Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport Podcast with Jason Vine
from News Talk ZEDB.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Around this time every Sunday, we get the chance to
chat to James mcconey.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
Hello mate, good a poney. How are you. I hope
you've had a good weekend.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
I've had a great weekend. Actually, I'm looking forward to
next weekend very much. With the Super Rugby semi finals, Blues, Brumbies, Hurricanes, Chiefs.
It feels like the top four are there. How are
you feeling about next weekend?
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Not confident at all. The Hurricanes still look like the
best team. But it's one of those things where I
think so. I think the Hurricanes are the favorites, doing
the whole thing, but it could be decided by something
like discipline and refereeing interpretations because a lot of those
games I've watched, the close games, it's just been a
(00:57):
couple of calls they've gone me either way could have
been a completely different story. And even last night Jacob
ratchamtavut Akins was taken out in the air, knocked the
ball on, hangs guard and said play on. The Brummies
kicked the ball wide and Andy Knullerhead controls the ball
legs are darn those are ahead scores a try massive
(01:18):
turning point.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Are you doing that thing? Just back to when you
said the Hurricanes are favorites. Are you doing that kind
of reverse psychology thing? Is that what you're you're doing here?
Speaker 3 (01:29):
Yeah, I'm going to be putting a lot of money
on the Hurricanes. It's the only way I'll get any
pleasure out of that game. I'm in a world of pain, poney,
because the Chiefs did look good on Friday night.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
They did, No, they did, they did.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Yeah, the first time we've picked the team a full
strength team in a long while. In fact, we're trying
to work out who is a full strength and I
think Jacobson at seven makes sense. He's a nullifier. He's
a thwar so he's a defender. That's his strength. And
then of course Summer Penny Female comes out. He's an assassin,
a sniper if you like, and so Wallace A. Titi's
(02:04):
been the big success story. But when I look at
the Hurricanes and I just go, well, you know what,
perhaps do see Caifi on the on any given day
would be their best player, and he's starting on the bench.
So there's no way can say I think that the
Hurricanes aren't the favorites. I've just got too many weapons
and even their benches class.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Yeah, well I think it'll be a great game. In fact,
both will be. So yeah, let's put that off to
one side until we can actually talk about it in
specific fashion next weekend. But have you been watching a
bit of grassroots rug being Hamilton?
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Yeah, I have. I've been down there. I watched some
Paul's second fifteen place and Peter second fifteen. Great game,
beautiful weather, twenty degrees I think down in Mulu Land
yesterday there was some Paul's got up in that game,
and then I went over to Pudongia, went towards the mountain,
the Magic Mountain of Podogia, and watched the Parongia Colts
(03:02):
play Hamilton Old Boys Cults again beautiful weather. Of course,
it was just an absolute scorcher. But that game was epic,
a cliffhanger one of the final seconds that tried to
Perongia to win it. The lead changed hands about four
or five times in the last quarter. It was crazy.
So yeah, grassroots for the I reckon they were probably
(03:27):
maybe fifteen hundred people there. I'll not understanding, understanding really good. Yeah,
and this is and that was even before the seniors
had come on, so this was like on one ground
there was the Hinuetta, the Men of Stone who come
in and it's a big rivalry between those lower level clubs.
So yeah, this is club footy is still alive and
(03:49):
well and you need I need to take my mate
Mark Robinson down to see this. It's it's just incredible
to see.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
It's brilliant stuff. Hey, the Warriors were good last night,
went thy did you get did you catch the Warriors?
Speaker 3 (04:01):
Oh? Did I catch the Warriors? I mean, look, the
bandwagon has been into the shop, it's got a new
whaft and it's back on track, poney, Because that is
it's fully f it's ready. Ever I get on board
because the Wars suffocated the Cowboys and we needed to
see one of those games where the Warriors bossed the
(04:23):
entire game. Shout out to Adam Pompey for kicking six
from seven off the tee. I mean that was just
incredible as well. But and Dlan wytenis alesick for something
outrageous skill. Did you see that, Pony?
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Oh incredible just I mean yeah, yeah, I think we
get used to Dylan lads, I said earlier in the hour.
We get used to him doing outrageous things in a
try scoring your scenario, but the way he just battered
that back, you know, I just just tremendous stuff to watch.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
Yeah, that is the assist of the season. Go on YouTube,
will have the highlights. Sky Sport. Now, I'll have the highlights.
But it doesn't we can't do it justice. The ball
was basically out and dead in goal, and he jumps
towards the CA camera as well. I might add a
big camera and manages to miss that, but back the
ball back for a try. But the Harves need to
(05:14):
be talked about. Piney. We started the season with the
Johnson Metcalf combo, who we thought was really elite, and
now I'm looking at Chanel, Harris Tavita and the Mighty
Martin and thinking, I really like this combo. You've got,
you know, Chanelle number six, who is hat you know,
so you've got that the brutality that he brings, but
(05:35):
also savvy. And then to Mighty Martin, he just likes
to try things. He's a you know, he's a risk taker,
but he's got some silky skills and when given the keys,
can do something like that which has dominate a top team.
So I don't know what you thought, but I thought
that combo is excellent the past few games.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
I thought exactly the same and I think it makes
It makes for a really interesting discussion when Seawan Johnson
is foot again, and I guess it's not up to
us to make that decision, but it's a nice one
for Andrew Webs that have to.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Make true true. Piney. Sorry to interrupt, but I say,
before we move on, what about that ref. I don't
often say this on Sundays, but I'm in love. I
guarantee the Warriors will never see him again. He gave
us so many calls and the NRL are probably going
to put him in witness protection in the Northern Territory. Ziggy,
(06:24):
Saska and Damski, thank you. I love you. I'm going
to miss you. We will never see you ref and
Warrior's game again. But what you did last night was incredible.
Just being fair for once.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
One of the all time great names of officialdom as well.
To be fair, Hi, just on the French Open arm
and tennis. If we can change tech to the tennis,
is there a changing of the guard happening Novak Djokovic
is obviously he pulled out a bit earlier in this tournament,
didn't he? But are we seeing a changing of the
guard now eventually?
Speaker 3 (06:57):
I think so. It's kind of weird how Novak Djokovic
has had a knee operation around the same time as
I think better I had a big operation with Nadal.
He's thirty seven. So if you think of Carlos al
Karez's in the final against Alexandersberv, al Karez is twenty one.
So when Novo Djokovic played its first professional game in
(07:20):
January two thousand and three, Alcarez hadn't been born. So
this is how big an age gap we're talking. You know,
it's the kind of age gap where people say, oh, no,
that's a bit weird, but this thing is a couple.
But this is the one where I reckon that it
is the changing of the guard, and you can see
(07:41):
it now. Al Karez, he's the youngest player to have
reached a Grand Slam final on three different surfaces. I
think he'll win overnight. It's just whether he's had a
few speed wobbles coming into the tournament, but he has
beaten Sits, a pass and singer on his way to
(08:04):
the final. So yeah, watch this space. Could he actually
just become a goat? Are we witnessing someone who'll get
a full you know, fifteen years perhaps of clear ea
with I know some good rivals, but he just looks
that good.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
And there's probably someone about to be born who you know,
in fifteen or twenty years from now. If you and
I are still doing this segment on a Sunday, we
can say and x y Z wasn't even born when
Carlos Alcarez won his first major.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
That's right. That's how crazy this game of tennis is.
So I mean, it's it's actually he's an incredible player,
al Karez, but since he won Wimbledon last year, Remember
he's won Wimbledon, which is pretty good for a Spandard.
You know what they're like, they love the clay. So
since he's won Wimbledon, he's only won one other tournament,
so you can tell he's got that. That's sort of
(08:53):
one of the great mentalities, which is I've got to
get up for the French Open, and that's what he's done.
Let's see if he can lock it away and that'll
be his third I think Grand Slam one, maybe fourth?
Speaker 2 (09:05):
Actually, yeah that sounds right, that sounds right. Hey, just
before you go this time next week, the Euros will
have started the means European Football Championship would have done.
Did you see England lost to Iceland yesterday?
Speaker 3 (09:19):
Yeah, I know Iceland three hundred thousand people are pretty
good football. So look they are experimenting. They've done some
South Gates dropped, Jack Grealish and some really talented players.
I will be our cresis third Grand Slam, that's right.
So but with it should be France or Spain. Spain
(09:40):
needs to work out out of score goals and not
just hold the ball right. So that's the way I
feel that France obviously with him Barpe and you know,
following on from losing that World Cup final, they'll get
the job done. But all eyes for me, I always
look at England and I'm excited about a player who
plays for Crystal Palace of all places, and so you'll
(10:02):
have to remember the name. His name is ever RICHI
is a Ebbie is his name, and he is a
number ten playmaking midfielder, attacker. Look, Caine, Foden, Sucker and
Bellingham will be the main men for England. But I
think it's quite cool that a player from an unfashionable club,
(10:24):
let's say, can maybe come in there and make a
name for himself.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
Absolutely, and I'm looking forward to watching Scotland play, particularly
in the opening game against Germany next Saturday morning at
seven some breakfast time football involving the Scotts. I love it.
Speaker 3 (10:39):
The Scott's are in the group of death, the group
of McBeth A bit of a worry for them, poney,
But yes, I'm looking forward to Scotland as well, and
of course tuning early because they sing, Yes, sir, I
can boggie or boogie as they see in Scotland. And
that's always We're seeing that, all these hardened scott singing
(11:00):
a disco classic from the seventies. You should play that
song actually, maybe in the next break and.
Speaker 2 (11:06):
Find it, and I will certainly endeavor to do so.
