going to ask that would you reconsider an
invitation to go back? It's a part of the NRLs strategy.
I think there was a lot of excitement, you know,
when the Warriors were selected as one of the teams
to go. I know the fans loved it. Would you
reconsider doing it again if you were invited?
Speaker 4 (07:06):
Definitely? I mean it's not my decision. Really, I didn't
get to say this time, and I'm sure I won't
get to say next time. But I'll support the concept,
Like I'm glad that we did go and glad our
fans got to see us there, So like, yeah, if
they wanted us to go again and it made sense
for our fans, then we'll take that to that tough
carry for everyone, But yeah, there was lots of love
(07:29):
about it. Look, we got to see and decent things
that some of our boys will never get to do
in their lives.
Speaker 5 (07:34):
You know.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
So rugby league takes you all around the world, but
we're just disappointed we didn't do it for all those
fans because we were so well supported. Everywhere you walked,
you just saw worries fans and then now it felt
like we let them down a bit.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
Let's talk about a couple of players. Your half's combo,
Chanelle Harris, Devita, Luke Metcalf. You've selected them for the
first three games. In fact, it's been the same seventeen
for the first three games, Yeah, which has been terrific.
What do you predict for Chanelle and Luke as the
season goes on.
Speaker 4 (07:59):
I just think once they build that combination, they're going
to thrive. Otherwise we wouldn't have them there. And we've
got two great back ups in to Mighty and Tanner
Boyd that at any time we could call on and
they do a fantastic job. They're playing really good football
in their own right and reserve great. At the moment,
I think these boys have had real glimpses of real
(08:19):
good footing. I think Vegas we didn't give them opportunity
to raiders to show what they could do off the
bat the way we defended. But yeah, I just think
like round two, you've got to see Luke Enchanell really
thrive at back into the game, and the same thing
happened on the weekend. Like they want to improve things
we'd like them to improve, but we're absolutely wrapped with
(08:41):
what they're achieving, so particularly with their kicking game, like
they're putting the oppositions right where we want it, Like
I said, so that's pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
How challenging has it been for Luke Metcalfe to step
into the boots of a club legend like Shawn Johnson.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
You'd have to ask Luke. But on the surface, he
seems really cool. He seems he seems really calm about
what he wants to do. He's excited for the next challenge,
he wants to rain. So what I've seen is a
guy who wants to improve every day. He knows what
he's good at. Yeah, I haven't noticed anything that it's
(09:16):
alarming or that he's struggling with the pressure. I think
Seian got to play, you know, over two hundred games
of NRL. Lukes early on in his career, so there
are different different ends of the spectrum. But yeah, I
think Lukes handle situation really well and.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
To Mighty played in the halfs quite a lot last year.
Are you still in your plans for twenty twenty five.
Speaker 4 (09:39):
Yeah, it's going to take a squad to win this
if we want to win it, and some stage s
might is either going to force his way in there
or there's going to be an injury and when he's
if he's ready, we've got a great, great guy in
too Mighty to come in, like I said Sam as
Tana Boyd. So now I think we're very less. There
A lot of clubs love four halfbacks like we've got,
(10:01):
but you need them like they're so important for your depth.
And yeah, he's playing really good footing.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
Any updated time frame on Dellan what in he's a
Easney extra return?
Speaker 5 (10:12):
No?
Speaker 4 (10:12):
No, So Dylan, he goes back to the surgeon this week,
he gets the I think it's the wire, don't hold
me to that wire or screw out this week and
then that just basically starts working on how he can
get his strength and his range back and then we'll
know more. But I think that a round tens the
plan at this stage.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
From a wider point of view, they always say that
you shouldn't ride the highest too high or the lows
too low, And you always strike me as being very level. Yeah,
before a game, during a game, after a game, win
or lose, how do you manage your emotions, particularly after
a defeat.
Speaker 4 (10:45):
I think the only pressure I put on is put
the pressure from myself. I mean, that's what I mean
by that is I don't listen to the outside noise.
I only care about the people in our four war.
So I think when you have high expectations, which I do,
I want to win and be successful, they're only my expectation,
not somebody else's. When you're trying to meet someone else's,
(11:06):
that's when you have fear of loss, or you start
changing who you are and you start getting emotional and
you start losing a little bit. And I'm not perfect
with that either. Like trust me, I think the camera
is pretty kind to me during the game. There's a
few moments there were I'm yelling and screaming, but yeah,
just on the surface, like good examples around one Vegas.
(11:28):
At the end of the day, I was disappointed because
of the occasion but I just looked at it is
round one. There's a long way to go, a weekend,
maybe leagues, a long time. If we win next game,
you know, there's the confidence that we can build on that.
So yeah, I just look at it, probably a bit
different than most people.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
And it's between your four walls, and that's obviously the
best way to do it. You know, you're in a
sanctum of the people you trust. Do you stew on defeat?
Speaker 5 (11:54):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (11:54):
Yeah, it hurts, like it hurts deep down, like when
I say deep down, like it doesn't leave until you
make it right, even like some losses in my life
that I just think, you know, as a player, when
I was playing under seventh Grand Final to now, like
they hurt, they hurt less every day, but they're still there.
And yeah, everyone wants to win and I hate losing,
(12:16):
but you've got to get over yourself and you've got
to get over what the occasion. But sometimes doesn't hurt,
let it sit with you for a bit so you
never want to go back there. But yeah, no, I
struggled just as much as anyone with losing.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
But Mondays must be a hicck of a lot nice
around the playing group, as well. When you get to win,
I can imagine these boys bounding it on a Monday
after all winner. Is that the case?
Speaker 4 (12:38):
Well, when you play Friday nights, which we have last two,
and you'll win. We do a review on Saturday in
a recovery session, and they bounce in tired, so but
they've got a smile on their face. And then they
get a day and a half off and bounce back
in Monday. So I've certainly lost them Friday night and
the rest of the weekend. It doesn't feel the same,
but the boys are in a good mood at the moment.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
Twenty twenty three was an exceptional year for you, twenty
twenty four not so much. What was different last year?
Speaker 4 (13:08):
Well, the results we obviously were like we finished thirteenth
as opposed to fourth. We had a lot of injuries,
but I still hadn't believe even if we had everyone available,
still don't think we would have achieved what we wanted
to achieve. So I certainly think we would have improved.
But the big thing for me is I assumed a
couple of things. If I'm being honest, I thought that
(13:29):
we practice hard, we'll fit. We worked at our game,
there was always a focus. Like I said, getting back
to expectation. Everyone was talking about the external noise of
the nation and everyone thinks we can win the camp.
It was more our own expectations. We were hungry for it,
we wanted to want it, and when we didn't reach
those expectations, you could see that we didn't get over
(13:50):
it well and everyone started to struggle with that moment,
and therefore we didn't defend our trial line or we
carried that moment on. So I think we've done really
well so far this year that when that moment comes,
we get over it quick and we move on, and
we still expect expectations and standards, but we don't have
as much anxiety around them.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
There're awesome big players Eat of this season Shawn Johnson.
We mentioned Tall who Harris in particular. Those two guys,
what kind of hole do they leave, not just on
the field, but around the playing group.
Speaker 4 (14:22):
Yeah, I just think every hole that's left someone feels it.
Like it's a cliche, but like you do not lead
and do not have the space to lead in this
dominant figures like Tahu and sean To who's greatest strength
is that he gives space for other people to lead.
Shawn's greatest strength is he's dominant. He's a halfback he
should be. But at same stage Seawan's he's a team guy,
(14:45):
you know. But they definitely leave a hole and then
you see people step up and want that. So yeah,
it's I don't know. I look at it from an
optimistic point of view that whilst we miss them and
we'd love to have them around, we've got guys like
Luke Metcalfe've got a guy like Aaron Clark who's come
back home and he's got an opportunity to step up
(15:06):
in that space. And you can just see ex playing
grate footy do.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
To Who and Sean and others who have left the
playing groups still have a contribution to make.
Speaker 4 (15:16):
I think they will for the rest of their lives
if they want to, and I think they will if
we allow them to. Simon Mannering's always welcome, Dean bellis
the first Captain's welcome. So I definitely think Toy and
Sean being recent retired and being such good players. I mean,
we had Toy Who around the week leading up tears
(15:37):
kind of his fellwell, which we had in the mainly game,
and Shawn's been a training a few times, so yeah,
and Sean's going to do some work with our younger players.
So like they definitely have a big, big part to play.
It's it's just making sure they feel welcome, which they are,
and just making sure hopefully when they're eighty they're still
having that in some form.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
I'm sure they will. James will be dead by having
a contribution, and there, I'm sure you'll still be around.
James Busha Harris. Can you talk to us a bit
about his influence on the side, what you've seen from
him since his arrival.
Speaker 4 (16:11):
Yeah, I think our standards improved from him just walking
through the door. I just think for even said a word.
I think players saw the way he played the hurd,
his reputation, some of our boys playing Kiwi's with him
and Maldi's and they knew, okay, these are the standards,
and they didn't want to let him down or they
wanted to be part of that. So I think our
(16:33):
intensity of training improved straight away, and I think Fish
definitely drove that by his obviously his actions. We've got
a guy on Mitch Barnett who's also very good at
that already, He's exceptional and hence while they're co captains.
But then when Mitch has an ally in Fish and
both are both are training like that, then everyone's everyone's
(16:55):
got to lift their standards.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
Because it was talk when James Fisher Harris came in
that he might be given the captain, so you might
choose him as your as your captain. Was there a
reluctance to do that because I'd have just added more
to his plate.
Speaker 4 (17:08):
Yep, yeah, and James notis. We had good conversations. I
had no plans on making him captain, just from he
wanted to come here and I prove I didn't want
him to feel like he was our savior. We're going
to put added pressure on his back. But then also
I was also aware of last year how good Mitch's
(17:31):
leadership skills were and what when Tay got injured, how
he lifted and what he created for the team. And
then when I saw fish aarrivee and I saw Mitch
doing what he's doing, and they were doing stuff together,
and also a bit of Yin and Yang, which is
very loud and emotional. James is very quiet, but when
he talks, everyone stops. So I just thought he's a
(17:53):
perfect example of ying and yang. But like my marriage,
and I thought it'd be perfect for them and for
the team and for the nation. So they just made
a great fit. And then I spoke to James. Look,
I wasn't going to do this. I didn't think of
would work, but I think it would be perfect for us.
Do you want it? He wanted it, and I've really
spoken to mention they both wanted to do it together.
Speaker 2 (18:16):
All right, fantastic Andrew, please stay with us. I know
you've got a bit more time to spend with us.
Andrew Webster, Warriors head coach, is our guest in studio
here on Weekend Sport twelve twenty five, Back with more
in just a moment.
Speaker 1 (18:27):
It's more than just a game. Weekend Sport with Jason
Pyne and GJ. Garnobs, New Zealand's most trusted home builder,
News Talks MB.
Speaker 2 (18:37):
Twelve to twenty eight on News Talks, theirb and Weekend
Sport Andrew Webster as our guest in studios to quick
cracket update for you from Napier First Odi New Zealand
against Pakistan coming towards the end of the sixteenth over
New Zealand fifty eighth for three, fifty eight for three, Young,
Kelly and Nichols all out. Chapman and Mitchell are together
at the crease fifty nine for three at the end
(18:58):
of the sixteenth over. So pretty slow going for New Zealand,
having lost the toss and being sent into bat Great
pleasure to have Andrew Webster in studio with us. Ivan
Cleary a guy you worked with at Penrith. You know
him well, no doubt you still have a little bit
to do with him. How much of an influence has
Ivan Cleary been on you?
Speaker 4 (19:18):
A huge Yeah, I mean I haven't obviously. I've learned
a lot of stuff about rugby league. I've obviously learned
a lot of things how you carry yourself. The biggest
thing from my Ivan is I've never seen a guy
have such a good balance between working hard and family.
And I think his family values then transfer into his
(19:40):
work values, so he treats his players like that, he's
family his staff. It's big on connection and everyone being
close together and wanting to come to work every day
just creates a great environment. I learned a lot about
that and I fell out they're close to my values
as well, which is cool. The big thing Ivan's taught
me is you can't copy and paste. You've always got
(20:02):
to be your authentic self. So not necessarily everything he
does going to work for me or for the next coach,
but a bloody learn a lot from him, you know,
So I got I've got to copy.
Speaker 2 (20:12):
If you think, yeah, oh look, absolutely imitations the sincerest
form of flattery. And why wouldn't you when he's been
so successful. You talked about him, you know, mixing balancing
family with his work, but one of his family's at work,
you know, So what have you observed from him? Because
I don't know this to be true, but if I
was coaching my son, I don't know how I would
(20:34):
do that. Well, how does he do it?
Speaker 4 (20:36):
I think the luckiest thing I haven't got his son. Well,
when I say lucky, I mean in the day, I
mean who would It's just how it's happened. But Nathan's
a great playmaker, and you got the coach. So when
the playmaker and the coach discussed tactics, you know that
you've got complete buying and faith in the plan. And
(20:57):
I haven't sitting there in the coach's box looking down
and saying I'm really comfort my son can do this
and then and I just feel like when Ivan talks,
Nathan drives those messages really well. Therefore everyone's got buying,
everyone's going in the same direction. So I think that's
a real advantage on it. I don't think Nathan's position
(21:18):
in the teams have doubted. Is he like when you
coach your son and you're not sure and you're like,
I need to be harder on him because everyone thinks
I'm soft. I don't think Ivan has to do that,
does he? So he's really clear that he can just
they can have a great relationship still a father son
relationship in my opinion, Like you can definitely still see it.
But yeah, they're both very introverted, so it's not like
(21:42):
they're on top of each other every day at work either.
But they they have an awesome relationship, and I think
it's a lot of trust. From a forty point of
view and a personal point of.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
View, you're managing a wide variety of personalities among the
young men in your charge. What is your basic man
management philosophy?
Speaker 4 (22:05):
Well, people's my thing, you know, That's why I want
to do the job. I enjoyed people. If I if
I had to cut vision, come up with tactics and
then pass it to somebody and then they go deliver
it and I don't even talk to that person. I
wouldn't enjoy it, just because that's the most exciting part
having an impact on someone's life and you know, helping
(22:27):
people grow and as a result everyone does.
Speaker 2 (22:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (22:32):
My man management style is like work with people, not
on top of them or against them. I'll rarely give
a spray, but I'm firm. So when I raise my
voice or I make a point, I feel like it's clear.
Clarity is my whole thing. Sorry, my voice is gone.
But if you're clear and what your roles and expectations
(22:55):
are and you feel like you have to say in
something and you feel empowered and you feel belong loved
and you're going to excel.
Speaker 2 (23:01):
Yeah, absolutely. Just are the philosophies that that work across
everybody or is everyone really different from one another?
Speaker 4 (23:11):
I think if you treat people well and develop people
that are work in any environment doesn't mean you can't
be really brutally honest as well. But I think also too,
a toxic environment will only work for so long. Like
I've seen harsh, aggressive environments where they have short term
(23:34):
goal gains, but long term they always fail. They fall
apart very quickly. But you can see a real spiking.
People are on their toes. People are worried. I better
be good at this otherwise this is going to happen.
But you can't sustain.
Speaker 2 (23:48):
The cam Georgian here last year and I asked them
this question. I ask you was well. I asked him
whether he thought a sporting franchise or any organization could
survive one dickhead.
Speaker 4 (24:00):
He said no, do you agree? I think no digad
policy you will always give you a best chance of success,
that's for sure. I think the thing is sometimes if
there's a guy who's a bit rough around the edges
and you get an amazing culture and establish one, they
could help grow that person and do even better person.
(24:22):
But if they're fundamentally deep down to dicket and always
going to be one, then they don't there shouldn't be
in your organization, or if they are, they shouldn't be
there for long.
Speaker 2 (24:32):
Players always talk about having a why. I'm sure coaches
do as well. You alluded to it before. I think
it's based around the people that you work with, the
men that you work alongside. Those so your influence on
a day to day basis. Is that your why or
is it greater than that? Why do you do this well?
Speaker 4 (24:49):
Other different wise? Now, I think your why changes as
you go. My why has not been I want to
be a head coach for any other reason? Then I
just feel like you want that feeling of I think
I'd be good at it. I feel like if you
enjoy your job and you reap rewards, then you get
that self satisfaction. I'm not in it for the pats
(25:11):
on the back. If I'm being honest from everyone else,
it's it's just like I would love to create an
environment where everyone loves coming to work and they can
be their best and succeed. And that is so self satisfy.
That is so satisfying to be a part of that
see other people grow, and that's just my thing. That's
my wife. I love the game like I generally love footy.
(25:32):
I'd be doing it for nothing, you know, in the
old days. I'm sure they all coach, you know, for
no money. But I'd be one of those guys, like
I generally love rugby league and I love people. But yeah,
for my family as well, like I for my mum
and dad, my brother and sister, and my wife, my
little boy, like, I'd like to making them proud and
(25:54):
one day they can see mom my Dad always Mum
and Dad always to say, if you find something that
you're passionate about, if you chase it, and that if
that becomes your job, you're pretty lucky. And I don't
know if enough people have that in their life. So
if I can teach my son that that, that'd be
pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (26:10):
How do you how do you switch off?
Speaker 4 (26:15):
Quite easy? Got almost a two year old little boy
walk in the door. He's smiling at me or he's
blowing up at me. You got to do this, Dad,
come on more?
Speaker 5 (26:27):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (26:27):
And my wife like we well yeah. And my friends
like I'm a very social person, you know. We love
going in for lunched in those type of things. It's
hard to get a babysit, but we've got some great
ones here in Auckland that look after Max every time
at the time, but just spending time with family friends.
The big one for me has got the hobbies. I'd
(26:48):
love to play golf more. I don't do that enough,
so I shouldn't even say that anymore because I don't play.
It's like I'm lying to all the all the all
the listeners pay for a year, yea, how often do
you play with you twice in two and a half years. Yeah,
it's not very good.
Speaker 5 (27:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (27:05):
And I love horse, Yeah, not so much the game
inside of it.
Speaker 5 (27:08):
I love the.
Speaker 4 (27:10):
Tactical side, the breeding side of it. Yeah, that's really
that's a great distraction for me.
Speaker 2 (27:15):
All right, let's end back at the start where we
are now with a season stretching ahead of us. Yep,
I feel confident about twenty twenty five.
Speaker 4 (27:23):
Yeah, definitely. I think the biggest thing I've learned about
creating our own expectation on ourselves is yeah, it's boring,
but don't look too far ahead. The reason why I
talk about that right now is we've been in this
situation last year. I think we lost the first round
of the year, we even lost the second, and then
we went on I saw we won the second, and
(27:44):
then we went on a run and we won like
three or three or four in a row. And this
is our years. It's just so such a marathon, you know.
But we've been confident and confident last year. We've been
confidence since day one. But there's certainly no overconfidence there
and we're not taking anything for granted, we've got so
much work to do, but we're had a group of
players that they're all buying. You know, they all care
(28:06):
about this country, they care about the results. You know,
they want to play for the Warriors. They do their best.
So yeah, if we can carry that on all year
and make sure we keep putting our energy in the
right stuff, and then we should have a good season.
Speaker 2 (28:20):
Last question is around the connection to your fans. Yep,
how important is that and how important are your fans
to you?
Speaker 4 (28:27):
Yeah, Well, getting back to the why a bit like
I'm an Australian. I came back to this club after
working here for two years ago, eight years ago, so
I had a connection here Ben like, and I didn't
want to be a head coach at an in club.
I wanted to be where I felt like I would
fit and for some reason, I feel like I fit
here and I hope that everyone feels the same. So
(28:49):
then coming back then my wife was about, you know,
I just want to improve people and everyone to be happy,
to create a great environment that with people can be
the best. And then for I know it, like I
want the fans to taste that success but more like
Grand finals. That's our goal, Like I can promise every
on that, but the real goal is sustained success on
(29:11):
the fans being proud of the way the boys play
even when we're not at our best, like and that's
I feel like last year we came thirteenth, but we
sold it out every week. There were still they still
saw effort, they still saw care, they still saw a
team that they wanted to come and support. So yeah,
they're they're part of my wire, the fans, and you
know we're taking a game to christ Church in a
(29:31):
couple of weeks, we go to Australia. We're so well supported,
like we go I'm not going to mention the teams.
We go to away games and we've got more fans
than them sometimes Like that's we're very proud of that
as a club and I'm very proud to be a
part of it. So they're huge for us.
Speaker 2 (29:46):
Yeah, definitely, Andrew, thanks for stopping in. Great to see
you know, you're a busy man. All the best on
behalf of our audience for the rest of twenty twenty five.
Hope we can we can catch up again.
Speaker 4 (29:55):
So thank you so much for having me and thanks
for everyone, No.
Speaker 2 (29:58):
Thanks for joining us. We'll be Andrew Webster, their head
coach of the Warriors. Great to get the chance to
spend an extended period of time with them, chance to
react to anything you heard there from Andrew Webster over
the last half an hour or so eight hundred and
eighty ten eighty anything in particular that stood out pretty
impressive bloke. Right as he leaves the studio, I feel
(30:21):
like I could listen to Andrew Webster talk all day, Really,
Warriors fans, does twenty twenty five feel more like twenty
twenty three or twenty twenty four to you? We all
know how good twenty twenty three was last year? Not
so much. Two losses at the start, then three wins
(30:43):
and things were going along okay, then a draw with Manly,
but then a slump, four losses, and even though they
started to win again after that, it never really recaptured
what we saw in twenty twenty three. How does twenty
twenty five feel to you, Warriors fans? I would love
to hear from you. Oh, eight hundred eighty ten eighty
ninet two nine two one text back with some of
(31:04):
your calls after this nineteen away from one on news
Talk SEB.
Speaker 1 (31:08):
The Tough Questions after the weekend Sport with Jason Pyne
and GJ. Gunnerholmes, New Zealand's most trusted home builders.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
Six time away from one great to have an extended
interview with our webby says this text. I'm glad you've
got on a glass of water. Yeah battling, that wasn't
he But he's a great chat. Yeah, we should have
had water there at the start. We'll organize that next time.
God I Greg afternoons.
Speaker 6 (31:34):
I didn't hear the full interview. I just caught the
taal end of it. But you asked a question about
how to How do I feel about the upcoming season?
I think being a Warrior supporter is the hardest. It's
the hardest team to support, but it's also the best
(31:55):
team to support. Like you turn up, we can we
get expecting the team to do the best, and even
though sometimes they're best and good enough, through pore handling,
(32:18):
bad decision making, all the rest of it. It's like players.
Players don't go out on a field to play bad.
And I think that this year it's sort of a
little bit between both seasons. The expectation still goes back
(32:41):
to twenty three, but you're always have it in your
mind of twenty twenty four. Now, the first game in
Las Vegas, we sort of should really just put that
to one side because foreign environment, huge travel, even though
(33:01):
both teams had to travel there, I think probably the
team as a group were maybe a bit overawed by
the whole experience, and then you move to game two.
In game three where they beat probably two of the
best scenes in the competition. Canber have also had losses
(33:23):
after they beat us. But I like to think that
this year we will finish in the top eight. I
don't think we will finish as high as we did
in twenty twenty three, but maybe fifth, and then build
on getting to those finals from there.
Speaker 2 (33:46):
I love your description, Greg, the hardest team to support,
but the best team to support. You've just basically described
sports fandom. I think. I know there are a lot
of fans listening who support a variety of different teams
and a lot of codes, and look, we can't all
be you know, successful year on year on year. Hard
to support, but great to support makes the makes the
(34:06):
highser Well, I was going to say, heck of a
lot better. I'm sure you'd like a few more of them.
But it does make the high points quite invigorating, doesn't it.
Speaker 6 (34:15):
Yeah, it does. And I always go back to the
original ketch cry for the Warriors, which was when DV
sponsored them, and basically a true Warriors van is loyal
to the bitter ends.
Speaker 2 (34:32):
Yes, love it, Greg, And you sound like you are.
I love you. I love your your measured approach to
all of this. I like you. I think we all
do you know, hope for a twenty twenty five that
is similar to a twenty twenty three. Yeah, I'm a
bit like you. I think twenty twenty three didn't necessarily
come out of the blue, but I think there was
a there was a degree of of surprise at how
(34:54):
high the Warriors finished what they were fourth, weren't they
in twenty twenty three last year by comparison, extremely disappointing. Yeah,
I feel like wins over the Sea Eagles and the Roosters.
As you say, two the better sides going around are
a nice springboard Tigers tomorrow, and then I think we'll
find out a bit about the team when they take
on the Storm next weekend. Although the way the Storm
(35:15):
are playing, maybe you don't take it as a as
a guide then Broncos Nights Cowboys. Thanks Greg, I appreciate
your court Brent.
Speaker 7 (35:22):
Hello, yeah, mate, I like that last guy. I only
caught the tail end of the interview with Andrew Webster,
but I'm quite excited about the season either that two
good ones will be both at home. I think to
my night's game will be more of a see where
they're at and coming up against the red hot Tigers
side at Cameltown and they have twenty one thousand fans
(35:46):
parenting from the Tigers, and I just hope they don't
don't get tailed up and another thing. So I just
hope they don't miss and walk too much, because that's
losing him hasn't men too much of a disrupting for them.
But yes, I can get over the Tigers tomorrow. It
will be a really good game to see where they're at.
(36:08):
I think they're going by the week the following week
and then then they play the Storm. But yeah, I
just hope they can get over the Tigers tomorrow night.
I'm really looking forward to it.
Speaker 2 (36:16):
Yes, I mine. I think I think you're sir right, Breann.
I think it will give us a very good gauge.
I mean, yes, the Tigers have been good, but there
are two wins have been against teams who are a
bit down on their luck. Really, I mean, they probably
don't feel as though they've been really really tested either,
although I think they've They lost their first upgame and
they ten eight at home against the Knights, but then
you know, wins in the last two weeks over the
(36:39):
Eels and the Dolphins, both away, which I guess is
a feather in their cap. But I reckon they'll find
out a bit about themselves tomorrow the Tigers when they
take on the Warriors. I'd imagine that they'll be interested
West Tigers fans to see how they're teams shaping up.
Speaker 7 (36:52):
And I just hope that the Warriors kind of and
washing them from the start, because some saw what happened
to the Breakers when they've paid manly, they've got absolutely smashed.
And if the teams that they're playing a more favent TV,
I'll come was thinking that these rests can be a
bit masswaters and I just hope they're Warriors doing it.
Too many calls go against them, because if they two
(37:13):
could be a long life to them.
Speaker 2 (37:15):
Indeed, Brent I hope the same, Thanks mate. The TV
tells us that the Tigers are favorites tomorrow a dollar
sixty against two thirty five. I don't think that's bad
money for the Warriors. Yes, they're two wins so far
the season, have both been at home, but they've been
against good sides. Look, I mean, I'm pretty sure I
wasn't alone in thinking when that team came back from
(37:37):
Vegas having put together the performance they did against the Raiders,
I wouldn't have been the only one who was worried
about the arrival of the Sea Eagles, followed by the
arrival of the Roosters at Go Media Stadium in the
following two weeks. But as it turned out, we needn't
have worried. Thirty six sixteen and then fourteen six in
a bit of a grind last week. But the fact
that across those two games, just the twenty two points
(38:00):
conceded across both games combined compared to the thirty against
the Raiders over in Vegas, I think is cause for
major optimism. You're right about the buy as well, Brent
Iden picked up on that. So it's the Tigers tomorrow,
then the bye, and then on the afternoon of Sunday,
April the thirteenth. It's the storm away. I mean, you
(38:23):
look at the storm and you think, man, is anybody
touching them? Penrith Panthers have lost their last three in
a row, so they're clearly not the force of previous years.
It feels like the storm and then a bunch of teams,
and that's probably okay. Look at one team's going to
clear out like the storm, look as though they're going
to then that's probably okay. But if there's a bunch
of teams in behind them, including the Warriors, then you know,
(38:46):
maybe that's going to give us a good gauge. After that,
the Broncos and then the Knights. Yeah, so the storm
of the Broncos currently the top two, and the Warriors
have them after tomorrow in the next two games. So
after six rounds, seven rounds, we're going to have a
fairly good idea, aren't we. On text from Matt Andrew Webster.
Great interviews with a great head on his shoulders who
(39:09):
seems to care about all the right things, great combination
and great things ahead for the Warriors, I think, says
mad and from Joe enjoyed the interview with Webbe such
a positive person who wants the club to be successful.
It's his third year of this coaching tenure. He is
still the right man for the job. With the loss
of so many experienced players, it feels like twenty twenty
three when there were injuries throughout the season and it's
(39:32):
like next man up attitude again. As he mentioned, can't
underestimate while Fisher Harris is brought to the club similar
to Kevin Campion in the early two thousands. Thank you
Joe for your text. Haight Away from one the black
Caps seventy nine for three after twenty one overs batting
first against Pakistan and Napier back in a moment on
News Talk SAB.
Speaker 5 (39:53):
When it's down to the line.
Speaker 1 (39:54):
You made a call on eight ten eighty Weekend Sport
with Jason Hine News Talks.
Speaker 2 (40:00):
Hev coming up four to one after the news that one.
I think we'll kick on because we haven't been able
to get everybody on the air to talk Warriors and
talk Andrew Webster's influence on this team. It was great
to get the chance to chat to them over such
an extended period. When I get that opportunity very often,
so great to see him in studio, so we'll take
some more of your calls after one o'clock on that.
Also between one and two, Andrew Pragnell's on the show
(40:21):
CEO of New Zealand Football. They are through the All
Whites to the World Cup next year, So what has
to happen between now and then to give the All
Whites the best possible preparation as head off to the
World Cup next year, not just to participate, not just
to make up the numbers, but to get out of
a group, to go further than the All Whites of
twenty ten or nineteen eighty two, to win some matches
(40:43):
over there. For me, it's well, not straightforward, but certainly
a big plank of it is lots of games between
now when when they head off. There are five international
windows available between now and next June, two matches and each.
So be keen the heir from Andrew Pragnell whether all
five are being targeted for matches and are we going
to see the All Whites back at home? I'd love
(41:04):
to see a fair well match of some sort perhaps
in March of next year. So Andrew Pragnell and more
of your calls on Andrew Webster after one o'clock.
Speaker 1 (41:12):
The only place to discuss the biggest fours issues on
and after fields. It's all on WI joons Ford with
Jason Vaine on your home of Sport in New York
one o seven.
Speaker 2 (41:26):
Welcome into the show. This is Weekend Sport on News Talk.
Said b I'm Jason Pine with Andy McDonald alongside with
you until three talking Sport. Now before three o'clock the auction,
the hottest trade Me item of twenty twenty five will close.
This is Sam Ruth's shoes that he ran the sub
Formanut Mylin. Now we spoke to dad Benruth. Was that
(41:50):
last week or the week before, I can't remember. They
were sent to blend into one, but we spoke to
Ben Ruth about Sam's spikes only used once the shoes
he was wearing when he ran sub four minutes for
the mile and become the youngest person in the history
of the world to do that. The spikes have been
(42:12):
on trade Me. Now Ben Ruth, Sam's dad has agreed
to change the closing time of the auction to two
forty this afternoon, which is just before our show closes.
So we're going to join Ben to maybe get a
final result at the moment. Sam Ruth's used spikes for
(42:36):
just under four minutes, use ten four hundred and eight
dollars and thirty five cents four hundred and eight dollars
thirty five, So there's still about an hour and a
half until the auction closes. If you're of the mood
to bid on a significant piece of New Zealand track
and field memorabilia, and who knows what these shoes might
(42:57):
be worth in the years ahead, depending on what Sam
goes on to do. And you've got to spa a
ten and a half grand line around gathering dust not
your mark for any then jump on trade me. I'm
just looking at the bid history. It was kind of
an around the six seven eight thousand dollar mark this
item up until around dinner time on Thursday, and then
(43:20):
a bidder came in and from what I can see,
it was their first bid and took it from eighty
one hundred and fifty up to ten grand. It's like
those auctions you go to, you know, you've been to these,
you know, fundraising lunches, I'm sure or whatever, and you
know bidding's going up in increments of whatever it is,
and then somebody just you know, puts the hand of
(43:41):
it says ten grand. Well, that's what this bidder has
done ten grand. However, they are not the leading bidder.
Somebody's gone and I don't know how it's got to
these unusual figures ten thousand, four hundred and eight dollars
and thirty five cents for Sam Ruth's shoes. Anyway, we'll
talk to to Ben ruthan around an hour and a
half and hopefully get a final. A final tally is
(44:05):
they raise some money to to put towards Craig Kirkwood
and Sam Tanner, who were two instrumental figures in Sam
Ruth's development. He's running tonight as well. He's running over
in Australia. I was doing a bit of reading about
this earlier on today and it's the fifteen hundred meter
(44:26):
he's racing for another fifteen hundred meters world age record
tonight in Melbourne. And the best professional men's field that's
been assembled for many years. Sam is ranked second last
in the field by time, so you can just tell
the caliber of the field from that. But yeah, we'll
talk more about that in the next hour and a
(44:46):
half or in about an hour and a half from now.
Andrew Pragnell is on the show this hour as well.
He is the CEO of New Zealand Football. The All
Whites have safely qualified through Oceania for the expanded World
Cup next year, so that's that box ticked. How now
can they best prepare themselves for the trip to North
(45:07):
America next year? And one of the I guess key
ways would be games. So are there games planned? I
know there are two locked in for June, but there
are five windows between now in the World Cup ten
possible games. Three are locked in two middle of the
year and then I think it's Ukraine and the Ivory
Coast in the middle of the year in a tournament
(45:28):
in Canada and then Norway at the back end of
the year and one of the windows. But are there
more planned? And will they play at home they are Whites,
because I think that would be tremendous if they had
the opportunity to come back here, maybe even in the
March window before they head off and get the chance
to farewell, farewell they're fans and for fans here to
(45:48):
wish them all the best. I tell you what would
be great would be a home and away series against
Australia that should happen regularly anyway, but I think that'd
be a cool idea in March of next year, provided
they qualify, which it looks as though they will home
and away window in March of next year against Australia.
Make it happen. It happened just before we move on
New Zealand one hundred and seven for three batting first
(46:10):
against Pakistan and Napier. It's been pretty slow going for
the Black Apps, although Darrel Mitchell and Mark Chapman have
come together and steadied things slightly. In fact more than slightly.
They've done a pretty good job of putting together a
fourth wicket partnership. The third wicket fell at fifty young
Kelly on debut and Nichols all out by the time
(46:33):
there were fifty on the board, so this partnership unbroken
on fifty seven. Daryl Mitchell sixteen off thirty seven balls,
Mark Chapman thirty five off fifty three. So it's not
t twenty pace, but it is a one day International
and they were sentence, so we'll keep eyes on that
for you. Before one o'clock we talked, In fact right
for most of the twelve o'clock hour, we talked to
Andrew Webster, head coach of the New Zealand Warriors, and
(46:56):
there was a lot to unpack there. He talked about
this season, He talked about his coaching philosophy, He talked
about the influence that Ivan Cleary has had on him,
and lots of other things as well. We couldn't get
everybody on the year before one, so we are going
to keep the lines open for a little bit longer
to talk from rugby league, in particular Warriors fans. I
asked the question, and I'd be keen to hear from you.
Where the twenty twenty five and its early stages three
(47:19):
games in feels feels better than twenty twenty four for starters?
And does it feel like twenty twenty three? We all
know how good the Warriors were in twenty three, a
fourth placed finish, best for ages. Andrew Webster's first year
came in made a massive difference last year. It was
by comparison pretty disappointing stuff, missing the top eight by
(47:39):
quite some distance. So what does it feel like this
time around? How does twenty twenty five feel to you?
Game tomorrow against the West Tigers, then the bye, then Melbourne?
So how does it feel at the moment. And I'd
be interested to know as well how significant a loss
Dylan Walker is for you. He's been in the seventeen
(47:59):
the first three games of the year, has been granted
and earlier released to go back home, and I think, look,
before we move on, it's the right decision, the right
decision to let him go. Obviously unfortunate from the Warriors
in an on field sense, but Dylan's family are back
in Australia. They move back there about eight months ago.
(48:20):
He's got two young boys and you can only live
apart from your family for so long. It's got to
the point clearly where he needs to be around his
family and his sons want their dad there. So I
think it's the right decision. And as Cameron George said
during the week, this sort of thing works both ways.
(48:42):
There have been examples of players moving to the Warriors
and leaving their contracts with Australian clubs because of family
reasons back here in New Zealand. So I think it's
the right decision. But how big a loss is Dylan
Walker and who do you see as as the most
obvious replacement for his on field services? Eight hundred and
(49:05):
eighty ten eighty and on the sea in a hit.
Just want to play your back Andrew Webster. I want
to ask them how confident he felt about the season
he hit.
Speaker 4 (49:13):
The biggest thing I've learned about creating our own expectation
on ourselves is yeah, it's boring, but don't look too
far ahead. The reason why I talk about that right
now is we've been in this situation last year. I
think we lost the first round of the year, we
even lost the second, and then we went on I
saw sorry, we won the second and then we went
on a run and we won like three or three
or four in a row. And this is our years.
(49:35):
It's just so such a marathon, you know. But we've
been confident and confident last year. We've been confidence since
day one. But there's certainly no over confidence there. And
we're not taking anything for granted. We've got so much
work to do, but we're in a group of players
that they're all buying. You know, they all care about
this country, they care about the results. You know, they
(49:55):
want to play for the Warriors. They do their best.
So yeah, if we can carry that on all year
and make sure we keep putting our energy to the
right stuff, then we should have a good season.
Speaker 2 (50:06):
Andrew Webster, talking about the season ahead on text, Paul says, Piney,
the guy's a class act who I think will win
us a premiership and saying that I did disagree, says
Paul on what he said about our kicking game and
the fact it's been good. I think there's room for
improvement there as our fifth tackle option while in the
opposition territory is a predictable chip to the corner. I'd
like to see more variation coming back the other way,
(50:29):
balls into the endgual. How about one of these guys
developing a high knuckle or spiral bomb. Piney, get this right,
says Paul, and we are a top sixteen tomorrow. By
the way, a four point game with the buye up.
The was thanks Paul, good stuff, Hello.
Speaker 8 (50:43):
Joe, Yeah day Bilani.
Speaker 9 (50:49):
PHYLM.
Speaker 8 (50:49):
Walker's a loss, but he's got a big loss, beigcause
you've got Aaron Clark in now. And Aaron Clark is
very similar to Harris and very similar to PHILM.
Speaker 6 (51:01):
Walker.
Speaker 8 (51:02):
What Aaron Clark does as he runs a football at
the at the defense like like Dylan Waukee used to do.
But he's playing thirteen and he's on there and he
he the games I've seen him play at thirteen, he's
making a hell of a lot of tackles. He reminds
me of Kevin Campion and Michael Luck those guys. You know,
(51:23):
he's a hard worker. Nothing against Dylan Walker, not he
was playing really well, but he does the same thing
and Clark. If you watch him, he'll run into the
defence and what he does then when he passes to Medcalf,
he gives Medcalf more space, which is good for Metcalf
because then he opens up more spaces for Snell, Tavita, Harris,
(51:46):
the five eight, and they will they will come into
the game a lot more and have more more space,
and medcalfs got a lot of speed. I sent this
on the other day on another station that Metcalf to me,
as long as he doesn't get in it will be
one of the best halves in this competition in the
next three or four years.
Speaker 2 (52:08):
Well he's got Yeah, Joe, I hope you're right, because
because I really like the look of Luke Metcalf and
it's big boots to fill with Seawan Johnson gone. But yeah,
you can see the raw materials there.
Speaker 8 (52:21):
Oh, without of doubt. He's a different player to Shawn Johnson.
I mean guys like Sewan Johnson there only come come
along once in a blue moon, if you know what
I mean. I mean Johnson was just unbelievable. And the
guy that's similar to us to Johnson, who I think
will end up five eight and will be one of
the best five eighthss came to a picky. He's got
(52:44):
all the skills. He's got speed, he's got a step,
he's tough, he tackles well, he thinks well. He will
end up five eight, whether it's for the Warriors, that'll
be his best position. He's only young now, obviously, and
yet doubt Metcalf. As long as he doesn't get injured,
he's going to be right up here too.
Speaker 2 (53:04):
He's yeah, tain't a pick, He's yeah, wow, yeah, okay,
without a doubt.
Speaker 8 (53:13):
You know what, you know what, pony, because I played
five eight when I played league, and I was I
wasn't quick, but I had a step. And this guy's
got a step and he's quick off the mark. You
put him at five eight and you put you give
him a lot of ball. He watch winning runs. He's
so dangerous. He's like two of USA shick. He's got
that step right right at the last minute when he
comes into guys and two guys have to tackle him.
(53:35):
That's why two of us a ship's so good on
the wing, because two guys have to tackle them because
he steps one guy and the other guy hesitates and
then comes across. Very rarely does one guy tackle two
of us a shick because at the last minute he's
got that step. And playing two pickies, that's got the
same He's got a step and he's got great exhilaration.
(53:57):
Sean Johnson had the same, very good step and then
gone and and very hard to compromise when you're playing
against that. Without a doubt.
Speaker 2 (54:06):
Oh okay, look I'll look out for that. I mean,
who knows there might be a metcalf toe a picky combo.
We say, are you happy enough with Chanelle Harris Tavita
there in the meantime?
Speaker 8 (54:16):
Oh, without a doubt. Chanel seat is very tough, very
very good footballer. Uh doesn't shine from anything and will
be at the five eight as the Warriors for a while.
But if if he gets injured or something happens, paying
tang to a Picky could go there, go there tomorrow
and my eyes and I think that's where tag to
(54:38):
a Picky will end up. But Tavita Harris is there
at the moment.
Speaker 5 (54:43):
And very good.
Speaker 8 (54:44):
Does everything right. Just their kicking game. They need to
be a bit more smart around the kicking game. You
know when they just kick the ball and fish tackle.
Quite often they just kick it up in the air
to the to the wingers. And when you've got wingers
that take the ball some of these wingers do, you've
got to you've got a very your kicks piney, you know,
kick it along the ground like gubble kick. If you
(55:05):
watch last night the Broncos half back Adam Reynolds, he
kicked a lot along the ground and that, and it
just makes it just makes it a little bit more difficult.
The chances in the winger dropping the ball obviously not much,
but it can happen because of the bounce of the ball.
And they just got to use their smarts a little
bit more so, just putting up a high kick to
(55:27):
these guys at fall back and just going to trying
to challenge for it, because you've got to put that
high kick up perfect and if it goes too long,
They have too much space. That's all I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (55:38):
No, Joe, I love your expertise. Mate, You've obviously you know,
you've played the game, you know a lot about it.
You've given me a bit to think about it. I'd
never even thought of tantel picky as a as a
five eight fall back year winger. Yeah, never thought of it.
I'm look forward to seeing it, mate, I look forward
to seeing it. And just on Aaron Clark, oh, I
know you're rung to talk about initially.
Speaker 10 (55:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (55:55):
Look, I've been utterly impressed with him as well. So
you look at the team and you think, you know what,
it's got a bit about it. It's got a bit
about it because they can win tomorrow, go into the
buy of the back of three straight wins. As Andrew
Webster said, it's a marathon at AINUS Sprints, and no
regular season is. But if they can get a win tomorrow,
(56:16):
it feels more and more if they can get a
win tomorrow, that they can just kind of it's in
the review mirror anyway, but Vegas can be further back
in the in the review mirror, it can almost be
like a like a false start like a game that
you just say, okay, well that actually you know that
wasn't us. This is us Tigers tomorrow. Looking forward to it.
A little bit more time to chat rugby league if
(56:38):
you'd like to. We do have to get to Andrew Pragnell.
But just done the final, but I wanted to play
from Andrew Webster was his final comment on the fans
of the Warriors and how important they are to the team.
Speaker 5 (56:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (56:49):
Well, getting back to the wire a bit like I'm
an Australian. I came back to this club after working
here for two years ago, eight years ago, so I
had a connection here then, like and I didn't want
to be a head coach at an in club. I
wanted to be where I felt like I would I
would fit and for some and I feel like I
fit here and I hope that everyone feels the same.
(57:11):
So then coming back then, my wife was about, you know,
I just want to improve people, want everyone to be happy,
create a great environment that people can be the best.
And then before I know it, like I want the
fans to taste that success, but more like grand finals
that's our goal, Like I can promise everyone that, but
the real goal is sustained success on the fans being
(57:33):
proud of the way the boys play even when we're
not at our best, like and that's I feel like
last year we came thirteenth, but we sold it out
every week. There were still they still saw effort, they
still saw care, They're still sort of team that they
wanted to come and support. So yeah, they're they're part
of my wide the fans and you know we're taking
a game to christ Church in a couple of weeks.
(57:55):
We go to Australia, was so well supported, like we go.
I'm not going to mention the teams. We go to
away games and we've got more fans in them sometimes
like that's We're very proud of that as a club
and I'm very proud to be a part of it.
So they huge for us. Definitely.
Speaker 2 (58:09):
It's Andrew Webster, who we spoke to last hour. Greex's
pint ow will just get my perspective. And on the
Dylan Walker scenario, waited for three games into the season
before making this decision. He was paid over the off season.
I just think it would have been a bet to
look for him to up stumps earlier and give the
Warriors a bit more time to make a decision on
whether they replace him or promote people from within. But
he must have had a feeling from the eight months
(58:31):
that his family has been in Sydney. He couldn't do it.
That's the only thing I say, Yeah, Greg, I think
he probably wanted it to work. Well, I'm almost certain
that he did, and he probably thought, look, this is tough,
but I'm going to give it a crack. I'm contracted
to the Warriors. I want to honor that contract. I'll
give it a go. Let's give it a go and
see if we can make this long distance work. But well,
(58:51):
anybody who's got kids will know that any time away
from them, particularly when they're young, is well, it's impossible
to get back for starters, and it can be very
very difficult. Indeed, And if that part of your life's
not going well, then I don't think you can possibly
function to your full potential in the work part of
(59:12):
your life, be it sport or otherwise. I think it's
the right decision for Dylan Walker to go, and I
think Aaron Clark's performances, particularly in the last two games,
have given the Warriors comfort that actually we're going to
be okay. We're going to be okay. News talks here
be one twenty five quick update from McLain Park in Napier,
(59:34):
where this partnership between Chapman and Mitchell continues to grow
to the point that it's now worth ninety six unbroken
New Zealand one forty six for three after twenty nine
to fifty overs, Chapman fifty nine not out of sixty five,
Mitchell a little more circumspect twenty nine unbeaten off forty five,
but New Zealand approaching the thirty over mark one forty
(59:55):
six for three, one forty six for three, So on
target for we'd have to think something close to three
hundred after being sent in. Not too bad, not too bad.
It's going to talk some football next. The All Whites
are through to the World Cup next year off the
back of that win over New Caledonia eventually on Monday
night at Eden Park. So how can they best be
(01:00:16):
set up for success? New Zealand Football CEO Andrew Pregnell
going to join us right after this.
Speaker 1 (01:00:22):
The biggest things in sports are on Weekend Sports with
Jason Pain and GJ. Gunnerhomes New Zealand's most trusted home
builder News Talks.
Speaker 11 (01:00:31):
They'd be in the fourth steps of Sumner and Rufer,
of Turner and Herbert Off Neilson and Fissilitch of Reed
and Smelt of Spain in nineteen eighty two, South Africa
twenty ten and now the United States, Canada and Mexico
twenty twenty six.
Speaker 2 (01:00:50):
Yes, the All Whites securing their passage to the FIFA
World Cup next year, beating New Caledonia three nil in
the Oceania qualifying final at Eden Park on Monday night.
Eventually that was it was nil all after an hour.
But I think they eventually got the job done. I
think we all thought that they would and so it
proved to be. But how now can the side be
(01:01:12):
given the best preparation to succeed in North America next June.
New Zealand football CEO Andrew Pragnell is with us to
answer that question. Actually, before we do, Andrew, will you
at all nervous as it was playing out on Monday
night when it was goals for the best part of
an hour.
Speaker 5 (01:01:30):
Yeah, okay.
Speaker 3 (01:01:31):
It was wearing one of the footbits on my wrist
and the heart rate was going at about the same
as a decent spot sort of run. So yes, that's
texteen minutes were pretty tense. You know, we all know
football is a game of type margins and anything can happen,
so but great to see the boys get the job done.
Speaker 2 (01:01:48):
Absolutely well. If we look ahead now, there are five
fee for windows between now and the World Cup in
the middle of next year. How keen are you to
have the All Whites play in most or all of
those windows.
Speaker 3 (01:02:01):
Yeah, we'll definitely be playing in every single one without
a doubt. And qualifying he gives us more opportunity too,
so there will be those who are beginning to qualify
as obviously the hosts, So yeah, absolutely, and we're looking
for you know, obviously a ranger styles, we're looking for
a range of locations or you know, definitely targeting the
(01:02:21):
North America in the in the area in which we've
qualified into.
Speaker 5 (01:02:25):
And obviously we're looking at high quality opposition.
Speaker 3 (01:02:27):
We are our teams much better than we their current
ranking and they can do things that this world cut.
Speaker 2 (01:02:32):
Do you think the All Whites will be an attractive
proposition for potential opponents.
Speaker 3 (01:02:37):
Yeah, I think we've shown in the last couple of
years as we've begun to play you know to Nazia's,
Egypt's Guitars, US Mexicos that we are an appealing team.
We're you know, we're one thing about Kiwi's in the
supplies beyond the football spaces. We were used to traveling
and going on the road and we're willing to move,
so we're adaptable and flexible. But also people know that
(01:03:01):
we've got four players on the Premier League clubs. They
know we've got one of the best strikers in the
world and we've shown it, I think in the type
of opposition we've got, so I expect you it'll be
predominantly top fifty opposition. But also looking at styles, and
the draw is in December this year, and so stand
(01:03:21):
instead of procedure for the drawers, everyone has their phones
at hand and you're generally looking to play light for
like opposition depending on what you get out of the drawer.
Speaker 5 (01:03:30):
So that'll be interesting.
Speaker 2 (01:03:31):
Also, of course, the majority of the windows fall before
the draw, don't they. So I guess you can't really
take that into account for the windows this year. But
how does it all work, Andrew? I mean, you don't
just pick up the phone to the CEO of another football,
you know Federation and say hey, do you fancy your game?
How does it all work logistically?
Speaker 5 (01:03:51):
As a real.
Speaker 3 (01:03:52):
Mixed approach, we've got believe it or not sometimes that
it does happen. So there's there is a CEO to
CEO and some of our match fixtures are arranged from
letters direct from the as the General Secretary as they
call them to the General Secretary. Some of them them
are where we have strong.
Speaker 5 (01:04:08):
Relationships, particularly around Asia Pacific.
Speaker 3 (01:04:10):
We've got now people in our management team who have
strong work relationships around that sort of particularly in that
Pacific room space AFC and conk V and then we've
got manch agents as well, so.
Speaker 5 (01:04:26):
You shid a real range.
Speaker 3 (01:04:27):
Of match agents and it's a bit like sometimes you
do them with car dealer type characters and other times
you're no disrespect to cardialists. But you know there's a
there's a real array of people in there and so yeah,
there's a whole different message. But I expect that we'll
be rereaching out pretty much.
Speaker 5 (01:04:44):
The night of the drawer to help organize opposition.
Speaker 2 (01:04:47):
How likely or not is it that we'll see the
all Whites at home again before the world cut.
Speaker 5 (01:04:54):
There's probable.
Speaker 3 (01:04:54):
I mean, it's certainly performance has to take the paramount
consideration here and I think that, you know, if before
the World cut we get games and locations that would
best performance outside in New Zealand, that should be the priori.
I think kiwis want to see us when.
Speaker 5 (01:05:11):
At this World Cup.
Speaker 3 (01:05:12):
Having said that, you know, we've really put a huge
effort over the last few years into bringing both teams home,
playing at home every single year, building a brand of
the teams and it's paying off. So we're working on
some factures that I think I've said, I'm pretty keen
to bring them home this year again. I think there's
a real growing bars in New Zealand around this team
(01:05:34):
and so yeah, very keen to bring home in at
least once this year and then next year. Performance in
the draw will will drive those but certainly if we could.
Speaker 5 (01:05:42):
We would bring them home again before it should be lovely.
Speaker 2 (01:05:44):
What about a home and away series against Australia.
Speaker 3 (01:05:48):
Yeah, I mean I think we've always pursued those. We've
had We've had quite a few of us in the
furn site. We managed to you know, and they found
their soccer rashes and someone's head. We managed to dig
both out and play them. We played the home and
away series and twenty twenty one, so certainly.
Speaker 2 (01:06:07):
Very very keen on that.
Speaker 3 (01:06:08):
We've obviously the relationship with Football Australia is very very strong.
It's probably strategically one of our most important relationships sitting
in different confederations. I know they've been so yeah, we
keep seeing that. Their challenge is that the Asian Football
Confederation World Cup qualifying process is so long. But they've
just had a great wind, you know, happy for them
(01:06:29):
two wins. It looks like they're high in their group,
so I think that makes it more likely. So you
will be in dialogue with them over coming weeks for sure.
Speaker 2 (01:06:38):
All right, look forward to that. How strong a feeling, Andrew,
do you get from the players and the coaching staff
that they want to play well at the World Cup,
win games at the World Cup, not just be there
to make up the numbers.
Speaker 3 (01:06:50):
Yeah, I mean, is they know what they're capable of.
They absolutely want to break new ground. Everyone remembers twenty ten,
well it was it was phenomenal time for the game,
and but look, this is the greatest group of talent
we've ever had right now, and they definitely. Can you
(01:07:11):
know they're on the verge of a breakout performance and
they're so young as well.
Speaker 5 (01:07:16):
I think the exciting thing is obviously our focus will
be squarely on twenty.
Speaker 3 (01:07:19):
Six, but this is a squad who could be pretty
much carry right through to twenty.
Speaker 5 (01:07:24):
Thirty as well.
Speaker 3 (01:07:26):
So not only you know twenty six is first and
foremost the focus, but this could be a group that
really carries on and take takes the game to new heights.
Speaker 2 (01:07:36):
How big a financial boost is World Cup qualification for
New Zealand football?
Speaker 3 (01:07:40):
It's really significant. Look, I think we've come a long way.
Those of your listeners who are followed the national body
over the decades will remember, as you know, it used
to be a time when there was very much to
burn bus type organization and pretty regular financial trouble. We've
moved from that. E said, if we if you know
(01:08:02):
I had a disastrous not on Monday and things had
gone wrong, we're still gonna be solent. We were gonna
there's gonna be real challenges, but we would have pushed on.
But this is this is a material boost. It allows
us to keep interesting down into our federations, more and
more money, more and.
Speaker 5 (01:08:17):
More resources into the community game.
Speaker 3 (01:08:19):
It allows us to keep keep running and maintaining our
nine international teams who are around the world constantly. Uh,
and it also has us have a closer look at
our domestic competitions too. So you know, the mad some
big format changes through COVID, but I think there's some
excitement to try and keep those growing, expanding from our
from our clubs to participate in them. So yeah, it's
(01:08:40):
it's really big. The game's growing and it needs more
resource to sustain its growth, so it comes. It's very timely,
let's put it that way.
Speaker 2 (01:08:48):
Well, I can understand why the heart rate was a
but on the on the high side at nil or
when Chris Wood went off Andrew.
Speaker 5 (01:08:54):
Yes, exactly, Yeah, yeah, no, there was.
Speaker 3 (01:08:57):
I think myself and the CFO we're looking at each
other aware of the consequences and you.
Speaker 5 (01:09:04):
Know, it's just it's great.
Speaker 3 (01:09:05):
I mean, obviously we would have been disastrous not to
have gone through, but the team is, the team has
played well and yeah, and some exciting fixtures coming up.
Speaker 2 (01:09:15):
Absolutely, just before you go, where are we with the
appointment of a new permanent football Ferns coach? Any progress there?
Speaker 3 (01:09:22):
It's gone to market the team of leaving this weekend.
Xc J only's tapai. Just keep them out for those games,
in particular the international match, a match that will be
played in broadcast, so we should have it's gone to market.
Be just closing and I believe we'll be interviewing for
over April May. We're looking to a point sometime around June.
Speaker 2 (01:09:45):
Good stuff, good update, Hey, Andrew bar I'm glad that
it all worked out on Monday night, not just for
you but for the football community here. The All Whites
can look forward to another trip to the World Cup.
Always good to chat mate. Thanks for taking the time.
Speaker 3 (01:09:56):
Appreciate that Bony, take care.
Speaker 2 (01:09:58):
You take care to Andrew thinks indeed Andrew pregnant, CEO
of New Zealand Football joining us on Weekends Sport after
the All Whites secured their ticket to the World Up
next year. Steve on Texas Jason, the All Whites getting
to the World Cup should be cherished, but it's not
as difficult as it was in previous years and will
become expected in future. Is when we only have to
beat the likes of Fiji, Vanowartou, etc. Yep, I've seen
(01:10:19):
this narrative quite a lot actually before the game's last
weekend and also in the time since. And I guess
my response to it is that it's not up to
the All Whites or New Zealand football to determine the
path to a World Cup. All they can do is
play what is in front of them. And the expanded
(01:10:43):
World Cup, absolutely, Steve, absolutely makes it much more straightforward
to get to a World Cup than has been the
case previously. We know twenty ten the intercontinental playoff with
bah Rain, what a what a moment to cherish for
New Zealand sports fans, but that was a bridge too
far four years later when we couldn't care get past Mexico.
(01:11:05):
Four years up that we couldn't get past Peru both
of those ties home and away, and then in a
one off game against Costa Rica last time due to
COVID restrictions, etc. We were beaten one knillonce ure. I
think we probably should have won that game, but that's
a different story. So it has been too difficult for
the last three iterations of the World Cup. The expanded
(01:11:26):
forty eight team tournament opens up an automatic spot for Oceania,
and you're right, Steve, I think we should expect new
Zealand to win that each time, given the far greater
level of player at our disposal compared to those in
the Pacific Islands. What they have now though is a
(01:11:49):
carrot of their own, because New Caledonia now have a
second crack at it. I thought they were very good
the other night, just quietly, I thought they were very good.
But even in defeat, they now go into a playoff
tournament early in twenty twenty six against other teams who
haven't qualified automatically from other confederations. I think all other
(01:12:11):
confederations apart from YUEFA. It's a sixteen tournament, two more
spots up for grab, so straight away New Caledonia have
gone further than they ever have before. So there is
that carrot there. And I've heard it also said, oh
we should join Asia as Australia did. Yes, that would
improve our football absolutely, it would would play much tougher
(01:12:32):
teams on a more regular basis. But there's absolutely no
incentive now for New Zealand to leve Oceannia, not in
terms of World Cups anyway, because the path is a
lot less challenging. Yes, we'd all like to see New
Zealand play the likes of Australia, Japan, South Korea. Asian
teams like that in World Cup qualifiers. But as I say,
(01:12:57):
the motivation just isn't there anymore because the World Cup
path is so much less and come, isn't it anyway?
It's a conversation for another day. I think nineteen away
from two one sixty four for three New Zealand and
the thirty second over Mark Chapman going along very nicely,
seventy three unbeaten off seventy five, Dalel Mitchell playing a
(01:13:19):
nice supporting role. He's unbeaten on thirty three coming towards
the end of the thirty second over New Zealand one
sixty four for three. So they've picked it up over
five runs but over and looking looking good for a
decent total. Batting first against Pakistan and Napien. We'll head
across the Tasman when we come back. A regular catch
up with our Australian correspondent Adam Peacock.
Speaker 1 (01:13:38):
Don't get caught off side Call eight hundred eighty ten
eighty Weekends for Us with Jason Pain and GJ. Gunnerhomes
New Zealand's most trusted home builder, News talksb.
Speaker 2 (01:13:49):
Weekend Sport bang on one forty five. Time to catch
up with our Australian correspondent, Adam Peacock. You're a Manly fan,
of course, Adam Daily Cherry Evans is leaving the Sea Eagles.
What's the background to all of this?
Speaker 10 (01:14:01):
Oh goodness, whiney, hello, taga weed. One of the weirdest
stories I think I've ever scene in any sport is
that Daily Cherry Evans went on television on Monday night
and said I don't know if I'm going to play
next year or retire, but what I do know is
I won't be at Manley. But he didn't say that
(01:14:22):
the real, an actual reason why he didn't want to
play at Manley, and everyone's just then jumped the conclusions.
Speaker 5 (01:14:28):
And the weird thing is with Daily, I.
Speaker 10 (01:14:29):
Don't think he computed it too well. He goes, I
just wanted to knock off the speculation about where I'd
be in twenty twenty six, so I'll come out and
say I'm not playing at Manly. Well that's just now kickstarted.
Where's he going to play? What was the bloout with Manly?
We get the Friday or today Saturday and there's still
no absolute clarity out of what exactly went down there
(01:14:49):
behind the four walls, all inside the four walls at Manly.
It's just a weird, old story. But apparently he's going
to play tomorrow and he'll probably rip it up against
Paramatta and play well Meling Gales.
Speaker 2 (01:15:01):
Where would he go? And okay, let's break this down
into parts. How strong a possibility that he retires at
the end of this year or is that really not
on the cards?
Speaker 10 (01:15:12):
I think hearing everything that Dailey has said this week
and all the commentary around it since, and hearing Tony Mestrov,
the Manley CEO speak, and a few others with maybe
a little bit of authority to speak about what's going on,
it's almost a case of it's a complete mystery what
he's going to do, whether or not he plays on
on it's just one fact he's there that it's not
(01:15:35):
going to be a Manly because it's quite obvious that
he's had he's had a disagreement or he feels disrespected,
but he doesn't feel disrespected enough to disrespect the club
in public. But is just it's flat out weird and
Manly probably could have handled the whole thing better. They
said that they went along with Daily's wishes and saying
they didn't want to talk about contracts last November December,
(01:15:56):
that they were reluctant to offer a two year deal anyway, whatever.
I think Rooster's bulldog of Dolphins for the three that
have emerged, is the three most likely if Daily to
go on, and I dare say that the Roosters would
be favored among those.
Speaker 2 (01:16:11):
Trayer how old Daily Cherry Evans?
Speaker 4 (01:16:13):
Is he what you be?
Speaker 2 (01:16:13):
Thirty six? Wouldn't he?
Speaker 10 (01:16:15):
Yeah, thirty six? He's stealing great Nick. He's the ultimate professional.
He's in such great nick. He hasn't had a major
injury like he doesn't have Oh jeez, he's got to
be worried about his knees or I mean, the only
thing that popped up really in recent times is that
back spasm he had against the Warriors a couple of
weeks ago, And I'm like, I've that backspasms and I
(01:16:36):
know that they're masking something more sinister, But hopefully it
was just a one off with Daily and there's no
disc problems or issues with his lowest spine, which can
happen at his age, especially with the impacts that he suffered.
But no, he's in for a thirty six year old.
Speaker 9 (01:16:52):
He's as good.
Speaker 10 (01:16:53):
As nick as possible because I just play the amount
of regular games as he has.
Speaker 2 (01:16:56):
All Right, we'll track this story with interest. As you say,
he'll probably help the Seagulls tear it up against the
Eels tomorrow. The round started with another loss to the
Penrith Panthers. That is three in a row for the
three time raining in URL premiers. Are they human after all?
The Panthers?
Speaker 5 (01:17:15):
Yeah?
Speaker 10 (01:17:15):
Yeah, that's the assumption that everyone's made. Now, I haven't Cleary.
He's such a good coach and he's starts a good
man manager. He went in and said, judges properly on that,
with the fact that we've been shipped away chips all
over our best players or two or three of them
leading up to each success, judges on that when we
actually play the way we know we can play, i e.
(01:17:38):
Control possession and control teams without the ball with their
kick chase and their defensive pressure. And it's just a
bit loose at the moment. Now, I mean, what is
a chicken egg is it?
Speaker 5 (01:17:49):
Is it loose?
Speaker 10 (01:17:50):
Because they have lost all these players and title cogs
and their energy and all of those things. Or is
it by virtually the fact that, yeah, they're taking a
few more games than usual for the will to start
turning for them because of all the effort that's gone
in in the last four years for the players that
are still there to try and do it all over again. Look,
even if they missed the finals at won't Sully, what
(01:18:12):
Ivan Claire is as a coach, what Nathan Cleaire is
a player, and what that club is is a development club.
It's just phenomenal what they've been able to do that. Eventually,
surely it has to it has to tell, and maybe
we're just seeing the initial scientier that the penrith are
off the ball and it's open for anyone else to
take advantage this year.
Speaker 2 (01:18:30):
Yeah, well, anyone who wants to chase the storm betters
I think everybody pretty much.
Speaker 10 (01:18:35):
Yeah, we were discussing with mate last night. It's storm
and who We asked the question like four or five
different answers. So yes, it's a fascinating company in that regard.
And if the storm go off a little bit, it
is completely wide open.
Speaker 2 (01:18:48):
All right. Well, let's finish with football and the soccer US.
Two good results in the latest World Cup qualifying window
of five to one went over Indonesia at home and
then a good two nil won away against China. So
in terms of automatic qualification out of Asia, you have
to finish in the top two in your group and
have already secured top spot. Australia have to play Japan
(01:19:10):
and then Saudi Arabia. That Saudi Arabia game away. That
feels like a virtual one off automatic qualification game, doesn't it,
Saudi Arabia Australia in June, Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:19:21):
It does. It does.
Speaker 10 (01:19:23):
However, if we beat Japan, take care of business again
them and weirdly enough, Japan look make qualifying look easy,
and they got all this fabulous players playing in Europe.
Speaker 5 (01:19:34):
But every time we play them, it.
Speaker 10 (01:19:35):
Becomes a lot closer than what the squad know, the
squad depth would suggest or form before, it would suggest
that it's just a weird thing. Hopefully they ain't come
out and tonk to Thornell. But yeah, if we get
that result right, then it's very much in our own hands.
In Saudi Arabia need a miracle. So yeah, we put
(01:19:56):
ourselves in a position to look after things our own way.
Given those two great results. In the first half against
China was probably one of the better halves of football
of the entire qualification campaign in front of eighty thousand
screaming Chinese fans just to quieten them with a damn
good performances. They helped by the goalkeeper on the second goal,
we had a shocker. But yeah, really impressive results. But
(01:20:20):
Pavovic hopefully gets a bit more time with this place
for these next two games, not like two days, maybe
four days, and yeah, better performance like the performance against
in these right, but we're still on tight one weirdly.
But yeah, the important thing is it's in our own
hands and for once we don't need things to go
our way.
Speaker 2 (01:20:38):
And you know, I think I read that Tony Popovich
has had the best start in terms of unbeaten matches
as soccer as coach since Terry Vinnables in nineteen ninety seven.
So yeah, pretty good stuff that ended up true. Not try,
I didn't mean to bring up old old roans, that's true.
Speaker 10 (01:20:58):
Yeah, I'll guarantee you, Piney, if you bring up that
with any soccer as saying who knows their history, that's
exactly the answer you're going to get.
Speaker 2 (01:21:05):
So yeah, did you did you catch the fact that
the All Whites, though with a slightly easier path you know,
have have qualified for the World Cup next year.
Speaker 9 (01:21:16):
No, happy for them.
Speaker 10 (01:21:18):
They got us done against the places you want to
visit on holiday, so really happy for them. Care of
business with all due respect in New Caledonia football. That've
obviously proven New Caledonians and also PJ and all that.
But yeah, the Kiwis, I'm sure you all started celebrating
when you found out what the qualification criteria was and
(01:21:38):
you took advantage of it. Well done and obviously that
with all the PHAs you plan in Europe, it's going
in the right direction.
Speaker 2 (01:21:43):
Over so it's fantastic. They always good to chant and
I'm enjoy your day and we will catch up again
same time next Saturday.
Speaker 10 (01:21:50):
Sounds good.
Speaker 2 (01:21:51):
Have a go on, You have a go on to mate.
Adam Peacock are Australian correspondent here on News Talks. He'd
be seven to.
Speaker 1 (01:21:57):
The school from the track field and the court on
your home of sport weekends for it with Jason Vine
News Talks.
Speaker 2 (01:22:04):
In b just on four to Two's that sound Oh
it's the hurricane storming back into the top six. Super
Rugby pleasing night down at Sky Stadium for Hurricanes fans
last night and no doubt they're coaching team as well.
Brent Evans, assistant coach of the team, is going to
join us after two o'clock and we'll get the final
(01:22:24):
result in the trade me auction for Sam Ruth's shoes,
his record breaking shoes. Dad being going to join us
with the final result before three o'clock as well.
Speaker 1 (01:22:36):
The only place to discuss the biggest fourse issues on
and after fields. It's all on We Joe Ford with
Jason Vaine on your home of sport US.
Speaker 2 (01:22:49):
Hello. Then it's coming up seven past two. This is
Weekend Sport on News Talks edb As. We have another
hour and then hand over to Tim Beveridge for the
Saturday edition of the Weekend Collective. Now this hour we're
going to check in with the hottest auction item statistically
(01:23:09):
this year on trade meet Sam Ruth's shoes or I
said there's been another bid. In fact, there's been a
bit of a bidding war in the last ten minutes.
How much sh recking these shoes are going for? Have
a guess, well the current bid. These are the shoes
that Sam Ruth was wearing when he went under four
minutes for the mile and became the youngest ever to
(01:23:33):
do so. Ten eight hundred and fifty dollars is the
current bid eight hundred and fifty and it closes at
two forty. The reason it's closing at two forty is
that Sam's dad, Ben has very kindly agreed to close
the auction. During our show, he said, look, I'd love
to join your live and let you know the result.
We said, Ben, we'd love to have you. Now. Sam's
(01:23:56):
running in an event tonight over in Australia. Now. It's
called the Maury Plant Meat. It's in Melbourne and I've
just been a to the fact that it has officially
sold out, the first one day athletics meet in Australia
to sell out since the two thousand and one IBAF
(01:24:18):
Grand Prix. That's tremendous. I don't know what a sellout
is in terms of how many people can can get in.
There we go, capacity crowd of ten thousand, There we go.
Ten thousand people are going to front up to watch
this and Sam Ruth is running in a very high
quality fifteen hundred meter field tonight. Sam Tanner is also
(01:24:42):
there and of the athletes who are taking part there
are fourteen of them. We know how quick Sam Ruth is.
Sam Ruth by time is the second slowest in this field.
That's how high quality. The field is made up mainly
of Australians, with just Sam Tanner and Sam Ruth flying
the New Zealand flag. The other twelve are all Australians.
(01:25:04):
Know there's one Japanese runner in the as well, but
sold out. It's just utterly terrific track and field going
through a bit of a renaissance on both sides of
the Tasman by the sounds of it. Not that it
ever went away, but you know what I mean anyway,
Ben Ruth before to three with the final tally of
Sam's shoes on trade me. If you've got to spare
(01:25:25):
eleven grand check a bit on just look for Sam
Ruth's shoes on trade me and away you'll go. Are
the Hurricanes with a I think it can be called
a statement performance last night beating the Warritars. They've been
a bit up and down, haven't they, the Hurricanes in
the first five or six rounds of Super Rugby, but
back to back wins for the first time this season
(01:25:46):
into the top six for the meantime with a fifty
seven twelve demolition job of the Warritars. We'll talk to
their assistant coach Bryn Evans shortly. Also this how I
want to take some calls on super Rague. Be a
couple of things to ask you about. Ben Ruth, of course,
will keep eyes on the cricket. Now, just on the cricket.
New Zealand two hundred and two for three, two hundred
(01:26:09):
and two for three batting first against Pakistan and Napier
now they worth fifty for three. So by my maths,
Mark Chapman and Daryl Mitchell have added one hundred and
fifty two for the third wicket unbroken. And I wondered,
and you might be wondering too, what the highest third
wicket partnership is for New Zealand against Pakistan and One
Day Internationals. I can tell you it was Daryl Mitchell
(01:26:30):
with Tom Latham. They put on one hundred and eighty
three for the third wicket and a game in raoul
Pindi in April of twenty twenty three. So Daryl Mitchell's
got the opportunity to break that record. Although New Zealand
are undergoing a review at the moment. We'll bring you
the upshot of that. But going along pretty nicely New
(01:26:51):
Zealand against Pakistan having been sent in two hundred and
one for three coming towards the end of the Sorry
two two for three coming towards the end of the
thirty eighth over your causing correspondence, Always welcome on the show.
Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty If you want
to make a phone call two nine two for text
messages emails to Jason at Newstalk SEDB dot co dot nz.
But as we always do at around about this time
(01:27:14):
eleven past two, let's get you up today. There's the
music that indicates the arrival of in case you missed it,
the feature where we catch you up on the things
you may well have missed. To the Hong Kong Sevens
first up shutouts for the all black sevens.
Speaker 12 (01:27:31):
New Zealand in tailer control of this one thirty seconds
to play in the second half, fresh off the Vans,
Breddy Rush could't quite believe his luck as he's dropped
at that ball.
Speaker 2 (01:27:39):
And there were no blue jerseys in front of him.
Speaker 5 (01:27:41):
Brady Rush for New Zealand that'll.
Speaker 2 (01:27:43):
Do it in New Zealand winning this one twenty nine
points to now over and for the blackfood and sevens
as well. New Zealans defense fans out told you you that,
Oh Miller, watch your wallet. Christie stolen another one away
It comes to Chelsey Timiss and he just the thin
to finish it off. Chelsea Timisi with the final say
forty five nil over China. So both our teams undefeed
(01:28:06):
it on day one in Hong Kong. They play their
third and final pall match of it later on today
to the A League, MacArthur finding a somewhat unlikely hero
as they struck Lake to salvage a drawer against Newcastle.
Yachi Less puts it in, So it's a male, it's
(01:28:26):
a saber and Hanvy Sion scored his first day then
go it's.
Speaker 3 (01:28:33):
A Tuble threeble green in ninety five.
Speaker 2 (01:28:37):
Minutes here three all last night Harry Sawyer scoring his
first two goals of his day league career for MacArthur
to salvage them a point to the NRL and oppressive
win for the Titans over the Roosters only two away
last play though.
Speaker 12 (01:28:54):
And now.
Speaker 2 (01:28:56):
Suma how we freshman on the field. The roosters went missing,
and it's the Titans night tonight and the Broncos winning
the Bat of Brisbane thumping the Dolphins. Last points were
in the thirtieth git in to try to stags. Here
it comes down and got numbers. He's Sevasaki for number two.
(01:29:17):
It just opened up for given Simasaki. Oh, he's having
a knight tonight to Super Rugby. The Bromby's delivering more
misery to the Highlanders and Nick frost I work rate.
We always difficult to condate and they just keep working
it away. Here and they go to the left. It's
a shot past to Echtow and he's found some spakes
(01:29:37):
and he's got a score. Well that's it. Shut the gate. Yeah,
the Brumbi is beating the Highlanders in Canberra last night.
And finally an insane finish to the Lakers balls game
in the NBA. With twelve seconds to go, the balls
were down by five. They hit a three, stole the inbounds,
(01:29:58):
hit another three, and then this happened in the last
six seconds. Here's Reeves straight to the top. There's a
lot of turnouts. Two seconds tell you.
Speaker 5 (01:30:12):
For the weird.
Speaker 13 (01:30:18):
Belisabeth unbelievable if possible.
Speaker 1 (01:30:29):
Good day, mate, when it's down to the line. You
made a call on eight ten eighty Weekend Sports with
Jason Pine News Talks.
Speaker 2 (01:30:38):
EMP Today's I got a mate hit the end of
that endy? Is that is that what that was in
that commentary?
Speaker 12 (01:30:46):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:30:46):
Is that? Is that racially insensitive or anything? Okay? Good
that feels it? Because Giddy is obviously Australian? Is he
is this what we're talking here, That's.
Speaker 3 (01:30:54):
What we're talking Josh Gaddy, the Australian and naturally what
you say when an Australian's done well and delirious excitement,
you say screams good a mate?
Speaker 2 (01:31:03):
Can I made food in come? Three point of that one?
Injury news, et cetera. I don't know what accent I
was even putting on there anyway. Yeah, good to see
Josh Giddy hit hit that three roll on the buzzer
to give the Balls the one one nine, one one
seven win over the LA Lakers in an absolute thriller
in the NBA quarter pass to a statement from the
(01:31:25):
Hurricanes last night, it just bounces off ahead of a
flyer and a touch.
Speaker 10 (01:31:29):
They go.
Speaker 2 (01:31:32):
Ragged old end to this one full time in Wellington
statement performance from the Hurricanes nine tries to two. They've
won it by fifty seven points to twelve. Yeah, betting
the warrit has fifty seven twelve to move into Super
Rugby's top six for the first time this season. Hurricanes
assistant coach Bryn Evans is with us Brian. First of all,
(01:31:53):
in general terms, how big a result was this in
terms of the Hurricane season.
Speaker 12 (01:31:59):
Yeah, I mean it's it's it's obviously good to see
the boys, you know, get out there and through the
ball around a bit, I suppose, and just see the
smiles on the faces on a few of the Moose
coming off.
Speaker 2 (01:32:13):
After a slightly inconsistent start to twenty twenty five, did
it feel like a performance like this was coming.
Speaker 12 (01:32:21):
Yeah, I think, you know, especially the week before the
buy really grinding out a win against the Hondas brought
some good cohesion amongst the group and boys went away,
recharged over the BIEWK and came back really keen to
crack on and you know, put the X to the
(01:32:44):
grind and work on a few things that maybe we've
been lacking on this out of season.
Speaker 2 (01:32:48):
What sort of things have been that we were the
main focus heading into last night. What were some of
the things that you were you were quite keen to
see even small improvements in.
Speaker 12 (01:32:58):
Yeah, I think especially when we looked at our defense,
it was getting off the line, you know, not waiting
for the the opposition to come to us more us
go to them and dictate on our terms, put pressure
on their ballplayers, and just being switched on on both
(01:33:19):
sides of the ball so we could be up as
that one line.
Speaker 2 (01:33:23):
I haven't seen the stats, but just on the defense,
you must have been happy because well from my memory
of watching the game last night, the Hurricanes's defense was excellent.
I can't remember too many mistackles, too many line breaks
from the wartas. Were you happy with the defensive performance?
Speaker 12 (01:33:38):
Yeah, I think obviously they're a good side and rolling.
Speaker 5 (01:33:41):
Off the back of what they had.
Speaker 12 (01:33:42):
Done last week, they came out and started really strong,
and so that's you know, flick the boys into gear
pretty quickly, and I think bar that first you know,
five ten minutes where they got a few points, I
think the boys really showed what they can do when
they do do the things that they they've been working
on during the week.
Speaker 5 (01:34:02):
So that was really pleasing to see, so thirty.
Speaker 2 (01:34:05):
Five minutes gone, only ten seven ahead, did it feel
like it was going to be a bit of an
armor whistle, a bit like the Highlanders game. At that point,
it felt like.
Speaker 5 (01:34:16):
We were creating a lot of opportunities.
Speaker 12 (01:34:19):
It felt like we were playing within ourselves, I think
for the most part, and I think we were playing
in the right ears.
Speaker 5 (01:34:26):
Of the field.
Speaker 12 (01:34:28):
It was just you know, that last pass or a
little bit of a miscommunication or you know, something that
didn't quite go away, and then that year that lasts
two or three minutes before halftime. You know, we managed
to put a lot of good phases stacking on top
of each other, and I think a supper scored a
try and then you know from a kick that bounced
(01:34:52):
from the kickoff, you know, the boys just bouncing on
loose Bourne and then from there, you know, that's where
the boys really come alive and play with the Hurricanes rugby.
And that was great to see a few passes sticking
and going the link like that.
Speaker 2 (01:35:04):
Surely got to give a rap to Isaiah Walker Leowerdi
for his run and later in the first half to
set up came royguards try.
Speaker 5 (01:35:11):
Yeah, one hundred percent, and I think.
Speaker 12 (01:35:15):
Isaiah, you know, potentially hit one of his better games
at one of his best games in a Hurricane Jersey
last night. He was everywhere, you know, he was, he
was playing right on the line and just he was
in everything. So it was it was really awesome to see.
You know, he's he's had a few issues with his
discipline over the start of the season, and I think
(01:35:36):
he's he's really gone away and he's worked really hard
on those things what he can and can't do, and
I think we saw really a great version of him
last night.
Speaker 2 (01:35:45):
Yeah, and they couldn't agree more. They scored a trioly
in the second but then thirty three unanswered points from
the Hurricanes. You must have enjoyed the last half hour
or so of that game.
Speaker 8 (01:35:56):
Yeah, Yeah, it was.
Speaker 12 (01:35:58):
It was great, great to see, great to say, if
you guys come off the bench and take their opportunities.
You know, it's I think, you know, from the start
of the season that we have had we've had the
opportunity for some guys that don't generally play a lot
of rugby or you know, consistent rugby, that to actually
get some real, some real valuable minutes under their belts.
Speaker 5 (01:36:20):
In terms of Super rugby.
Speaker 12 (01:36:22):
So in terms of a squad, we're really building some
experience here, which is great, and those guys are actually
now starting to kind of figure out how to go
about their business, and I think it's.
Speaker 5 (01:36:34):
Just going to make the team stronger going forward.
Speaker 2 (01:36:36):
Set piece one of your one of your key responsibilities.
Nine out of ten of your own lineouts one you
won four of theirs. You'd be pretty happy with those numbers.
Speaker 5 (01:36:46):
Yeah, yeah, you know, we.
Speaker 12 (01:36:49):
We pride ourselves in our set piece. You know, we're
kind of we're on the wrong side of maybe a
real and not straight which was which is tough. But
you know, boys trained hard over the weekend. I think,
you know, in terms of trying to stop a team
at the Warrior ties, you have to attack them at source,
and they've got some great ball runners and they've got
(01:37:11):
some strong forward so we we we really plan to
go after him at.
Speaker 5 (01:37:16):
Set peace off.
Speaker 12 (01:37:16):
We could disrupt them in the first phase like that,
then that was going to make our jobs a lot easier.
So it was pleasing to see the boys get set
first and really sort of attack what was in front
of them.
Speaker 2 (01:37:30):
Now, does Reuben Love practice throwing thirty meter behind the
back flick passes.
Speaker 12 (01:37:37):
Well, room and love practices a lot of things, and
he practiced him very well. I haven't seen him do that.
One might do one of those sessions that I might
have ducked into to review training, so potentially, but you know,
he's the sort of guy that can can pull those
things off. And it looks like it comes as easy
(01:37:58):
as it did to him last night. So you know,
he's a talented player and it's it's great to have
him back planning some Hurricanes rugby.
Speaker 2 (01:38:05):
Yeah, pretty special stuff to set that that try up
at the end and another really solid performance from Duplessis.
You've been in and around him for a little while now, Brinnan,
are you seeing some some growth as we all are
in the way he plays the game?
Speaker 12 (01:38:21):
Yeah, one hundred percent. You know, he's he's coming to
He's he's a big he's a big part of the team.
You know, he's he's a he's a leader. He's been
given that that leadership, one of those leadership responsibilities this year,
and I think that's something he's been craving and he's
(01:38:41):
he's just taken everything in his stride. You know, here
the boys will will listen to him and I'll follow him,
and I think that's that's the best things to kind
of go. You'll get them behind and he'll lead the way.
So it's it's coming through on what he does on
the field obviously, and and and off the field as well.
And I think he's he's taken that opportunity and I
(01:39:02):
think you know he's he's a sort of guy that's
gonna that's going to do everything you can for this team,
and that's what you want of one of your leaders.
Speaker 2 (01:39:11):
Absolutely, And just to finish the Blues up next a
week tonight up at Eden Park. They're a bit of
a wounded beast at the moment. They've got to buy
this weekend to get their own refreshment in. How are
you going to prepare for the challenge of the Blues
at Eaton Park next week?
Speaker 5 (01:39:25):
Yeah, I think you know, the boys would have would
have been happy with.
Speaker 12 (01:39:29):
With the result last night, but then you know, as
soon as that that was done, there'll be one eye
on the week ahead.
Speaker 5 (01:39:38):
And you know there's a we narrow now.
Speaker 12 (01:39:42):
We lost at home to them, you know, a few
weeks back, so that'll be not too not too far
in the distant memory of the boys and I think
it should be.
Speaker 5 (01:39:52):
A really good game.
Speaker 12 (01:39:53):
You know, we're we're going to be preparing really well.
But as you say, there'll be there'll be an air
of desperation about the Blues and I think it's it's
going to be one of the it's going to be
a real scrap.
Speaker 5 (01:40:07):
So you will be looking forward to that.
Speaker 2 (01:40:09):
Yeah, so are we excellent stuff? Bring congratulations on the
win last night. Thanks for the chat. Today, go and
enjoy what looks to be a pretty nice Wellington.
Speaker 5 (01:40:15):
Day, okayn't beat it mate? Thanks funny No, thank you.
Speaker 2 (01:40:18):
Brent Brentevans, their assistant coach of the Hurricanes after their
good win yesterday fifty seven points to twelve, so that
does take them up to sixth on the table on
points differential. Basically they had the same number of points
as the Force, but a better points diff So after
six games Hurricanes on fourteen points. Chiefs are top. They've
(01:40:41):
got the weekend off, the Crusaders can go top. Later
on tonight, Goldsport and iHeartRadio will have coverage of the
Crusaders against Mowana PACIFICA. I sure want to take your
cause on that, especially Crusaders fans. Are you back we
spoke a little bit about this last week off the
back of your win over the Blues. Extremely impressive by
(01:41:02):
the way, or are you just going to wait and see?
Because it more and more the more I watched the
Crusaders this year, more and more it feels like an
outlier twenty twenty four, an utter outlier, and maybe it
just took a bit of time for Rob Penny. And
this actually leads into a conversation I want to have
tomorrow around the whole Lie and Lawson thing, which we're
going to do after mid day tomorrow, just just so
(01:41:25):
you know, if you want to tune after mid day tomorrow,
we'll have a good long chin wag about Liam Lawson
and what's happened there. And I'm keen to hear your views.
But you know, they could have easily got rid of
Rob Penny last year, couldn't they. And it just feels
as though they stuck with them and now they're starting
to bear the fruit of that. It's rare, actually an
elite sport, this instant gratification mindset. It's started to really
(01:41:48):
great on me. I have to say, just getting rid
of somebody when things don't go well immediately two races
for Liam Lawson gone out of Red Bull anyway, we
can talk about that tomorrow. So Crusaders more on a pacificut,
any nerves, Crusaders fans or or not more on a pacificut.
We know they can score points, in fact, they're one
(01:42:10):
of the highest point scorers in the entire Super Rap competition,
but they leak a lot of points. And when the
Crusaders can call upon outside backs like they can, I
don't even think Seva Reese's playing tonight. Now he's not.
He's He's dropped out. Jordan's springer and Fee Harckey. Goodness me,
(01:42:30):
Jordan's spring of Fee Harckey. What a back three, Harvillian
McLeod and midfield setting them up. James O'Connor at first
five tonight. Interesting, Noah Hotham back at half back. So
the back line is Hotham, O'Connor, Harvillly McLoud and midfield
spring of Ve Hackey, Jordan Purpus. But then you look
(01:42:51):
at the more oner PACIFICA side, and they have had
their moments, haven't they. They've had their moments, and they
too have some fairly potent outside backs and some playmakers
as well. Ardie Savier back. That's key, absolutely crucial, isn't
it for them? Oh, eight hundred and eighty ten eighty.
If you would like to talk about a super rugby,
(01:43:12):
this meantime from a short time ago in Napier.
Speaker 14 (01:43:15):
As irv un this could be yet it is. It's
one hundred runs for Mark Chapman. It was a short
ball from Irvan Cahan and Chapman who had a few
swings at it, powers it down the ground for four
runs and a well earned hundred Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:43:37):
Courtesy of our friends at the Alternative Commentary Collective, where
you can hear live commentary of all these black app matches.
Mark Chamman bringing up his one hundred he's now one
hundred and six, not out of one hundred balls, Darrel Mitchell,
they're on seventy six and this partnership is now worth
one hundred and ninety eight runs, so it is a
new record New Zealand two hundred and forty eight for three.
(01:43:59):
Coming towards the end of the forty second over talking
some super rugby. If you would like to a new
revol you'll just need to turn that radio down in
the background, being because we sort of operate on a
delay system just in case you happen to come on
and swear we need to get rid of you. You know, well, being,
I'm really going to need you to turn down your
(01:44:19):
turn down your radio in the in the background there
have you? Have you managed to do that? I think
you have? Hello?
Speaker 14 (01:44:29):
You mean I.
Speaker 9 (01:44:32):
Put you on speakers, so can he Yeah, I can.
Speaker 2 (01:44:35):
Hear you find being. What's on your mind? Mate? What's
on your mind?
Speaker 5 (01:44:38):
Mate?
Speaker 9 (01:44:38):
I just I just loved how these guys sort of
we're getting the banter of being a guaranteed points scorer
at the start of the when they first entered the competition.
I just I'm also worrious then, and I know how
it would have been for these guys more in pacifica
in the drewer yep, and and and now look now, look,
(01:45:03):
you know you've got you've got competition, have you. One's
going to say tonight, oh the Crusaders. I mean, I'm
a Crusaders man. I'll go to Fiji a lot put
on the old Crusaders Jersey get a lot of respect
after being over there, and know in their culture, I
get behind the drew now and I watch them because
and I love watching them because it is so exciting
(01:45:25):
to watch the mine of Psfoka is obviously change the
step with Addie Savier on board, and it's just awesome
to see. Me, it's just awesome to see and I
can't wait for the nights game.
Speaker 5 (01:45:43):
Yeah but.
Speaker 9 (01:45:45):
One day, one day the Worries might take out the
Premiership and one day, one day that one day the
Duror might just when when Super Rugby, what do you say,
you know.
Speaker 3 (01:45:54):
Why not?
Speaker 6 (01:45:55):
Why not?
Speaker 15 (01:45:59):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:45:59):
No, but I totally agree, and look, I would love
to see it. And if the Fiji and Drawer can
somehow replicate what they do at home on the road,
I mean you'll know that it's you know, they're a
different proposition, you know in Fiji. But if they can replicate,
even if they can start to pick up wins more
regularly away, I think the Fiji and Drawer are absolutely
a playoff proposition for starters and.
Speaker 9 (01:46:21):
There who knows there are forced to be rickon with
then and and and so is my own partificate.
Speaker 10 (01:46:27):
Look at it.
Speaker 9 (01:46:27):
Look at how those fellows turned out this year. When
you see Ardie not on a field, it's a funny one.
You say, you can't bank on one player to be
there for the team. You know, we did it with
Sean Johnson, but you see when Artie's there, and you
just know that if you if you had Ardio and
your team, you do things that you didn't think you
could be able to do, you know, And so it's
(01:46:49):
just it's awesome. I can't wait for a nice game.
Speaker 2 (01:46:52):
Good on you, benh great to chat to him, mate,
call back anytime, Always good chatting rugby video. I feel
the same way about Artie Savia. I feel I feel
like if I was a rugby player and Ardie Savia
was leading me out, you know, and I saw that
big number eight on his back leading us all out
onto that field, I would just do whatever I possibly
could to not disappoint him, because you know he's going
(01:47:15):
to throw his body into it. And funnily enough, the
win that they had over the Hurricanes came when Ardie
Saville went off at halftime, so that could have been
a huge blow from Winer PACIFICA. But the way they
lifted their game in the second half that day, I
think miracle for LINGI got a hat trick. It shows
that they are more than just a one man team.
But he is integral to them in terms of their points.
(01:47:38):
Scoring more on a Pacifica. It got their scores. They
lost forty five forty four to the Force, they lost
fifty six thirty six to the Reds, they lost thirty
one twenty nine to the Highlanders. They beat the Hurricanes
forty thirty one and even when they had fifty pot
on them last week by the Chiefs, they scored thirty
(01:48:00):
five points. So in their five games, scoring points has
not been an issue. Been leaking them. At the other end,
they're truly the entertainers and even though they are bottom,
it's been just said, you know, they've got a bit
more about them. I'm not saying they'll beat the Crusaders.
Look from Walingtonian's point of view, I hope they do.
I think we all outside of christ here choke that
(01:48:21):
Mauana Pacifica beat the Crusaders tonight. I just can't see it.
The form that the Crusaders are in the way they
played last week against the Blues, and just the roster
that they have at their disposal, I can't see it.
But funny things happen. Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eight.
If you want to jump aboard nine two ninety two
on text. We've had a wicket in Napier. Spent a
long time coming for Pakistan, but they've finally picked up
(01:48:45):
the wicket of Daryl Mitchell, who has been dismissed for
seventy six. So I'll do the sums on the partnership
if I can. One hundred and ninety nine run partnership.
Chapman and Mitchell came together at fifty for three. Mitchell
out at two forty nine for four one hundred and
ninety nine, added a new fourth wicket record in One
(01:49:08):
Day internationals between New Zealand and Pakistan. The second of
our debutants is out there for New Zealand, Muhammadabas out
of Wellington, Nick Kelly the other one. He was out
for fifteen earlier on. Chapman continues to go on as
mary Way one hundred and seven not out of one
hundred and two. His highest one day score incidentallyst one
twenty four. So with still the best part of eight
overs to go, you think it'd give that a crack
(01:49:29):
if he hangs around for a bit longer. We're back
in a second on news talks. He bit if you've
got some thoughts on super rugby, let's hear them oh
eight hundred eighty ten eighty nine two nine to two one.
Speaker 1 (01:49:37):
Text the Voice of Sport on your Home of Sport
Weekend Sport with Jason Yne and GJ. Gunnos, New Zealand's
most trusted home builder News Talks Evy twenty four.
Speaker 2 (01:49:49):
Away from three. Very shortly, we're going to check in
when the auction for Sam Ruth's shoes closes. It closes
at two forty. It's currently approaching two thirty seven, so
three minutes. Often there's a flurry of late bidding. At
the moment the bid for Sam Ruth's record breaking shoes
(01:50:12):
eight hundred and fifty dollars eight hundred and fifty. That
bid was placed at four minutes past two, so it's
been there for just over half an hour. Will there
be a late flurry as others try to get there
right at the end, Well, we'll find out from Benruth
shortly what it actually ends up going for. Mark Chapman
has got his highest score in One Day International cricket.
(01:50:35):
He's gone to one hundred and twenty six of one
hundred and eight balls. He's decided that he's just going
to go for it now two six four in the
last over, and New Zealand now going along very very nicely. Indeed,
thank you very much. Pakistan who sent them into bat
would have been buoyant at fifty for three. Not so much.
Speaker 5 (01:50:55):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:50:56):
I'll just give you the latest score two hundred and
seventy three for four two seventy three for four to
seventy four for four in the At the end of
the forty third overs are still seven overs to go.
Chapmane hundred and twenty six not out and Mahmadabus there
on four man seven overs. They go at ten's they
could get up to close to three point fifty if
(01:51:18):
Mark Chapman stays there and he doesn't look in any
mood to slow down. If anything, it's the opposite anyway,
We'll keep eyes on that for you. Quick word from
the Wellington Phoenix camp. They take on Western Sydney this
afternoon five o'clock kick off at Sky Stadium. Josh Olloway Emmy,
their English goalkeeper, is back into the side, largely because
young KeyWe Lbie Kelly Healed has suffered a shoulder injury
(01:51:41):
which will end his season. Spoke briefly to Josh Olloway
me during the week asked how tough it's been for
him being out of the starting side as a goalkeeper.
Speaker 9 (01:51:49):
Yeah, it was.
Speaker 15 (01:51:50):
Of course it was tough. Anyone who says that it
was a walk in the park is probably lying. You know,
So it was tough, but it was a refining period,
a period where I can step back and see things,
and that's where I took it.
Speaker 2 (01:52:04):
What sort of things did you step back and see?
Speaker 15 (01:52:08):
No, just like team dynamics, when you're able to see
it from outside the pitch, you know what players like
and are good at, and like just the nature of
football as well. It's a different thing watching it from
the sidelines, you know. And you know, some people can
take it as the end of the world, or you
can take it as a refining time to pick up
(01:52:28):
things you wouldn't be able to see in the ficker
of the action, you know.
Speaker 2 (01:52:32):
Just guse. It's the tragedy of Church and being a goalkeeper,
but an outfield player, they might not have been a
starting eleven, but they might get a crack off the bench,
unlikely for a goalkeeper at least there's an injury obviously,
So how did you keep yourself motivated? We can week
out and help to encourage Elbie when he was between
the sticks.
Speaker 15 (01:52:46):
Yeah, well I'll be when I was playing, was very,
very encouraging and very he was very supportive. So even
regardless of that, with how I aim to be, that
is something that regardless of what position I'm in, the
personality old show would be to encourage you, whether's as
(01:53:07):
a person and as a teammate as well.
Speaker 2 (01:53:09):
And how do you stay sharp? Because you can be
an against sudden you're saying made a number of good saves,
but you hadn't been playing, So how do you stay
match sharp as a goalkeepers?
Speaker 5 (01:53:19):
It's more so in your head really.
Speaker 15 (01:53:21):
Physically they were it was still a bit of a
struggle with that game physically, but mentally you just have
to stay extra concentrated, focused on the little things as well,
and just it's how you approach the game really.
Speaker 2 (01:53:35):
And you probably would never have watched New Zealand play
football before you came here. But did you have an
eye on your your Phoenix team match and the All
Whites over the last week or so?
Speaker 15 (01:53:43):
Yeah, I went to the game and it was fun
to watch it from watch it from the crowd. A
lot of a lot of my teammates were doing absolutely tremendous,
you know.
Speaker 5 (01:53:54):
So yeah, it was good and wished.
Speaker 2 (01:53:57):
Certainly the highest scoring team in the A League, so
expecting a busy time on Saturday.
Speaker 5 (01:54:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 15 (01:54:03):
I'm trying to approach every game with the same mentality,
whether it's a team that doesn't have that record or not.
On the day it can be completely different or it
could be the same. So our whole team's going to
bring our a game and I'm sure they will bring
their a game, so yeah, it'll be a good, good match.
Speaker 2 (01:54:23):
That's the voice of Josh Olaway. Emmy restored to the
Wellington Phoenix starting side. He was there last time against Sydney.
I've seen a confidence building one old draw Western Sydney,
the competition's highest goal scoring team. His opposition and that
of the Wellington Phoenix later on this afternoon five o'clock
kick off. Mark Chapman, I've completely jinxed him. He's out,
but not before he smashed one hundred and thirty two
(01:54:46):
of one hundred and eleven balls, thirteen fours and six
sixers for Mark Chapman, his highest One Day international score.
He's departed for one thirty two. Muhammed Abbas is out there,
joined by his captain and Wellington teammate Michael Bracewell two
hundred and eighty for five midway through the forty fourth over,
so still score on the cards. If Michael brace Walll
(01:55:08):
can get going, we know what a potent striker of
the ball he can be. Let's take a break. When
we come back, we'll find out how much Sam Ruth's
shoes have gone for on trade meet back after this
on Weekend Sport.
Speaker 1 (01:55:21):
The big issues on and after Fields Call Oh eight
hundred and eighty ten eighty Weekends Forward with Jason.
Speaker 2 (01:55:28):
Pain and GJ.
Speaker 1 (01:55:29):
Gunnerhomes New Zealand's US Trusted Homilder News Talks a Baby.
Speaker 2 (01:55:33):
Two forty five. You might remember a week ago on
the show we spoke to Ben Ruth, dad of Sam Ruth,
who had just become the youngest ever person to run
a subformant mile, and Ben at that time told us
about the trade me auction that they were getting under
way a week or so ago, with Sam's historic sub
formanut mile shoes going up for auction and bidding, it
(01:55:57):
would be fair to say has got to a very
impressive level. Now, if you know trade me auctions, you'll
know that if there's a bid made within two minutes
of the closing time, then it auto extends by a
couple of minutes. Well, I think it's within thirty seconds anyway,
it can auto extend. But I believe that bidding has
finally closed after a bit of a flurry of late activity.
(01:56:19):
Two forty was the time that it was scheduled to close.
It's now approaching two forty six. Ben Ruth is with us.
Have we got a final number? Ben?
Speaker 8 (01:56:28):
We do?
Speaker 14 (01:56:29):
We do.
Speaker 16 (01:56:29):
We've got eleven four hundred and eight dollars, which is
just unbelievable. It's it just means so much, and what
an exciting flurry at the end there, And thanks everybody
so much for your support, and I think Dragon won it,
and Dads and Shares pushed Dragon after forty to the limit.
So just absolutely, it's just so grateful for one hundred
(01:56:50):
and fifty people that burden, all the comments and all
the support, fifty thousand watches and yeah, the top listing
on trade me. It's just it's just mind boggling, just
so grateful for.
Speaker 2 (01:56:59):
That absolutely brilliant. Yeah, you sent through some information and
trade me had told you that it was the most
viewed list thing of twenty twenty five so far eleven
four hundred and eight dollars. Did you have any any expectation,
any goal in mind when you when you put the
shoes on, trade me been or did you just sort
of put them on and thick to yourself, Let's see
(01:57:19):
how it goes.
Speaker 7 (01:57:21):
Do you know what?
Speaker 16 (01:57:22):
Sam? Sam and I were talking. He was like, oh,
you know, I'm just so lucky to have Craig and Sam.
And then he came up with this idea of letting
go of his shoes and putting them up. And I think, honestly,
for a fifteen year old, if it'd got to a
thousand dollars, that would have been mind boggling. And I
think those first couple of birds once got to trouble
for because it was it's just such a lot of
(01:57:44):
money and the fact that can go to Craig and
Sam and the group. You know, Craig Kirkwood has just
so many incredible athletes kind of camp. Just one of
New Zealand Secrety School's triathlon just two days ago, which
was unbelievable. We've just got an Finley Oliver in New
Zealand twenty triathlon champs Craig's athlete as well, and a
(01:58:06):
lot of these younger athletes don't get the full access
to physio, strength and conditioning programs. Things like that are
back in action. The Interville works with Craig and there's
younger athletes, but just being able to help them out
with those sorts of things, getting to events, all that
sort of. I mean, this is just incredible. What difference
this is going to make.
Speaker 2 (01:58:25):
Absolutely terrific. Look whoever, so, whoever Dragon is, that's obviously
a trade meet buyer name. I don't know. I mean
you've probably thought about this, But those shoes in years
to come, once we see how Sam's career plays out,
could be worth a heck of a lot more than
eleven and a half thousand, so a good investment by
that particular trade meet. But I know you're in Melbourne
(01:58:46):
at the moment, Ben, because Sam is running tonight in
a pretty stacked fifteen hundred meter field at the Moray
Plant Meat in Melbourne. It's sold out, first time a
track and field meet has sold out in Australia since
two thousand and one. Can you tell us about the
company that Sam and the other Sam Tanner are in tonight?
Speaker 16 (01:59:07):
Yeah, can I just you know, I was obviously involved
in track and field in two thousand and one. I
was running back then, and there was a Sydney Olympics,
and so twenty twenty one, when athletics meets were selling
out in Australia was probably peak athletic entertainment in Australia.
And the fact that now Australia has got a fully
sold out meat. We've got Gout, gout that Australian his
(01:59:28):
seventeen year old now running sensation that broke the Australian
Tour undred meter open men's record, and it's challenging about bolt.
He's the last race at what was it? It will
be ten forty New Zealand time at ten twenty eight
the New Zealand time. Sam and Sam Tanner are racing together.
And in that field you've got the Commas Games gold
(01:59:50):
midist Olihare. You've got Peter Bowle who came fourth on
the Olympic Games in the eight hundred meters. You've got
Cam Myers who set the world under twenty mile record
at three forty eight, which is just unbelievable. And you've
got nine there are nine guys that have run three
to thirty four for fifteen hundred or equivalent for the mile.
And that's to put that in perspective. Those nine people,
(02:00:12):
if all run a time, that's about fifty meters ahead
half the home straight ahead of what Sam's personal beast is,
which is the world record for a fifteen year old.
So he's the youngest in the entire meeting and he's
just going to be hanging on for dear life for
as long as he can. So it's just going to
be hold on and go and he's going to roll
the dice and.
Speaker 9 (02:00:30):
Give it a shot.
Speaker 2 (02:00:31):
What an experience for him though, Well, I mean you
talked last week about and so did Nick Willis when
we spoke to him about what might lie ahead for Sam,
and you talked about getting him into quality fields and
quality race as well. This is high quality stuff, isn't it.
Speaker 16 (02:00:48):
This is literally the like in terms of the event
being sold out, that's unbelievable. But in terms of the
actual field, I haven't seen a field like this in
Australasia in a decade. And so he's jumping up. You know,
he ran he's on under sixteen secondary schools in December
and now he's racing in the greatest field in a
decade in Australia. It's a hell of a learning it's
(02:01:09):
a hell of a learning curve. But what an awesome
event to be part of. And whatever whatever happens, the
learning and the knowledge you gain and the preparation and
just being learning to be comfortable in those environments, it
just it means that you can step up to the
next level later on.
Speaker 2 (02:01:23):
Absolutely brilliant. Well please push them all the best on
behalf of everybody here at ZB and all of our listenership. Ben,
thank you for changing the time of closing for the
auctions so they could join us live to give us
the final figure made eleven four hundred and eight dollars
for you know, we're just going to go to help
Craigan and Sam Tanner, that is, you know, help others,
and you've outlined that philosophy as well. So thanks for
(02:01:45):
joining us, mate. We look forward to catching up again
soon and all the best of Sam for tonight legend. Yes,
thanks so much, no, thank you mate, Ben Ruth there
in Melbourne where Sam's going to run that stacked fifteen
hundred meter field tonight. Incredible. Yeah, the Mori Plant Meet
ten thousand capacity completely sold out and as you had
been mentioned there, Yeah, the final event of the programmers
(02:02:06):
the two hundred meters featuring this sensational teenager we've got.
We've got Sam Ruth doing amazing things in the fifteen
hundred meters. Gout, gout this in credit. I think he's
only I think he's worn and O seven. So what
do he seventeen? Eighteen years old? Seventeen years old, He's
run twenty twenty seconds oh four for two hundred meters. Incredible,
(02:02:28):
He's in the in the final event tonight. Now I
wonder they've sold it out. Eight to three News Talks,
they'd be back in a.
