Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from News Talk sed b Berns.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
We'll ahead to their Rugby World Cup hon a high
after beating Australia thirty seven twelve in Wellington yesterday and Tea.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
Highs will put it at a touch and they'll say
that'll do. The Black Ferns dominance fifty seven twelve they
beat for Wallaroos.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
In Wellington, a twenty ninth straight win over Australia for
our New Zealand women's rugby team. They trailed though for
much of the first half, led just ten to seven
at halftime, before running away with the game in the
second half. Birthday girl Porsia Woodman Wickliffe scored a hat
trick of tries rue Ha DeMont, Sylvia Brunt, Ruby Towey
and Georgia Miller with an absolute stunner also dotting down
(00:51):
in the second half. Black Ferns attack coach Tony Christie
is with us, Tony, thanks for your time. You'd be
a fairly happy sort of an attack coach today, wouldn't you.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
Yeah. I think it was a bit of a game
of two hubs with our attack. We didn't quite get
our territory right next stuff and then also our breakdown.
But what I was really happy with was how the
girls responded at halftime to those two messages, and once
we tied it that up, then we could play out
our DNA.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
What was the substance of the halftime conversations with no
raised voices, just clear, concise instructions.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
Yeah, yep, this week was just really those key points,
nice and calm. So I was really impressed with the
girls with that. There was no panic in the room.
They knew what they needed to be done, and then
they went out and executed it.
Speaker 4 (01:37):
How do you assess then the second half performance?
Speaker 2 (01:39):
How pleased are you with the way they responded and
came from, as I say, just ten to seven ahead
at the break to really win in convincing fashion.
Speaker 4 (01:49):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:50):
Really with that, I think it just reinforced the key
aspects of our game that we need to get right.
Because we know we can attack, We've got in our
DNA the ability to play from side to side, our
offload game. But if we don't get that breakdown right
and we're not playing the right areas of then we put
ourselves under pressure.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
You mentioned DNA a couple of times there. What is
the Black Fern's DNA, all the aspects of it.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
Yeah, we're a fast team. We like to play free
and also for the calord is a real point of
difference for us. So yeah, those key things.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Hat trick for Porsche Woodman Whickcliffe on her birthday. How
integral is she to your side?
Speaker 3 (02:30):
Yeah, she can finish cancers indeed much space. Yeah, really
important both on the field and off the field. Obviously
she's been there, done it all. So the confidence she
gives something that the younger members and our team's huge
as well.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
And seven star Georgia Miller doesn't seem to have had
too many issues transitioning into the fifteen A side game.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
How impressed have you been with her?
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Yeah? Absolute freak. I'd love to say as the attack
coach who try was exactly character it up. But yeah,
that's just all her. Oh I'll tell her in person.
I'll take the credit for it. She's magnificent. And yeah,
I think she's only just getting started, which is an
exciting thing.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
That's exactly it. I was just going to say, she's
only really at the beginning. So how do you make
sure you harness her incredible ability in the most effective fashion.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
Yeah, well, I don't think it's about harnessing it. I
think it's about providing her as many opportunities to be
in the game as possible. So yeah, that's something we'll
look into to the World Cup, but also balancing that
with not overcooking her and making sure she still performs
her core role as a seven.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
How prepared do you feel for the World Cup?
Speaker 3 (03:41):
Yeah? I believe we've got everything in our squad. Our
game's really growing, particularly our territory game, so yeah, and
our defense yesterday I thought was outstanding. Our ability to
bring line speed and put the opposition under pressure. So yeah,
all the ingredients there, We've just got to put it
together on the day.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
Would you like to have had another couple of games
before the World Cup?
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (04:03):
I had an ideal world, Yes, but we've also got
huge internal competition in our group, so you're playing against
thirty two quality players each week and our internal stuff.
So we've got some simulations that will hopefully provide that
game like experience heading into World Cup.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
You announce your World Cup squad on Friday week. Have
you settled on it yet?
Speaker 3 (04:27):
Very very close? But holy a tough one. You look
at some of the quality matchups in our group. We
said right from the start that will need forty plus
to go and win this World Cup. And you would
have seen over the last few weeks the small little
injuries and niggles we've had and the quality of players
that have come in. So yeah, it's going to be
a tough one.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
When it comes down to a tough choice. And I'm
sure there'll be three or four tough choices to be made,
or maybe even more. But when it comes down to
what does swing it in one player's favor over another.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
Oh, there's certainly ranger things so dependent on that position
and also what's around them. So some position that might
come down to experience, some positions that might come down
to work great, we're looking for that, so some of
our key factors and those positions. But yeah, it's a
great debate around the table.
Speaker 4 (05:20):
I bet it.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
I bet it has and some challenging conversations, no doubt
as well. And just to finish Tony the World Cup
obviously World Cup holders and we remember the scenes of
twenty twenty two, how confident do you feel that you
can defend up in the Northern Hemisphere.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
Yeah, we've got a really nice internal confidence in our group.
We're really clear on our game and we know the
key factors to ensure we can go out and put
a performance. So yeah, no excuses. We've got the players.
Now we just go and do it.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
Well done yesterday, mate, all the best for the next
few weeks and on towards the World Cup.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Thanks thanks Tony, Tony Christy Black Ferns attack coach. Yeah,
so the team is named or the squad for the
World Cup is named on Friday week and then off
they'll go, the Black Ferns to the World Cup. Their
pool games are against Spain, Japan and Ireland, and then
presuming they negotiate those okay, which you'd have to assume
(06:14):
that they would into the knockout rounds, they'll go.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
Latest odds.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
Incidentally, for the Women's Rugby World Cup, England are clear
favorites and that's absolutely no surprise. They're a dollar fifty
at our tab. New Zealand second three dollars fifty, then Canada, France, Ireland, Australia,
Scotland and Italy. So look, we may well be on
course for a repeat of the last Women's Rugby World
(06:39):
Cup final with England up against New Zealand. It is
going to take a mighty effort to beat England, who
have been I don't know that they've been beaten since
that World Cup. If they have, it hasn't been very
often on home soil. Going to be a heck of
a task for our women, but well they go in
with a bit of confidence.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
Georgia Miller.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
I've seen a lot of social media around her as well,
coming across from sevens. We know how effective she was
as a sevens player. This trish scored yesterday, It just,
you know, I can't really describe it. Just have a
look at it, Georgia Miller. Just google it. Her name
is spelt j O r Ja. By the way, if
you want to check out this tribe by one of
(07:20):
the rising stars of New Zealand rugby.
